Book Description

As he is driving home from a minister's conference, Baptist minister Don Piper collides with a semi-truck that crosses into his lane. He is pronounced dead at the scene. For the next 90 minutes, Piper experiences heaven where he is greeted by those who had influenced him spiritually. He hears beautiful music and feels true peace. Back on earth, a passing minister who had also been at the conference is led to pray for Don even though he knows the man is dead. Piper miraculously comes back to life and the bliss of heaven is replaced by a long and painful recovery. For years Piper kept his heavenly experience to himself. Finally, however, friends and family convinced him to share his remarkable story.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book, Title Misleading.......2007-10-09

First I want to qualify this review by saying that this was a good book, a book that I enjoyed and learned from, however it wasnt really what the title made it seem that it was, a book on heaven. Sure Mr. Piper explains his experiance in heaven, well at least at the gates of heaven, in the first chapter and it does paint a picture of heaven that I cant wait to experiance, but there are maybe 2 chapters on heaven in this 17 chapter book. The rest of the story is about how Don Piper came back to life from a terrible auto accident and how he was able to find passion again and regain a sense of Gods Purpose in his life, which is a great read, not just what the Title premises.
That being said. I did enjoy the book and the story, it is uplifting and enspiring for anyone who has gone through illness or any tragedy in their life for that matter and I would recommend it to anyone needing new perspective. I just would have titled it "Back from the Dead" or Glimpses of Heaven: One Mans Journey to Heaven, Back Through Hell and on to Purpose" or something of that like.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment!.......2007-10-05

Truly a disappointment. I should have known better than to purchase this book. How can an entire book be written about a 90 minute experience? However, I did not expect a blow by blow of medical treatments and his healing process.

3 out of 5 stars 90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN.......2007-10-05

I found it believable and an amazing description of his experience of seeing heaven's gates, etc., but after that, the long drug-out story of the author's recovery was somewhat tedious.

1 out of 5 stars Book title is misleading.......2007-10-03

After the 90 second replay of Heaven, the rest of the book was just reading about his stay in the hospital and his slow recovery. I was disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly Inspiration.......2007-09-26

This book isn't for everyone. It's a heartfelt tale with many great lessons. Don's experiences demonstrate the most valuable lessons in life:
- trust that God has a purpose for each of us;
- often the best way to help others is to let them help you;
- everything leads to good if we let it;
- often the smallest gestures can have the most impact;
- even the worst experiences have silver linings;
- heaven is real and waiting for us.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful healing tool for dog lovers who have lost their pet........2007-10-06

This book offers peace as well as humor to those attempting to deal with the loss of their beloved dog. The illustrations are priceless, and the dialogue reminds us that dogs do, after all, go to heaven. I have bought numerous copies for friends in need, and they have all been so grateful!

4 out of 5 stars Dogs enjoy Heaven.......2007-09-24

When my two young friends, boys aged 6 and 10 lost their lifetime friend, Charlie-the beagle, to illnes, I purchased several books to help them formulate their own feelings and perhaps talk about their loss.
This book stimulated the most conversation. The idea of 'Charlie' going to a special, dog-friendly, place in Heaven brought a few smiles as they read. This was a good 'read together' book for those under 7 years of age.

4 out of 5 stars To help a bereaved dog owner.......2007-08-09

I first saw this book mentioned in the AKC magazine as an appropriate title for a bereaved dog owner. I am sure that, for an owner who had lossed a loved canine, this book would be a simple affirmation of the dog's importance. The book would also call up memories of precious times.

3 out of 5 stars Dog Heaven.......2007-07-16

It was sweet, but I had expected and hoped for more. We just lost a dog after over 11 1/2 years and were looking for a book to really help the children cope. It was just alright.

5 out of 5 stars This book should be in every vet's waiting room.......2007-06-25

Found this book in the veterinary ER waiting room the night we took in our 16 year old dog, and had to put her down. My 8 year old son couldn't stay in the exam room while they did the procedure, but found this book and read it out loud to me while it was happening, and then went into the room afterwards and read it to his dad and 2 sisters. I was so impressed I bought us a copy for my pastor-husband's office, and then 2 more copies for family members who responded to my email about losing our dog and my son reading this book to the family. I cannot say how much this helped our family.

The Great Divorce is C.S. Lewis's Divine Comedy: the narrator bears strong resemblance to Lewis (by way of Dante); his Virgil is the fantasy writer George MacDonald; and upon boarding a bus in a nondescript neighborhood, the narrator is taken to Heaven and Hell. The book's primary message is presented with almost oblique tidiness--"There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, in the end, 'Thy will be done.'" However, the narrator's descriptions of sin and temptation will hit quite close to home for many readers. Lewis has a genius for describing the intricacies of vanity and self-deception, and this book is tremendously persistent in forcing its reader to consider the ultimate consequences of everyday pettiness. --Michael Joseph Gross

Book Description

C. S. Lewis takes us on a profound journey through both heaven and hell in this engaging allegorical tale. Using his extraordinary descriptive powers, Lewis introduces us to supernatural beings who will change the way we think about good and evil.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Great Divorce.......2007-09-30

This is one of my favorite books. I've read it several times and I've had to buy new copies because I keep giving it away. The Great Divorce starts off a little slowly, but you have to hang in there through the first couple of chapters. It is NOT a book about marital divorce, but rather about letting go of the things you think you want or need in order to gain that which is of much greater value.

4 out of 5 stars A dash of fantasy, a dash of truth, vintage C.S. Lewis.......2007-09-26

As one reviewer noted, many readers will not pick up a C.S. Lewis creation beyond "Chronicles of Narnia," "Mere Christianity," and "The Screwtape Letters." I was one of them, but I'm very thankful for having to check out a copy of Lewis' "The Great Divorce." Like his Narnia tales, there is a dash of both fantasy and truth in this volume, and the mix is delicate but profound. Built as a story of a bus ride to Heaven and Hell, "The Great Divorce" weaves a tapestry of assorted characters, facing immortal choices about their own harrowing predicaments. While Lewis' landscape visualizing the realities of Heaven and Hell are of course conjectural, each character's scene and dialogue with the Solid Spirits of Heaven are assuredly not. It's like looking in the mirror - there is someone who looks exactly like you, warts and all. It's a small book, something you can finish within a day. I still thought it was like a smack in the face, something we need in our materialistic and fickle lives now and again.

Pride, lust, idolatry, SIN, it's all represented here in the great style of Lewis' magical blend of imagination and vivid imagery. The book, of course, ends in hope, in salvation. As the mystical Teacher who advises the main character Lewis says, Hell would not be big enough to do any harm to the Real World, or the Truth.

4 out of 5 stars An Intriguing Story.......2007-09-19

C.S. Lewis' very short book is a fictional work that follows the journey of a group of people in Hell who take a trip to Heaven. Like his "Screwtape Letters," this book provides some excellent insights into the psychology of humankind.

During this trip to Heaven, the inhabitants of Hell are given a chance to repent and enter the kingdom of God. Each person upon arrival is eventually greeted by a person from Heaven who tries to convince the unrepentant to receive salvation. It is almost painful to read as these inhabitants of Hell steadfastly refuse to repent. It is painful to see the characters accept Hell and reject Heaven, but it is even more painful because it is easy for us to see our own flaws represented by these unrepentant people.

Lewis' construction of Hell as a place where the unrepentant wander around and never achieve satisfaction or fulfillment is conspicuously lacking searing flames and torturing demons. And although Lewis may not have meant for "The Great Divorce" to be a systematic description of the nature of Heaven and Hell, I think that he is certainly on to something. The vision of Hell found in this book is, I think, closer to the reality of Hell than the traditional Dante-esque version of torture and pain. But the primary accomplishment of "The Great Divorce" is that it shows us the psychology of unbelief, even when manifested in ourselves.

5 out of 5 stars Yet, it IS a plausible picture of the afterlife..........2007-09-08

This little book is a total joy to read. I know that the author makes it very clear that one should not suppose that he is factually presenting details of the afterlife, yet, in the end he has created a most satisfying image of a plausible afterlife. As for the title, he is referring to the poet-mystic William Blake's Marriage of Heaven and Hell. He points out that this is a synthesis that can never be, for to do so would compromise the absolute Goodness of Heaven, thereby making a Hell of both. Perhaps there can one day be a marriage of Heaven and Earth (thereby showing both to really have been Heaven all along), but never of Heaven and Hell.

I loved the imagery of Hell being very much like a never-ending city on Earth where it is always twilight and eternal night always on the verge. Yet, it is not a crowded city for people keep moving apart because they cannot stand each other's presence. That's just it. People dwell in Hell by their own choice. It is the obsessions that separate them from God and the highest reality that keep them from leaving. It is even shown that such higher impulses as love and pity, if unhealthily indulged in for their own sake and for nothing higher or transcendent, can keep you in Hell. Yet, this Hell is also Purgatory for those who workout their obsessions. In fact, there is a regular bus service to Heaven for fieldtrips that serve just that purpose (I always suspected that the omnibus originated in Hades.)

As for Heaven, it is perpetually just the moment before dawn and eternal day. The idea that Heaven is actually more substantial than Hell, or Earth, is reasonable, since it is after all the more Real of the two being closer to the Creator. Indeed, the visitors from Hell appear as pale and insubstantial deformed ghosts who find the adamantine hardness and density of the higher plane physically painful (even walking upon the grass.) The residents of the realm however are radiant spirits who do everything that they can to point out the mistakes and illusions that the ghostly visitors still cling to- and which are the only thing keeping them from traveling higher up and farther in to the one true goal. The most detailed and believable of these tutelary spirits is Lewis' own spriritual mentor, George Macdonald.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but don't try and take too much theology from it........2007-08-16

I gave this book three stars because while it is entertaining, there is a significant potential for people to try and get theology from it, which for the most part I don't recommend. The author makes sure to make that point at the end of the book, though. But I'm sure it's too late for a lot of people by then.

The primary theological point that C.S. Lewis is actually intending to make is that one goes to hell as a consequence of rejecting God and "loving" self. It is the person's rejection of God, not the other way around. However, in trying to make this point in a novel, a lot of the theology seems to get messed up.

Book Description

Seventeen years ago, Sepha Stephanos fled the Ethiopian Revolution after witnessing soldiers beat his father to the point of certain death, selling off his parents' jewelry to pay for passage to the United States. Now he finds himself running a grocery store in a poor African-American neighborhood in Washington, D.C. His only companions are two fellow African immigrants who share his feelings of frustration with and bitter nostalgia for their home continent. He realizes that his life has turned out completely different and far more isolated from the one he had imagined for himself years ago.

Soon Sepha's neighborhood begins to change. Hope comes in the form of new neighbors-Judith and Naomi, a white woman and her biracial daughter-who become his friends and remind him of what having a family is like for the first time in years. But when the neighborhood's newfound calm is disturbed by a series of racial incidents, Sepha may lose everything all over again.

Told in a haunting and powerful first-person narration that casts the streets of Washington, D.C., and Addis Ababa through Sepha's eyes, The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears is a deeply affecting and unforgettable debut novel about what it means to lose a family and a country-and what it takes to create a new home.

5 out of 5 stars new yorker.......2007-08-30

I read this book hoping to be moved and enlightened and to feel that I had been honored to have a new and wondeful experience. This was a good book, but, sadly I will have forgotten it shortly. I await the next by this wonderful writer who might someday be a saramago or a ha jin or a murakami....but not yet. Still worth 5 stars for the promise of the future.

5 out of 5 stars important book.......2007-07-20

This is a very touching novel, very well-written. I think it is an important book because so few Americans have any knowledge of the experience of African immigrants. Obviously this is only one small story, but it is an intelligent and poignant story that vividly captures meaningful aspects of the immigrant experience.

5 out of 5 stars Melancholy and gently humorous . . ........2007-06-20

The central character and narrator of this melancholy novel, Sepha, is a 30-something Ethiopian immigrant, living in Washington, DC, in a run-down neighborhood that is suddenly showing signs of gentrification. After 17 years in the States, he has long since reached the point of accepting his fate - an endless exile from the country of his birth and the mother and younger brother who survived the revolution that he himself escaped at the age of 19. A shopkeeper now, operating a little market, he lacks the drive that makes model immigrants of others and thus barely makes ends meet - less than barely.

Except for two friends, Ken and Joe, also African immigrants, he leads a lonely and listless life. By contrast, Ken an engineer from Kenya, strives steadily to adapt himself to the American pursuit of material success; Joe, a waiter in a high-class restaurant, is a closet epic poet, obsessed with the political debacle of his own country, Congo. The friendship of these three single men is poignant and often quietly amusing, and they pass the time with ironic reminders of how their lives in America have been like an escape from Dante's hell (the title is a reference to the closing lines of "The Inferno").

Enter a well-off white woman, an academic with a school-age daughter. When she buys and renovates a house in the neighborhood, she sparks a feint romantic interest in Sepha, as well as the resentment of the welfare-check neighbors being evicted as rents suddenly begin to soar. The resulting events make for a wistful account of people traumatized by brutal political upheavals, and washing up in the land of freedom and opportunity, where lives settle into a kind of permanent holding pattern. Beautifully written, with a quiet charm that finds rueful laughter in sadness and loss. Readers may also appreciate Hisham Matar's "In the Country of Men."

4 out of 5 stars Nice debut from Dinaw Mengestu.......2007-06-15

Dinaw Mengestu's debut novel paints a detailed, knowing picture of life amongst D.C.'s Ethiopian community. It's also a nice study of a 'neighborhood in transition' and its effects on new residents and old. I especially liked Megnestu's depiction of the interactions between the novel's protagonist Sepha Stephanos and his two African mates, Kenneth and Joseph. Megnestu shows a keen ear for dialogue.

5 out of 5 stars An Ethiopian immigrant's new life.......2007-05-30

Sepha Stephanos is stuck in time. He is in Ethiopia, huddled in the corner with his brother, watching his father being beaten by revolutionaries during the Red Terror. He flees to America, but his life in the "land of opportunity" is merely a dream --- not a nightmare or a hopeful reverie, but a mundane existence free of any ambition or disillusion, full only of fond memories of his father. "How was I supposed to live in America when I had never really left Ethiopia? I wasn't, I decided. I wasn't supposed to live here at all." Instead, he leads a solitary existence behind a convenience store counter and inside a dilapidated house in a run-down neighborhood of Washington, D.C.

Sepha has two friends, both representing different facets of immigration. Kenneth dons his suit and tie daily, having worked himself up from hotel employee to engineer. He "takes one for the team" by working Christmas Day, allowing his American co-workers to celebrate with their families. Joseph, on the other hand, is a waiter who drinks the alcohol left on tables straight from the glasses of unknown patrons. Joseph is a romantic, perfecting words of poetry and relating everything in life back to Africa. Like Sepha, Joseph is unable to come to terms with his American existence.

Sepha's desire for invisibility is challenged when a white woman moves in next door with her biracial daughter. Suddenly his store seems dirty and his home run down. He notices his balding head and nonexistent college education. To further complicate matters, his neighborhood is embarking on its own revolution --- a changing climate that threatens the ousting of all present tenants for the sake of revitalization. Will he awaken from his dream in time to maintain the life he has created for himself, or is it ultimately impossible to trade one country for another?

Debut novelist Dinaw Mengestu and his family left Ethiopia shortly after the Red Terror when he was just a boy. Recently he gave a reading in Seattle, Washington, to a room filled with Americans and Ethiopians alike. The Americans were no doubt drawn to the beauty of the story, the fluidity of the prose and the humanity of the protagonist. The Ethiopians were understandably thankful for this telling of their recent history and for a voice of a highly voiceless topic, in the land that they too are trying to embrace.

Mengestu's voice brought the character to even greater life as he read of Sepha's final experience with his father and the revolutionaries. The author stood behind the podium in a white shirt and sport coat, with blue jeans scarcely hiding his "Ethiopianesque" stick-like legs and his hair in dread locks that were haphazardly crowning his head. His voice was soft, slow enough to carry the weight of the story, and we in the room sat mesmerized. We all seemed to be asking ourselves the same question: Where does one go from here? When a writer has told the intimate story of his family and country, even when fictionalized, how can it be matched by any subsequent tale?

There is no doubt though that this author can pull it off, and I look forward to reading his next (as of yet undisclosed) body of work. Mengestu has both the humility and the grandeur of a successful writer, and we at the reading all seemed to feel as though we were in the presence of a highly talented friend.

In 1984, Ron and Dan Lafferty murdered the wife and infant daughter of their younger brother Allen. The crimes were noteworthy not merely for their brutality but for the brothers' claim that they were acting on direct orders from God. In Under the Banner of Heaven, Jon Krakauer tells the story of the killers and their crime but also explores the shadowy world of Mormon fundamentalism from which the two emerged. The Mormon Church was founded, in part, on the idea that true believers could speak directly with God. But while the mainstream church attempted to be more palatable to the general public by rejecting the controversial tenet of polygamy, fundamentalist splinter groups saw this as apostasy and took to the hills to live what they believed to be a righteous life. When their beliefs are challenged or their patriarchal, cult-like order defied, these still-active groups, according to Krakauer, are capable of fighting back with tremendous violence. While Krakauer's research into the history of the church is admirably extensive, the real power of the book comes from present-day information, notably jailhouse interviews with Dan Lafferty. Far from being the brooding maniac one might expect, Lafferty is chillingly coherent, still insisting that his motive was merely to obey God's command. Krakauer's accounts of the actual murders are graphic and disturbing, but such detail makes the brothers' claim of divine instruction all the more horrifying. In an age where Westerners have trouble comprehending what drives Islamic fundamentalists to kill, Jon Krakauer advises us to look within America's own borders. --John Moe

Book Description

Jon Krakauer’s literary reputation rests on insightful chronicles of lives conducted at the outer limits. He now shifts his focus from extremes of physical adventure to extremes of religious belief within our own borders, taking readers inside isolated American communities where some 40,000 Mormon Fundamentalists still practice polygamy. Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God.

At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a multi-layered, bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith. Along the way he uncovers a shadowy offshoot of America’s fastest growing religion, and raises provocative questions about the nature of religious belief.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book, I couldn't put it down!.......2007-10-06

A friend gave me this book and I finally got around to reading it a year or so later and was quickly consumed by it. It is an amazing book; it is thoroughly researched and factual yet will keep you entertained and yearning for more. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Scary, horrifying, True Crime being lived out every day!.......2007-10-03

I was sickened by what I learned in this book.
Interesting that these groups of FLDS take so much money from the government that they destest. That is tax money we pay in that is given to them to let them live that illegal and immoral lifestyle.
I have seen religious fundamentalism first hand and I think there is a note of mental illness attached to it in most every case.
Book was very informative. (Couldn't put it down.)

4 out of 5 stars Prepare to be shocked.......2007-10-02

If you are unfamiliar with fundamentalist Mormonism, this book will take you on a journey to places that you will doubt could even exist in 21st-century America. In the style of Jon Krakauer's other writings, the book is engaging, addicting, and disturbing. Of course, the book's outrageous subject matter certainly helps that along.

While the book centers on the true-crime story of the Lafferty murders, Krakauer indulges in some substantial subplots: a detailed history of the Mormon church in the 19th century, as well as an expose of fundamentalist Mormonism. Although Krakauer jumps among these three threads frequently, the book manages to hold together well.

Some Mormons might object to the way Krakauer treats the mainline Mormon church's beginnings, but I think his presentation is balanced. Also, I tremendously respect Krakauer for closing his book with a short, but honest, statement of his own worldview.

5 out of 5 stars Another Fine Work by Jon Krakauer.......2007-09-22

Highly recommended! Another excellent work by Krakauer. I imagine most of those who rate this work poorly, one or two stars, are more than likely Mormons or fundementalists. Just as any church, religion, corporation, government entity etc. doesn't like it's dirty laundry aired for all to see or have it's hypocrisy revealed, neither does the Church of Latter Day Saints & it's adherents. Unfortunately, you can never get to the truth of the matter if you deny that anything is wrong or that there is a problem. The Catholic Church hid it's problems with homosexuality & pedophilia for decades & forcefully denied there existence, Sadly, we now know it was & is all true. Well written, insightful, informative & a hell of a good read. If you enjoyed Everest Dreams, Into The Wild or Into Thin Air, then you should enjoy this excellent work!

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating review of Mormonism.......2007-09-21

Extremely well written and especially relevant since Mr. Romney is running for President - not that he is a fundamentalist. The history of the Mormon church is most interesting and the current beliefs and practices of the fundamentalists are frightening.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Gift.......2007-10-02

I bought this as a gift for my mother. She really likes the way the author described Heaven. She never looked at Heaven in this way before.

5 out of 5 stars Heaven.......2007-09-18

I found Dr. Alcorn's book, Heaven, very enlightening. It answered questions for me. He addressed many of the questions that I have had since the death of my son. His answers were based on scripture and he was honest in his beliefs. We can only know from what God has said in his word and that is always left up to interpretation. I pray that Dr. Alcorn is right in his analysis. His book brought me comfort and peace.

5 out of 5 stars I can't wait to get to Heaven.......2007-09-02

Randy Alcorn challelnges popular notions of heaven in thought provoking yet easy to understand style without sacrificing scholarly integrity. He cites numerous scripture passages as well as Biblical scholars to support his thesis and lays out a much richer and more interesting eternity than most of us have ever imagined. I highly recommend this book. It will provoke interesting discussions and force you to closely examine your notion of heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Heaven by Randy Alcorn.......2007-09-01

There are many books written on the subject Heaven, this book is the very best on that subject. The author stays with scripture like he should and makes the reading simple enough to stay interested. When you read this book it makes heaven beyond your wildest dreams. Its a place you don't want to miss.

5 out of 5 stars thorough researce.......2007-08-25

Alcorn has done his homework. I am purchasing these as gifts. It's helpful, especially when someone is grieving the loss of a loved one!

The Lamb's Supper: The Mass as Heaven on Earth reawakens a surprising ancient view of the Eucharist, as the harbinger of the supernatural drama described by the New Testament book of Revelation. Catholic theologian Scott Hahn thinks that many worshippers receive the sacrament of communion without ever considering its links to the end of the world, the Apocalypse, and the Second Coming. Hahn wants to change our minds; he wants us to know that "The Mass--and I mean every single Mass--is heaven on earth." Literally. So, Hahn declares, "Now heaven has been unveiled for us with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ ... Jesus Christ Himself says to you: 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with Me' (Rv. 3:20)." Hahn's enthusiasm, as evident even from these short quotes, is considerable--and infectious. Furthermore, he delivers his arguments with great levity (demonstrated in chapter titles such as "Oath Meal"), which makes The Lamb's Supper quite a tasty read. --Michael Joseph Gross

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all catholics and those seeking truth.......2007-09-15

This is the most influential book I have ever read in my life, period. It will completely change the way you approach Mass and your day to day life.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the Mass and Revelation.......2007-08-23

We've tought a few classes using this as a textbook and it's great. We've even had non-Catholics appreciate the connections made in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-07-09

Until I read this book as a Protestant exploring the Catholic faith, I had no idea what all is happening in the Mass. This book opened a whole new world to me.

5 out of 5 stars An Oasis of Truth.......2007-06-27

This book by Scott Hahn reveals the hidden mysteries of the Mass. It has greatly helped me find refreshment in this topsy-turvy world. A virtual oasis in the midst of the modern desert. Now I appreciate the Mass, finding deeper meaning in the actions, symbols, garments and liturgy that one encounters in the Mass. It is so biblical and truly reveals God's love for mankind. A great treasure to own. Truly, heaven has come to earth.

5 out of 5 stars Thank the Lord for Scott Hahn.......2007-06-01

I first heard of Scott Hahn from my Scripture class teacher who was a student of Scott Hahn. The one thing he always talked about is how central Scripture is to everything that the Church believes and teaches. I saw this book on my grandmother's bookshelf and asked if I could borrow only because the name sounded familiar and it had a nice cover. I cannot remember the last time I had a read a book in one day. I have heard so many descriptions of the end times that people have come up with based on the Book of Revelation, but Scott Hahn makes evident the central role that the Book of Revelation plays in the most Sacred event in the Church. Hearing details about his conversion story is also very interesting and it seems that every book of his has another detail of his conversion. I haven'[t said much about the contents of this particular book, but that is because my words cannot compare to Scott Hahn's and it would be fruitful to buy or borrow a copy of this book as soon as you can!

I must admit first I'm a Bill Johnson fan. No not like that idol worship stuff or stalker but I have been listening to his sermons on line for years and have enjoyed visiting his Church in Redding Ca. (Bethel) Anyway a great book to get your toes wet when diving into the reality of a Supernatural God and Lifestyle. Bill is a very sincere and caring man who is changing the way we view healing and the miraculous. "A day without the miraculous is a day wasted." This is a good read and will challenge your faith in the God of the Supernatural!

What happens to our loved ones when they die?

Is there a heaven?

Is there a true connection and communication between the living and the dead?

Allison DuBois invites us into her world where she delivers messages from our lost loved ones. She convinces us that those who have passed away are constantly with us, providing comfort, love, and support. They are as eager to reach us as we are to stay connected with them.

But the dead have a language of their own. They communicate through signs, dreams, songs, coincidences, and messages delivered in unexpected ways. Allison takes us on an odyssey of these signs — how to recognise them, how to read them, and how to interpret them. In these pages, you will meet people who have had both heartbreaking and heartwarming communication with the other side, providing comforting proof that our deceased loved ones stay with us and continue to share in the joys of our lives.

5 out of 5 stars We Are Not Their Heaven.......2007-09-30

This book has helped three of my friends, I then bought the CD which three more of my friends and my husband listened to and all got something different but healing from the book. It is not meant to persuade the skeptics, but rather to give help to those who have lost loved ones. It did however change my engineer husbands mind, when she described how the experiments were set up. Great book, great person.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended this book in my book.......2007-09-24

This is a comforting and easy-to-read book that is hard to put down. I read this book almost straight through. Allison is a brave and wonderful writer who does not attempt to be wordy or pretentious in her writing. I loved it so much that I recommended it to my readers in my book, "These Are My Final Wishes". I searched for a book like this since my mother passed in 1982. Thank you Allison DuBois.

1 out of 5 stars Boring,Boring,Boring and Totally Uninspiring!.......2007-09-23

This was the first book on intercessory prayer that I "tried"(unsuccessfully) to read. It was so boring and unmoving that I searched here at Amazon for others on this subject and came across Ronald Dunn's and was able to "look inside". As soon as I read the table of contents I knew this was the book for me,and I ordered it on the spot, and have not regretted that. So much more understandable and seemingly heartfelt, it touched my heart, where this book left me completely numb!

I would not recommend this to anyone, and would instead heartily recommend "Don't Just Stand There,Pray Something:The Incredible Power Of Intercessory Prayer" by Ronald Dunn. Which encourages you to begin your work immediately as a prayer warrior,if that is what is on your heart, and if that is the case this book really fires up your zeal for it. I'm so happy that the Dutch Sheet's book was from the library and I had not wasted any money for it!

4 out of 5 stars Very good book. Better than Yancy's effort........2007-04-20

Better and more practical than Phillip Yancy's book on prayer. This book offers solid advice on how to pray and the importance of persistence.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Find.......2007-01-19

This book is a great tool for study and understanding on the topic of prayer. Dutch Sheets presents prayer concepts in an amazing and insightful way, which has truly had an impact on my prayer life. He has ideas and thought provoking beliefs that I had never heard before and after reading this book, I have bougth multiple copies as gifts for others.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on prayer ever written!.......2007-01-18

I have read many books on prayer and none have impacted my prayer life as much as this one. It gives you a new attitude towards the importance of prayer, and it gives you practical examples of how to transform your prayer life. It explains the authority every believer has in Christ and teaches how to walk in that authority. Very motivating!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely worth reading!.......2007-01-11

This book has taught me why I have to pray and more importantly:
inspired me to pray more!It also gave me a new understanding of my authority as praying child of God.
