A seminal work of American Literature that still commands deep praise and still elicits controversy, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is essential to the understanding of the American soul. The recent discovery of the first half of Twain's manuscript, long thought lost, made front-page news. And this unprecedented edition, which contains for the first time omitted episodes and other variations present in the first half of the handwritten manuscript, as well as facsimile reproductions of thirty manuscript pages, is indispensable to a full understanding of the novel. The changes, deletions, and additions made in the first half of the manuscript indicate that Mark Twain frequently checked his impulse to write an even darker, more confrontational book than the one he finally published.

Book Description

In addition to the entire text of what some consider the quintessential American novel, this comprehensive volume features materials that help place the novel in perspective with its time and place. "Contexts" includes essays on the composition of the novel, the people and history of the Upper Mississippi Valley, slavery, and the critical reception of the novel upon its publication. "Readings" includes Henry Nash Smith's introduction to the 1958 Riverside Edition of the novel, as well as critical essays.

5 out of 5 stars An Adventure.......2007-08-30

It has been said that all American literature begins with The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Reading this book for the first time was a delight. Though I was thoroughly familiar with most of the story, I still found the book to be a page turner. The character of Huck, the manchild, has to be one of the most fascinating in all of literature.

5 out of 5 stars The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Bantam Classics).......2007-08-05

I read this book years ago when I was very young, but it still stands today as my alltime favorite. As I turned the pages, I lived that exciting adventure along with Huck and Jim. The language is a bit difficult at first, but you get the hang of it rather quickly. It is recommended reading for all ages.

Again, I am never disappointed in purchasing books from you because they are always superior to buying local. Thanks for your service you provide to your customers.

5 out of 5 stars Legendary.......2007-06-25

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: classic. I really enjoyed this book. Mark Twain managed to keep the boyish atmosphere of the Adventures of Tom Sawyer while adding in adult like concepts, such as decisive moral choice and honor, to create a work of fiction that many hail to be the "Great American Novel."

If you're not familiar with the story: Huck, after having found riches with Tom Sawyer, is living with the Widow Douglas and no longer leading a life of vagrancy. I won't go too deeply into the story because: a) there are a lot of plot elements and it would be impossible and b) it really is something that you have to experience through the eyes and in the language of Huck Finn (the entire story is written from his perspective and in his dialect as opposed to the Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which was written in Twain's distinct voice). Notable plot elements: Huck's escape from Pap, Jim and Huck's travel down the Mississippi, the Duke and the Dauphin and the Royal Nonesuch, and Huck and Tom's (who is present at the end of the book) contrivance to "free" Jim (you'll understand the "quotations" after you read the book).

Overall, all the hype surrounding this book is well deserved. Anyone who can read the English language should read this book (it should be a requirement punishable by death). You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars An adventurous novel, my favorite book!.......2007-06-12

Witness Huck's transformation into maturity, through reading this captivating book that preaches independence and loyalty. Huck's dedication to his friend, Jim, is truly touching and serves as an inspiration to all!
Since the beginning of Huck's journey, Huck is living on his own without real adult supervision for the first time. He escapes from the custody of his abusive and manipulative father, and runs into Jim, who becomes a father figure to Huck later on in the story. Along with this "independence" Huck is forced to make his own decisions, which Huck first derives from the racist thoughts he had learned growing up, which he was having problems applying to his new African American, and escaped slave, friend. As Huck sees the cruelties of the world, where the white race call African Americans "[...]" and when the life of a slave is not valued, he eventually decides that what he was taught as a young child, no longer applied to the circumstances that he now lived in. As a reader, we can read and marvel at the brave adventures that Huck takes on and acknowledge him for his independent thinking!
Huck's refusal to give up their friendship and trust, and the knowledge and wisdom that Huck gained should be envied by everyone. Therefore, Huck is an inspiration for courageously breaking away from the negative views of society by upholding honor and establishing his individuality. Don't miss out on a book that can change your own outlook on life, learn the positive impact your decisions can make on the world!

3 out of 5 stars Another of Satan's Spiderwebs.......2004-09-02

If you decide to review Anton's "The Satanic Bible" this would be
an interesting read as well. It gives a further look into Anton's mindset and Frame of Reference. I found him to be a bit morose in his thinking and outlook. Anton's opinion is only one opinion on social commentary - which he was entitled to his opinion. Not everyone would agree with him - but he does make a few good points however. I don't find him totally off base in his thoughts. For the record - Anton did not invent the Church of Satan much against what some would like to believe - A little Research on the subject might suggest different. Bringing it into a more socially acceptable/public forum light might be more accurate. Satan likes and thrives on the uninformed and Satanic Prophets like Anton. 2 Timothy 3:1-5

1 out of 5 stars Ehhhh.......2004-06-11

This book does contain a few good perspectives and essays, but I wouldn't waste my time. When I say a few, I mean a few. The further and further I got into the book, the less impressed I was with LaVey, and the more I considered him a JOKE. Just tonight, I read a whole list of LaVey's lies - on the churchofsatan.org website nonetheless! But anyways, this book sucks. Check out some Nietzsche or Crowley instead.

3 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup for the Atheist and Misanthropic Soul........2003-09-12

You'll find LaVey's cynicism and dark humor intact in this book. This book is a fun read and isn't as bullet holed as his other work with LaVey's spiritually non-spiritual philisophy. Nice one-liners that can be woven into your own conversation and make you the silver tongued golden boy of your counter culture social cliche'. LaVey's life is filled with controversy, lies, and mild delusion. Truth being untold over his decades of involvement with CoS. Truth being lost to his grave. Truth likely being lost years before his own death. This is LaVey's last work and it's like he knows it. It's an interesting look at a man, without a god to answer to, facing his death.

4 out of 5 stars Nice little collection of essays from good 'ol Uncle Anton.......2003-02-14

Published after his death, Anton LaVey's Satan Speaks does not focus on one immediate subject; but is instead a collection of essays from the founder of the Church of Satan on late 20th century culture. Such passages contain LaVey's rants on child abuse, connections between a Satanist and a Jew, abortion, and my favorite, the laugh out loud "Don't Bathe" which features LaVey's rampant celebration of body odor. Although it seems that most of Satan Speaks is more self indulged than any of LaVey's other works, it is still a great read nonetheless, and the bits of dark humor throughout will guarantee a chuckle or two out of any Satanist or fan of LaVey's work.

3 out of 5 stars For completists only.......2003-02-02

The essays which make up the book "Satan Speaks" were written by Anton Szandor LaVey as his life drew to a close. His life would be considered exhausting by any standard, and in reading "Satan Speaks" his fatigue was apparent. Gone is the revolutionary spirit that went into "The Satanic Bible" and, to a slightly lesser degree, "The Devil's Notebook." It is largely replaced by crabbiness and an almost pathetic attempt at justifying his existence. For example, in the essay, "My Enemy" LaVey bemoans the fact that he can no longer by an ice cream cone for a nickle because of other people's greed. Where is the LaVey who called greed a Satanic virtue? Other essays seem to be aimed at puffing himself up as THE figure of evil. In a list of self-quotes he applauds himself for being the only person to codify Satanic thought. Was he expecting thanks for doing so doing so? Wasn't vain and empty self-promotion one of the things he heckled the Christian church for?

Despite this, "Satan Speaks" does offer some excellent essays. One essay on invisibility gives a free lesson in practical magic. Another titled "Sleepers, Scarcity and Orphans" articulately champions the cause of maintaining individual identity against the forces of mediocrity. In short, this isn't a bad book, but it is an inconsistent one. If one is simply curious about the founder of the church of Satan, I recommend "The Devil's Notebook." For serious students there is "The Satanic Bible." I can only recommend "Satan Speaks" to those who feel the need to read everything LaVey wrote.

    Book Description

Photographs are an integral part of our daily lives from sensationalist images in tabloid papers and snapshots, to art photograpy displayed in galleries and sold through international art markets. In this thought-provoking exploration of the subject, Edwards combines a sense of the historical development of photography with an analysis of its purpose and meaning within a wider cultural context. He interrogates the way we look and think about photographs, and considers such issues as truth and recording, objectivity and fine art, identity and memory.

I shopped a long time to locate this publication. It is worth the cost and the wait. For anyone wishing for a glimpse of different cultural rituals of family, this is a must have for your collection.

      2 out of 5 stars Misguided text.......2005-08-19

Sure, the photographs look nice on big glossy oversized spreads... But I have to consider the message of the book, as loosely given in the text that introduces, accompanies, and then summarizes this collection of photos. Although the book will likely impress and inform readers about cultural diversity, unfortunately the text tries to claim how amazingly similar all these patterns are. It tries at every turn to introduce mystical elements and bases this whole approach on an interpretation of psychologist Carl Jung's conception of archetypes and the "collective unconscious." It is really too bad that the editor and commenters were so limited in their approach - tending toward the poetic rather than the analytic - for this book could have served as an introduction to the principles of cultural diffusion, history, culture areas, and other anthropological and sociological concepts and principles. Instead of looking at how the people of Madagascar had travelled from Southeast Asia, or (sometimes forceful) patterns in the spread of the "world religions" caused replacement or hybridization with traditional religions, or how the similarities in indiginous religions are rooted in the similar levels of technology and societal size/type (foragers, horticulturalists, agriculturalists, etc.); this book instead would suggest that similarities between its hand-picked photographs are supposed to show the existence of either God or a collective unconscious. It would have helped for the book to provide a clear definition of the "collective unconscious" that can actually fit in with modern understandings of cultural diffusion, memetics, social systems and cultural evolution. But it didn't; and so there was a large opportunity missed to reveal one of the truly remarkable cultural advances of modern times; that of rational and cumulative scientific endeavors. This book will instead only impress with the proneness of humanity to cling to the irrational. Instead of just a couple of quotes from Jung and Joseph Campbell, this book desperately needs quotations from Freud and Durkheim! Instead, this large tome addresses things at the same level as your average travelogue tv show. It whets the appetite and even feeds you a bit, but the "food" turns out to be candy rather than meat.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning photography, great depth of feeling........1999-08-11

This book deals with "the big picture". I got a sense of viewing customs through time. The many cultures shown are contrasted in an exciting way. Stunning photographs showing rituals surrounding birth, death, marriage, etc. are accompanied by intelligent, inspiring copy. A beautiful and thought provoking book.

      Book Description

This anthology for first and second year students introduces them to the history of key ideas in the modern period related to sexual difference, gender, race, class, and sexuality. While most introductory Women's Studies textbooks focus on the United States, even if they add multiculturalism to the discussion, this book looks at the history of important differences between women in diverse locations around the world and continually challenges students to think through the issues that are raised.

This transnational approach to understanding gender brings Women's Studies into an era of globalization and connects women’s issues in the United States to women’s issues elsewhere. The book shows how colonialism and imperialism, as they spread across the world, shaped ideas about gender as much as other modern phenomena. It addresses issues of power and inequalities and focuses on links and connections rather than commonalties. The readings are truly interdisciplinary, drawing upon scholarly work in many disciplines and interdisciplinary fields as well as non-scholarly sources.

This book was a good introduction to Women's Studies, especially for those who have never taken a class or major in Women's Studies. The format of the book made it easy to understand concepts introduced in the essays. They even have a key terms section, which I found VERY helpful. Some of the essays can be dense, like the one going over intersectionality. Overall, I found this book very pleasant to read.

        Book Description

Based on the premise that one of the best ways for a student to understand a topic is to write about it, this is a book that teaches students how to write philosophical essays. Geared toward first-time philosophy students, the book is a supplement for any Philosophy course in which the instructor requires the students to write essays. Most of the work involved in a Philosophy class is reading assigned material, thinking about it, and then writing about it – whether on an exam or in an essay written outside of class. This book is designed to make all three of those activities easier. Writing to Learn begins with helpful hints on how to read philosophy (chapter 2). In chapters 3 through 7 students are guided through several different types of essays, beginning with the simplest summaries that demonstrate knowledge and understanding, and progressing through essays that require the application of theories to new situations, the analysis and evaluation of arguments used, and finally, the synthesis of several theories or arguments.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful advice, helpfully given........2002-07-02

I started using this book in my philosophy classes as a supplement for student writing and thinking. The book uses Bloom's taxonomy to build student thinking and writing from the simply understanding what you are reading (being to able to paraphrase and summarize) to applying it, analyzing and evaluating it, and finally synthesizing it with your own beliefs. Edwards' explanations are short but very much to the point, and she includes examples both good and bad to clarify her ideas. Her basic belief I think is right on: the best way to understand a topic is to have to write about it. More people need to see this connection between thought and paper! Edwards never talks down to you either. This gives the basics principles clearly and concisely, and is an excellent way to improve philosohical thinking and writing!

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-10-31

This book is excellent. It belongs in the same category as Strunk and Whit's book on writing. It is only 106 pages long. But the author uses every inch to deliver sound advice about writing philosophy essays in particular and other kinds of essays in general. In seperate chapters, she explains and illustrates the different kinds of essays that are assigned in college philosophy courses: essays for understanding, application, analysis, evaluation and systhesis. She even discusses how to research philosophy problems and take philosophy exams. She must have worked very hard to pack so much sound advice into such a slim volume. Any philosophy student who "understands" and applies her principles will enhance his GPA dramatically. This book should be required reading in every undergraduate and graduate philosophy course.

          Book Description

The third level of a three-book series, Great Essays introduces students to the process of writing and teaches them to use logic for creating, organizing, and supporting their ideas. Students become familiar with process, development, and revision through relevant practice, while learning reading and writing skills and grammar and language usage. Twenty-five sample essays provide a range of rhetorical styles, examples of essay organization and cohesion, as well as a starting point for comprehension questions and discussion.

Each model essay includes brief pre- and post-reading questions that focus on features such as structure and rhetorical patterns. Sentence-level work helps students understand different lengths and types of construction and gives them practice combining shorter sentences into longer, cohesive ones. In addition, Language Focus sections help students learn to make accurate word choices and use writing devices such as transitional words and modals. At the end of every unit, students practice rhetorical modes with Original Writing assignments on a variety of topics.
