Thanks from Bubba.......2007-10-03
I adopted a year old dog that had been rescued by a friend from a puppy mill. Bubba was scared of the world, cowering in his crate for the first week. He was afraid of every noise, scared of every person. I bought the book,"Help For Your Fearful Dog", and proceeded to follow the suggestions of Ms. Wilde. It was slow going at first, but as each day and week progressed Bubba began to make astonishing progress. As suggested in the book, we started to school together (Bubba is on his third class)and it has made all the difference in the world. This book and its gameplan for your fearful dog works. Just ask Bubba.
help for shy dogs.......2007-09-17
I found this book very helpfull. It is technical yet easy to read, and I love the end of chapter summaries. I have already started my timid rescue dog on a plan based on this book.
Great Book For Owners of Fearful Dogs.......2007-06-24
This is one of my favorite dog behavior books in the last 5 years. As a dog trainer and behavior consultant, I have been recommending this book to my clients as a complement to their training programs. They love it! They are so glad to have a resource that they can share with family members and friends to help everyone better understand their dog. Nicole Wilde does an excellent job of presenting information in a way that is easy for the average dog owner to understand, but still keeps it interesting for the professional dog trainer.
I give it 5 stars and 4 Paws up!
I Love "Help for Your Fearful Dog"!.......2007-05-28
As a professional dog trainer and behavior consultant I have to say this is a "must have" on every professional's bookshelf as well as many dogowner's. As have many of Nicole's books in the past, this one lived up to its name. Not only is it helpful but it is written in "plain English" and with a lot of humor to boot! I now make a habit of consulting the wonderful bullet-point summary at the end of each chapter before I finish my behavior treatment plans just to make sure I haven't forgotten another great suggestion that my clients will want to try out!
I also like how Nicole delves into complementary therapies such as TTouch, aromatherapy, Flower Essences and more.
This book is well worth the price!

Caused me to share this book with others.......2007-05-10
I am not much of a reader, so the fact this book is a simple read worked well for me. I not only agree the author rushed through this story, but also agree he made his point. Do I desire to know more about each character and how everyday decisions came into play? Yes. With that said, however, I finished the book with a confirmation of what we as Christians already know. We are to live our lives as closely to the way Jesus did. It is not easy and much may be lost, but nothing is lost that is of importance in the Kingdom of Heaven. Mr. Sheldon got his point across and I pray my friends and I make a conserted effort to ask ourselves that very question each day.
FAVORITE BOOK.......2007-02-01
This is the second time I'm reading this book because it's just that good.
What Would Jesus Do... Really..........2006-08-23
This book was first written as a series of unusual sermons that was a continued story, one chapter to be given out each week about what happened in the lives of various persons with different backgrounds and vocations, but all applied WWJD to every decision they made. Charles Sheldon was the author, and he was the pastor of Central Congregational Church in Topeka, Kansas, and this series began in June 1896.
One of the amazing things about this book is that despite it being written over 100 years ago, the story still applies to this very day. As you read it, you will find not so much that you travel back to 1896, but it feels like it was written for today. What would Jesus do if He were you?
This book challenges the reader to consider the question "What Would Jesus Do?" in every decision in life. It tells of different persons who after taking an oath to do that began to bear their cross as a Christian, but at the same time experience the Spirit's work in their lives and through their lives. Though it is a story written by Sheldon, it could very well have been a real life story as well.
Challenging Story.......2005-12-10
This is the book that started the whole WWJD craze of the late 1990's. After asking "What would Jesus do?" before every decision, the members of Henry Maxwell's church realized how far from true Christian living they were, which called for major changes in their lifestyles. Today, the WWJD movement is strongly criticized by some Church people, often citing reasons similar to the opponents of the movement depicted in the novel itself. Hmm...sounds like the novel had some prophetic quality.
I highly recommend this book in its original form. There's no need in butchering the story as is done by the modern retelling that was more recently published.
Total letdown.......2005-11-27
I was very hesitant to write this review, particularly given the fact that "In His Steps" seems universally loved. But I felt it was important to warn others about Sheldon's lack of depth as an author.
Let me first preface my review by saying I have been reading a lot of C.S. Lewis lately. Going from Lewis to "In His Steps" is like transferring from MIT to kindergarten. I say this with no disrespect intended. And while some people may find this book helpful and inspiring, I simply found it prosaic and shallow. In my estimation, Sheldon's characters are either completely stupid or he is a shallow thinker, in either case the book holds no appeal for me.
The crux of my problem is this: the characters are one-dimensional. We have no insight into their internal or subconscious struggles. The weight of their decision to follow Jesus' example is undermined by the lack of attention paid to the emotional and mental conflict that accompanies any attempt to do so. There is more struggle going on within a Christian than Sheldon remotely implies. (Bunyan emphasizes this perfectly in "Pilgrim's Progrss" which I highly recommend.) The transformation of the characters when they commit to their decision is also contrived. It was as if all sin vanished in Sheldon's idyllic world when once a Christian really committed himself to following Christ. Given St. Paul's treatment of his own struggle with sin in Romans, I find Sheldon's romanticized ideal a little hard to swallow.
The question is a good one for all Christians, what would Jesus do. And from that standpoint, Sheldon really tries to flesh out the implications of such a question in our daily lives. Unfortunately however, in my amateur opinion, his efforts fall short of the objective and leave the reader with an uncomfortable sense that only a fraction of the story has been told.
Here's my advice. If you like C.S. Lewis, that type of depth and psychological insight, then don't bother with "In His Steps" because you will be disappointed. If however, you find Lewis a little confusing and amibiguous, you might enjoy the book. In the end I think it depends upon how familiar you are with the innerworkings of the human psyche or how familiar you wish to become. Hope this helps.

Wonderful for any marriage.......2005-07-28
This book is used in the Family Dynamic's "Dynamic Marriage" course. We've been through the course 3 times. The first time, we were newlyweds and learned a lot about each other. The second time, we'd been married a little while and worked through some issues we needed help in. The third time, we had a great marriage, and we made it even better. It's a wonderful book and an excellent course. I'd recommend it to anyone. The course and the book together have been an indispensable tool in our marriage.
Helps you to fall in love again.......2000-03-31
This book contains worksheets that go along with two other books, "Love Busters" & "His Needs, Her Needs." These worksheets help you and your spouse identify for each other the things that kill your love and the things that help your love to grow. They help make you an expert in what will make your spouse fall in love and stay in love with you. The worksheets also help you identify and avoid the things you may unknowingly be doing to ruin and destroy your spouses love for you. There's also a neat worksheet on recreational companionship that helps you and your spouse decide on activities that you would enjoy doing together. This book is highly practical because it is an immediately effective way to figure out what's wrong in your marriage and it gives you solutions to those problems.

In this definitive and groundbreaking biography, acclaimed author Susan Cheever offers a remarkably human portrait of a man whose life and work both influenced and saved the lives of millions of people. Drawing from personal letters, diaries, AA archives, interviews -- and Cheever's own experiences with alcoholism -- My Name Is Bill is the first fully documented, deeply felt account of Bill Wilson and Alcoholics Anonymous.

Not much new here..........2007-09-12
While Susan Cheever makes a valiant effort to use imagery and some carefully styled first person musings of Emily and Bill Wilson, her efforts fall somewaht flat. On the balance, this is essentially a retelling of "Pass It On." There are a few details at the end regarding Bill W.'s sexual compulsions that are common AA lore, and have appeared elsewhere.
For those interested in the history of AA, this won't offer much in the way of insight into the early days of AA and how the program worked. Entertaining at points, but difficult to read attenteively if you have already read other accounts of Bill Wilson's life.
Cheever's artistic touches didn't do much for me. I would rather she had put additional effort into her research, and brought a fresh telling with some new facts or insights.
A completist must have. For the rest...optional.
So what?.......2007-08-25
I just finished reading this biography. I am so grateful for Bill and Bob and for me - they are a constant reminder that there is a Higher Power looking out for us.
So what if Bill was less than perfect? Yeah, I was a little surprised at some of the content of the book - but again I ask so what? Bill always said that Dr. Bob was the more "spiritual" of the two of them. He never claimed to be the saint that so many people in program seem to need to make him in order to ?????
Bill was an ordinary man with ordinary human issues - and he did his best with what he had. I believe that Bill would be amazed at the sainthood that seems to have been given to him since his death.
Personally, it makes me feel safe to know that throughout all of Bill's experiences he managed to keep sober AND to share this so important message. This book clearly tells us that while Bill was at times struggling with his demons, he cared about other people (drunks) anyway.
So, he had affairs? Who am I to judge? Step 4 - asks me to make a fearless inventory of MY affairs - not of other people's -
Reading this well researched and written book only makes me appreciate Bill and Bob MORE - wow! they were actual ordinary guys who gave the world the most magical of gifts and for that I am grateful.
One of the worst books.......2007-04-29
I read this book and I was disappointed beyond words. If you really want a great book about Bill W. I Suggest the book by Rober Thomsen, who
knew Bill Wilson personally (The title is Bill W.)
Nailing Genius.......2007-03-10
Two decades ago, I took up with a recovering alcoholic, and in a show of support, I attended several open Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. After a while, I had to confess that I found them really hokey. "That's because you are not an alcoholic," he replied. "If you were, you'd recognize the genius of the mind that created it. It's brilliant."
For the last two days, I've carried Susan Cheever's book about Bill Wilson around with me, reading, I must admit, compulsively. Cheever, whose father John's important fiction covers the period in which AA grew up, brings a literary eye to the development of a character familiar in American public life: the charismatic leader. If it's not perfect in every factual detail, it is rich in content about our society, addictive substances, and our own craving for a savior.
As in the lives of most alcoholics, there's a lot of pain. Surviving divorce in New England when it was rare, abandoned by a mother who remained nevertheless demanding, losing a sweetheart whose family had adopted him as their own--Cheever describes these events in Bill's early life in a sympathic but unsentimental way. She's less successful in blending the history of Vermont from colonial times to the present, but even with awkward flashbacks and forwards, this secondary narrative tells us a lot about the world that informed Bill's character. He was politically conservative, but doggedly independent; someone who with little tutoring found within himself both musical and engineering talents. He attended his family's Congregational church but failed to find the spiritual sustenance that he needed. His admission to a prestigious boarding school coincided with an impressive spurt in physical and mental growth, but he dropped out when felled by depression after his girlfriend died.
By the time he takes up drink, we are prepared for a daunting ride. To anyone familiar with the genre of drunkalogues, it's predictable, but Cheever keeps the story moving by putting Bill's various binges in personal and historical context. By the time he gets to his Akron meeting with Dr. Bob Smith, AA's co-founder, all the elements are in place. It's perhaps unfair that Bill W.'s story gets more attention than Bob S.'s, but, steady and conventional (once sober) are less compelling than mercurial and brilliantly insightful. If the latter gifts are more impressive, so are Bill W's weaknesses--his inability to give up the tobacco that eventually kills him, the depressions that leave him weeping publically, and the perpetual womanizing. Amazingly, he works out the Twelve Traditions that guide the organization while clinically depressed. The more successful he and AA become, the more he craves anonymity.
Especially if you're unfamiliar with the practices of AA, it's instructive to see how they developed from the experiences of these two men and their cohorts. I was surprised that Bill W. had a powerful (although perhaps drug-induced) conversion but that he remained determined not to define God for anyone else. If he lacked impulse control in some areas of his life, he exercised it in others where most popular leaders fail. Cheever is even-handed about Bill's long marriage to the former Lois Burnham, whose life's work supported him and helped establish Al-Anon for families of alcoholics. While some might write the two off as codependent, Cheever brings sympathy to this long alliance. Perhaps someone will write a book about the women of AA, but, as Cheever notes, it was born in a man's world, and many people thought only men could become alcoholics.
Finally, Cheever's book makes clear that Bill W. knew that AA was not the final solution for alcoholism. He saw a psychiatrist. He experimented with LSD and Vitamin B--the first in hopes of finding a shortcut to conversion and the latter as an fixative for chemical dependency. He missed the days when he could attend meetings himself without being recognized.
Ultimately, dying of emphysema, he desperately wanted a drink. I found myself thinking: Why not? But his caretakers refused him, perhaps thinking of the millions who would follow. He was still a drunk, but he was their drunk.

Didn't Meet Expectations.......2006-09-25
I have to say that I was a bit disappointed in this one. For a book that is geared towards the beginner, there was surprisingly little information about actually getting started, with the main focus being on exercises and demonstrations. Speaking as a novice, if this had been the only book I had purchased, I would have been totally lost.
I don't want to say that this book is completely useless, however. The basic information about paints, supports, brushes etc. is good, as are the glossary terms. But beyond that, in comparison to other "How To" books that I've purchased, this one just doesn't measure up. To be fair, some of that can be attributed to personal taste. As someone who is interested in abstract art, the lessons (all still life and landscape) simply didn't interest me. Furthermore, almost half of the photos are black-and-white, including some of the demonstration pages. It's a stretch to expect the reader to understand the difference between opaque and transparent painting techniques by looking at rather poor quality black-and-white images. It just didn't work for me. For the novice painter, there are much better books out there.
The Whole 12 Acrylics.......2001-06-29
Professionals tend to use no more than a dozen of the ACRYLIC PAINTING colors. Watercolor paper's slightly rough texture brings out the precisely fluid color of drybrushing a green pepper and the scrubby back-and-forth strokes of scumbling a peach. An Old Master technique monochromes lights and shadows before color glazing a kettle. The trick to painting glass or water is using the same mixtures as the background for patches of light and dark, but with more white for lights and middle tones. These are some of the tips that Wendon Blake shares as he follows artist Rudy De Reyna's demonstration paintings through covering shapes with flat tones, modeling lights and darks, and adding highlights, textures and details. The author also covers special techniques, such as cloth dabbing; correcting by darkening, lightening or repainting; impasto; paper crumpling; scratching; spattering; and sponging. He says good painting means working with cleanly stored supplies; chemically stable colors on acrylic gesso-coated hardboard, chemically pure 100% rag stock watercolor paper, or real artist's canvas; and museum-quality mat boards for taping with glue-coated cloths or homemade drawing paper strips with white water soluble paste. He has covered just about everything needed for going on to Earl Grenville Killeen's THE NORTH LIGHT BOOK OF ACRYLIC PAINTING TECHNIQUES, Barclay Sheaks' THE ACRYLICS BOOK, and Rachel Rubin Wolfe's THE ACRYLIC PAINTER'S BOOK OF STYLES AND TECHNIQUES.

Amazingly accurate.......2007-09-24
So far I have no complains and can only say that this book is one of the best ones, out there on shredding, Malmsteen style. I only wish there were more songs.
Great breakdown of Malmsteen's best.......2006-02-19
The absolute best thing about this book is that the pieces are slowed down a great deal (first played full speed then slowed wwaaaaayyyy down). Yngwie is awsome. I listen to the CD over and over on the way to work. It just amazes me ... the music this guy has composed and the book and cd provide a great combo breakdown. Althought I would like to have seen twenty more songs in this book I am still extremely satisfied and wouldn't hesitate a second to purchase this book. Bye bye back to the woodshed.
CD is a big help for learning the music........2003-11-07
This instruction book includes a very helpful CD for listening in normal and slowed speed. You can play it on your computer or cd player plugged into your amp and practice. The song selection is a really good mixture of Yngwie's best songs. The book does not include tablature for the complete songs, but this is fine if you just want to study and play the "signature" solos and don't want to play the whole song (which is too difficult for beginners). There are no in-depth written instructions within the book so you should be familiar with understanding how to play and read tablature format. However, it is easy to learn! The only information that I wish it had is how to get the "Yngwie" sound through equipment and settings.

Book Description
For more than one hundred years, this classic novel has encouraged Christians to ask themselves "What would Jesus do?" before making any decision, however large or small. Charles M. Sheldon's story of a Midwestern pastor who energizes his own life, his church, and his entire community with that simple question has been a favorite for generations-and now it's available once again in an inexpensive trade paperback edition from Barbour. The book that inspired the "WWJD" movement, In His Steps is perfect for personal reading and reflection, and makes a wonderful graduation gift. At only $4.97, it's also perfect for bulk purchases!

A must read.......2007-06-28
A classic book, though it is fiction it will seriously challenge your priorities in life. The characters make a commitment to do nothing without first asking "What would Jesus do?", forcing them to reexamine their choices and decisions. As you see the self-denial they have to practice, and the results of it, it compels you to follow their example.
I recommend this book to everyone.

Disappointing.......2003-12-18
At first, I was very excited to read this book, and it started out great, but soon I realized that this is not what it claims to be. This is not a story of what happened to several dozen people in a small town who decided to live their lives by following the example of Jesus Christ. This is fictional account of what the author believes might happen to people if they decide to live their lives by following the example of Jesus Christ. For inspiration, I prefer biography.
In His Steps, boy was I in for a suprize..........2001-12-01
To tell you the truth when I found out I had to read this for school, I thought it would (...)... But I read it and here's what I think...(You can hear my opinion, but read this book yourself as well, trust me and be open-minded!!!)
So it goes, a pastor of a church Henry Maxwell is interupted in finishing writing his sermon for Sunday morning tomorrow when the doorbell rings and he has to answer it because his wife is out. Well when he opens the door there is what a appears to be a tramp(A dirty shabby man), asking for work. But Henry is kind and tells him he knows of none. The man leaves and Henry get's back to work. Henry was proud of his sermon, until the next morning at church, after the sermon is over the man(supposed tramp)burst into the church and runs up to the front of the church where the pastor is. He tells them he is no tramp nor drunk. But he is searching for work and everyone has been rude to him and that they could not be real questions, and he really questions them what it is to follow in Jesus steps. Then the man passes out
So starts the amazing revelation of the First Church of Raymond, Henry is so moved by the question, which questions his own discipleship that he asked anyone who is willing to meet him in a room after the service if they are willing to take a pledge to ask the question "What Would Jesus Do?" no matter what the consequences of anything including: Social and financial loss... What good is money and social status after you are dead anyways? around 50 ppl in the first week promise to take the pledge. Which changes the course of life not only in Raymond, but in many other cities to come as well.
It is a little slow the first few pages, but quickly speeds up. The author develops the story through the development of the characters, and is a very nice change from the normal novels most of us read. Plus it has all the ingredients of most novels and so much more. It has murder, deception, and greed, but also contains Godly principals which build the book.
I was not let down, but was amazed at how good the book was, since I expected it to (...)!!! So come in with low expectations and an open-mind and you are sure to enjoy this book and be truely inspired. It is especially for Christains and non-Christains as well. (...)
Doing it God's Way.......2001-08-17
I really enjoy reading in His Steps and What Would Jesus Do? It was interesting to know what people in the past had to do to follow the teaching of Jesus. It is also interesting to see how the people of this era have to say and do to follow Jesus. I think it is harder today than in the past because we have more to tempt us and more outwordly things to distract us from the purpose that Jesus set for us. I think everyone should read this book. I feel it would do a lot of people a lot of good. I know it did for me.
A little disappointing.......1999-01-27
I read the book and tried to follow the reasoning in my personal life. For instance, when trying to decide between two Ralph Lauren polo shirts - one a celedon green and one a melon - I stopped to consider what Jesus would do, and then bought the melon-colored shirt. But when I got home and put it on I looked SO washed out. Jesus had a swarthy Mediterranean complexion which was complemented by shades in the orange family. I, however, am of Norse descent and the melon looked horrible on me.
Even though it doesn't really cover it in the book, I'm convinced that you have to think, WWJWFM? or "What Would Jesus Want For Me." But I guess that's too much for a bracelet or a bumpersticker.
Thanks, anyway.
How to WALK the TALK!!!.......1998-12-29
WWJD? isn't just a fashion statement, it's a way of life. Want to know how you should be living? Want to know how you are supposed to APPLY the Bible to your own life? Read this book. Reading it is easy. Using it as a mirror of yourself is harder. Changing your life and living this WAY, the WAY that Jesus did, the WAY that God wants us all to live, that is REALLY tough. It gets easier as you go, however. Don't just claim the name of Christian, read this and learn to live it! If you can read this and think there is nothing wrong with your life, then you are lying to yourself, but God knows the truth. Try it and see!
