5 out of 5 stars Challenging Fun.......2007-07-31

Based on a popular feature in the now defunct Life Magazine "Life: Picture Puzzle" has 90 puzzles in which readers look at two pictures of the same thing and try to find the differences between each puzzle. In a few instances, six pictures of the same thing are shown and readers have to find the one puzzle out of the six that has been changed. There are four levels of difficulty: Novice, Master, Expert and genius. For those who like a bit of an extra challenge, the editors suggest a completion time for each puzzle. While long-time readers of Life Magazine may recognize some of the puzzles, the editors reworked them with new changes. In fact, they use some of the same pictures in the book at different levels and with completely different changes.

"Life: Picture Puzzle" is a fun challenging puzzle book. I thought that with 90 puzzles in the book, the more puzzles I solved there would be repetition of the differences and it would be easier to solve the puzzles but that wasn't true. Some of the puzzles did have obvious changes including obvious color changes, but there were many puzzles in which I couldn't find all the changes. Several of the puzzles offer hints to some of the changes in either the title or description of the puzzle. The number of changes in the puzzles range from as little as six changes to as many as 20; the more changes, the harder the puzzle. The editors do a good job of sorting each puzzle into the appropriate level of difficulty. The Novice Section is easy enough and solvers should easily find the first five or six changes in each puzzle while having to search a bit for the last few. The more details in the picture in the puzzle, the harder it is to solve. "Easter Surprise" with six pictures where solvers have to find the different one was a nice change. The Master Puzzles give you more time to solve the puzzle and range from pretty easy to tricky and hard to solve. The easiest ones to solve are the ones where you have to pick the different picture out of six choices. The Expert Puzzles are tricky and tough with lots of subtle changes, some involving color changes. There aren't very many Genius Puzzles but they are indeed very hard, even the two where you have of find the different puzzle out of six. Fittingly, the last puzzle, "Final Exam" is extremely hard, with 20 changes to find. As an added bonus, several of the puzzles have an added change that is not found in the answer section. The book says to go to the Picture Puzzle Section on Life's website, but even though I followed the instructions in the book, I couldn't find the answer section on-line.

"Life: Picture Puzzle" is hours of challenging fun.

5 out of 5 stars Addicted to these!.......2007-07-24

This book is terrific fun, and gives hours of enjoyment if you like to spot the differences between pictures. I really liked the different difficulty levels, so you could really work on improving your skills. I hope there are many more of these type of books available, as I'm addicted to these now.

5 out of 5 stars What fun too !.......2007-05-13

This is a great followup to the original. I wish the book size had stayed the same as the first book. The hardest puzzles were the best. Still fun for both young and old.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and good for the mind.......2007-04-22

These puzzles are entertaining and a good challenge for the brain.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Mental Stimulation.......2007-04-06

Both my wife and I thought the book tremendously entertaining and a wonderful mental exercise. We can't wait for another one to come out.

Holidays on Ice is a collection of three previously published stories matched with three newer ones, all, of course, on a Christmas theme. David Sedaris's darkly playful humor is another common thread through the book, worming its way through "Seasons Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!!" a chipper suburban Christmas letter that spirals dizzily out of control, and "Front Row Center with Thaddeus Bristol," a vicious theatrical review of children's Christmas pageants. As always, Sedaris's best work is his sharply observed nonfiction, notably in "Dinah, the Christmas Whore," the tale of a memorable Christmas during which the young Sedaris learns to see his family in a new light. Worth the price of the book alone is the hilarious "SantaLand Diaries," Sedaris's chronicle of his time working as an elf at Macy's, covering everything from the preliminary group lectures ("You are not a dancer. If you were a real dancer you wouldn't be here. You're an elf and you're going to wear panties like an elf.") to the perils of inter-elf flirtation. Along the way, he paints a funny and sad portrait of the way the countless parents who pass through SantaLand are too busy creating an Experience to really pay attention to their children. In a sly way, it carries a holiday message all its own. Read it aloud to the adults after the kids have gone to bed. --Ali Davis

1 out of 5 stars Too dark for my taste.......2007-10-09

Huge disappointment. I have read three David Sedaris books previously and had found them laugh-out-loud funny. "Holidays on Ice" nearly ended up in the fireplace when I hit a particularly dark chapter. His humor has always been on the sarcastic side, which generally appeals to me, but I didn't find this book amusing. If I want to be horrified, I'll read Dean Koontz.

5 out of 5 stars Holidays on Ice: A Satire on the Holiday Season.......2007-09-21

"This afternoon I sat in the eighth-floor SantaLand office and was told, ` Congratulations, Mr. Sedaris. You are an elf.'" This is one of the many hilarious quotes from David Sedaris' novel Holidays on Ice which contains six enlightening Christmas stories. Also known for his other hilarious books Me Talk Pretty One Day and Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, middle aged humorist Sedaris writes about his own experiences and thoughts on the Christmas season.
In the first essay entitled "SantaLand Diaries," Sedaris tells his about his crazy encounters working as an elf in the department store Macy's after getting rejected from UPS. He describes the shoppers and fellow employees with sarcastic humor. He tells about his various jobs that he works, and explains about the Magic Window position. He has to stand there and exclaim, "Step on the Magic Star and look through the window, and you can see Santa!" One day he gets bored of saying the same fifteen words over and over again, so he decides to mix things up a bit. "Step on the Magic Star and you can see Cher and Mike Tyson!" People start to get upset when they sacrifice their spot in line to see Santa to go into the Magic Star line. Needless to say, David Sedaris is never positioned in the Magic Star line again.
The next essay, "Season's Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!!" is a fictional story about the ridiculousness of long family descriptions on Christmas cards. "He's made the honor roll every semester and there seems to be no stopping him!!! A year and a half left to go and already the job offers are pouring in! We love you, Kevin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" exclaims the narrator Mrs. Dunbar. Mrs. Dunbar's ideal world, however, soon comes crashing down when a stranger named Khe Sahn suddenly comes to live with them. As it turns out, Mrs. Dunbar's "perfect" husband had a daughter in Vietnam named Khe Sahn. As the story unfolds, Khe Sahn turns their world upside down.
"Dinah, the Christmas Whore" is another essay describing the bizarre world of David Sedaris. He tells how his sister Lisa brought her friend Dinah home one day four days before Christmas. He describes the humorous way in which his family reacts to her, and the questions they ask her about her interesting life in prison and about her experiences as a prostitute.
Another essay, "Christmas Means Giving," tells the fictional story about one family's competition with their neighbors, the Cottinghams. Every year, the neighbors try to out-do the other's Christmas deeds, and as you will see it gets pretty crazy as the families try to be the best and most "giving" in the neighborhood.
Holidays on Ice is a hilarious book of essays that will keep you laughing non-stop. I recommend this novel for anyone who wants a good laugh, young or old. I personally give this book two very enthusiastic thumbs up for its dry humor. Each sarcastic and humorous essay will make you want to read the next. By the way, this collection of essays would make a great Christmas gift!

2 out of 5 stars More odd and disconcerting than his usual works.........2007-07-03

I'm a huge fan of David Sedaris' books, but other than the "Santaland Diaries" and "Dinah" stories, I couldn't get into it. The other stories weren't funny, the pace was plodding despite the fact that these were short stories, and I was actually somewhat uncomfortable reading them.

I'd recommend most of his other books, just not this one.

3 out of 5 stars Revisitations of familiar journeys.......2007-05-07

I enjoyed the opportunity to read David Sedaris' stories, some of which I had read elsewhere. It is a good format to launch someone on 'the good ship Sedaris' but for those who have been initiated, it was all too brief in the newness arena. It rattles along very comfortably, like an old Chevrolet, but we do like the smell of a new car every so often, don't we?

5 out of 5 stars Holidays on Ice.......2007-03-24

Another collections of hilarious short stories by David Sedaris. All of them were hysterical. I loaned this book to many a friend and have yet to find an intelligent person who does not get this author! He is so well crafted at the art of writing, I laughed so hard I cried reading it!

A cup, a compass, a key: the magic tree house has brought siblings Annie and Jack to Camelot, where they embark on a mysterious mission to find these enigmatic gifts. In this special hardcover addition to the bestselling Magic Tree House series, the young adventurers must travel to the Otherworld, an "ancient, enchanted land beyond the edge of the Earth, the place where all magic began" to save Camelot from dark wizard Mordred's evil spell. If they fail, Camelot will be forgotten forever. Fans of the beloved, highly readable series by Mary Pope Osborne will rise to the challenge of this longer, more complex companion to her other titles, which include Earthquake in the Early Morning and Twister on Tuesday. As in every story in the sequence, Jack and Annie bravely plunge into their quest, learning about a culture and time very far removed from their own, and prove once again that children can make a difference. (Ages 6 to 9) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

The Magic Tree House series has become a staple for inspiring kids to read. Christmas in Camelot is a very special Magic Tree House book. Here, author Mary Pope Osborne uses the literary skills for which she’s known to create a longer, more in-depth story featuring the characters kids have come to love. The result is magical: a fast-paced but detailed, easy-to-read story. Jack and Annie go on a quest to save Camelot, a quest that will prove to a beleaguered King Arthur that children and imagination really can make a difference.

Book arrived in a timely manner. Was suprised it didn't have a dust cover as that was not stated in advertisement. However, book was in good shape.

5 out of 5 stars Magic Treehouse Series.......2007-09-26

The magic treehouse series has been and continues to be a wonderful series for my son. Educational and interesting, these books capture his attention and inspire his imagination. It is so rewarding to see your child be enthusiastic about reading stories and reading in general. I have and will continue to suggest these books to other parents.

1 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2006-11-07

What happened? Magic Tree House series books 1-28 were great, with educational tales filled with historical relevance that used just enough magic to make the story work. Buy the complete set of 1-28! However, the Christmas book (#29) and apparently all the following books are pure magic, fantasy drivel with no redeeming qualities. Did Mary Pope Osborne hope to capitalize on the Harry Potter craze? (I'm basing this on heresay, since I haven't read Harry Potter.) I slogged thru this book, cringed and gagged thru #30, and made my wife read the next ones to my 5 year old. I'm going to tell him there aren't anymore, because they are too awful to buy and read.

I very, very disappointed in what happened to this series. Please, please Mary Pope - get back to writing good stories and not this nonsense.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas in Camelot (Magic Treehouse #29).......2006-11-04

My [...] year old son absolutely loved this series. I had to read it to him, though. When I would stop reading for bedtime he would be so excited to know what came next he would always beg for just one more chapter. We are now rereading the books (he just turned 7). As his reading skills improve, he is beginning to pick out words and phrases as I read to him

This book was on of the Merlin series and had a more magical component to it. There are Christmas references but it is definitely not a real "Christmas" story. It can be read any time of the year. The story is about a brother and sister Jack and Annie. They have a series of clues to get to quest which is given to them by the magician Merlin. You can read this book alone, but I would recommend reading some of the earlier ones in the series to get to know the characters.

5 out of 5 stars Winter of the Ice Wizard by Mary Pope Osborne kids review .......2006-04-21

I liked this book because it had a lot of action. They had wolves that chased them and they also had winter storms. In this book they find two friends that help them. I would recommend this book for all boys and girls.

Book Description

The New York Times–#1 bestselling author and psychic Sylvia Browne and her son explore the ways in which spirits, angels, and God celebrate Christmas in Heaven and how the celebrations compare to those on Earth. Questions such as Are there presents and the exchanging of gifts? Do heavenly spirits decorate? and How is Jesus honored? are discussed, as is the idea of giving gifts from the heart, like the spirits and angels in heaven do, instead of giving store-bought goods. Information is also provided on the role of religious ceremonies in heaven and how they differ from the ceremonies of the living.

Perfect for that "little something" gift you want to give to someone to inspire them, to send them your love at Christmas. Short and sweet, it's more like an extended Christmas card than anything else. Perfect for indigo and crystal children who absolutely love this stuff. But for many of us, it reminds us of the beauty and splendor of our "real" home, and not this nasty earth plane. Very nice. Would like to see more of these, perhaps for Valentine's Day? Easter?

5 out of 5 stars Great Holiday Book!.......2007-08-06

Junie B. does it again...she makes us laugh during one of the most memorable holidays in a young child's life!! We see a soft side of Junie B. which rarely shows itself, but allows us to get to know her that much more AND teaches us a life lesson! My daughter and I loved reading this together!

5 out of 5 stars Junie B - elf girl.......2007-07-14

Another story in the series by Park! Keeps you laughing - and will take you down memory lane as Junie B. gets ready for Christmas & will remind you of ALL those "fun" lyrics we made up to Christmas songs! She's still irrepressible & even though her language is "becoming more adult" there are still enough "Junie B.-isms" to keep you in stitches. If you're collecting the series, get going to the cash register!

5 out of 5 stars So funny you will laugh at loud!.......2007-03-18

Barbara Park the author of this book and the entire Junie B. series has a writing style like no other. Her way of getting kids wanting to read through the real true to life stories of the kindergartener and first grader Junie B. Jones is fantastic. Barbara Park and her Junie B. books are consistently on the both the New York Times and the USA Today bestseller lists.

As of this date their are 26 books in the Junie B. series with the newest being Junie B. Dumb Bunny and this being the second newest. We have this book in the hard cover edition that has a paper cover sleeve and attached red satin ribbon bookmark for easily holding your current page. Santa left this in my then six year old's stocking the Christmas before last. It had just come out that previous month of 2005.

Junie B. Jones were the first chapter books that my daughter started reading. She was captivated by them as most kids this age are. They don't tell of a sticky sweet child but rather of the true to life hardships from the kid's view that a determined, opinionated, and sometimes frantic girl. She has some of the funniest moments in this book that my daughter and I burst out laughing at. Junie B. Likes to do things her own way and expects the world to pretty much revolve around her. Of course it doesn't and the trouble starts. In the end Junie B. learns a little bit anyway how to handle things.

In this book it Christmas time as the title suggests. The first grade classroom is getting ready for the holiday and the celebrations to come. They are learning and singing holiday songs and wearing elf costumes all of which are extremely exiciting to Junie B. As we have learned through previous books a classmate May is not exactly one of Junie B.'s favorite people. This time May has become a tattletale that is ruining the fun for Junie B. The part that stops Junie B. in her tracts and just may destroy this whole holiday season is that she draws May's name in the Secret Santa exchange that classroom number one is having. Junie B. comes up with a plan to get back May through the gift she plans on giving her. As usual things don't turn out as Junie B. has planned.

The books has 118 pages with 11 chapters. Their are usually about two illustrations per chapter. These are done in black and white print. The illustrator, Denise Brunkus perfectly captures the emotions of the fun and frustration of Junie B. But it's the cleverly written words that draw you in and make you feel like you can feel not only Junie B.'s joy but also her pain. She's is not quite the kid that you want your child to emulate but just the same a kid can learn from Junie B.'s problems that they are likely to encounter at some point in there grade school career.

Must have!

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious and adorable!.......2007-01-10

My daughter is so in love with Junie B! When she opened this up and started reading, it was wonderful to hear the laughter it brought!!! If you want many laughs brought on by a child's perspective, get this book...too cute!!

5 out of 5 stars The Frugal Gourmet Celebrates Christmas.......2002-08-04

This is the first recipe book I ever sat down and read from cover to cover. It has become one of my Christmas traditions, and one I share with friends and family by giving it as a gift.

Jeff Smith shares a lot of his personal feelings about the significance of Christmas, and his writing is obviously based on historical research. In a charming progression, he takes us through the events of the first Christmas and designates a feast including a special dish for each of the characters involved, from the Christ child Himself, to the angels, to even the beasts.

This book takes you through the history and traditions of Christmas, with full meals illustrated. My favorites - The crown roast of pork, with sausage stuffing. Favorite side dishes include brussels sprouts with balsamic vinegar and baked onions. A great read, and a must-have for the holidays.

Welcome to the hilariously hypothetical world of Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond. Everything has an impact on everything else in this world, so if you take a mouse to the movies, don't be surprised if you find yourself being run ragged by the exuberant little fellow's increasingly grand appetites. When we first met him in Numeroff and Bond's tremendously popular If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, he had more energy than a 2-year-old on lollipops. Now, in the excitement of the Christmas season, he's unstoppable. Going from movie theater to Christmas tree lot to the neighbor's yard for snowmouse-building, he's a very demanding mouse indeed--in only the best way, of course.

The freshness of the If You Give a... series is diminished only slightly as the sequels pile up. The dazed and earnest look on the face of the mouse's long-suffering friend makes a marvelous foil for the mouse's high-spirited expressions. Adult readers will chuckle as they recognize the ephemeral passions of a child, while children will simply love the unfolding chain of events. A perfect Christmas read-aloud for the impetuous youngster on your list. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

My two oldest grandchildren, Bodie, age 2 1/2, and Sadie, age 5, absolutely LOVE all of the Laura Numeroff "If You ..." books! The newest one has been read over and over again, one after another! Whenever I ask Bodie if he wants me to read him a book, he goes to the bookcase and comes back with a huge armful of books and they are ALL Laura Numeroff's books! WOW, POWERFUL!!!
The emotions that these pictures capture are amazing. My spirit just wept as I read this book. It brings to life the story of CHRIST in a way a child can comprehend, yet an adult will read over and over.
It is amazing how the simple text can pile such truth about the story of CHRIST. It is alive and real.
These pictures are a gift... one that takes you to the time HE was crucified.
I highly recommend this book for parents, teachers to read to their class or children.

Only after you have read it will you understand the gift that this book is to the truth of our salvation.

5 out of 5 stars Had this book for about 20 years........1999-12-26

I love it. What I find most illuminating is that it reflects Jesus in the faces of the people around Him. He still has that effect today.

I'm thinking about buying a copy for our church library.

5 out of 5 stars Book on Jesus Illustrated by Holland's Greatest Artist.......1999-04-03

This is the story of Jesus' life captured in exquisite pictorial vignettes of events from His birth to His death and resurrection. The brief text which capture the essence of each story are tied to Bible reference in the back of the book. The characters shown are defintiely from the Middle East and not sentimentalized Hollywood faces. The reader is plunged into the time of Jesus with emotional and visual impact which provoke thoughtful meditation. An outstanding book of its genre.

Because Joshua the Lamb was different, he often felt left out-like on the wintry night when he was left behind in a Bethlehem stable. This touching tale helps kids see that even if they're different, God has a unique plan for their lives.

This is a nice book. Very pretty and easy to read for a young child. Great story.

5 out of 5 stars God's perfect design finally told.......2007-05-12

Being the mother of a physically challenged son, I absolutely love this story. Although it brings tears to my eyes everytime I read it, the story never fails to fill my heart with hope and renewal. There is a God who sees the Big Picture and who knows how all the "Joshua's" in the world are needed to help carry out His perfect plan. It is a reamarkable story that teaches us all not to pray for perfection, but for purpose.

4 out of 5 stars The Crippled Lamb by Max Lucado.......2007-04-19

Max Lucado, along with, Jenna, Andrea, & Sara Lucado, create a story many children can relate to. In The Crippled Lamb, Joshua - a lamb - is different than the other sheep. He has no parents, and he is crippled. His only friend is an old cow named Abigail. She often reminds him that God has a special place for those like him. When the shepherds come gather the sheep to walk to the next valley, Joshua must stay behind. The others laugh and say mean things to him. Josh and Abigail are both in for a surprise later that night, when they are awakened by a woman and a child lying in the stables with them. Josh lies next to the baby (Jesus) to keep him warm. He soon learns that even though he may not fit in with the rest of the sheep, God did have a special place for him. Illustrated by Liz Bonham.

What I Liked: Most everything. This is a sweet book. It almost made my ten year old daughter cry. She thought it was sad how the others treated Josh. (Much like the way kids treat one another)

What I Disliked: Near the end of the story, the author implies that animals can pray to God. Again, I am there to teach my children differently. It's an easy fix when reading with your children. (It is so important that you know what your children are reading).

    Overall Review: Very Good.

    Age Appeal: 4-8

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story for children of all ages.......2007-01-29

I had heard this story read at a church function and so enjoyed it that I wanted to purchase a copy for each of my childrens families. It is such a heart warming story that no matter what you may feel is wrong with you, the Lord loves us all equally.

5 out of 5 stars What I think of The Crippled Lamb (Board Book edition).......2007-01-10

Hi, I'm StoryMaker. The Lucados' The Crippled Lamb stars a young lamb with spots named Joshua. Joshua was born different from the other sheep. One of his legs just didn't work right, and he had to limp everywhere instead of running and jumping like his fellow sheep. His best friend - an old cow named Abagail - said that God has a special place for those who feel left out. It's hard for Josh to beleive sometimes, even though he always wants to. One day, the other sheep are going to a greener, grassier land, but Joshua can't. However, Josh soon discovers why he has a bad leg. I have no idea why it says Ages 1-5 on the Proof of Purchase. This story is charming and sweet for all ages young and old. The paintings aren't exactly perfect, but they are still splendid in their way. I especially like the final illustration and sentence. It is just a good book. I reccomend it. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"
