    Book Description

John A. Crow updates and expands his classic study of the cultural history of Spain and its people. The scope of this richly textured book is remarkable and includes chapters on Roman Spain, the Jews in Spain, the Moors, life in medieval towns, the Golden Age of Spain, and other epochs in Spanish history. In addition, Crow extensively updates later chapters to reflect changing events in the last ten years in Spain, and he expands his chapter on "Franco's Legacy."

5 out of 5 stars Not the best book on Spanish history, but the best on Spain.......2007-04-19

If you are ignorant of Spanish history, this is not the place to start. This is, as the title suggests, an "interpretation" that assumes a fair amount of previous knowledge. However, if you want to understand why Spanish people are the way they are today, this is the best book I have ever read for that purpose. I am an American who has lived in Spain for 18 years and am married to a Spaniard, and while I don't know if all the facts are correct (as disputed by a previous reviewer), I can say with assurance that the "interpretation" of those facts rings true. I gave this book to a German friend who has also lived here for many years, and he described reading it as, "a light bulb going on in my head". Be prepared for a sad story, though; since the glorious medieval times when cities like Cordoba where far more enlightened than any other in Europe, the story of Spain has been one of many missed opportunities. It is true that this book was last updated in 1985, and therefore does not capture present-day Spain. If you are looking for an excellent book on contemporary Spain, I can suggest Ghosts of Spain: Travels Through Spain and Its Secret Past

5 out of 5 stars Memorable, deep, and completely outstanding.......2006-07-10

This history book has several things going for it. First, it's eminently readable; the author is a skillful writer who keeps you thinking about the subject matter, not his own style. Second, the reader's interest is doubled by the author's constant interweaving of the development of Spanish character into the history. Thirdly, the author always attempts explanations of the deeper historical processes at work, keeping the (interesting anyway) history from devolving into just descriptions of events, kings, and battles.

The middle third of the book is devoted to explicating the Spaniard's eight-hundred year struggle to expel the Moors. Memorably pointing out that the Moors had superior economic strength, superior technology, vastly greater learning (including science, of course), the author stresses the key factors about Spanish character that enabled their ultimate triumph. The situations at almost any time during this period were never simple, of course---sometimes groups of Moors and Christians would be allied against other groups of Moors and Christians, and there would also be periods of relative peace on the penisula.

I wish that all history books would use John Crow's book as a model.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Overview Of Spanish History.......2004-12-15

If one is looking for a brief overview of Spanish history, art, and literature then this book might just be what is desired. While it does not go into great depth, it does provide the reader with an overall basis of beginnings of the Spanish peoples, the civilizations that invaded the Iberian pennisula (Visigoths, Romans, Moors), and describes each of the monarchs.

In addition, the author does provide an insight into the greater known artists of Spain and some of their more well-known works. He also explains the literary talent that Spain has contributed to the world.

The is a good, if not in depth, summary of the events leading up to the Spanish Civil War and what it meant politically to the country. The author covers a good deal of the Franco era, possibly because he was in the country during that time. Still, it provides the reader with a conceputalization of the period. I was a little disappointed that the author did not bring out the less valued parts of Franco's Spain. By reading this book one would think Franco was very nearly a saint. Still, I was thankful for the knowledge of international affairs during the Franco era, and America's reaction (or should I say non-reaction) to it.

The last chapter, "Spain Today", I feel is totally irrelevant. I would recommend not bothering to read it. This book was first written in 1963, and the last update to it was 1984/85. As the author describes "Spain Today" it is 20 years ago. A lot can, and does, happen in 20 years and I feel this chapter should either be updated or completely left out of the book. If one is reading this to educate themselves on current mores and values in Spain, this is not the chapter to gain that information. Because of the dated material in the final two chapters, which I feel are a waste of a reader's time, I felt I had to give this book 3 stars.

If one is looking for a book to provide a brief, easy to read history of Spain, including artists and authors, then this might be a worthy read. If one is looking for the modern day Spain, then this book is not of much use.

4 out of 5 stars To a reader from Corona, CA United States.......2004-06-19

If you say that until this day NOBODY is sure of the origins of the Iberians, then how can you wholeheartedly dispute his claims. I think what he writes is just like every other history book, unless you were there you can't really know what is completely the truth. There are grains of truth and grains of personal opinion in every history book and historical opinion, including your post. Also, many books have been written that the Moors (and I don't say Arabs because the Moors were not Arabs) were in Spain for about 800 years. You can read how they were described by nearer contemporaries than us including Shakespeare's Othello. To dispute his claims is disputing many claims from many books.

    1 out of 5 stars a very detrimental BOOK!!.......2002-10-11

A very detrimental book. Amazingly wrong point of view.
To say that "the Spaniards spring from an Afro-Semitic race" is just a wrong start.
To say that the Arabs were in Spain for about 800 years...is not to have any idea about the history of Spain!!. In reality, the Iberians could have been today's Basques, incoming from the Georgia plateau, as of today no one is certain about the origins of the Iberians. The Basque were never touch by the conquest of the Arabs, nor the Galicians, nor the Cantabrians. In Catatonia the Arabs were expel by the Franks by the year 977 (that is 220 years after their incursion in this region). Valencia was liberated by 1248. Only in Granada did the Arabs lived for around 800 years (most of them of Syrian descent, is that north Africa?) . Spain is a country of different ethnicity's, some with direct Celtic ancestry like the Asturs, Galicians and Cantabrians, some like the Catalans with Frankish descendants, and some, like Extremadura or Andalucia from Mediterranean past, and still some like the Basque, with an uncertain past, but a unique history, never subdue neither by Visigoths, nor Romans, nor Arabs.
I have a PHD from the University of Salamanca, and I could not disagree more with John A Crow. I found many inaccuracies in this book. If you would like to learn about the true history of Spain, or just learn about the life and culture of Spain be aware of this issue. Crow writes out of his personal opinion...A very dangerous thing to due. I could write a book about the US base in my opinion and I'm sure I would offend many people, and at the same time I would probably be inaccurate. Crow refuses facts over his own ideas. I could give you a list the inaccuracies (many of them!!) but I have nor space nor time.
Take a trip to Spain (south, north, east and west so as to appreciate the differences of the people and the culture and the history) and read some good books about the history of Medieval Spain (Joseph F. O'Callahan, B. Netanyahu, are good books), and learn the true history of this unique land.

5 out of 5 stars This series helped boost SAT scores!.......2000-07-31

We have been using this series in our homeschool with great success. It's very easy to use because the words are arranged with a logical sequence to them. First a root prefix/suffix is taught and then the words derived from this are studied. My son, who usually dislikes language arts, did extremely well and enjoyed it. He got very high scores on the SAT test as a result. An additional surprise was that when I took the GRE test this year, I got a very high score on the language exam as well! I credit Vocabulary from Classical Roots with helping us achieve these scores.

          Book Description

Steadfast love and devotion, dashed hopes, and a triumph over pain have been constants in Virginia C. Li's family and in her own life. In this thoroughly engaging chronicle of her family's journey, readers will come to know what inspires so many immigrants and first-generation citizens to dedicate themselves and their lives to the betterment of their ancestral homelands. Li's narrative also provides insight into the understanding of the creation and spirit of the two great worlds of China and the United States.

5 out of 5 stars One Root, Many Flowers.......2003-11-05

Virginia Li's ONE ROOT, MANY FLOWERS depicts Chinese society to the depth that is possible only for a cultural insider. This book is a fascinating account of her family history in China--from the last decades of 19th century up to 1948, when the author left for America as a teenager.

Li's portrayal of her father, the legendary KMT general and a national hero in modern Chinese military history, is a deeply-felt profile. General Li Hanhun was a passionate idealist, a complex political figure, and loving family man. Virginia Li's book, for those interested in modern Chinese history and U.S.-China relations, will be seized upon with great eagerness and genuine intellectual excitement.

4 out of 5 stars A Treasure Chest of Stories.......2003-10-30

I found Li's memoir engrossing, informative, and quite frequently very moving. I disagree with the comment that Li seemed a dispassionate observer; on the contrary, Li's feelings and unique perspective permeate the piece as she tells her family's multi-generational history. This is one of the great charms of the book; Li gives us a treasure chest of stories as she speaks candidly about her family's struggles, sacrifices, and courage in the face of wartime danger and personal tragedy. Li's love and filial respect for her parents, her complex and passionate feelings toward an evolving China, and her commitment to public service spoke poignantly to this reader. As an added bonus, Li illustrates and explains certain aspects of Chinese culture, thus enabling this reader to learn more about China within the context of the histories Li relates.

4 out of 5 stars a fascinating personal and historical account.......2003-09-01

Normally I find the Publisher's Weekly reviews quite helpful, but I couldn't disagree more with this one. I found this book to be delightful! Admittedly, it's not without its idiosyncrasies: a lot of territory is covered, and you do at times wish for more details on some of the stories. I could almost imagine hearing her tell the stories around a dinner table, and found myself wishing I could be there to ask questions. But to me, that's part of its fascination. "From One Root Many Flowers" is really an oral history put to the pen, walking the line between objective historical chronicle, family lore, and personal reminiscence. Its stories are very much filtered through the lens of the author's personal experience, perspective, perhaps even biases. In a way, we get to know the author herself through the stories she chose to share.
I seriously disagree with the reviewer's assertion that the book makes Li seem like a dispassionate observer. To me, the author's passion and emotional attachment to the material is evident throughout. Whether relating a personal experience or passing on stories from her parents, this is clearly very affecting stuff for her, and as I reader I found myself very caught up in it.
At its simplest level, "From One Root Many Flowers" is a rich tale of a family's journey through wars and political upheaval in China through the American immigrant experience. At a more subtle level, the book offers interesting insights on many aspects of social history in two countries, including gender roles and race relations. A terrific read and well worth your time.

          4 out of 5 stars A Modern Epic.......2003-08-24

The memoir vividly depicts the contemporary and cultural history of China from the mid nineteenth century to the present as seen through the eyes of three generations of the Li family. Its a towering story that reflects family values and solidarity in times of war, migration, and adaptation to the new American soil. The author's mother's rescue work which saved 30,000 refugee children during the Sino-Japan War was a moving tribute to the human spirit. Her father, the soldier-poet, was the embodiment of Confucian values in times of war, social upheaval, and throughout his entire life. Though she never claimed to be a feminist, the author's own struggle and triumph as a renowned teacher and international consultant speaks for women's empowerment.

          Book Description

Set in the war-torn world of Mughal India and first published in the gathering darkness of the 1930s, the three novels collected in The Root and the Flower are stories of intrigue, murder, and romance; of Tantric abandonment and Buddhist renunciation; of emotional delirium and spiritual adventure. This enthralling visionary trilogy is, as Penelope Fitzgerald remarks in her introduction, a "strange masterpiece," and one of the unsung glories of modern literature.

First off the mark, a slight disclaimer: I am of a very, very removed (to the nth degree, one might say) relative of this author, and while I was always aware of him and his father from an early age as the only authors in English literature slightly related to me, I always shied away from them because of 1) A dislike of the Theosophical twaddle for which the father is known and 2) A superstitious fear of what I might find that reminded me of myself, a fear that "blood will out" as it were.

That having been said, I found this trilogy both enchanting, and tediously tendentious, by turns. The writing is superb throughout and the scenes depicted deliciously evocative. Even at its most tedious and ham-handed, the writing (almost) always manages to pull one through. A review of the three separate books on its own merits is, I think, the best way to go about reviewing this trilogy. They are very different, indeed, despite a superficial show of having the same characters in play and having the same Asiatic backdrop. Before embarking on this, however, it is necessary to put to rest a criticism that has been voiced concerning all three books: To wit, that Myers never went to India (though he did travel extensively and to nearby Ceylon) and is therefore unqualified to write a book about it. The book is set during the reign of the Emperor Akhbar in Sixteenth Century India, where nobody has been for quite some time. You may as well criticise an author for not travelling to 16th Century England or America. As is commonplace: "The past is a different country. They do things differently there." So, on to the books:

1.) The Near and the Far---This is my favourite of the three, though clearly, I think, not what my distant relative meant to be the best. This trilogy has been dubbed a philosophical novel, quite rightly so. But in this book, the philosophy, such as it is, complements rather than obtrudes into the beautiful passages and contains the characters to whom most mortals can relate: Hari and Sita. Both characters are flawed, in a sort of moral sense, that is. On the other hand, they are the only three-dimensional, fully fleshed out characters in the whole trilogy. As Sita puts it to herself, "She preferred to love, even if loving meant suffering." And who of us doesn't?
2.) Prince Jali----Here, things start to unravel for the book as a work of art. Prince Jali is thirteen years old and though the book is described as a "Bildungsroman" by Penelope Fitzgerald, with whom I disagree on just about everything, in the Introduction. It isn't. Jali is thirteen at the beginning as well at the end of the book, there is really no detectable change or growth or "coming of age" of the character, which is what a Bildungsroman is all about. The critics are right about this one: It's a very flimsily veiled philippic reflecting Myers's own experience with Bloomsbury and "artistic" groups in general. Also, a caveat for homosexual readers: You are bound to be offended by Myers's depiction of Prince Daniyal and his "Camp" of catamites, which is really what this book is about. To my mind, it should have been entitled The Camp.
3.) Rajah Amar----Here the philosophy becomes overbearing and the writing heavy-handed and we are, indeed, a far cry from the deftness of touch in The Near and the Far. Clearly, Amar, with his renunciation of the world and unworldly affect are clearly what Myers admired most and desired most to effectively convey. But, really, it just won't do. The English humanist, Smith, for example, is so clearly a take on Bertrand Russell that the book seems to be a bit of a sham. Furthermore, the confusing political machinations that have always been in the trilogy come to the fore here and make for, perhaps deliberately, unpleasant and confusing reading. It is clear that Myers was attempting to contrast all this worldliness with Amar's calm (until the end) renunciation of it, but he just doesn't pull it off to good effect.

Summation: My distant relative once said, "Why should anyone want to go on living once they know what the world is like?" This thread of melancholy pessimism and renunciation is especially evident in the last book. It comes as no great surprise, to this reader at least, that said distant relative took his own life. What is surprising is that he was, nevertheless, able to write about the beauty of life and love so poignantly. Even in the third book, which I find generally disappointing, there are stirring passages like this:

Later, when all was quiet again, he and I walked down the bare spur of a hill to a point where we could look out over the plains. The night had been dark, but now the moon, which was nearly full, came out and hung above the low mists that lay like a sea beneath us. That ghostly sea was ruddy as if dust and mist were mixed up together; and it foamed against the globe of the reddening moon as she sank. Spectral and lurid she sank, and all that region of the sky about her became the scene of a silent symbolic tragedy. P.492

This sort of brilliance and enchantment is what keeps one reading and makes the work remarkable, for all its faults. As Amar says, "When Art is great, it is by virtue of something that is not itself..." What Amar is talking about, of course, is the transcendental. And it seems to me he is spot on. From Proust to Thoreau to Shelley to, well, any great artist, we know this trait when we feel it as the mark of great literature. I humbly submit that, especially in the first book of this trilogy, Myers, with his bewitching descriptions meshing human love and enchanting beauty has attained to this realm and deserves to be ranked as one of the (perhaps lesser) immortals.

          Book Description

The seductive nature of evil is fully embraced by Baudelaire, Nietzsche, and Hitler. Instead of viewing these men in their traditional roles as poet, philosopher, and politician, Hill takes their most notorious writings and points out the insights, images, and surprising facts about evil in their interpretations. Viewing these men as thinkers presents an opportunity to see their powerful imaginations at work, mixing theories with observations and actions to reach their final attitude toward power. However, as the author demonstrates, ideas put on paper are not the same as ideas put into action. The book makes the transition from written theories to the real world with historical and current examples of oppression, violence, and torture. Covering many disciplines — philosophy, history, politics, ethics, psychology, literature, aesthetics, religion, and sociology — the book draws on extensive present-day scholarship of Nietzsche, the problem of evil, and the Holocaust and argues persuasively that power can be imposed through nonviolent movements.

A poet, a philosopher and a politician each understood the attraction of evil, depicting it in their respective genres; but it takes religious hermit and scholar Claire Ortiz Hill to put the three together under one cover in Roots And Flower Of Evil In Baudelaire, Nietzsche And Hitler pulling together their writings to examine and contrast philosophy with historical events in which evil is manifested. Her comparison will interest college-level students of both literature and philosophy and will provide excellent material for classroom discussion and further inquiry.
