First published in 1895, America's greatest novel of the Civil War was written before 21-year-old Stephen Crane had "smelled even the powder of a sham battle." But this powerful psychological study of a young soldier's struggle with the horrors, both within and without, that war strikes the reader with its undeniable realism and with its masterful descriptions of the moment-by-moment riot of emotions felt by me under fire. Ernest Hemingway called the novel an American classic, and Crane's genius is as much apparent in his sharp, colorful prose as in his ironic portrayal of an episode of war so intense, so immediate, so real that the terror of battle becomes our own ... in a masterpiece so unique that many believe modern American fiction began with Stephen Crane.

The Red Badge of courage is a book that actually tells about how people felt about the Civil war.It tells of their family's discomfort of their decision. It is a book that tells a how a young soldeir fights in the war. Many die around this young boy as he goes through the heart of battle. The book has many exiting twists that mostly are not predictible from the start of the page. Will the young soldier die, or will he live? You will only know if you read the exiting story of Henry Flemming in The Red Badge of Courage.

Got the book quickly - and in good shape - Thank you

5 out of 5 stars The Red Badge of Manhood.......2007-01-08

The Red Badge of Courage is a classic American novel about a boy, who is changed into a man during his experiences in the Civil War. The book does a good job of showing this progression from start to end. In the beginning the protagonist, Henry Fleming, is a scared, young, and inexperienced soldier, who fears that he will run from his first battle. However, at the end of the novel, Henry and his friend Wilson lead the regiment to victory over the rebels.

The thing that Crane does very well in his book is to make a very realistic environment. The story is set in the country, which has many forests, rivers, and fields. The soldiers in the story must overcome these obstacles as they fight the enemy. Also, Crane uses rural dialect to add more depth to conversations that the soldiers have amongst themselves. Flashbacks are used in this novel to recall experiences in Henry's past. For example, Henry has a flashback in the beginning chapter of the novel that tells readers why Henry has enlisted in the army.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good war novel, and is in high school, or older. However, even if you don't like war stories, you might still enjoy this book.

3 out of 5 stars Black and Blue Badge .......2006-12-21

Stephen Crane's Red Badge of Courage is considered an epic American novel. I for one, am not really sure why. It is OK, but compared to the best of Hemingway, Roth, Heller, etc. it is like comparing backyard badmitton with your nephew to the NFL.

What is most interesting is how literature has changed in 100+ years. Crane wrote this thing as a magazine serialization, which does not exist anymore to my knowledge. Red Badge is also full of wind-bag characters who never get to the point, and the ending is rather ambivalent. The protagonist does not really have a name, he is a coward, and there is no love interest except his mother, who only appears on the first 10 pages.

Other than that, this thing is OK. Crane was too young to have been in the Civil War, so to his credit he did impeccable and thorough research with veterans, mostly conducted in saloons. Crane personally was a disaster, his life was not much longer than this novel.

But seriously, read the Red Badge if you did not do so in high school. The descriptions of the battles, especially the confusion, chaos, inability to establish objectives, focus, or leadership, is not what is portrayed in John Wayne movies. The protagonist is very unsure about his future and his role in the war; this is a great theme that Crane did not develop fully in this tiny book. But there is great insight into why the men fought, what motivated them, and how they were inspired to take on impossible, dangerous, and mindless tasks.

Book Description

Following its initial appearance in serial form, Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage was published as a complete work in 1895 and quickly became the benchmark for modern anti-war literature.

Although the exact battle is never identified, Crane based this story of a soldier's experiences during the American Civil War on the 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville. Many veterans, both Union and Confederate, praised the book's accurate representation of war, and critics consider its stylistic strength the mark of a literary classic.

This Prestwick House Literary Touchstone Edition includes a little-known section entitled The Veteran, which depicts Henry Fleming as an old man discussing his experiences in the Civil War with his grandson. Additionally, a glossary and reader's notes are provided to help the reader understand the language of 19th century America.

Crane, Stephen. The Red Badge of Courage. New Jersey: Transaction
Publishers, 1997.
Review by Miraya Potter

The Red Badge of Courage is a novel about the character of a soldier named Henry during the battle at Chancellorsville in 1863. This novel shows you the emotions of the soldiers families, the heartache of death in a war, and how the soldiers felt and the thought process they went through. At the beginning of the novel it reveals the strong and emotional feelings that Henry's mother felt about him leaving. Her face "was stained with tears" when he left for war. His mother is a very strong character and cared for her son deeply. Another strong character is Wilson. Wilson is one of the main reasons as to why Henry became brave and courageous. Once Henry realized that Wilson had doubts and fears, he felt comfort in knowing that he was not the only one with fear. That moment was a tremendous turning point for Henry. Henry entered the army with romantic feelings about the war, however once he was confronted with the reality of war he became scared. As time passed he began to get more and more used to the ideas of war and soon became a "wild cat" in battle, according to his lieutenant. I would strongly recommend this book because it was excellent at showing the human side and the thought process's of a soldier in the civil war.

5 out of 5 stars Often assigned to the young, but perhaps better appreciated by the mature.......2007-07-15

I remember this book being recommended reading when I was around junior high school age, and I also remember trying it and putting it down more than once.

Now, at a considerably more mature stage in life, and having opted for an audio reading, I have finally gotten to this classic, and I now appreciate why it is a classic.

The heartless and utter pointless gore of battle, and the profligate waste of human potential, are the kinds of things you'll probably encounter in any war novel, and they can be pretty hard to stomach. But Crane's real object in this work is the human mind and spirit, especially human capriciousness, vanity, and the powerful instinct to constantly justify and elevate oneself and one's actions in one's mind. This work is a blow-by-blow study in the human ego, its folly, and its ultimate vacuity. What is probably even harder to take than watching one's comrades drop in agony like flies to no good purpose is recognizing, though a fickle fighter's internal monologue, one's own deeply entrenched patterns of defensiveness, rationalization and self-justification, along with our constant scramble to seize the credit for anything at all, things we constantly indulge in whether objective circumstances warrant them or not.

Herein lies for me the great value of this exposé of what we futilely try so hard to do in all we do, down to the most mundane of everyday transactions. For this reason, I recommend this book highly, whatever your age, and regardless of your preconceptions about war novels.

5 out of 5 stars Not a kids' book.......2007-05-14

As a British reader, I just recently read and reviewed this book over on Amazon.co.uk, and I thought I'd have a look at the US reviews for comparison - and immediately realised that this is obviously a "set book" in US schools. I can see the logic - the book is about a young person, it's short and (superficially) exciting, with lots of action, and it has some good moral/ethical themes ripe for class discussion.

Nonetheless, I was not surprised to see a number of negative reviews from kids. I don't think I would have appreciated it as a 13 (or whatever) year old. The writing style (deliberately) reflects the state of mind of the protagonist - confused. This in NOT an "adventure" story, it's a blood-and-guts account of a dirty day in a dirty war. As such, it reminded me very much of some of the recent first-hand accounts of infantrymen in WWII, Korea, Vietnam or even Iraq. It's about the way the mind can obsess on tiny details in the middle of chaos - how sights, smells and sounds become almost hallucinogenic as the mind approaches breaking point. As such, it is astonishing.

But if you want a REAL adventure story (not suitable for the under-13s!) read a biography of Crane himself. Hemingway meets James Dean is the only way to describe it.

4 out of 5 stars Confusing and emotional story of Civil War courage.......2007-03-20

The story of young Henry Flemming, who joins the Union army during the Civil War, despite the wishes of his mother to the contrary. Initially, he is consigned to endless marching, seemingly without purpose, amid arrogant boasting and complaints from those in his regiment. Henry wonders how he'll react once he actually sees battle: will he stand and fight, or turn and run. He does both - firing wildly and prematurely in the initial skirmish, but running scared during the second push when he perceives danger and defeat. He seeks to justify his actions (mostly to himself) and eventually winds up being hit in the head by another soldier before being reunited with his regiment, a wound he portrays to his fellows as having been "shot in the head." But when the second battle comes, he uses his false courage (as well as an insult from a General) to stand and fight, and even surprises himself in the fray as he manages to lead a charge. At the end of the story, he feels he has earned a measure of courage and manhood.

While I found the story strangely compelling and at times hard to put down, I also found it rather difficult to understand and follow. And I don't mean the "rural dialect" which was very well done. What I found confusing was the chaotic descriptions of the events. Often I couldn't understand or follow if what was being described was happening to Henry or if he was witnessing it elsewhere or merely imagining it. Nonetheless, this is a book that tugs at your emotions. From Henry's fear to his shamefulness at running from the battle, to his immature boasting (when he hadn't really done anything), to his eventual courage under pressure, it left me feeling quite troubled by the story. It probably didn't help that I kept expecting him to earn a "red badge of courage" and some horrible ending. I suspect that this is a novel that requires a more careful and considered reading than I gave it, and I may read it again in the future to get a better understanding of the story.

5 out of 5 stars The Civil War.......2007-03-03

If you're a person who reads historical fiction, this the perfect book for you. The protagonist Henry, is like a machine gun when he's in a battle. He will shoot anyone he see's except his soldiers. Henry was the first and fastest to fire even before the captain said fire! He just shot all of his enemies even before his soldiers had a chance. I bet if you read this book you're going to like it.

4 out of 5 stars The Psychology of a Young Soldier.......2006-04-24

The Red Badge of Courage, by Stephen Crane

Stephen Crane was a journalist and covered wars in Mexico, Cuba, and Greece. His life was cut short by tuberculosis, the major killer from the mid 19th to the mid 20th centuries (caused by poverty and poor diets). This is his most famous novel. It tells of the thoughts and actions of Henry Fleming, who leaves his widowed mother to enlist in the war. Crane does not mention the economics of enlisting in the Volunteers. The story is generic so it could apply to many battles, and describes the events to the reader. Tales of battle are found in literature from the Iliad to the Song of Roland, but have been displaced in modern times by detective and spy novels, and their analog on television and films.

This novel is impressionistic, it does not go into details much. A writer is less likely to be caught in errors that way. Some say Crane based this book on the stories he heard as a boy, or maybe from the many newspapers and books he read after the war. Young Henry wonders if he will skedaddle in combat. His fear comes true; but his regiment was scattered after the attack and then regathered. Henry got hit on the head, a bleeding wound (the red badge of courage), but rejoined his unit and continues to fight in the next battle. The moral is that failure can be redeemed in the future.

The timing of the publication may have helped to make it popular. Many of the veterans of the Civil War were beginning to die out, and a novel about a 30-year old war would have interested readers. 1893 saw the worst depression in American history (until the Great Depression). The story of a man who falters then succeeds afterwards would provide symbolic comfort for the many suffering from the economic setback. I wonder if Henry's accidental wound was due to Crane's cynicism? In that era more soldiers died from sickness and disease than from combat. In today's world, farming is still the most dangerous occupation.

5 out of 5 stars Classic novel of the Civil War.......2005-07-01

Stephen Crane's classic novel, "The Red Badge of Courage" is as much about what goes on in the mind of a young soldier as it is about the military action taking place. Henry Fleming goes off to fight, having overblown illusions of a spectacular, mythical epic rather than of the reality of a horrible, brutal war. What he had hoped would be a grand, romantic sendoff by his mother fell short of his expectations. When he gets involved in his first battle, Chancellorsville (which historically was a crushing defeat for the north) he has fears that he might get scared and run. These fears are realized and the novel deals with his efforts to hide his act of cowardice from the rest of his regiment and, to redeem himself. He is a afraid of every question asked of him and distrusts the meaning of statements that are made since he knows what he did and is concerned that his fellows do too. For example, when he talks about the earlier events of the battle, a fellow soldier replies that he is talking as if he fought it by himself. It was an offhanded comment but, to Henry, it took on great significance as he wondered what the soldier meant. Did he in fact know that Henry cut and ran and was, in fact making a pointed statement? Ultimately, the question is whether Henry can become a hero and achieve redemption.

Crane was a very young man when he wrote this novel but, he had mature insights into what makes the human psyche tick. Also, he had a good undrstanding of the battle at Chancellorsville and what went on at the minds of soldiers in the battle. For example, Fleming's regiment was holding off a frontal attack by Lee's troops not realizing that this frontal attack was only a feint. In fact, the real battle was, perhaps, a mile away as troops led by Stonewall Jackson was rolling up General Otis's troops on the left flank. Those in the middle, at times, thought that they were winning the battle because they were focused on what was happening where they were. In a historical perspective, we knew of the disasterous results which were unfolding but, the soldiers in the novel (at a time when there was no communications equipment) saw things on the micro level.

Thye Red Badge of Courage is an American classic and, although I have an interest in the Civil War, I recommend this for all readers who appreciate great literature.

4 out of 5 stars Very good story with interesting descriptions.......2006-12-12

Mark LA-7

The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane is a very interesting and well-written novel that I enjoyed reading. It is about a boy's physical and mental journey during the Civil War. The boy, Henry Fleming, starts out as a cowardly child who wants to join the war and turns into a courageous man. There are many things that happen to him that cause this change.

The book begins with Henry already in the army reminiscing about enlisting against his mother's will. After he does, she supports him, even though she did not agree with his decision. Henry, along with the other men in his regiment, is anxious for his first battle. He and the others are talking about if they would run away from a fight. Henry is unsure of his ability to fight the battle and not run away. He fights well for the beginning of his first battle, but when his regiment returns to the fight, he runs away. Scared, he meets many things that eventually make him decide to go back to the fight.

Over the course of the rest of the book, Henry sees many things that begin to make him stronger and more courageous. Throughout his journey, other soldiers help Henry. As he interacts with them, you can see the development and change of his character. The rest of his journey consists not only of physical, but also mental battles. Though the story takes place in the Civil War, most of the book is about the main character fighting himself.

One conflict in this story is the internal conflict Henry has throughout the book. He is constantly fighting himself over what he should do because for most of the book he is frightened. This is resolved as he gains courage and confidence. You should be able to see this at the end of the story.

I liked this book because it was very descriptive and its story was exciting. It had some themes that were very well portrayed in the book, such as courage. The plot was very interesting and the characters were described very well.

      Book Description

Every generation of readers has interpreted the meaning of The Red Badge of Courage anew. Its appeal is both historical and universal--historical in its Civil War setting and universal in its relating of the experiences of a young man who is thrust into a situation he does not understand and cannot cope with. This collection of historical documents, collateral readings, and commentary will promote interdisciplinary study of the novel and enrich the reader's understanding of its themes and historical context. A wide variety of more than 40 primary documents and firsthand accounts brings to life the Civil War experiences of leaders and soldiers of the Union and Confederacy, especially in the Battle of Chancellorsville, which is the setting for the novel. Carefully selected memoirs, poems, short stories, newspaper articles, and interviews illuminate the historical setting, the themes of cowardice and desertion, battlefield experiences, the soldier's life in camp, and the issue of pacifism as it relates to The Red Badge of Courage as an antiwar novel. Many of these documents appear in print here for the first time. The documents include: memoirs of Civil War generals at Chancellorsville who were in marked disagreement with one another, remembrances of cavalry and foot soldiers, poems by those who experienced the war, short stories by Civil War veterans, a series of newspaper articles on World War II veterans who experienced Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, "The War Prayer" by Mark Twain and "The Wound Dresser" by Walt Whitman, poems and a short story by Stephen Crane, and an interview with a conscientious objector in World War II. Each section of this casebook contains study questions, topics for research papers and class discussions, and lists of further reading. A selection of photos and a map complete the work. This is an ideal companion for teacher use and student research in interdisciplinary, English, and American history courses.

        Book Description

Henry Fleming, a raw Union Army recruit in the American Civil War, is anxious to confirm his patriotism and manhood—to earn his “badge of courage.” But his dreams of heroism and invulnerability are soon shattered when he flees the Confederate enemy during his baptism of fire and then witnesses the horrible death of a friend. Plunged unwillingly into the nightmare of war, Fleming survives by sheer luck and instinct. This edition of Stephen Crane's poignant classic is supplemented by five of his acclaimed short stories as well as selected poetry, offering the full range of this great American author's extraordinary talent.

          Book Description

Bored with farm life, and anxious for some excitement, Henry Fleming sets off to join the Union troops fighting the Civil War. An inexperienced fighter, he is anxious to get into battle to prove his patriotism and courage. He swaggers to keep up his spirits waiting for battle, but when suddenly thrust into the slaughter he is overcome with blind fear and runs from the field of battle.

He is ashamed when he joins the wounded, for he has not earned their "red badge of courage" and becomes enraged when he witnesses the death of his terribly maimed friend. In a confused struggle with his own army's retreating soldiers, he is wounded but not by enemy gunfire. In an effort to redeem himself in his own eyes, he begins to fight frantically and, in the heat of battle, automatically seizes the regiment's colors in a daring charge that proves him truly courageous.

The unnamed battle in the novel has been identified as that as Chancellorsville. While considered one of the most compelling stories of warfare of all time, Stephen Crane had never seen a battle when he wrote The Red Badge of Courage in 1895.

I liked the book but these unabridged tapes where very boaring , the reader has a tiring voice , and the quality of the sound is poor. i think reading the book is a better alternative.

this is a greta book and i really recommend it to anyone who likes to read.

2 out of 5 stars The Red Mark on my Face I Got From Sleeping On This Book........2001-10-31

The book The Red Badge of Courage wasn't with out its points. For example in my history of reading civil war novels, they tend to focus on the politics of the war more then the war it self. This book was more about the fighting and what a man went through in the battles. But what the book gained in action it lost in the long winded description. Also personally the version i had to read contained very little letters, and when i'm nearly asleep from the subject matter those little letters would blur together and really knock me out. It had what i refer to as dictionary print and i think all people out there can relate.
The truth is i really didn't read a whole lot of this book becuase i could get about 7 or 8 pages down before i would start sleeping and the parts i did read were difficult to understand so i would recomend cliff notes for this particular book. All together i gave it 2 stars, So i hope who ever may read this enjoys it more then i did.

2 out of 5 stars this book was boring and I hated it.......2001-04-02

I had to read this book for english class. Before we read the book we read some notes about it and it sounded like a good book. After I read it though, I have to say it sucked. It was a long boring snooze fest. I'd have to say some praise is due but it was just too long, boring, descriptive to keep anybody's attention. I found that even if I read it slowly I couldn't retain any of it. Take my advice and don't read this book unless you absolutely have to.

5 out of 5 stars The Red Badge of Courage Review.......2000-06-04

These Cliff Notes on The Red Badge of Courage were a great help on a project I had to do for school. I didn't have much time and the project was worth a lot of points. With this at hand, I finished the report with all the qualifications, topics and details I needed. If you're in a hurry to read this book or you don't understand it well, get this book.
