Customer Reviews:
Certainly better than the first.......2007-04-05
The second of this novel series is adapted much better than the first. There's the occasional mistake, but they're rarer than in the first novel. However, you can tell that a man has adapted it as opposed to a woman, because descriptions of the mobile suit weapons are much more detailed, sometimes even confusingly so. But the best part here is that the writing, while not having that WOW sentence every now and then, is collectively much better. They could've gone without artwork, though, because Tomofumi Ogasawara's drawings aren't that great. Other than that, a BIG improvement on the first book.
Worth a Look.......2006-04-25
Don't be confused by the inclusion of "graphic novels" in the item description; this second book of a five-volume series from Tokyopop is a novelization with very few illustrations. However, I would definitely recommend this novelization of the Gundam Seed series over the manga published by Del Rey. Unlike the manga, the novelization allows a bit more insight into the events of the series and the thoughts and motivations of the characters. The lack of visuals is no loss, especially not considering the poor quality of the artwork in the manga series.
The quality of the writing - or rather, of the translation - is what prevents me from giving the novelization five stars. Unfortunately, it's clear that the translator is not also a writer, and so the choices of word and phrasing seem somewhat amateurish.
However, that's really my only complaint. If you enjoyed the Gundam Seed series enough that you'd like to revisit it in more depth, the novelization is definitely worth checking out. If nothing else, it will provide some extra insights on the characters that I personally find very entertaining.
Book Description
Cosmic Era 70: The genetically enhanced Coordinators (ZAFT) and the biologically unaltered Naturals (Earth Alliance Force) are at war. A shy young student named Kira Yamato is thrown in the midst of battle when ZAFT steals five new Earth Force secret weapons. Desiring only to protect his Natural friends, Kira embraces his Coordinator abilities and pilots the mobile suit Strike. In this novelization of the sophisticated television series, the hopes and fears of a new generation clash with the greatest weapons developed by mankind: Gundam.
Customer Reviews:
Sadly mistake-ridden.......2007-04-05
I would definitely give this novel a rave review--I'm a sucker for anything featuring the Gundam SEED story--if it weren't for all the mistakes. The novel isn't adapted very well, although sometimes you stumble upon a sentence that does a great job of describing something or someone, like "There was a cold sort of fear, a shudder up the spine like a hot blade, whenever they fought each other." The biggest problem, though, are the rampant misspellings and other assorted mistakes. If you want to read this, you'll have to suffer a lot.

Gundam Revew.......2006-03-21
In the begining it's hard to unerstand who the characters are becouse there are so flippin' many. But eventually you get it then you can finaly enjoy the book...
A changed review!.......2005-07-30
Man, am I glad I had the chance to delete all that stuff I wrote before.
Anyway, now that I can write a new review, all I basically have to say is this:
Confusing at times, not so good on artwork, but I love Gundam SEED so I give it 5 stars. But if you like the show, I recommend this. Just be patient with it; it'll get better.
(Oh, and thanks for the comment. I hate Neo!)
Some Surprising Differences from the Anime, But Still Good.......2004-09-24
Most people who would be inclined to read the Gundam Seed manga have probably already watched at least some of the anime series that it's based on. If not, I highly advise that you DO watch some of the anime first, otherwise you might get a little confused. Events move quite a bit faster and with less explanation in the manga, kind of like a compressed version of the anime - almost more like a summary of the events of the anime in some areas.
That's not to say that the storytelling is bad, because it isn't. I really enjoyed reading the first volume of the manga, but I think the way the story is told, it doesn't stand up real well on its own. It looks much better if you view it as a complement to the anime rather than a standalone work.
There are some differences in the manga that I was a bit surprised by. The look of the characters is quite different from in the anime. They are drawn in a more stylized way, and some of the characters actually look significantly different from their anime counterparts, though they're all still recognizable. There's nothing at all wrong with the art, though; in fact, in some cases, I liked the way the characters were drawn in the manga better than the anime.
Another difference that surprised me slightly is some of the plot changes that were made to the manga version - the Artemis segment was cut out completely, for instance, Miguel was killed much earlier than in the anime, and numerous minor scenes were either cut out or switched around. But of course, some revision is necessary to make an anime story work well as a manga, so changes are to be expected, and none of them are terrible. Some of them did seem a bit awkward, though.
But with all that said, the important thing is that it's still the same Gundam Seed story and characters, and it's still being done very well. The artwork seems a little spare in some parts, but it's still drawn very well. The highly stylized character art might not be to everyone's taste, but I certainly warmed up to it nicely once I got used to it. And most importantly, it's an exciting, interesting story that keeps you turning the pages and wanting more. And there are enough changes from the anime that even if you've seen it, you can't always predict exactly what's going to happen next (though all the real important events are still kept intact).
Also worth mentioning are the extras at the end, including an explanation of the Gundam franchise and a surprisingly meaty amount of information on all the characters, including design notes from the artist. Seems that the publisher went to a fair bit of trouble to spruce the volume up, and the effort shows.
Although it's not perfect, and I thought some of the story changes were a bit awkward and the pace seemed rather rushed at times, it's still a very enjoyable read with more than enough good points to counteract the bad. Certainly a winner in my book, and I would think most fans of the anime and manga fans in general would probably enjoy it.
ENEMY OR FRIENDLY FIRE, I GIVE UP.......2004-09-09
I tried to read this manga before I saw the anime and promptly put it down again. It was set up too much like an anime to work as a manga. After I watched the first volume of the anime and enjoyed it, I decided to give the manga another try. I was not impressed even then.
In the future, mankind has split into two distinct factions. In order to colonize space, humans genetically modified some of its members, making them smarter and stronger than normal humans. Along the way, the genetically enhanced became known as "Coordinators" and spent most of its time constructing space station colonies. Those left on Earth and others who didn't mess with their DNA became known as "Naturals". Over time, the Naturals became envious and suspicious of the Coordinators and in the event called the Bloody Valentine war broke out between the two forces of the Naturals' Earth Alliance and the Coodinators' forces, called ZAFT. While Earth has more resources and manpower, the war has continued for eleven months due to the enhanced abilities and superior technology of the Coordinators.
The Earth Alliance wants to bring about a change in this stalemate by manufacturing Mobile Gundam Suits which are superior even to the Coordinators technology. ZAFT has found out about their existence and is determined to either capture the suits or destroy them. So they send a strike team to the satellite colony of Heliopolis. The problem is that the colony is officially neutral and has no knowledge of the suits being made. So they are in for a rude awakening as to the realities of war.
Kira Yamato is a young industrial college student who wants no part of the war but finds himself the only person able to pilot the new mobile suit for the Earth Alliance. He isn't fighting on any side but simply to protect his friends and the people of Heliopolis, his home. Unfortunately, his best friend, Arthrun, is fighting for ZAFT and they just might have to meet again in battle.
While I enjoyed the anime, I did not enjoy this manga. Without color, it is hard to tell which Gundam is which because they all look basically the same. The humans themselves are pretty indistiguishable too and it makes for a lot of confusion. How can there be suspense or excitement during a battle when you can't even tell who is who? Also, the manga jumps around a lot from setting to setting between panels so you feel disoriented. While this may work in anime, it doesn't work in manga where flow is more important than cuts. If I had not seen the anime first I would not have been able to tell the boys from the girls in the manga. I would recommend not even picking up this manga. Check out the anime!
IT IS AWESOME!!.......2004-06-20
This manga is awsome, the storyline is great, the pics are great, and it's Gundam!!!

Now the entire Earth is in jeopardy, and only Kira and Athrun can save it. . . . but time is running out! This is the final volume of Gundam SEED.
Customer Reviews:
The story and translation both kill it.......2007-04-05
If you read this manga and focus on the artwork, it's a masterpiece. The art is the best it's been through the whole series. But if you focus on the story and the translation, it's a mess. Characters' names are reversed ("Nara Athha Uzumi" instead of "Uzuma Nara Athha"), a sound effect isn't translated, and periods are erased all over the place. Del Rey should have gotten better as it went along, and instead it got worse. The story is as bad as it's been--condensed and confusing. This volume's especially bad for storyline--it's as if someone called up the artist and said "GET IT DONE FAST!"
So, I wish I could give this five stars like I did for the others, but I just can't! The story and translation are horrific enough to take a star away from my rating, I'm afraid.
Watch the anime instead........2006-02-22
Since I missed the Gundam Seed anime so much since it was cancelled on Cartoon Network and I can't really afford DVDs with my allowance, I bought the manga.
The manga interprets the storyline very well as far as I'm concerned, but the illustration and art quality is horrid. The drawings of the human characters are more exagerrated than they were in the anime, the coloring/details were incorrect on a few characters (Mu La Flaga has blond hair, not brown; Capt. Ramius was shown with/without lipstick in many scenes;Tolle has brown hair, not blond; Dearka has dark skin not pale), making very confusing to distinguish who was who. The camera angles were very mundane and overused, I couldn't really "tune in" because every panel looked the same. In the colored pictures (like in Volume 1: the shading on the first three 'colored' pictures didn't even capture the features on Kira and Athrun's faces), the shadows seemed to be scattered in random places throughout the characters' faces. Overall, I was not impressed with this poor adaptation of a compelling anime series. Don't buy it, even if you're curious and never watched the anime, DON'T BUY IT.
Book Description
WHEN THE PAST CATCHES UP
The battle carrier Archangel finally made it to Earth, but its descent took the crew directly into the African desert, controlled by the enemy, the Zaft Empire. Now, if the crew have any hope of reaching the Federation military base in Alaska, they have to make a desperate dash across the Indian Ocean. Battered by constant attacks, the crew must rely on the goodwill of the neutral island nation of Orb. But Orb’s leader asks a high price for his help–the battle data of the Archangel and its mobile suit. No one knows better than Cagalli, the leader’s daughter, that he’d have no problem selling this crucial data for political gain. Meanwhile, the last thing that young pilot Kira Yamato wants is to battle his former best friend, Athrun, but a battlefield tragedy may lead to a blood feud between them!
Customer Reviews:
Getting better all the time.......2007-04-05
Once again, just as the second had better art than the first, the third has better art than the second! Iwase-sensei is getting more comfortable with the characters.
Story? Nope. Great ending, of course (brought tears to my eyes) but the story is still sort of condensed. Compare it to the novel and the anime and this storyline is the worst out of the three. Just disregard the few mistakes in translation, and you've got a pretty good manga!
Very good!.......2005-02-27
This was the first GundamSEED manga I read, but I had seen a few anime episodes before. It was understandable to me, even without reading the first two. Now, that I have read the first and seconds volumes I must say that this is my faveourite. It is very interesting and has nice battle scenes, though I thought the battle in the first and second were a bit better. Nevertheless the plot is interesting and the ending is full of suspense. I can't wait until volume 4 comes out, it will leave you itching to find out what happens. I would recommended this to those who have read or watched GundamSEED before or have a bit of background knowledge. It's still an allright place to start off though! I find that if you have seen the anime first, it is a bit different. The anime is more light-hearted in my opinon. I rate this book really 4.5 stars out of 5 but, a) there is no such option and b) the drawings and ending are so great, I think they earned it!
Book Description
The Archangel, a cutting-edge battle carrier, has managed to maneuver through dangerous war zones with the help of the young, enhanced Coordinator Kira Yamato and his advanced robot, the Strike Gundam. But the constant battles take their toll on the young pilot–when Kira isn’t fighting in reality, he battles in his nightmares. While scavenging for vital supplies amid a vast graveyard of space colonies, the crew turns up Lacus Clyne, the beautiful daughter of a high official of the Zaft Empire. But is this lovely hostage a blessing or a curse? When a descent to the Earth-controlled district of Alaska goes tragically wrong, the Archangel winds up in the African desert attacked by new Zaft mobile armors, one piloted by Kira’s best friend and most dangerous enemy, Athrun!
Customer Reviews:
Better art than the first.......2007-04-05
The art has definitely improved from the first (the art in the first seemed as if the artist was trying to get comfortable with drawing the characters). Iwase-sensei, through the series, does a great job making the characters subtly age, and that aging can be seen here. However, the story hasn't really improved. It seems that it's condensed from the original, and that makes it hard to understand. All in all it's a pretty good volume of manga. I don't recommend it for those who're perfectionists about their manga.
A Wild Ride.......2005-04-12
Masatsugu Iwase-sensei is back! And none too soon. The Archangel, a state-of-the-art battle carrier, has managed to wend its way through perilous war zones thanks to young stud pilot Kira Yamato and his sidekick robot, the Strike Gundam. However, the never-ending battles take their toll on the young pilot Kira-who also suffers from horrific nightmares. While scavenging for desperately needed supplies deep in a graveyard of space colonies, the crew stumbles upon Lacus Clyne, the knock-out daughter of a high official of the Zaft Empire. Is this a good omen? Or not? When a return trip to the Earth-controlled district of Alaska goes terribly wrong, the Archangel winds up in an African desert attacked by new Zaft craft, one of which is piloted by Kira's best friend and most dangerous enemy, Athrun! Fasten your seat belts; you are in for a ride.
