Book Description
The third and final volume of the Catalogue Raissonne of the oil paintings of Alexej von Jawlensky contains 807 works including addenda to the first two volumes, with virtually every work illustrated in colour. The culmination of this period, and of Jawlensky's entire oeuvre, is the series of "Meditations," intense, small-format works in which the rigour of the "Abstract Heads" is taken to the furthest extreme, but is suffused with even greater radiance. This catalogue is preceded by a general evalutaion of the artist and an essay on the "Meditations" by Angelica Jawlensky, plus a list of works confiscated by the Nazis, and selected correspondance between Jawlensky and his representative in the USA Galka Scheyer. The volume concludes with complete and updated exhibition lists, a general index and an index to locations and provenance covering all three volumes.
Book Description
THREE COMRADES
The year is 1928. On the outskirts of a large German city, three young men are earning a thin and precarious living. Fully armed young storm troopers swagger in the streets. Restlessness, poverty, and violence are everywhere. For these three, friendship is the only refuge from the chaos around them. Then the youngest of them falls in love, and brings into the group a young woman who will become a comrade as well, as they are all tested in ways they can never have imagined. . . .
Written with the same overwhelming simplicity and directness that made All Quiet on the Western Front a classic, Three Comrades portrays the greatness of the human spirit, manifested through characters who must find the inner resources to live in a world they did not make, but must endure.

Here's A Remarque You Won't Soon Forget.......2007-04-11
Does anyone even remember this brilliant author anymore? What a shame, that the average American is made inescapably and constantly aware of the Paris Hiltons of the world while remaining completely unaware of this man and his literary genius.
This novel will touch you in some way, provided you have even a trace of the Milk of Human Kindness running through your veins. It is a story of the small troubles and small triumphs of insignificant men, at least as the world counts Significance. It is the story of men who no longer understand the world they live in, resorting instead to an unspoken Code of loyalty to one another, as Comrades ought to do. At the very least it will remind you of what integrity and quiet self-sacrifice are really all about. This one is abundantly worth your time.
three comrades.......2005-06-06
I don't think anyone can fully define what a great book the three comrades is. No one can describe the love between Pat and Robert throughoutly. I truly believe this is the most romantic book of all time. We live in a very changed world now, where there is little time and place for emotion but if there are any romantics left, this book should be your best friend. I hope that sometime in the future this book can be taught in school instead of the usuall boring rubbish people have to endure. If anyone is interested in reading a book about friendship, love and most of all hardships of life, then this book is the one for you
a joy to read, and totally underrated.......2005-03-14
My colleagues who have reviewed Remarque favorably on these sites are totally correct: he is a remarkable writer who still resonates with contemporary readers in a manner that more esteemed German writers such as Mann and Goethe fail to. A cross between Hemingway, Faulkner, and Fitzgerald, I have seldom spent more rewarding time reading. The combination of humor, philosophy, brilliant dialogue, unusual and touching romantic experience, war-weary and world weary articulations, social commentary, and perfect word craftsmenship (thanks to excellent translations of course), make him stand out among all European writers in my mind--but then again, I'm a more Modernist enthusiast. So far I love all of the novels I've read, but I tend to lean slightly towards The Black Obelisk with its absolutely profound and heart-rending romantic dilemma. I teach All Quiet at the university level, but I'm working on teaching A Time to LOve..., 3 Comrades, etc. BUT...can anybody tell me how in the freakin' world these books are out of print and how to do something about it?! It's a freakin' sacriledge!
Excellent.......2004-06-16
I can't remember the last time I read a book that left me with tears running down my face. This one did. The last sentence echoed in my head for days after I got done reading. Maybe not the best book of all time, but beautifully written and very touching.
Brilliant - A True Classic.......2004-02-05
This is a book of three veterans of World War I trying to continue life in Germany after the war. They are like the Three Musketeers - all for one and one for all. When the narrator character falls in love, the girlfriend becomes the D'artagnon.
The characters think they have seen all that can be seen of death and are immune from any feeling relating to it. They learn otherwise as the girlfriend has a terminal injury and there is another death close to them.
Remarque is a terrific writer. He captures so well the characters and the times in which they live. The characters - both main three-four and the supporting cast jump out of the pages at the reader. (He reminds me of a German Steinbeck in the way he able to portray characters.) As the three friends plod on fighting to live well and happily in a depressed economy and a depressing time, one finds himself rooting them on.
Somehow, Remarque makes the reader have complete empathy with characters - even though we are now eighty plus years away from when they lived. Only one of the best writers of the last century could accomplish such a feat.
I rate this above Night in Lisbon and as good, if not better, than All Quiet on the WEstern Front

Thank you so very much!.......2006-02-17
When I began looking for advice on training my son, I purchased a book that stated I could do it in one day. After reading this book, I decided that, although the theory behind the book was somewhat acceptable, some of the apparent mind sets were contrary to the way that my husband and I decided to raise our child. I have never been ashamed of my child because he was in diapers- he is two and half! I do not have multiple children, but this book helped me realize that my instincts (sp) are correct for my son. We chose this caring and loving method for helping our son. This experience was not filled with anxiety or fear for either of us! Thank you again!
Terrific book from another mom of triplets plus newborn.......2006-01-27
Maria's advice is fantastic and to the point. As a mother of triplets (just 2 years old) and a newborn, facing potty training is scary. Maria's book showed me it is possible and gave me choices as to how I might approach it. I loved the schedule of her day at the end of the book. It seemed so similar to my own day! I'm now feeling up to the challenge thanks to simple, no nonsense advice.
I also have Maria's book about 101 Indoor Activities for Toddlers and Preschoolers. We are going to be making the Purple People Eater soon!
Maria, Thanks for taking the time to document things that worked for you!
Triple stars from this triplet mom!.......2005-09-05
This book is awesome! It's very easy to read, easy to follow, etc. Has great, practical tips to talk you thru the whole nightmare of potty training multiples. It helped me see that potty training is a relaxed process and not something I needed to stress over. I have 2 done and one more to go... thanks to the author!
Product review.......2005-01-04
This book is terrific. It's full of practical and creative ways to deal with potty training. I had a difficult experience with my first child - I wish this guide was available then.

Book Description
Sculptor Charles Cordier (1827-1905) captured attention worldwide when he exhibited a bust of a Sudanese man at the Paris Salon in 1848, the very year slavery was abolished in the French colonies. From 1851 to 1866 he served as the official sculptor of Paris's National History Museum, creating a series of spectacularly lifelike busts for their new ethnographic gallery (now housed in the Musee de l'Homme, Paris).
The Musee d'Orsay in Paris has organized an unprecedented exhibition of Cordier's work, highlighting seventy-five sculptures and almost forty ethnographic photographs. Filled with several texts on his life and work compiled by the exhibition's organizers, this book serves as the official exhibition catalogue but also includes a catalogue raisonne of six hundred of Cordier's works, of which four hundred are reproduced.

Women's Fiction Reviews.......2006-05-28
Dreams of Anubis
From the age of five, Mary Fallon, was drawn to the spiritual and mysterious land of Egypt. So when her life-long friend Caroline Jordan invites her to visit Cario, it is an offer she can't refuse. She meets Caroline's boss, gorgeous Egyptologist Simon Taylor, and her life suddenly takes a new direction. However, in her dreams she is seduced by another man. An enigmatic Priest of Anubis. Mary then meets Sir Richard Ashley, who is not only sexy, but rich, and is surprised by her intuitive sense that she trusts him so easily. It's as if they have already met in some past life...
Rituals of Surrender
Hit by a falling oak tree in a middle of a storm, Maia Wilson's road to recovery is dominated by three very different men who have a mysterious hold over her. Drew Landson, Christopher Thorn, and Eric Wolfson are modern Druids each after her affections and her soul. Through their sexual teachings and ancients rites, Maia uncovers a hidden world full of erotic experiences and shocking family secrets. It is time to make a choice, but which one will be right? Flickering through Maia's past and present this is a bewitching, enticing story.
Cat's Collar
The day Mira Rosemond's cat leads a tall, handsome, Philip to her house she is overcome by this stranger's ability to control her in a way never experienced before, and she likes it. When they meet again he divulges he works as a Master and is paid to dominate women. Mira does not, at first, know how to react. As their relationship evolves Philip takes Mira under his wing and teaches her not to be anxious about trying out new sexual experiences. Feeling both afraid and excited, she allows herself to become his slave and falls compliantly head over heels in love. But can a man of such talent feel the same about her?
Maria Isabel Pita has written three powerful self-contained erotic stories which really dig deep into her characters views and passions. The BDSM scenes provide sufficient explicit, sexual tension to drive the plot forward, whilst remaining sensual and not offensive. For example, in "Cat's Collar" Mira and Philip build on their erotic experiments of dominance and submission based on a loving relationship you can easily imagine happening between two consenting adults. It also reads like a modern day fairytale, an ingenious slant.
Filled with descriptive settings, and coupled with imaginative prose, as in all her books, readers of erotica will find themselves wrapped up in the needs and desires of Ms Pita's convincing characters until the very end. Another top quality, erotic read from the Mistress of Erotica!
Review from The Romance Studio.......2006-03-21
Women have many fantasies, linked by common themes, and these three wonderfully erotic tales seem to have captured them all.
In "Dreams of Anubis", you will, like Mary Fallon, quickly slip away from the humdrum of the office to travel back and forth between modern Egypt and the old Kingdoms, seeking only new knowledge and your true love. You feel the sand slipping between your toes and the hot wind on your face as you make your way to the mysteries of Imhotep, filled by the pleasures of incredible sexual dreams and hot sex. Do you do as Simon says or as his nemesis, Sir Richard Ashley, desires?
In "Rituals of Surrender", you join Maia Wilson, struck by lightening near an ancient oak in a Druid forest, lingering between different worlds. Caught like a fly in a carefully planned web of intrigue and magic, you need to choose your lover. Will you stay with Chris and his incredible tree house or be pulled into the comfort of Drew Landson's black leather jacket. What will your mother say?
In "Cat's Collar", with the flick of a whip, you find yourself, like Mira Rosemond, wanting to please your Master, Phillip, as he introduces you to new pleasures in his secret bondage "playroom" by his wine cellar. See what the cat brought home!
If you have not read Maria Isabel Pita before, you will be amazed by her wit, her incredible knowledge, both arcane and sensual, and her exquisite attention to detail. If you are a fan of hers already, you will continue to appreciate the artistry of her work and your only disappointment will be when the stories end and you have to move back into your own skin. Like Mira, pour yourself a nice glass of wine in a crystal glass and savor the experience and say, "Oh, yes... Master!"

Just Erotic Romance Reviews - Gold Star Award.......2006-03-13
Dreams of Anubis
Dreams of Anubis is an amalgam of true romance and erotic fiction where Mary realizes her true sensuality, spirituality and metaphysical being through her one true love. This is a compellingly erotic tale unveiled in one of the world's most romantic and mystical lands. Maria Isabel Pita knows how to give her readers the most vivid imagery, subtlty of words and well developed characters that come alive from the pages of her book. Mary's sexual encounters with the sexy and mysterious Englishman, Sir Richard Ashley, will have you reaching for an ice pack or your significant other. Mary and Richard are kindred souls rediscovering each other; their love has stood the test of time.
There is a charm and lushness to this book that evokes many feelings. Ms. Pita paints a rich tapestry of words that light up the imagination and that brings her characters to life. All of them, from Mary, Richard, Simon, Carol, Steve, to even the servants, are given a breath of fresh air and simply come alive before your eyes. In Dreams Of Anubis, Ms. Pita brings together both a sensually historic plot and a contemporary Egypt that arouses the readers senses while also offering a very satisfying read and a thoroughly intriguing, beautifully sensual erotic work.
This book deserves a Gold Star for many reasons. Maria Isabel Pita has an elegant style of writing that pulls at your senses and allows you to live the moment through her characters. The language flows beautifully, the characters are well drawn, the plot is exciting and is always fresh and riveting, and the setting is romantic. I highly recommend Dreams of Anubis for anyone with a love of erotic romance with a touch of magic and mysticism. It is a true keeper.
Rituals of Surrender
Maia Wilson has lived near a group of standing stones all her life, and has felt their mystical power pull at her emotions for as long as she can remember. One night she's involved in a car accident from a collapsed tree hit by lightening. She suddenly finds herself entangled in the heart of an erotic web with three sexy and mysterious men intent on using her in their ancient rite. Drew Landson, Christopher Thorn and Sir Eric Wolfson; three modern-day Druids who weave a sensual spell on Maia. Do these men have ulterior motives or is there interest in Maia genuine?
Rituals of Surrender is an evocative and thought-provokingly sensual story that calls to your senses. The eroticism and imagery used in this book takes you to another dimension along with Maia and her devilishly sexy leading men. I found the symbolism throughout the book a delightful challenge, and found this extremely stylish writing that tied in different aspect of the story which at first seemed inconsequential. The three men who touch Maia's life, Drew Landson, Christopher Thorn, and Sir Eric Wolfson, are vastly different men on the surface. Yet each is able to captivate Maia's sexual curiosity in their own particular way and encourage her to fulfill her sexual potential. Each character seems like an amalgam of the beliefs held by the modern-day Druid. The importance of this practice, the significance of certain events along with the spiritual and mystical context, and the eroticism throughout make it a hauntingly remarkable story.
The most fascinating aspect is the two parallel stories being told after Maia is involved in the car accident. One takes place in the here and now, while the other unfolds in another realm. We have to discern for ourselves which is real and which takes place in the parallel world Maia finds herself in. These paranormal elements only enhance and add mystery to this story which has so much emotion and detail woven in. Your perceptions are challenged just as Maia is, and this aspect of Rituals of Surrender only makes it that much more meaningful and significant as you take this journey with Maia.
The characters' personalities are subtly expressed, coming alive at the touch of your hand. The main male characters are in turn mysterious, sexual, and all play a role in Maia's realization of her sexuality and her own powers as a woman. Ultimately only one man will hold the key to her heart and unraveling this mystery is what makes reading this book so thoroughly enjoyable. The sexual tension is high octane, with many sexual encounters being scorching but also having a romantic feel to them. This proves that each encounter experienced by Maia is significant in helping her discover her full potential. Ms. Pita's writing always manages to encourage the reader to visualize her highly erotic tales, which are underscored with loving relationships. They draw the reader into another world with her imagery, symbolism and evocative words.
When reading one of Ms. Pita's books, like Rituals of Surrender, you're gifted with high caliber erotic stories, sensual and lyrical writing, and imagery that is also literary art. Her intelligent and sensual stories reach beneath the surface of the reader's psyche and touch them long after they've finished reading. Rituals of Surrender proves to be a fulfilling and thought provoking book on many levels, which is why I consider this deserves a Gold Star Award.
Cat's Collar
Mira Rosemond is an interior designer who finds an enigmatic and handsome stranger taking a short cut through her garden one morning. Unaccountably drawn to Phillip, Mira finds her life is forever changed. He's the antithesis of every man she's ever dated and he's also one of the most charismatic, calling to her soul and her every desire. When Phillip introduces Mira to the world of bondage she finds herself falling helplessly and submissively in love with this masterful man.
Ms. Pita hasn't simply written an erotic romance book. She has filled the pages with passion and has blended together elements of romance, eroticism and a symphony of words that meld together to make this story come alive. What notes are to music Ms. Pita's words create a medley of pictures to bring together a whole cohesive and rapturous story of a woman finding her soul mate and coming to terms with her sexual nature. Master Phillip, while initially portrayed as a mysterious and sexy stranger, proves through his actions and words that he's Mira's other half, her soul mate. Their story is truly amazingly sensual as Mira learns to accept her nature and trust Phillip, in the process empowering herself, but also nurturing the love between her and Phillip. Mira finally realizes that she's found devotion, satisfaction, and love, everything that has been missing from her previous relationships. The world of B&D Phillip introduces Mira to is entirely a new experience and leaves her open to many possibilities, with the advantage the reader is also given a look into this fascinating lifestyle.
Seeing their devotion to one another is uplifting. Reading the nuances and subtleties of their relationship as it unfolds in each successive chapter (which is prefaced with a quote to mark a new development) is very smart in its arrangement. I've found Ms. Pita to be a formidable talent, a truly gifted author whose imagery and prose fills me with awe with each book I am lucky enough to read. Her books are addictive and totally engrossing, showing the devotion and loving aspects of a dominant/submissive relationship between two people who respect each other and empower each other, like Maia and Phillip.
The sexual tension, and the growing devotion, between Mira and Phillip is enough to get you in the mood for your own loving; their interactions are described both erotically and romantically. With fleshed out characters who are complex, appealing and interesting, this only serves to imprint the story on your mind. The plot is ever surprising and arousing, and I found I couldn't put down this book.
Some profound exchanges from these characters will have you asking questions and lead to interesting debate. I found their open-mindedness truly amazing and thought-provoking. Ms. Pita's knowledge of history and other cultures shines through, and especially interesting obscure facts that make this a joy to read. Ms. Pita deserves praise for her gifted writing in bringing to the mainstream the complex, yet simple choreography, of the loving relationship to be had in a master/slave relationship in a positive light. Whether you're a fan of bondage and dominance stories or would like to try something new, I would highly recommend this priceless book. It is truly amazing and will have you desiring if not for your own Master, then a man with some of Phillip's attributes. This is definitely a book worth lingering over, savoring all that it has to offer with its subtle yet arousing storyline that is unforgettable, which is why I believe it deserves a Gold Star Award. Cat's Collar is a definite keeper.

Cupid's Library Review.......2006-03-04
DREAMS OF ANUBIS, RITUALS OF SURRENDER, and CAT'S COLLAR should be classified as cerebral erotica. None of them are 'fluff' or 'light fiction', but rather they force the reader to be actively thinking while reading these novellas to grasp their high concepts and written complexities. Once you enter into Ms. Pita's world it is a challenge to fully understand what she is writing. I feel this challenge is well worth the time and effort because once you finish each segment and all the different aspects and scenes of the stories solidify into one truly intriguing message you have many 'aha' moments. You also feel truly satisfied with the journeys you read through and in many ways were a part of. All three stories share a commonality in which each heroine is torn between difficult choices she has to make. The first two stories the heroines have metaphysical paths that they must traverse that leads them down the path to happiness and their soul mates. These stories do an excellent job of integrating faith, trust, and what is real versus the surreal. The third story is more of a contemporary erotic romance detailing the course the heroine must choose to be with the man she loves and understand the Master/slave roles they live. The first two stories definitely force you to think about the varying levels of thought and beliefs Ms. Pita presents for her heroines. The third also brings up the trust and beliefs of the heroine, especially with the hero but the wording is less symbolic and her progress is in the 'here and now'. Each story has many erotic scenes that are so enmeshed with the plot that in and of themselves do not make these stories erotic. It is the context, imagery, and choice to trust and believe that makes these stories erotic -- to give up the tangible and trust body and soul to another is what defines the erotic in this book.
DREAMS OF ANUBIS is a deeply mystical and spiritual journey. Mary knows deep within herself that there is something drawing her to Egypt. Once there her world is turned upside down. Because of the many choices she makes, not only is Mary taken down innumerable roads, but so is the reader. I found myself going down one path with Mary and then suddenly going down another in a heartbeat. The two men pulling her to them do not make the choice easy for Mary -- nor is the reader able to immediately choose which man is right for her. The historical vignettes help to direct her to the 'right' man... This story is quite rich in detail and passion - passion not only of the erotic kind but a deeper passion about love of history, experience, and the finding of the single soul mate through each lifetime. As with all of Ms. Pita's writing, there is a serious use of imagery to drive the emotion and setting of this story. Nothing is straightforward or simple because as Mary makes her choice, she directs the reader and we have to follow her down her path of questions and desires... The path Mary takes is not easily deciphered, yet in the end what she ultimately chooses is right and, in retrospect, it was really the only choice she could make to find her soul.
RITUALS OF SURRENDER is a truly evocative read. The imagery, foreshadowing, and eroticism are at times hard to follow and the story takes you everywhere so that you have to extrapolate what some things mean. The symbolism throughout the book creeps up quite often and tries to tie in aspects of the story you may feel are inconsequential. This is not frippery as it encourages the reader to lead, visualize, and eventually understand what Ms. Pita is expressing... The importance of Druid beliefs and practice, why these three men had to corral and influence Maia, the significance of oak trees, and the power and perception of various art forms all come together in a cohesive story that has erotic, spiritual, and mystical context throughout it. This is a very heady erotic romance that will definitely take you on a journey along with the main character. With multiple reads I feel new concepts and connections will be made making this story even more fulfilling and thought provoking.
CAT'S COLLAR is a very good story about the initiation of one very modern, very independent woman who finds love and her fulfillment by being a man's slave. This story shows Mira and Philip's step by step relationship and shows that a slave/Master relationship can be about love and cherishing the other. Philip is exacting in his role and never shows signs of changing what he wants from Mira. He guides her down a path he is certain she will love and enjoy. What is interesting about this story is that Mira's lessons begin as an introspective study, yet as the story progresses Mira begins to accept and take hold of her role as slave in the relationship... This story is very erotic and centers on a Master/slave relationship that is very much a loving and gratifying relationship for both Mira and Philip. This seemed like an ideal relationship and truly the meeting of souls because they both make the other happy and are entirely loved while exploring their dominate/submissive sides.
An exceptional erotic romance for the senses..........2005-12-26
Cat's Collar:
Maria Isabel Pita has to be, hands down, one of America's top erotica writers today... What makes this novel great is what it isn't. That is, much of today's erotica has had to sell itself on extreme BDSM and violence against women that makes the ordinary person cringe. This author manages to take us on an erotic journey with Mira and Phillip as they explore each other both physically and mentally to discover that perhaps there is such a thing as a 'soul mate'. Not only the gentle side of love but also the hot sizzling sex scenes in the book are written with such skill that it's almost naughty for the reader to form a picture in the mind's eye. Take a glass of your favorite wine on a lazy afternoon and I'm sure that you'll not put it down untill either the book or the bottle of wine is finished...

Dreams of Anubis:
Mary Fallon, a legal secretary from Boston, gets the opportunity to visit the mystical and exotic land of the pharaoh's. Being able to view the Old Kingdom tomb paintings is a dream come true. Meeting Caroline's dream boss, Egyptologist Simon Taylor, is only a bonus. But nightly a powerfully erotic Priest of Anubis enters Mary's dreams. Then one night, in the heart of the Cairo bazaar, she meets the devastatingly sexy and wealthy Sir Richard Ashley who believes he's lived before and that he and Mary belong together. Torn between these two desirable men, Mary must decide her fate... will her head or her heart rule?
Dreams of Anubis is an amalgam of romance and erotic fiction where Mary realizes her true sensuality, spirituality and metaphysical being through her one true love. This is a compellingly erotic tale unveiled in one of the world's most romantic and mystical lands. Maria Isabel Pita knows how to give her readers the most vivid imagery, subtlty of words and well developed characters that come alive from the pages of her book. Mary and Richard are kindred souls rediscovering each other; their love has stood the test of time.
There is a charm and lushness to this book that evokes many feelings. Ms. Pita paints a rich tapestry of words that light up the imagination and brings her characters to life. All of them, from Mary, Richard, Simon, Carol, Steve, to even the servants, are given a breath of fresh air and simply come alive before your eyes. Ms. Pita brings together both a sensually historic plot and a contemporary Egypt that arouses the readers senses.

Two entirely disparate aspects of our present zeitgeist--the embrace of multicultural complexity in place of its former suppression, and the current elision of landscape design with "real" sculpture and art--might seem to be as adolescent as our own postmodern age. Both, however, were fully embodied in the work of the great Japanese-American Isamu Noguchi (1904-88), which as early as the 1930s was finding reconciliation in cultural rootlessness, and eroding the line between landscape and sculpture. Ana Maria Torres's handsome, erudite, and broad-ranging study of Noguchi's public works drives these two points home. Complete with a wealth of black-and-white photographs of both his completed works and models of his unrealized ones, the book prompts us to consider from new angles some of the unique accomplishments of this very enterprising artist who incorporated elements of ancient outdoor sites into exterior work that provided an uncannily fitting complement to the very midcentury-modern architecture that it was commissioned to accompany.
Here, more than 75 projects are presented and considered; they are divided into seven chapters (each of which focuses on a subsection of Noguchi's vast output, including playgrounds; "earthworks"; gardens, plazas, and parks; memorials; fountains; interiors; and public sculptures) and engrossingly narrated by Torres. Each chapter is kick-started by a Noguchi excerpt about the work in question. The thematic organization of the book means that we keep bouncing back to the 1930s just when we are familiarizing ourselves with the projects and artistic preoccupations of Noguchi's final decade. But that format also underscores how his style and ambitions evolved in a uniquely personal manner, even as they seem to reflect perfectly the spirit of their particular age.
The exciting work that is included here is almost too vast and varied to be summarized, although a small sampling of highlights might include Noguchi's gardens for the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, for which he convinced architects Marcel Breuer, Pier Luigi Nervi, and Bernard Zehrfuss to relocate a mobile of Alexander Calder in order for him to expand on his own ideas (needless to say that Calder was not pleased); the famous sunken garden for Yale University's Beinecke Library, with its three bold marble sculptures--of a pyramid, a ring, and a cube--and marble paving work that was inspired by that of Michelangelo's Piazza del Campidoglio, which Noguchi adored; the massive pylon water fountain and sprawling circular plaza that he designed for downtown Detroit from 1971-79, much to the delight of legendary mayor Coleman Young, who prompted him to design a subterranean amphitheater just beneath it for the city's annual Ethnical Festival; and, three years before his death, the garden of the Domon Ken Museum of Photography in Sakata, Japan: an enclosed court of water that runs over four stone terraces, with a single granite pillar rising up near the center--surely one of the most serenely beautiful vistas in modern architecture, even as reproduced here (as are all of the photos, somewhat unfortunately) in laconic black and white.
There is some less monumental work here that fascinates and delights, too, including the boldly biomorphic and drop-dead mod undulating ceilings that Noguchi designed for St. Louis's American Stove Company building (1948) and Rockefeller Center's Time-Life Building (1947, now shamefully destroyed), plus potentially terrific unrealized work, such as plans that he devised in the 1960s (with beloved collaborator Louis Kahn) for a playground for New York's Riverside Park.
There is one thing that this very satisfying retrospective makes clear about Noguchi: instead of letting the contradictions of his own ancestry undermine his work, he used them to his advantage in a way that--for all of the diverse global influences of his oeuvre--struck this reviewer as quite distinctly and resourcefully American. --Timothy Murphy
Customer Reviews:
Illuminating a visionary but in black-and-white.......2001-05-27
Noguchi is, unfortunately, not as well known by the public as the major artist that he was. This book does a good job of showing the relationship between conception and the final realization of his major public spaces and public sculptures (the intention of the book), but a full understanding of Noguchi requires seeing his other works, such as his furniture and stage designs. The major drawback of the book is that the illustrations are entirely in black and white. While Noguchi's works were primarily about shape and their relationships and distribution through space, it would have been nice to see the photographs of the finished spaces and sculptures in color to get a better sense of their ambience. This book is appropriate for sculptors, environmental artists, architects, larger public libraries, and libraries in academic institutions with art programs that include instructors open to a broad range of ideas inart....
