Book Description
Featuring case vignettes from nearly 30 years of Dr. Yudofsky's clinical practice and incorporating the knowledge of gifted clinicians, educators, and research scientists with whom he has collaborated throughout that time, Fatal Flaws: Navigating Destructive Relationships With People With Disorders of Personality and Character uniquely captures the rapidly increasing body of clinical and research information about people with severe and persistent personality and character disorders.
Within these pages, the author brings to life the psychopathologies of personality and character disorders through vivid vignettes based on composites of his many patients and their most important relationshipswhile meticulously changing the identifying facts and relevant details to protect confidentiality.
Covering the clinical course, treatment, genetics, biology, psychology, and destructive consequences of hysterical (histrionic), narcissistic, antisocial, paranoid, obsessive-compulsive, addictive, borderline, and schizotypal personality disorders, Fatal Flaws stands out in the literature for these powerful reasons:
- It is written for an unusually broad audience, from mental health students and trainees of all disciplines, to highly experienced clinicians, to patients who suffer from or are in destructive relationships with people with personality disorders.
- It is a hybridpart psychiatric textbook for clinicians and part self-help manual for patients and clients with personality and character disorders.
- It is designed to supplement treatment by providing patients with practical, evidence-based information about personality disorders and character flaws.
- It is particularly valuable to patients who are in psychotherapy, in part, because they are entangled in destructive relationships with people with disorders of personality and/or character.
- It is written in the first person, with the author directly communicating with a patient who either has a personality or character disorder or is in an important relationship with a person who has such a disorder.
- It is useful for people who are uncertain whether they or their loved ones have personality or character disorders, and who want to know more about these conditions and their treatments before making a decision about securing the help of a mental health professional.
Fatal Flaws: Navigating Destructive Relationships With People With Disorders of Personality and Character is a compelling volume that provides the essential information and a realistic sense of the clinical experience required to inform, orient, and support novice mental health professionals and seasoned practitioners alike as they face the ongoing challenges of treating patients or clients with personality or character disorders. It should also prove to be an invaluable resource for those who wish practical and effective help in understanding and changing their destructive relationships with people who have severe and persistent disorders of personality and/or character.

eye opener.......2007-06-08
I wish that I had read this book long ago. Persons with personality disorders can cause serious damage in the lives of those around them, yet most persons know far too little about these disorders. What I found most useful were the first three chapters, wherein Dr. Yudofsky offers valuable tools to discern whether others may have personality disorders and also nine helpful guiding principles. But the other chapters give the reader an overview of what each of the disorders may look like. Great intro to the topic.
FATAL FLAWS.......2006-07-23
I read and re-read this book marking each page of those in my family and others in my life who clearly exhibited many of the
symptoms and disorders so clearly explained with case studies and symptomatic charts..Dr. Yudofsky's ability to pinpoint whether these FLAWS and FATAL FLAWS can be treated was excellant...
I highly recommend this book to the lay person or professional in need of THEIR OWN role clarification with FATALLY FLAWED people in their lives.
Ineffectual Insight.......2006-05-27
This book is the work of a medical bureaucrat struggling to claim a legacy of insight. In short, a failure in motive as well as design and execution.
An essential book to understand personality disorders.......2005-07-16
Stuart Yudofsky has done it again. He has written a book which not only has extensive clinical descriptions of the different personality disorders,he deals with the treatments which are standard, acceptable and evidence based. The language of the book is eloquent and easy to read -- readers do not stumble on the psychiatric jargons. I think APA and Stuart yudofsky has done a great service to the general public through publishing such a book. This book will also be extremely helpful for the psychiatric trainees because the case studies reflect the extensive knowledge and empathy of an astute and expert clinician.
I have a few criticisms -- Dr Yudofsky has not covered a few clinically important PDs like passive agressive or depressive personalities-- i am not exactly sure why that is the case. besides schema therapy and DBT seems to be underrepresented, but these therapies have a minor but significant and growing evidence base.
I wholeheartedly wish wide publication of this piece of work.
EVERYONE MUST OWN THIS BOOK!!!.......2005-04-06
This book is outstanding and has helped me and my friends tremendously. Anyone who is in a relationship or who has ever experienced relationship trouble should own this book. There should be a copy in every household!

Killers go free...........2006-09-17
Have you ever stopped to think that cases such as Tommy's, whose innocence I believe in, the person or persons that committed a murder are still free to kill again?
After being involved in a case of someone I care about and having the police, prosecutors, and the judge betray that person, I started reading stories of other real life people who had also been betrayed by the police, prosecutors, judges, well... the whole "justice" system. One of the first books I read was "Fatal Flaw". After reading this book, with my heart breaking for Tommy and his mother, I contacted Tommy. He became a very dear friend of mine, as did his precious mother. Tommy has lost both his father and his mother while being in prison. I cannot think of a more hurtful thing in the world than to be in prison, an innocent person, and to lose someone you love. Not to mention Tommy's wife having been murdered, and not by him.
This book is the most wonderful book about the way the lack of justice is allowed in our country. It is easy to read, easy to follow and understand. Phillip Finch is a wonderful author who did not go into the telling of this story because he believed in Tommy's innocence. Because of his ability to do research and his honesty, he had to come to the conclusion that Tommy is innocent. If you read this story, you will see why he and others thought Tommy could be guilty. You will think... wait! I thought he is suppose to be innocent. Keep reading.
You might also think on this while reading. Other facts have come to light since the book was written to prove even further that Tommy is not just "not guilty" but totally innocent. Where are those who committed these murders? Not in prison! Does that worry you? Does it make anyone safer because "someone" is in prison for the murders? Sadly that does satisfy too many people.
Does it bother you that this can happen to anyone? Maybe you or someone you love? You might think that it never would, but if you are in the wrong place at the right time for the police, you could have evidence put together to make you or someone you love look guilty. Think about that! Read this story. You can read this book online at no cost. Do a search for Tommy Zeigler.
One thing that I would like to tell you about this book that was most shocking to me is concerning the jury. Did you know that other than physical abuse, a jury can do or say just about anything to get other jurors to change their mind. Nothing is suppose to leave the jury room about what is said or done during the trial. Nothing is recorded. In this book you will learn how a juror was allowed to hold a gun to another juror's head and pull the trigger. This woman was a hold out for "not guilty". The juror wanted her to change her mind. The woman tried to tell the judge, but he would not allow the woman to talk. He did not want a mistrial. Finally the woman managed to get a message to the judge. He had a doctor write her a prescription for Valium and she was told to take the medication. She finally could hold out no longer, and caved in from the pressure, never believing Tommy was guilty.
Tommy is innocent. The system is flawed. Real killers are going free. Is that okay with you? What if you are the next person that gets murdered because of a case like this, convicting an innocent person, especially when the state knows the person on trial is innocent. How sad and scary! How unfair for the innocent and it brings no justice for the victims that are killed.
Fatal Flaw: A True Story of Malice and Murder in a Small Southern Town, by Phillip Finch.......2005-09-08
A true-crime account involving the brutal murders of a wife, her parents, and a by-stander, this book could also fall into the cold case category as unsolved. The convicted, William Thomas Zeigler, is presently on death row, appeals exhausted, but still hoping for justice. Through the years he has had a large number of supporters, legal, forensic, and others interested in his appalling situation who believe he should be exonerated. The reader will be shocked at the magnitude of the crime, the investigation(s), and the astonishing conclusions.
Southern Fried Justice.......2003-05-26
That Southern justice can be an oxymoron is no surprise. But this book lays out in stunning detail how the system can close ranks to create an impenetrable thicket of corruption. It methodically deconstructs the state's case to reveal a disturbing array of official misinformation, mistakes and misconduct. The case is no less pertinent today, almost 30 years later, for the defendant still resides on death row. Perhaps the most stunning aspect is that the case has never been successfully appealed as it wended its way North through Federal courts. One suspects that the trial of a wealthy white businessman who killed his wife and three bystanders for insurance hardly makes even the most strident card-carrying ACLU member's heart race. Indeed, a drug dealer who murdered a policeman has more success in the courtroom - overturning a case on nearly identical grounds under which the defendant's is not. How did he find himself in the Kafkaesque struggle? He broke perhaps the highest law of the deep South one year earlier by coming to the defense of a black man. The guilt in this frightening indictment of our legal process does not end with the defendant: It does not even begin there. Unfortunately, however, neither does it end with the original perpetrators of the crime. If you liked "The Thin Blue Lie", you will love this book.
Why Some Death Row Inmates Get Life?.......1999-04-07
In 1975, Winter Garden, Florida was a small, one-horse migrant labor and truck stop town bypassed by the supposed prosperity brought to Central Florida by the Disney Company. Spared the rapicious raping of the Kissimmee-St Cloud area, with its swamp draining killing of animals, Winter Garden remained as it had been--a lower class white working community dependent on trucking and citrus for its existence.
Enter William Thomas Zeigler who, by the author's own description drove oldsmobiles and detested rock and roll music. Unknown to many residents, the Zeigler family wealth stood at just over one million dollars--a princely sum in the 1970s. The quiet, modest veneer of the Zeigler family was broken by the existence of sexual problems between Tommy and Eunice Zeigler. Two weeks before the murder of Eunice, the couple stopped having intercourse with Eunice threatening to go to a fertility specialist in Orlando. Rumors abounded that Tommy was homosexual and a member of a sex ring of important local men. The author points out that Zeigler commited two unforgiveable crimes. One, he helped a black man retain a liquor license in the face of local and state opposition. Two, he helped break up a loan sharking ring manned by members of the Orange County (Orlando) Sherrif's Department. Later that year, the Sherrif, Dave Starr, resigned under pressure and his chief deputy, Leigh MacEachern, wne to jail convicted of charges of official corruption.
Finch outlines in great detail the malfeasance of police and prosecutors. First, sherrif's deputies trampled evidence at the crime scene. Later, judges and FBI authorities joined in to complete a fait accompli ensuring the swift journey of Mr. Zeigler to Florida's death row, where he remains to this day. Despite having two of the finest criminal defense lawyers in orlando--Ed Kirkland and Terry Hadley, Zeigler stood no chance of even getting a routine continuance or investigator access to the crime scene. Additionally, Finch outlines how key witnesses were not interviewed nor called to trial leaving the reader no doubt that the fix was in. Finch leaves the reader wondering an age-old question--how can a nation that calls itslef a democracy allow such malfeasance in its criminal justice system?
I have a special interest in this book having lived in Orlando at the time of the crime and having visited the crime scene as recently as last year. Finch has written an important, readable indictment of southern justice.

Fatal Flaw is a rare delight: a legal thriller with freshness and vitality, qualities too often lacking in this sometimes-tired genre. This third entry in the Victor Carl series opens with a bang, as Victor finds fellow lawyer Guy Forrest on the front stoop of his lover's house, stark naked in the pouring rain, a gun beside him, the lover's bloody corpse on the bed inside. He sure looks guilty--but then, little is as it looks in this exceedingly well-plotted tale. The first 30 pages alone deliver several jolting revelations that change what we thought we knew, and the surprises keep coming right up to the last few pages.
Fortunately, William Lashner is as fine a wordsmith as he is a plotter. The settings are crisply evoked, from Philadelphia and Las Vegas to the dirt-poor Appalachians. All the characters are vivid, and a few--including the murder victim--are well-nigh unforgettable. But it's the narrative voice of Victor Carl that really carries the book. Cynical, funny, streetwise, and ethically flexible, he's an exceptionally engaging guy. And, like some of the wisecracking private eyes he resembles, he can deliver both breezy sarcasm and real emotional power. My suggestion: Reach past those other legal thrillers and put Fatal Flaw at the top of your reading list. --Nicholas H. Allison
Book Description
Some victims deserve nothing less than the truth . . .
Ethically adventurous Philadelphia lawyer Victor Carl usually does the right thing, but often for the wrong reasons. When old law school classmate Guy Forrest is accused of murdering his beautiful lover, Hailey Prouix, in their Main Line love nest, Carl agrees to represent him -- while keeping silent about his own prior romantic involvement with the victim, and his present determination to see that his client is punished for the brutal crime. But once Carl sets the machinery of retribution in motion, it may be impossible to stop it, even after his certainty begins to crack. Now Victor Carl must race across the country to uncover shocking truths: Who, really, was Hailey Prouix? And why is a killer still waiting in her shadow?
Download Description
Lust will make a fool of any man, but it is only love that can truly ruin him."" So says Victor Carl, the ethically adventurous Philadelphia lawyer who usually ends up doing the right thing, but, as his law partner says, often for all the wrong reasons. Late one night Victor gets a panicked phone call from an old law school classmate. Guy Forrest claims he has just found the body of his fiance lying murdered in the house they shared. The victim is Hailey Prouix, for whose love Guy had abandoned his children, his job, his wife, his life. Hailey had mesmerized every man she ever met -- including, unbeknownst to Guy, Victor Carl. Convinced that Guy is Hailey's killer, Victor agrees to represent him, all the while secretly vowing to see justice done, whatever the cost. The plan would have to be dirty, base, vile, the plan would have to exhibit a complete lack of moral fiber in the soul of the deranged maniac who dreamed it up. I was just the man for the job. But when Victor's certainty begins to crack, he embarks on a quest that will take him from Philadelphia to Las Vegas to the valleys of West Virginia and back again. He digs further and further into Hailey Prouix's past and discovers that nothing is as simple as it had seemed, especially the woman he thought he loved. Who was Hailey Prouix? Behind the answer lurks a killer. As Guy's murder trial heads toward its shattering conclusion, Victor must find the brutal truth before the mechanism of retribution he himself has set into motion falls like a hatchet, smack on his client's head.

Another great Victor Carl adventure!!.......2007-09-29
William Lashner has become one of my favorite writers because each book is a carefully crafted piece of entertaining and mysterious fiction. Engaging, gripping, and unique, this one from Lashner is another great one. Do yourself a favor and grab anything he writes.
Very entertaining.......2007-04-05
Victor Carl, the most unorthodox lawyer outside of Andy Carpenter (from the Rosenfelt novels) really goes overboard in his courtroom tactics, his lawyer integrity, and his warped sense of right and wrong in this fun novel. He is summoned to the home of a man (Guy Forrest) who Victor assumes has murdered Carl's clandestine love interest who was Guy's girlfriend. Victor, in a breach of his ethical responsibility to be free from any personal prejudices with his client agrees to take the case. His first subconscious thought is to sabotage his client's defense so he receives the maximum penalty.
As things progress, Victor realizes that his client may in fact be innocent and he may have ruined his client's chance for any acquittal. With a few leads, from some objects that Victor has secretly taken from his client's home on the night of the murder, Victor tries to track down some answers that may come from a "questionable" accident that had happened many years before.
With courtroom scenes reminiscent of "My Cousin Vinny," Victor pulls off many theatrical tactics (ex. Objecting during the prosecutor's opening statements) that the judge seems to allow with not holding him in contempt. This is a very enjoyable book. I would have given it a full five stars but there was one loose end involving fingerprints that the author did not seem to tie up.
fatal flaw, fatal flaw.......2006-06-13
William Lashner is an author who should never have taken that writer's workshop, never have taken that writer's workshop. He is an extremely talented author, but he has picked up some mannerisms that almost become fatal flaws, they almost become fatal flaws. For example, apparently somebody taught him to repeat for effect, for effect. I almost tossed the book aside, because the characters are not very appealing people, no not even the main character. Later I was glad I didn't, because once Lashner got into the story-telling and forgot what he learned in the writer's workshop, it really took off and was very good.
So grit your teeth and struggle through the beginning, because it gets much better. Much better.
One of the best legal thrillers I've ever read. .......2006-02-28
A morally dubious attorney, Victor Carl finds his friend, Guy Forrest, naked on the steps outside of his home. Crying, Guy tells him that Haley Prouix has been murdered upstairs. The Police think Guy killed Haley, and Carl agrees to defend Guy in court, but Carl doesn't tell him that he was having an affair with Haley. In love with Haley, Carl's convinced that Guy killed her, and he's ready to make sure he pays. But as the facts of Haley's past come to light, questions arise. For instance, just how well can you really know a woman? The ending does not disappoint.
Fatal Flaw.......2005-10-22
A love triangle of the most extreme kind. Main character, Victor Carl, is a lawyer from Philadelphia. When a former classmate and fellow lawyer, Guy Forrest, is accused of murdering his lover, Hailey Prouix, Victor comes to the rescue. The only problem is Guy's lover was Victor's lover too! So instead of just defending his client, he is trying to find the murderer to his secret girlfriend while trying to keep the affair quiet. Victor's quest for the truth leads him back into Hailey's childhood. On the way, he gets ran off the road by a shady figure, meets her former boyfriend, meets her uncle in the fancy nursing home, then uncovers the mysterious death of her old friend Jesse Sterrett in the rock quarry. All of this leading up to the trial and uncovering the true mastermind behind the scenes.
The author, William Lashner, has become a well-recognized lawyer novelist. He has written books such as "Past Due," "The Hostile Witness," and "Bitter Truth." "Fatal Flaw" was published in 2003. William Lashner graduated from Swarthmore College and Iowa Writer's Workshop. He was a criminal prosecutor with the United States Department of Justice. He also lives in Philadelphia with his family.
I thought this novel was OK. It started out well enough, but it began to slow down three-fourths of the way through. I found the novel a little wordy especially when describing the scenery, which made it harder for me to want to read it. Although, the book is very realistic and is well written, the plot is just too slow for my tastes. The novel has potential to be an enjoyable for someone who really likes lawyer novels, or just likes intelligent mystery novels.
Book Description
Materials drawn from The Face That Demonstrates The Farce of Evolution (ISBN 0-8499-4272-1) Today's generation is bombarded with theories about humankind and its origins. The danger for Christians lies in the wealth of misinformation and miscommunication about simple biblical truths such as:
- How and when the world began
- Whether humans are unique or merely a happenstance of evolution
- The distinction between humankind and other living creatures
- The evolution of life on this planet
- The spiritual dimensions of the human soul
Hank Hanegraff keeps Christians from falling prey to corrupting scientific speculation about the origins of life and reminds us that we are God's creation. This common sense approach puts the concept of evolution in the grasp of everyday Christians and reminds us that ultimately the key to our purpose in this life comes from understanding whose we are and who created us.
Customer Reviews:
Basic Refutation.......2007-01-26
As a Christian, I've read my share of evolution-refuting books. This book is small. It's not in depth. But considering its miniature size, it still makes some very good points and poses challenging questions. It manages to pack a decent amount of information into a small package. However, if you're looking for a dig-deep, in-depth analysis and refutation of evolution, try one of McDowell's 800 page books instead.
Religious myths versus scientific arguments.......2006-09-21
Hank is committed to the idea that Genesis, itself composed of competing tribal legends from the Bronze Age, somehow contains scientific statements. His religious faith compels him to reject the preponderance of scientific evidence in favor of evolution.
Useful scientific books that discuss evolution without religious bias include
Brian Charlesworth, Evolution, A Very Short Introduction (contains an excellent bibliography)
Simon Morris, The Crucible of Creation
Richard Leakey, Origins Reconsidered
Edward J. Larson, Evolution: The Remarkable History of a Scientific Theory
Yeah, And Gravity's Not Real Either!.......2004-08-26
Hank Hanegraaff, "Bible Answer Man," is reduced to little more than a Christian typist in this ultra-thin (in pages, scope and intelligence) collection of misinformation, out-of-context quoting and outright duplicity. Having no coherent theories of his own, Hanegraaff's book is nothing more than endless citations of Christian "scientists'" published, absurd evolution-bashing hypotheses. He cites renown pseudoscientist and creationist idiot Duane T. Gish (universally disputed, debunked and disregarded in the legitimate scientific community) no less than 25 times. And Hanegraaff's references to actual scientific theorists, such as Gould, et al, are constantly filtered through Gish's and other Creationist morons' truth-concealing works. Let's leave science to the scientists.
What the evolutionists DON'T want you to know!.......2004-03-18
Exactly as advertised, this "impact-sized" book equips you to easily absorb and recall the strongest arguments against naturalism and evolution. Void of filler and unnecessary content, this is the "best of the best" presented in Hank's easy to remember style. Don't let the compact size (or ridiculous review) fool you. The content is solid. Well done!
Useful book in Hank's Excellent series.......2003-09-04
Like the other books in this series (Prayer of Jesus, The Covering, The Third Day), it is concise and packed with info. Great resource and makes a great gift or something to give skeptics.
While Hank makes many valid points, skeptics might take it more seriously if he didn't so heavily reference young-earth creationists. Young-earthism is probably one of the biggest stumbling blocks for skeptics and Christians. It is unbiblical and unscientific. Hank often rebukes young-earthers for their emotional tactics, but never addresses the fact that they pose one of the greatest apologetic problems for Christianity. For more on this see Hugh Ross' "Creation & Time," Don Stoner's "A New Look at an Old Earth" and Darrick Dean's "Is the Truth Out There?"

Book Description
A serial killer is targeting the women of Miers, Colorado, and so far the police have nothing to go on. Detective Casey O'Toole is assigned to jump-start the investigation, and she discovers two unsettling facts: the victims were all patients of a prominent plastic surgeon, and each of them bears an uncanny resemblance to herself.
Ruled out as a suspect, Dr. Mark Adams offers to assist Casey in any way he can and, despite her resistance, their relationship quickly turns personal. The pressure on Casey to find the killer mounts steadily as terror grips the small mountain community. Then a stunning twist leads Casey to the deadly truth -- and to the face of a killer nearly as familiar as her own.
Customer Reviews:
I liked it but...........2007-01-25
Detective Casey O'Toole and her partner Dennis are called to a crime scene that appears to be related to a series of killings from another jurisdiction. When Casey is selected to head a multi-department task force, she is met with resistance from the inept county sheriff but manages to rise above the muck. When the victims are linked to a sexy and prominent plastic surgeon, the widowed Casey finds herself attracted to a potential suspect. Dr. Mark Adams is soon cleared, but continues to find reasons to bump into Casey as the attraction is definitely mutual. Casey shares an attribute of the victims - her curly red hair. When an attempt is made on her life, she has to wonder if she's the next victim.
Light on suspense (as many have mentioned, it is easy to figure out within the first few chapters), overall, it has an interesting plot. With the exception of Casey and Mark, most of the characters are not fully developed, the dialogue is pretty stale (do you know anyone under 70 who says "oh dear?"), and Mark's premature protestations of love within days of meeting her make the romance unbelievable. There was just too much going on - between the murders, the office politics, the delivery of her cousin's twins, the family dynamics, and the romance... the story just seemed incomplete. I love Gray's plots, but her inability to create realistic dialogue and overpopulated storylines keep her books from being 5-star reads.
not quite "romantic suspense".......2006-08-27
I just finished reading this book and was fairly pleased. For me, this was definitely leaning more towards the romantic then the suspense. Good story though.
The ending was a bit of a suprise. This was my first Ginna Gray book and I will give her others a try.
Romance but not much suspense........2006-05-15
I enjoyed the romantic elements of this book, along with the charming family characters. My main problem with it is the lack of suspense. There were tense moments but, unfortunately, I guessed who the murderer is fairly early on. I won't give it away, but there were some very obvious clues and none of the other potential suspects came across as being very likely. Overall, it's an enjoyable read but don't expect any "knock your socks off" surprises.
Is it worth reading?.......2005-07-19
Despite the fact that I guessed who the killer was rather quickly, I still think it is undoubtedly a great novel. Some might argue that it is your basic cop chases killer novel which seems to overrun the world today, but it is written with such elegance that it cannot be so simply lumped into that category.
Her characters are colorful and somehow this writer just sucks you in. It's almost impossible to put down. She has a unique style of writing that flows into your mind.
With a lot of books it is sometimes difficult to keep all of the details straight because you're supplied with too much information; she gives you just the right amount. A lot of books that I have read also have unnatural dialogue, and oftentimes characters seem to do things that just don't fit with their personalities, Ginna Gray does not have this problem. In this book the characters are not only fascinating but also well written, and well liked.
This is the only book that I have read by this author, but I do fully intend on buying another one of her books. I found it to be a good book to read in the bathtub, and that is when she transported me to Mears Colorado.
2.25 stars - Could have been much, much better .......2005-06-13
Ginna Gray captured my interest with "Witness," and I eagerly snatched a copy of her latest, "Fatal Flaw," when I saw it at the bookstore.
Total dud!
While the serial killer plot is well-developed - though I figured out within the first few pages who the killer was - the book seemed to deteriorate at the end. It was as though the author was pulled in too many directions - from family scuffles, to births, to shootings, to chasing a serial killer and - oh, yeah - two people, like, falling in love or something.
The last five chapters seemed disjointed - they just didn't flow like the beginning of the book. And sometimes it was like just reading words on a page - the characters somehow became sterile, cookie cutter, and reading their dialog was like watching a really bad school play.
And don't even get me started on the lack of development of the killer. It would have been good to have a few sections from the killer's POV, so we could see into his sorry, black soul. Instead, we just sort of happen on the information about him at the very end of the book.
The author does try to put a few red herrings in there, but they really weren't that effective (but I read a lot of mysteries, so that may be the case).
And I couldn't relate to the heroine's love interest, Doc Mark Adams. Unlike FBI agent Sam Rawlins from "Witness," Adams doesn't seem as well-developed. He's hot, he loves his family and is in love with Det. Casey O'Toole, but we see these things as though through a dirty window. We don't get a "feel" for the doctor, his inner-most thoughts and feelings, his soul.
If you want to check this book out, make sure to get it used - don't pay full price.

WELL SAID.......2005-11-22
It never ceases to amaze me when Catholics primarily laymen, hostile ones at that, believe they know Catholicism better than everyone who is not, or is no longer a Catholic, but is well studied in the area. Mr. White does a fabulous job in demonstrating the teachings of the Church of Rome, (NOT WHAT MOST PRIESTS AND CATHOLIC APOLOGISTS ARE FEEDING TO THE MEDIA CONCERNING THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF VATICAN 2, the two are often quite different.) I discovered this myself during formation to be a Catholic priest and learning that I could quote more Papal Encyclicals than I could Scripture; and again the two are often at odds. Due to a tone of ergency, many Non-Catholics come across as being hostile to Catholics, this usually is not the intent, and I don't believe Mr. White is hostile, though he is very clear in voicing Rome's errors in plain language. If you're a Catholic or protestant you would benefit from this work. I recommend going into it without being defensive of your particular theology.
Don't bother! It's gonna hold up the end of my nightstand........2000-10-19
It never ceases to amaze me when non-Catholic apologists, hostile ones at that, believe they know Catholicism better than practicing Catholics. James White begins by presenting what the Catholic Church claims as its position and then tells us what it "really" is(according to him of course). Worst of all his tone is sometimes condescending and often outright offensive. He never mentions the Protestants he is at odds with, say Martin Luther on the True Presence or even R.C. Sproul. He appears well versed in the Church fathers and early church history, but somehow he is at odds with just about every historian(non-catholic ones) I've ever read. Go right to the source. The writings of the Church Fathers are readily available as is the catechism of the Catholic Church.
A critique on roman catholic doctrines.......1998-08-24
James White critiques roman catholic doctrines of salvation, the mass, the doctrines of purgatory, grace, the atonement of Jesus Christ, etc. His contention is that the Roman Church either has ignored Scripture or simply twisted the Scripture to maintain its doctrinal practices. He provides very good arguments concerning the Catholic Mass and the problems it faces in light of finished work of Christ on the Cross. He quotes extensively from Catholic sources aware of the fact that too often Catholics charge their critics with a lack of understanding of basic Catholic doctrine - the contention being that you would become a Catholic if you just understood what Catholic doctrine is all about. He makes very good use of footnotes in documenting his arguments.I would recommend his book as a good critique for those studying Roman Catholic doctrine. Book Description
Late one night Victor Carl gets a panicked phone call from an old law school classmate. Guy Forrest claims he has just found the body of his fiancé lying murdered in the house they shared.
Victor embarks on a quest that will take him from Philadelphia to Las Vegas to the valleys of West Virginia. He digs further into Hailey Prouix's past and discovers that nothing is as simple as it had seemed, especially the woman he thought he loved. As Guy's murder trial heads toward its shattering conclusion, Victor must find the brutal truth before the mechanism of retribution he himself has set into motion falls like a hatchet, smack on his client's head.

Not bad . . ........2000-06-19
I am a huge fan of British police procedurals and I was delighted to see a new team had been born. On the whole, Frank Smith's Fatal Flaw does not disappoint, but his second book in this series, Stone Dead is a much better read. Fatal Flaw's story is good and it runs smoothly and quickly. His two coppers, DCI Paget and DS Tregalles are likeable fellows, but I find that the Sergeant has a lot more personality than the somewhat stiff and blah Chief Inspector (Smith spends a little too much time torturing us with Paget's terrible luck in love). But, in the first book and the third (Candles for the Dead), Tregalles almost seems a minor character. All in all, the series is good and I can't wait for the fourth installment.
