Book Description

me gusta mucho.......2007-08-14
If you can read Spanish, read this book.......2007-06-25
I've been fascinated with Carlos Ruiz Zafon ever since I read The Shadow of the Wind two years ago. I would have gone into a shameless author binge sooner, but his previous novels have either not been translated to English or I have had not luck finding them in English. After enduring the sight of this book and three others by him, targeted at the young adult market, I finally broke down and decided to put my skills in Spanish to the ultimate test of reading an entire book. (I'm a native Portuguese speaker who's never learned Spanish properly, but reading comes with little effort.)
It was well worth the minor struggle of reading this wonderful story in its original language. Zafon's writing is, of course, much less mature and polished than in TSOTW, but it still shines bright. The story isn't complex, but the main character is vivid. I imagine that this book would find a lot of interest among 12 year olds with a taste for suspense and bewilderment.

Just a book for children.......2007-01-18
It is a good for children, big fantasy, nothing real
Book Description
Develop New Insight into the Behavior of Adaptive Systems This one-of-a-kind interactive book and CD-ROM will help you develop a better understanding of the behavior of adaptive systems. Developed as part of a project aimed at innovating the teaching of adaptive systems in science and engineering, it unifies the concepts of neural networks and adaptive filters into a common framework. It begins by explaining the fundamentals of adaptive linear regression and builds on these concepts to explore pattern classification, function approximation, feature extraction, and time-series modeling/prediction. The text is integrated with the industry standard neural network/adaptive system simulator NeuroSolutions. This allows the authors to demonstrate and reinforce key concepts using over 200 interactive examples. Each of these examples is 'live,' allowing the user to change parameters and experiment first-hand with real-world adaptive systems. This creates a powerful environment for learning through both visualization and experimentation. Key Features of the Text
* The text and CD combine to become an interactive learning tool.
* Emphasis is on understanding the behavior of adaptive systems rather than mathematical derivations.
* Each key concept is followed by an interactive example.
* Over 200 fully functional simulations of adaptive systems are included.
* The text and CD offer a unified view of neural networks, adaptive filters, pattern recognition, and support vector machines.
* Hyperlinks allow instant access to keyword definitions, bibliographic references, equations, and advanced discussions of concepts.
The CD-ROM Contains:
* A complete, electronic version of the text in hypertext format
* NeuroSolutions, an industry standard, icon-based neural network/adaptive system simulator
* A tutorial on how to use NeuroSolutions
* Additional data files to use with the simulator
"An innovative approach to describing neurocomputing and adaptive learning systems from a perspective which unifies classical linear adaptive systems approaches with the modern advances in neural networks. It is rich in examples and practical insight." -James Zeidler, University of California, San Diego
Customer Reviews:
Excelente Libro.......2007-06-03
Mindstorms meets NN; same strengths and weaknesses.......2005-09-02
I am quite conflicted in my thoughts on this book. The pluses are that it is comprehensive, thorough and comes with a useful pedagogical simulator. The minuses are that it is covers a vast range of subjects with a skimpy coat of mathematical and theoretical glue. When I found myself looking for more maths and theory, the text usually directed me towards the simulation. The simulations are good but the coding is invisible to the user due the range of NN widgets included (analogous to programming using the Lego Mindstorms visual programing tool). This is a downside for those hoping to learning coding techniques - there are not explored here - but will suit users that want a workbench to visualise concepts in the text. I confess that I became bored with the simulator about midway through the book.
The authors set themselves a formidable task in producing this book, and depending on the reader's needs thaey have either excelled themselves, or else have concocted a animaed dodo - interesting but near extinction.
Okay book, not worth the price........2004-02-26
The book covers the topics fairly well. Unfortunately, you won't ever use this book outside of a classroom. It seems like every page either has an illustration, or a box saying "run simulation 5.17 fom the CD, and here are 3 graphs from that simulation", or "Use the Excel plugin on the data from the CD". I suppose that is useful to those who can't follow the math. I believe it is also what causes the excessive cost of the book.
DON'T buy the book if you are looking for ways to include neural networks or machine learning into your existing applications. The book gives you formulas, and a workbench program that (once you figure it out) lets you customize it's own built-in formulas with its own data sets. It is not significantly useful when wanting to write your own adaptive system, nor does it have any significant code samples to learn from. You get the formulas and illustrations, figuring out how to apply them is up to you.
Very Helpful and Practical.......2001-09-23
Topics explored in this book include signal processing, feature extraction, linear and non-linear modelling, temporal models and an array of connectionist learning paradigms. These topics are demanding, particularly mathematically, however I have taken a lot from this book where I have had limited success with others. The authors know a great deal about their subject, which has enabled them to take a holistic approach, which explains fundamentals before building them into powerful solutions. Equations, while frequently cited are explained descriptively and often boxed separately from the main text. Learning is greatly enhanced by the 200 interactive tutorials. The NeuroSolutions software (limited version free) is the best I've seen in terms of the number of architectures and data processing algorithms provided and comes with an excel add in! I searched Amazon long and hard for this book and was not disappointed - it sets a new standard for technical education.
The best book for adaptive signal processing.......2000-03-30
This is the best book to learn adaptive signal processing. The authors teach you the spirit of adaptation thorugh simulation played by yourself. Moreover, readers can build their own system using the NeuralSolution. No matter you are a student or an engineer, this book is very useful.

This intellectual biography of the 16th century Italian quotes exclusively from Machiavelli's own words rather than quoting others who commented upon him. In this way de Grazia, a professor at Rutgers, paints a colorful portrait of the man entirely in the context of his time. In The Prince Machiavelli had famously examined the dilemma of the ruler who must find a resolution between political necessity and ethical behavior. By thus inventing 'realpolitik' Machiavelli entered the language of political discourse, and got himself rather a bad name. De Grazia's book, which won a Pulitzer Prize, goes some way to rehabilitating him, suggesting that his immoral means were put to good political ends.
Customer Reviews:
Intellectually stimulating and thought provoking.......2005-02-23
To those of you looking for an easy read on Machiavelli, I recommend going somewhere else. This book isn't going to skimp on the scholarly side just to make it easier to read for others. This is an intelligent book for an intelligent reader. Grazia intricately weaves together the mindset of Machiavelli as we see him through his many works and letters to friends.
At first I was a little disappointed, perhaps because I was looking more for the momentous doings of Machiavelli. Yet, as I worked through the sheer volume of this biography (not by number of pages, yet rather by the number of words per page) I began to grow and respect Grazia as I slowly began to realize who Machiavelli was and how his thoughts and ideas influenced so many. His thoughts are his astounding accomplishments and those we certainly see here.
For those interested in reading an intellectual book, definitely read this one. Machiavelli always believed that a person becomes a learned person through reading. For someone who agrees with this mindset I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone that has intelligence enough to want to learn rather than those readers who simply are looking for an easy read.
Finally a decent book on Nicolo.......2004-07-07
I give this book an easy 5 stars. This is much less intimidating than many of Nicolo's own writings... De Grazia is interested in his subject, fun, and ultimately very sympathetic to Machiavelli. The book shows how Machiavelli was a poet, a lover, a (really good!) comic playwright, and a champion of democracy, in addition to being one of the founding fathers of political science. I've read the majority of Nicolo's surviving work, often in the Italian, and De Grazia truly portrays him as he was... a courtier after Castiglione's model who (even after his death) suffered more than his share of the "unremitting malice of fortune." READ IT!!!
Niccolo and His Philosophy.......2004-01-03
Let me say first that I did not find this book difficult to read or comprehend, as some reviewers have implied it might be. It was, and is, a scholarly work, but Grazia makes the material lively, interesting, and above all understandable. Each thread in the tapestry that he weaves around the life and philosophy of Niccolo (as he calls him throughout the entire work) is discussed separately but folded back into the whole at regular intervals.
Grazia introduces us to Niccolo Machiavegli (Machiavelli in the Tuscan style) in Chapter 1, a figure often reviled in later ages. From Chapter 2 onward we are treated to an analysis of his works, political, social, and dramatic in the context of an overarching political philosophy. What I found most interesting about Machiavelli In Hell is the interleaving of Niccolo's life with this analysis. He becomes a person rather than the one-dimensional cutout we are often given in school texts - a man of feeling, ideals, and intelligence. With some persistence and careful reading you can it make through this book with a greater understanding of what Niccolo gave to later generations, or even his own. It is not a substitute for The Prince, The Art of War, or the Mandragola but an introduction.
An historian's Machiavelli.......2000-04-07
This is a work of scholarship, not intended to be a page-turner, as other reviewers noted. It is rare to find historical studies that succeed in giving a sense of the subject's mindset. Here one can develop a sense of the Renaissance statesman and philosopher's intellectual journey, without modern idealistic baggage. I have read several studies of Niccolo, and this is the the best by far.
A real treat if yo are ready for some gumnastics.......1999-07-03
Come on. When I checked the reviews and found it averaging only two stars I had to object. The best book on Machiavelli is Leo Strauss' "Thoughts on Machiavelli, which makes this one look like a first grade primer. That a book is too intellectually challenging is not an objection against it. This is an excellent biography. But it needs excellent readers.
Book Description
Gabon is the ideal destination for naturalists, boasting easily accessible rain forests and reserves where an astonishing range of wildlife can be found and environmental conservation and research is being carried out. The country is particularly prized by birders. Excellent history, geography, and culture introductions underpin a practical guide that covers all the hard facts a visitor needs to know, including activities such as fishing, watersports, and whale and dolphin watching. The volcanic islands of São Tomé and Prìncipe lie to the west of Gabon. With a strong Portuguese influence, they are ripe for exploring by independent travelers who will discover an archipelago of sugarloaf peaks, idyllic beaches, and fertile rain forests hosting a range of endemic species. This is the first English travel guide to Gabon and the independent islands of São Tomé and Prìncipe.
Customer Reviews:
Very accurate information and well written.......2006-01-15
I actually only visited São Tomé and I have to say that this guide, although short, is very detailed, both in terms of the historical background and of the present. The approach is straightforward and going through the places, and talking with the people, feels very close to what is described in the guide. Sophie did a great job in capturing the county's spirit.
A must have for visitors to Gabon!.......2004-04-30
I reside in Libreville, Gabon and have not, until now, been able to find much literature about this place in English ... or French for that matter. Then this little gem was published! I take this little book with me everywhere I go, I make a point of consulting it before I plan a trip, ... where to eat in Cocobeach, where to stay in Nyonie, where to shop in Libreville ... it's all in there. I found a couple of phone numbers misprinted, but aside from that, the information on each of the places I have been to is up to date, useful and correct. This book tells it like it is, the good, the bad and the ugly! I highly recommend it to anyone thinking of visiting or living in Gabon.

a great translation.......2006-01-26
I was particularly pleased with this book, because it is a great translation, and the cover is the same as the one shown above. The first book I ordered was not, so I ordered this one from amazon marketplace. I just really love the cover art on these, it's much better than the english version I have.

Wow!.......2006-11-05
As someone who was an English Lit major and an obsessed poker player, I can't think of a better book than Mr. Apostolico's Machiavellian Poker Strategy. I loved it! A real thinking man's approach based on one of the most compelling books of all time. Mr. Apostolico has written many great books, which I implore you to get. But, personally, this is my favorite.

Book Description
Customer Reviews:
Essential reading in any language.......2007-02-24
If my Spanish were better, I would be a better judge on the comments about this being a poor translation. Having read it in English, and now plowing slowly through it in Spanish, I find it enlightening, for the second language opens up new meanings. Machiavelli did not advocate the things he wrote about, he merely chronicled what he saw, and advised his Prince of ways others had come to power, clung to power, and abused power. He was the political genius of his day, and no education today is complete without having read and studied him in at least one language.
WARNING.......2004-07-18
Hey! It's friggin' Spanish!
Just thought you should know before you took the plunge.
Amazing.......2000-08-05
I am a frequent consumer of the so called sub-literature (like most teenagers), but forgive me my dear friends Anne Rice, Marion Bradley, Stephen King, Sidney Sheldon, etc... I love your work, but finally I found myself reading a DECENT and INTELLIGENT and USEFUL book by a genious called Maquiavelo. "The Prince" deserves to be used as a manual, not barely read... I don't say it should be followed blindly, though it should be mentally discussed by all. ESSENTIAL READING !
Maquiavelo... algunas veces mal interpretado..........2000-04-14

An Excellent "Novella" to Brush up on Your Italian.......2007-04-17
Il Piccolo Principe, or "the Little Prince," is a classic for those trying to brush up on whatever language they are interested in. I found this translation (from the original French) to be a particularly clear, enjoyable read.
