I could not believe how fast the book arrived. It was in great condition and very helpful for my son. I would buy from amazon again and I highly recommend it to others that need books.

5 out of 5 stars Complete study guide.......2007-03-08

This book is very nicely laid out with easy to understand examples, especially in the Math section which is why I bought this book in the first place. Well.. . that and the fact that I'm not even going to think about taking the GED Based on what I can recall from high school. It's a hefty volume to be sure. Easily large enough for a door stop, or if you want to leave a lasting impression with someone, you could slap them in the face with it, and they will remember you for the rest of their lives. (Kidding.) But it is quite large, and needs to be, for there is a lot of study material and plenty of practice questions in each section. I recommend this text to anyone who is attempting to pass the GED test. There is a nice pre-test. . . that after taking it, reminds you of how stupid you were for dropping out in the first place. But really, if you need to brush up or have been away from the classroom setting for a long time, Then get this book.

This book is very comprehensive, and a great way to verify that your high school aged homeschoolers are on track!

5 out of 5 stars SECRETS AND FRIENDS: THE BECHTEL ADVANTAGES!!.......2005-12-17

Laton McCartney has torn the cover off of the Bechtel Group and given us insight into one of the most successful, most influential, and most controversial mega-businesses in the history of the planet earth. A giant octopus with tentacles everywhere imaginable, plunking down projects, and sucking up billions of private and public funds, all over the world. We hear lots about Halliburton and it's foibles, but when was the last time you heard a peep from the Bechtel Group? Bechtel is a "private" corporation with no stockholders and no messy SEC investigations to endure. These guys, as the book tells us, know how to operate out of sight. Even their internal power struggles and disappointments are out of public sight. The book describes Stephen Bechtel, Jr as operating his personal life in a way that would make an experienced undercover spy proud. And then there is "The Grove", the real "friends in high places". There are things in this book you should know, but don't believe everything. A dollop of good sense will guide you through what is on the edge of truth and what isn't. Just be careful not to believe everything.

This is one of the most interesting reads of non-fiction that one will ever make, because it informs us of what has been going on behind our backs, out of reach of the "evening news" or "headline news", Time, or Newsweek, or the New York Times, for that matter. You can thank publishers Simon and Schuster for bringing this to the light of day.

The definitive Halliburton book has not been written yet because so much 'flotsam and jetsam' has yet to be retrieved and examined in the wake of the Iraqi War(s) and disasters like Hurricane Katrina. To be sure, Bechtel was and is involved in both wars AND Katrina, on a parallel track with Halliburton. So knowing Bechtel, gives general strategic insight into Halliburton and vice versa. In addition, when one finishes this book, you must immediately 'google' the word 'Bechtel' to see what they are currently 'up to'. Clues are everywhere on the web, but they are still secretive and still very active, making money 'hand over fist', but not without making their own strategic mistakes. Guess who is responsible for rebuilding the Baghdad electrical grid and water/sewage systems? Well, well! The fact that they have made it through the rough patches attests to their internal strengths as detailed in the book. And yes, there is Reagan, Bush I, George Pratt Schultz, (and probably Bush II involvement, since Riley Bechtel is a presidential advisor on middle eastern trade). Well, well, indeed! The book folds nicely into current events. While Halliburton is getting nothing but grief over Iraq, Bechtel is all but invisible and bullet-proof, just as our author suggests in earlier times.

Some of this is appalling, almost immoral, but it always seems to be quite legal. Like giving a Saudi a 10 percent share in Arabian Bechtel in order to secure the initiation of a project. Sounds like a bribe to me, but it was ruled otherwise and everything proceeded on. Whew! So don't look for Bechtel to be in any courtrooms in the near future. If you 'google' "Bechtel Lawsuit", there is precious little there, since 20 years ago, except for Bechtel suing Bolivia, South America's poorest nation, for $25 Million. Read the book, take some of it with a huge grain of salt, and keep the rest in your storehouse of knowledge. At about 240 pages in a Hardcover, with 30 pages of 'notes' & 'index', it's a brisk, but penetrating read into this corporation, how it operates, and how it affects us all. Ante up! Five PENETRATING Stars!!

5 out of 5 stars Corruption = Bechtel.......2004-04-24

This book shows the public the real Bechtel.
A shadowy Corporation, with slimey leadership from the beginning.
Money is all that matters regardless of international affairs or U.S. patriotism or U.S. policies.
Bechtel has helped out so many of America's enemies.
Bechtel would have built a sarin factory for Saddam if Bechtel thought they could make money and get away with it!

1 out of 5 stars Yellow Journalism at its Worst.......2001-01-19

This book would make even William Randolf Hearst blush. McCartney uses innuendo, falsehood, and fabrication to create a highly skewed view of the well-known engineering construction company. While seemingly a "well-documented" work, he in fact uses "off the record" quotes and otherwise unattributed sources to paint a extremely unflattering picture of the company and its founders, owners and officers. Despite the apparent effort spent in researching his subject, he demonstrates a consistent ignorance of the industry he writes about including its practices and terminology. He casts a wide net of aspersions on the individuals who built the company by quoting unnamed sources and reiterating disproved allegations. He has a positive gift for making any legitimate business activity seem highly suspect, and alludes to "rumored" charges of impropriety without providing any documentation of such. The reader should view this work in the same manner as the depiction of an industry dinner in Washington D.C. recounted in the book's closing pages. The event described did in fact take place, but Mr. McCartney's insertion of Steven Bechtel Jr. into it is a complete fabrication.

4 out of 5 stars Engineered the World : And Made a Lot of Money At It Too........2000-01-18

An excellent book that provides an interesting insider's view into one of the largest engineering and construction firms of modern times. From the Hoover Dam to the Middle East to the United States Government, this book shows how the Bechtel Corporation did what it wanted to, when it wanted to, and used whom it wanted to as long as it made the few controlling members of it's management very rich. And all this was training for the government deals to come. This book offers a historical detailing of this company's ethical and social violations as well as the building of an empire. Read it.

3 out of 5 stars This Book is No Longer Operative.......2007-09-26

Since "Flying High" was published a lot of things at JetBlue have come unstrung, including David Neeleman's hold on the CEO job. The airline's disastrous meltdown at JFK during bad weather in February 2007 demonstrated that its media image wasn't matched by operational prowess -- and proved the validity of a timeless adage in the business world: the qualities needed to conceive and launch a business, which Neeleman has in spades, are not the qualities needed to stabilize and grow a business.

Today JetBlue is retrenching, cautious, slow-growth mode, parking airplanes and struggling to recover from the black eyes it endured in 2007... and Neeleman has been revealed as something less than the Superman this book portrays him as.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2007-01-09

This is a fascinating and encouraging story.

It's encouraging because it seemed that the odds would have been agains Neeleman in becoming a successful CEO...but his persistence, energy, and creativity (as thoroughly described in the book) allow him to prevail. The most important take-away I got out of the book was the importance of recognizing and admitting your weaknesses - and then acting accordingly by surrounding yourself with talented people to fill those gaps.

For managers looking to get some refreshing ideas, this is a worthwhile read.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-10-25

James Wynbrandt has penned a well-researched, colorful account of the life and guiding principles of commercial aviation pioneer David Neeleman. The book is written in a clear, straightforward style, and offers insights into what made discount carrier JetBlue an unlikely success. The book appears, however, to reflect Neeleman's artful capacity for generating positive publicity for himself. While this is not exactly a hagiography, once you have read it, you may well envision a halo floating above Neeleman's portrait on the book's jacket. Then again, as Muhammad Ali once said, "If you can do it, it ain't braggin'." Certainly, Neeleman's accomplishments rocked the commercial aviation industry, encouraging the major carriers to launch value-based alternatives such as Ted and Song. We recommend this book to professionals seeking useful ideas to help their businesses gain altitude.

5 out of 5 stars Attitude Is Altitude.......2004-08-27

This really isn't a biography of David Neeleman (pronounced "Neel-Mun"). Rather, Wyndbrant carefully integrates relevant information from both Neeleman's life and his career to explain JetBlue's success to date. Neeleman would be the first to point out that, in the airline industry (de-regulated since October 28, 1978), it is a fool's errand to predict which airlines today are totally secure and which are doomed. All airlines have problems which vary only in nature and degree. However, JetBlue is probably in better shape than most others are even as Neeleman explains that how it can become better while becoming larger "is the question that we're wrestling with at JetBlue, and I think it's something that we focus on a lot." He adds, "I believe we are going to be able to...have a thriving, prosperous company, that we're setting the standard in what we're doing in customer service, and that we'll continue to grow in the future."

Of special interest to me is what Wyndbrant reveals about the major influences on Neeleman's life and career, notably his membership in the Church of Latter Day Saints, his career successes (e.g. leadership of WestJet and then Morris Air) as well as career failures (e.g. bankruptcy and liquidation of The Hawaii Express and being fired by Southwest Airlines), the impact of having A.D.D., and his efforts to plan, obtain financing for, and then launch JetBlue.

With regard to JetBlue's business model, it clearly indicates what Neeleman learned during his associations with the three airlines (WestJet, Morris, and Southwest Airlines). According to Wyndbrant, as JetBlue was about to be launched at John F. Kennedy International Airport in February of 2000,

"Neeleman promised New Yorkers -- and the world -- a new kind of economy travel aboard planes with wider, all-leather seats, extra leg room, preassigned seats, and more overhead storage space than other carriers delivered. Moreover, all of this would be provided at a price that was up to 65 percent less than the competition. Furthermore, there would be no requirement for staying at destinations over a Saturday night to qualify for the lowest fare, as the major carriers mandated. Even the price of walk-up tickets would be below standard fares many airlines charged for flights of a similar distance. On the ground, JetBlue would offer quick, computerized, touch-screen check-in. Perhaps most notable of all, in the air, passengers would be able to watch 24 channels of live TV displayed on individual monitors mounted in every seatback. JetBlue would be the first airline in the world to make this entertainment amenity available to all its passengers."

This is almost precisely the same business model which enabled JetBlue to attract its senior management team as well as to obtain about $130-million in initial financing. It also explains how JetBlue was able to differentiate itself from various competitors. With all due respect to JetBlue's business plan, leadership, and capital, however, Neeleman insists that JetBlue's crewmembers (NOT "employees" nor even "associates") have established -- and will continue to sustain -- the airline's single most decisive competitive advantage. On this point, he and Southwest Airlines' Herb Kelleher are in total agreement as I shall explain in greater detail later. Wyndbrant devotes substantial attention in this book to how JetBlue recruits, interviews, and evaluates prospective crewmembers. He then explains how they are trained.

There is so much of value in this book which is directly relevant to decision-makers in almost any other organization, regardless of size or nature. Obviously, Neeleman is an uncommonly intelligent, ambitious, talented, principled, and caring CEO. However, the success achieved by JetBlue thus far is the result of teamwork under his leadership. For me, the key point in this book is illustrated by what is certainly not unique to JetBlue: the process by which a visionary can attract and then galvanize so many different but compatible people with comparable skills, decency, and experience to help launch what became a crusade, in this instance (in Neeleman's words) "to bring humanity back to air travel."

Wyndbrant focuses on so many revealing, indeed defining moments in his book. I now conclude this brief commentary with one of them. Kelleher once told Neeleman, "I don't care about my shareholders." Neeleman was shocked. What did he mean? Was Kelleher really serious? "Because I just take care of my employees. I know if I take care of my employees, they'll take care of my customers, and my customers will take care of my shareholders." Long before Neeleman went to work for Southwest Airlines, Kelleher once observed "You can get the same airplane. You can get the same ticket counters.  You can get the same computers. But the hardest thing for a competitor to match is your culture and the spirit of your people and their focus on customer service because that isn't something you can do overnight and it isn't something you can do without a great deal of attention every day in a thousand different ways. That is why I say that our employees are our competitive protection."

What lies ahead for these two uncommonly successful airlines? Since my crystal ball imploded more than 20 years ago, I stopped making predictions. Let's await further developments...and probably not have to wait long.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating look into one of the most admired companies.......2004-08-25

This fast moving, well written book provides a detailed insight into the success of JetBlue and its famed CEO. More than just the operating details of the airline, this book explores its very foundation in the life and personality of JetBlue's CEO. You come away from it thinking of all the ways you can improve your own business, and with a strong appreciation of your customers. Flying High is well written and holds your attention from start to finish. This is definitely a must read.

Book Description

On the mean streets of Jersey City, St. Anthony High School is more than a tiny brick schoolhouse—it is a beacon of hope. Though the school constantly teeters on the brink of bankruptcy, it is held together by Felician nuns devoted to helping students overcome the scourges of poverty by preparing them for college educations and a brighter future. And each year from the student body of just over 200, Coach Bob Hurley forges an elite nationally ranked basketball team through hard work, his coaching genius, and the sheer force of his personality. In thirty-one years as a coach, Hurley has won twenty-two state championships, two USA Today national titles, and has sent all of his players to college except for one (including his son Bobby, one of the greatest players in college basketball history). Award-winning sportswriter Adrian Wojnarowski brings the stories of the St. Anthony 2003-2004 season to vivid life, as Hurley struggles to turn a troubled group of players into state champions and national title contenders again—while keeping the school he loves alive to continue its educational mission at any cost.

If you're a coach this is for you. If you're a sports fan this is for you. I loved it so much I bought a book for my entire coaching staff. And we are a hockey team! There are a lot lessons and values that Coach Hurley teaches. More importantly it's about life. He never let up on these kids and pushed them to success. Challenged them to succeed. At that age level they need guidance, they need someone to sponsor them. Then its up to them to follow the path Coach Hurley gives them. It's amazing how a time tested path still can't lead some kids. It's a struggle between the kids backgrounds and the future they can have
Wow what a great book. What I liked is that these kids are now in college so we can follow their careers.
The one player that sticks out to me is Sean McCready. Great talent, bad guidance (family). Now he is sitting out the 2008 season because he transferred. Coach Hurley was right!

I also loved the fact that he sweeps the floor. That's his time, and we all need our own time. But coach is dedicated to a school that is struggling. There is no way a school like this should be on the verge of bankruptcy. Coach could leave and make millions, but he doesn't. Because if he does the school will close.

5 out of 5 stars The Street Stops at St. Anthony's .......2007-06-05

Adrian Wojnarowski's "The Miracle of St. Anthony: A Season with Coach Bob Hurley and Basketball's Most Improbable Dynasty" is one of the best sports and leadership books I have read this past year.

St. Anthony's is a private Catholic High School in Jersey City, NJ, with 230 students (120 boys). Students come from an area where 16% pass the HS proficiency test and where the local drug-infested, back-sliding culture has a hold on the kids. Despite its size and location, St. Anthony's basketball teams have gone undefeated four times, have won two USA Today national titles, and 24 New Jersey Parochial state championships. The basketball program has developed 200 college players, including 5 who went on to the National Basketball Association.

St. Anthony's is a special and safe place under Srs. Felicia and Alan and legendary Coach, Bob Hurley - the streets stop here. Their focus in athletics and academics has been to help kids get to the finish line. They share a collective value that there is no shortcut to success.

While Sister Felicia and Sister Alan play prominent roles in the success of St. Anthony's, "The Miracle of St. Anthony" is mostly about Bob Hurley and the class of 2004 - the most athletically and socially underachieving team in St. Anthony's history. Yet, under Hurley's coaching leadership, the team went undefeated, winning the NJ State Championship and was named by USA Today as the top high school team of the year.

Hurley struggles with the problems of the inner city and sees the potential in these kids that they do not see in themselves. He has always been a disciple of John Wooden... fundamentals, well-conditioned, team play, and defense...and he has always been a no-nonsense driver.

He creates an expectation of performance and accountability that the kids will not find anywhere else in their lives, and helps them out the door to life with values and a voice to become the best they can. And despite his daunting ways, the kids respect Hurley and when returning after graduation, they always come home to the warm embrace of family. The relationship changes from tough task master to a friend.

"St. Anthony's" covers the entire basketball year from pre-season preparations to the championship game. Wojnarowski provides the ups and downs of the season - injuries, players leaving the team, tough wins, and all the key relationships that makes St. Anthony's the special place it is.

This is a great read for anyone interested in coaching, leadership, and basketball.

5 out of 5 stars Above and Beyond.......2007-04-12

Even those who aren't fans of basketball will enjoy this story of a coach who works hard to help kids make the most of themselves and their skills.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book.......2007-01-12

My husband is a basketball coach and an avid reader. He described this book as one of the best books he has ever read. Purchased it on Amazon.com for a great price and it arrived quickly in new excellent condition. I would recomment it.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration for whatever you do.......2006-11-06

I'm not a big basketball fan. I didn't know Bob Hurley. I wasn't familiar with St Anthony. And I've spent little time in and around Jersey City. But after receiving a recommendation from a friend that this book was worth the read, I could not put it down.

This is a compelling tale of someone who cares enough to go way above and beyond what most of us are willing to do to give back to an important cause. Many Dads coach basketball just long enough to get their kids lots of playing time. Bob Hurley has done the same long past his "own" kids worked through his system. He has dedicated his life to helping kids get the most from themselves despite all the odds. He happens to use the basketball court as his classroom and the game as an analogy for life.

Most of us even casual fans have heard of Bobby Hurley, one of two sons of the books hero, and a Duke basketball legend. What wasn't known was that Bobby received his training at the court of his Dad. He, together with a host of high school players, have all learned life lessons as well as the skills required to be great players from the master.

I couldn't help feeling guilty that Bob, who could have gone virtually anywhere to coach, gave it all up to dedicate his life to giving back to those less privileged than most of us. Adrian Wojnarowski, the books talented author, has given us the opportunity to learn more about this dedicated individual and perhaps get us all thinking about how we all might give a little more back to life. And I almost forgot, it also provides a gripping story of an undefeated high school basketball season.

4 out of 5 stars Fresh take on messianic prophesy.......2006-12-06

Multiple artists (including Andrew Peterson) collaborate on this ambitious second volume in the series. This CD focuses on mostly prophetic/poetic texts about the Messiah. The arrangements are fresh and innovative. The lyrics are true to the scriptures they are based on. From a stylistic standpoint, I probably prefer Songs From The Voice, Vol. 1: Please Don't Make Us Sing This Song , but I also highly recommend this second volume to a fascinating project.

5 out of 5 stars Story telling at it's best.......2006-12-04

I enjoy this CD because of the musical quality and message. The songs stay in my head and thus penetrate the brain.

Book Description

On the night of January 31, 1998, the fishing vessel La Conte took on water and sank off the coast of Sitka, Alaska, in what was to be the worst storm in the states history. Abandoning ship, the five-man crew desperately clung to lifeand each otherin ferocious 90-foot seas, and freezing water. All would surely have perished were it not for the efforts of the oast Guard Search and Rescue teams who flew their choppers into the heart of the storm with little hope of rescuing anyone. Knocked nearly senseless by 100-mile-per-hour winds that exploded out of stadium-sized wave troughs and nearly stripped them from the sky, the rescue teams were plunged into a meteorological hell as they made three separate attempts. The third and last cew completed the rescue without radio communication, all the while maneuvering in a gyrating, tar-black void in which the sea and sky were seamlessly intermeshed. This account portrays a fearless and dedicated Coast Guard service never before revealed.

4 out of 5 stars Coming Back Alive.......2007-07-30

Excellent book. Keeps you on the edge of your seat. Very well written.A good look over the shoulder of the Coast Guard and at the life saving service they provide.

5 out of 5 stars Ken Boire author of Inherit the Tide.......2006-10-21

I was captured by the edge of the seat writing. I never questioned the events. For years I have been closely associated with commercial fishing in Alaska. At one time or another I have worked on every commercial harbor in the USA between Lost Angeles/Long Beach and Kotzebue. I am also a pilot and I grew up in Alaska. Spike Walker's descriptions are excellent. He did not need to fluff things to make the story work. From what some have said about the book I almost feel like one needs to have experienced the fury of the Bering Sea and Gulf to accept his account.

I passed the book to a reader unfamiliar with Alaska, commercial fishing, and the maritime industry. He had a hard time accepting it. I was stunned that people were so out of touch. Then I reminded myself storms that happen every year in Alaska only come once in 20 - 100 years on the east coast of the USA.

Spike Walker kept me involved. I might have been involved with a lesser writer but I kept thinking "Right on." I have seen the USCG show up when things looked grim. Spike's writing brought personal feelings back from 30 years ago.

As a writer I found myself studying the style. Anybody can report a storm but Spike let me feel the wind cutting through my fireside recliner. This is a five star book. It is a five star subject but only a five star writer like Spike Walker could have turned out "Coming Back Alive."

There is no overlapping of themes, events, or characters, between "Coming Back Alive" and "Inherit the Tide", but I wish I would have read Walker's book earlier. I got the sense his grip on the reader is developed by dragging them into the action. This same action-based relation with the reader is what makes his characters real. Being able to do that without overblown descriptions and accounts is a real talent. Nevertheless there is something to be said about the value of understated events that let the reader's imagination fill the gaps.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book...........2006-07-18

If you're a fan of the Discovery Show "Deadliest Catch" you need to read this book.
I couldn't put it down.

5 out of 5 stars real Alaskan flavor and good for helicopter enthusiasts.......2005-07-30

Walker does a good job of portraying the always-interesting folks who choose to live in the more remote corners of Alaska. He also does a good job of explaining the hazards and technology of small fishing boats in these waters. For a guy who doesn't actually fly helicopters he does a creditable job of explaining how the helicopter operations work. Maybe it is because I've been up to Alaska three times or because I'm a licensed helicopter pilot but I found this book much more interesting than Perfect Storm.

Note to helicopter nerds: If you fly helicopters in good weather for fun or airplanes IFR you must read this book to find out just what kinds of risks the Coast Guard pilots are willing to run.

5 out of 5 stars "I've Been There".......2005-02-11

After 20 years in the Coast Guard as a rescue pilot, I can attest, Spike has got it right! I flew the HH-52 in the prologue of "Working on the edge", spent 10 of 20 years in Kodiak and know some of the people involved. He captured the fear, the pride, the adrenaline rush, the feeling of accomplishment, the bravery and the "spirit de corps" of our noble service. Those who attack the grammar and use of adverbs missed the point and flavor of this great story teller. It wasn't all scary crap in the USCG as evidenced in my book "I Never Liked Those C-130's Anyway". Keep them coming Spike!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars CRITICAL Foundation for Understanding the End Times...........2006-04-03

This book's title, though accurate, won't sell books, which is unfortunate since this is one book whose message needs to get out. In fact, after a general prophecy overview book, this is the single book that I most recommend for the general reader as foundational in order to understand the End Times and the stage-setting taking place before our eyes. The book of Revelation cannot be understood without understanding the Old Testament book of Daniel to which it alludes and fleshes out, and this book by master teacher and scholar Showers is the best commentary on Daniel for the general reader.

The title is both a name of God used by the prophet Daniel as well as the theme of the book of Daniel--i.e., that God is sovereign, or "most high" over men, nations, and rulers, humbling and exalting whom He will (individuals, rulers, nations), in control of history, and even telling us in advance what will happen. This book is a verse-by-verse commentary on all of Daniel, a book that is about more than prophecy, though Daniel's chapters 2, 7, and 9 do focus on prophecy and are absolutely essential to understanding when the Messiah will come again, the geographic origins of the Antichrist, the upcoming 7-year covenant with Israel with its rebuilt Holy Place, the Man of Sin World Ruler, and more, including chapters 6-19 of Revelation, which are based on Daniel.

I recommend this book to people wanting to understand the End Times but who are unaware that the Tribulation, the coming confederated superpower, and the "Antichrist" of Revelation all refer back to Daniel. Although Renald Showers is relatively unknown to popular audiences (he's not the type to toot his own horn), he's known, respected, and cited among dispensational theologians. If there are few reviews for this book, it's not because this book is some fly-by-night, it's just that Showers' writings are mostly known through his decades of work with The Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry. Doctrinally, Showers is top-notch, always precise, never going beyond the text into eisegesis. He writes from a "pre-trib, pre-mil" view, that the rapture happens before the Tribulation that in turn is before the Millenium.

The Most High God, like Showers' other works, is known for doctrinal faithfulness, eschewing speculation and sensationalism, and adherence to a literal, historical-grammatical approach to interpretation. Some of his books (such as his masterpiece Maranatha) are heavy with indexes and endnotes, but not The Most High God, which keeps it simple, straightforward, and suitable for the beginner, yet it's still helpful for readers already familiar with Daniel. This book shows how scripture-to-scripture comparison, history, and context give insight into the symbolic prophetic images, such as the 10-headed beast. Showers does not get into alternative, comparative interpretations of Daniel, for that try Walvoord's Daniel: The Key to Prophetic Revelation. The Bible says that the book of Daniel is "sealed" until the End Times, that'd be now, and I can't recommend this commentary on Daniel highly enough as a starting point to making sense of what is happening in the world and what will happen.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2003-01-16

Excellent book. I would recommend any of Renald Shower's books to anyone who desires to get a better grasp of the Scripture. I have all of his books and use them quite frequently.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-10-08

One of the best general commentaries on Daniel from a dispensational/premillenial viewpoint.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and Good Book on Daniel.......2002-10-05

I admire Mr. Shower's view of the Bible. He has done a great job summarizing the book. The material is not indepth however it goes into enough information that any body reading it would say that his material is a great tool. I sometimes have a hard time reccomending a book especially to new believers, but if there is a new believer interested in studying the basics of the contribution of Daniel, then this is a great read!

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Finest Biblical Commentaries Available........2002-05-15

I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

If all Biblical commentaries were written like this, I would obtain a copy in relation to each and every single book of the Bible.

The author provides a clear, concise and non-technical Biblical teaching and exposition of the Book Of Daniel which covers vast areas of God's plan for human history, past, present and future.

We owe it to ourselves to be aware of the teachings outlined in this book. They are crucial to our understanding of the times in which we live and the events that we are shortly to face.

This book will be read and re-read time and time again.

2 out of 5 stars Reasonable overview, but more sophisticated scripts missing........1999-09-15

We were disappointed that the more sophisticated scripts alluded to in the text (those that would support 'high performance' in the title) were not included on the CD. We thought perhaps the missing scripts would be on the Coriolis web site, but the publisher's web site seems to indicate they no longer support the book. Therefore, this book is evidently obsolete.

5 out of 5 stars Great book fopr Oracle tuning.......1997-12-31

I spent hours looking at Oracle book, and this one was the easiest to understand and had the best tuning information. The CD-ROM was especially useful, and it had some tuning queries that allowed me to nearly double the speed of my application.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful for DBA's and non-DBA's alike.......1997-05-17

I was recently on a site where PowerBuilder reports were running very, very slowly (four hours and more). The SQL looked OK so I created some new, denormalized tables. Then I turned to Burleson's book for tuning Oracle as well as the one from O'Reilly. There was no DBA at this company and the books were a godsend. Burleson's is clear and you can easily pick out the parts that apply to your particular site. By the time I finished the reports ran in five minutes or less and this book was a real aid in getting that done

The legendary Boston Celtics broadcaster tells the story of his fabled career and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the team in this book mostly completed shortly before his 1993 death, epilogue by Larry Bird.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good, but...........2005-05-04

Overall, this is a worthwhile book for Celtics fans to buy. The epilog from Larry Bird alone makes it that.
Overall, Johnny told a lot of good stories and had good detail on his years with Boston. There were a couple of problems I had, however:
Namely, there were a lot of long quotes by players allegedly "told" to Johnny, and it was clear that they almost certainly never said them. I mean, was Johnny's memory that good, where he could recite word-for-word long passages said to him 20 years earlier?
It would have been a better book if he had just paraphrased what he thought they told him, instead of long, ridiculously formalized passages.
I'm a professional sports writer, and I can tell you athletes don't normally talk the way they are quoted in Johnny's book.
But still, there are a lot of good inside stories for C's fans. The back-and-forth ribbing between Bird and Rick Robey was something I didn't know, and there are a lot of good insights from players about Johnny himself. Robert Parish recouting Johnny's penchant for call girls, for instance.
I went to Johnny's basketball camp as a 12-year-old in Nashua, N.H., and he was very nice to all us kids. In fact, he did something nice for me; for some reason, I was getting picked on severely by a couple of older kids, to the point where I was crying and afraid to go anywhere. It was brutal. I mean, just out of the blue, these guys were making my life miserable.
So, I went to Johnny about it. I felt like a wuss in some ways, but they were a lot bigger and older than I was, and I just felt scared. I went to Johnny one night as he was sitting alone in the kitchen watching a rerun of "Hawaii 5-O" on a little black and white TV set.
I explained my problem, and was very concerned and sincere. A few minutes later, Johnny came into the room where all the boys had bunks and addressed it only for a minute. I can't remember the exact words he said, but it was something about how he can't stand an unfair fight, which was something he learned in the military.
And that was it. But it was enough to get the bullies off my ass, and I was grateful to him.
So, here's to you Johnny. Rest in peace, high above courtside.

5 out of 5 stars A clock radio in a time capsule.......2004-11-30

In the early 80's, all my friends had state-of-the-art electronic equipment for their listening pleasure. My friend Ty had a boom-box the size of a suitcase. Scott had the first walkman of our group. Dave had a massive stereo system in his bedroom, much to the dismay of the rest of his neighborhood and, later on in the 80's, Joe's family bought a CD player.

I personally could have cared less about music in those days. My "entertainment system" was a chocolate brown clock radio which the time was illuminated by an orange hue and the minute tiles flipped down every 60 seconds.

I don't even remember if the radio had an FM dial. I am, however, quite certain that WBZ 1030, the flagship station of the Boston Celtics, could be heard.

And the voice of the Celtics, Johnny Most, put me to sleep 82 times a year.

"High Above Courtside: The Lost Memoirs of Johnny Most" is a treasure for anyone else who grew up a basketball fan in New England. Published over 10 years after his death, Most chronologically recounts his early days in broadcasting and ultimately his personal experiences with the 16 NBA championships he called throughout the years.

Since his death in 1993, the Celtic organization, and the scope of the NBA has changed dramatically. Most's writing brings the reader back to the days when basketball was played the right way. He tells inside stories of every Celtic legend. There are lockerroom, hotel and plane ride adventures that only Most would know and find humorous enough to write about. And every one of the stories are terrific.

Johnny Most was clearly a talented man. His writing is spectacular. I laughed out loud many times the way he recounted stories, like the day his pants caught fire from a lit cigarette...while he was on air.

Most was a smart, witty, "homer" whose us-against-the-world attitude had millions of Celtic fans fired up to listen to him. His use of the English language was flawless. And his cantankerous demeanor toward referees and opposing players was priceless. Because of Johnny Most, I still call Isiah Thomas "Little Lord Fauntleroy". When Rick Mahorn flew into the stands during the Pistons/Pacer brawl, New Englanders immediately found the irony in "McNasty" being the peacemaker.

The book is a time capsule. Why it was not published before his death or sometime in the last ten years is beyond me. True, "High Above Courtside: The Lost Memoirs of Johnny Most", is an autobiography, but it's also a biography of the greatest franchise in professional sports history: the Boston Celtics.

It is a perfect Christmas gift for anyone who fell asleep to the scratchy, cigarette damaged, loud, surly, obnoxious yet soothing voice of New England legend Johnny Most.

5 out of 5 stars Reminiscences of The Ultimate Boston Celtics Fan!.......2004-04-27

No one ever cared as much about the Boston Celtics as did Johnny Most, the radio voice of the Celtics for 37 years including their 16 championship seasons. To him, no one in the green and white ever made a mistake. No opposing player failed to be a "bum" who was "mugging" the Celtics. The referees were all suspect . . . especially Jake O'Donnell. His rants anticipated the development of that form of entertainment, and came equipped in four different voices . . . depending on how outraged he was. Humor was always interceding as Johnny was known to get into brawls with fans, light himself on fire while smoking, insult the security guards who tried to get him to stop smoking, and told one revealing personal story after another that would leave us in stitches. But we never laughed at the man . . . but with him . . . because we knew he loved the Celtics.

Like almost everyone who loved the Celtics, I usually listened to his broadcasts on the radio even when watching the games on television (with the sound off). I would turn on the radio to hear the post-game show whenever I left a home game. My eye would often sweep up to see what antics he was up to while attending a game.

Basketball broadcasting hasn't been the same since Johnny left the field. Tommy Heinsohn is the closest we have now, but he's not the total fan (atic) that Johnny was.

The book is remarkable in many ways. It fills in the gaps in Johnny's story -- as a World War II hero, as someone learning to be a broadcaster in New York, as a New York-born Jew suffering from discrimination, as a loving father of four, a good friend to everyone on the Celtics, a hilarious (but challenging) companion during road trips, a patient recovering from a stroke, and a man keeping his dignity during his final illnesses.

Almost every page has an insider's story about one or more of the Celtics or other basketball insiders which I had never heard or read before. The stories are mostly heart-warming and are often quite funny as we find out more about the pranks that were pulled and by whom. Within those stories are subtle observations about why the various Celtics teams prospered or did not. Former owner John Y. Brown (who was widely despised in Boston) would do well to avoid this book.

While most autobiographies build the person up at the expense of others, the comments by many of the Celtics greats at the end seem to suggest that Johnny's comments actually understate his significance to the team, the franchise and to them personally.

One of the most fun parts of the book is where Johnny picks his top 15 opposing players (done before the full development of Michael Jordan because this book was begun many years ago while Johnny's health began to fail).

The only thing missing from this book is a CD of Johnny calling some of the most famous moments in Celtics history. But if you've ever heard his voice, you can hear him as you read his words.

Johnny may be famous for screaming, "Havlicek stole the ball," but in this autobiography "Most stole the scene."

Keep cheering, Johnny, wherever you are!

5 out of 5 stars A Most Familiar NBA Voice.......2004-02-12

Johnny Most was an original. As the Celtics play by play man, he rooted for Boston on the air. He berated anyone who did not wear a celtic uniform. Yet his calls were so thrilling and ear-piercing that they are still heard today introducing NBA telecasts---11 years after his death.
Most was inventive, imaginative and excitable. He once got so excited, his false teeth popped out and almost fell over the balcony and into the lap of an unsuspecting fan sitting below.
Even his targets---the refs, Jeff Ruland, Rick Mahorn, Rick Barry, Julius Erving, Wilt Chamberlain, and Isiah Thomas, among others----had fun battling Most, who once described Kurt Rambis as "something that had crawled out of a sewer.
The book is not a history of the Celtics but it does provide detailed insight into the personalities of players like Russell, Cowens and Bird.
If you're unaware of Most's "classic moments" in broadcasting, I guarantee you'll laugh your way through this book. The epilogue by Larry Bird is a tribute to Most, who countless Boston players termed "a loyal 'teammate' and friend."
Johnny Most helped many young, aspiring broadcasters. He critized the "new breed" of broadcasters who he said were "artificial and superficial." He called them clones because they all sounded the same, with no style of their own.
The language in "High Above Courtside" can be rough at times but this book was a pleasant surprise for me. Besides detailing Most's fascinating life, it provides a excellent picture of the Celtic players' personalities and life on the road in the NBA.

5 out of 5 stars One of A Kind.......2003-10-20

"High Above Courtside: The Lost Memoirs of Johnny Most is required reading for any true Celtics fan. '
The book chronicles Johnny's truly amazing career in a writing style that captures the broadcaster's passion for all sports and love of the Boston Celtics.
I found it amazing that Johnny Most was such a huge part of the Celtics that a number of players complained that he never received a championship ring.
The authors, Mike Carey and Jamie Most, pointed out various classic stories which few Celtics fans---even the diehard ones---probably weren't aware of.
I enjoyed this book tremendously. I bought it because I thought it would be interesting to read about Most's famous calls. However, the book was not just a rehash of his Celtics broadcasts. It was a fresh look at both Most as a person and his relationships with players, refs, owners, fans and his own family.
Even the pictures were excellent.

Book Description

This informative book will chronologically document the behind-the-scenes stories of the common people involved in the sacrifice to erect the second Mormon temple. First hand accounts are drawn from diaries, journals, and letters.

The prologue of this book discusses briefly the early temple building efforts of the fledgling Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the development of temple-related doctrines during the decade prior to the Nauvoo era, and the arrival of the Saints in Illinois in 1839. The body of the history covers the years 1840, when the temple was first contemplated, to 1850, when its walls were toppled by a hurricane. An epilogue completes the story by recounting the story of the repurchase of the temple lot by the Church in 1937, the lot's excavation in 1962, and the announcement that the temple would be rebuilt. Also included is an appendix containing important eyewitness descriptions of the temple, and a bibliography of major sources.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent and enjoyable read.......2007-07-30

This is the kind of book that you learn something on every page. This book is a comprehensive telling of the contruction of the Nauvoo Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon). It begins with a brief overview of the temple in LDS theology, then quickly moves into year-to-year, month-to-month, day-to-day events of the contruction process. The author takes you to the present-day.

There are gems all along the way. Just one of the items I particularly loved was the manner in which bishops became ecclesiastical leaders over ward units. Learn about the trials that beset the Saints during contruction. The sources used are originals, from newspapers, journals, and talks.

Many stories are included that enrich the text. The book is written from a faithful Latter-day Saint perspective. McBride does a nice job of balancing the sacred with the interesting. I would recommend this book of anyone interested in reading about the Nauvoo Temple.
