Super Reader.......2007-08-02

Here is the fist collection of Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. 'A Scandal in Bohemia', 'The Red-Headed League' and 'The Adventure of the Speckled Band' stand out to me. 'The Boscombe Valley Mystery' is also of note, for secondary characters. Most excellent mystery and adventure to be found.

From Information Literacy & Technology Class.......2006-12-22

This book is a mystery book with twelve individual stories. This book was written a while ago and it was not aimed for young children. Because of this, the book is very dry and reading it will take a while. The stories themselves are good, but it is not a book you will just sit down and read all at once. The story's plot lines are quite original and this book includes some of Arthur Conan Doyle's best stories, "The Red-Headed League", "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle", and "The Adventure of the Speckled Band". Each story is in the eyes of Holmes' good friend, Dr. John Watson. This makes the book a bit more interesting for the reader. Each story is about 25 pages long. This makes nice breaks for the reader. I liked how this book had each mystery explained to the reader at the end how Holmes figured it all out. By the end of the book, the reader starts to pick out important information used to solve the mystery. I didn't like this book, however, because Arthur Conan Doyle did not give the reader all the information to solve the mystery by yourself. Overall, I would say this is a good book that I would recommend.

The Ultimate Classic Collection of Short Stories.......2006-08-24

Following are brief reviews of each of the excellent collection of twelve original Sherlock Holmes short stories that Arthur Conan Doyle published in a newspaper serial in the 1890's:

Scandal in Bohemia **** - Fun story. Holmes makes use of his disguises and acting talents to almost reel in a smart and tricky woman, who has acquired means to blackmail the future King of Bohemia.

The Red-Headed League **** - Another Fun story. But the crooks could have gotten away with their plan by simply continuing to operate The Red-Headed League until after they finished their criminal activities.

A Case of Identity **** - A woman is jilted at the altar, and a mystery ensues. Nobody ends up murdered or physically hurt in this story - just a serious case of a broken heart, with money as the motive.

Boscombe Valley Mystery ***** - Top-notch Holmes mystery involving blackmail, murder, secrets, and romance. This story does not seem dated at all; and, if you replaced the carriages with automobiles, could have taken place last week in any small rural town in England or America.

The Five Orange Pips **** - Skullduggery involving an ex-Confederate Colonel, and the KKK. Somewhat spooky, but the motive for the murders is a bit shaky, and the ending a bit loose.

The Man with the Twisted Lip ***** - Holmes disguises himself as an opium smoker to help get to the bottom of the disappearance of an affluent father. The story involves all sorts of unsavory characters and situations - Victorian London's East Side was not so different from the inner city of any large modern Metropolis.

The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle **** - A short Christmas story of thievery and intrigue, involving a goose and a jewel.

The Adventure of the Speckled Band *** - Good mystery, but not accurate on details... after reading on the Internet how many technical errors this story has, it hard to give it too high a rating. This case involves murders, for the express goal of monetary gain.

The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb **** - One of the shorter adventures and spookier than normal; Holmes solves the mystery and thwarts the criminals' continuing their counterfeiting, but the good-hearted bad guy sidekicks and their murderous leader end up fleeing the scene of the crime before they can be apprehended.

The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor **** - A little too far-fartched, this story does have a lot of interesting situations... one is that there are a lot of Americans in it, and another is that Holmes says that he believes England and America will eventually form a "world-wide country".

The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet **** - Decent story. First time that Holmes seems to use the phrase "when you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth".

The Adventure of the Copper Beeches ***** - More rural skulduggery. This very believable tale rivals THE ENGINEER'S THUMB for spookiness.

These stories are all now in the public domain; hence the multiple versions distributed by various publishers. These stories are also available from various sources on the Internet.

In college I went through a phase where I read all the Sherlock Holmes stories. Once I got started reading Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories, I didn't want to stop. It was sad when I read the last story.

Now years later it was fun to read them again. I enjoy the Sherlock Holmes short stories more than one of the novels. For me one of the most enjoyable parts of a Sherlock Holmes story is reading about what happened, and then reading how Sherlock Holmes solved the problem. A collection of short stories provides this experience many times.

This collection has many classics. It has the famous line "It is an old maxim of mine that when you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." (The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet.)

It is also interesting to see what life was like in England 100 years ago. They had the underground, but use carriages, there was lots of travel by train, and life in general was a bit rougher than today.

If you haven't read any Sherlock Holmes stories, this is a good place to start.

A Detective Classic That Fizzles as Literature.......2007-10-06

"The Hound of the Baskervilles," originally published in 1902, is an engrossing "who-dun-it" murder mystery, featuring observant detective Sherlock Holmes and his comparatively humble partner Dr. Watson at their best. Labelled "a classic among classics" by mystery aficionados, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's masterfully written tale poses the problem--who killed Sir Charles Baskerville?--and offers well-placed clues en route to uncovering the resolution. Set a few hours by train from London on the eerie Devonshire moor, where commoners affirm occasional sightings of a huge black hound-shaped beast, the story offers a suspenseful blend of science and the supernatural, with infallible Holmesian logic predictably winning out by story's end.

My only reservation about the book is that it is perhaps a little too formulaic in composition. Among the murder suspects are many: the butler Barrymore and his wife, the neighboring Dr. Mortimer, the argumentative lawyer Frankland with his telescope, the energetic butterfly catcher Stapleton and his sister, the typist Laura Lyons in the adjacent village, the escaped convict Selden, a mysterious black-bearded man seen in London, and, of course, the elusive hound who murmurs and roars on the moor. Watson's thorough narration and detailed letters to Holmes carefully lead us step-by-step through many of the possibilities; however, in my opinion, the overall plotline is more methodical and prematurely revealing than it needs to be. Already by two-thirds of the way through the story, when Holmes, who is supposed to be in London, surprisingly appears on the moor as "the man on the tor," we learn who the murderer must be, and the remaining one-third of the book is devoted to detective-style collection of evidence and explanation and recap of the mystery. That's fine as a study for detectives-in-training, but might the book have had a chance of rising higher as a great work of literature if the author had put more effort into concealing Holmes' conclusion until later in the story, thereby creating a more sustained degree of suspense and intrigue?

For the benefit of anyone who has not yet read the book, I do not want to give too much away, but as a hint in solving the murder mystery I will say that it helps to "follow the money" as you read. After childless Sir Charles, who had made his fortune in overseas speculation, mysteriously dies, next-of-kin nephew Sir Henry returns to England to take control of the estate. Assuming there is some financial motivation for the crime, as there usually is, who among the suspects, especially in light of their past circumstances and misfortune, could profit most from seeing both Charles and Henry dead? Clue: no, the butler didn't do it!

A triumph of atmosphere.......2007-09-17

The setting is the star of Arthur Conan Doyle's atmospheric "The Hound of the Baskervilles," his most popular Sherlock Holmes story. With its barren fog-shrouded wastes, Neolithic ruins, and the treacherous Grimpen Mire, the bleak moor Doyle describes in such delicious detail is the ideal background for a creepy Gothic mystery. Does a cursed hellhound stalk the last heir to the Baskerville fortune? Only Sherlock Holmes can answer that, but for a good portion of the novel Watson is left to investigate on his own. The absence of the hyper-rational detective allows the supernatural mystique of this puzzle develop without distraction before the master detective steps in to dispel the mystery. This is an uncommonly fun read.

The Best Sherlock Holmes -- And That's Sayin' Plenty!.......2007-09-12

I have read and enjoyed many a good Sherlock Holmes story (e.g. "The Red-Headed League" is a winner), but at the very top of the book stack I would place "The Hound of the Baskervilles". Who could ever forget the atmosphere that Arthur Conan Doyle evokes by his use of those misty moors!

In teaching English (Literature) to a class of 7th & 8th grade boys, I was at first a bit hesitant to introduce this novel as our text. Would a group of squirrelly junior high boys find anything of interest in a book written in 1901? Answer: I needn't have worried. They loved it (and so did I)! The fog from the moors drifted right into our classroom.

First-rate mystery tale with one of the most famous fictional characters ever created. ENJOY! (But keep an eye out for a frightful luminescent hound next time you're walking home at night - just in case).

I have lost track of how many times I have read this, or how many different adaptations I have watched, or listened to. I still enjoy it every single time. A true classic. Suspense, horror and sneakiness abound, particularly between the major characters. What is going on? It keeps you captivated all along, should not be too many people that don't like this. Large black ghost hounds, your Jane Austen type gentlemen in trouble, dodgy locals, and the brilliance of Holmes.

Coyle Energetically Ignites His Story [132].......2007-07-08

Some proclaim Doyle's greatest work to be "The Hound of the Baskervilles." And, it may be just that.

Set on a British estate, mixing science fictional accounts with old wive's tales and mythology, it is not a standard tale of urban sleuthing. This involves Holmes outside of London, and working with the "plebians" or "ordinary people" in his mission to save "Sir Henry" from encountering the same fate as his uncle Sir Charles Baskerville.

There are tales of adultery, slanting lies and rendevous at late hours of the night in the moor which flanks the estate of Sir Henry. The evenings overlooking the moor are often disturbed by the noisy backdrop of a hound howling, but not the sound of a hound ever heard by anyone before.

The moor is dangerously dotted with mires in which a step could mean one's end. Muddy and deep, the step into such places becomes a trap for the unwary. Hence, the moor includes dangers beyond its sounds, it is a place where young and old should avoid unless they know which places are safe and which are not.

An entomologist named Stapleton knows the moor inside and out. He befriends Sir Henry and Watson. He cannot meet Sherlock Holmes who must stay in London for other cases. This story follows the day-to-day discoveries of Watson, more than others.

In the end, the intertwining of evil that haunts the people in the tiny hamlet becomes staggering and one must wonder - could a village of such small size really have so many people within it keeping such deadly secrets without one of the others (if not all of the others) knowing? Probably not. But, who cares.

And, I lastly note that Doyle certainly was more than a mystery writer. His prose rivals Forster or Waugh. For instance, he wrote:"We looked back on it now; the slanting rays of a low sun turning the streams into threads of gold and glowing on the red earth new turned by the plough and the broad tangle of the woodlands.. . Now and then we passed a moorland cottage, walled and roofed with stone, with no creeper to break its harsh outline. Suddenly we looked down into a cuplike depression, patched with stunted oaks and firs which had been twisted and bent by the fury of years of storm."

With prose like that, you only conclude: This is more than a mystery novel.

Give this book to a winsome young boy and you might inspire a scientist. I loved this book as a boy and recently bought a copy for my nephew. I read it quickly before wrapping it. Wonderful stories even if they are a little dated. Enjoy!

Giving geeks a good name........2005-10-27

Encyclopedia Brown was my childhood hero. I liked him so much I named my cat Sally Kimball. Not one to stand out in a crowd, Cyc (on the covers of the old scholastic paperbooks) looked like a carbon copy of my 2nd grade self. Of course, I was sitting inside reading about his adventures during recess, not solving crimes, with wits perhaps not quite so sharp. And my suburb did not have quite as many opportunities for me to distinguish myself with crime-solving ability. Still, Cyc taught me lessons that I saw myself one day applying, once I escaped Red China.
This was before I got into snorting Pixie Stix.

This story is about a boy who starts a detective business and his name is Leroy Brown, but all his friends call him Encyclopedia. His father is the cheif of police and no one in the city of Idaville(where he lives)had gotten away with any crime in over one year! Whenever his father gets a hard case, he tells it to Leroy and it's solved very fast, but it's their little secret. The answers to all the cases are in the back of the book, but sometimes it's fun to solve them yourself. Some cases are easier than others and some are harder than others but they all make this a good book!

This Penguin edition of Conan Doyle's deductive logic contains 8 mysteries-7 of which are serious crimes-solved brilliantly by Victorian London's genius sleuth, Sherlock Holmes. These exploits have been faithfully recorded by his friend and ally, Dr. Watson, who also resides at 221-B Baker Street. Doyle's literary style includes the following elements: ample dialogue, a detailed denouement which fills in all the loose ends, and occasional personal touches. Watson appears at
times as bewildered, disappointed, deductive in his own right,
and truly concerned for Holmes' physical and mental health. Sherlock is presented as a man of personal honor and unflappable integrity, compassionate toward victims while ruthless toward criminals, and in one tale very human-delighting in the praise and recognition from Justice professionals. In addition he rarely extracts a serious fee for his services.

The settings for these 8 mysteries range from six in the country to two in town. Holmes is sought out by clients in four tales, while he actively helps the police in the other four; one
mystery he stumbles into while holiday. Most of these crimes involve cruel murder or bizarre death; two concern precious gems and one delves into English history. Readers will find a cypher in one tale and a multi-generational puzzler in another. The knowledge of Geometry will prove valuable on a treasure hunt. This book was great!! It had eight different cases, and all were great. My favorites were The Adventure of the Speckled Band, Silver Blaze, and the Adventure of the Six Napoleans. If you enjoy classics, mysteries, or anything related to o.k. creepy stories, I suggest you read this book.

A Superlative collection.......2000-05-23

This is a must book for every new Sherlock Holmes reader. For anyone out there who has not read any of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries, this book introduces the reader to some of the best Sherlock Holmes mysteries. Silver Blaze, The adventure of the Speckled Band, The adventure of the dancing men, The adventure of the Blue Carbuncle are a few of the Holmes mysteries presented in this book. Each of the mysteries presented in this book expose different facets of Holmes and he is in his elements in each of them. That the book is in large print is icing on the cake.

The Great Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a fantastic book. Having amazing description I can paint a very detailed picture in my mind. Although it may have short stories in it, these are stories that have had a lot of thought put in to them. I can tell this by how amazing Sherlock Holmes is able to figure out his cases. He focuses on ever little detail to figure the most difficult cases. It's especially amazing how he figures it out so quickly. Hearing this it may seem as if it is impossible, but when you read the book, in the end, when Holmes tells the other characters how he figured out this case, he explains it so well that it is quite believable. This book is so great that I can't even explain the amount of talent was used to make these stories possible.
Although this book was a wonderful book, it also had some down sides to it. When reading this book, in the beginning of each story, the author went a little too quickly in to the case so the reader doesn't understand what's going on until the middle of the story. But to make up for his rushed start the author explains the case with much detail and informing the reader on every little detail about the case. All in all, The Great Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a very good book that I would recommend to anybody that likes mysteries, even if it does have some down sides.

Good to read if you like mysteries.......2005-01-27

This was a pretty good book. It was kinda boring for a long time but if you get into it it's not that bad.The lanuge they use in the book(old english)can get really annoying. Sometimes it is really hard to understand. Overall it was a pretty good book, but it was log and sometimes really boring.I recomend this book to people who have alot of time to read, its long and hard to understand.

Was I ever surprised!.......2001-02-16

When my son and husband chose The Great Adventures of Sherlock Holmes for our monthly book discussion, I was certain I'd be bored senseless but figured it was only fair that they choose some of the titles, too. Far from bored, however, I actually loved the droll accounts of Sherlock's sleuthing talents. In fact, as I read, I could "hear" a radio broadcast of the stories in my head. As it turns out, recordings of the mysteries are available, as are films of the adventures. It will be interesting to see how these compare to the version in my head.

If you are sharing these stories with young readers, you may want to read the first story aloud. This proved helpful to my son, who initially had a little trouble "getting into" the rhythm of the narrative. After "The Solitary Cyclist," however, he was happily on his own. He is now tackling a two-volume collection of Doyle's mysteries.

Doyle at his best.......1999-05-02

This book is great. Although there are two other books like this one, I prefer this one the best. My favorite mystery in it is "The Red Headed League." An honorable mention is "The Engineer's Thumb." You won't regret buying this book, so... go ahead!

A great book!.......2001-01-25

I really enjoyed this book, although the words were really long. Sherlock Holmes used such ingenuity to solve his cases, proving that the author is also pretty smart. I have some advice for readers, though: don't read it at night. There's a murder in just about every case!

The Game's afoot again as David Timson narrates the second volume of The Adventures. He reads with verve, alacrity, joy and understanding. His vocal character stylizations are a delight for both the uninitiated in the genre and the seasoned Sherlockian campaigner.

I've found it!.......2007-06-19

This was the first sentence ever spoken by Holmes, and we could all use it as well, when describing this collection. This is another review by one of the kids of "love my kids". Holmes has always been a joy to read, the action well placed, the humor meshing cleanly with the drama, and the cases truly challenging. You will not see most of the answers coming, so if you like that kinda thing, this book is not for you. I agree with the other guy who's review is above mine, in that reading it in spurts is a good idea.

A Modern Collection of The Adventures.......2005-11-22

This well-bound hardcover book is a medium brown color without the dust jacket, and has gold lettering on the spine. There's also a lightly embossed picture of the front cover on the hardcover.

The inside pages are made of high quality paper, and there are about 11 illustrations throughout the book, including the front cover.

The illustrations are printed in color on glossy paper, and are not the original illustrations. They look like oil paintings, mostly of the characters in the book, and the faces have an intentionally "blotchy" but artistic look to them, in higher contrast than portraits meant to capture real life.

The print looks to be about medium height (say, 10-12 point) printed without columns on each page. Each page has a fairly wide margin -- almost like a textbook designed to allow the student to take notes.

At a few points in the book there are footnotes that describe words that may not be understandable to the modern reader. For example, in The Man with the Twisted Lip, there is a footnote to the phrase "mouseline de soie". The footnote clarifies that this means "silk muslin".

The book's weight and size makes it comfortable to hold and carry around with you if need be.

If you're looking for a book that captures the feel of the Strand magazine, along with the original illustrations, this is not the book for you.

But if you'd like a good quality book with a modern feel, I think you'll be very happy with this edition's construction.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes contains some of the best stories in the collection such as the Red Headed League, A Scandal in Bohemia, The Five Orange Pips, The Man with the Twisted Lip, The Blue Carbuncle, and The Speckled Band. There are 12 stories in all, as well as an Afterward that describes the growing popularity of the stories as well as some parallels between the author, Arthur C. Doyle and John Watson.

Given the quality of the stories, I think the beginner or the veteran Holmes enthusiast will enjoy reading this book, and will think it money well spent for its entertainment value.

A "Fun" Listen.......2005-08-31

Listening to David Timson read these stories provides a delightful respite during a busy day. He handles the characters well, so it is easy to follow the dialog in the stories. I also enjoy the inclusion of classical music at the beginning of each story as well as between some of the scenes.

The best of the Sherlock Holmes short story collections! .......2004-08-17

Although he also wrote several novels featuring the world's greatest fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, it was especially in his short stories that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle perfected the Holmes formula. And of the five collections of Holmes short stories (about a dozen in each collection), "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (published in 1892) was the first and is easily the most popular and best of the five. It contains all except one of the five all-time most popular short stories in the Sherlock Holmes canon (A Scandal in Bohemia, The Red-headed League, The Blue Carbuncle, and The Speckled Band), as well as some other gems like The Five Orange Pips. For newcomers to Holmes, this there is no better place to start than with the dozen stories that comprise "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes". And for long-time fans, these are old favorites worth reading again and again.

***A Scandal in Bohemia, 1891 - The very first and one of the top five Sherlock Holmes short stories. After some brilliant detective work involving disguises and acting, Holmes is outwitted by the woman Irene Adler in his quest to help the hereditary king of Bohemia regain a scandalous photograph from her.
***The Red-headed League, 1891 - Generally regarded as all-time second best Sherlock Holmes story, this bizarre tale features a pawnbroker who is paid money to join the mysterious Red-Headed League and copy out Encyclopedia Britannica, as part of an ingenious scheme to rob a bank.
A Case of Identity, 1891 - Holmes solves the mystery of Mary Sutherland's fiance who disappears on the morning of his wedding, unmasking it as scheme hatched by her greedy step-father.
The Boscombe Valley Mystery, 1891 - Charles McCarthy's son seems the obvious murderer of his father after a violent quarrel, so it is up to Holmes to show that the murder has its real roots in the Australian past of the dead man and his landlord.
**The Five Orange Pips, 1891 - One of Doyle's personal favorites, this tale recounts the death of two men, both preceded by the arrival of five mysterious orange pips. In one of his few failures, Holmes connects the events to the Ku Klux Klan, but not soon enough to prevent another death.
*The Man with the Twisted Lip, 1891 - A baffling mystery about Mr. Neville St. Clair who disappears from a room into thin air, and a professional beggar who is the suspected murderer.
***The Blue Carbuncle, 1892 - Another favorite all-time top 5 Holmes story, as Holmes unravels how a blue diamond ended up inside the goose intended for Mr. Henry Baker's Christmas dinner.
***The Speckled Band, 1892 - Universally regarded as the most popular short story in the Sherlock Holmes canon, and easily one of the more suspenseful and chilling. The engaged Helen Stoner is terrified when she hears the same strange whistling that preceded the death of her twin sister in a locked bedroom shortly before her wedding. Her step-father Dr. Grimesby Roylott, a evil and greedy man with a passion for exotic pets like his cheetah and baboon, is the suspected villain - but how could he do it?
