I bought this book for a grandchild. I grew up with the stories and want to share them and the characters with him. Who hasn't heard of at least one of the characters in the book: Paul Bunyan, Davy Crockett?

The writing style will be easily understood by children in early elementary. The really exceptional part of this book is the Foreward. It easily and clearly explains how the stories in the book have become part of our US cultural heritage without needing to be an educator to understand it.

I highly recommend it to anyone considering this type of book.

Do you know how the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River were first formed? How about the Great Plains and the Grand Canyon? Some people think these wonders were established by the forces of nature, but those folks clearly haven't heard of Paul Bunyan, the "strongest, smartest, and tallest hero of the tallest of American tall tales." Paul and his pal, Babe the Blue Ox, were responsible for creating all these geographic features as they worked their way west with their unusual lumber crew. Paul's adventures begin when he is just a baby (who can lift a cow over his head) and continue as he grows into the biggest lumberjack in the world. All the basic stories about Paul Bunyan are here in this rollicking tale, as well as a few inventive incidents added by author and illustrator Steven Kellogg.

Kellogg is well known for his stories about Pinkerton the Great Dane, retellings of classic tales such as Chicken Little, and illustrations for books such as How Much Is a Million? by David Schwartz. But Kellogg's most important contribution to children's literature is his series on American folk heroes, including Johnny Appleseed, Mike Fink, Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind Crockett, and of course, the tallest hero of the tallest tale of all--Paul Bunyan. A great legend and great fun. (Ages 5 to 9) --Marcie Bovetz

Book Description

Who was the largest baby ever born in the state of Maine? Who dug the Great Lakes? Who gouged out the Grand Canyon? Why, Paul Bunyan, of course, America's finest, fastest, funniest lumberman and favorite tall-tale hero.

Saccharine cotton candy. About the only "real" thing left from the folk tales is Babe being found during a blue snow and staying blue. My grandkids' great great grandparents came from a logging past. Am I going to use this book to introduce them to heir own history? Absolutely not.

4 out of 5 stars Great Pictures for a Great Story!.......2006-02-10

Paul Bunyan is a great book to entertain anyone. You'll love it! When I first read it I didnt want it to finish it. Can you believe it?! Paul Bunyan is the greatest character ever! Paul Bunyan gets raced in the Wild West fighting through anything that gets in his way. So watch out and dont run into him because he'll knock you off your feet!

4 out of 5 stars Jeff's Book Review.......2004-03-08

This book is very funny and entertaining. It was funny to see how Paul Bunyan, who was gigantic as both a baby and an adult, delt with all of the people and monsters who were much smaller than him. This book has great pictures and will make you laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Illustrated!.......2001-04-09

This is a very enjoyable story retold with the most captivating illustrations. The vocabulary telling this story is wonderful and is a great book to read to the young and an excellent book for the early reader. Children will enjoy this enhanced version! This is not a book to miss.

5 out of 5 stars fun with tall tales.......2000-06-24

Students are sure to enjoy this hilarious account of how many of our nation's wonders were created. This tall tale has been "spruced up" with a rich and colorful vocubulary, and is combined with illustrations that will keep the reader coming back for discovery time and time again. Steven Kellog's series of tall tales are invaluable in the classroom as students experience various literary elements such as: genre, author/illustrators, and theme related impressions.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-02-19

As a member of the Junior League and a collector of Junior League cookbooks, I have to say that this book is one of the best I have ever seen or used. While some of the receipes may be a little time intensive, they are worth it! The chicken pecan quiche and the spicy spinich pinwheels are to die for! You will not be disappointed with this book!

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-07-28

I expected some simpler Southern cooking because of the title. The recipes might have came from California instead from Atlanta. No thanks, this isn't Southern fixin's.

3 out of 5 stars Coca Cola Recipe IS wrong!.......2005-06-28

The first recipe I tried from this book was the "controversial" Coca Cola Cake-& it was indeed a flop! In researching other versions of this recipe I found that for the icing, this recipe calls for 3/4 cup of cola whereas most others call for approx. 3 tablespoons! No wonder mine looked lake a "floating isle"! Now I'm not sure I trust the other recipes!

5 out of 5 stars A culinary wealth of delicious home-style cooking.......2003-10-14

Compiled by members of The Junior League Of Atlanta, True Grits: Tall Tales And Recipes From The New South presents a culinary wealth of delicious home-style cooking ranging from traditional faire such as Fried Chicken and Buttermilk Biscuits, to original, mouth-watering offerings such as Pan-Seared Crab Cakes with Lemon Linguini; Kiwifruit Frozen Yogurt; Peanut Butter Chocolate Drops; and more. Helpful hints and enjoyable anecdotal tales in the margins add a friendly and enjoyable touch to this excellent and savory recipe guide.

5 out of 5 stars Five's not enough -- make it 10 stars........2002-07-18

Jr. League cookbooks have come a long way since the first little spiral-bound paper products of some 40 or 50 years ago. I don't know if the Atlanta Jr. League was the first to come up with the cookbook moneymaker project, but I do know their cookbooks have been much respected over the years -- venerated, even.

In this one, though, they've outdone themselves. Even if the recipes were awful (and they're not), there's still enough entertainment in this book to make it worthy of the price. And that's not counting the gorgeous illustrations that place it firmly in coffeetable display status.

It's the stories by famous Georgia writers that kick this volume into the stratosphere of pleasure.
Ferrol Sams's double-take as he watches Katie Couric brave a glass of horse's milk on the Today Show, for example, is bound to split a stitch or two.
Then there's the late Lewis Grizzard on his prowess at the grill. "I come from a long line of outdoor grillers," he says, "My Uncle Jerome still holds the American record for consecutive days grilling out, 178."
Reconstructed Yankee Bill Diehl holds forth on how he came to love the South. He quotes his mentor, Ralph Gill of the Atlanta Constitution, "We must work to make a better North, South, West or New England, because in so doing we make a better America."
The inimitable Anne Rivers Siddons holds forth on the difficulties of finding a bowl of real Southern grits while on book tour in the great Fly-Over Land.
Stuart Woods, Eugenia Price, and Valerie Richards Jackson are just a few of the star-studded literary lights who shine in these pages. What a great idea to showcase Georgia's finest literary talents along with its best culinary talents!

I'll vouch for the recipes, too. I've been married to a full-fledged (and also reconstructed) Yankee for more years that you can count on all the digits of several people and when his side of the family came to visit recently, of course they expected Southern food from the only bona-fide Southerner in the family. So I served Crème Fraiche Biscuits with Chevre and Country Ham Butter, Spicy Grits Casserole and German Pancake with Peach Compote when they converged on me for a reunion brunch. They loved the food, asked for recipes and when I showed them the cookbook, they enthused over that, too!

Every recipe I've tried from TRUE GRITS has been delicious and has garnered raves from my family and friends. Therefore, I can unequivocally give it the highest recommendation from a cook's point of view as well as from one who values -- indeed, treasures -- a good read.

A seder for 19 with seating for 9
Will some have to stand while the others recline?

A rhyming tale for young and old presents a new solution to an old dilemma -- the overcrowded seder. A Passover classic.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for tikes.......2002-03-30

This darling 37-page book offers even the smallest of children--babies and toddlers too--a funny Passover feast.

The poem has barely more than 200 words, but hilariously recounts the arrival of guests--while counting their 19 noses, 38 thumbs, freckles and the hosts' insufficient chairs. It wanders through places they might find seats, including "in the attic,/ Or on bookshelves in pairs,"... "in the sink/ Soaking suds with the pans," camped out "in the carport" or in "empty trash cans."

For the Kiddush (blessing the wine) the family will stand, so that's no problem, but the child narrator knows that sitting down for the meal will land "half on the floor." He thinks of stacking everyone in one chair, and reading "the Haggadah/ Sing songs filled with hope,/ With one book at the bottom/And a long periscope."

I won't spoil any of the glorious special effects. Suffice it to say, readers will delight in the book's dipping of greens, funny hiding of matzah and hysterical asking of four questions. (Even Elijah brings a laugh.) Children also love the simple pen and ink drawings that bring this light-heartedness to life. Alyssa A. Lappen

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Book about Seder.......2000-03-22

What I like most about this book is that it is so differentfrom the average Jewish children's book. Instead of going through theseder and what each thing symbolizes, it tells a humorous story about a girl worried that there will not be sufficient seating at her family's seder table. Its a funny book, that just happens to occur during Pesach. A real treat.

5 out of 5 stars A great story in rhyme for the younger set (ages 3-8).......1999-01-02

A very clever poem about celelbrating the Seder when there is not enough room. Especially nice for non-orthodox families because the characters could be us and the traditions referenced in the book are probably familiar to most readers even if not orthodox. And the last line of the book makes me smile time and time again. I think I may it enjoy it more than my children. Get it. You can't go wrong.

I was pleased to find this anthology of mythological American women, but disappointed in the telling of their tales. My granddaughters lost interest and I could see the curtain fall on their curiosity. Not a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Acid Test.......2002-06-16

I'm a teacher in the Oakland Schools in California and these tales are wonderful to read aloud. Particularly to black children because it picks up the nuances of the spoken word as they hear it. The criticism by a reviewer that the tales aren't true to their source is irrelevant. So what? These tales are for fairly young children, grades 3 through 5. Naturally, they've been cleaned up a little. I can't see by doing this that the author has robbed them of their energy or humor.

The children love them. That's all that counts.

Judith Cohen

It makes sense that Groucho, master of the wise crack, a man who kept company with S.J. Perelman and George S. Kaufman, should be a wonderful author in his own right, but you won't know how wonderful unless you have this book. Its editor, Robert S. Bader, has collected the funniest essays, columns and letters that Groucho composed during his long career. Writing with a wit and love of non-sequitur that influenced the young Woody Allen, Groucho also displays real warmth of character in these short pieces, an abiding love of family and of living.

Book Description

Groucho Marx was a comic genius who conquered stage, film, radio and television. But he was also a gifted writer -- the author of a play, two screenplays, seven books, and over 199 articles and essays.

This collection presents for the first time the best of Groucho Marx's short comic pieces, written over a period of almost fifty years between 1925 and 1973 for the The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Saturday Evening Post, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and other newspapers and magazines.

Here is the one and only Groucho on his family, his days in vaudeville, his careeer, World War II, taxes, and other topics such as his love of a good cigar, his chronic insomnia, "Why Harpo Doesn't Talk," and "The Truth About Captain Spalding." The familar irreverence, word-play, and a dash of self-deprecation bring Groucho's wiscracking voice to life in these pages, firmly establishing him as one of the world's great humorists.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best of Groucho, literally!.......2000-10-11

Though best known as a performer, Groucho Marx always cherished the opportunity to express himself in writing. Robert S. Bader has collected a large number of his short works -- some of them autobiographical, others comic essays and letters -- most of which have never been published before in book form. Unlike the recent collection "The Essential Groucho," by Stefan Kanfer, which contained excerpts from Marx Brothers plays, films, and television shows, all the pieces collected here were written by Groucho himself (or were they? Bader's long, well-written introduction discusses the contributions of Groucho's silent collaborator, Arthur Sheekman). Not every one is a gem, but on the whole the collection is delightful. A "must" addition to any Marx collection.

4 out of 5 stars Not as funny as the Groucho Letters..........2000-04-30

A lot of the material in this book shows up in many of Groucho's other books, but the new material is very entertaining. Not quite as funny as the Groucho Letters, but a must for any Groucho fan...

5 out of 5 stars groucho marx: and other short stories...........1999-12-09

One of the greatest books I've ever read on Groucho's written humor! Very complete! New info for old fans! I loved it! ....

5 out of 5 stars Reiner Resurrects Groucho for this Stellar Performance.......1997-07-10

Groucho was a funny man, we know that. He was an essayist, maybe we didn't know that. He wanted to be known foremost as a writer. Here's proof he should be.

This collection of Marx's essays is read by Carl Reiner. Reiner reads all of Groucho's works with a stunning facimile af Groucho's voice. It's as if Groucho himself has come back just to read this collection. Reiner's innate comedian's timing rounds out this performance making one of the best recorded performances I've had the pleasure of listening to.

Guaranteed to make a Groucho lover out of anyone. Even your kids..

Product Description

Music fans who grew up with Rock and Roll in Cleveland remember a golden age. We were young, so was the music, and the sense of freedom and excitement the Rock and Roll scene delivered was electric. There were so many great clubs, like the Agora, where every big band seemed to break in the 1970s. The trendsetting radio stations, from A.M.'s WIXY 1260 to F.M.'s groundbreaking "Home of the Buzzard", WMMS. And all those memorable shows. The free Coffee Break Concerts--remember Springsteen just when he hit it big? The gigantic World Series of Rock. Nights on the lawn at Blossom (including local favorites the Michael Stanley Band and their record-setting sellout streak).
This book collects the favorite memories of Clevelanders who made the scene: fans, musicians, DJs, reporters, club owners, and more.
Includes rare photographs and other memorabilia such as concert posters, bumper stickers, pins, and ticket stubs.

3 out of 5 stars Cleveland rock(ed).......2007-05-07

It was a fun look back at some of the bands, clubs, concerts, etc. that I spent time in the 70's with. I even saw some quotes and pictures of long time friends.

I thought there were a few glaring omissions though. Devo, who must have sold as many records as almost anyone else from Northeast Ohio, and was an influential force in music, barely warrants a mention. Also, from a media standpoint, Scene Magazine played a big part in exposing people to both local and national bands, and they too are barely referred to.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun Book (www.deannaadams.com).......2007-02-20

Glad to see yet another book on the interesting and richly diverse talent so often associated with the Cleveland music scene. Carlo Wolff has put together a great collection of fun memories and stories - some of which this native hadn't heard before! And lots of photos every nostalgic baby boomer will enjoy. This book reiterates the fascinating impact this area had on pop culture. And proves there are more reasons to reflect on those days than just a trip down memory lane.

5 out of 5 stars Hail Cleveland Rock and Roll.......2007-01-27

If you are from Cleveland, or lived here during the 60s through the 80s, you'll know what this book is about. Carlo Wolff covers the high and the low points of what was Cleveland Rock and Roll during that time. If you need a rerun to what was happening in the music scene in Cleveland, this is it. The book relects a history that ties itself to sounds and places that are gone for good. Elvis, Joey and the Continentals, the Beatles, The Choir, Rastus, Rolling Stones, David Bowie; they were either from here or played here. All of them left an important and permanent mark in the tapestry of Cleveland music. It's all in here. Learn how Carlo Wolff has woven this thirty year history of Cleveland Rock into a very entertaining book.

5 out of 5 stars Thumbs up for Wolff's Cleveland Rock & Roll Memories.......2007-01-21

I was very delighted to get my copy of Cleveland Rock & Roll Memories. Unlike alot of rock books that I have read in the past, his book contained not only memories from players and club owners, but also from the fans!!
As a boomer who attended a ton of Cleveland shows and haunted some of the clubs he writes about, I could not put the book down, until I had absorbed every page.
A great read for anyone who grew up in the golden era of Cleveland Rock & Roll, or for those who wonder why Cleveland was picked for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The only thing I want is another book with more memories from the clubs and concerts from Cleveland

Book Description

On a dark night of howling rain and booming thunder, Jackson and Millicent MacGruder welcome a new baby girl into their lives. Imagine their surprise when she sits up, thanks them for bringing her into the world, and informs them that she's quite partial to the name Rose.
So begins the story of Thunder Rose, who drinks her milk straight from the cow and prefers the company of her bull, Tater, to any kitten or puppy. Rose is capturing outlaws by the time she's a teenager, but she always has time to find joy in a song. Jerdine Nolen and Kadir Nelson have created a tall tale--and a powerful new African American heroine--to delight readers of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Girls rule!.......2007-10-04

Everyone knows Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill.......now here comes a hero from literature's Tall Tales for the girls in your life. Thunder Rose is fun, funny and exhibits true "girl power".

4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Written, A Classic!.......2007-09-23

My son and I really enjoyed this book. We were lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this book a couple of years ago at a NCTE conference. My son took it to class for "Book Day" and all the students enjoyed it too. What makes this book unique is that this is a tall tale about a young African American girl. It's a lesson to all children that heroes/heroines come in all sizes and colors!!

4 out of 5 stars a fun tall tale.......2005-06-30

This is a good book for young children- especially young black girls. A strong heroine to breath fresh inspiration and courage to young minds. OK, and it's just fun to read and look at too!

4 out of 5 stars Rave Review of Thunder Rose.......2005-02-10

Thunder Rose is a story of a young girl who displays characteristics that are bigger than life. The story starts with the reader finding out that Rose is born with the power of thunder and lightning coursing through her veins. This power gives her the ability to perform unimaginable tasks. For example, she is able to talk at the time of her birth, lift a cow my herself, twist scraps of metal with her bare hands, and stop a powerful tornado. Throughout the book there are on-going clues that allow the reader to see beyond the powers she displays on the outside to the person she is on the inside. The descriptive language and detailed illustrations keep the reader engaged and excited to reach the powerful ending.

5 out of 5 stars Worth a second look.......2004-12-01

I disagree with E.Bird ... Thunder Rose is a gem! The story rises, falls and builds lyrically when read aloud to a young one (I think that actually reading the story out loud makes the difference). The strength of lightning and thunder in this young African-American cowgirl is inspiring, as are the illustrations. An excellent tall tale!

    Book Description

Conceived as a marketing device by nineteenth-century publishers hoping to gain a share of the lucrative almanac market, The Crockett Almanacs became the best-selling and longest-running series of comic almanacs published in the United States before the Civil War. Michael Lofaro explores one of the Almanacs' most entertaining and intriguing aspects: the adventures of backwoods women. Their portrayals, which range from the heroic to the satiric, from the comic to the sentimental, create uproarious laughter and provoke serious commentary-often in the same tale.

    3 out of 5 stars Competent retelling.......2000-06-14

Stoutenberg competently retells the familiar stories of Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, Stormalong, Mike Fink, Davy Crockett, Johnny Applessed, John Henry, and Joe Magarac in a way that stresses the common tall tale elements and should be appealing to upper-elementary school readers. Useful in schools when balanced with some of the more recent and sprightlier stories featuring heroines.
