John Lucht, an executive recruiter during the past three decades for some of America's top corporations, knows what it takes to snag a new six-figure job. Rites of Passage at $100,000 to $1 Million+ is his newly revised guide to the ins and outs of a search for a job that ends in success. It promises a "comprehensive cram course in accelerating your career"--a contemporary corporate equivalent of the traditional initiation into adulthood from which it takes its title--updated for the cyber-age. And it delivers, with Lucht offering inside tips on the basic routes to a new executive-level position: personal contacts (i.e., "ask for a reference instead of a job"); networking ("never fail to get into the office of anyone whose name is mentioned to you, never depart with less than three new names"); executive recruiters ("understand their hidden financial arrangements"); direct mail ("write to the CEO or a person two levels above your target job"); and the Internet ("insert plenty of the right 'keywords' so that the computer will find your resume"). Extensive online references are also included throughout, and the material is presented in a way that's easy to understand and implement. --Howard Rothman

The book was in good condition. It came in the condition that was described in the advertisement.

5 out of 5 stars If you are a corporate executive, or if you want to be one, then you should purchase this book........2007-08-01

This week, I passed 300 connections on LinkedIn. Shortly thereafter, I received multiple unsolicited contacts from intellectual property recruiters. (I founded Clock Tower Law Group, which specializes in patent law and trademark law.) This is one of the downsides of LinkedIn: recruiter spam.

I have nothing against recruiters. In fact, a good retainer recruiter is worth his/her weight in gold. But a recruiter who works on contingency is a dime a dozen.

If you are a corporate executive, or if you want to be one, then you should purchase the book "Rites of Passage at $100,000 to $1 Million+: Your Insider's Lifetime Guide to Executive Job-Changing and Faster Career Progress in the 21st Century" by John Lucht. "Rites of Passage" explains how the recruiting business works and why the difference between retainer recruiters and contingency recruiters matters.

And no, I'm not looking for a job, but thanks for asking.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book before starting your job search.......2007-01-09

Read this book cover to cover before you begin to search for your next high-paying job. It will walk you through everything you need to do.

5 out of 5 stars Belongs on your bookshelf.......2006-08-23

The Rites of Passage belongs on anyone's bookshelf who's interested in actively managing their careers and gain that extra edge. Even if you're not close to $100k, the book gives you valuable insight into that realm. Understanding your boss and your boss' boss will make you a more valuable employee and may advance your career more than you realize.
If you are at $100k+ I can't imagine successfully managing your career without Lucht's insight. His decades of experience will help you manage transitions properly and in a proactive manner.
My only minor gripes are (1) The typesetting. I have a nagging feeling he did this himself, it could definitely be done better (2)The minor section on usage of the Internet is dated and could be done better. I doubt John had someone appropriate look this over. Still, he earns top rating.
Thanks to manager-tools.com for recommending this book.

4 out of 5 stars Truly useful advice that's hard to find elsewhere.......2006-02-09

In close to 600 pages that are much denser than most business and self-help books, John Lucht doles out a thorough treatment of every topic you'd expect to see, and then some.

Lucht's description of the executive recruitment business is espeicially illuminating - I would have distributed my resume far too freely if I hadn't read this book. Several chapters are dedicated to finding recruiters, separating the good from the bad, and recruiter interactions.

Of course, there is also plenty of networking, interviewing, and resume-writing advice. It seems that Lucht approached this book as if writing his own resume: it's jam-packed with facts, and doesn't mince words; it has a flowing narrative style punctuated by headlines for easy scanning; it touts his credibility, accomplishments, and recruiting services without inflated, ambiguous adjectives.

It's not perfect, though. Lucht overhypes the subscription services on his Web site, ritesite.com. He repeats certain points mind-numbingly often. He suggests that people include marital status, height, and weight on resumes; as a small, single woman, I doubted that. Some of his internet job search suggestions are already outdated, and his preference of old-fashioned direct mail is questionable for technology industry jobs. But given his vast experience, his opinions are certainly valid. And most of his suggestions are painstakingly justified by facts and examples.

I recommend buying the accompanying Executive Job-Changing Workbook. It provides additional resume and interview coaching, and its worksheets are useful tools for organizing thoughts.

5 out of 5 stars Christian Book Previews.......2004-07-24

The Young Man in the Mirror is a great book written for teen guys ages 13 to 18. The book opens with Morley's life story which ropes the reader from the first paragraph. The author covers morals, dating situations, and other life impacting decisions.

As a 14 year guy, this book encouraged me to be a godly man and leader in this world. Morley used illustrations from his own life as examples of what to do or what not to do. He stated that men want to have a mission in life. If there is no mission, there is no life. God designed men to be protectors. A man cannot be a protector and a jerk at the same time.

Morley is a popular speaker in my area in the Midwest for men's retreats and his books are frequently used in men's Bible studies. The Young Man in the Mirror could be a Bible study opportunity for older men to mentor the next generation.

The Young Man in the Mirror instructs teenage boys how to live honorably. I tend to be a reluctant reader, but didn't have any trouble getting through this book. I passed my copy on to my friend. I recommend The Young Man in the Mirror for all young men and older men who act young. -- Josiah Wells, Christian Book Previews.com

This book was a quick read and full of information on God's path for young men. It served as a tool to deepen my faith and answer some difficult questions that are hard to ask someone in person. This would be a great gift for any teenage guy!

Prayer "...changes people at a cellular level, and with each one who changes, others are brought miraculously closer to enlightenment." Prayer thus can save the world. Marianne Williamson, celebrated author of A Return to Love, meditates on the nature of prayer and its collective power in this commentary, and offers actual prayers that address our hopes and struggles.

The first part of Illuminata expresses the inimitable Williamson conviction in the collective spiritual revolution at hand. "We seek to replace an old, oppressive order, not so much politically or socially, but within our minds where it lives and works," she writes with unbridled energy and urgency. Although her examples of individuals who exemplify this change can be daunting, still they offer vivid pictures of human courage and generosity. For instance, she cites the character played by Ben Kingsley in Schindler's List as exemplifying selfless acts of generosity in a tormented world. This suggests that her book is a kind of path through human spiritual evolution. Indeed, for Williamson, illumination is "...the spiritual tunnel through which the soul finds its way out of ego-bound darkness into mystical light."

We are reminded that the purpose of prayer is not to gain an object of desire, or relief from one's hounding problems, or even results that are particularly discernible. The purpose is to experience God. To that end, Williamson offers seven sections on prayers, making this a practical text as well as a spirited commentary. The reader will find a vast range of prayers--daily; celebratory; those that seek relief from depression and despair; prayers for ritual; and prayers that expand into the larger realm of social justice (such as "Amends to the Native American"), demonstrating Ms. Williamson's ongoing commitment to join the political and the spiritual.

Book Description

Marianne Williamson's bestselling A Return to Love ended with a prayer in which she asked God to help us "find our way home, from the pain to peace, from fear to love, from hell to Heaven." Now, in this stunning new collection of thoughts, prayers, and rites of passage, Marianne Williamson returns to prayer.

Prayer is practical, Williamson tells us. "To look to God is to look to the realm of consciousness that can deliver us from the pain of living." Illuminata brings prayer into our daily lives, with prayers on topics from releasing anger to finding forgiveness, from finding great love to achieving intimacy. There are prayers for couples, for parents, and for children; prayers to mend broken relationships and prayers to overcome obsessive and compulsive love. There are prayers to heal the soul, prayers to heal the body, and prayers for work and creativity.

Williamson also gives us prayers for the healing of America, including two prayers that have had powerful effects on audiences at her lectures: a prayer of amends on behalf of European Americans to African-Americans and one to Native Americans. How, Williamson asks, can we expect anyone to forgive when we have made no formal apology?

Another section includes rites of passage, ceremonies of light for the signal events in our lives: blessing of the newborn, coming of age, marriage, and death. There is also a ceremony of the elder, for moving into midlife, and a ceremony of divorce, in which a gentle transition is provided for both the couple and their children.

"Read my prayers or someone else's," Williamson says. "By all means, create your own." Illuminata is a way to bring prayer into practical use, creating a sweeter, more abundant life for yourself and the people you care for. "No conventional therapy," she says, "can release us from a deep and abiding psychic pain. Through prayer we find what we cannot find elsewhere: a peace that is not of this world."

4 out of 5 stars Imagine If Everybody Prayed..........2002-02-04

...then we all will see the world as heaven.

I don't necessarily consider myself deeply religious, but I find that I can't do without some kind of spirituality in my life. In my searching and my reaching I have come to the conclusion that one of our biggest errors is in thinking that the universe owes us something...something big, something tremendous and representing the greatest degree of wealth. In my opinion, in actuality, it is the other way around....we owe the universe a great deal and all we owe will take a lifetime or two to even consider repaying . It is because of all these debts that the world (and our 'personal accounts') is so messed up. There's no easy way to even the score so to speak because the way we live seems to award the biggest exploiters and we choose to carry about in a way that the exploiters will benefit, and we become just like the exploiters....and to our chagrin, even with riches, power and respect (even if they feel good, initially) we feel empty.

But...

We can try to honor the ways of the universe by the giving of some our services, our money, our time, our talent and our strenght without looking for any payment in return, and we can tap into the energy of the universe by prayer. Because the true ways of the universe is giving and loving and brilliant of light.

So, in Illuminata, Williamson begins with an eloquent and stirring 'fin de siecle with the moons and the love soldiers lining up' to take the world to a spiritual renaissance. My opinion about that is the world has always been on the brink of a spiritual upheaval and renewal, if you think about it. Williamson, though quite passionate and persuasive, brings nothing new to the table in her introductory chapter....but I am quite fond of her retelling of a tale often told. And although her star quality has faded throughout the years, she is still a force to be reckoned with. In Illuminata, she puts in plain spoken terms what the people of earth need to do to survive another millenium. Pray. Pray because you are part of a great moment in time. Pray for your work relationships, your family relationships, your enemies and the people who you don't see who brings the electricity to your fingertips and the brass on your doorknob. Pray for the nation, pray for happiness, pray for the elders, the children, pray for the universe.

Pray for the universe.

"Read my prayers or someone else's", Williamson asserts.

I say, (and, here, I'm only seconding Williamsons' motion) "Imagine if everybody prayed..."

I am not sure what i was expecting, but it wasnt this. i think this book is more for those who actually perform ceremonies as a career, or something. i just wanted some good alternative ideas to holidays and the traditional christian way of doing things here in this country, which the book did provide. but i got lost in the details of the verbage suggested during ritual. although i will keep the book on my shelf and maybe look through it every now and then.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Tool For Alternative Ceremonies.......2003-07-17

I am surprised that I am the first reviewer of this book since I have found this work to be such a valuable resource in alternative ceremonies.

When my father died earlier this year, I was the one who deliver his eulogy since my dad "did not want anyone to speak over him who did not know him or his life.

That my father had suddenly and unexpectaly died was devastating enough, when coupled with the fact that I had to deliver his eulogy, I was, needless to say, a nervous wreck.

Being that I had for many years subscribe to an alternative spiritual belief (alternative to Christianity) I was lucky enough to have this book on hand. Its contribution in helping me sort out my words were enormous because although I had wonderful memories of my father, I really didn't know what to do with those memories--how to put them into words and how to deliver them in a segued and coherent testimonial to my father's life in front of what turned out to be 135 relatives and friends.

The Rituals Alternative Weddings, Funerals, Holidays and Other Rites of Passage guided me through putting all my memories together. It served as an outline for the eulogy that I wrote. The author not only provided 3 full funeral services, which I modified to my liking, but other practical and knowledgeable information on funerals and dying such as: meditations, the pre-planning of one's funeral, legal information, poems that would be appropriate to read at a funeral (two of which I used), and additional resources.

And for as good as this book is on funeral info, it is equally well written in the other topics that it covers, such as: Marriage, rites-of-passages--love, parenting and adulthood rites, alternative holidays--Winter Solstice, Christmas, Valentines Day, Labor Day, Autumn Equinox, etcetera.

Finally, throughout the book (as opposed to at the end of the book) the author list many relevant resources one may want to refer to for further information on the subject at hand. The Rituals Alternative Weddings, Funerals, Holidays and Other Rites of Passage is a truly wonderful "tool" for anyone who is looking for information on alternative rites.

5 out of 5 stars Another good one.......2005-12-30

Another great graphic novel by John Ostrander. Rite of Passage picks up around where Darkness left off, so it continues the story of Quinlan Vos. In Rite of Passage, Vos is first shown fighting bounty hunters paid for by the enemies he made by following Master Zao's advice, as told in Darkness. Zao said he "is a leaf that is swept by the Force", so Vos begins to try this. His former Padawan, Aayla Secura, helps him out of the jam and tells how her Master (Tholme, who was also Vos' former Master) got kidnapped along with the royal heir of Ryloth. They then join Villie the Devaronian again and track them down. The Morgukai Assassins that actually did the kidnappping were pretty cool fighters, but were otherwise stupid. The flashback in the beginning of this book that showed Aayla and Quinlan meet was also excellent, as it shows how Aayla was found and brought to the Temple. Throughout all of Rite of Passage there was superb art. Also, the good binding made it better since my last TPB, Darkness, fell apart in my hands. Great art, dialogue, plot, binding, everything. Another winner.

      4 out of 5 stars A blast of a read.......2004-03-15

Buckle your belts, hold on to your hide, Rite of Passage is a blast. The team that gave you Twilight and Darkness are back, just as good, and showing why Dark Horse comics have never been better.

The quality of art is what you've come to expect from the Duursema-Kryssing team: fanciful illustrations, vibrant colours, you won't be disappointed. With Aayla looking like a bundle of cuteness in the opening scenes, and Villie back to grinning again, even if his page time was less than prior comics, it's back to old times.

Dialogue varies between the cast, though the Morgukai syntax limits creativity with their short sentences. Even the Jedi get some good lines, and for once aren't the usual wimps they seem to be. The Morgukai want Vos and Secura dead, they'll have to work for it. Which, of course, just gives room for some good snappy one-liners.

What is it with comics, that full names must be mentioned almost each time? Readers know who Quinlin Vos and Aayla Secura are; what need is there for characters to address each other with both names? Crimson Empire, the TOTJ and Ongoing series, they all did this.

There's nothing extravagant about the plot. The comic introduces Nat Secura, the young Twi'lek fans will remember Bib Fortuna making a fuss over in Tales from Jabba's Palace. His abduction has Vos and Secura in hot pursuit, and a father-son duo of Morgukai hunters not far behind. A race against time to avert interclan war, with the life of their master hanging in the balance as well. One will ascend to Jedi Master, the other to Knight, and the fun begins.

The only issue of contention was how the Morgukai son survived to appear later, as readers last saw him stranded in the middle of a lava flow. How he could possibly get out of that could easily have been clarified with a line or two, and not spoil anything. Meant to surprise the reader, it taxed credulity, compounded again in the last pages.

Overall, Rite of Passage is another great comic by the talented team you know can deliver the goods and more. And with character development continuing to evolve in new directions, avid fans are sure to follow them as the new stories come.

      Book Description

Women's Rites of Passage grew out of Abigail Brenner's desire to answer some fundamental questions about the role of rites of passage in contemporary women's lives. Relying on a research study involving over 50 women, Brenner shows how women today understand the need to take responsibility for their lives and for directing their own paths, and are beginning to do so by creating their own very personal rites of passage.

Abigail Brenner shows us the strengh of woman and thier enless ability to find ways to create passage through the challenges of thier lives. Each story is a personal and creative gem. It is a great comfort to know there is not just one way to deal with the flow of life ,it's changes and it's sorrows. All woman seem to have the instinct to create rites to honor and make sence out of the events of thier lives . In this book the stories are so vivid and evocative. As a healer and a minister I have found it a great tool and a good example of how we heal.

A facinating read. Really sheds some light on the importance of ritual in enriching womens' lives in this time of 'non-ritual' community living. A deep and interesting exploration by an excellent story teller. I recommend.

I have read this book a thousand time. The pages are getting dog-eared and the margins are full of notes. I was really hoping that Glorida Karpinski had written another soul revealing book. But it would be hard to top this fabulously insightfull exploration of the human experience.

        5 out of 5 stars Inner Changes.......2000-03-18

For me, I have come to the conclusion after reading this wonderful book, that all I have to do is relax. Everything and everyone who are in my life are in it for a specific purpose. This book also helped me realize that the journey is just as important as the goal. I wish Gloria would write another book, she is a wonderful author. I hope she realizes how much she has helped so many people. Thankyou Gloria.

I found this magical book in the used books section of a bookstore, read it, and was transformed by its wisdom. I'll never part with it. God love you, Gloria! I wish you'd write another book, wherever you are... And to the reader who asks why this book is out of print, well, the other day I saw it in the metaphysical section of Borders and so wonder if it's been revived?

5 out of 5 stars If you were to choose only one book to read............1999-11-02

I first read this book 5 years ago and it made so much sense of my then senseless world! I just re-read it this past week and was amazed to see how much of the wisdom in this book I had incorporated into my life, the positive affects it has had on me, and that there was more to learn that I did not get the first time around! You will want to read it again and again. This is a MUST HAVE book for anyone who wants to understand the turmoil in their life and how spiritual growth happens. I would also recommend it to those in healing practices and counsiling. A great gift!!! Yes... I want to see this book available again!
