1 out of 5 stars My first recipe out of this book was a total disaster........2007-09-23

I bought this book as a gift for my mother in law, who had the first and loved it. I thought I would try the "Cheesecake Factory Raspberry White Chocolate Truffle Cheesecake" out of it for a party. The recipe seemed a little different as I was making it. For example, usually when making a cheesecake you don't add the eggs all together, as it will curdle the mixture.
After I baked this cheesecake (for longer than specified, as it was obviously not done at his appointed time), it looked fine, although it was excreting a strange greasy substance from the bottom of the pan. But after I chilled it and removed the sides of the pan, it was still a very raw egg mixture.
I tried to bake it some more, but the cake refuses to bake. I have made successful cheesecakes before, and this recipe clearly is flawed and wasted a lot of money. Needless to say, I will be wary of any more of his recipes and I would say that if one of these recipes seems strange to you, you should probably change it if you would like a successful product.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful.......2005-06-18

The fact that this book is so richly illustrated is amazing. The images were printed, using slides of photos that the Craighead brothers took over 60 years ago, yet they are absolutely beautiful. (a testament to the legitimacy of their involvement with National Geographic)
The experience of reading this book is truly like tagging along on the adventure vacation of a lifetime. You will yearn for time in India, and for time with enthusiastic naturalists.
If you're in need of a cheap vacation... buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Life With an Indian Prince.......2003-11-01

This is the best book I've ever read! It's the next best thing to time travel. The Craigheads were invited to visit India as the special guest of a Maharaja's brother, with National Geographic footing the bill. They kept daily logs of their, thoughts, experiences, observations and political debates as they traveled to and from India by ship, just before the US entered World War II. The Craigheads were young collage students who were defining the state of the art in wildlife photography. They experience falconry in India a level that is no longer possible, hunt with Cheetah and attend a lavish royal wedding.

Book Description

The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys is the sweeping history of two immigrant families, their rise to become potent political dynasties, and the marriage that brought the two together to found the most powerful family in America. Drawing on unprecedented access to the family and its private papers, Pulitzer Prize-winning and bestselling historian Doris Kearns Goodwin takes readers from John Francis "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald's baptism in 1863 through his reign as mayor of Boston, to the inauguration of his grandson as president ninety-eight years later. Each character emerges unforgettably: the young, shrewdly political Rose Fitzgerald; her powerful, manipulative husband, Joseph P. Kennedy; and the "Golden Trio" of Kennedy children -- Joe Jr., Kathleen, and Jack -- whose promise was eclipsed by the family's legacy of tragedy.

Through the prism of two self-made families, Goodwin reveals the ambitions and the hopes that form the fabric of the American nation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An exceedingly readable history of Irish Americans and two powerful families.......2006-04-23

Dr. Goodwin writes wonderfully about American politics, the Irish Catholic immigration and integration into the polical landscape of Boston, and two families, both with terrific strengths and well noted weaknesses. The writing on Rose Fitzgerald and Joe Kennedy, Sr are particularly good. One gets a visceral feel of destiny as the desire to succeed, almost at any cost, throughout her well researched and written work. Much has been written about "plagarism" or a lack of proper footnoting (corrected in the paperback edition). I would encourage all potential readers to not allow such an unfortunate circumstance in her many years of teaching and writing to get in the way of reading this important piece of U.S. history. This book is a well researched and incredibly well written and readable account of immigration, politics and the rise of 19th Century immigrant families to economic, social and political prominence.

5 out of 5 stars The Mesmerizing Story of America's Royal Family.......2005-01-31

I was thoroughly enthralled, gripped and engaged in this story of three generations of the Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys. The story begins in 1863 with the baptism of John Francis Fitzgerald in Boston and concludes almost 100 years later with the inauguration of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. The families' roots are traced back to the great immigration following the Irish potato famine in the 1840's. From immigration to becoming the American royal family in just three generations is a remarkable achievement that is chronicled in fascinating detail in this comprehensive, definitive narrative.

Even though it is more than 800 pages, the book is not a dry history text, but rather an intriguing glimpse into the lives of the charmed and sometimes tragic lives of this huge Irish Catholic clan. Nothing is omitted, from the affairs of Joseph Kennedy, to the flirtations of Kathleen, the appalling lobotomy of Rosemary, and the sexual antics of John F. Kennedy. The political shenanigans of the elder Fitzgerald provide an interesting examination of Boston politics in the early 1900's...rife with graft and insider manipulation.

The author's writing style is rich, powerful and mesmerizing. For instance, to describe the ascent of JFK into the limelight of American politics, she writes: "For his capacity to arouse the questing imagination of his fellow citizens, and of much of the world beyond America's borders, was to elevate the family saga past the borders of mythology. By the beginning of the fifties he already contained all the elements which his leadership was to be compounded, forged in tumultuous experience, anchored and given direction by his often resented but always unbreakable links to his extraordinary family."

The level of detail and insightful analysis into the complex characters and relationships in the family is well worth your investment of time in reading this tome. A book you won't soon forget.

5 out of 5 stars the book of the century.......2003-06-15

this is the best book about the kennedys.
it'svery complete. the book ends when jack becomes president, i hope she will write a follow-up. there are a lot of rares photos.
she's tells us mainly about the golden trio( jack, joejr and kathleen).
i suggest all the fans of the kennedys to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable book!!.......2003-06-15

This is by far the BEST book about the young Kennedys. It tells about the history of the Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys. Even if you haven't got the slightest interest in the Kennedys or dislike them, READ THIS BOOK! And if you like the Kennedys YOU MUST ABSOLUTELY HAVE THIS IN YOU COLLECTION! There are so cute and adorable photos!! Never seen them elsewhere! I really hope that Goodwin will write another book about the following years, because this book stops in 1960. This is such a good book!!

p.s. Buy the other edition, this one hasn't got any photos.

5 out of 5 stars Herein lies a proper Spotlight Review . . . ........2002-12-21

A note to Mr. Kerwick and to "thomasmcgauley" regarding their opinions of The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys: An American Saga -- to rate a book poorly based on your opinion of the author is not necessarily the purpose of these Spotlight reviews. These reviews are intended to provide interested readers with information regarding the quality of the work -- and that's where an opinion is involved. It sounds like you've prejudged this novel according your dislike of the author and subject. How about an opinion of the book? Was it well written? Most certainly. Was it informative? You bet. Would I recommend it to someone who didn't hate the author or the Kennedys and who wanted a riviting account of American history -- it's ups and downs and good and bad? That's what the stars represent.

4 out of 5 stars A selection of Nobel and Enriching thoughts.......2007-09-03

Poetry is something different for each of us. We are touched by different things at different times. This book lets us find, in one place, a cross section of what is considered "famous". It is likely that we will find what touches us from among the selections. Robert Cook the editor says in the preface that the purpose of the book is to enrich, ennoble, and encourage. He adds that it is also for convenience. Perhaps it is a search engine for what you might be looking for or have forgotten in poetry.

English and American poems comprise over half of those presented. Most are indeed "famous" but some are a surprise.
I found one poem by Robert Frost. Not the one that I liked best. I also found two poems by Alfred Tennyson and was not surprised to find either of them. It proves to be very interesting to fine which of each author's writings made this list of 101. At the end of the book you will find an "Index" and an "Index of Authors". Maybe you will want to read it from beginning to end or maybe you will want to find your favorite author. Either way this is a book that you will come back to over and over. I liked what Longfellow said in the first verse of "The Builders", the first poem in this collection.

"All are architects of Fate,
Working in these walls of Time;
Some with massive deeds and great,
Some with ornaments of rhyme."

He must have read the other 100 Famous Poems

5 out of 5 stars My favourite poetry anthology.......2007-07-27

I have never been a big fan of modern poetry and did not own any poetry books until a friend showed me this one. It is a collection of truly outstanding poems, each of which is skillfully crafted and well chosen. The poetic techniques are always masterful and the styles very diverse. What unifies the volume is the generally serious tone of its contributors with respect to the subjects they have chosen - love, loss, patriotism/sacrifice, justice, etc. There are minor quibbles (too many poems about trees, the inclusion of non-poetic pieces) but these cannot detract from a book that both conneissures and neophytes can both enjoy. My friend who showed it to me keep two dozen copies to use as graduation presents and thankyou gifts; given the low price and high quality of this book, I plan to do the same.

5 out of 5 stars A Favorite.......2006-12-12

A copy of this book was in our household from the time I can remember. It was lost in a fire and I soon found myself looking for a copy to replace it. Many of these poems are wonderful read aloud which I did with my grandaughter who is now 16 and has her own copy. I have given several copies as gifts over the years and would never want to be without mine. As another reviewer mentioned, it is a history lesson, and more. I have many poetry books, but none I enjoy as much as this one.

4 out of 5 stars A good collection but a few "Greats" are missing.......2006-04-07

I realize that making the choices as to who and what should go into a collection like this - is very hard. I think this is a great book but I guess that I would not be able to limit the title to "One hundred and One." Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars MOTIVATOR.......2005-12-18

1957-discharged from the army. No longer a callow youth but lacking motivation, I gave university life a whirl. I bought the book on a whim and I still have it by my bedside. It's a delightful collection that early on helped provide the spark I needed to continue my education. I discovered I knew little of the world. Who the heck was Wolsey? The Spires of Oxford, the Boar War? Where is the encyclopedia?

Book Description

A longtime investigative journalist uncovers one of the great untold stories of twentieth–century international intrigue, and the secrets it has held 㟵ntil now.

Shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis and Bobby Kennedy, two of the world's richest and most powerful men, disliked one another from the moment they first met. Over several decades, their intense mutual hatred only grew, as did their desire to compete for the affections of Jackie, the keeper of the Camelot flame.

Now, this shocking work by seasoned investigative journalist Peter Evans reveals the culmination of the Kennedy–Onassis–Kennedy love triangle: Onassis was at the heart of the plot to kill Bobby Kennedy. Nemesis meticulously traces Onassis's trail – his connections, the way that he financed the assassination – and includes a confession kept secret for three decades. With its deeply nuanced portraits of the major figures and events that shaped an era, Nemesis is a work that will not soon be forgotten.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You won't be disappointed...........2007-06-25

Fans of Callas, Onassis, & Kennedy(s) should embrace this book a.s.a.p. Peter Evans does a wonderful job. What an extraordinary story that is told. I couldn't put this book down for several weeks. Even after I've finished it, it inspires re-reading. Highly recommended!!

3 out of 5 stars Confusing.......2007-06-09

I thought that this book would be interesting to me because I like the Kennedy family and am interested in conspiracy theories, but I was wrong. This book is pretty good, but it is really confusing with so many people involved that sometimes it is hard to keep straight who this person is and what they did.

5 out of 5 stars Rumors and Questions Answered.......2007-03-24

Those who find a conspiracy in every world event will be satisfied with the well-researched and well-written account of the possible involvement of Aristotle Onassis in the assassination of Robert Kennedy. As to the oft-asked question as to why Jacqueline Kennedy would want to marry the Greek tycoon, it is answered with a new understanding of the greed and lust that drove these compelling personalities. The narrative fairly jumps from the pages of this very fast read. Even the footnotes are fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars Whoa!.......2006-05-04

What a fascinating, very well written book! It seemed every page had a juicy morsel or two and really opened my eyes into what was really going on during the last months of John Kennedy's life and why Jackie married Aristotle Onassis. As a teenager, I was shocked she'd married someone who obviously wasn't a friend of the United States. But Peter Evans portrays Onassis as someone so fascinating, even desirable in his "bulldog" approach to women, maybe money wasn't the only reason. Then again, once you read this book your whole image of "Camelot" and the "Holy Widow" will never be the same.

5 out of 5 stars Review for Seller.......2006-01-15

The book came quickly and in exactly the condition stated: like brand new. Will definitely look this seller up again next time I'm shopping for books.

5 out of 5 stars Funniest. Novel. Ever.......2006-02-16

I read this book ages ago and enjoyed it completely. Chris Elliott is one of the most underrated comics around and this book is proof. Virtually nobody has read it, but everyone who has loves it.

5 out of 5 stars Chris is still deepy & achingly in luv with Pamela Sue Martin.......2005-12-16

And that's the reason Chris interpolated THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE into DADDY'S BOY. Pamela Sue was at the apogee of her scrumptiousness in 1973. In the squeezy-wet summer of her sweet goosey youth. Don't be fooled by Chris's distractionary references to "the leggy blonde in the wedgie sandals". Carol Lynley means nothing to Chris. There's only you, Pamela Sue. Only you.

If Bobby Darin was a triple-threat, Bobby Elliott was a megatuple-threat: "When I entered his world, he was at his height. You couldn't turn on the radio without hearing his deep manly baritone belting out a lilting romantic lullaby. You couldn't go to the movies without seeing his rock-solid shoulders and receding hairline fill the screen, and you couldn't go to the supermarket without seeing his cherubic face emblazoned on the labels of Bob Elliott's Famous Salad Dressing, or Bob Elliott's Popcorn, Chewing Tobacco, and Turkey Franks. He monopolized the talk shows and gossip columns. His appearance could turn a boring party into an 'event'. He composed, he performed, he lifted weights, and he painted all the murals in the lobby of the RCA Building. He was King of Comedy, King of Drama, and Teen Beat's Hunk-of-the-Month at age 53."

Let it also be known that Chris shamelessly borrowed a bit of shtick from THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE: "He [Wulfgang Herbert] also felt that since there were no right angles in nature, there should be no right angles in anything man-made, including architecture. Every attempt at constructing a Herbert school without right angles met with disaster before the school could be completed, and so classes were held outside, literally on 68th and Lexington."

Chris appropriated Monty Python's Trim-Jeans joke with complete peace of mind: "Still later that night, with my mind lost in the parking lot of the Bates Motel, my nostrils filled with the familiar Mum aroma. I woke immediately, and there, standing in the doorway, was Daddy. He was naked except for a pair of inflatable undershorts. (The undershorts were something he had seen advertised on television. Supposedly, if you wore them to bed, you could lose weight in your sleep.) He stood swaying in the doorway for an eternity. Then, in a hushed voice, almost a whisper, he implored: 'If you eat spaghetti, please watch out for the bay leaves!' He turned and was gone as suddenly as he had appeared."

But the best reason to hate Chris is for the following passage: "The twins, A and B, shaved their heads, moved to Iran, and opened a chain of Bob's Big Boys, and the rest of the thugs were at Stanford Medical School trying to come up with a cure for those obnoxious people who insist on closing their eyes whenever they talk."

It just so happens that some of those eye-closers are thinking of Pamela Sue Martin. And there's nothing wrong with that. Isn't that right, Chris.

I laughed my ass off, non-stop, from cover to cover.

Any questions?

5 out of 5 stars you should be so lucky to die reading this book.......2003-10-11

Chris Elliott had, prior to writing Daddy's Boy, proven himself to be THE interpreter of tortured genius Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Reading this tour-de-force gives us an insight into how one so seemingly insouciant as Mr. Elliott could render such pain so forcibly yet tenderly as he did in his one man show where he played the presidential paraplegic and tempest-tossed castaway. For we see that his own life has been a nightmare picaresque, a bob-and-weave in the eternal boxing match with the father. Daddy's Boy is a roller coaster ride through the bowels of hell from start to finish. If you liked Richard III, The Epic of Gilgamesh, and A Night Without Armor, you will run naked through your mother's boudoir due to the thrill you'll receive from Daddy's Boy.

While I didn't harbor hopes that this cookbook would divulge a secret so commercially-valuable as Famous Dave's BBQ sauce recipes (it doesn't at all, and in fact makes a big fuss at how 'important' it is to guard your secret recipes), I DID hope that it would teach a bit about the flavors involved in the type of food I usually tend to associate with images of New Orleans, Chicago, and all the small town in between. I had hoped it would be at least on par with one of Bobby Flay's books on grilling (incidentally, I'll point out that I heartily support Bobby Flay's openness with his recipes, and his understanding that even if he gives me his exact recipe for Mesa Grill BBQ sauce--which he does in one of his books--my version of it will never taste the same as his).

This book does not offer any of that. I was sublimely disappointed when I opened it up to his 'famous' rib recipe and found that the 'recipe' called for several bottles of his "famous Dave's BBQ sauce". In my opinion, this isn't a recipe, it's a plug for a product. I had hoped to find some discussions about cooking techniques...slow-roasting, smoking, etc, but there is maybe a paragraph on this in one of the recipes, and it's ambiguous at best. What it DOES offer is a small handful of recipes slathered with a thick layer of recipe titles like "Jumpin' Jukin' And Jivin' All-Day Beef Brisket" (requires 3 bottles of Famous Dave's BBQ sauce), an overwhelming amount of photos of various Famous Dave's storefronts, and a cover laden with claims of this book being voted "best in america" for recipes.

If your idea of making 'homemade baked beans' involves buying a can of bakes beans and a bottle of bbq sauce, mixing the two together, and calling it a day, this is the book for you. If you're a food network junkie, if you know what Alinea or El Bulli are, or if you see value in cooking from scratch rather than using preprocessed ingredients, you're probably best to seek elsewhere. I wish I could point to a better cookbook on BBQ-ing, because I know finding one is like searching for a needle in a haystack, but I'm hoping it'll suffice it to recommend against buying this cook.

5 out of 5 stars Great recipes.......2007-03-12

Dave Anderson has taken the time to give his insight into the history of Famous Dave's. It makes for some interesting reading, but the real gem of this book is the recipes. The bread pudding is sinful. You have to make it at least once in your life.

Christmas time is a real challenge, especially when your "little boys" are
all over 40. This is a great book for the diehard barbecuer or the novice.
They loved it, and Mom is once again the giver of all things cool.

This is a wonderful cook book. Every recipe I have tried turned out perfect. An honest to goodness great book. Every kitchen needs one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Eats.......2005-03-19

I like my cookbooks. My other favorite cookbooks would be from Paul Prudhomme. This cookbook was very helpful in creating a good BBQ rub and smoking ribs and pork shoulder. I even had to upgrade my smoker. The pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw and homemade sauce is the best sandwich I have ever made. It makes me want to fire up the smoker and get cooking. I have smoked more than I ever have since acquiring this book. Must have for the BBQ smoker in the family!

Product Description

`History: Fiction or Science? Chronology 2` is the second volume of the most explosive and astounding tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by rock solid scientific data. The book is easy and pleasant to read; it is well-illustrated, contains hundreds of charts, graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays. You will be amazed to discover: - That the chronology universally accepted today and taken for granted is simply wrong; - That ALL methods of dating of ancient sources and artefacts known today are erroneous or non-exact; - That there is not a single document that could be reliably dated earlier than the XIth century; The Author refers to the Middle Ages as the “Antiquity” and proves mutual superimposition of the Second and the Third Roman Empire, both of which become identified as the respective kingdoms of Israel and Judah. Furthermore, he asserts that the famous reform of the Occidental Church in the XI century by “Pope Gregory Hildebrand” was the reflection of the XII century reforms of Byzantine emperor Andronicus who in his turn identifies with Jesus Christ. The Trojan war counted by Homer happened only as late as of the XIII century A.D. and the great poet actually lived in XIV century A.D. No stone in history of Antiquity is left unturned. Literally. This book is the beginning of a major correction to the chronology we live with.

I don't care what other people say of this book. Those affirmig it's fake, they hadn't ever read it. Or have some special reasons to do so. "Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see..." This book won't make you feel comfortable. It'll make you feel free. It'll make you feel you're "not the only one" to feel you'd been lied to for centuries.

5 out of 5 stars Suprise! Suprise!.......2007-03-22

Here is a serie of books which turns "the whole world" upside down. I learned a lot of it and I hope that a new book from A.T. Fomenko will follow very quick. A absolute must for everybody who is interested in history or even a little bit from it.

5 out of 5 stars Prescient St Augustine?.......2006-02-05

We can so far divide the New Chronology into the following three parts:

a) The verifiable theory that proves consensual chronology wrong with the aid of astronomy, statistics and mathematics;

b) The new chronology hypothesis based on a new understanding of known historical facts and the most likely logical explanation of the most obvious inconsistencies inherent in the official version of history;

c) The history conjectures, that is experimental historical reconstructions based on assumptions that the authors believe to make sense in the light of their research and linguistic parallels - void of ironclad factual support to date.

Fomenko's theory complies with the most rigid scientific standards as a whole:

It gives a coherent explanation of what we already know.

- It is consistent: independent lines of inquiry all lead to the same conclusion.

- The predictions it makes are confirmed empirically.

Fomenko goes by the following axioms:

- Chronology is the basis of history;

- Human evolution has always been linear, gradual and irreversible;

- The "cyclic" nature of human civilization is a myth, likewise all the gaps, duplicates, "dark ages" and "renaissances" that we know from consensual history;

- The accumulation of geographical knowledge as reflected in cartography is a gradual and irreversible process;

- The chronological distance between a given manuscript and the events described therein is proportional to the amount of distortions it contains;

- There is no "useless" information in authentic ancient sources.

Why the mainstream historians do not shower mathematician Academician Dr.Prof Fomenko with thanks and laurels?

The Russians:

Because Fomenko asserts that there was no such thing as the Tartar and Mongol invasion followed by three centuries of slavery, providing a formidable body of documental evidence to prove his assertion. The so-called "Tartars and Mongols" were the actual ancestors of the modern Russians, living in a bilingual state with Arabic spoken as freely as Russian. The ancient Russian state was governed by a double structure of civil and military authorities. The hordes were actually professional armies with a tradition of lifelong conscription (the recruitment being the so-called "blood tax"). Their "invasions" were punitive operations against the regions that attempted tax evasion. Fomenko proves that Russian history as we know it today is a blatant forgery concocted by a host of German scientists brought to Russia by the usurper dynasty of the Romanovs, whose ascension to the throne was the result of coup d'état, charged with the mission of making their reign look legitimate. Fomenko proves Ivan the Terrible to be a collation of four rulers, no less. They represented the two rival dynasties - the legitimate rulers and the ambitious upstarts. The winner took it all! Over some 30 years of controversy, Russian historians have made a most remarkable transition - they were initially accusing the young mathematician Fomenko of anticommunist dissident activity and attempts to deface the historical legacy of Soviet Russia; nowadays the middle-aged mathematician is accused of adhering to "pro-communist Russian nationalism" and defacing the proud historical legacy of Great Russia.

The Westerners:

Because Fomenko blows consensual Russian history to smithereens, successfully removing a crucial cornerstone from underneath the otherwise impeccable edifice of World History. Fomenko adds insult to injury, wiping out one by one the Ancient Rome (the foundation of Rome in Italy is dated to the XIV century A. D.), the Ancient Greece and its numerous poleis, which he identifies as the mediaeval crusader settlements on the territory of Greece, and the Ancient Egypt (the pyramids of Giza become dated to the XI-XV century A. D. and identified as the royal cemetery of the Global "Mongolian" Empire, no less). The civilization of the Ancient Egypt is irrefutably dated to the XII-XV century A. D. with the aid of the ancient Egyptian horoscopes cut in stone. He was the first one to decipher and date all such horoscopes, coming up with mediaeval dates in every case. English historians rage at the suggestion that the history of Ancient England was de facto a Byzantine import transplanted to the English soil by the fugitive Byzantine nobility. To reward the English historians who consider themselves the true scribes of World History, the cover of the present book portrays Tintoretto's Jesus Christ crucified on the Big Ben.

The Chinese:

Because Fomenko wipes out the Ancient History of China outright. No such thing. Full point. The compilation of the so-called Ancient Chinese History is reliably datable to the XVII-XVIII century only. It is perfectly recognizable as the Ancient European history, reworked and transcribed in hieroglyphs as yet another historical transplantation, this time performed on the Chinese soil by the loving Jesuit hands. The Chinese are the next in line to go berserk. Chinese history is inevitably bound to get both more ancient and more eventful, proportionally to the growing involvement of China in the world affairs. Chinese historians will keep on finding valid proof of prehistoric Chinese spaceflights until the Politburo orders them to shut up.

The Arabs:

Too bad. Islam with all its key figures is datable to XV-XVI century A. D. Arabic historians may find consolation in the crucial historical role of the Ottoman Empire in the XVI-XVII century. The trouble is that this empire was initially a Christian state, with Hagia Sophia identifiable as Temple of Solomon, according to Fomenko! We can only guess if the acquisition of Alexander the Great (a Macedonian and a Christian) as the founder of the Muslim World Empire will make Fomenko's theories more acceptable to the Arabic mainstream. He certainly does not spare any holy cows at all, claiming The Stone of Qa'Aba in Mecca to contain the lost Arch of the Covenant.

The Divinity:

Despite of reiterated statement that his theory is all about chronology and not Religion, Fomenko stirs up a whole condominium of wasp nests. His collection of anathemas, fatwa, and other condemnations from all parties concerned is already considerable. Little wonder, considering that the history of religions à la Fomenko looks as follows: the pre-Christian period (before the XI century and JC), Bacchic Christianity (XI-XII century, before and after JC), JC Christianity (XII-XVI century) and its subsequent mutations into Orthodox Christianity, the Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, and so on.

According to Fomenko we know strictly NOTHING about the events that predate the X century A. D.

St Augustin was prescient when he spoke unto us: "be wary of mathematicians, particularly when they speak the truth."

4 out of 5 stars Something of a disappointment.......2005-09-09

After having read the first volume of this expected series of 7 volumes I was triggered by the thesis of these authors that ancient Greek and Roman history did in fact take place in the Middle Ages. So I started studying medieval history of the Middle East - also known as Islamic history - to find out if the opponents of the ancient Greeks and Romans - the Acheamenid Persians, Sassanids, Scythians, Egyptians, etc. - also have their duplicates in medieval history. My search was disappointing: none of the many medieval Islamic dynasties seemed to correspond to the ancient middle eastern rulers.

However, I did find a close correspondence between Herodotus' Persian kings and medieval events:

- the defeat and capture of an Anatolian king - the Lydian Croesus - by the Persian conqueror Cyrus is identical to the defeat and capture of another Anatolian king - sultan Bayezid - by the Asian/Mongol conqueror Tamerlane;
- the Persian conquest of Egypt by the cruel tyrant Cambyses reds almost exactly as the Ottoman conquest of Egypt by Selim the Grim (note the nickname!);
- Darius the Lawgiver of the Persian Empire looks very much alike to Sulayman the Magnificent, the Lawgiver in Islamic history;
- Xerxes, whose main claim to fame is to be defeated by the Greeks at the naval battle of Salamis, looks like Selim II (the Sot) whose main claim to fame is to be defeated by a Spanish-Italian alliance at the naval battle of Lepanto.

I should have expected Fomenko et al. to arrive at similar conclusions, however, they claim that the Persian kings are the alter egos of the Angevin kings of Sicily whose biographies do not contain the exploits of the Persian kings.

The similiarities I indicate lead to the conclusion that Herodotus must have written his Histories at the close of the 16th century. But this is extremely late, given that Herodotus is "the Father of History", so therefore all other "ancient" histories must have been fabricated even later. Yet, the founders of modern chronology - Scaliger and Petavius - laid their foundations also at the close of the 16th century and had the full corpus of ancient histories already at their disposal.

It seems to me that Fomenko has to address these inconsistencies, maybe in the forthcoming 5 volumes?

Another critique of their book is that the correspondencies between different rulers are often based on a superficial comparison of the biographies; upon a more thorough comparison many details appear that do not correspond at all.

Finally, the authors rely heavily on the works of Gregorovius (1821-1891!!) - his medieval histories of Rome and Athens - as the source of medieval history; these works are - at least in the West - hoplessly outdated and have been superceded by more up-to-date works (for instance, Julius Norwich's trilogy on Byzantine history is not even cited).

5 out of 5 stars Romulus courts Helen, Paris founds Rome, Moses goes to Troy.........2005-07-30

If you agree with Fomenko that Roman chronology is basically the foundation of the entire edifice of global chronology; you would also certainly agree that despite its numerous gaps and inconsistencies, Roman history is the best-documented field of ancient history, and thus a reference scale. But how well is the actual date of the Eternal City's foundation known?

Firstly, Rome is supposed to have been founded by the Trojans who had to flee after the fall of Troy. Some claim Rome to have been founded by Aeneas and Ulysses shortly after Troy had fallen; others are of the opinion that there was an entire dynasty that ruled for 500 years between the fall of Troy and the foundation of Rome.

Well, that's just an innocent 500 years long misunderstanding compared with what heretic Fomenko says, asserts, proves in his second volume: Second Roman Empire, Third Roman Empire, Biblical Kingdom of Israel, Biblical Kingdom of Judah, Holy Roman Empire are stories about basically same events, written from different points of view at different times. The underlying events have actually taken place during xii-xv cy. These histories have been written and perfected by multitude of highly talented humanist and clerical writers of xiii-xvi cy disguised as "ancients" with glorious names like Homer, Pluto, Thucydides etc..Chronology 2.0 beta..

Historians are kindly invited to report the bugs.

Sometimes it seems like every standup comedian worth his or her salt just has to do the book thing, and you might feel that yet another warmed-over stage routine is the last thing you need taking up valuable bookshelf space. Jon Stewart's book will come as an extremely pleasant surprise. He eschews the standard standup patter and instead gives us 18 short comic essays in a variety of styles that recall the prose work of Woody Allen, only with a few more references to genitals. Stewart proves himself a remarkably nimble humorist with a sharp eye for parody, whether he's writing "A Very Hanson Christmas" or "Adolf Hitler: The Larry King Interview."

HITLER: ...Larry, look, I was a bad guy. No question. I hate that Hitler. The yelling, the finger pointing, I don't know ... I was a very angry guy.

KING: And this ... new Hitler?

HITLER: I get up at seven, have half a melon, do the jumble in the morning paper and then let the day take me where it will.... Me!! The inventor of the Blitzkrieg... When you stop having to control everything it's very freeing.

Stewart is not afraid to flirt with bad taste, in fact, some of the pieces in this collection do for "flirting with bad taste" what Bill Clinton did for "not having sexual relations." But it's wonderful to see an edgy comedian taking on the traditionally cozy genre of the humorous essay, creating work that combines the wit of Robert Benchley with the energy and attitude of the best modern standup. Naked Pictures of Famous People proves that Jon Stewart is as comfortable, and accomplished, in front of a word processor as he is in front of an audience. --Simon Leake

5 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny.......2007-10-10

This is a sophisticated night table book for people who like intelligent satire. It's sharp and, well, somewhat offensive. It's very politically incorrect.

There are some 20 well-written essays that start (mostly) in reality and end up somewhere totally outside of reality and strictly in the mind of the author. But a funny mind it is!

This is a clever, well-written and very funny book. If you enjoy the highest form of humor, this is a wonderful book to own and give as a gift.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars If you have a sense of humour, he brings the reason for having one!.......2007-09-26

Yes, i am an enthusiastic fan of Mr. Stewart - i call him "The Mark Twain of Our Time" - for good reason. I'll get killed for that, but trust me - Twain was as controversial in his time, and about the same amount smart.

This book pulls no punches. That is exactly the way punches are meant to be. Some of these punches even knock me back. No "Sacred Cow" remained un-slaughtered in the creation of this book.

You have been warned.

If you can take it - then get this book, and GET IT. This isn't as politically-focused as America - the Book, and so it might appeal to open-humoured persons less into that arena. I'm a fan of all of it - but this is refreshing and just as crammed full to bursting of actual unadulterated (adult) wit. Remember wit?

Jon does.

5 out of 5 stars It's Time for Prayer: Where's Cap'n Crunch?.......2007-09-03

I'm a 17 year old girl and this is one of THE best books I've ever read! I am a HUGE fan of The Daily Show and Jon Stewart, so I was pretty sure I'd like this book, and I was SO freakin right. It's hilarious! And so accurate! Jon Stewart is brilliant with these essays. It normally takes me a while to read a book, but I finished this book really fast. I couldn't stop reading it! I actually got yelled at a couple of times in class for reading it while the teachers were talking, but it was so funny! I highly recommend this book to ANYONE that doesn't mind a little offensive humor. I dunno why people think it's mean. It's not like Jon Stewart is saying offensive things about them. He's talking about well known celebrities, and is OBVIOUSLY kidding. I am so glad I bought this book.

4 out of 5 stars Don't read if you are famous.......2007-08-23

I really enjoy the humor in this book, though I can see why some might not. It is the kind of thing that you read and think, "Is it okay to laugh at that?" The answer, of course, is yes. I am sure that JFK is up in Kennedy Heaven (like normal Heaven, but bigger) laughing about the jokes in this book.

2 out of 5 stars had a moment.......2007-08-21

Just as the title of this review states, that's all it had, just A moment. I really only laughed once throughout the whole thing. As I was reading it I could feel the disgusted look on my face, as if I was watching a car accident. I wanted it to be funny, but it just wasn't. I read the excerpt that Amazon gave on it, and that one bit was funny, just that ONE bit. Not even the rest of the Hitler interview was that funny. I tried to finish it but I simply couldn't. I tried to give it two stars, to be nice, but I just couldn't, so, for it making me laugh but only once, I give it one star.

Just what kind of book is Let Us Now Praise Famous Men? It contains many things: poems; confessional reveries; disquisitions on the proper way to listen to Beethoven; snippets of dialogue, both real and imagined; a lengthy response to a survey from the Partisan Review; exhaustive catalogs of furniture, clothing, objects, and smells. And then there are Walker Evans's famously stark portraits of depression-era sharecroppers--photographs that both stand apart from and reinforce James Agee's words.

Assigned to do a story for Fortune magazine about sharecroppers in the Deep South, Agee and Evans spent four weeks living with a poor white tenant family, winning the Burroughs's trust and immersing themselves in a sharecropper's daily existence. Given a first draft of the resulting article, the editors at Fortune quite understandably threw up their hands--as did several other editors who subsequently worked with a later book-length manuscript. The writing was contrary. It refused to accommodate itself to the reader, and at times it positively bristled with hostility. (What other book could take Marx as the epigraph and then announce: "These words are quoted here to mislead those who will be misled by them"?) Response to the book was puzzled or unfriendly, and Let Us Now Praise Famous Men sputtered out of print only a few short years after its publication. It took the 1960s, and a vogue for social justice, to bring Agee's masterwork the audience it deserved.

Yet the book is far more interesting--aesthetically and morally--than the sort of guilty-liberal tract for which it is often mistaken. On an existential level, Agee's text is a deeply felt examination of what it means to suffer, to struggle to live in spite of suffering. On a personal level, it is the painful, beautifully written portrait of one man's obsession. In its collaboration with Evans's photographs, the book is also a groundbreaking experiment in form. In the end, however, it is more than merely the sum of its parts. Let Us Now Praise Famous Men is, quite simply, a book unlike any other, simmering with anger and beauty and mystery. --Mary Park

Book Description

In the summer of 1936, James Agee and Walker Evans set out on assignment for Fortune magazine to explore the daily lives of sharecroppers in the South. Their journey would prove an extraordinary collaboration and a watershed literary event when in 1941 LET US NOW PRAISE FAMOUS MEN was first published to enormous critical acclaim. This unsparing record of place, of the people who shaped the land, and of the rhythm of their lives was called intensely moving and unrelentingly honest, and is "renowned for its fusion of social conscience and artistic radicality" (New York Times). Today it stands as a poetic tract of its time, recognized by the New York Public Library as one of the most influential books of the twentieth century. With an elegant new design as well as a sixty-four-page photographic prologue of Evans's classic images, reproduced from archival negatives, this sixtieth anniversary edition reintroduces the legendary author and photographer to a new generation.

3 out of 5 stars If nothing else, certainly brilliant and thought-provoking.......2006-09-16

Let us Now Praise Famous Men, in all its poetry and prose, reminds me of an epic, like the Hindu Mahabharata or Homer's Iliad and Odyssey. The lyrical narrative reveals just as much, if not more about Agee, than his subjects. His writing style excludes his subjects as readers.

His prose, which tends to be lofty and cerebral, is also beautiful and brilliant. But, I often wondered, who he was
writing for? The New Yorker audience? The distance in his observations often left me feeling cold. I imagine these hardworking sharecroppers exhibiting some joy, some evidence of warmth, of hope. But I had difficulty finding it in Agee's voice.

The length of Agee's sentences and paragraphs were long, each containing an entire scene, and I labored through them, hoping sleep would not steal me from a passage I might not finish. It was as though Agee too, was afraid sleep would come and steal him from his mission, and so kept hacking away at each sentence, adding commas and colons and semi-colons, lingering his thoughts across the page.

Whatever level of consciousness Agee existed, I could not hang with him for any more than a couple of sentences, as I would fall off the page and have to find my way back into the scene. Where was I? You get the picture...

Agee also uses parenthesis and colons, often not giving his parenthesis a mate: (This struck me as rather unusual and often, cold and detached--more like a voyeur. Did he fabricate his own method of communication using punctuation or was this being done elsewhere at the time? I felt left out of his thoughts when he did this, like when two people are communicating via sign language and you can't make out a word they're saying. Was he doing this in a way to urge us to "think," to stretch beyond the ordinary conventions and try something on that is foreign and unfamiliar, like his subjects and their hardship?

3 out of 5 stars Topic great, writers not so great........2006-05-27

The eloquence of composition surely necessitated infinite use of superlatives and verbs, resulting in a requisite painstaking remostrance to the reader, thus fettering the effusion and disembogulation of the document. In other words, wouldn't it have been better to just leave all of the fluff out of the book and just write as if the reader is someone other than the Queen of England? If you can weed through all of excessive use poems and verbs, it's a halfway decent book

4 out of 5 stars I thought I hated it at points, but I've never been able to get it out of my head........2005-09-23

This book is an amazing work of art. At times it's baffling, and at times almost impertinent--like when the author decides to describe every object in an entire home, and yet in all these things and in all the conflicting emotions it evokes, it creates a mood and a feeling and a setting that will seep into your skin and fog your brain for months.
The writing is beautiful, the story it tells--of poor, sharecropping, depression-era families--is heartbreaking, and the experience of reading about it all is like a baptism by fire. This book just might re-wire your brain.
I think this is a much better read than Agee's "A Death in the Family," and that one won the Pulitzer Prize. Read this, for sure.
I read it on a bus trip across Guatemala, and the way Agee's descriptions of the old southern poverty fit the poor little towns full of Guatemalan coffee pickers was uncanny.
Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, and let us start with James Agee.

UPDATE: It's years later, and this book has never stopped haunting me. I think of it almost daily. If I were to review it today, I would definitely give it Five Stars.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2005-08-05

Excellent editon of this wonderful, classic work. A series of visual and verbal snapshots of the South as a third world country, the South of the 1930's.

3 out of 5 stars A Puzzle to be piece together...........2004-04-12

James Agee's book on the sharecroppers of the American south during the great depression is a book not to be taken lightly. I read this book for a college english class and I can honestly say that most people in the course including myself are confused by Agee's intent and purpose. Agee's highly lyrical and philosophical tone allows a deep analysis into the question of human existence in the depression south. Yet, the very scope and difficulty of his subject is expressed in his confused, perhaps confusing writing. There are lonely moments of insight stacked alongside pages of seemingly irrelevant and baseless speculation. I say seemingly because each time I re-read the passage I find that Agee's words have quite a bit more meaning than I had originally found. This book is not a novel, not journalism but a puzzle which Agee could not piece together. Only with time and care can the reader hope to understand the frustratingly complex yet real message of Agee's work.
