This extraordinary gallery includes the work of Enrico Mazzanti, Carlo Chiostri, Attilio Mussino, Frederick Richarson and Charles Folkard, making Pinocchio’s fantastic encounters and tender moments a truly magical trip that will appeal to book lovers and collectors of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars The "real" Pinocchio.......2007-09-02

This is a lovely book. I have purchased several copies for grandchildren. All of Cooper Edens books are great resources for collectors of great illustrators, but can be confusing to small children who can't understand why characters look different on every page.I still buy all of his books for myself and will for my grandchildren when they are older. Pinocchio, because he is wooden is recognizable in all his different renditions. I believe my five year old grandson will love this book as I do. While Disney was a fixture of my childhood and I do want my grandchildren to see these films so different from modern children's fare, it is very important to me that they read at some time the full texts of "Pinocchio"," Peter Pan", "Alice in Wonderland" and of course Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, Perrault and Aesop. Children will read if they are read to often. I can't wait to share Mark Twain and Dickens with my babies. Now please Mr.Edens, Give us a collection of the wonderful illustrators of "The Waterbabies" with the full text!

The Chinese-American illustrator Ed Young won a Caldecott Medal for his book Lon Po Po: A Red-Riding Hood Story From China. Here he takes on another classic children's tale and transforms it with his collages from cloth, string, grainy paper, and scraps. Pinocchio's often frightening world is rendered in rich color and deep texture, so that the moral of the adventure, that honesty and modesty are the only sources of our humanity, becomes even more powerful. Young has also included some of the darker plot elements that subsequent Disneyfied versions chose to obscure or leave out.

5 out of 5 stars People Make Such a Big Deal Out of Continuity..........2006-10-21

One of the first things I noticed about this book was Pinocchio's awful behavior. He bites Gepetto's wig off and then gets Gepetto arrested. He even kills what appears to be the original Jimminy Cricket in Chapter 4. My goodness!

After Gepetto gets back to feed and clothe the hungry Pinocchio, Pinocchio promises to be a good boy and go to school. Gepetto doesn't have much money, so he sells his own coat for Pinocchio to have a school book. In an act of poor judgement, Pinocchio trades the book to see a puppet show, and that's where the adventure begins.

Pinoccho's fantastic journey is creative and fun, despite obvious continuity problems. Gepetto is the one that names Pinocchio, but every character in the book seems to magically know the puppet's name beforehand, without even having to ask. I don't understand. It's not like Pinocchio is famous or anything, unlike what the Disney film portrays.

It should also be noted that Pinocchio can't read a poster, but is somehow able to read a gravestone, with no schooling whatsoever taking place between the two events.

Do these continuity flaws distract from the literary merit of the tale? Absolutely not. We see little Pinocchio, with his clothes of paper and hat of bread, delving into (and soonafter repenting from) the same common misdeeds, not unlike the people Israel of the Old Testament. He is thrown in jail, forced to be a watchdog, turned into a donkey, and even hanged. A blue-haired fairy saves him over and over again, and eventually he becomes a real boy.

One of my favorite things about the book is its discouragement of laziness. Pinocchio asks a guy pulling a cart for money, and the guy says, "I'll gladly give you money, if you help me pull this cart." Pinocchio claims such a task is beneath him, so the man adds something along the lines of, "Why don't you eat a few slices of your pride to fix that hunger problem of yours."

This book is extremely creative and encourages a strong work ethic. I can see how it inspired such a famous film. I hate the cover though...the artwork is way too Disney-ized and doesn't match the illustrations in the book at all. Spend a few extra bucks to get a better cover, unless you're ultra-cheap (like me).

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2006-03-01

This book is such a classic, the age-old story presented in a perfect-sized paperback was just what I wanted.

3 out of 5 stars a classic human,childish tale.......2001-10-30

No question about it that this story is enduring and popular because it speaks innocently into the heart of every human being. Clearly the puppet Pinocchio in here reflects the fate of a child or a person who obstinately takes only his own way and refuses to heed the advises of wisdom, but who would end up never without a sweet remorse. The theme is developed in an active and playful way and sometimes in a tedious way. Its plots are as tenacious as a rascal, too unwilling to explore other ways of presenting a lesson or an experience. The lines drawn between good and evil are too hard and fast, and can be overly childish and even disappointing compared with other classic children's stories. But of course this one written by Collodi (the original creator) is my favorite among other many versions that I had read or seen. An enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars Donýt read the puppet version, read the Real Thing!.......2001-07-03

Of course you already know the story of Pinocchio, right? Who doesn't? Millions have been charmed by the story of the naughty puppet that wanted to become a real boy. His adventures are hardly new, as Pinocchio is in turn carved by Geppetto, rebellious against his father, disobedient to the good fairy, victimized at the hands of the deceitful cat and fox, changed into a donkey, rescued with his father in the whale, and eventually becomes a Real Boy.

But have you read the Original Pinocchio? Most people do not know that there are two versions of Pinocchio. One is the simplified version that Disney has given us, the version most people are familiar with. The other is The Real Thing, The Original. Along-side The Real Thing, the simplified Disney version is like Pinocchio the puppet - charming, but wooden and simple. The Real Thing, however, is like Pinocchio the real boy - charming, and full of life. This edition by Carlo Collodi is that Real Thing.

Although story of Pinocchio is a tale known to nearly every speaking child, it was first written in Italian. Written by Carlo Lorenzini under the pseudonym Carlo Collodi, it dates back to 1883, when it was serialized in a newspaper and then published as a book with huge success. The 1892 English version was equally well received, but it was the 1940 Walt Disney cartoon that gave Pinocchio the legendary status it enjoys today. Only one problem: Disney took short cuts. Collodi's original story has a richness and charm unmatched by Disney. Collodi's Pinocchio is not about a loveable puppet, but about a bratty puppet who needs to learn an important moral lesson about responsibility. And it resonates with slapstick humour that even Disney cannot equal.

Take the first paragraph: "There was once upon a time ... A king! My little readers will shout together. No, children, you make a mistake. Once upon a time there was a piece of wood." Collodi goes on to relate how this piece of wood is first owned by a carpenter called Mr. Antonio Cherry. When his friend Mr. Geppetto comes to visit, the wood causes a great fight between the two friends by talking and calling Geppetto his hated nickname of Polendina. Geppetto is convinced it is Antonio who is doing the name-calling: "They seized one another's wigs, and even hit and bit and scratched each other. At the end of the fight Geppetto's yellow wig was in Mr Antonio's hands, and the carpenter's grey wig between Geppetto's teeth. `Give me my wig!' said Mr Antonio. `You give me mine, and let us make a peace treaty!' So the two little old men, each taking his own wig, shook hands, and promised to be good friends forever." But moments later, the fighting and name calling resumes ("Blockhead!" "Donkey!" "Ugly monkey!". When peace is restored, with honours even, "they shook hands again, and vowed to be good friends for ever. Then Geppetto took the piece of wood and, thanking Mr Antonio, went limping home." And so that's how Geppetto ends up with the wood that later became Pinocchio.

This is just a small taste of the sparkling and rich humour that is largely absent from most contemporary renditions of this famous tale. Taking their cue from Disney, most modern stories have retained Collodi's story-line, but lost the delightful humour. The Original is darker in tone than the simplified version (assassins try to murder Pinocchio and leave him swinging from a tree, and Pinocchio's threatened punishment of death for failing to take his medicine is announced by the appearance of rabbit undertakers) , but also has a wealth more action, excitement, and humour. As long as you're only familiar with the simplified version of Pinocchio, you'll think of Pinocchio as a wooden and old story for little kids. But anyone who is familiar with The Real Thing, The Original by Carlo Collodi, knows that just like Pinocchio himself, the Real Pinocchio story is in the end no wooden puppet, but a living and breathing classic.

5 out of 5 stars Rabbit Undertakers and a Dead Girl.......2000-08-27

This is not Disney's watered-down and water-logged *Pinocchio* -- this is the book that has the real stuff, and if children like the Disney movie, it's because they're getting a hint of the wonders of Collodi's book.

First: my five year old insisted I read this book to him twice in a row. Yes, I left out the part where Pinocchio actually bites off the paw of a cat and spits it out, but my boy revelled (from the safe distance of bed and sippy cup in hand) in the assassins who pursue Pinocchio, try to kill him, and leave him swinging from a tree. The incidents in this book are highly evocative: a little girl announces that all the people in a house are dead (she included); rabbit undertakers appear when Pinocchio won't take his medicine; Pinocchio is almost fried as a fish (and drowned, and hanged, etc.). There's a talking cricket, but he's annoying and, happily, does *not* burst into song.

Second: This book centers around dream-logic. The book makes mechanical gestures towards cause and effect, but it really works the way a child thinks and the way a child worries -- it reassures a child that not everything that happens is reasonable. Perhaps Collodi meant this book to be moralistic -- certainly there are lessons constantly to be learned. But that the least of this text: this is a story about a boy who can't quite be a boy because he's naughty and disobedient, and he finds it isn't easy *not* to be naughty. Grown-ups have all sorts of rules, and a lot of them don't make much sense. After all, we all come into this world not yet human, and we all struggle to figure out what is expected of us.

The illustrations are are pleasing and plentiful, and I know it will only be a matter of time before my five year old asks for the story again. I'll be glad to read it. The worth of the tale is far greater than the worth of the simple (but good) morals it contains.

3 out of 5 stars A Familiar Story Made into a Primer - a review of Ms. Hillert's "Pinocchio".......2006-10-23

This is a nice little reader that is listed as a 1.4 on the Guided Reading Leveled book list, which means for most of us that it is a book for first graders.

There are 72 different words in this book. Most of them are fairly simple like: am, and, big, run, play and you. But others are a little more challenging: boat, comes, father, funny, house, pretty, school, and something. Find below some of the text from one of the more difficult pages:

What do you have there?
You can do something good
with it.
Oh, come with us and see
what you can do.

Although Margaret Hillert has written about 100 of these primers and this one is fairly popular with my children (boy and girl; 4 and 6 respectively), I wouldn't necessarily suggest it as a primer for children who are not familiar with the Pinocchio story.

The problem with the book is that unlike most of her other books (such as the Billy Goats Gruff) this one has some plot inconsistencies. For example, we see Pinocchio's father heading out in a boat to look for him, without any explanation for why that makes sense.. Water had never entered into the story previous to this, and on the previous page Pinocchio was on land running away from some school-avoiding bullies.

Three Stars. [C+]. A good basic primer for those in the kindergarten to first grader range. The artwork is appealing to children, and the story is probably familiar. If the story is not familiar you might find the storyline a little 'jumpy'. As a Read-aloud it is too simple.

Book Description

The story of the wooden puppet who learns goodness and becomes a real boy is famous the world over, and has been familiar in English for over a century. From the moment Joseph the carpenter carves a puppet that can walk and talk, this wildly inventive fantasy takes Pinocchio through countless adventures, in the course of which his nose grows whenever he tells a lie, he is turned into a donkey, and is swallowed by a dogfish, before he gains real happiness. This new translation does full justice to the vibrancy and wit of Collodi's original. Far more sophisticated, funny, and hard-hitting than the many abridged versions (and the sentimentalized film) of the story would suggest, Ann Lawson Lucas's translation captures the complexity of Collodi's word-play, slapstick humour, and immediacy of dialogue. An adult reader will recognize social and political satire, and the invaluable introduction and notes illuminate the cultural traditions on which Collodi drew.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Heavy, allegorical morality tale.......2007-07-21

My children and I have just completed this book, with beautiful illustrations by Innocenti, as a read-aloud. I have never been acquainted with any Pinocchio other than the anemic, sanitized Disney versions reflected also in the Little Golden Books. The cautions by others to be careful with young children are worthy of consideration, for this book has terrors aplenty, both in words and illustrations, but I find both words and illustrations to be marvelous.

I am beginning to "open the door" to the difficult realities of the world for my children, and find beautiful allegorical literature to be just the ticket. The illustrations are beautifully rendered, but some are also quite scarey. Frequently, a following page will have a small cameo of a detail from the full illustration of a preceding page which draws the attention to that moral heart of a complex picture. I prefer this introduction to the reality of wickedness in the world (in words and illustrations) to the soul-numbing introductions to wickedness rampant in television and movies which give no time for concern for reflection.

Some of my favorite themes are emphasized also - the redeeming power of love and forgiveness, the association of both forgiveness AND repentance prior to the resolution of relationship, the surpassing value of wisdom and the often difficult trials that must come before the heart is ready to embrace it.

I am especially struck by Pinocchio's occasional recounting of his adventures as the tale unfolds. In the beginning of the tale, his recounting is filled with blaring examples of falsehood and complete lack of self-examination or evaluation. Everything that happens to him is someone else's fault and there is little association of cause and event. As the tale unfolds, however, Pinocchio's self-examination increases in accuracy, and his self-examination also becomes more accurate.

I think this allegorical tale has much value for young children, as does Hinds' Feet on High Places and The Pilgrim's Progress.

5 out of 5 stars Good size, well printed, looks good........2007-01-11

A gift for my grand daughter, it seems to be a good book. I haven't heard her comments yet (it was a Xmas gift and she's still working through the rest of the gift pile)

5 out of 5 stars 2005 revised unabridged edition illustrated by Innocenti.......2006-12-22

First off, to clear things up, this page contains a few reviews of other editions of Pinocchio, which should be seperated out by their proper ISBN numbers. This review refers to the 2005 hardcover from Creative Editions. This is a revised version, first published in 1998, this edition features a new translation of the full, unabridged text, more lyrical than some older translations, and quite faithful to the original Italian text. Also, this edition has several additional illustrations, and has been handsomely re-designed. Altogether, I find this to be my absolute favorite edition of Pinnocchio, and I even bought it again, to replace my much-loved earlier edition. I prefer the new translation to the older translation used before, and the addition of more illustrations and the re-design make this a superior edition.

I first found this book in a thrift store, and the inscription indicated it was a misguided gift to a young child from his grand-parents... Don't make this mistake, this version of Pinocchio is definitely not intended for young children. Parents may want to look elsewhere if they are expecting a tame children's book. This is a sophisticated and somewhat graphically illustrated edition, and it is not the Disney-fied version of Pinocchio that many people expect. If you are unfamiliar with the differences between the original story, and the popular sanitized versions, you might be shocked at first. The story is actually very dark, brutal, & surreal, and the illustrations of, say, Pinocchio getting hung in a tree, are really too dark for very young children.

That being said, I still whole-heartedly recommend this edition for older readers wanting an artistic and unexpurgated version of this incredible tale. This is one of the best modern translations of the text I've read, so I would recommend it to literature students and people interested in Italian folklore over most of the other versions available.

The artwork is what drew me to this book when I first saw it. You simply must see these illustrations to appreciate them. The detailed, large-scale, and subtlely colored drawings are a moody and perfect accompaniment to this version of the text. I pick this book up often, just to look at the amazing pictures and re-read some of my favorite parts.

Overall, I am thrilled with this revised edition of a book I already considered a classic among illustrated books. I recommend it to scholars of folklore, lovers of sophisticated illustrated books, and curious readers looking for a dark, surreal and wondrous book.

5 out of 5 stars This is NOT an abridgement, this is a great translation of the full text!.......2006-03-08

I own several copies of Pinocchio both English and Italian texts, and this is one of my favorite translations as Ms. Lucas takes great care with conveying the original intent of Collodi's story and characters -- (even down to the translated names used for the characters). I'm not sure what the previous reviewer was referencing, (it may be the review from the library school journal--which may have been an abridgement for grade-schoolers, no longer in print)(???). If you find a copy of this book, I'd recommend buying it. It has the full 36 chapters, the original illustrations by Mazzanti, and extensive notes at the end. A lot of care went into this project, better than most other unabridged translations currnently available.

5 out of 5 stars This is the real Book........2006-01-07

I understand that for people who only see the Disney's movie this book can seem dangerous, but this is the REAL STORY of Pinocchio.
For me (I live in Italy) the story is familiar and I remember to have read it when I was 6 or 7, without any danger of my "child psicology".
Unfortunately, English speaking people haven't seen the wonderful Italian film of Pinocchio of the 70s (directed for the Italian TV by Comencini with Nino Manfredi, Gina Lollobrigida, Franco Franchi, Ciccio Ingrassia and others), that could help people who haven'e read the original book to have another perspective of the story...

I thought Pinocchio and his Puppet show adventure was a great story with major morale values. It shows kids never to talk to strangers and it also teaches them not to lie. I gave this book a five because of these moral values. The book is about our friendly little puppet Pinocchio and his first day of school. But, when two men lead him off the path he finds him self in quite a predicament. So come and join Pinocchio on his adventure as he fights the urge for fame or schooling and enjoy this great story time and time again.

Book Description

Idiosyncratic collages by the acclaimed Sara Fanelli and a clever, authentic translation make this slipcased PINOCCHIO a must-have for collectors of all ages.

Combine Carlo Collodi’s tale of an outrageously naughty wooden boy with the quirky collage work of Sara Fanelli, and you have a striking, beautifully designed edition that captures the ironic and darkly humorous tone of the original text. This authentic unabridged translation by Emma Rose revisits the mischievous Pinocchio, the long-suffering Geppetto, and the ill-fated cricket in a graceful, witty retelling that bears little resemblance to the popularized Disney version. Sara Fanelli’s inventive multimedia illustrations are absolutely arresting, and make a perfect match for Collodi’s classic, picaresque tale.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Fun.......2007-01-06

I absolutely LOVED this book. The story is a classic. Collodi words paint beautiful pictures in your head and with an awesome sense of humor. The morals of the story are priceless. Reading the book actually made me want to be a better person! Sounds kind of silly, but it's true. It's beautiful! And I absolutely love Gris Grimly's illustrations. He has such a unique style which adds to the fantasic air of the story. It's a very good, fun book. Highly recommended if you're looking for a dark adventure with a moral :)

5 out of 5 stars Kids Are Enjoying It.......2007-01-03

My two 8-year-old girls are enjoying hearing me read one chapter a night of Pinocchio. The vocabulary is just a tiny bit above them so it provides a good opportunity to learn new words. The Grimly illustrations fascinate them.

    5 out of 5 stars Truly a Classic Tale..........2004-01-12

I can't say how surprised I was by this book. As a father of a toddler, I've began reading some of the classic children's stories for future consideration, and I was shocked at just how good this was. Prepare your child (or yourself) for a tale that is darker, comical, and so much more rich than the Disney adpatation. For children, Pinnochio has a few nice moral lessons nestled inside. For anyone else, it's a very entertaining read.

5 out of 5 stars The Story As It Was Meant To Be!.......2002-10-22

Before Disney Studios produced their version of "Pinocchio" there was the original by Carlo Collodi, and it's a story everyone should read. The little wooden head didn't start out as the adorable creature you are probably used to; this is a bad boy with a deeply buried heart of gold. In fact, there is a veritable mountain of bad deeds and decisions for Pinocchio to climb out of to redeem himself and earn humanity. Collodi's dry, sly wit is what has kept this book in print since the 1800s. The author took chances and subjected his characters to torments The Mouse would never dare to draw. Fortunately for readers, the perfect tonic for erasing those whimical images is found in the twisted illustrations of Gris Grimly. One look at the cover and you know right away this is hardwood troublemaker just looking for some dilemna to jump into. Grimly's...well...grim creations find a perfect home in this tale of coming-of-age and losing-of-wood.

No matter how much you think you love your "Pinocchio" DVD, give this faithful treatment a try. You'll find yourself distressed that you have been missing out on the wickedly funny original all these years. And, you'll be a Grimly fan for life!
