5 out of 5 stars A Diverse Collection of Poetry by Italian Renaissance Women Writers.......2005-08-26

It is really good to find an excellent translation on women poets of the Italian Renaissance, as well as to have an edition that has facing Italian and English poems. The translators have also preserved the spelling and diacritical marks of the original text. The brief biography on each woman writer offers important background information on her life and her literary style. At the end of the book, there is an additional section written about the political and social situation in Italy from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. There is an added bonus of a map that shows the Italian city-states around 1559. The bibliography shows the amount of painstaking effort to research material for this book. Finally, there is an index of first-lines that makes reference very easy. Therefore, this book is an excellent book to use either in a classroom or for purely recreational enjoyment.

Book Description

When it appeared in 1874, Lady Anna met with little success, and positively outraged the conservative - `This is the sort of thing the reading public will never stand...a man must be embittered by some violent present exasperation who can like such disruptions of social order as this.' (Saturday Review) - although Trollope himself considered it `the best novel I ever wrote! Very much! Quite far away above all others!!!' This tightly constructed and passionate study of enforced marriage in the world of Radical politics and social inequality, records the lifelong attempt of Countess Lovel to justify her claim to her title, and her daughter Anna's legitimacy, after her husband announces that he already has a wife. However, mother and daughter are driven apart when Anna defies her mother's wish that she marry her cousin, heir to her father's title, and falls in love with journeyman tailor and young Radical Daniel Thwaite. The outcome is never in doubt, but Trollope's ambivalence on the question is profound, and the novel both intense and powerful.

Download Description

Not a word had been heard in Keswick of the proposed return of the old lord -- for the Earl was now an old man -- past his sixtieth year, and in truth with as many signs of age as some men bear at eighty. The life which he had led no doubt had had its allurements, but it is one which hardly admits of a hale and happy evening. Men who make women a prey, prey also on themselves. But there he was, back at Lovel Grange, and no one knew why he had come, nor whence, nor how.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Romance of a Real and Strange sort.......2003-03-21

This was an interesting, if imperfect, novel of marriage. The main thrust of the novel has to do with a legal battle a COuntess and her daughter, Lady Anna, engage in to assert their legal rights after having been abused by an evil Earl, who married and abandoned the Countess. To assert these rights, a demand is made by the mother to the daughter that she wed her cousin, although no one guesses that Anna is already engaged to the poor tailor who has been her one true friend in life.

I enjoyed many aspects of the novel, primarily how the mother-daughter relationship plays out. The subplot of the book is that we all must separate from Mother, and make our own way, our own decisions. This Mother is especially hard-hearted and single-minded and acts very melodramatically in one scene to the tailor (a really weird, overblown scene I could have lived without and which was incidentally, albeit unintentionally, funny).

Anna herself is a character with many virtues. She Almost gives in but does not do so because she is guided by an internal voice of loyalty. Her love on the other hand is drawn realistically if not in a flattering way. Daniel is almost an anti-hero. Not entirely sympathetic, you learn to like him because he seems real. The 'triangle' between those two and Lord Lovel is well-depicted, and no character comes off as 'the baddie.'

Another aspect I respected was the depiction of law, and how society restrains its denizens into conventional and superficial marriages. I disagree with the previous reviewer who said this was a light novel. I think there are very dark moments and a suspicion about the characters' motives at every turn. Yet, there is decency in many characters: Anna herself and the Solicitor-General being the obvious ones.

I liked this immensely, despite it being overlong and having some over-the-top moments that did not 'go' with the rest of the novel. Still, the novel has great style.

4 out of 5 stars An Incomplete Saga.......2001-01-28

Anthony Trollope declared once that "Lady Anna" was "the best novel I ever wrote". Readers did not agree. Appearing between the masterpieces "Phineas Redux" and "The Way We Live Now", it sold poorly and has been neglected ever since. Trollope blamed this failure on his audience's objections to the heroine's choice of a husband, though similar complaints, much more vehemently expressed, had not sunk "The Small House at Allington". (There Lily Dale remains faithful to the memory of a cad, scorning the devoted attentions of a worthy suitor. Anna's wooers, by contrast, are both good men, though vastly different in rank and personality.)

"Lady Anna" is, in fact, a well-knit narrative with more suspense than is usual for Trollope. Will the courts declare Anna to be Lady Anna Lovel, heiress to 35,000 pounds a year, or merely Anna Murray, a pauper? Which of her suitors, the sometimes surly tailor Daniel Thwaite or her handsome, good-natured cousin Lord Lovel, will Anna prefer? Will Daniel's political principles lead to a breach with his childhood sweetheart? Will the impoverished Lord Lovel find honorable means to support his noble rank? The plot takes surprising, if not astonishing, turns; the characterization is as deft as ever; and there is a leavening of subtle humor, such as Daniel's cross-purposes consultation with a quondam radical poet (a thinly disguised Robert Southey) who has evolved into an intractable Tory.

The book's weakness is that the leading characters are, by and large, decent folk at the beginning and, except for one who falls into a state akin to madness, remain decent, if not unchanged, to the end. Conflicts end in rational compromises. Everybody eventually sees everybody else's point of view. Even the lawyers on opposite sides of Lady Anna's case get along amicably. (One solicitor does have the sense to grumble that such harmony is unprofessional.)

Trollope's liking for this novel may have arisen from the fact that it is light, sunny and fresh. There may be an evil earl in the first chapter and a mad countess in the last, but how pleasant for the writer to be free for a time from the political intrigues, financial manipulations and cynical worldliness of the Palliser saga and "The Way We Live Now"! Moreover, "Lady Anna" was, in its creator's mind, only a prologue. The last paragraph promises a (never written) sequel, where the characters doubtless were intended to meet sterner challenges. There are hints that the scene would have shifted to Australia and America and that the hero's and heroine's homegrown principles were to be put to the test in those lands. Thus the author had much in view that he never disclosed to his readers, perhaps accounting for part of the discrepancy between his opinion and theirs.

No one who has not read all of the Palliser and Barset novels, not to mention "The Way We Live Now", should pick up "Lady Anna". I recommend it immediately after the last-named. It will cleanse the palate and leave a lingering regret that the rest of Anna's and Daniel's and Lord Lovel's adventures will never be known.

Incidental note: The introduction to the Oxford World's Classics edition, the one that I am reviewing, is an extraordinarily silly example of lit crit bafflegab. Don't read it before reading the novel. Read afterwards, its wrong-headed ideological interpretations may prove amusing.

This book was great!!!!!!! I was reading it with my class, and I think that its better to read it slowly and kind of think about what she is saying. Sure, the names are a little confusing at first, but then it really picks up. Dispite the other reviews, I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not the best, not at all..........................2005-08-07

Princess 'Green Jay on the wall' is 13 years old and the year is 749 AD., she is the daughter of King Hanaab Pacal and lives in Lakhama. Her father is not on good terms with the neighbouring tribes of Lakhama, and therefore decides to wed his daughter to the Son God, which will strenghten his power as tribe in Bacal. Princess 'Green Jay on the wall' sets out on a long journey to Xukpi, where her to-be-husband lives with many servants and bodyguards. But many wars are going on and her people including her could be attacked at any time, life is not safe. Princess 'Green Jay on the Wall' decides to be brave and strong and prove herself worthy as the true flower of Bacal. I didn't enjoy this book as much and it wasn't as interesting as I thought a princess living in a mayan area would be. The names were all pretty ridiculous and there was no plot, only fear of plot. There was too much complaning and her journey took around 200 pages! I just hope this unworthy Royal Diary won't take the series down into the dark roads of despair. Im not happy and neither would you be.

3 out of 5 stars Give It A Chance Folks!!!.......2005-02-12

Ok, the story was not the best of the Royal diaries I've ever read, but it wasn't horrible. I got it from the library, read it and ok, a few of the names are confusing. Big deal. I got through it and I would definitely read it again. As to the "stupidity of the names" as they've been called, hey, let's face it, that's what they named people in 749 A.D. For that matter, read Indian names dating 1500's.
It took me a couple of times to totally get the whole point, but after a few times through it, I picked up on things that I didn't the first time.
Give it a chance!!!

    Book Description

In the 10 years since its first publication, When the Fat Lady Sings has sold more than 60,000 copies worldwide. Now, to celebrate a decade of delighting opera fans and foes alike, musical historian and humorist David Barber has prepared a special revised and expanded edition of his hilarious bestselling history of opera. Chapters such as Serious Buffoonery, Teutonic Tunesmiths and, of course, Italian Sausage Machines display Barber's rapier wit and knack for knowing fascinating, if sometimes useless, information about music, musicians and the offbeat world they live in. This expanded edition includes new material ranging from Strauss to ragtime, opera to the Tenor Menace. From Italian castrati to German Ring-bearers, from Handel's fights with rival sopranos to Puccini's nicotine habit, the author of Bach, Beethoven and the Boys and Tenors, Tantrums and Trills delivers a funny yet informative, irreverent yet affectionate history of serious music's most serious art form as only he can - and as only he would dare to do.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT Way To Learn Opera!!.......2000-12-31

I am a music major at college and study opera intensivly. There are some really boring books on the subject, but When The Fat Lady Sings is NOT one of them! All of the facts were there and were presented in a way that kept my attention. I would reccomend this book to the music student looking to brush up on composers, to the people who want to know a little more about what opera is, and to the person who wants something interesting to say at a cocktail party. Anyone can learn something from this book with or without music knowledge. I didn't think a book could be written about opera that is both true to the subject AND funny. Well done Mr. Barber!

    5 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2000-01-06

I loved this book. It's funny and cute! I did never know Wagner loved pink silk underwears... It's the best book to read if you are not an opera lover, and have to get the information...

4 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Opera History.......2000-01-06

This book tells all the fun stuff that you don't usually hear about opera composers along with a sturdy structure of opera history. Easy to read and intensely funny, this book's only weakness is that it misses a lot of important composers and concentrates on a couple of unimportant ones. Thus, the reader is left with a feeling like the author got tired of writing and stopped halfway through. If the author added enough information for this book to be more comprehensive representation of opera history, it would a wonderful book for both opera experts and opera neophytes.

5 out of 5 stars Hillariosly True stories of composers.......1999-04-14

I bought this book after I had been in "Carmen". Mr. Barber brings out a funny story in operas that are meant to be sad, romantic, and makes the comical ones even more laughable. I reccommend this book to all lovers of opera

This was a truly faboo read!

Anna Jennet weaves a story that is ironic, funny and sweet without ever becoming sappy. She populates the tale with wonderful supporting characters and a touch of the supernatural. All of the ladies of the clan are portrayed with varying amounts of spunk and humor.

And the heroine knows *exactly* what she is doing. No Scottish lassie would actually *want* to be captured, would she? Fantastic read. Even better the second or third time through.

        4 out of 5 stars A fun read.......2000-04-22

I enjoyed My Lady Captor. It's more entertaining than the official reviews seem to have it. The path of true love never runs smoothly - and this prooves it. It's mighty tough on a big strong man to find himself captured by a slip of a woman and her nutty family - all of them women - and held for ransom so they can use the ransom they get for him to get their lord (the only male in the family) back from the British. Several surprising characters are thrown in just to make things a little more interesting. If you can find it, it's worth the read. Have fun.

Little does she know when she climbs into the Winnebago that she's about to lose her heart to two kids and a handsome man who she thinks is a steelworker. When Nealy discovers his real job, Mat may wish he'd confessed earlier. In the meantime, they're off on an adventure, the likes of which Nealy's never had before. But the Secret Service is hot on Nealy's trail and despite her best efforts, she's bound to be caught. The question is, what will happen to this slapdash family when they're found?

Wonderful characters are what you expect from Phillips, and that's exactly what you get here: a heroine with strong convictions about everything from letting a baby eat cheese curls off the floor to morals in politics; a hero who adamantly denies that he likes females even as he's saving and taking care of them; and two children that will pluck your heartstrings like they've never been plucked before. They spar their way through a wild trip on the road to happiness, making for a book that's funny, romantic, and just plain fun to read. --Lois Faye Dyer

4 out of 5 stars Good book, poor epilogue.......2007-06-13

SEP offers nice escapism and fun. This implausible story is fun and sparks the reader's imagination. Nealy and Mat were great, but I especially enjoyed Lucy; SEP did a good job of getting the sullen, but loving, teen "just right." The epilogue wasn't believable at all. I doubt a person who ran from the "fish bowl" existence of First Lady would actively pursue the office of President later.

          5 out of 5 stars Fun book.......2007-06-08

I was surprised, but I really liked this book (I listened to it). I've been looking for some escapism and I enjoyed the characters (generally) and the adventure. But I really like the author, so I'm probably biased.

4 out of 5 stars SEP makes it work!.......2006-06-25

When I read the back cover of this book, I thought the story was quite unbelievable but SEP manages to make it work in her own way. With her usual crisp dialogues and witty style, she makes the reader not only believe in the story but also that we were reading about a normal family instead of the first lady. Although some parts in the middle felt like a drag, this highly entertaining and fun book definitly deserves 4 stars!

          4 out of 5 stars 4-1/2 Stars for a Feisty Lady.......2006-03-02

This was a really entertaining story centered around Cornelia Litchfield Case, First Lady of a recently deceased President, and unable to shed her responsibilities at the request of the current widowed President. "Nealy" decides enough is enough, comes up with a disguise and blends herself into a White House tour to escape the confines of her very guarded life (she is the daughter of a former Vice President of 8 years as well). This is where her adventure begins. While enjoying the road to freedom, she meets up w/Mat Jorik who is traveling from Pennsylvania to Iowa in Mabel - a well-worn motor home w/two youngsters - Lucy - age 14, street smart and badly in need of a family as well as her baby sister, Button. Mat too is looking for freedom, delivering the girls to their only living relative, their grandmother in Iowa, to keep them from being put in foster care. Mat was briefly married to their mother 15 years ago, is not the father of either one, however, their mother, Sandy (now deceased), had put his name on their birth certificates, for lack of a better candidate! After raising 7 sisters, the last thing Mat is looking for is a ready-made family. Without giving the storyline away, it is an amusing and extremely entertaining group when they all meet up on the road. We see Nealy, for the first time in her life, enjoying the simple pleasures of the world and Susan Elizabeth Phillip's character and scenery descriptions are nothing short of exceptional. I totally enjoyed this story. SEP is a fantastic author. "First Lady" is pure pleasurable reading.
