Book Description

After a century in which the lexicon of artists' materials expanded from the classic oil, canvas, stone and plaster to include photography, film, performance, found objects and concepts, the spotlight has finally swung back. A new generation of artists--as well as some who never abandoned figurative painting in the first place--is relishing the solitary, slow, subtle set of processes involved in not just painting, but painting people. They are choosing paint's unique ability to distill a lifetime of events rather than photography's glimpse of a frozen moment. Painting People, edited by the prominent London art historian and critic Charlotte Mullins, unites and contrasts the work of a key group of artists from around the world, and investigates their richly varied accomplishments in lucid text with detailed commentaries, accompanied by more than 150 reproductions. The list of contributing artists is stellar, ranging from photo-based painters like Luc Tuymans, Peter Doig and Marlene Dumas to Pop artists like Sigmar Polke and Alex Katz, photorealists like Chuck Close and Gerhard Richter, Neoexpressionists like Cecily Brown, and comics-inspired painters like Yoshitomo Nara, Inka Essenhigh and Takashi Murakami. There are erotic grotesques from John Currin and Lisa Yuskavage, meditations on the muse by Elizabeth Peyton and Lucian Freud, "Repro-realistic" work from Neo Rauch and of course self-portraits by Philip Akkerman and Marcel Dzama, among others.

Where is David Humphrey? Clearly should have been included. A nice sequel could include more artists that deal with Figurative abstraction such as Humphrey, Amy Sillman and many others.

Also, not enough text, and could have had more images

This book is paired with an Odd Nerdrum book, in one of those "Better Together" promos that Amazon does. I'm not sure who decided these two books belong together. Some Amazon executive looked at the Nerdrum book, and said "here's a serious traditional realist. Let's pair his book up with a collection of cartoons."

And cartoons they are. I expected a collection of figurative works to include at least some serious works. Freud is in the collection, but beyond that, there's a load of stuff you'd see in a SoHo gallery where hype out-ranks skills. I have gone through the book three times, and have not seen a single artist I'd want to know more about.

Yes, I get modern art. I know what they're trying to do, blah blah blah, but the book was misrepresented by pairing it with a book by a realist, and further misrepresented by placing a semi-realist painting on the cover. That painting, by the way, isn't even in the book, nor does the dust jacket credit the artist. It's not representative of the book at large (I know. I know. I judged the book by the cover).

A book of figure painting would rightly include Steven Assael, Jeremy Lipking, Robert Liberace and other young greats. What it did include were over-hyped artists who can rightly be called modern artists, but not figurative painters.

I couldn't think of a single reason to keep this book, and for the first time in nearly ten years as an Amazon customer, I asked for a refund. Amazon has a very easy refund procedure, and if you've bought this book, I recommend you use it.

For those who are looking for a serious collection of figurative work, try "Strokes of Genius". I haven't seen it, but I've heard very good things about it.

Strokes of Genius: The Best of Drawing

4 out of 5 stars Good start could be better.......2007-06-11

In one sense I really like this book. It has oodles of high quality images of very contemporary artists work, and lets be honest, it's hard to find good images of contemporary artists work a lot of the time. I also liked the text that prefaced each section of the book, it was well written and interesting. However, many of the artists featurerd I felt were a little sub par- that is to say, I've seen better contemporary figure painters. Some are great; Freud, Saville, Yuskagvich, Currins, but many were just not up to the level of some of the great painters featured. Plus, the text about each individual artist was very brief. Over all, i'm glad I have it, but I feel it could be a better overview of figurative painting today.

4 out of 5 stars Figure painting is back.......2007-06-03

This book is a good survey of contemporary figure painting. After an introduction explaining the author's aim, namely to present those artists who paint the human figure with the idea of engaging wider themes than the mere painting of a portrait (such as implicit criticism of the violence of our society in Furnas's paintings, or the intimacy of the human being in Peyton's portraits), the author divides her book into five chapters in order to study what these wider themes are:

The figure unravelled
The urban condition
Other worlds
Folk tales
The past deconstructed.

Lavish illustrations of works by Lucian Freud, Chuck Close, Elizabeth Peyton, John Currin, Barnaby Furnas, Lisa Yuskavage, Dana Schutz, Marcel Dzama, to name but a few, are accompanied by a short text describing either the technique or the objective, or both, of each of the artists mentioned.

More an introduction than an in-depth study, this book makes for good reading and gives a fair overview of the state of contemporary figure painting, whatever your opinion is on the selected artists, of whom one may wonder if they will all stand the test of time...

1 out of 5 stars Very, Very Dissapointed.......2007-05-30

I was very disappointed with this book. The cover painting by Currin led me to buy it, hoping to see more of this type of interesting portrait work. Unfortunately, the book is filled with Modernistic art portraits, if you can call them that, and seems to focus on grotesque, distorted, weird, and overall just plain ugly paintings. Sure, the paintings are of people, but that's about as far as I could consider this art to be portraits. Sorry, I used the word "art" to refer to these paintings. My mistake. Anyway, if you like Modern Art, and are looking for some truly offensive paintings, this may be your cup of tea. The cover portrait by Currin isn't even shown in the book, although two other interesting paintings by Currin are.

Book Description

Freud at Work is a rare glimpse into the life of one of the most celebrated—and most private—artists working today. Though in his eighties, this great figurative artist continues to paint with undiminished energy and discipline.

In 120 revealing black-and-white and color photographs taken in Lucian Freud’s London studio, and in a fascinating in-depth interview, we come to understand the stages of the artist’s work and the intensity of his interaction with his subjects—whether fellow artist David Hockney, the Queen of England, or performance artist Leigh Bowery, among others.

Two remarkable photographers have been recording Freud at work over the past twenty years . The artist, uncharacteristically, allowed Bruce Bernard, the acclaimed picture editor, to photograph him in the studio, especially during the years he was working with Bowery as his model. Following Bernard’s death in 2000, David Dawson, the painter’s assistant, began photographing the daily life of the studio, showing us the progress of Freud’s paintings, his models—some naked, some famous—and the painter himself caught in moments of intense concentration.

Though Freud has always been reluctant to give interviews, talk about the painters he admires, or discuss how he works, his conversation here with the Australian writer Sebastian Smee is frank and revealing.

Unlike any other book we have seen about Freud—comparable to David Douglas Duncan’s books of photographs of Picasso—this important document invites us for the first time into the secret domain of the artist.

magnificent view on the painter as painter.

5 out of 5 stars A Window into the Privacy of the Creative Mind of Lucian Freud.......2007-04-27

Lucian Freud seems to gain in importance as a painter and as provocateur with every exhibition (or even frequent monograph) that appears - an d for good reason. Freud continues the tradition of figure painting, but clearly in his own language. His canvases are dense with detail of both body surface and psychic message. His tendency to find rather physically grotesque models (such as Leigh Bowery) and then paint canvas after canvas of those models, each work revealing even more bizarre statements about the sitter, has made him one of the most interesting painters of our day - and the gentleman is in his eighties!

Infamously reclusive, Freud paints everyday, producing huge canvases and diptychs/triptychs with what appears to be the greatest of ease. But this very fine book allows us to see the artist's struggle with the creative muse by admitting us into the studio, courtesy of interviewers David Dawson and Sebastian Smee and photographers Dawson and Bruce Bernard, a friend and admirer now gone who captured some of the more sophisticated views of the artist at easel and photographic images of the models along side the painted version from Freud's hands, imagination and talent.

Even for those who have collected museum catalogs and other monographs of the work of Lucian Freud these richly reproduced color photographs of Freud's paintings, given the new vantage of moving from the museum wall into the studio of origination with the additional images of the painter at work, constitute a superior art monograph of a current genius. The book is a conversation with a living genius, a painter who is far more interested in the paint and brush than he is with the observer - until now. Highly recommended for art collectors, educators, art students, and for those who remain fascinated with the human figure. Grady Harp, April 07

5 out of 5 stars If you like Freud's work, you'll love this.......2007-01-27

If the so-called School of London is your thing, here is a unique opportunity to watch the grand master at work. Not as good as a video, as possible with Auerbach and Bacon, but you take what you can get with the famously reclusive Freud, who clearly relishes enhancing his own reputation for eccentricity. (Remember the Snowdon photo of a wild-eyed Freud in his youth standing in front of his vintage Rolls Royce while wearing work clothes, like a scene right out of the 'sixties film Blow Up?)

Here we see the work of two photographers, both old friends, who were allowed to capture Freud at work over more than 20 years, as he painted single- and multiple-subject portraits of widely varying sizes, with subjects ranging from The Queen to Leigh Bowery. Most interestingly, this format allows us to see a large number of his paintings at various stages of completion, thus showing his process in a reasonable amount of detail.

Start with a sketch by Cezanne and adapt it to two models, then add a third, to make a contemporary painting. An earlier work starts with a nude model perched somewhat precariously in the cubbyhole high up on the wall. Her portrait on the easel below reveals just how brutal Freud can be in portraying the figure. When we saw the painting at Acquavella Gallery, we wondered if he actually had the model positioned in a nook in the wall. Now we know.

We see how the oil portraits of subjects such as Lord Fellowes and David Hockney start with oil sketches and go through development to the finished painting. The talented young British artist Tai-Shan Schierenberg, whose portraits of John Mortimer and Lords Sainsbury and Carrington are already in the Tate and the National Portrait Gallery, is one of several artists who paint in a style very similar to Freud's, but close-ups of Freud's smaller portraits show the particuarly intensive reworking which make his work unique. He lays on paint heavily like Auerbach or Kossoff but with his own style, which, in the end, is inimitable.

Brigadier Andrew Parker Bowles in full dress uniform makes a glamorous subject. We also see Freud painting a horse and his dog Pluto, and his latest young female admirer. We also see Freud developing the plates for his masterful etchings, some of the best work being done in that medium today.

A 30-page interview by David Dawson and Sebastian Smee is interspersed with the late Bruce Bernard's color photographs and David Dawson provides over 100 additional color photographs of the painter at work. It seems that there is a new monograph on Freud every eighteen months or so; this is one of the few works which focuses on his process.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential.......2006-12-07

If you are an admirer of Lucian Freud's work, this book should definitely have place in your library. It essentially comprises of 3 parts, opening with a very frank and insightful interview with Freud by Sebastian Smee. Followed by two collections of colour and b&w photographs by Bruce Bernard and David Dawson. They cover all aspects of Freud in the studio - photos of Freud larking around as a Henry Moore sculpture, works in progress (often including the model), finished paintings, his studio, his dogs, horses, foxcub, etching plates and resulting prints, series of WIP paintings showing the stages involved in their creation. Over 120 photos in all, with the vast majority being in colour. Lavishly illustrated.

Smee, Bernard, and Dawson all had/have a close association with Freud and for me that's what makes this book so special. Throughout, Freud is just going about his business which is captured wonderfully by the photos. Bernard wanted to take carefully considered photos but Freud was having none of that, to the point of literally doing headstands. Bernard died in 2000, around the time that Freud was working on his Cezanne piece. Dawson picks up the plot from there, with photo's through to 2006.

For anyone interested in Freud's painting process, either out of curiosity or as an artist, the photo's provide a wealth of information. The adage "A picture is worth a 1000 words" could not be more apt. The Work in Progress photos range from the raw drawing on canvas through to finished pieces. A number of WIP photos also include the model, allowing for comparison between the flesh and the oil. Etching plates and the resulting prints are also shown.

Smee's interview reads like a couple of guys chatting over a pint down the pub. Over his career (and long may it continue!) Freud has met and hung out with numerous famous figures - Picasso, Giacometti, Bacon, Hirst, Auerbach, Bergmann, Balthus, Bowery, Queen Elizabeth II, even gambling with the notorious Kray Twins (1950/60 gangsters from London's east end). The interview is liberally populated with wonderful anecdotes. Freud also talks about the painters through history that he admires - Cezanne, Matisse, Corot, Chardin, Toulouse-Latrec and why. He touches upon living in London and anti-semitism, what led him to paint pictures of his mother, his grandfather Sigmund Freud, being sat at the bar and finding out that someone else was impersonating him - was he upset? Not really, he ended up painting the man's portrait.

For someone who is reknowned for his privacy this book is exceptional. I'm sure Freud had a huge say in how the book would look and its contents. His pride in a job well done is most evident.

If Freud is on your artistic radar, even as the merest blip, then do yourself a favour and own this book. Essential. 10 stars!

5 out of 5 stars B&B Cookbook.......2007-05-21

This is a great cookbook. I own many, many cookbooks and can always count on finding a wonderful recipe in this book. I actually bought it as a gift because I already own volumes I and II. It is also fun to read about the various B&B's around the country. One minor issue--when you find a recipe you love, you need to remember the name or mark it because the recipes are listed by name and are sometimes difficult to find. For instance, I made some cheese blintzes and couldn't find them the next time I wanted to make them because they are listed under "Eva's Cheese Blintzes". I didn't occur to me to look under "E". I find this somewhat illogical. However, I highly recommend this book! Every recipe I have tried has been marvelous!

This is the BEST cookbook ever. I have soooo many cookbooks and it seems like this is the only one I ever actually use. Unique recipes, most easy to prepare. My guess is that one of the reasons bed and breakfast inns are so popular is the food... now make it at home too. Buy this book it's great!

Book Description

A step-by-step guide to building PHP web sites and applications using the Smarty templating engine
- Bring the benefits of Smarty to your PHP programming
-Give your designers the power to modify content and layout without PHP programming
-Produce code that is easier to debug, maintain, and modify
-Useful for both Smarty developers and users

Smarty is a templating engine for PHP. Designers who are used to working with HTML files can work with Smarty templates, which are HTML files with simple tags while programmers work with the underlying PHP code. The Smarty engine brings the code and templates together. The result of all this is that designers can concentrate on designing, programmers can concentrate on programming, and they don't need to get in each others way so much. Even if you are developing a site on your own, Smarty is a powerful way to make your code clearer to you and others, as well as easier to debug and modify later.

This book is a comprehensive guide to all aspects of using Smarty. It will help you to:
-Install and configure Smarty on your Web server
- Understand how Smarty affects your web site architecture, and build site foundations that make the most of what Smarty offers
- Designers will learn to work with templates that contain variables and logic, to modify layouts or content of Smarty web sites
- See how Smarty caching can improve the performance of your sites
- Develop custom Smarty functions and plug-ins to incorporate into your templates

Using a step-by-step approach based on realistic examples, the expert authors show you how to use Smarty in your own PHP development. The book is ideal for PHP developers who are new to Smarty, and for web designers who are working with PHP developers who are using Smarty.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference but not everything.......2007-01-10

I found this book to be a good reference if you are not already familiar with Smarty. It gives you the basics but doesn't get too involved.
I would recommend having some PHP experience first before you buy it.
I bought it to be used as an additional programming help guide to work with X-Cart. It's been good for that.
Overall, it's worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars A book to quickly master Smarty.......2006-11-09

You are looking for a simple solution to separate your PHP code from the graphics of your website? You work in a team composed of coders and graphists? Then you have already thought about templating!

Without a doubt, Smarty currently is the best templating engine available on the market. It is not famous for its simplicity but for its completeness.

This book is on the same page as the others I had the chance to read from the same editor (Packt Publishing). It was written for a wide public (from beginners to advanced) and it covers most of the subject. Thanks to this book, you will have the ability to quickly master Smarty and to use it during all your projects without many problems.

The introduction does not only handle Smarty, but rather the templating philosophy. You will also find installation walkthroughs, structural and logical Smarty internal processes.
The main part of the book is divided into two parts. The first is directed towards designers with, for the most part, creation of Template files and usage of Smarty functions. A whole chapter is dedicated to application debugging.
The other section is aimed at programmers, with details and explanation on each variable or method used in Smarty. This section is really useful on the long term, since you can come back to it any time.

You now have all the knowledge to start templating on your own, and you won't forget the experience you gained through explanations, step by step, as well as sources illustrating these pages.

You can now go further using Smarty's power by reading the following chapters about caching, plugins usage, filters and internationalization of your website.

To sum up, this is a very good book for those who are interested in Smarty and very useful for those who are already using it. But watch out: Smarty is not to be used in every website. I would like to highlight, however, that its use is far too complex to be used in a static website: you will need some dynamic components to notice any improvement. Actually, Smarty needs you to learn a new language: what you know how to do in PHP most probably has a Smarty equivalent, so that you will need a transition time.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Smarty book.......2006-09-02

No need to hide it, "Smarty PHP Template Programming and Application" is an excellent book!

Whether you are graphic designer or developer, this book is for you, thanks to a clear separation of the needs.
Every step is exposed in details : installation, utility and the way to work with Smarty is clearly explained.
You can add to this a detailed explanation of the various built-in variables and methods, differents way for managing the cache, filters and plugins,... all this makes this book a very good one, covering from he most basic to the most advanced methods.

Moreover, there's a complete chapter on "website internationalization" with Smarty.

To summarize, and I guess you already understood, this is an excellent book that any developer/designer who works with Smarty must read.

4 out of 5 stars Great guide to PHP & Smarty.......2006-07-08

If you're looking for a good book on Smarty, this one should definitely be on your list. This book takes you through every feature that Smarty offers in an easy-to-understand and practical way, with plenty of clear and concise examples to make it even easier to understand.

It doesn't matter if you're a developer who wants to start using Smarty or if you're a designer who has to start working with Smarty, this book is a great resource for both and thanks to a clear division in the book it's easy to learn about Smarty as a developer or designer.

There aren't many negative things to say about this book, but it isn't perfect either. Sometimes things are explained multiple times, with might cause some slight annoyance, and in some cases parts of an example aren't explained at all, which leaves you wondering what something is used for.

To sum it all up, this book is certainly worth the money, and I can definitely recommend it if you're looking to get started with Smarty.

5 out of 5 stars Smarty.......2006-05-19

Smarty. The title is just as short and simple as the book itself. The first few chapters cover why you would want to use Smarty. This has always been the biggest slowdown of Smarty adoption: why use a template language? Isn't PHP already a template language? Isn't Smarty slow? What does the workflow look like? All of these questions are covered in these first few chapters. (The speed of Smarty is covered at the end in more detail, too.)

After that, the rest of the book covers the actual Smarty template language. There are two main sections that teach the reader: one section for template designers and one for programmers -- just like how the Smarty homepage is set up. Basically, each section covers the exact same material that's on the Smarty homepage, only in a more logical progression. Rather than a standard reference-manual format, these sections are laid out with several real-word projects and examples.

If you're new to Smarty, or have thought about learning it, I would definitely buy this book. However, if you're already familiar with the language, you really won't gain anything new here -- except printed documentation, which is always nice. Overall, Smarty is a great book for beginners.

Book Description

After giving us a background of network security, the book moves on to explain the basic technologies we will work with, namely netfilter, iproute2, NAT and l7-filter. These form the crux of building Linux firewalls and QOS. The later part of the book covers 5 real-world networks for which we design the security policies, build the firewall, setup the script, and verify our installation. These comprehensive set of set up scripts and set up guidelines to create firewall protection for various specific usage scenarios are unique and set this book apart.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2007-01-11

Although I am an experienced Linux user and do some Admin, I'm on my current project developing a linux embedded system that will be a router. We have QoS and netfilter requirements and I found nearly all the data on QoS old and dated for the 2.4 kernel. Furthermore, due to lack of info I had a hard time developing basic test scenarios.

After reading this book, I feel much better preparred for the project. What I liked about the book was the real world examples with some sense of humor. Even on a dry subject like network packets I was able to read thru the book easily. The tc examples and kernel config was what I really needed, and the book handled that well. The book is based on kernel 2.6.14 at least in a few areas.

I'm giving the book 4 stars because I'm just starting. The book does have large and small examples but I haven't used them yet. As an intro I give it 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Freud has an awareness of the physicality of the body and nature.......2007-08-20

I feel that "Lucian Freud" is the greatest British painter of the 1990's. He makes me confront nakedly the truth of our bodies, and perhaps that is where his greatness lies. He is a great painter of the flesh, which he seems to visualize with an objective intensity that reminds me of a scientist and his microscope, or even, perhaps, a pathologist and their scalpel.
This book of art is like a tribute to the capacity of the eye truly to look and of the hand truly to transcribe what is seen. All artists strive to achieve this, but few succeed.

Love it! Fantastic pictures...hey, Im all about the visuals! Beautiful book, will be treasured for a life time!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on Freud's paintings.......2007-01-10

This is definitely one of the best books on Freud's paintings. The reproductions are excellent. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars A Prolific, Impressive Figurative Painter Steps Back to Think.......2005-11-23

There are many books about the works of British artist Lucian Freud, one of the better of which is the one by William Feaver that accompanied an exhibition of his works, but this new release is important in more ways than one. Now in his 80s Freud has not changed his subject matter (face portraits, large scale nudes alone and with company, dogs, the occasional landscape) nor has he altered his technique which leans toward thick impasto and palette knife and scrubble manipulations.

What does seem to be changing as Freud continues to stare at his bulky and usually unattractive models is his emphasis on the mindset of the sitter. No longer are we seeing a long procession of similar faces but instead we are seeing eye engagement suggesting something about the history of the sitter. Freud is a serious painter, but one with a caustic wit. The face portrait of Queen Elizabeth is layers and layers of white pigment built as though preparing a clown's makeup and garnished with the requisite royal jewels, but the end product is not a regal queen but a rather frumpy, old tired relic of a monarch. Not flattering, but realistic in a way that only history will fully appreciate as an important statement within a portrait.

The accompanying text is informative and probing, but the emphasis here is on the paintings - and there are many in this generous book, both as full scale and captured details. If you are eager to see what Freud has done since his major touring exhibition, this is the definitive resource. Grady Harp, November 05

Book Description

Over six decades, Lucian Freud has built up a reputation as one of the most distinctive contemporary figurative artists. Freud's startling and disconcerting portraits and nudes have a haunting quality that makes them impossible to forget. This stunning book brings together key works from Freud's entire career, including over 140 paintings, drawings, and etchings, some new, and many never before exhibited.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Complete Freud.......2007-05-26

Probably the most complete available study on Lucian Freud to date, this book, which is the catalogue for a 2002 retrospective at the Tate Gallery, benefits from wonderful illustrations and a text which traces the artist's career from its beginnings in the early 1940's to 2001.Particularly interesting is the demonstration of how Freud's art is linked to some of the greatest ancient masters, like Velasquez, Chardin, Titian or Courbet. A short and impressive text by the painter Frank Auerbach gives an interesting view of Freud seen through the eyes of one of his most brilliant admirers, an artist himself.

4 out of 5 stars Freud the painter.......2006-01-31

Excellent book on Lucien Freud, with good illustrations & nicely presented. Freud is one of the leading painters of our times - his often harsh depictions of family & friends are not always easy to digest, but this book helps explain the artist & his times. Perhaps the element I missed was information on his teaching at the Slade (why do books on artists so seldom cover this aspect of their work, surely the influence & development of artists through teaching is an important part of their lives?).

3 out of 5 stars Great pictures, confusing text.......2005-03-08

While I spent hours enjoying the color plates in this book, I spent an equal amount of time frustrated with the text. The author is clearly familiar with Freud, knows him, and understands his world and his sources. One problem is that he assumes the reader has a similar kind of knowledge. He refers, for example, to Freud's early fascination with certain comic strips (some apparently dating from the mid-19th century)and how they affected Freud's development. These are illustrated with a very few marginal reproductions that do nothing to enlighten the reader about the nature of these influences. At another point, the author refers to one of Freud's early paintings (not reproduced in the book that I could find) which he argues was based on color plate III from a book on Egyptian art (which Freud owns), but the color plate is not reproduced either... so the reader is left to consider the influence of an unillustrated source on an unillustrated painting. Some of the paintings referred to in the text are reproduced in thumbnails in the margins of the book, which is extremely helpful when one is trying to follow the flow of the argument, but others are not. Plate references are given; unfortunately, the plates are not in numerical order (for example, illustration 63 may or may not be before 64, which might in turn be followed by 69 and then 65) which leaves you hunting around trying to match image with text. The author refers to many of the people who knew and interacted with Freud. Some of them are well known in their own right and require no identification. Many, though, were people I, at least, had never heard of --- a female English aristocrat who was evidently peeved that her daugher had not been invited to a coronation or wedding or some other royal function, a bewildering variety of people who (in a sentence or two) are described as marrying and divorcing before Freud married and/ or divorced (or maybe just bedded, it's never really made clear) the women in turn. People are identified as the sister or the in-law of another person previously unmentioned in the text, and so on. If you've ever been to a party with a group of people who have all known each other for a long time, with you a newcomer, you'll have some idea of the effect of this ... they're all talking about things that happened and people they knew years ago, and you have absolutely no idea what's going on. And, when all is said and done, the author actually writes relatively little about the paintings as paintings. He does provide some fascinating quotes from Freud which give you some grist for your intellectaul mill, but that's about it. Frankly, I gave up on the text and simply enjoyed the pictures, a good number of which I had not seen reproduced before.

5 out of 5 stars An In-Depth Survey of This Important Painter.......2003-02-10

LUCIEN FREUD is certainly one of the most talked about contemporary figurative artists around the world. Most people are familiar with his greater than life-sized portraits of corpulent male and female nudes and of his much talked about protraits of friends such as Francis Bacon and David Hockney. But few of us have been exposed to the gamut of this artist's output to the extent that this very fine book by William Feaver investigates the entire career of the grandson of Sigmund Freud.

The book is a catologue for the exhibition currently in Los Angeles, having opened in London and travelled to Barcelona. But to classify the scholarly and intensively detailed tome as an 'exhibition catalogue' simply does not do justice to the scope of this volume. The writing by Feaver is wise, witty, and thoroughly readable - the essay portion that opens the book is more a biography and an analysis of Freud's position in art history than a resume. The color reproductions are superb, spreading as they do across two pages for the very large paintings. As a catalogue the editors can be forgiven for not including sufficient 'detail views' that enhance understanding, but this is a minor point. The supporting data in the back of the book is as fine a catalogue raisonne as has been published to date.

Those of us fortunate enough to live in Los Angeles allowing multiple visits to this impressive exhibition can use Feaver's book as a Master Class on Lucien Freud. But the book stands alone in its mastery of the life and work of this exciting painter. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars At last ..........2002-10-26

The definitive book on one of the greatest figurative painters of our time. The format is large enough (double paged, at times), the repros rich enough, and the scope comprehensive enough to properly capture a life/work as important as Lucian's. A must have.

Look into the work of Phil Hale ("Goad" from grantbooks.com), Odd Nerdrum (nerdrum.com) and Jenny Saville (geocities.com/craigsjursen/index.html) if you enjoy this artist.

5 out of 5 stars It's my 'go to' cookbook of choice!.......2003-09-07

I can't you how many times I've gone to my copy of this cookbook for recipes... it's the one I reach for first! It's like taking a trip around the country without leaving my home! VERY user friendly format, too!

I love the small-sized recipes that many of the B&B's and Inns use... hubby and I are 'empty nesters' most of the year with our sons away at college so there's no need to make big meals or we'd be eating leftovers forever.

This review refers to "The American Country Inn and Bed & Breakfast Cookbook"(vol 1) by Kitty and Lucian Maynard....

St Chuck Poolside Jambalaya to North Carolina Applsauce Muffins, Aunt Ruth's Baked Eggs and Cheese to Dorothy's Chocolate Zucchini Cake, Guacamole to Lobster Pie to Salt Lake City Taffy, you'll find the biggest and best collection of regional homestyle cooking from all over this great food lovin country in this fabulous cookbook!

Whatever type of fare you have in mind you'll find something good in these pages. The Manyard's have done all the work. State to State(including Alaska and Hawaii) they have found us some great recipes from Country Inns and Bed and Breakfast's from all over the country. With more than 1700 homestyle recipes you really get your money's worth.

You can go state to state(without leaving home) and try something new and different, or find some of your old favorites that you've been longing for.
There are two indexes to check through. You can check by city, or by food. For a good look at what's inside, the book, click on the 'Look Inside" link to several pages to browse through. The recipes range from meals as simple as Biscuits and Eggs to the more exotic tastes like Veal Scallops with Gorgonzola Sauce. You'll find several different ways of making the most everyday things, like French Toast, depending on what State or Regional taste you're in the mood for that day!

There's an additional perk to this cookbook as well. If you want to get out of your own kitchen and do a little traveling, you will find a little description as well as the addresses and phone numbers for all the Inn's used here, on the pages with their own recipes. In some cases there are nice little sketches of the lodgings as well.

I use this cookbook more than any other in my kitchen. although I haven't loved every single thing I've tried, it is stained and sticky with the remnants of some terrific recipes(some of my favorite pages are in worse shape than others!). Everytime I look through it for a new idea I find one. I love it! You will too.

So have fun, eat hardy and try to get someone else to do the clean-up.....enjoy...Laurie

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for finding forgotten recipes..........2003-01-01

Have both books - and they are both much used in our kitchen. I have been able to find recipes for dishes others would not share based on ingredients. The index of foods is probably the greatest thing about this book and directly contributes to the usability.

Absolutely something for everyone in this book - even holiday recipes. Between the two books, I have noticed a couple of recipes duplicated, but not enough to lessen the value of either.

Definitely one to have on the shelf if you enjoy having a broad sampling of American cooking close at hand!

5 out of 5 stars the american country inn and bed and breakfast cookbook.......2001-07-01

This cookbook is great !!!! i borrowed it from a friend and never gave it back (bad!!!) but it really is a great source for entertaining. Fanstastic and easy recipes. A good way to impress your friends with your cooking. Also what i like is they usually have serveral recipes for similar dishes so lets say you want to make scalloped potatoes - you can look at them all and then kind of use the info to make your own variation with the pieces of the recipes you think sound good. Also it is good if you are doing theme parties. I love asian cooking we were having a party where i needed to bring an asian salad - they have like 5 different types. and they arent what you would expect. Note this is just not breakfast foods - all types of cooking are in this book and from all types of us regions.

5 out of 5 stars I have BOTH American Country Inn books........2000-05-06

They are both terrific. I am waiting for another? I buy them and give them for gifts. There aren't any pictures, but they are not needed. Lots of variety, of both food, and in the variety of the B&B's all over the US.

Book Description

How precisely do the Chinese negotiate contracts and other agreements? Do they follow conventions similar to those of European negotiators? To the Japanese? Is there a pattern or style to their negotiations? These are the types of issues examined and resolved in Pye's guide. The volume is based on extensive interviews with Americans and Japanese who have had considerable first-hand experience negotiating with the Chinese, and an effort has been made to highlight the areas in which there has been the greatest amount of confusion and misunderstanding for American business people. Pye examines each step in the traditionally long negotiating process, from the first contacts to the responses after agreements have been reached. With an emphasis on cultural considerations and troubleshooting techniques, Pye gives solid, practical advice for business firms and individual negotiators. While the emphasis is on practical business negotiations, anyone concerned with Chinese culture will find much to ponder in this book.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars So many words, so few pointers.......2007-01-30

The points of this essay could be conveyed in six concise pages but are buried in page after page of pompous prose. There are some insights -- but the reader has to plow through too many diplomatically (vaguely) worded paragraphs to find them.

5 out of 5 stars Read the Chinese Mind.......2006-11-04

I first read this book 20 years ago when a consultant in Taiwan. After reading it, I felt I had been given the absolute script for how my clients were thinking. I was already successful with them, but this book was tremendously empowering. Even in non-adversarial negotiations, even in life with my Chinese in-laws, the principles gathered and explained by Pye are apropos and valuable.

Pye's own training in psychology well equips him for interpreting human behavior (check out his book on Mao), and his knowledge of modern China and its behavior is invaluable. In this book he lists specific characterics and behaviors common in Chinese negotiations: the way they use information, the way they try to manipulate counterparts, the way they analyze and leverage, the way they manage concessions. And his book is not based on theoretical analysis alone, it is based on interviews and meetings with dozens of business people with actual experience. He smoothly blends and synthesizes a vast budy of experience into this book.

Who would benefit from this book?

- Anyone doing business in China or with the Chinese
- Anyone working together with Chinese professionally
- Anyone teaching Chinese people
- Anyone married to a Chinese
- Anyone going to China for more than a couple of weeks
- Anyone dealing with China in political areas

By the way, Pye's other writings and books dealing with China are equally valuable. In late 2003, the Harvard Business Review featured an article on negotiating with the Chinese that was excellent. It never mentioned Pye, but said very little that he had not articulated many years before.

Read this and be enlightened. I have more than 20 years of business experience in Asia, speak Chinese, and count this as one of the most helpful books I have read on this culture.
