2 out of 5 stars Just Okay.......2007-03-27

I am an avid scrapbooker, with many materials to work from, and this book was the least helpful. While cute, and filled some ideas, it isn't very practical for serious scrapbookers. It may be good for beginners to get ideas, but I wouldn't recommend it for the more creative persons.

4 out of 5 stars Very Handy.......2005-08-21

I really enjoyed the book. I have not totally utilized the book yet. (really busy) I can't wait to use it to its fullest. It has a lot of good pics and blurbs that will come in handy when scrapbooking.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2004-01-27

I love this book. It is full of cute expressions and clipart to use on scrapbook pages or cards. There are many topics to choose from including babies, cats and dogs, and seasons. I only wish it came with a cd so it would be easier to print them from my computer.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another great book........2003-10-15

These books are fantastic and great for any crafter. They are a great addition to any craft room and will most certainly help you become more creative.
The possibilities are endless with these books and this book (being the fourth) is no exception.
I don't regret buying this book one bit.

One Happy Crafter,
C.

I found the book to be childish. I was disappointed but my 14 year old niece was thrilled when I gave it to her.

Book Description

If you are stuck for words or creative ideas you should find lots of inspiration in this newly revised edition of Another 500 Heartwarming Expressions For Crafting and Scrapbooking. The third of four books in this popular series, now includes lots more chunky lettering styles, page layout ideas, project instructions and now for the first time, color samples of projects are featured on the back cover. These new projects include a unique baby announcement card that pulls out of a paper `diaper', 3 little angel photo face magnets, a couple of vellum `candle wraps' that literally make photographs glow and four different scrapbook pages. Author, Sandy Redburn explains it was time to revise the books to tie in with their new line of stickers by artist Suzanne Carillo and to showcase more of the creative possibilities the books offer.

The beginning of the book explains how the right expressions can create warmth, personality and convey a special message. Then you get tips and ideas for hand lettering, tracing, photocopying, clipart techniques, and different ways to utilize the book with your computer to create scrapbook pages, cards, crafts and keepsakes. Scrapbooking has become the most popular way to use the books, because you can simply trace or copy any expression or design on vellum or paper and mat it to a scrapbook page or card.

The expressions are different in each book, but they are divided into a large variety of favorite themes and alphabetically tabbed in the top right corner for quick reference. Themes include Angels & Fairies, Babies, Blessings, Christmas, Country, Critters, Family, Fishing, Friendship, Funny Bones, Gardening, Golfing, Halloween, Hobbies, Home, Housework Stinks, Inspirations, Kitchen Quips, Love, Memory Lane, Over The Hill, Profound Proverbs, Sports, Summer Fun and Teddy Bears. You will find everything from heartfelt sentiments, mushy love stuff, inspirational quotes, to feel good sayings and funny quips.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a crafter's delight.......2003-10-15

Another great Heartwarming Expressions book. I have neglected my housework much to the dismay of my family because of these wonderful books.
They are ideal if you are stuck for ideas for a craft project. As soon as I pick these books up, I instantly start thinking of all the things I can make ... and magically I forget about my housework. :0)

A great series of books and I am so happy that I finally have them all, I wouldn't trade them for anything or to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A crafter's dream book........2001-07-24

It's always nice to be able to add a little personality to your crafts and this book will help you to do that. It's easy to adapt to your skill-level: you can trace, enlarge/copy, or freehand draw any of the designs presented to use on just about any type of craft that you can think of. Of course, the primary thought would be for scrapbooking, but inside the front cover, the author lists 99 places that you could potentially use these sayings and clipart. In fact, included are a few projects for flower pots and a cross-stitching guide for five alphabets. If you're motivated enough, you can enlarge some of the art and use them for paper-piecing in your scrapbooks. Some topics: babies, country, school, Christmas, pets, and fishing/golf...and there are many more!

4 out of 5 stars Just what I expected..........2006-01-12

Don't get me wrong, any help with the title department for my pages and my cards is appreciated. I was afraid that this book would be filled with "hokey" sayings. When I received this book yesterday, I looked through it and found just what I had expected. Yes, it's nice to have all of the sayings in one book. But they are mostly predictable or already heard of.
This could be because this is the first edition of this series. I will continue to collect these books because I do feel they are an asset.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!! So Many Ideas!.......2003-08-27

I bought this book for scrapbooking , the expressions are great!! I've gotten so many ideas for pages and also gotten ideas for other projects. I would reccomend this idea book if you need help with page ideas and journaling.

5 out of 5 stars An American Classic.......2007-05-22

Sure, this novel may not be up there with other Melville novels, but I really do like this novel. The final few pages are some of Melville's best writing. The parts showing the poverty in England are touching and tragic.

3 out of 5 stars A great story, worth reading.......2005-06-10

"If journals interest you, than by all means this is an excellent book" Heck yes, journals interest me- especially sea journals. Though this may not be a book for literary snobs, i enjoyed it very much. The story is supposed to be fiction, but I could easily believe Melville was describing scenes that he had personally witnessed. It must have been like writing his own journal, with keen insights into strange human quirks and scattered with observations about social issues like poverty and immigration. Not every book has to be a masterpiece to be worth reading! I just finished reading Billy Budd, and it was heavy going compared to the simpler language of Redburn.

5 out of 5 stars A deep look at Melville's heart.......2001-07-11

There are those who read Moby-Dick and say they love it because they're supposed to, because it's marked as a classic American novel; and then there are those who love Moby-Dick because its miraculous prose, its Shakespearean characters and its spirit truly get inside them. Redburn is for the second group: any real fan of Melville's unique philosophy and thorough mastery of style will love this book. Redburn is, to be sure, no Moby-Dick -- it has none of the epic quality of that crowning jewel. But all of Melville's trademarks are here, in a plot which transcends its simple outline -- a boy from a formerly rich, now bankrupt family joins the crew of a merchant ship sailing to Liverpool and comes of age -- to reach the realm of genius. The poetically beautiful imagery and sparkling wit juxtaposed with profound melancholy jump out at the reader. But even more importantly, Redburn opens up a unique window on Herman Melville's soul. Elizabeth Hardwick, in her recent biography of Melville (which I also highly recommend), calls this his most personal work, and she's right -- where later works like Moby-Dick and Billy Budd hid Melville's real experiences behind an obscuring (if brilliant) curtain of fiction and the earliest novels like Typee and Omoo lacked depth in their rollickingly faithful accounts of Melville's sojourns among the Polynesians, Redburn has just the right balance of fact and fiction. It is in many ways a meditation on the author's once-illustrious father -- Allan Melville, who, just like Walter Redburn (the narrator's father) lost all his money and respect -- but it is equally a series of revelations about his youthful mind as he mulls over issues of time, the generational gap and social change. Read Redburn for a real glimpse of the man who would be the greatest American novelist.

1 out of 5 stars A Literary HORROR.......2000-09-03

Let's get real here folks. This book is a literary disaster. Does the reviewer above want to argue that with me? Well, than he or she can talk to Melville himself. Melville wrote this book for money. It doesn't have the literary charm that comes with Melville's books. Moby Dick was a literary masterpiece. Redburn is garbage. It is simply a journal of his travels to Liverpool and back. If journals interest you, than by all means this is an excellent book. But this book was not written by Melville, rather by his quest for money while he was in poverty. I would give it negative stars, but Amazon.com doesn't give that as an option.

5 out of 5 stars His First Voyage.......2000-08-14

"Redburn" is a fantastic story. It is complex, funny and mysterious. Using Wellingborough Redburn as his persona and narrator, Melville writes of his first voyage overseas, when as a young man of 19 he signs on as a common seaman on board the "Highlander", a merchant ship bount for Liverpool, England. In the first few chapters Redburn seems to be mocking himself, using a tongue-in-cheek tone as he describes his romantic notions of sailing to distant lands and his ineptitude as a sailor during his first weeks at sea. The crew mocks him because he is such a poor seaman; they humiliate and tease him. As the story evolves, Redburn becomes more objective and contemplative. He becomes an acute observer in recording the harshness of a sailor's life and in describing the individual characteristics of the Highlander's crew, especially one Jackson, a malignant and powerful sailor who dominates the crew with his relentless venom.

In Liverpool, Redburn meets Harry Bolton, a young man who attracts and fascinates him. Harry is obviously a gentleman, and although he is muscular and well built, he exudes a feminine charm. Harry is evasive about his past. Harry intrigues Redburn. Redburn admires Harry although he suspects him of an indefinable evil. Despite his misgivings about Harry, Redburn helps him get a job on the Highlander which, with 500 immigrants who board the ship in Liverpool embarks for America. Melville, through his alter ego, Redburn, tells of the harrowing problems on board the Highlander on the voyage back to America. He describes his strange, ongoing friendship with Harry who proves to be a terrible sailor. And he describes in penetrating detail the awful, slow death of Jackson and its effect on the crew.

Some Melville aficionados have implied that Melville reveals homosexual longings in describing Harry Bolton and his attraction to him. But I feel that Melville, like the poet he is, transcends gender when he focuses on the sensuous nature of form, whether ugly or beautiful. "Redburn" is an exalting story of a young man's first voyage. It involves the reader both physically and spiritually.

5 out of 5 stars 500 Heartwarming Expressions.......2001-04-16

This book was only the beginning to a wonderful "Heartwarming Expressions" series! As an avid scrapbooker I am always in need of a quick, catchy title or saying for a page. This book is so easy to use with the themes grouped together that I don't have to spend much time "thinking" about it! Not to mention the many lettering ideas and adorable images that you can either recreate yourself or photocopy to make things even easier! Great addition to your Scrapbook, Idea book Library!! What more can I say?!

5 out of 5 stars This is the best book........2001-03-09

I really liked this book, because I am just starting out doing scrapbooking and I need all the help I can get, and this book has just the inspiration I needed to get started. I find my self stumped on what to say on some pages and on others just what border would go on some pages or what lettering to use. And your book has lots of great ideas and been a wonderful help to me.

Book Description

"Moby-Dick," Melville's masterpiece, is one of the great epics in all of literature. Ahab's idolatrous hunt for the white whale drives the narrative at a relentless pace, while Ishmael's meditations on whales and whaling, the sublime indifference of nature, and the grimy physical details of whale-oil extraction provide a reflective counterpoint. Sometimes read as a terrifying study of monomania or as a critical inquiry into the sinister effects of reducing life to symbols, "Moby-Dick" also offers colorful and comic glimpses of life aboard a whaling ship. This second volume of Melville's complete prose in The Library of America also includes two other stories of the sea: "Redburn," which relates a young man's initiation into the sailor's life, and "White-Jacket," a semi-autobiographical account of experiences in the U.S. Navy. All three are presented in the authoritative Northwestern-Newberry texts.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Moby-Dick, as my father once said, is one of the greatest novels ever written.......2006-11-16

Melville is one of the greatest American authors ever, and Moby-Dick alone is worth the price for this book. When I read the book myself in american literature, I was amazed at the extensive detail taken into the culture of whaling, a culture that was in its twilight days; it also gave us more information about whales that some think is too much, but whatever. Even though I didn't completely understand the book (but so did everything I read in high school), I have the desire to read it again.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Presages of Moby-Dick.......2000-02-18

While White-Jacket seems to have little overall relation to Melville's other works in the sense that it appears as a self-contained, highly enjoyable novel, Redburn is one of those central turning points in this great writer's life that makes it extraordinarily important. Forget "adventure" or "romance." This is a novel of psychological destruction, a disasterous novel of "growing up" that displays the shattering of a young mind and the destruction of "young America." Any reader who loves Moby-Dick should devour Redburn again and again as one of Melville's most important works.

3 out of 5 stars The content was very exciting........1997-10-01

Complicated to absorb into your mind as you read along, due to the expert writing of this this material. I had to reread just about everything at least 5 times for it to make any sense at all. I'm in the 9th grade. Daniel Barclay-son of Paul

    Book Description

The homeless have become more and more numerous and visible in our society. Responding to America's Homeless presents the most complete, up-to-date scientific evidence concerning the nature, extent, and causes of homelessness. Using an unprecedented survey of 1,000 homeless individuals and families, as well as previous national, local, and scholarly research, the authors draw a vivid portrait of the homeless population and their needs. They challenge the widely held view that most homeless are mentally ill, proposing an original classification of the homeless based on needs for various forms of assistance. On the basis of this empirical research, the authors evaluate current public policies for dealing with the homeless and present alternative plans aimed at returning homeless people to more normal, secure circumstances.

Yes, I will go to sea; cut my kind uncles and aunts, and sympathizing patrons, and leave no heavy hearts but those in my own home, and take none along but the one which aches in my bosom. Cold, bitter cold as December, and bleak as its blasts, seemed the world then to me; there is no misanthrope like a boy disappointed; and such was I, with the warmth of me flogged out by adversity. But these thoughts are bitter enough even now, for they have not yet gone quite away; and they must be uncongenial enough to the reader; so no more of that, and let me go on with my story.

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to Melville.......2005-07-08

Redburn refers to the main character of the novel Wellingborough Redburn, a young lad from New York who embarks on his first voyage to England as a member of the sailing crew. It is the story of lost innocence, breaking away from the comforts of home and country to experience life on one's own. Melville captures poetically, Redburn's journey, observations, feelings, and dark reality of life in pre-civil war America and England. If you have never read Melville before, this is a page turning introduction to a very much admired author. His style of writing is poetic, and clever and his narrative captures the feelings and thoughts of the time. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Melville, Like Me.......1999-12-03

I'm one of those people who have read MOBY DICK a few times, so I may be biased towards Herman Melville, but I found REDBURN an excellent read.

Though it is an argueable point; many believe that REDBURN is based on Melville's first voyage. This may not be interesting to you if you are an adherent of NEW CRITICISM, but for any Melville fan or scholar this book sheds some light on Melville's persona.

I noticed some elements of REDBURN that would later surface in MOBY DICK and PIERRE -- as more developed themes. This book starts out as pretty straight forward adventure narrative, but leave it to Herman, by the middle of the book he goes off into his preaching, sermonizing, and editorializing . . . but I like that about Melville.

This might sound strange coming from a Melvillian 'scholar,' but Herman Mellville was not a good writer . . . he is an interesting author though, but he makes mistakes, and he often takes his stories through such long and twisted circumloctions that it is no wonder that many modern readers are turned off by him. However, if you love Melville despite his flaws then you will love REDBURN, because it shows the progress that Melville was making towards THE GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL, MOBY-DICK.

Herman Melville did not much care for REDBURN when he wrote it. He wrote it quickly and for the money, and then he tried to distance himself from it. He felt MARDI, the novel he wrote just before REDBURN, was the better, but it was panned. On the other hand, REDBURN recieved good reiviews in its day much to Melville's suprise . . . I learned all this in the afterword of the Northwest-Newberry Edition. The detailed history of REDBURN included in that edition is pretty interesting reading in itself if you are a Mevillian, like me.

    I apologize for any typos . . . but no spell-check.
