Excellent book, another great for Eleanor...
Large patterns and super instructions.
Great quick projects.......2007-01-03
Eleanor Burns is one of my favorite quilt authors. Not only is everything explained well but good illustrations are used to guide one if a problem does arise.
I have just finished doing a quick project from this book. It is called Cold Hands, Warm Heart. Now, if I should need a special gift for someone I have it. I am getting ready to work on another project from this book ASAP.

If you like country..................2006-10-05
then this is a book for you. The book runs 207 pages not including the many templates. It contains instructions for tree decorations, stockings, tablerunners, placemats, pillows, 7 wallhangings, 3 quilts, 4 projects for children and even a christmas jacket for Fido! Twenty-eight projects in all. However, because I don't do country, there is only one project I would consider doing. I ordered this book through the mail and had I seen it at a bookstore I wouldn't have gotten it. I gave it 3 stars because I'm sure that many of you country quilters would find it appealing.
Note: I've decided to give it 4 stars!
Excellent Book.......2006-08-15
I always enjoy using the patterns by Eleanor Burns. They are very explicit and easy to follow, especially for beginners. The directions and pictures really make it easy for quilters.

Creative way to tell the meaning of Christmas.......2000-10-20
A farm family grows Christmas trees to sell, and the farmer's wife chooses the most beautiful tree for her own family, putting a sign on it, "Not for Sale". But when a poor family comes to the tree lot to see if they can pick out a tree from the free area (trees that have missing branches or crooked trunks), the poor family's little girl sees the beautiful tree and asks if she can choose that one. Everyone is embarrased that she asks, as the adults all know her family can't afford the tree. The farmer's wife responds that she is sorry, the tree isn't for sale...because they'd like the girl's family to have it as a gift. The book ends, "Yes, it was a great sacrifice. But it brought even greater joy. Isn't that just like Christmas?" The illustrations are very kid-friendly and fun. Applicable Bible verses are at the bottom of every other page. A creative and wonderful story.
not just for christmas reading.......1999-02-02
this book was a suprising enjoyable tale of right living for young children and adults. Read it again, mom!

Can't really see what the big deal is..........2006-10-30
From the back cover:
Holiday stranger?
She was beautiful, aloof...and the only thing Sawyer recognized since the accident that had stolen his memory. Instinctively he knew they weren't strangers--not when his emotions reacted so strongly, and not when he could almost feel being intimately close to her. But what was Dr. Rebecca Morehouse hiding from him?
Rebecca was denying she'd ever seen Sawyer before--and was frantic to keep the incredibly appealing Navy SEAL out of her life. Because even if Sawyer's memories had been taken, her own were all too real. After all, she had her own reminder of their very passionate encounter!
And my review:
First off, I should probaby state that I've never read any of the other books in the "Men of the Double C Ranch" series, so that might have influenced my decision a bit. Not that A CHILD FOR CHRISTMAS doesn't work as a stand-alone (it does), but as with most linked books, you always feel like you're missing a little something when you haven't read the rest of the series.
But that wasn't really my complaint with the book. First off, I have a hard time enjoying the "hidden baby" plot, since I find it really hard to respect a woman who would purposely keep a child a secret from his father. It always colors my opinion of the heroine, and the author has to work extra hard to make me like her. And while I won't blast this book for using an extremely overused plot device (amnesia), I will say that I've read books that handle it better.
My main problem was with the hero. I couldn't stand the way he immediately hit on the heroine, and continued to do so, even when she made it clear that she wasn't interested. His ham-handed attempts at gaining her favor came across as sleazy rather than sexy or romantic. I kind of felt like he was just looking for some cheap sex, and maybe to jog his memory, then that he was acting out of any real interest for the heroine. And guys--when a woman says no, it means no! Trying to force her to date you is not romantic, it's creepy.
The hero turned me off so much that I quit reading the book less than half of the way through. I would only recommend this if you are already a fan of the author, and/or you want to complete the series. Otherwise, if you're looking at this because it's a Christmas romance, don't bother. There are better ones out there.
It's Just Different.......2002-12-02
If this book doesn't seem to have the sense of family that the other books prior to it that's probably because the character that it focuses on, Sawyer, has amnesia. He feels very disconnected with his family and as a result they're not going to be in the story as much. Who he does feel connected to in a very powerful way is the only woman he has ever loved, which is a hallmark of the "Men of the Double C" series. This is affirmed at the end when Sawyer sees Rebecca looking at him the same way that his sister-in-laws look at his brother.
The biggest difference in this story is you are dragged more into a darker side of things than you were in the other books. Particularly the shattering loneliness that Sawyer feels in his live. Ms. Leigh does a fantastic job of illustrating this. What makes Rebecca and Sawyer's reunion so satifisfying in the end is that we have been there with Sawyer in his loneliness.
Like the other stories in this series it's a great one. I, too, am sorry that the series ended with Tristan's story, but I suspect that the town of Weaver still has some more stories to tell. Besides, we still don't know what happened to the FIRST Sawyer now do we?
Great Writing.......2000-01-20
I loved the Navy Seal story with Sawyer and the Dr. in his life and hearing more about the Clay brothers and their families. I am anxious to read about Tristan but do not want the series to end.
Allison Leigh is great!.......1999-11-26
I feel a little guilty giving this book less than a five point rating, because it was a good book. However in keeping with the Men Of the Double C series, as a huge fan of this author and this awesome series I came away a little disapointed with the story of Sawyer Clay. I found that it simply lacked the since of family and also the passion that the other 3 books in the series had. Yes it still mentions the other members of the family, but it just didn't seem the same. However, it still had some great moments which are characteristic of all Allison Leigh books. I can't wait to read Tristan's story and as I have said in my reviews of the other books, I hate to see this series come to an end.
Book Description
Rob wants to get his father something special for Christmas this year -- something that shows how much he really loves him. But it's Christmas Eve, and he doesn't have much money to spend. What could he possibly get? Suddenly, Rob thinks of the best gift of all...
Author of nearly a hundred books for children and adults, and winner of both the Pulitzer and Nobel prizes, Pearl S. Buck has captured the spirit of Christmas in this elegant, heartwarming story about a boy's gift of love. Originally published in 1955, this classic story is now being issued, for the first time ever, as a picture book with glorious full-color art by acclaimed artist Mark Buehner.
A welcome addition to everyone's holiday collection, this timeless treasure will bring the true meaning of Christmas to the entire family for generations to come.

great family book.......2007-01-31
I ordered this book for a friend who was unfamiliar with Amazon. It was given as a gift for Christmas to her father. After using Amazon and receiving the merchandise, she was very pleased and will be using Amazon in the future. As for the book, it was a treasure to her father and it in her words is sure to be a family treasure and tradition at Christmas time. She encouraged me to seek a copy for my family and myself. Amazon has it all.
Read this to teens to cure the "I'm the Center of the Universe" blues!.......2007-01-23
Pearl S. Buck does it again...catches the essence of human caring! I gave this book to a family of friends who are milk farmers. My friend is a new grandmother, and she loved it! I just couldn't keep it for myself!
Precious.......2007-01-11
Kids must learn values. This is a good book for it. Precious illustrations and a classic of literature, perfect for bed time at Christmas.
Brought Tears To My Eyes.......2006-11-15
This story is beautifully written and illustrated. It will be a Christmas story that we will read year after year in our family. It is a poignant tale of a boy and his father and the realization by the boy that he is truly loved and wants to return that love. As an adult, it makes me look back on my childhood and love my parents even more by seeing the small things they did for me. It brought tears to my eyes.
We own many of Mark Buehner's books and that is why I purchased this Pearl S. Buck book. I was so pleasantly surprised by how wonderful the story was as well as the illustrations. Be sure to look for the figures hidden in the illustrations. Mark Buehner is famous for doing this in his illustrations. Mary, Joseph, the Christ Child, angels, and animals are hidden in the clouds over the barn on the cover. You will find characters throughout the book in the clouds, in the grain of the woodwork, and in the fabric of quilts and furniture. My children love looking for these hidden objects.
Great for Very Young.......2006-11-11
I disagree that this book is not for the very young. We got this book for our daughter when she was 20 months old. (It may not work in some families, but we have found it's the topics that aren't discussed that scare children.)* It has been a favorite year after year. We love this book because it gets at the SPIRIT of Christmas. A boy truly gives of himself to ensure a happy holiday for his family, especially his father who normally doesn't get a break. This book teaches empathy by example without preaching. The illustrations are beautiful and so is the prose. We've seen a few books that try to share the same message but fail because adults in the stories TELL the children they should buy or do things for others or they employ subtle guilt (but don't kid yourself, even young children sense that). Highly reccommended for all ages.
*a previous reviewer said there was a problem with the reference to the deceased father many years after this special holiday [after the boy has a family of his own]. The reader does not know how or when the father died and it is not emphasized. The adult son is only remembering his father.

It's almost Christmas and it hasn't snowed yet. As the farmer naps on his small farm, he dreams of being covered in a gentle blanket of new snow. Then, one by one, he dreams of each of his five animals (aptly named One, Two, Three, Four, and Five) being covered as well. When he awakens, he discovers that real snow--not dream snow--has fallen. And "Oh my! Oh my! I almost forgot," the farmer shouts, and, bundling up, hurries out to his tree (named Tree) with a box and a sack, looking remarkably familiar in his white beard and red suit. After decorating Tree, the farmer shouts "Merry Christmas to all!" and pushes a button for a surprise Yuletide jingle.
Young fans of Eric Carle's The Very Quiet Cricket, The Very Clumsy Click Beetle, and other multisensory books, will delight in pushing the same microchip button the farmer pushes to hear the tinkling, oddly eerie holiday tune. In an even more unusual departure from standard picture books, Carle inserts a clear plastic sheet, covered with snowflakes and a white blanket, before each illustration of the dreaming farmer and his animals. Turn the plastic page to discover what kind of critter lies beneath the snow. Carle's magnificent collages, as always, are the heart and soul of his books. (Ages 3 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

"The pictures are in Carle's trademark richly colored and textured collages that capture the snowy magic of Christmas." (Kirkus Reviews)

Dream Snow.......2007-01-16
What a delightful book! Not only does it help develop a child's counting skills, but the pictures are wonderful and the surprise ending is sure to bring a smile! I not only have a copy of this book for my own child, but have given copies as gifts.
Dram Snow by Eric Carle.......2007-01-10
Although I liked this book (which I purchased for my grandkids), it is not one of my favorite Eric Carle books. It plays music at the end of the story, but it is very short and not very loud. I did like the see-through pages throughout the book.
Dream Snow.......2007-01-10
A delightful tale to brighten the holidays. This is one of Carle's finest!!! Each time I read it the children in the class were tickled with the magic at the end!! I would recommend it to moms,, dads, grams and teachers!!!
transmits the magic of Christmas like few other books.......2006-12-15
I have read this to my kids more than 100 times, and every time I feel as moved by the story as they are. This is simple and beautiful experience, bringing me back to dream moments in my childhood that now belongs to my children.

Hilarious.......2004-10-02
Hank the cowdog is "head of ranch security," and tend to act like Barney Fife. the entire seires of Hank the Cowdog stories are hilarious. The story is told from the perspective of Hank and the animal characters in this story, such as Drover, the young pup in training for ranch security, are constantly causing problems for Hank. In one story Hank gets sick after eating a frying pan full of bacon grease. He knows what he should and should not do, but always finds himself being overcome by his true nature--egotistical, gluttonous, etc.
Read this book and you will be addicted to Hank.
My Hank Review.......2004-05-14
This is one of my favriote books it is funny and exciting. It takes the perspective of a cowdog on a ranch in east texas. That thinks he is head of ranch security and goes through a lot of hillarius storys.

This Christmas, celebrate the joys of the season with a trio of exquisitely crafted, richly romantic tales by three of the brightest stars in contemporary fiction—bestselling authors Kay Hooper, Iris Johansen, and Fayrene Preston. Filled with passion, drama, and a touch of magic, this festive gathering of classic stories—available for the first time in ten years—tells about the lives and loves of one unforgettable family and the enchanted heirloom that links one generation to the next.
Christmas Past by Iris Johansen
Killara, Arizona, 1893. Kevin Delaney had heard his share of tall tales, but none could match the one told by the Gypsy beauty he found rummaging in the attic of Killara, his family’s estate. The waif claimed to have traipsed halfway around the world simply to recover an old, long-forgotten mirror. But Zara St. Cloud knows it is no ordinary mirror—and she can see that the striking Delaney is no ordinary man. While he doesn’t believe her talk of mystical relics and fortune-telling, there’s no doubt that a kind of magic is at work on his heart—just in time for Christmas.
Christmas Present by Fayrene Preston
True love remains elusive for Bria Delaney. But when she joins her parents at Killara for the holidays, Bria discovers an unusual mirror that reveals far more than her reflection. Appearing in the glass is a startlingly handsome man who just as
mysteriously disappears—until she meets him in person that very night. Kells Braxton is visiting on business, but the desire he stirs in Bria is anything but professional—and the mirror foretells their every intense encounter, leading to a Christmas they’ll never forget.…
Christmas Future by Kay Hooper
A heartbreaking vision in the legendary Delaney mirror drove Brett Delaney to the other side of the world years before. Now his father’s death brings him part of his inheritance: the mirror—and the unbearable prophesy it offers sends him home to Killara this Christmas, determined to save the home he loves and the woman he’s always loved.

Now his father’s death brings him part of his inheritance: the mirror—and the unbearable prophesy it offers sends him home to Killara this Christmas, determined to save the home he loves and the woman he’s always loved.

The Delaney Christmas Carol.......2006-03-10
Have the series of the Delaney's and this was the missing book. Pleased to find it and enjoyed it very much.
Loving it!.......2005-12-14
This is the first story that I came across about the Delaneys. I absolutely love Iris Johansen's books and I was thrilled to read this! It is one of the best and it has made me interested in finding all of the books that cover the Delaneys. An awesome read, I couldn't put it down for a second and when it ended, I wanted more. I recommend this to anyone!
I can't get enough of the Delaneys. More! More! More!!!.......1999-04-03
This is a lovely 3 in 1 book of the Delaney's: "Christmas Past", "Christmas Present" and "Christmas Future." A lovely mirror carved with holly was supposedly given to Shamus Delaney by the gypsies. Succeeding generations have discovered that it is a magical mirror enabling only Delaneys to see past, present and future. Don't miss Dominic and Elspeth's story in "This Fierce Splendor"--the one that started it all!
I loved Iris Johansen's "Christmas Past" because here we get a glimpse of how Silver Savron is doing, as well as the love story of Rising Star's son. Zara St. Cloud is outcast even among her fellow gypsies. She is desperate to prove she has Delaney blood in her by searching for the mirror. Kevin Delaney is bored. When he finds a housebreaker at Killara, he is determined that she will be his Christmas amusement. Hot!
An enchanting tale of love in the past, present, and future........1999-01-02
This book tells the story of a mirror that brings love to those who look into it. It can drive people away, bring them home, prevent events from happening, and help events occur. No matter what a person sees in this mysterious mirror, the mirror brings love to many of the people who have looked into it.

A Great Chrstmas Tale.......2005-12-27
I used to check this book out from the library for my children evey year, and the beautiful story with the gentle surprise ending always touched me and my kids. Family togetherness, simple gifts, and overcoming hardship and disappointment are themes here. It is not religious, and so should be appreciated by parents and families of diverse faiths who try to keep Christmas but aren't ready to emphasize the theology found in so many Christmas books.
I wrote the original publisher last year asking for a re-issue so I could send this as a gift, and it is delightful to see it again in print thanks to Sleeping Bear Press. Buy several and support small publishers!
Perfect for the Holiday Season.......2005-12-22
I was delighted to find Apple Tree Christmas is in print again. As a child who grew up in the area where Trinka grew up, I cherish the images the story churns up in my own childhood. The story is a perfect illustration of the real meaning of Christmas. It captures the snowy whimsical nature of Christmas in Michigan perfectly. A must have for any mid-western child, or any child that matter!
Back into print for the Christmas season enjoyment of a whole new generation of young readers.......2005-12-12
Originally published more than twenty years ago, "Apple Tree Christmas" is an entertainingly written picturebook by award-winning children's book author Trinka Hakes Noble which is enhanced with her watercolor artistry. The old apple tree on the Ansterburg family farm next to their barn had provided sweet apples for pies and apple butter. It's twining vines provided a place to swing and climb. And one special branch was Katrina's spot to sit and sketch and daydream of her future as an artist. But just before Christmas, an ice storm brought down the lovely old tree, and along with it, Katrina's special place to draw and create and dream. Christmas will be ruined this year and for many years to come! Until Papa did some very special things that enabled the old apple tree to continue as a part of an Ansterburg Christmas. Sweet, charming, entertaining, Sleeping Bear Press is to be congratulated for bringing Trinka Hakes Noble's "Apple Tree Christmas" back into print for the Christmas season enjoyment of a whole new generation of young readers.
a piece of my childhood.......2000-10-13
When I was a little girl, my elementary school library carried this book and I constantly checked it out. I loved the beautiful illustrations. This book and the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder greatly shaped my childhood and present outlook on life. Simplicity.
Apple Tree Christmas a beautiful tale for all seasons.......2000-02-25
In Apple Tree Christmas, Trinka Hakes Noble gives us a glimpse into her own childhood, although the setting is a Midwestern farm in 1881. Katrina is a budding artist, whose favorite "studio" is the old apple tree. Here she gets her best ideas and dreams of the future. After a blizzard/ice storm, the apple tree is no longer standing. Katrina can't believe that Father and Mother are happy to use its old branches for firewood. Nothing seems right anymore, and even Christmas doesn't feel happy. But Christmas morning brings a surprise for our young artist. Mrs. Noble's illustrations are lovely, filled with much detail of life before the turn of the century -- life without all of our modern conveniences. Be sure to add this book to your collection!
Book Description
On a small, dusty farm in Mexico, in the Valle de Guadalupe, a young boy named Pablo lived with his mother, father, and two little sisters, Isabella and Teresa…
Christmas means family: everyone gathered together in joyful celebration. But what if one beloved member is missing? That’s the situation so movingly explored in this exceptional—and stunningly illustrated—holiday tale, set in the Mexican countryside.
Because Mama is going to have a new baby, Pablo’s father has gone off to America to earn extra money. That makes Pablo the man of the house—chasing coyotes away from the hens, comforting his worried mother and sisters, and trying to make presents for everyone.
Now Christmas is near—when Papa has promised to return. Will he be home for the holidays? Children will hang on to every word eagerly and sympathetically…right until the satisfying, and happy, ending.

Interesting.......2007-01-10
The kids to whom I gave this book found it interesting. Keeping in mind that this book is for children 5 - 8, the parents found it interesting as well.
They liked the plot. It gave them an idea of what Christmas is like in another part of the world the way that "The Children's Film Festival" used to do on TV during the 1960s. They also liked narrative because the kids really enjoy reading it aloud.
Heartwarming.......2006-11-09
Pablo's Christmas is a wonderful addition to multicultural Christmas stories. As a Spanish teacher, I am always searching for stories that will convey to students what life is like for others in the world. Pablo's Christmas tells a touching tale of family sacrifice, bravery, and strength. The lovely illustrations enhance the story by showing life in a small Mexican village. I will enjoy reading this story to my students every year.
