5 out of 5 stars ADORABLE.......2007-04-05

When we read Coco All Year Round to my 9 month old, he goes APE. The pictures are so colorful and chock full of imagery and the text is short, sweet and, as usual for Tanen, clever. Coco covers everything from stepping in poop to vegetarianism. We love it at our house.

5 out of 5 stars Coco charms again.......2006-10-09

Small children and the adults who read to them must both delight in Coco. This chic avian ingenue engages both wide-eyed pre-schoolers and their sophisticated elders. Who could resist Coco in her Halloween frog costume?

Here's another total charmer from Tanen. I read "Coco All Year Round" to my 10-month old son and he seemed to really enjoy the pictures. And I love the clever captions and quirky characters. I'm a big fan of Tanen's chicken books and highly recommend this newest one (and all the others) for the young and the young-at-heart.

Book Description

This is the delightful and often humorous story of an around-the-world bicycle trip taken by two young people, Barbara and Larry Savage.

It took them two years and 25 countries. Along the way, these neophyte cyclists encountered warm-hearted strangers, bicycle-hating drivers, rock-throwing Egyptians, over-protective Thai policemen, and great personal joys.

They returned to a new life in Santa Barbara, one Barbara never lived to savor. She was killed in a street accident, Barbara and her bicycle vs. a truck. We are lucky to have this memoir, throughout which her vitality, warmth and compassion glow.

Slightly edited for radio presentation.

5 out of 5 stars Miles From NoWhere by Barbara Savage.......2007-10-09

This book is really interesting. I learned things that I never had any idea about on the different parts of the world. The stories are told in a humorous way and I laughed alot and have told other people about the book and I am sure there will be alot of them buying it. To me it is amazing what they did by taking that trip in the 70's when the bikes were alot heavier and they didn't have the equipment available to them that we have now... they were seriously very brave and really in great shape to do what they did. I really enjoyed the book and hated for it to end.Miles from Nowhere: A Round the World Bicycle Adventure

4 out of 5 stars A Lot of Ground to Cover.......2007-09-05

I give "Miles From Nowhere" four stars rather than five only because during the course of such a long and trying bicycle adventure, Barbara Savage and her husband, Larry, must have experienced depths of emotion that Savage simply did not explore in the book. She covered some high points and some low points, but I never came to feel that I knew them or fully understood their motivations. Also absent, for a book more than twenty years old (and now considered a classic of adventure travel), was any updated or epilogue information about their lives after their ride. We know that Barbara Savage was tragically (astoundingly, ironically) killed on her bicycle within the few years of their return, but adventures of this magnitude do not end just with a return airplane ticket. The adventure, you see, is not about bicycling around the world, but rather, about Barbara and Larry Savage themselves.

That said, the two covered so much ground during their two-year ride that going into great detail would probably have swollen the book beyond any reasonable marketability. So my criticisms must be taken only as what more could have been learned, not what Savage actually included in the travelogue. I cannot agree with the reviewer who felt that the Savages were self centered and did not include an appropriate amount of cultural interpretation in the text. It seems to me that their cultural descriptions were quite vivid--some of the extremes of what they experienced actually made me cringe. As a solo adventure traveler myself, I am now rethinking some of my travel destinations, and although I consider myself to be pretty tough on the road, I do not believe that I could endure much of what Barbara and Larry Savage endured. These were two rugged people who handled themselves very well, and their story was a pleasure to read.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, inspiring read.......2007-09-04

I loved this book. It's an easy read, and exceptionally inspirational as Barbara Savage recounts she and her husband's journey on bikes around the world in the late '70s. Barbara's writing style is great and at times even laugh-out-loud hilarious as you read about some of the outrageous and surprising circumstances she and Larry find themselves in. This book has also made the impossible seem possible...who knows maybe someday I'll bike around the world!...

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-05-29

This book was a treat to read. They were so courageous to do what they did and it was so fun to live vicariously through their experiences. I highly recommend reading it. I checked it out from the library, but I am going to buy a copy now to keep in my stash at home to read again in the future and to lend to friends.

Knowing about the tragic ending to Barbara's life gave parts of the book an ominous feeling, like when they mentioned the possiblity of biking through Latin America one day. And I can't help but wonder what Larry is up to now, like if he did any more lengthy bicycle tours. Just curious.

5 out of 5 stars I read it again for the 3rd time.......2007-01-10

I have just completed my 3rd reading, spread over 7 years, of Miles from Nowhere. I laughed as loudly as I did the first time and still found it hard to put it down. The book is my special reminder of how to live your life and chase your dreams. I feel ashamed that I have not yet started on my world bike tour but this summer (2007) looks like it will be the year. I often feel indebted to Barbara and Larry for their book and for their willingness to share such a wonderful experience. The book is a must read for anyone with a sense of adventure and a sense of humor.

Book Description

Poring over a map one day, Ewan McGregor—film star and bike nut—noticed it was possible to ride all the way around the world, with just one short hop across the Bering Strait. So he called Charley Boorman, his best friend, fellow actor, and bike nut. From London to New York, Ewan and Charley rode their BMWs through Europe, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia, across the Pacific to Alaska, then down through Canada and America. Exhaustion, injury, and accidents tested their strength, as did treacherous roads and weather. They were pursued by paparazzi in Kazakhstan, courted by men with guns in the Ukraine, and served bulls' testicles for supper by Mongolian nomads. Yet despite the many obstacles, they managed to ride over 20,000 miles in four months. As they traveled, they documented their trip, taking photos and writing diaries.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome !.......2006-12-15

What an awesome book, recording an awesome experience. As a biker myself, I was attracted to the book just to read about a trip that is beyond my means and abilities, but the book ended up meaning much more than that to me. It showed me, yet again, that wherever you go in the world (And I've travelled a fair bit of it myself in my work as a seafarer !) people everywhere are just people like you and I, when you get past the religious, political and economic differences that can so often divide us. It also highlights the fact that people who make a living in the film industry are not necessarily unapproachable, self centred and addicted to adulation. They can be warm, human and prone to the same joys, fears and desires as the rest of us. In short, they are human beings who just happen to have a good job. This is not just a good read about a motor bike trip of a lifetime, it is a book that rekindles hope that the world, and its varied people, is a beautiful place after all, and not half as dangerous as some would have us believe. Whether you're a biker, an armchair traveller or just someone looking for an exciting and inspiring read, then this book is for you. I can't praise it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars A vicarious adventure.......2006-11-11

Long Way Round chronicles the around-the-world motorcycle adventure of Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor. It's unlikely I'll ever do anything like that in my life, but the book gave me an idea of what it's like. Both of them are entertaining writers and it was a really inspiring book. A great tale of taking an adventure and making it a dream come true; of friendship; and of overcoming obstacles. A great companion to the dvd set.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2006-05-26

I couldn't wait to get this book. It sounded like a great story of adventure across several continents. After the first chapter I deeply regreted my purchase. What had great potential turned out to be two guys boasting about their popularity and how it was going to be difficult being celebrities. Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't know them at all, despite their numerous references to the movies they've been in. I thought I was getting a book about the challenges of travel abroad and pictures of these places. What I got was a book with too many pictures of the authors, weak stories of the places they stayed in and the food they ate.

1 out of 5 stars A joke: Rich boys followed around the world by BCC.......2006-05-20

This adventure pales beside the great round the world books on motorcyle like One Man Caravan by Robert Edison Fulton or Jupiter's Travels by Ted Simon. There is little sense of real adventure with this banal travel chronology. A major support team follows closely on the tails of these guys who over packed, offer little insight to local cultures, and the worse challenge they face is eating food that they don't normally eat. Surely, the BCC could afford to have the book ghost written for them to improve the interest.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful story, beautiful photos.......2006-04-13

This is the illustrated version of the amazing story of two friends traveling around the world together. It is a demonstration of the will of individuals to make it to their goal. More importantly it is also an illustration of the generosity, the kindness, the sadness, the humor and the beauty they found along the way. You don't have to be interested in motorcycles, you don't even have to care who Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman are! Its just a great tale of two people and an adventure.

As wonderful as it is to read the story, you must also get the dvd. It is as close as most of us will ever get to these amazing locations, and you couldn't ask for better guides!

Book Description

The 1951 regular season was as good as over. The Brooklyn Dodgers led the New York Giants by three runs with just three outs to go in their third and final playoff game. And not once in major league baseball’s 278 preceding playoff and World Series games had a team overcome a three-run deficit in the ninth inning. But New York rallied, and at 3:58 p.m. on October 3, 1951, Bobby Thomson hit a home run off Ralph Branca. The Giants won the pennant.

The Echoing Green follows the reverberations of that one moment–the Shot Heard Round the World–from the West Wing of the White House to the Sing Sing death house to the Polo Grounds clubhouse, where a home run forever turned hitter and pitcher into hero and goat.

It was also in that centerfield block of concrete that, after the home run, a Giant coach tucked away a Wollensak telescope. The spyglass would remain undiscovered until 2001, when, in the jubilee of that home run, Joshua Prager laid bare on the front page of the Wall Street Journal a Giant secret: from July 20, 1951, through the very day of that legendary game, the orange and black stole the finger signals of opposing catchers.

The Echoing Green places that revelation at the heart of a larger story, re-creating in extravagant detail the 1951 pennant race and illuminating as never before the impact of both a moment and a long-guarded secret on the lives of Bobby Thomson and Ralph Branca.

A wonderfully evocative portrait of the great American pastime, The Echoing Green is baseball history, social history and biography–irresistible reading from any angle.

3 out of 5 stars Echoing Green, The Bobby Thomson Story.......2007-09-01

While I was but a teenager, and an avid NY Giant fan, at the time of the historic homerun, the story told by Mr. Prager was of extreme interest to me. My "low rating" can only be attributed to the rather "annoying" writing style of Mr. Prager. My brother, whom I bought the book for, and who is a Ph.d of significant intellectual capacity, said the style was "old yiddish", and, while OK now and then, Mr. Prager overdid it...to the point of being annoying. Mr. Prager also has some of his descriptions of the historic ballgame a bit mixed up. For instance, he refers, (on page 198, last paragraph) to "..Dark popped out to Robinson to lead off the bottom of the fourth and the count went to 2-2 on Pafko..." Problem with this is: Pafko was a Dodger; Dark a Giant!! How could Pafko follow Dark when they were on opposite teams. Mr. Prager makes similar mistakes in other areas of the book. All in all I enjoyed the book, as did my brother, except for tying to navigate around Mr. Prage's screwy sentence structure.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read For Baseball Fans.......2007-08-08

If you consider yourself a serious baseball fan, The Echoing Green is an absolute, 100%, must-read. You can't possibly miss out on the meticulous and incredible information Joshua Prager has uncovered about baseball's greatest homerun, and quite possibly, greatest story.

The book is loaded with incredible facts, characters, quotes, and insights into a story that did not just start and end with the 51' National League Pennant, but has continued to live on for over 50 years.

I could not put this book down. I would recommend it to anyone, even non-baseball fans, as not only an incredible story about two men and a homerun, but about a city and a country and its people. This is great non-fiction with a story so implausible that it reads like a fictional tragedy. Prager has left no stone unturned in his pursuit to tell it.

I can't recommend this book enough.

5 out of 5 stars A Great, Well-Written Story.......2007-07-31

As a loyal baseball fan I'm quite familiar with Bobby Thomsom and his "shot heard round the world" in the 1951 playoff with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Knowing some of the facts surrounding that big home run and feeling like you've actually just relived it are two completely different things. Having read Johsua Prager's The Echoing Green I feel like I not only sat in the stands that October afternoon, but I've also become close acquaintances with Thomson and the Dodger on the mound that day, Ralph Branca.

I'm truly amazed at the level of detail Prager provides in this book. He meticulously describes Thomson and Branca's pro careers and how they crossed paths many times before that fateful day. Of course, the big story behind this one is the spying and sign-stealing work done by the Giants from their clubhouse perch in center field. If you've heard anything about this part of the story you won't be surprised by what you read in Prager's book; but what you will read is first-hand accounts from many of the Giants on the roster that year, including Thomson himself.

How can an almost 500-page book about one swing of the bat be so entertaining and interesting? Well, first of all, there's really only about 350 pages of reading material here. That's not to say the remaining 150 pages are worthless; they're mostly reference material and notes to support all the facts presented throughout the book. Those sections are tucked away in back and there if you need them.

Prager is clearly a gifted and engaging writer. He almost makes you feel like you could take a deep breath and smell the concessions stands from almost 60 years ago. He also does a fantastic job describing the ups and downs of Branca and how he managed to keep his cool (for the most part) over the years, despite the rumblings of Giant cheaters.

Hmmm...Giant cheaters...now that I'm a fan of Prager, I wonder if he'd consider writing another well-researched book on the subject of our modern day Giant cheater...

5 out of 5 stars A can't-put-down read from the start.......2007-06-28

"The Echoing Green" is both great sports book and amazing social history.

Joshua Harris Prager first revealed in print the New York Giants' scheme to steal signs during the 1951 season. He updates that 2001 Wall Street Journal article, and then some. His attention to detail and stoytelling make the book a can't-put-down read from start to finish. He captures vividly the effect on many people of that scheme, that campaign and Bobby Thomson's pennant-clinching homer off the Brooklyn Dodgers' Ralph Branca.

Prager's strong reporting skills are obvious as he shares the feelings of sports, political and religious and average people who followed that 1951 season. Even better, he also takes you deep into the souls of both Thomson and Branca. You truly feel you are in their shoes as they have coped with the effect of that one moment for more than 50 years.

Prager's storytelling style is lyrical, at times almost archaic to current readers' eyes, and certainly not what you'd expect from a newspaper reporter. It's as if Chaucer learned modern English and then got into the Polo Grounds press box. But it works. Prager refrains from smothering this great story with his value judgements. So near the end, when he recounts his breaking the sign-stealing story, it's totally appropriate.

Only one thing about "The Echoing Green" bugged me. Prager passes on the official attendance figure for the Giants-Dodgers clincher as 34,320. But the photographs in his own book show a Polo Grounds packed to standing-room only level as Thomson swung the bat. (Its capacity was more than 55-thousand.)

Whatever the figure was, more people can say "they were there" through Prager's first-class book...the best in my collection. So get ready to learn much more about "The Shot Heard 'Round the World" than you ever knew. Thanks to Prager, the trip is worth it, every step of the way.

5 out of 5 stars Take Me Out to the Ballgame Again - Please!.......2007-05-09

As soon as I finished reading Echoing Green, I had to write to tell the author how much I enjoyed it. I wasn't even five when "the shot" happened, and my Dad was fighting in Korea, so I don't have any personal memories of it. But still, as a kid growing up in the late 50's & earlier 60's, many of the names that were mentioned were heroes of mine. And although Bobby Thomson never was (probably because I eventually ended up becoming a Dodgers fan), I still loved the book and didn't want it to end. Probably, it will only appeal to a sports fan, and maybe only even to an older baseball fan at that. But even so, it's one of the best sports books I've ever read.

Book Description

This diligently documented book shows that neither the internment of ethnic Japanese--not to mention ethnic Germans and Italians--nor the relocation and evacuation of Japanese Americans from the West Coast were the result of war hysteria or race prejudice as historians have taught us.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Refuted by Ken Burns' "The War".......2007-10-07

Ken Burns' PBS production, "The War", absolutely refutes this garbage. Malkin is repugnant and ridiculous. I know Japanese Americans whose families experienced this violation of the Constitution (such as "due process"). No, I did not buy this diatribe and nonsense; I read portions of it at the bookstore because good, reasonable and intelligent people should not patronize seriously flawed authors, such as Malkin, Ann Coulter, David Horowitz et al with their hatred and outrageous invectives. One should NOT ever pay attention to her opinion. She has lost all credibility.

1 out of 5 stars Bigotry Sells.......2007-10-07

Michelle Malkin conducted absolutely no scholarly research in the writing of this ridiculous book. She argued that Japan controlled the entire Pacific Ocean, maintained a vast network of spies in the US, and planned to invade the West Coast. Through subterfuge and falsification of information, she thus concluded that internment camps were not morally reprehensible because they were of military necessity and because, in her mind, racism did not exist during the 1940s.

Fortunately, Eric Muller, a law professor at UNC -- Chapel Hill, revealed that Malkin's arguments were entirely unsubstantiated and willfully falsified. As historian Greg Robinson observed, "there were no reports of sabotage or espionage" following Pearl Harbor or before Japanese-Americans were unlawfully imprisoned. Allied forces maintained a Germany-first strategy because they considered Japan to be a lesser threat, in part because it did not have absolute control of the Pacific Ocean. Moreover, internment camps were established in June 1942, after the Battle of Midway, in which Japan's defeat greatly diminished its threat to the US mainland.

Despite the great deal of criticism she received, Malkin refused to budge from her position that MAGIC cables established the military necessity of internment camps. She underscored how important MAGIC was to her argument by dedicating her book to David Lowman, whose "research" on MAGIC she borrowed extensively from. However, James C. McNaughton, Command Historian of the US Army, Pacific, declared that Lowman's work on MAGIC to be of no merit and dismissed Lowman's "polemics ... as symptomatic of the lingering bitterness stemming from Pearl Harbor and the emotions raised by apologies and compensation."

Even the Historians' Committee for Fairness proved that Malkin's book represented "a blatant violation of professional standards of objectivity" -- "decades of scholarly research, including works by the official historian of the US Army" have contradicted every one of her intellectually dishonest claims. Following a report by the US government Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians, President Reagan authorized that compensation be paid because the denial of civil rights to Japanese-Americans had been "motivated by racism" instead of veritable military concerns. As the noted biographer Jean Edward Smith pointed out, during their internment, Japanese-Americans lost more than $400 million from 1942 to 1945, a sum when adjusted for inflation equated to almost $5 billion. These financial losses were never fully or adequately recouped.

Lastly, it should be noted that the segregated Japanese-American 100th Battalion/442nd Regimental Combat Team became the most highly decorated unit for its size and length of service in the history of the US Army. When the European Theatre finally ended, the 100th/442nd had received 7 Presidential Unit Citations, and its members were awarded numerous decorations for valor and competence, including 21 Medals of Honor, 52 Distinguished Service Crosses, 560 Silver Stars, 4,000 Bronze Stars, and 9,486 Purple Hearts. Their sacrifice was astounding because they suffered a casualty rate of 314 percent, which meant, on average, every man was injured more than three times.

5 out of 5 stars About time!.......2007-08-29

Take an unpopular (conservative) stance on this issue and you are sure to be villified! In the context of the times, our government's response to the unprovoked sneak attack of Pearl Harbor and the invasion of the Phillipines was absolutely correct. The Japanese government refuses to this day to acknowledge many of the unspeakable atrocities that were committed by its soldiers during the war. The tentacles of its spy rings reached far and deep into this country. Good job Michelle!

5 out of 5 stars To Protect a Nation.......2007-08-06

Meticulously researched, well-organized, logically presented. In order to protect a nation the measures taken must be sufficient to address the threat. Mistakes will be made. Nothing is perfect. If the mistakes occur on the side of protecting too much, the nation stands a chance of survival. If the mistakes are made on the side of not protecting enough the nation will perish. There is no such thing as "just the right amount." (When you have bacterial pneumonia and the doctor prescribes an antibiotic, do you want him to prescribe the minimum strength or the maximum? Book Description

The vast wooden disk known as King Arthur's Round Table has hung on the wall of the great Hall of Winchester Castle for six hundred years. But what is it? Was it ever a table? When was it made? Why is it hanging on the wall? When was it painted with the famous image it now bears? And why at Winchester? In 1976 the Round Table was taken down from the wall and thoroughly examined by a team of historians and scientists assembled by Martin Biddle, and its history began to emerge. Built in the reign of Edward I, it was probably the centrepiece of a feast held at Winchester after a forgotten tournament celebrating marriage plans for the king's children; Edward III, founder of the Order of the Garter, had the top hung up in the castle hall as a symbol of his interest in the chivalric idea of the company of Arthur's Round Table; Henry VIII had it painted and used the figure of Arthur to support his claim to be arbiter of European power. This most enigmatic of objects at last yields up these and other secrets to scientific analysis and historical deduction. MARTIN BIDDLE is Astor Senior Research Fellow at Hertford College and Professor of Medieval Archaeology in the University of Oxford. Contributors: JOHN V. Book Description

It started as a daydream. Poring over a map of the world at home one quiet Saturday afternoon, Ewan McGregor -- acclaimed actor and self-confessed bike nut -- noticed that it was possible to ride all the way round the world, with just one short hop across the Bering Strait from Russia to Alaska. It was a revelation he couldn't get out of his head. So he picked up the phone and called his fellow actor-slash-biker friend Charley Boorman and told him it was time to hit the road....

    Long Way Round

Beginning in London, Ewan and Charley chased their shadows through Europe, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Russia; across the Pacific to Alaska; then down through Canada all the way to New York. Long Way Round is the result of their four-month, 20,000-mile joyride. Featuring original diary entries, travel maps, mileage charts, and dozens of photographs, this is a freewheeling, fully charged, and uproariously entertaining book about two world-famous individuals who chose the road not taken...and made the journey worthwhile.

"It started as a daydream. Poring over a map of the world at home one quiet Saturday afternoon, Ewan McGregor - actor and self-confessed bike nut - noticed that it was possible to ride all the way round the world, with just one short hop across the Bering Strait from Russia to Alaska. It was a revelation he couldn't get out of his head. So he picked up the phone and called Charley Boorman, his best friend, fellow actor and bike enthusiast. 'Charley,' he said. 'I think you ought to come over for dinner...' From London to New York, Ewan and Charley chased their shadows through Europe, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia, across the Pacific to Alaska, then down through Canada and America. But as the miles slipped beneath the tyres of their big BMWs, their troubles started. Exhaustion, injury and accidents tested their strength. Treacherous roads, unpredictable weather and turbulent politics challenged their stamina. They were chased by paparazzi in Kazakhstan, courted by men with very large guns in the Ukraine, hassled by the police, and given bulls' testicles for supper by Mongolian nomads. And yet despite all these obstacles they managed to ride over 20,000 miles in four months, changing their lives forever in the process. As they travelled they documented their trip, taking photographs, and writing diaries by the campfire. Long Way Round is the result of their adventures - a fascinating, frank and highly entertaining travel book about two friends riding round the world together and, against all the odds, realising their dream. Good account of the trip. Photos and diagrams are very important features, it could however have more of both.

1 out of 5 stars Long Way Round: Chasing our egos..........2007-10-03

As a guy who wakes up everyday, goes to work, comes home with more work and less time for his own children, I was really looking forward to some genuine escape, some interesting descriptions, epiphanies, maybe even insights into life on a bike traveling around the world. What I got was a couple of "priveleged blokes" to borrow a previous reviewers description, who really do nothing but whine about missing their families, complain about being uneasy in a crowd, and who really say nothing about the geography or culture they encounter.
I would give my eye-teeth for a new 1200GS Adventure, with a "full-kit," I settled on a book about it and doubt I'll even finish it - these guys bore me to death...

4 out of 5 stars Very good companion piece..........2007-09-04

I loved the show when I saw it on Bravo, but thought, "More than this has to have happened on a 4 month trip!"

    And so it did.

I'm particularly fond of the first person voice from BOTH men. Ewan seemed on the show to be just a little to consciously charming, while Charlie seemed to be something of a cry-baby--which I'm sure was a bit of a conscious choice on the part of the editors of the show.

The book gives a much fuller picture of the situations they encountered, and proves a much more rounded picture of both these fellows. And because I read the book before I watched the DVD's of the show again, it even made the shows more enjoyable.

All in all, I hope they do another book for their ride 'Down!'

    4 out of 5 stars Decent.......2007-06-19

This book was pretty good. I enjoyed it because it was about a motorcycle trip around the world. However, beause Ewan and Charlie are so privileged it was dificult to care about some of their problems. For, instance it was hard to sympathize for them when they were having difficulties getting someone to pay for the trip for them. Then after they get a movie deal to pay for the trip, they complain about how the movie production cramps their style. It really seems like they wanted their cake and wanted to eat it too. They could have just maned up and paid for it themselves, then they wouldn't have any problems of the support crew cramping their style. Similarly, when they had to cross a border, they had someone else take care of all the problems for them and were able to sit back and rest.

I did enjoy reading about some of the remote parts of the world and how they had to overcome some of the obstacles on their own. I think this book is worth reading, but I would reccomend getting it from the library.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2007-02-12

An excellent tale about a long motorcycle trip. Must read for bikers and those who wish they were. If you ever wanted to take a long trip off the beaten path, this book will either push in the right direction, or keep you on the sofa.

With humor, style, and succinct, admirable precision, Heller summarizes everything most people will ever need to know about this particular area of grammarA treasure. --Kirkus Reviews Its lush, exuberant, full-color artwork will grab kids' attention, even if they're sitting at the back of the classroom. --Booklist Her subject, made interesting by a rhyming text and brilliantly colored picture, will appeal to everyone. -- Horn Book Q&A - Ruth Heller - A Paperstar Profile How did you become interested in writing books for children? I loved reading to my own children, and when they started school, I became the P.T.A. library chairman. I was the one who got to pick and choose and spend a nice fat budget for the elementary school library. I feel as though I've been surrounded by children's books for years. I suppose this and my strong art background are what prompted my trying to write. What is the biggest influence in your style of writing, and how has it changed since you first began? Hillaire Belloc, Gilbert and Sullivan, Edward Lear--I grew up reading all of them. I love their rhythm, and I loved reading Dr. Seuss to my children. No question, these were my influences. I think I've become wordier, not quite as minimal and succinct as I used to be. What made you decide to write a series on the parts of speech? Take a peek at the back end paper of the hardcover edition of A Cache of Jewels. You'll see that I committed myself, in print, to writing a book for each part of speech. Here I am, ten years later, thankfully completing the very last book in this series. It will be published in 1998. Do you begin with the words or pictures when you are developing a book? How does the second part come together? The first step is to decide what I am going to say on each page. Then I can begin to visualize my illustrations. The words dictate what the illustration will be, but that still gives me many options. Sometimes the two come together easily, sometimes not. If not, I pursue new research material until something clicks. Did you learn anything new about the parts of speech while writing these books? I learned many things I had forgotten, and some new information and rules that I had never known. I also learned that the textbooks that I used for research were difficult to understand and somewhat boring, and that I am guilty of frequent misuse of the English language. How do you choose the images in your book? An art teacher once told me to fall in love with whatever I was drawing. So I choose images that I love: candy, ice cream, butterflies, sea creatures, carousels, jewels, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Fun way to review nouns........2005-10-09

This book is a fun and interesting way to introduce or review nouns of all types. The rhyming text and fun illustrations make this book fun to read aloud.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful way to learn parts of speech.......2005-09-17

Ruth Heller's books are fantastic. I love this book as well as the others in the series. My daughter has autism spectrum disorder and is a visual learner. The combination of vibrant illustrations and amusing rhymes makes learning the parts of speech much easier (and lots more fun) than reading rules from a boring textbook. Read, learn, enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Good Information, but a Tad Tedious.......2004-01-16

I ordered this book along with Brian Cleary's "A Mink, a Fink, a Skating Rink" and found the two to be quite different in both content and style. I thought a review might help someone else choosing between the two.

I don't know who assigned the reading level as is currently is shown, but to say this book is for ages 4 through 8 is misleading. This may be accurate if only reading ability is being considered, but where content is concerned I think it is more than the average four or five year-old needs or wants to know. As I pre-read this book, even my eyes started to glaze over. It is a LOT of information for a short book. Including abstract nouns and concrete nouns in addition to the common, proper, and compound nouns is probably okay for the younger kids and great for the older ones. But how to make different types of nouns plural giving examples of when to add "es", how to handle a "y", changing an "f" or "fe" to "v", and words that end in "o" (which gave three examples, one for adding "s", one for "es", and then one for doing it either way) seemed like more of a spelling lesson to me, and could quickly turn to information overload.

If you are looking for something to add the learning of nouns at a more in-depth level and for the higher end of this age bracket, this could be a nice compliment. But for the younger kids of four, five, and six, I would recommend opting for "A Mink, a Fink, a Skating Rink". It keeps it much simpler, and the illustration and text are funner, even a little silly.

4 out of 5 stars Homeschool mom in Michigan.......2000-03-03

I truly enjoyed reading this book to my kids. The rhythm and rhyming was enjoyable as was the silliness added to the pages.

I learned from the book and feel that having the series as part of our school room would be to our advantage.

I just happened to find these and so happy they are Great! Beautiful illustrations that the kids love, and learn from as well, in a format that keeps them interested. Even helped me remember things that I'd forgotten over time.

It's never too early to learn about cooking or other cultures. In Passport on a Plate, children can do both at the same time. This wonderful collection of more than 100 recipes takes kids around the world without ever leaving the kitchen, and results in great food they're more likely to eat because they've made it themselves. Start in Africa with African Fruit Salad, Black-eyed Pea Balls, or Kenyan Crunchy Bananas. Move on to the Caribbean with Callaloo Soup, Curried Coconut Vegetable, and Island Fruit Smoothies, or venture all the way to Russia for Chicken Kiev, Apple-Cinnamon Baba, and Strawberries Romanoff. Each recipe is carefully rated from one to four "utensils" for level of difficulty and the amount of adult supervision required. In addition to the recipes, each section begins with a short cultural lesson about the highlighted country or region and the kinds of food found there. Passport on a Plate is an ideal cookbook for children and parents to learn from together.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and great for families!.......2006-10-03

I Loved this book. The layout and content was exciting and fun, and I really wanted to make many of these recipes. The countries/areas/continents covered are as follows: Africa, Caribbean, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Middle East, Russia, and Vietnam. The recipes vary in complexity with a guide for parents on how difficult and dangerous they were, and how much help kids might require. While some of the recipes were not exactly authentic (fortune cookies, after all, are neither Chinese, nor are they consumed there at all), but most were different enough to get a curious palette interested, but not so foreign as to alienate the slightly pickier eater.

Each region gets its own mini-table of contents, separating the dishes by course (appetizers, salads, soups; main courses; desserts...) Each region also opens with a section about the cultures, tastes, available food resources, etc.; the writing therein is fun and simple, and I thoroughly enjoyed each aspect of this recipe book. I highly recommend this one.

    Book Description

The focus of this book is the tank battles fought during the opening phase of the war in North Africa. What really happened during the engagements? How were the tanks fought? What were their strengths and weaknesses? Not simplified generalities, but substantive, basic facts gleaned from searching for details in the surviving original records. The accounts of each battle are excerpted from the original reports written by the participants directly after each engagement. To understand the basis for the outcome of the battles, it is necessary to possess a basic understanding of the capabilities of each type of tank, its opponents, and how they were tactically employed. The first five chapters in this volume provide descriptions and technical attributes of the British, German, and Italian tanks and anti-tank guns along with the tactical doctrine from the period. Chapters six through eleven contain the details of the tank battles fought in North Africa during the period from February 1941 to June 1941. Translated excerpts from the Deutsches Afrikakorps war diary are used as a backdrop to provide a chronological guide as events progressed. An interesting feature from this war diary was the brief daily weather report revealing how hot it was and when sand storms occurred. Details on the actions in the tank battles are taken from after-action-accounts written directly after the engagements, enhanced by excerpts from war diaries of the armoured units involved to fill in the preliminary moves, buildup of strength, combat losses, and details on the actions that weren't contained in the after-action-reports. This book is compiled from the results of digging through original records for over thirty years in an attempt to find data that would aid in assessing and understanding the tank battles that took place in North Africa. Tom Jentz is also the author of Panzertruppen 1933-1942, and Panzertruppen 1943-1945 (both titles are available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.)., over 100 b/w photographs, 30 line drawings, 8 1/2" x 11"

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful study........2007-01-12

This book is a wonderful study about the battl in North Africa in the first 6 month of 1941. You must have it at home!

    4 out of 5 stars Italians revenge.......2003-01-18

As all the Jents books, also this one is dedicated to the Panzertruppen and his day by day analysis of the single fighting is an inestimable fount for the ones really interested in understand the peculiar problems of the tank combat in the desert and, more general, on flat lands.
The author introduce the reader with the complete list of the italian, british and german tanks operating on the theatre and reporting not only the tanks datas but also the ones of the guns and the kills capabilities of all them explaining why the italian army, supported by no more than 100 german tanks was able to keep the entire british army at bay for three years.
Inside this book you'll find tactics notes, use of formation and how not to use the radio in combat, how to plain a tactical operation and how to plain a complete failure overstimating the enemy and completely forgotting the Von Moeltke lessons about the uncertain nature of the battlefield and the strange enemy use to have its own plans...
If you are interested about the tank warfare and the desert one, you must have this book

5 out of 5 stars A Gold Mine for Wargamers.......2002-08-30

This is precisely the sort of work which wargamers long for, but never find. It is exhaustively researched and clearly presented, and chock-full of detail on equipment and tactics. If you are interested in Advanced Squad Leader, Advanced Tobruk, Panzer Grenadier Afrika Korps, or similar simulations, you will be delighted with this. It's also filled with clear, excellent photographs, maps, and charts.

5 out of 5 stars Everything to do with early N.Africa Tank battles.......2002-03-10

This book is made of very high quality paper and hardcover. It is very easy and entertaining to read. It covers the early battle actions from February 1941-June 1941. The book has all the data on the tanks (even to the steel specifications of each armour plate), all the guns penetration and accuracy data tables & gunners aim diagrams for how the Germans should fire at Matilda tanks!) Jentz uses original sources for all his information not others work.
There are many official after action reports included as to the effectiveness of the tanks both in reliability and fighting performance. Also the official recommended tactics for battle are given.
Most battles are covered with tactical movements and a map showing them, also battle reports and at the end a summary of the tactics each side used and what conclusions can be made.
The B/W plates are of very clear reproduction and show many details not normally visible like the extra armour plates added to early Pz4D. The Matilda is definately the "star" of this book but there is still a full appeciation of the Italian tanks and guns.
This book covers next to everything those interested in early North Africa Tank battles & tanks could want to know. Like the other reviewer I am eagerly waiting the next 2? books in this series!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Necessity for any Military Enthusiast.......2001-07-29

This work is an absolute necessity for anyone interested in the North African campaign. It is not a story or an account of battles, rather, it is a technical manual regarding the forces involved in the campaign. Mr. Jentz is meticulous in his research of the primary historical documents and does an excellent job of organizing this mass of material. Of greatest interest to me personally is the tactical treatment of the battles. While I possess numerous works on this campaign, I have never seen such analyses published until now. Additionally, the author conducts an in-depth analysis of the equipment utilized by the Germans, British, and Italians. As a result, he produces an objective account of the effectiveness of the tanks, artillery, and other weapons utilized in North Africa. The author also includes excellent orders-of-battle of the various units.

Of course, no work is ever perfect. If I had to mention some negatives of the book, I would point out that the maps should be colorized. While useful, these would have been improved with color renditions of the various forces, instead of the black-and-white that is used in the book. Trying to discern the dynamics of the battle was made more difficult since all of the arrows were in black ink.

In sum, this book is an excellent addition to any military library. It covers areas previously untouched and makes a valuable contribution to the field. I highly recommend this work and eagerly await the next two promised volumes that will comprise the whole of the North African campaign.
