Book Description
In Fannie Flagg’s high-spirited first novel, we meet Daisy Fay Harper in the spring of 1952, where she’s “not doing much except sitting around waiting for the sixth grade.” When she leaves Shell Beach, Mississippi, in September 1959, she is packed up and ready for the Miss America Pageant, vowing “I won’t come back until I’m somebody.” But in our hearts she already is.
Sassy and irreverent from the get-go, Daisy Fay takes us on a rollicking journey through her formative years on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. There, at The End of the Road of the South, the family malt shop freezer holds unspeakable things, society maven Mrs. Dot hosts Junior Debutante meetings and shares inspired thoughts for the week (such as “sincerity is as valuable as radium”), and Daisy Fay’s Daddy hatches a quick-cash scheme that involves resurrecting his daughter from the dead in a carefully orchestrated miracle. Along the way, Daisy Fay does a lot of growing up, emerging as one of the most hilarious, appealing, and prized characters in modern fiction.

A perfect book.......2007-09-08
I just recently discovered Fannie Flagg and have been reading any book by this wonderful author that I can find. This is a warm, funny and wonderful novel about a young girl growing up in a very interesting enviroment. It had just enough mystery to keep me turning the pages (I love a good mystery) but was a good book to read before bed--some of those terror mysteries make it a little too hard to turn off the light.
I really enjoyed this novel--it is staying in my bookcase for a second read.
Fun Read.......2007-07-09
This book is interesting and full of fun. I laughed a lot reading this book.
Fannie Flagg and the Miracle Man.......2007-06-08
This book is one of my favorites. I adore the way Fannie Flagg greets you and warmly invites you right into the family. It's like a whole different world where you feel so welcome and so familiar. This particular book has wonderful sentiment and a charming sense of humor that only Fannie Flagg could create.
What a story .......2007-03-11
I love Daisy Fay. She made me laugh, she made me cry and then I was done with the book. I have to tell you this book was referred to me by a true southern lady named Melba and I will be forever indebted to her. When I finished the book I felt as though my best friend left and I was never to see her again. I will read Daisy Fay again and again. Fannie Flagg is now one of my favorite authors and I will look forward to all her future book. KEEP THEM COMING FANNIE. I AM A TRUE FAN!
Great read!.......2007-01-31
I loved this book! I've read it twice already. Fannie makes you feel like you are right in the middle of whats going on in the little town. It's one of those books you can't put down. Fannie Flag is a great writer and this book is one of her best!

Her name is May "Mayday" Parker, and she recently learned her father was the original Spider-Man. The good news is that she's having the time of her life as she hones the amazing spider-like abilities she inherited from him. The bad news is that some of her roughest, toughest battles lie ahead - against the likes of Ladyhawk, the Kingpin of Crime, Mr. Nobody, Crazy Eight...and her own parents?! Collects SPIDER-GIRL #6-11.
Customer Reviews:
Good (not great) comic.......2005-08-10
This is another perfectly enjoyable installment in the life of May "Mayday" Parker, the stunning Spider-Girl. If you've liked the prior volumes, you'll dig this one, too. Well paced story, fun art. Terrible paper they print these on, though. Maybe the cheaper paper stock keeps the price down. Definitely recommended for the younger set, so enjoy this one with your kids.
Spider-man grows up.......2005-02-02
Spider-man's mantra has always been about accepting responsibility, and what greater responibility is there than that of a parent--especially when you've passed on your unbelievable superpowers!
Spider-girl is full of great adventure, a lot of great baddies, and a lot of clean, super-charged fun, but at it's core it is a comic book based on the relationship between a father and his daughter, and it is told with a lot of love and truth. I definitely recommend it for long time Spider-man fans as this "alternate-reality" is more in tune with the characters than other "real" stories, and for teen and preteen girls who are jealous that their brother's get to read all the exciting books. You won't be dissapointed.
Not Spiderman, but Good Twist.......2004-12-29
Spiderman as a father? And his offspring is a daughter? Can a father be more protective? An interesting twist on the popular Spiderman comic books and now movies, Spider-Girl is a logical sequel for the next generation crowd. Like Spiderman, she has all the powers, and like Spiderman, she has all his problems, too - including his old enemies. Maybe this may get more girls to read comics, graphic novels, or books about strong superheroines, but maybe it may cause diehard Spiderman fans who want to see Spiderman forever youthful without a child to cringe. Nevertheless, with few really good superheroines out there besides Wonder Woman, Buffy, Queen B Superheroine, or Elektra, Spiderman's daughter may just catch on.

Book Description
Growing up on Philadelphia’s gritty streets, Jermaine Banks was used to fighting, but life has now thrown him some unexpected hooks and jabs. Almost thirty years old, with a three-year-old son who worships the ground he walks on, a pregnant girlfriend whose family hates every breath he takes, and a slain best friend whose death racks him with guilt, Jermaine realizes it’s time to change. But can he step up to the challenge, or will he continue to be a trouble man?
Customer Reviews:
I couldn't put the book down.......2005-06-01
Once I read the first chapter I was hooked. This story had a lot of real life issues and once I read the first few pages I had to see what was going to happen next. Jermaine was a good bad boy who saw the need to change and found a way to do just that. He made some good decisions and also found a way to forgive those who wronged him in the past. This book just made my heart swim with emotion and I can not wait until Travis Hunter writes his next story.
Positive African American Story.......2005-01-07
I really enjoyed looking into the lives and struggles of the hood and also of african american men. Jermaine is a dude that has never worked and always hustled to make ends meet. He has a son of his own and decides that he doesn't want to let his son down and be the type of father he had. Jermaine's father Calvin was never in his life besides sending money. So Jermaine was left for the streets to raise him. Everyone has to deal with the decisions they make in life. Mr. Hunter displays that alot. People having to deal with their life's decisions in the end rather good or bad. But this is a powerful story the tells stories on so many levels other than what I have written here. Read it, you won't be disappointed.
And a trouble man he was.......2004-10-19
This book was another piece adding to my collection. I like this book alot it was truly worthed my time. Jermaine was indeed a trouble man from the little things as a rat down to the most serious things as his life. This book will keep you turning turning turning
GREAT BOOK WITH A POSITIVE MESSAGE!!!.......2004-10-10
The heroine in this novel is a young African-American man named Jermaine. Jermaine lives in the inner city, and comes from a single-parent household. Having never known his father, he tries to be the best parent that he can be to his young son Khalil. But the lure of the streets, his other parent, is tough to ignore...can he do the right thing and be the role model to his son that he needs to be? In a nearby Philadelphia suburb (but worlds away from his son's North Philadelphia neighborhood socioeconomically,) Calvin Sharpe has just announced to his wife of 30 years that he is leaving her. The thrill is gone, and his white mistress is waiting in the wings. Calvin dropped out of his son's life years ago because of Jermaine's difficult mother, and hasn't missed a beat. But you know what they say about a woman scorned; and Robin, Calvin's wife, refuses to be deserted. She's going to tell, and tell it all.....for she knows all about young Jermaine that her husband abandoned. Soon the whole family knows of Jermaine's existence, and they can't wait to meet him. Meanwhile, Calvin's idyllic life seems to be collapsing like a house of cards....but is it too late for him to make things right with his oldest son?
A quick read, this was a positive, uplifting book about the power of the Black man...when he allows himself to be empowered. I enjoyed this novel so much, I will be actively looking for additional work from Mr. Hunter.....

Awesome book!!! A must read!!!.......2004-09-27
This book is simply fantastic!!! I could not put this book down, and Travis Hunter was actually able to make it in such a way that you could have compassion for Jermaine Banks despite the choices he made in his life.
Jermaine Banks is a 29 year old drug dealer. Jerome is a father to a son he loves with all his heart, and has a child on the way with his girlfriend Erin. Erin who wants him to leave the drug life behind. Add into that equation his girlfriends over protective family who does not like Jermaine. Jermaine finds out some news that will change his world. He finds out he has a father he did not know he had, but he also finds out he has a brother. Calvin is a man who has a successful business, but turns out his business dealings are not as legit as they seem. The book focuses on Jermaine making positive choices in his life so he can change his life for the better. He wants to gain custody of his son from his baby's mother, and he wants to do his best to get to know the family (minus his father) that he did not realize he had. We watch as he struggles with his emotions. He wants to do get a job, but will he be able to find one that will pay him enough to support himself and his son. He wants to move out of his neighborhood to avoid the temptation. He wants to be the type of father to his son, that his own father was not to him. He realizes after a good friend of his is gunned down that he has to leave the life.
In this book you will find yourself really feeling for the characters. You feel the inner turmoil of Louis Sharpe (grandfather to Jermaine, and Father to Calvin). You know he wonders if he truly raised his son right, if Calvin could do all that he has done.
Calvin Sharpe, so focused on making money, he could care less about the people in his life, and the pain he brings to his family. Calvin hopes he can right the wrongs in his life before it's too late.
C. J. has the life Jermaine is envious of. The material things like the big house, the maid, everything that money could buy. What he really wanted is his father's love, guidance, and attention.
Mr. Hunter put a subtle, yet poignant message in the book. The message in the story is dealing with the consequences of your actions. It's a book about life in the hood, without it being all thugged out, and that's why I enjoyed it so much. What I also found very fascinating is both Jermain and Calvin were both hustler's in their own way. Jermaine was a street hustler, and Calvin was a corporate hustler. Different lifestyles, but not so different.
The plot twists in this book make this a page turner for sure. I think anyone who reads this novel will really enjoy it. I know I did!!

Book Description
Bestselling author Travis Hunter returns with a stunning new novel about family, success, and just how far a man will go to protect those he loves.
Dallas Dupree is a one woman man. A handsome and successful teacher, he is both worshipped and envied in his Atlanta neighborhood and chooses to live and raise his daughter, Aja, in the ghetto where he grew up rather than desert his roots. The only problem is that the one woman for him—his beloved Yasmin—passed away giving birth to his daughter. Now Dallas struggles through a string of empty relationships, unable to commit his heart because no woman can measure up to Yasmin. However, when Dallas plays with the wrong woman, he finds the consequences may cost him much more than he can afford.
Dallas’s sister Carmen has issues of her own. All of her life she has struggled with a weight problem that had caused a lack of self esteem. Now she is an affluent doctor who lives in the suburbs with her handsome new husband, Sterling. When a family crisis forces her to take in her wayward niece, she realizes that the picture perfect world she worked so hard to create is an illusion.
Their older brother, Priest, is pretty secretive about how he makes his money—and he does make a lot of it. He has been a father figure to both Dallas and Carmen, but now that they are all grown up, they want nothing to do with their shady older brother. But when Dallas and Carmen are in trouble, they turn to the one person who has always been there for them—and learn there is more to Priest than meets the eye.
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended.......2007-01-21
This is one of Travis' best...This one held me captivated from beginning to end. I love the way Travis works in the characters of his earlier novels. He keeps the drama flowing with realistic tales that we can all relate to.
A page turner....that you won't be able to let go of........2005-12-07
Travis Hunter's "A One Woman Man" book is a page-turner. Once you start reading you won't want to put it down. It is so good that when you read it you feel as if you are a part of the story watching everything that goes on. It deals with some of the most important issues today. Fatherhood, love, scandal, memories, and revenge are some of the topics just to name a few. I applaud Travis Hunter on this book because its a book I can relate to all to well. I give this novel 5 stars, it is one of the best novels I've read in months
Enjoyed It.......2005-09-03
First I have to admit that I hated the cover of this book fo sho! I almost didn't buy it because of it but I'm glad I did. So I guess it's true that you really shouldn't judge a book by its cover. I appreciate stories about black men who are trying to do the right thing and that was what Dallas Dupree was in A ONE WOMAN MAN. Not necessarily an all together brother, but he was all man and he took care of his daughter and didn't mistreat the ladies. I enjoyed reading Dallas' story, but as minor as her character was compared to that of her brother's, my favorite character was probably Carmen, Dallas' sister. She reminded me very much of my sister-in-law. The way the author molded Priest, Dallas' brother, was genius. I was completely surprised by him and the ending of the book. Overall I give this one 4.5 stars.
Okay read to fend off boredom.......2005-08-08
I did not enjoy this book as much as previous works from this author. The title didn't really seem to fit the actual content of the book and the ending was abrupt and quirky. In the end there seemed to be no real lesson or meaning to it all; so this is the kind of book that you read to fend off boredom or on a long airplane ride to keep you occupied
Stupendous!.......2005-07-27
Rarely do I give 5 stars, but Travis Hunter has done it again by bringing us another novel that's fully engaging. I love novels with a twist and this one has plenty of them! I couldn't put it down and finished in one day (as I did his previous novel). Dallas, was the epitome of a strong black man who overcame early obstacles in life. And everyone should have a friend like Baldhead. All of the characters were very well developed, and the comedic tone here and there was just the right touch. Great ending which showed that things aren't always as they seem. I see A One Woman Man on the bestseller lists for many years to come.

One of my favorites.......2001-12-05
I loved this book and have read it 3-4 times, and gone through 2 copies. Too bad he never wrote anything else.
Wow... he's that cute and he can write too???.......2001-02-22
Having read just about everything KS Haddock has published, or nearly published, perhaps my take on this book is a little different that most. I loved it, though not as much as his unpublished works, Middleman and Thanatics. It discusses philosophy without being boring, and a road trip without being trite. It's a dark look not only at the shallow SoCal world, but relationships, family and the strange bonds that twist through drug riddled lives. Hmm... Sounds familiar. Be sure to check out the scene where Riley shaves Clover. If that doesn't get you going, nothing will. It is uniquely true to life, and if it's not true to your life, you are too boring to be reading it anyway. Anyway, this guy is hot, both intellectually and otherwise. I predict major stardom. BTW, he DOES play a mean guitar.
all good things recieve extreme reactions........2000-05-23
I found this book to be one the best books that I have ever read. I like the fact that it created such extreme reactions from others. Alot of the truly artist things in this world are either loved or hated. This book was so fastenating. I have passed it on to the few freinds that I have who could appriciate it and they all agreed with me. The characters, as crazy as they were, became vividly real to me. I am a rather critical person, and if this book's biggest error is the fact that bongs are lit with a zippo, then I supose that the book comes out a grade higher then everything else that I have taken the time to read.
Wow ..........1999-07-23
... was this awful. And don't believe the hype; he can't play guitar very well, either.
Bad, bad, bad.......1999-05-13
Wow, this book was bad! Don't look for any actual Nietzsche philosophy -- you get the feeling that the author skimmed the Cliff notes. Total pseudo-intellectual lameness.
His road trip is...get this...boring! Read about him drinking or doing drugs. Read about him watching TV. Read about him alone in his car or hotel. I didn't like that the author intentionally made the main character stupid just so we could watch him blunder through his life. Don't be fooled thinking this is drug/drink book. It's not moody or experiential like Burroughs or Bukowski...more like a pharmaceutical laundry list. Should have been a five page short story.
Is this my generation of writers? Perhaps it's best if we just nuke ourselves.

Book Description
Father and Son focuses on the age-old struggle between the generations within the context of modern industrialization and the battle for democratic freedoms in Korea. In this novel, Chu-châol, a successful poet-publisher, is tormented by his sonâs antigovernment activities and lack of filial respect, by the cynical questioning of a cousin-turned-government agent, and, not least, by his own guilty conscience. Through Chu-châol and his extended family, the author explores the role of the intellectual in modern Korean society and the changing face of the Korean family as tradition gives way to economic growth and social upheaval.

Some men are born fathers, while others have fatherhood thrust upon them. The protagonist of John O'Farrell's The Best a Man Can Get belongs indisputably in the latter category. When his first daughter is born, Michael Adams imagines her as the warden of a prison that will permanently deprive him of his youth and freedom. Terrified by his new responsibilities, he regularly escapes to a bachelor pad across the Thames, pretending to be at work. Another child arrives--and with still another on the way, it is only a matter of time before Michael's wife discovers his double life. At that point, he must make a choice between his family and his hedonistic haven.
By turns hilarious and touching, O'Farrell's book delves deeply into the anxieties of modern parenting. Yet the novel is not without empathy for the 21st-century father. After all, it's easy to imagine the lure of a child-proof hideaway, insulated from sleepless nights and dirty diapers. At the same time, Adams often wonders whether "just being tucked up warm and cosy" is really "the best a man can get." With its charming prose and truant protagonist, this first novel is sure to win over even the most reluctant parent. --Greg Bensinger
Book Description
The Best a Man Can Get by John O’Farrell is a hilarious and touching debut novel in the seriocomic Nick Hornby tradition that demonstrates why marriage, fatherhood, and maturity don’t always arrive on a synchronized schedule.
Michael Adams is a composer of advertising jingles who shares a flat with three other men in their late twenties. Days are spent lying in bed, playing computer and musical trivia games, and occasionally doing a spot of work. And then, when he feels like it, he crosses the river and goes back to his unsuspecting wife and children.
For Michael is living a double life. He escapes from the exhausting misery of babies by telling his wife he has to pull an all-nighter at work or travel away on business. And while she is valiantly coping on her own, he is just a few miles away in his male paradise, doing all the stupid, pointless, gloriously enjoyable stuff that most men with small children can only dream about. He thinks he can lead this double life indefinitely, until the inevitable slip exposes him and threatens to blow his marriage to kingdom come.
The Best a Man Can Get is a darkly comic confessional that peers deeply (and amusingly) into the soul of the contemporary male, divided between the pull of family and the dream of escape. Graced by a flawless eye for detail and impeccable timing, it offers a generous allotment of both belly laughs and shocks of recognition for men and women alike.
John O’Farrell has finally given readers the sparkling and candid novel that fatherhood needs and deserves.
Customer Reviews:
Wicked, outrageous, ruthless, and VERY funny with it .......2007-04-06
Michael Adams is living a double life. Under the pretense of work, while actually doing very little work, he shares a flat with three other men so that he can take time off from his family.
The book plays upon parenthood's less proud moments but, let's face it, haven't all parents wished for some time off at some point?
Although far-fetched, the story works, thanks to O'Farrell's amazing insight and perfectly timed shots of humour.
Michael is not likeable, but many readers be able to identify with him - I could see some of the worst parts of me in him and it's quite liberating to be able to laugh about them. Yes, I was enraged at times, but mainly because he's getting away with it!
The book begs the question "What if I could do it too?" and I don't even want to think about the honest answers to that one!
Not the Best O'Farrell Fiction Novel a Man or Woman Can Get But it is Still Very Good!.......2007-01-08
I actually recently read the second and third fiction novels by O'Farrell before finding this one. They are sensational hilarious reads, especially his masterpiece This is Your Life. I didn't quite think this debut novel reached the really extremely high benchmark those books achieved, but then again I have not had kids yet and if so I think the jokes inside would have been even funnier.
O'Farrell's fiction novels are hilarious looks at life, the main characters have clever one liner thoughts and the reader follows a moral awakening journey through the eyes of the main character. I found this book actually quite interesting when compared to his third novel May Contain Nuts whose main character is the complete opposite ie a woman who is a cotton wool overprotective parent.
In The best a Man Can Get, Michael Adams was content in his relationship with his witty and beautiful wife who suddenly had fatherhood thrust upon him before he was ready. His wife seems to be extremely competent at being a parent while he knows for sure that he is not and he finds the whole situation just a bit hard to bare. So he decides the best solution for all is to pretend he has to work late or that he is on business trips up north when he really is living in a share house pretending to be a single guy on the other side of London.
Like with all O'Farrell novels the outcome is fairly predictable, even the twist in this one you'll work out long before its divulged but the fun, as it always is with O'Farrell's novels, is in getting there. Read them all!

I feel sad that I have discovered John so late in my life. This book will figure among my Top 5 humorous novel lists. John weaves a tale which slips into past and back with great ease and making the reader laugh aloud all the way. It puts on stage what we are - Lazy Parent and Spouse who does more dreaming of sharing a great life with the family but sparse action to back it up. A great and hilarious read. Please avoid any liquid intake while you are reading this book for the fear of it coming through your nose.
A surprisingly hilarious book.......2006-06-01
I didn't know what to expect from this book when I received it from a Bookcrossing meetup. My only exposure to British humor is the outrageous kind, such as Monty Python and Douglas Adams. This one was more down to earth and realistic which sometimes makes the best type of humor.
At times I found myself laughing out loud. The ending was very Hollywood-esque - you know everything comes out right in the end. However, it was still a great, funny book that I recommend highly.
