Book Description

THE WORLD OF KONG

A Natural History of Skull Island

It was an uncharted island somewhere off the coast of Sumatra, it was a land whispered about by merchants and sailors. It was a place so unbelievable that no one dared believe in its existence. Except one man, the extraordinary showman Carl Denham. Many will, of course, remember his show on Broadway and its tragic ending. But New York is not where the story ended, it is where it began.

In 1935 a joint expedition of several prominent universities and organizations called Project Legacy was launched. Its stated mission goal was to create the first of several field guides to Skull Island, a land filled with creatures existing outside of their time, where dinosaurs roamed, evolved, and still lived. Only a year later it was discovered that the island was doomed; the geological forces that had formed the island were now tearing it apart. There were only seven more abbreviated expeditions to the island before its destruction and the start of World War II.

The journals, sketches, and detailed notes of the scientists who braved Skull Island would have continued to gather dust on shelves across the planet were it not for the work of the authors of this book. Here for the first time is their work, collected in a comprehensive edition of the natural history of this lost island. Here is The World of Kong.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2006-10-09

No, I haven't seen the latest King Kong movie.(not yet anyway) I did however pick up The World of Kong at my local library and loved it! The book is a field guide to Skull Island featuring over 200 pages of fantastic creatures and beautiful artwork. I have to have a copy! Even then I will be begging my 11 year old just to have chance to look at it!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastically Detailed Study of the World of Kong.......2006-08-09

This book is no mere list of the creatures seen in King Kong; this is a fantastic and realistic continuation of the story and fleshing out of the "characters" of Skull Island.
Peter Jackson says in his foreword that, "in the end, what you see in the film represents only a tiny portion of Skull Island's possiblility," and the book works hard to prove that. With over 200 pages of 'research' and facts about the lifestyles and characteristics and evolutionary chains of dozens of animals, this book is no mere tie in to the movie; it is a work of fiction all on its own merit. Many, if not most, of the animals in this book were not featured in the film, and for every single one detailed information is given about the lifestyles and characteristics of the creature. Inside this book, you will find a veritable encyclopedia of knowledge about the world of Kong, information that the movie barely even scratched the surface of. You of course get the obligatory pages about the Vastatosaurus Rex, Venatosaurus Saevidicus, and Kong himself, but you also get info on Aspiscimex Exos, Piranhodon Titanus, Sterculithos Arachne, Chalyceratops Seradorsus, and many, many others that were not in the film.
Also, the art is a wondrous thing to behold as well; the crisp, clean paintings also have a certain edginess to them that is needed for any book about Skull Island. The book is certainly not short of fantastic creatures, and the pictures never fail to inspire.
In short, I urge to buy this book if you were a fan of the movie, but longed to see more of Skull Island. With this book, you will not only learn the origins of Skull Island itself, but also the origins of many of the creatures, and ultimately, the fate of the island itself. So I highly recommend this book, just based on its fascinating merit as a 'research' book, and also because of its fantastically rendered art.

5 out of 5 stars awesome book.......2006-06-12

If youve like "after man" by dougal dixon this book is up there with extreme and bizarre ecology. Awesome art and nice species profiles, the only piece i found lacking was the section on herbivorous chameleons, the description was very short and art was extremely lacking. I own quite a few chameleons species myself and the ones i own are more interesting and amazing looking than what was put in the book it would have been better if they didnt include that at all. otherwise a spectacular book id recommend it to anyone with any interest in animals.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for those who love the artistry and detail of the movie.......2006-03-15

Let me start my review by saying that you shouldn't buy this book if you didn't like the movie, which should be a given. This book is not a behind-the-scenes look at King Kong, nor is it a book on the process of bringing the World of Kong to life, it's more of a fantasy-encyclopeedia for those who loved the movie and would like to explore the world of Kong further. The book does present some impressive artwork, and its a pity that more of the creatures displayed couldn't be in the movie. This book is a must have for fans of Kong.

5 out of 5 stars A lot of information.......2006-03-23

Did you like the movie? (I loved it!) If yes then you will want this book ... it is all you want to know (and more) about King Kong 2005. A good read.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Book!.......2006-03-11

Very simple...a fantastic book from a fantastic film. Well written and concise. The photography is perfect and fills you in on the myriad of details that went into this stunning film. The parts on how Wellington, New Zealand became New York are worth the price alone. The detail is overwhelming. As someone who lives in New York I was amazed that Peter Jackson and crew captured the rows of piers that once jutted out into the Hudson, towards Hoboken, New Jersey. This didn't have to be put in...yet is a small example of the attention, pure attention to detail that went into the making of this film. This will not destroy the mystery behind the making of this epic...it will enhance it.

5 out of 5 stars excelent book!!!.......2006-03-03

Having always been a fan of '76 version of King Kong and never having seen the original version, at first when I knew that Peter Jackson was making his updated version, I became excited because it was one of those iconic mosters from my childhood, and also because Peter Jackson's previous works with The Lord of the Rings, which was quite amazing.

This is one very detailed hell of a book!!! Really good technical stuff as well as concept work, I just wish there would have included more Kong pics, either concept art as well as any photo from the movie. But anyway, this stuff is great!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Insight into the World of Kong - A Must Have!.......2006-02-11

Having watched Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong three times already, I wondered so often during the film how they made it all look so real. I never doubted for a second that there was an uncharted island of the coast; it was all so real and vibrant I couldn't help believing. I wanted to know exactly how they created not only Skull Island and it's creatures, but the whole city of New York, the actor's takes on the movie, and Peter Jackson's vision. Having said so, I believe this is the best possible guide for the movie you could have.

Each page is a veritable explosion of color and detail as they take you through step-by-step, explaining the creations of miniatures and models, motion-capture of Andy Serkis, and blue and green screens suddenly turning into lush tropical jungles, or cold, dirty, city streets. They give histories into the Skull Island natives, personal actor narritations of their characters, and detailed explanations of the process of creating an image in the computer and bringing it to life on the big screen. This is one of those books with something for everyone, and you can skip around to whatever interests you most. Myself, I read the entire book and often went back to certain sections to just immerse myself in the creative genius of the people who made this production a reality. It also made me a bit amazed at times, when I learned that the famous log scene was conducted on a bucking constructed log in the middle of a sea of blue screens only 2 meters from the floor. Or that New York wasn't really New York at all. Or even that the biplanes were all reconstructed by hand from old blueprints, because there were no surviving ones. It also talked about teh detail put into the shop windows, where everything was bought or made by hand. After reading this, I had such a deep feeling of respect and amazment for the people who worked on this production, making it as realistic as possible. I know that sounds weird, because King Kong is a fantasy story, but with such heart and detail and life, it's hard to think of it as anything but real. In all, this is the perfect book for anyone who wants more insight into the world of Kong, or even wants to be entertained and amazed time and time again.

5 out of 5 stars Making of King Kong a valuable guide.......2006-01-30

This book is one of the best "Making of" volumes I have read - informative, interesting, intelligent, and with plenty of 'insider' views of the film making process. Refreshingly, the focus is less on the "let's chat with the movie stars" aspect, and far more on the complex process of pulling this huge movie together. A real salute to Peter Jackson and his team!

Book Description

This book chronicles an ethnographic team's involvement over a span of fifteen years with the people of a poor, largely Puerto Rican neighborhood in New York City. Jagna Sharff focuses on a group of families who live within a radius of a few blocks of her storefront office, especially the children who come first to interact with the team. She contrasts her team's initial observations of how people grapple with daily life with the residents' expressed hopes and dreams in a community lacking jobs but rife with underground activities. Through lively and interconnected stories, she traces over time the fate of the neighborhood and the outcomes for individual children and adults during an era when the local and national policy of the war on poverty was transmuted into a war against the poor. The book's lyrical, cinematically vivid style makes it appealing both for college social science courses and for the general public.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Tedious and Pointless.......2006-04-13

As an ethnographic anthropological researcher, Sharff should know better than others how to properly conduct an ethnography and offer valuable research to her audience. In documenting the tragedy and drama of the poverty-stricken individuals she is studying, Sharff believes that simply regurgitating their lives moment-by-moment qualifies as significant. At the very least a reader should be able to identify the problem she is reseaching, the goals of her research, and why it might be significant.

Instead, the book reads as though Sharff simply regurgitated her field notes onto the page without reflection or analysis. The reader is left unable to engage in a broader dialogue about anything of significance. No conclusion are drawn, or themes explored. The reader is expected to be interested in a dull and consistent recounting of serious human tragedies absent of being placed in a larger context. The result is a mish-mash of lives thrown together, and reading about Sharff's personal reactions to each. Yet, because Sharff focuses only on mere details of daily lives and does not discuss larger issues, it is not clear why her study is important or what it has accomplished.

No conclusions are made by Sharff; the book simply ends by wrapping up the current state of various individuals. I am left feeling as though the individuals in this ethnography were the victims of a terrible hoax - the only voice that comes through loud and clear is Sharff's own. The individuals themselves are left mute, unable to rely on their researcher to analyze and contextualize their tragedies to influence further research in any significant way.

The book adds nothing of immediate value to the current literature on ethnography. If indeed one is interested in this topic, and in reading an excellent ethnography that offers convincing arguments and challenges existing theories about poverty, oppression, and race, read "In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio" by Philippe Bourgois. Unfortunately for Sharff, it is everything this book is not.

5 out of 5 stars A Moving Analysis of the Forces Shaping a Poor Neighborhood.......2000-06-15

Jagna Sharff is an anthropologist who spent several years in the early 70s living in a poor Puerto Rican neighborhood in the Lower East Side before arson and gentrification forced the poor out. In vivid, cinematic style, Sharff analyzes the different forces at work in the decline of the families in the neighborhood: the loss of manufacturing in the region throws men out of work; rules governing payments in Aid to Dependent Families break up marriages; cheap drugs flood the streets, providing a source of employment for young men as well as violence and drug addiction. Sharff gives detailed and touching portraits of family and neighborhood intereconnectedness and survival skills, while at the same time describing the part maternal dependence on drug money to survive plays in their sons' need to work on the street. Sharff has a gift for describing the joys as well as the constant anxiety about hunger or illness these families face: finally a father finds work in a dry cleaning store; soon after, his son falls several stories in an elevator shaft in their public housing unit, leaving the family (now off Medicaid) with a $10,000 medical debt that will crush the family's meager income for decades to come. Sharff ends the book with two intimate portraits of a brother and sister: the first, who witnessed a murder at the age of 11, spends years in solitary confinement in state prison "for his own protection" from other inmates; the second becomes a police officer in a neighborhood much like the one in which she grew up. Sharff is not dispassionate: a childhood survivor of war-time Poland who at 8 watched bombs dropping on the labor camp in which she and her 5-year-old brother were interred, she sees the children of this neighborhood as suffering from the traumatic stress of those who live in wartime: instead of bombs comes the smell of gasoline and the arsonist's torch, the whine of bullets between dealers, the sight of a bloody rug in which higher level dealers have rolled up the corpse of a young dealer they have murdered, to "send a message." Sharff draws an indelible portrait of this terrible, wonderful neighborhood, and especially of its children, and makes a convincing case for bureaucracies more in touch with the realities of the poor.

Book Description

Explorer, war hero, filmmaker, and cinema pioneer Merian C. Cooper–the adventurer who created King Kong–was truly larger than life. “Pictures cannot be made from an executive’s desk,” “Coop” declared, and he did more than talk the talk–he walked the walk to the far corners of the globe, with a motion picture camera in tow, in an era when those corners were truly unknown, untamed, and unforgiving.

Cooper’s place in history is assured, thanks not only to the monstrous gorilla from Skull Island but because the story of Kong’s creator is even bigger and bolder than the beast he made into a cultural icon. Spellbound since boyhood by tales of life-threatening adventure and exotic locales, Cooper plunged again and again into harrowing expeditions that took him to places not yet civilized by modern man.

Cooper was one of the first bomber pilots in World War I. After the war, he helped form the famous Kosciuszko Squadron in battle-torn Poland. He then turned his attention to producing documentary films that chronicled his hair-raising encounters with savage warriors, man-eating tigers, nomadic tribes, and elephant stampedes.

In addition to producing King Kong, he was the first to team Fred Astaire with Ginger Rogers, arranged Katharine Hepburn’s screen test, collaborated with John Ford on Hollywood’s greatest Westerns, and then changed the face of film forever with Cinerama, the original “virtual reality.” He returned to military service during World War II, serving with General Claire Chennault in China, flying missions into the heart of enemy territory.

This book is a stunning tribute to a two-fisted visionary who packed a multitude of lifetimes into eighty remarkable years. The first comprehensive biography of this unique man and his amazing time, it’s the tale of someone whose greatest desire was always to be living dangerously.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Passing through history.......2006-02-17

Mark Vaz has not only captured the life of Merian C. Cooper, but in doing so has also captured pieces of World War I, the Hollywood motion picture industry from the late 1920's through the 1950's, the origins and growth of the commerical aviation industry, and World War II.

Along the way, we find Billy Mitchell, David O. Selznick, Juan Trippe, Claire Chennault, Jimmy Doolittle, Jock Whitney and a cast of thousands; we also find King Kong, Technicolor and Cinerama.

It's a book that is easy to read, and hard to put down.

4 out of 5 stars Chest-thumpingly essential.......2005-11-30

A scrupulously researched and heart-felt bio, if not always the best written. The author gets cuaght up up in his topic and overreaches his writing abilities.

Cooper was one of those amazing men whose life encompassed war, travel, explornography, mythopoeia, cinema, big business, and, at least to his own eye, international relations. The book does a wonderful job of seeking out all the details of these endeavors and tying them into a fine package. Deservedly best known for King Kong (1933 and only), Cooper was certainly a man of his century.

5 out of 5 stars A Breathtaking Life Captured.......2005-11-15

Cover blurbs reflect this reader's approach as well: picked up for the information on King Kong but relished for the other information on Cooper. This is a pretty good read (four stars) of a truly amazing life (five+ stars). If you are a history buff, you will be astounded how many events Cooper saw/participated in; Pancho Villa, First World War, Russian Civil War, Interwar Pacific, Second World War China (with Flying Tigers), etc. The photographs being scattered through the text rather than plates in the center of the book helps with grasping it all. Overall, this book a very nice read for a fan of the old King Kong films or someone who likes early 20th century history. (I bought myself a copy and my father a copy as we used to watched King Kong, Son of Kong, and Mighty Joe Young when it was broadcast every Thanksgiving on Secaucus, New Jersey's Channel 9.)

5 out of 5 stars "I'm King Kong".......2005-09-08

Mark Cotta Vaz's latest film book is his most important to date as it is the first biography of a true cinema pioneer, Merian C. Cooper. The life of the creator of KING KONG is richly detailed in a work that is hard to put down. The concluding chapters tie everything together nicely in a poignant way while at the same time explaining the lasting impact of Cooper's greatest film. There may be future bios that probe even deeper into this truly larger than life figure and his many achievements, but Mr. Vaz has laid the foundation and has done an admirable job-- one Cooper would be proud of.

    Book Description

In 1933, American showman Carl Denham returned from a mysterious, hidden island with a priceless treasure. A treasure not gold or jewels, but the island's barbaric god, a monstrous anthropoid called "Kong." The savage giant escaped and wreaked havoc among the man-made canyons of Manhattan, but within hours of the giant ape's death his body - and Carl Denham - disappeared. Twenty-five years later, the son of Carl Denham makes a shocking discovery that leads him back to the site of his father's greatest adventure and to the answers that will unlock the century's greatest mystery and history's greatest miracle. Authorized by the Cooper Estate and based on the original novel that inspired the all-time classic film. This new novel acts as both prequel and sequel to the classic fantasy tale, King Kong. Acclaimed fantasy artist Joe DeVito and top fantasy and science-fiction writer Brad Strickland join forces to make for an interactive visual-narrative storytelling experience unlike any other.

5 out of 5 stars Answers Questions Everybody Had!!.......2007-05-13

Thought the book was an excellent follow-up to the original movie, and answered questions such as what happened to Denham? What happened to the skeleton after the Empire State fall? Are there any more like him? Very quick read, enjoyed it completely. Fans of the original movie will like this very much

5 out of 5 stars KONG IS KING.......2006-03-15

It answers a lot of questions about how everything is the way it is. Like: Why are the doors in the wall the size of Kong? Where did Kong come from? Who build the wall. What will happen to the island? It also gives a nice account after the fall of Kong.

    5 out of 5 stars Nicely done,,,.......2006-01-19

Reading "Kong: King of Skull Island" was a real treat! I found the book to be well written and beautifully illustrated. This book makes Skull Island come alive with very realistic settings and credible native peoples. We learn how the wall that isolates the native population from the islands creatures came to be. And of course we learn of Kong. What his early life and death struggles were like. How he came to be the last of his kind and why he chose skull mountain as his stronghold.

I felt the writing perfectly captured Kong's nature showing us a complex creature of almost human longings yet still a very frightening beast. Hats off to Joe DeVito and Brad Strickland for crafting an engaging and thoroughly enjoyable book.

    5 out of 5 stars YIPEE.......2005-12-28

Fianally a book that does justice to the long running King Kong. People complain that it does not connect with the movie "Son of kong". Well guess what, that movie sucks. That's why they made a new book to make a new, bettter ending to King Kong's saga. The artwork is stunning, and Skull Island's origins are also revealed, which I liked. If you loved the old, classic King Kong, BUY THIS BOOK!

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-12-26

Kong returns once again through the artwork of Joe De Vito. His genius in creating this book shows on every page. Through "Storyteller" the secrets of King Kong and Skull Island are revealed. Is it fantasy or did Kong really live? The secrets are revealed in this spectacular book!
