Jacob Jankowski says: "I am ninety. Or ninety-three. One or the other." At the beginning of Water for Elephants, he is living out his days in a nursing home, hating every second of it. His life wasn't always like this, however, because Jacob ran away and joined the circus when he was twenty-one. It wasn't a romantic, carefree decision, to be sure. His parents were killed in an auto accident one week before he was to sit for his veterinary medicine exams at Cornell. He buried his parents, learned that they left him nothing because they had mortgaged everything to pay his tuition, returned to school, went to the exams, and didn't write a single word. He walked out without completing the test and wound up on a circus train. The circus he joins, in Depression-era America, is second-rate at best. With Ringling Brothers as the standard, Benzini Brothers is far down the scale and pale by comparison.

Water for Elephants is the story of Jacob's life with this circus. Sara Gruen spares no detail in chronicling the squalid, filthy, brutish circumstances in which he finds himself. The animals are mangy, underfed or fed rotten food, and abused. Jacob, once it becomes known that he has veterinary skills, is put in charge of the "menagerie" and all its ills. Uncle Al, the circus impresario, is a self-serving, venal creep who slaps people around because he can. August, the animal trainer, is a certified paranoid schizophrenic whose occasional flights into madness and brutality often have Jacob as their object. Jacob is the only person in the book who has a handle on a moral compass and as his reward he spends most of the novel beaten, broken, concussed, bleeding, swollen and hungover. He is the self-appointed Protector of the Downtrodden, and... he falls in love with Marlena, crazy August's wife. Not his best idea.

The most interesting aspect of the book is all the circus lore that Gruen has so carefully researched. She has all the right vocabulary: grifters, roustabouts, workers, cooch tent, rubes, First of May, what the band plays when there's trouble, Jamaican ginger paralysis, life on a circus train, set-up and take-down, being run out of town by the "revenooers" or the cops, and losing all your hooch. There is one glorious passage about Marlena and Rosie, the bull elephant, that truly evokes the magic a circus can create. It is easy to see Marlena's and Rosie's pink sequins under the Big Top and to imagine their perfect choreography as they perform unbelievable stunts. The crowd loves it--and so will the reader. The ending is absolutely ludicrous and really quite lovely. --Valerie Ryan

Book Description

Though he may not speak of them, the memories still dwell inside Jacob Jankowski's ninety-something-year-old mind. Memories of himself as a young man, tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. Memories of a world filled with freaks and clowns, with wonder and pain and anger and passion; a world with its own narrow, irrational rules, its own way of life, and its own way of death. The world of the circus: to Jacob it was both salvation and a living hell.
Jacob was there because his luck had run out—orphaned and penniless, he had no direction until he landed on this locomotive "ship of fools." It was the early part of the Great Depression, and everyone in this third-rate circus was lucky to have any job at all. Marlena, the star of the equestrian act, was there because she fell in love with the wrong man, a handsome circus boss with a wide mean streak. And Rosie the elephant was there because she was the great gray hope, the new act that was going to be the salvation of the circus; the only problem was, Rosie didn't have an act—in fact, she couldn't even follow instructions. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.
Surprising, poignant, and funny, Water for Elephants is that rare novel with a story so engrossing, one is reluctant to put it down; with characters so engaging, they continue to live long after the last page has been turned; with a world built of wonder, a world so real, one starts to breathe its air.

4 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2007-10-10

Stayed up all night to get this amazing book finished. Was an excellent read, and now, its being passed around my office to spread the joy with others! :)

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book but.........2007-10-10

First off, the imagery in this book is amazing. The pictures painted by words are so vivid that I felt like I was watching the action on screen.

The story is set in the 1930s and follows Jacob Jankowski, a vetrinary school dropout, and the few months he spends working for a circus (Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show On Earth). Jacob is exposed to the harsh lifestyle of a travelling circus. He meets Marlena, who is a performer, and falls in love. The only problem is that she is already married to August, the equestrian director (who hired Jacob in the first place).

The central element of the book however, is the circus itself. The reader gets a look into the inner workings of show, the characters that work for it and this is done in a very dextrous way. Gruen makes the reader understand the technicalities of circus terminology and life without spelling out definitions. Her insight into the characters (with a few exceptions) is also very interesting. I found the beginning part of the book fascinating as the 90 or 93 year old Jankowski reflects on how things change with age.

The criticism I have is that certain charcters are somewhat faceless. I found this to be true of Marlena. This makes her relationship with Jacob seem contrived and their interactions cliched. The dialogue between them towards the end is predictable. Also, the character of August, I felt, could have been better developed.

Overall, this is a fine book and I had fun reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Water for Elephants.......2007-10-09

This book is a good read. It is interesting on several levels--the reflections and remembrances of an old man; life in an assisted living facility; treatment of the elderly; real life reflections of life in a circus during the depression. For those who love the circus, it brings the behind the scenes events of a circus to life and makes us remember the times when the circus came rolling into town on a train, with the requisite circus parade of clowns, elephants, lions, etc. Sara Gruen's a good story teller.

5 out of 5 stars Glad I didn't turn it down.......2007-10-09

I have seen this book on the best seller list for a long time now. I would read the reviews here on amazon, pick it up in the bookstore only to put it down again, thinking this just isn't my type of book. A few weeks ago I was talking with a collegue about recent books we have read. She told me she just finished Water for Elephants. Usually we like the same sort of books, so I had to ask her what she thought, I told her I just never bought it because it seemed so not interesting. She encouraged me to read it, she said it was wonderful.

Well, she was right! It was amazing. It read like a true story, and I am sure the author did her research. This book really made you feel for the main character, in current time and his past with the circus. It was sad at times, but also funny and thoughtful. I read it in less than a week and it was one of those books that although you coudn't wait to see what happened, you didn't want it to end.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story; expertly told.......2007-10-09

Water for Elephants is a compelling story told from the memory of a ninety-one (or ninety-three)year-old man named Jacob Jankowski. The story begins as Jacob prepares to sit for his veterinary exams at Cornell University. He receives word that his parents have been killed in a car accident and things go downhill from there. He ends up as part of a circus and the next three-and-a-half months are mostly a living hell, except for Marlena.

The story goes back and forth between the present time in the "assisted-living" home where Jacob resides and his memories of the past. His children/grandchildren/great grandchildren take turns visiting him, but first-born son, Simon, misses the most important day of all. In the end, this misstep creates for Jacob, and the reader, a most satisfying end to a moving and heartwarming life story. (A bonus in this book is what the reader learns about circus life in the early part of the 20th century, most of which is pretty nasty.)

As I care for my aged mother in her home, I am very grateful that we have been able to keep her here. This book provides a perspective from the viewpoint of the very elderly, who, while not as quick on all fronts as they once were, are still thinking, feeling beings.

Book Description

Thirty years ago two sisters disappeared from a shopping mall. Their bodies were never found and those familiar with the case have always been tortured by these questions: How do you kidnap two girls? Who—or what—could have lured the two sisters away from a busy mall on a Saturday afternoon without leaving behind a single clue or witness?

Now a clearly disoriented woman involved in a rush-hour hit-and-run claims to be the younger of the long-gone Bethany sisters. But her involuntary admission and subsequent attempt to stonewall investigators only deepens the mystery. Where has she been? Why has she waited so long to come forward? Could her abductor truly be a beloved Baltimore cop? There isn't a shred of evidence to support her story, and every lead she gives the police seems to be another dead end—a dying, incoherent man, a razed house, a missing grave, and a family that disintegrated long ago, torn apart not only by the crime but by the fissures the tragedy revealed in what appeared to be the perfect household.

In a story that moves back and forth across the decades, there is only one person who dares to be skeptical of a woman who wants to claim the identity of one Bethany sister without revealing the fate of the other. Will he be able to discover the truth?

3 out of 5 stars Maybe Not Your Best Introduction to Lippman.......2007-10-05

Well, it was mine, after having been encouraged by my wife, who has consistently enjoed all those before it. Afterwards I wasn't quite sure what all the excitement has been about. Frankly, I found this book middling: neither a stunning success nor a total flop. The author has a good ear for dialogue, yet for me the characters remained fairly flat. It's true that the narrative is non-linear, but I wasn't put off by that: the style she's trying to put over (I think) matches the "revenant" plot-pivot. If anything, the circular narration may strike some readers as a bit pretentious for what is, finally, a good evening's read.

3 out of 5 stars Fatal oversight?.......2007-09-24

I've read all of Lippman's books and enjoyed most of them. Her Tess Monaghan series always entertains. "What the Dead Know," however, isn't her strongest novel.

The story suffers from a non-linear narrative. Not only does it jump around in time, but since there are two missing girls and two grieving parents, there are essentially multiple protagonists. Too much mental whiplash forced me to skip to the end for the resolution about halfway through, then continue reading. Yes, it's cheating, but it did help. I understand how Lippman, knowing the whole story when she began to write it, wouldn't be able to see the degree of confusion her structure would cause. This becomes clear because re-reading the book is a whole different experience than the first read-through. One can appreciate the craftsmanship without being distracted by the disjointed timeline.

However, for me there's an even bigger problem. Without revealing too much of the plot, I'll just ask: In 1975, didn't police reports of missing children include in their descriptions identifying physical characteristics, such as moles, birthmarks, and obvious scars? Today I'm sure a parent would be asked for such details, to help identify a child (dead or alive). If police reports included this information in 1975, the case should have been solved sooner. Those of you who have read the book will know what I'm talking about. Do you agree?

I enjoy Lippman's work and I'll continue to read anything she gives us. However, this particular volume probably won't make my top-five list of her work. Not to worry, there are plenty of others. Check them out.

2 out of 5 stars in the loop.......2007-09-24

This was the first of Lippman's novels I've read. And I was so flummoxed by the going round and around construct...and when the police said they'd let someone in the loop...I desperately wanted to get out of the loop....I felt like a hampster in a wheel...around and around....going nowhere....I simply didn't enjoy it; the way it was constructed it didn't pack a punch!
The mystery wasn't interesting to me; nor were the characters, with the possible exception of Miriam...who wasn't memorable but at least passable..
It occurs to me..post women's lib...now that women have to make a living...they're pumping out unspiring drivel like their male counterparts....Equal opportunity rum amok I suppose..

5 out of 5 stars A moving literary mystery.......2007-09-23

I've never read any of Laura Lippman's books, so I didn't know her if her style was the usual crime and thriller fast-paced writing or the literary sort, sentences pregnant with suggestion and nuance. I'm happy to say that it's very literary: wonderful and evocative prose, carefully structured and flowing like a dream. The case involves the disappearance of two girls, two sisters taken during an outing at the mall. Years later, one of them reappears and throws the case wide open again. But she doesn't quite seem to be who she says she is (is anyone ever?). Lippman builds up characters like a sculptor, taking great pains to evince personality traits, histories, and deep, simmering emotions. Each character, not just the sisters, was interesting to me and there seemed a wealth of stories that could be told about each of them.

While reading, there were moments when I felt I was aloft and enjoying an excellent view of the community, gently and generously invited by the author to remain there watching, occasionally descending and moving close to the characters until the tempests of fear or rage within them became palpable. Despite what "knowingness" I thought I felt, my position was never higher than the level of the author herself, who knew everything, yet her voice was never smug. I was happy to observe and learn and guess.

And I managed to guess the identity of the mystery person because of a few small details. I'm glad I was right because I never get anything right when I guess the end of crime or mystery novels. Still, the circumstances behind the mystery were impossible to guess. But when all was revealed, it made perfect sense. Heartbreaking sense. I've never been so affected by the end of a book, especially a crime one.

Parts of the book reminded me of Alice Sebold's "The Lovely Bones," which focuses heavily on the family breaking down after the disappearance of a young woman. In "What the dead know," two girls are taken (who takes two? many characters ask), and the parents are changed forever. Change is both internal and external. Time alters the town as well, and these altered landscapes reminded me how malleable our own appearances are, whether by our own hand or those of time and circumstance.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Psychological Drama from Lippman.......2007-09-22

I read a lot of crime fiction, and I think Laura Lippman is really one of the best writers in the field. WHAT THE DEAD KNOW is a nice example of her talents.

The plot of WHAT THE DEAD KNOW is relatively straightforward. In 1975, two young sisters mysteriously disappeared during a trip to the local mall in Baltimore. Now, over thirty years later, a woman appears claiming to be one of the missing girls. The mystery of the novel is whether this woman is telling the truth.

WHAT THE DEAD KNOW is more of a psychological drama than a fast-paced thriller. There are a fair number of characters in this novel, and Lippman takes a lot of time exploring the psyche of each individual person. This is the type of novel with a lot of interior monologues, where the reader follows the character's thoughts and observations about life. As a result, most of the characters in this novel possess a great deal of depth and complexity.

The major flaw of WHAT THE DEAD KNOW is the lack of a genuinely likable protagonist. Nearly all the characters in this book are deeply flawed and some are downright annoying. While this is certainly realistic in many ways, it does make this novel tough to read in spots, since there is no specific person to root for.

Overall, however, I enjoyed this book a great deal, but not as much as EVERY SECRET THING, an earlier effort. Still, I think Lippman is an enormously talented crime writer, and I look forward to her future novels.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-10-10

I really have enjoyed this author. I like the whole approach of how she does her characters and the story lines really move right along. It is one of those books that you pick up and can't put down until you have gotten to the end. Then you're left waiting for the next one to come out.

5 out of 5 stars Not too old to enjoy.......2007-10-09

I passed this series several times with my daughter and then decided to pick them up for myself. I really enjoyed this series and really don't want them to end. I'm looking forward to book 4 and also twilight from Edwards point of view. If Stephenie is ever feeling really generous, or her sister, she can pass that never to be seen book my way! Thanks for pulling me back into reading.

4 out of 5 stars great story.......2007-10-09

I still love this series, faults and all. The characters are very intriguing and it is so refreshing to have a different perspective on the vampire/werewolf genre. The author truly found a different way of looking at something without being overly influence by previous novels and media. Yet, not so far away from our everyday thoughts to seem outlandish.

The only reason I give this four instead of five stars is because the OBSESSIVE devotion the main character feels for the vampire. To think she would die without him and cannot even function without him is insane. Although it does give an explaination for the title. Her relationship with him DOES eclipse everything small to large thing in her life. SOOOO not healthy. Just to leave on a good note, the by-play and competition between the vampire and werewolf was priceless. I loved it! and it made them seem more human than the human character.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-10-09

I think Eclipse may have been the best book yet, well other than the original. I think it was so awesome the way Stephanie Meyer's introduced the complexer stages of Edward and Bella's relationship. I thought in the first two books that it was a little to sappy. Also it was easy to believe that Bella's feelings for Edward were just a school girl's obsession with a really hot boy. In this book she actually had to choose between two equally great boys. I personally am way excited that she chose the one she did. I can't wait for the fourth book. I hope Bella really does go through with becoming a vampire. She's a unique human and should make a unique and fabulous vampire. Stephanie Meyer's has a great imagination and I can't wait to read her other stories, but personally I don't think I can handle the suspense of waiting for another book to come out about Edward and Bella. Hopefully the fourth will help wrap up their story. Though I would like to learn more about Alice and Jasper and the other characters. How they got their beginnings and their relationships. Great book and well worth the time and money spent. Every moment was enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book I Ever Read.......2007-10-08

This book is better than Harry Potter (I know, it's blasphemy). If you like the HP series, you will LOVE these books! Read them, ASAP.

Are you just another AFC ("average frustrated chump") trying to meet an HB ("hot babe")? How would you like to "full-close" with a Penthouse Pet of the Year? The answers, my friend, are in Neil Strauss's entertaining book The Game. Strauss was a self-described chick repellant--complete with large, bumpy nose, small, beady eyes, glasses, balding head, and, worst of all, painful shyness around women. He felt like "half a man." That is, until a book editor asked him to investigate the community of pickup artists. Strauss's life was transformed. He spent two years bedding some fine chiquitas and studying with some of the North America's most suave gents--including the best of them all, the God of the pickup "community," a man named Mystery.

Mystery is an aspiring Toronto magician who charges $2,250 for a weekend pickup workshop. He is not much to look at: a cross between a vampire and a computer geek. But by using high-powered marketing techniques he's turned seduction into an effortless craft--even inventing his own vocabulary. His technique sounds like a car salesman's tip sheet: his main rule is FMAC--find, meet, attract, close. He employs the "three-second rule"--always approach a woman within three seconds of first seeing her in order to avoid getting shy. Other tricks: Intrigue a beautiful woman by pretending to be unaffected by her charm; also, never hit on a woman right away. Start with a disarming, innocent remark, like "Do you think magic spells work?" or "Oh my god, did you see those two girls fighting outside?" And finally, the most important characteristic of the pickup artist--smile.

After two years, Strauss ends up becoming almost as successful as Mystery, but he comes to an important realization. His techniques were actually off-putting to the woman he ended up falling in love with. And they never prepared him for actually having a relationship. After a while, he ran out of one-liners and had to have a real conversation. Still, The Game is a great read that may help some AFCs come out of their shells. --Alex Roslin

Book Description

Hidden somewhere, in nearly every major city in the world, is an underground seduction lair. And in these lairs, men trade the most devastatingly effective techniques ever invented to charm women. This is not fiction. These men really exist. They live together in houses known as Projects. And Neil Strauss, the bestselling author, spent two years living among them, using the pseudonym Style to protect his real-life identity. The result is one of the most explosive and controversial books of the year -- guaranteed to change the lives of men and transform the way women understand the opposite sex forever.

On his journey from AFC (average frustrated chump) to PUA (pick-up artist) to PUG (pick-up guru), Strauss not only shares scores of original seduction techniques but also has unforgettable encounters with the likes of Tom Cruise, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Heidi Fleiss, and Courtney Love. And then things really start to get strange -- and passions lead to betrayals lead to violence. The Game is the story of one man's transformation from frog to prince -- to prisoner in the most unforgettable book of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!.......2007-10-10

It's 1:15 AM and I just finished this book. And I LOVED every page of it. I rarely read books if ever, but I read this one in two days.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Entertaining read!.......2007-10-08

This was one of the most fascinating and entertaining books I've ever read. Besides getting an inside look at the society of pick-up artists, I gained some interesting insight into human psychology. It's written in a wonderful narrative, story style which made it hard to put down.

It is a must read, whether you're interested in learning about how to pick up women or you're just wanting to read a great true story.

I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Not a pickup guide - but worth the read.......2007-10-06

I recently purchased this book after reading the many favorable reviews on Amazon.com.

First off, this isn't a "how to pick up girls" book, though the process is covered in some depth. Instead, it is a story of a man's search for himself and purpose in life by learning the techniques of the master pickup artists. Sound shallow? I thought so too until I began to read some more.

What starts as an innocent enough goal (to be more successful with women) ends up becoming an obsession for the author, who is short, balding, and not generally considered to be attractive. Neil Strauss (who goes by the name "Style") makes the slow but steady transition from AFC (average, frustrated chump) to mPUA (master pickup artist).

As a single man in his late 20's, I can easily identify with the author's initial challenges. Approaching a beautiful woman is an intimidating prospect, especially for men with low self-esteem - nevermind that they have no idea what to say. However, under the wings of the mPUA Mystery, Style comes into his own and seems to have no problem picking up any woman he sets his eyes on.

Along his journey, the reader is introduced to a variety of strange characters, from pickup wannabees to psychotic women.

The book is great for anyone - men or women, who would like a glimpse of the pickup community.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2007-10-05

I've read a bunch of these books on how to meet women and usually I don't bother to write a review - they are so bad. I read The Mystery Method: How to Get Beautiful Women Into Bed and thought it was good. In hindsight it would have been better to read The Game first. It just seems like the books fit better together that way and you should definitely read both. The story in this book is what makes it worth while. Forget the advice; you'll get all that from TMM and more but this book is the story and that makes it all the better, as you get to see the techniques in use. Perhaps the best point in the book is "Juggler was right; humor is the best way to get women." That is an interesting point because while both books talk about confidence and humor and while Juggler and some other guys have it, most of the other guys, including the author himself, don't really develop it - they just rely on all kinds of lines and schemes to impress women. To that end along with this book you must read God Is a Woman: Dating Disasters, which is by a comedian and which does include lots of in-depth pointers on building real confidence and humor. Without a doubt, these are the three books to read on women and I truly appreciate these guys putting their embarrassing moments out there for the rest of us to learn from.

5 out of 5 stars worth it's weight in gold.......2007-10-05

"They treat women as the enemy. And we're not, I swear!" wrote a female reviewer. As its title 'The Game' implies, Neil Strauss does not describe men and women as enemies at war, but as players on opposite sides of the same game. And most men happen to be ill-prepared to play this game as well as their female opponents. Unfortunately, this game can turn serious at any given moment.

At the very least, most guys who were raised by single moms and men who had sweet doormats as fathers are doomed in their relationships with women. The average wussboy got to be very lucky or he'll end up in the gutter, emotionally and/or literally. For starters, thousands of men are paying child support for other men's children. Hard evidence of DNA tests may be on the guy's side, gold-digging chicks and the "law" may not be his friends at all. Here we are at war indeed, aren't we?

Alas, you don't need children to be taken for the ride of your lifetime by a nice and friendly girl. Ask Paul McCartney. On your first date with the most lovely, intelligent, and witty lady you have ever met you better be aware of possibly flirting with your worst nightmare you may never recover from for the rest of your days. Material that allows men to approach women with a healthy dosage of emotional detachment is worth it's weight in gold. 'The Game' qualifies many times over.

Falling in love head over heals is--and always has been--reserved for the ultimate sucker, and perhaps Neil's book prevents the worst cases of loving idiocy and bankruptcy. Feeling confident and free to meet as many women as they wish permits guys to find the needle in the haystack. The first girl who is willing to sleep with a man is not likely to be his best bet. Duh. After meeting 80 or two hundred women, he may be better equipped to pick and choose.

So many men are scared to death to even talk to a woman. 'The Game' teaches how to defuse potential land mines every guy has stumbled over in the pre-relationship stage of male-female communication. Goodness, every woman who wants a real man as a life partner will appreciate that or she isn't worth having dinner with.

Last but not least, Neil Strauss' sense of humor makes for a grand experience of his unusual world.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-10-10

I absolutely love this book and cry or get emotional almost every time I read it. I have purchased it as a baby book for every woman I know who has recently had a baby girl. Each one of them feels the same for it. It is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars A Mother's Storybook Wish for Her Child.......2007-10-04

SOMEDAY is a mother's heartfelt storybook wish for her child -- that her child will grow up healthy, experience great joys, and someday have a family of her own. It's also a wish that she will be lovingly remembered by her child ("Someday, a long time from now, your own hair will glow silver in the sun. And when that day comes, love, you will remember be.") The book is reminiscent of Robert Munsch's Love You Forever, but the storyline is simpler and more realistic. The illustrations complement the story beautifully. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars touching, to say the least.......2007-09-21

This book brings me to tears at the very thought of it. I got about 1/2 way through the darling pictures and wonderful, sweet words and the tears started. By the time I finished I was a mess. I'm sure it will touch every mother who reads it-it is definitely a book for a baby girl or daughter since the pictures depict a mother/daughter relationship. It's about the simple memories we make with our children that mean more than anything. It's also about the dreams we hold for them. I now have a FAVORITE new book, one that will definitely be bought for others as well. Don't miss this one!

5 out of 5 stars made me cry.......2007-09-17

Takes you through birth-college-grandchildren-old age within a small book. As they say, kids grow up in the blink of an eye. Good for a pre-teen gift from mom to daugther. Very touching, probably how most moms feel about their daugthers.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Story of the Mother-Child Bond.......2007-09-15

I picked up this book in my local Toys-R-Us as my daughter picked among the Princess titles. I was looking for something special for an expecting friend and found it immediately in this book.

The book reminded me a little of "I'll Love You Forever" and "The Giving Tree" as it explores the changing relationship, and bonds as a child grows to adulthood.

The final page, when the mother imagines her own child with silver strands of hair, remembering her (the mother) was enough to bring me to tears in the store.

A beautiful book, not to be missed, a wonderful gift for mother and baby (not to mention one more useful and long lasting than similarly adorable baby bathrobes!)

Too much Jacob not enough Edward! I found myself skimming over the Jacob parts. Bella becomes annoying in this book and looses alot of her charm.

Can not say I loved it but it was still an enjoyable read. I really did love the parts at the end of the book where Edward has returned.

Twilight is a far superior book and a much more interesting read. Please SM get back to what makes Twilight great!

4 out of 5 stars The story continues............2007-10-08

This book continues from where Twilight left off. In New Moon, we're reintroduced to Bella and her relationship with the Cullen family, vampires who are determined not to kill humans. Unfortunately, the Cullens did not appear in this sequel too much, due to an incident towards the beginning of the book that causes them to break ties with Bella.

This story is more of the growth of the friendship between Jacob and Bella ~ and of Bella having to learn to live her life without the Cullens around. This book does seem a lot darker to me ~ Bella's depression is deep and she's seemed to have lost her willingness to live. It's almost as if she has an uncaring attitude whether she lives or dies. Maybe she doesn't want to die, but she sure doesn't want to get up in the morning, either.

I really enjoyed the friendship between Jacob and Bella. They have fun together, including quite a few mischievous adventures that are probably best left unknown to Bella's father, Charlie. That being said, I still missed Edward and longed for him to reappear every time I turned the page. Unfortunately (or fortunately??), he reappeared towards the end of the book, along with the rest of the Cullen family.

I'd say this is a Very Good read. Usually follow-up books are disappointing to their predecessors, and this is no exception ~ but it's still good. I think the character development is excellent and I cannot wait for this story to continue. I'm looking forward to reading Eclipse and seeing what happens next.

4 out of 5 stars Keeps the series moving along well, but not enough Edward!.......2007-10-07

I read the first book in two evenings, it was so good, and part of what I loved was the tortured romance and longing between Edward and Bella.

In this next book, Edward has left in order to protect Bella from himself and his family, and Bella turns to Jacob from the reservation. Their deepening friendship, and the complicated secrets that Jacob discovers about himself and his tribe, make it clear that Bella really is the danger magnet that Edward always suspected!

This book has a slower pace than the first one and less romantic longing, because while Bella loves Jake, she doesn't feel for him the same way that she feels for Edward, and so for me, it wasn't as big of a hit as the first one was. Still, after reading the first one, I doubt you will be able to resist continuing the trilogy and finding out what happens. I certainly couldn't!

4 out of 5 stars Obnoxious, actually, and yet I can't help but love them.......2007-10-06

I am going to be dead honest in this review: I cannot for the life of me quite figure out why I liked this book save for one reason and one reason only. I find the characters less-than-properly complex and the plot silly and romanticizied.

And yet, like so many readers, I read this with an inability to put it down and I loved every moment of it.

To make myself feel better, I shall begin with the bad. Mrs. Meyer puts a lot of faith in the concept that her characters are all madly in love with each other. Honestly, I see no reason for their infatuations other than emotion. I have yet to see anything that would set off a concrete and stable relationship. It is as if they have no other reason than to live for each other. In fact, the driving force of this novel is that Bella is utterly depressed by the fact that Edward and the rest of the Cullens have left. My goodness, by her actions and the various chapters devoted only to the names of months, it's as if someone had died. She's a teenage girl, she should have the ability to eventually bounce back. Too bad she has very little personality outside her love for Edward. Then again, no one else seems to have much personality save for the rather loveable Jacob Black. And even he eventually loses it in favor of lots of teen angst.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm just no longer a teenage girl. I'm sorry.

But look at my rating. 4 stars is pretty decent. And I believe my first paragraph was a paradox of my critiques and my love for this book.

The fact is that Mrs. Meyer has a gift with words. Her simple, hypnotic prose draws me in to the rainy, misty world of Forks with its vampires, werewolves, and beating hearts of passion. The emotion may be baseless, but it is strong, and she clearly does love her characters with the same love they feel for each other. I admit, the romance got me in the end.

I also admire her way with the vampire/werewolf mythology. It might be a little sugary, but I really don't mind it because it is complex enough without going the encyclopedia route. I also liked the way she dipped, almost Anne Rice style, into the question of vampires and God.

I do wish Mrs. Meyer would learn to give her characters personalities that exist without each other, but she is still getting money from me whenever she writes a book.

Keep up that pretty writing and that awesome vampire/werewolf mythology.

Unhappiness in marriage often has a simple root cause: we speak different love languages, believes Dr. Gary Chapman. While working as a marriage counselor for more than 30 years, he identified five love languages: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. In a friendly, often humorous style, he unpacks each one. Some husbands or wives may crave focused attention; another needs regular praise. Gifts are highly important to one spouse, while another sees fixing a leaky faucet, ironing a shirt, or cooking a meal as filling their "love tank." Some partners might find physical touch makes them feel valued: holding hands, giving back rubs, and sexual contact. Chapman illustrates each love language with real-life examples from his counseling practice.

How do you discover your spouse's - and your own - love language? Chapman's short questionnaires are one of several ways to find out. Throughout the book, he also includes application questions that can be answered more extensively in the beautifully detailed companion leather journal (an exclusive Amazon.com set). Each section of the journal corresponds with a chapter from the book, offering opportunities for deeper reflection on your marriage.

Although some readers may find choosing to love a spouse that they no longer even like -hoping the feelings of affection will follow later- a difficult concept to swallow, Chapman promises that the results will be worth the effort. "Love is a choice," says Chapman. "And either partner can start the process today." --Cindy Crosby. This text refers to the Amazon.com Exclusive Journal & Paperback Book Set.

This is a great book. It helped me look at the way I treated my husband and my children. I can now more fully express my love to my family in ways that they understand. I bought a copy for my mom and sisters.

I got this book in hopes of finding ways my hubby and I can connect. He read this book really fast and I'm still reading a couple of chapters at a time. Although the suggestions are good and we are using them to mend some issues in our relationship; it wasn't something that I just couldn't put down like hubby. For overall content I give kudos.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful for all couples.......2007-09-27

This book was recommended to me by a colleague. It is actually used in premarriage counseling as well as couples therapy. I wish I'd read this earlier! A definite must have for understanding the two sides of relationships. I usually purchase a copy as a gift for close friends at bridal showers, etc. It is an easy read, and very helpful for old and new couples alike.

I found the book worthwhile to listen to. The author offered good practical advice to improving your relationship. I was disappointed that the last 1/5th of the program concentrated on the writings of Jesus. I do not believe that believing in a certain religion will help my relationship.

In this splendid retelling of the biblical story of Hosea, bestselling author Francine Rivers pens a heartbreaking romance between a prostitute and the upright and kind farmer who marries her; the story also functions as a reminder of God's unconditional love for his people. Redeeming Love opens with the Gold Rush of 1850 and its rough-and-tumble atmosphere of greed and desire. Angel, who was sold into prostitution as a child, has learned to distrust all men, who see her only as a way to satisfy their lust. When the virtuous and spiritual-minded Michael Hosea is told by God to marry this "soiled dove," he obeys, despite his misgivings. As Angel learns to love him, she begins to hope again but is soon overwhelmed by fear and returns to her old life. Rivers shines in her ability to weave together spiritual themes and sexual tension in a well-told story, a talent that has propelled her into the spotlight as one of the most popular novelists in the genre of Christian fiction. This is one of her best. --Cindy Crosby

Can God’s Love Save Anyone?

Bestselling author Francine Rivers skillfully retells the biblical love story of Gomer and Hosea in a tale set against the exciting backdrop of the California Gold Rush. The heroine, Angel, is a young woman who was sold into prostitution as a child. Michael Hosea is a godly man sent into Angel’s life to draw her into the Savior’s redeeming love. This remarkable novel has sold over a million copies and is among the top twenty on the ECPA fiction bestsellers list for four years running. A six-part study guide, suitable for individual use or group discussion, is included in this bestselling novel.

ALSO AVAILABLE: Now own this beloved classic in the keepsake hardcover edition!

California’s gold country, 1850. A time when men sold their souls for a bag of gold and women sold their bodies for a place to sleep.

Angel expects nothing from men but betrayal. Sold into prostitution as a child, she survives by keeping her hatred alive. And what she hates most are the men who use her, leaving her empty and dead inside.

Then she meets Michael Hosea.

A man who seeks his Father’s heart in everything, Michael Hosea obeys God’s call to marry Angel and to love her unconditionally. Slowly, day by day, he defies Angel’s every bitter expectation until, despite her resistance her frozen heart begins to thaw. But with her unexpected softening come overwhelming feelings of unworthiness and fear. And so Angel runs. Back to the darkness, away from her husband’s pursuing love, terrified of the truth she can no longer deny: Her final healing must come from the One who loves her even more than Michael Hosea does…the One who will never let her go.

A powerful retelling of the book of Hosea, Redeeming Love is a life-changing story of God’s unconditional, redemptive, all-consuming love.

Story Behind the Book

“Writing Redeeming Love was a form of worship for me. Through it, I was able to thank God for loving me even when I was defiant, rebellious, contemptuous of what I thought being a Christian meant, and afraid to give my heart away. I had wanted to be my own god and have control of my life the way Eve did in the Garden of Eden. Now I know to be loved by Christ is the ultimate joy and fulfillment. Everything in Redeeming Love was a gift from the Lord: plot, characters, theme. None of it is mine to claim.”

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Captivating, Interesting, Emotional.......2007-10-08

This is one of my most favorite books. This is the first book I read by Francine Rivers and thought it was wonderful! Our church ladies summer reading group chose it so that's how I came to read it. It's a western story that portrays God's forgiveness and love for us like the book of Hosea in the Bible upon which this story is loosely based. It gives insight into prostitution and sparks some interesting discussion. The main character, Angel, starts out as a beautiful little girl who gets sold into prostitution with no decent role models and doesn't see real love until she meets Michael Hosea who decides to marry her and take her out of the brothel no matter what. Her life is mostly down, but has ups when she's with him, but she feels so unworthy. Eventually, she learns to trust Michael and more importantly, God, who changes her life. Although it is fiction, the characters are well developed and seem very real. I found myself pulling for Angel all through the book, in spite of her poor decisions. Although some parts are very depressing, it has an amazing ending the left me feeling happy. I even picked up a new prayer idea from this book. This book covers a wide spectrum from cruel and depressing to wonderful and joyful, even though it didn't end like I thought it would. I highly recommend this book!

1 out of 5 stars Ghastly!.......2007-10-01

After reading all the reviews, I just had to get this book. After all, everyone just has the most glowing things to say about it. I am agog. This is just a terrible book. The characters aren't interesting and there is nothing challenging about it. Obviously, I am just not getting why everyone loves this book so much, but the writing is average, the characters forgettable and completely boring. I simply do not understand why this book had garnered so much praise! Ugh!

5 out of 5 stars Redeeming Love-Fiction.......2007-10-01

Fantastic Christian book that has several lessons and even has topics for discussion. The book made a terrific "Just Because" gift for friends.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever.......2007-09-29

this is the best book I have ever read, I sent it to all my girlfriends and women family members.

5 out of 5 stars Riveting!.......2007-09-27

This book is a riveting and powerful retelling of the biblical story of Hosea and Gomer. I loved the journey through it - I could feel Angel's pain, her despair, her certainty that she didn't deserve Hosea's love or a better life, that she would always be a prostitute. As for Hosea, he was not, as the hero in a romance novel often is, perfect - he struggled with lust, with anger at God and anger at Angel, and with his desire to do things his own way. Yet his faith always overcame in the end, and by listening to God's direction, he knew a joy unsurpassed.

This book grabbed me in on the first page and didn't let me go until I was finished - it's been distracting me from work for days! I finally just sat down and decided to finish it; I figured it would be faster.

Hope and despair. Love and hatred. Rebellion and submission. Fear and comfort. Confusion and clarity. Excruciating pain and unrivaled joy. What more could you want?

Book Description

Four sisters, a Manhattan brownstone, and a tumultuous year of loss and courage are at the heart of Danielle Steel’s new novel about a remarkable family, a stunning tragedy—and what happens when four very different young women come together under one very lively roof.

Candy–it’s the only name she needs—is blazing her way through Paris, New York, and Tokyo as fashion’s latest international supermodel. . . .

Her sister Tammy has a job producing the most successful hit show on TV, and a home she loves in L.A.’s Hollywood Hills. . . . In New York, oldest sister Sabrina is an ambitious young lawyer, while Annie is an American artist in Florence, living for her art. . . . On one Fourth of July weekend, as they do every year, the four sisters come home to Connecticut for their family’s annual gathering. But before the holiday is over, tragedy strikes and their world is utterly changed.

Suddenly, four sisters who have been fervently pursuing success and their own lives—on opposite sides of the world—reunite to share one New York brownstone, to support each other and their father, and to pick up the pieces while one sister struggles to heal her shattered body and soul. Thus begins an unscripted chapter of their lives, as a bustling house is soon filled with eccentric dogs, laughter, tears, friends, men . . . and the kind of honesty and unconditional love only sisters can provide. But as the four women settle in, they are forced to confront the direction of their respective lives. As the year passes and another July Fourth approaches, a season of grief and change gives way to new beginnings—as a family comes together to share its blessings and a future filled with surprises and, ultimately, hope.

With unerring insight and compassion, Danielle Steel tells a compelling story of four sisters who love and laugh, struggle and triumph . . . and are irrevocably woven into the fabric of each other’s lives. Brilliantly blending humor and heartbreak, she delivers a powerful message about the fragility–and the wonder—of life.

My mom and I have been reading Danielle Steel for years and years. We collect all her books. Her stories take you all over the world. She has lived(in real life) in many different parts of the world. And her stories make you feel, as though, you have been there too! And the way she describes her characters in her stories, make you feel as though, you personally know the person. Her books are ones, that you don`t want to put down. You want to finish the story, so you can start another one of her books. She has a new book due out in February 2008. Mom and I can`t wait to read this one!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Excellent, until a too sudden, too sugarcoated ending!.......2007-09-14

In Danielle Steel's latest novel "Sisters", the story starts out with the usual trademark fairytale quality.

Four sisters with highly successful and interesting careers, are scattered around the world; New York, Los Angeles, Paris and Florence. Hardly your average bunch of ordinary lives.

But that's the beginning. The surface. The setting. Until tragedy strikes and man's vulnerability cuts through whatever glamourous lifestyles the sisters may seemingly enjoy.

Life is turned upside down. Reality is as unexpected, harsh and as far from a fairytale as can be. The best part of the book describes the developments straight forward, honest and with much warmth and insight.

That a happy ending awaits, is Danielle Steel's trademark. However, the way tragedy all too quickly literary turns into happiness is a bit too easy to give the story balance. The pieces of the puzzle fall into place so fast and conveniently for all the family members that the situation is hard to fathom even for the most soft-hearted.

Tragedies ARE overcome but usually it takes time and hardship to build up a new future.

This book could actually have been longer. A more natural development of the situation and not the lightening quick wrapping up of loose ends during the last fifty pages or so, would have given the story more credibility.

Happy solutions are nice, but the turning of events in "Sisters" is simply too sweet and sudden even for a fairytale.

4 out of 5 stars Sisters.......2007-09-06

I really enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down. Being one of three sisters I could definatly understand the sisters.

3 out of 5 stars Too Fluffy too perfect !!!.......2007-08-28

Although I did enjoy this book, I found the characters too perfect. The relationships between the sisters seemed too false. All the sisters were beautiful, with great jobs, and would do anything for each other, and they hardly ever had a fight, blah, blah, blah. Most sisters do not get to live like the girls in this fluffy type fairytale.

I have not read DS in many years and now I remember why. This book repeated the same ideas and even the same phrases so often it was annoying. She could have written this book in just a few pages and not missed anything important. I anticipated the predictable story ie. tragedy, depression, find a man fall in love, live happily every after. The rape story seemed thrown in and was all wrapped up too quickly to add anything interesting to the story.

Book Description

The phenomenal series set in a future New York City returns as NYPSD Lt. Eve Dallas hunts for the killer of a seemingly ordinary history teacher-and uncovers some extraordinary surprises. Craig Foster's death devastated his young wife, who'd sent him to work that day with a lovingly packed lunch. It shocked his colleagues at the private school, too, and as for the ten-year-old girls who found him in his classroom in a pool of bodily fluids-they may have been traumatized for life.

Eve soon determines that Foster's homemade lunch was tainted with deadly ricin, and that Mr. Foster's colleagues have some startling secrets of their own. It's Eve's job to sort it out- and discover why someone would have done this to a man who seemed so inoffensive, so pleasant . . . so innocent.

Now Magdalena Percell . . . there's someone Eve can picture as a murder victim. Possibly at Eve's own hands. The slinky blonde-an old flame of her billionaire husband, Roarke-has arrived in New York, and she's anything but innocent. Roarke seems blind to Magdalena's manipulation, and he insists that the occasional lunch or business meeting with her is nothing to worry about . . . and none of Eve's business. Eve's so unnerved by the situation that she finds it hard to focus on her case. Still, she'll have to put aside her feelings, for a while at least-because another man has just turned up dead.

Eve knows all too well that innocence can be a faade. Keeping that in mind may help her solve this case at last. But it may also tear apart her marriage.

5 out of 5 stars Innocent in Death.......2007-10-07

Lt. Eve Dallas and her partner Detective Delia Peabody are called on-scene to investigate the death of a teacher at one of NYC's top private schools. Craig Foster was a popular history teacher who died from drinking poisoned cocoa. Since Foster brought the cocoa from home, Dallas and Peabody initially suspect his wife or a family member. But there are no red flags there, so they move on to the parents of Foster's students or one of his colleagues. They hone in on another teacher, one known for his sexual promiscuousness and who Foster had had words with over his harassment of a school employee. Before they can investigate this man further, his body is discovered in the school's pool. Dallas and Peabody are baffled but convinced more than ever that someone connected with the school is behind the murders.

For the first time, Eve is having a hard time concentrating on an investigation. A woman from Roarke's past has entered the picture, and it isn't long before there's tension between Eve and Roarke and harsh words spoken. Stoic Eve is startled to find herself so emotionally overwrought by this woman and her efforts to create conflict between Eve and Roarke. But she forces her mind on the investigation and what she discovers shocks even the jaded Lt. Dallas.

Robb's popular series remains a constant bestseller and it isn't hard to figure out why, with likeable characters and suspenseful plots. The relationship between Dallas and Roarke is a bonus and is explored in-depth in this book. Robb displays talent for drawing the reader into her characters' angst and despair at the disruption in their marriage. Eve's and Roarke's mutual fright over babies is humorous and adds a light note to an otherwise dark mystery.

5 out of 5 stars short but sweet.......2007-09-28

As always, J.D. Robb has created a fast paced mystery featuring our favorite murder cop, Eve Dallas and her deliciously sexy, wealthy husband, the inimitable Roark. Although Robb's focus on the single storyline omits the antics of some of this series's more colorful characters whom we have come to love, she retains the flavor of the "In Death" novels through the personalities of her main characters. "Interlude" is a must have to complete your "In Death" collection.

5 out of 5 stars Better and Better.......2007-09-27

I've read just over half of the books in this series, and this was my favorite so far.
I think the relationship issues with Eve and Roarke were much more true to life than they have been in previous books. Don't get me wrong, I like the series alot, but sometimes the fights between them seemed to be just staged to get to the 'making up'. This book made their conflicts seem more real, and even knowning they'll get their 'happily ever after' in the end (they just have to!) there is some serious tension and tears! There was also more on the other characters this time around (and Summerset's shell cracks a little more)
Some reviews said that the ending was too predictable, but even though I thought I knew 'whodunit' I really couldn't quite believe it until reading the end!

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent "In Death" Book.......2007-09-27

This latest installment in the In Death series takes us into the minds of both Eve and Rourke. Throw in a murder at an exclusive private school and you have Innocent in Death. This book gets more into Eve and Rourke's relationship. Someone from Rourke's past comes to visit and Eve gets jealous. I really liked how in the end Rourke puts Maggie into her place. A right cross from Eve placed on Maggie's nose didn't help either.

My sister says the book has a predicitable ending. I did not see who the murderer was.....
