"Good night, Gorilla," says the weary watchman as he walks by the gorilla cage on his nightly rounds at the zoo. The gorilla answers by quietly pickpocketing the guard's keys, stealthily trailing him, and unlocking the cages of every animal the oblivious fellow bids goodnight to. Looking much like an exhausted father, the uniformed guard traipses home toward his cottage, while the lonely zoo animals softly parade behind him. The animals manage to slip into his bedroom and nestle unnoticed near his sleepy wife--until the bold little gorilla goes so far as to snuggle up beside her as she turns out the light. Author and illustrator Peggy Rathmann (creator of the Caldecott-winning Officer Buckle and Gloria) relies more on the nuances of her jewel-toned pictures than on words to pace this giggly bedtime story, making it perfect for observant preschoolers. In one inky-black spread, Rathmann lets only the shocked, wide-open eyes of the guard's wife tell us that the gorilla has been detected! Tiny details such as the faithful, banana-toting mouse and sky-bound pink balloon that appear in each picture keep this book fresh, magical, and fun--even after countless bedtime readings. (Baby to preschool) --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars Don't get the Picture Puffin Books (Sagebrush) edition.......2007-09-29

This is a great story book. The 5 stars is for that.

I bought three editions for different kids: Good Night, Gorilla (Picture Puffin Books (Sagebrush)), Good Night, Gorilla, and Good Night, Gorilla (oversized board book). The Puffin edition is bound in a way that makes it difficult to open flat. The paper is thinner than most good hardcover children's books. The two board book editions are very nice. You also might want to try the regular hardcover edition.

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Your Child's Library.......2007-09-17

Goodnight, Gorilla is a delightful book, filled with fun, secrets and anticipation. We started reading it at age 2 and my now 6 year old son still enjoys it! We especially love the dark page with eyes....you will too! It is the perfect companion to '10 Minutes Till Bedtime', also by Peggy Rathmann, because this cast of characters appear in that book as next door neighbors! Together they make a perfect child/baby gift. Thanks Peggy Rathmann!

5 out of 5 stars My Daughter's (and Our) Favorite.......2007-07-23

We received this book as a gift after our daughter's birth, and now that she's ten months old, it's her absolute favorite. She actually goes to her book basket, digs through the all of the books to find this one, and then brings it to us to read to her. The best part is that because the narrative is told through the pictures instead of through words, it's a different book when I read it to her than when her father, grandmother, etc. does. I'm sure that as she gets older, we'll be able to modify our reading of Good Night, Gorilla to suit her age, pointing out different things about the story than interest her now. This book is destined to be a classic!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK.......2007-07-21

My 2 and 3 y/o daughters LOVE this book. It's a fun book and teaching about many animals and the zoo. It's a wonderful gift for your child or a gift to another child. Highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Infants too!.......2007-07-16

My 7 month old son LOVES this book. It is part of his bedtime routine and it is now his favorite book. He looks at every picture and loves the woman's expression at the end. Sometimes we describe what is going on to him, but often we just turn the pages and I see his eyes scanning the scenes.

5 out of 5 stars Great first-hand account into ib.......2007-09-21

This book was an entertaining way to look into the world of ib. After being in ib for quite a while and hearing about this book left and right, I finally had the time to pick it up and read through it. It is right on the money with each of the topics. This book is a must read for anyone thinking of working in investment banking or Wall Street in general.

4 out of 5 stars It's "Business" for Excel Monkeys.......2007-08-24

The numerous other reviewers have already done this work by Rolfe and Troob justice with their detailed and colorful comments and elaborations. So I'll make mine short -- JUST DO IT. Definitely read this book if you are in the trade. It's entertaining and educational. Plus, it makes a cross-country business trip plane ride go much faster.

4 out of 5 stars Raw but Intelligent.......2007-07-10

This is the most "unveiling" book about associate life in investment banking (in equities at least) I've come across and I think holds its own on a Liar's Poker level. It's not low level humor, just highly witty and raw; and well written. You will laugh at loud, yes even you stoic business-types.

If you're thinking about I-banking, I'd recommend this, especially if you believe the myth of cigars, caviar and high-life escapades. MB, with some colorful descriptions, tells it like it is.

I agree with the counter claims made by some bankers in the comments section, and believe MB shouldn't discourage anyone. Any high level professional has to pay dues, the associate years at a bank is analogous to the residency years of a surgeon. Yes you're going to get destroyed, but that's the rite of passage.

Good luck to all the eager bankers out there. Read and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, funny, and useful.......2007-06-19

I finished this book the second time I picked it up because it is absolutely hilarious. A great book, with very funny moments. Also this book gives a great insight into the kind of activities bankers do at the associate level. Great book!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely hilarious.......2007-04-15

I work at an investment bank but I'm not a banker. I just bought this book on a friends recommendation and I must say this read is hilarious. I read it during my commute to work and the other day I just could not stop laughing in the bus. I had tears in my eyes. I had to put the book down before someone noticed and thought I was crazy.

I would read another 100 books in this series!

There are so many business books out there that offer complex theories and require a PHD to read.

Kenneth Blanchard created yet another easy to read classic that will help me not only grow my business and help my clients, it gave me some great lessons to share with my grandchildren too.

Full of practical, simple advice and stories that can help you identify the monkey business in your life, and get the monkeys off your back!

5 out of 5 stars Get those monkeys off your back!.......2007-06-10

If your a mid-level manager and you need some basic supervisory skills training, this is the book for you. Excellent overview--it helped my work productivity from day 1, and a good entree into the rest of the One Minute Manager series.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Lessons Concisely Presented.......2007-06-04

This book is a very quick read that describes some simple rules for managing better by not taking on other people's work. The authors explain that by doing things for your people you are not only making life harder on yourself, but also not actually doing an important part of your job, which is helping people develop. Anyone who manages (or who has a manager and needs to manage up) will benefit from the simple lessons, concisely presented. There are even lessons you can apply to the informal leadership roles many of us have such as parent, or someone involved in a community activity.

5 out of 5 stars Promotion Material.......2007-05-07

Since my first purchase of this book last year, I have recommended it to half a dozen people and received a promotion myself. It's so clear after reading and applying the teachings from this book, that so often as managers, we tend to do a lot of things well but unfortunately we are doing the wrong things at the wrong time. Being free to delegate and ensure that what we let go of is completed with the same level of expectation as we would put on it, is liberating to say the least. A must read if you are feeling too busy to do the things that are important to you outside your work a day world. Best management book I have read.

5 out of 5 stars The One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey.......2007-01-04

This is a great coaching tool to create a conversational strategy for learning to effectively delegate and build trust and empower indiviudals. It is an easy read and when used with graphics and other creative tools it has a dramatic impact on individuals behaviors.

Sixty years have passed since a curious little chimp in Africa met the man with the big yellow hat and got into the first of many scrapes. Decades later, George is as curious--and naughty--as ever. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Curious George's debut, this special edition is a collection of seven classic adventures by Margret and H.A. Rey, along with an introduction by critic Leonard Marcus, a retrospective note by publisher Anita Silvey, a history of the Reys by Dee Jones, curator of the de Grummond Children's Literature Collection, and a photo album. The many generations of fans of the "good little monkey who was always very curious" will be fascinated to learn how H.A. and Margret escaped on bicycle from German-occupied Paris, with just their winter coats and several picture books (including a draft of Curious George, then called Fifi) strapped to the racks. Photos and essays reveal H.A. to have been a gentle, humorous man, while Margret, by all accounts, was spirited and brutally direct, with a keen business mind. The chemistry between them worked beautifully. Between them, they created one of the most beloved characters in children's literature. This handsome volume includes Curious George, Curious George Takes a Job, Curious George Rides a Bike, Curious George Gets a Medal, Curious George Flies a Kite, Curious George Learns the Alphabet, and Curious George Goes to the Hospital. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

"This is George. He lived in Africa. He was a good little monkey, and always very curious." With these words, H. A. and Margret Rey introduced the world to Curious George in 1941, and the world has loved him ever since. The tales of this cheerful and resilient little hero have kept generations of readers enthralled and entertained. Now, in recognition of the sixtieth anniversary of his debut, Houghton Mifflin proudly presents a special edition of George's best-loved adventures. With an introduction by critic Leonard Marcus, a retrospective note by publisher Anita Silvey, and a cataloged history of the Reys by curator Dee Jones, this collection offers a fun and fascinating portrait of a classic character and his unique creators.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Classics in One Book.......2007-09-07

These are great classics. Sure I wish the binding was a little stronger, but with a little care and a little finesse, these classics can be enjoyed by both parents and children for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Curious George Complete Adventures.......2007-08-27

I bought this as a baby gift for a little boy. His parents were delighted and I was honored that this was going to be the first book they have read to him. I loved Curious George when I was a child and I am sure this little one will enjoy this curious and mischevious little monkey as well. After all little boys are more curious than they are mischevious, just like Curious George.

3 out of 5 stars PG -- needs parental guidance in a Post-Goodall world!.......2007-07-13

Although the illustrations are irresistable, I would not recommend the content of the first few books, at least, for children without some guidance from parents/teachers. They would, however, be good springboards for discussions about changing perspectives on wildlife and animal rights. When the Reys wrote their books, human dominance and exploitation of wild animals was almost unquestioned in their culture. Today, the sight of a young chimpanzee being captured, taken to the city, given alcohol and cigarettes, being imprisoned in a jail and then a zoo and being used in the film industry is disturbing, to say the least. I could see children learning to think about animals and wildlife, and learning to empathize with other species, from these books.

5 out of 5 stars All our favorites in one beautiful book........2007-06-05

It's so nice to have all the classic Curious George stories in one, big, beautiful hardcover book. Curious George tales are timeless. This collection would certainly make a nice baby shower gift.

Our daughters love when I read these stories, they never tire of them.

5 out of 5 stars All the old favorites.......2007-03-12

These are all the original works of the Reys, not like some of the other books out there which were done by other authors.

Product Description

Caps for Sale is a timeless classic, in print for over fifty years, and beloved by generations of readers. This easy-to-read story about a peddler and a band of mischievous monkeys is filled with warmth, humor, and simplicity. Children will delight in following the peddlers efforts to outwit the monkeys in this new, enlarged, and redesigned edition, and will ask to read it again and again.

Amazon.com

Subtitled A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business, this absurd and very simple story has become a classic, selling hundreds of thousands of copies since its first publication in 1940. A peddler walks around selling caps from a tall, tottering pile on his head. Unable to sell a single cap one morning, he walks out into the countryside, sits down under a tree, checks that all the caps are in place, and falls asleep. When he wakes up, the caps are gone--and the tree is full of cap-wearing monkeys. His attempts to get the caps back generate the kind of repetitive rhythm that 3- and 4-year-olds will adore. (Preschool and older) --Richard Farr

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Caps for Sale.......2007-09-20

I ordered this book for a new first-grade teacher because she was lacking reading material in her classroom. It has been a favorite story of mine for probably 20 years. I used it in the classroom to have the kids dramatize it as a comprehension check. They loved acting it out. We used paper plates for the caps. The "monkeys" sat on a table when they were "treed." I would recommend it for children's libraries.

5 out of 5 stars Melodic caps for sale..........2007-07-04

Bought this item about 5 years ago... the book 'wore' out so recently ordered another replacement. The grandchildren LOVE it's melodic story. Amazondotcom comes through w/ great deals once again.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL EDITION TO AN OLD, OLD CLASSIC.......2007-05-12

I hate to admit it, but I can remember this story being read to me by my mother shortly after it was first published. I loved it as a child and love it now. The story, at first glance is simple, well told and an absolute delight. The illustrations are "old world," and the type I grew up on. Even though the story has been around for years and years, it is certainly no worse for the wear. What delighted me as a child seems to delight the kids of today. I read this one to my various classes and the kids all seem to love it. Actually, there is not much to not like about this one. Recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars Never Gets Old.......2007-05-02

I recently started reading this book to my two year old, and she loves it as much as I did when I was young. It's fun to incorporate lessons on counting and colors as we read this silly tale of monkey see, monkey do.

5 out of 5 stars Monkey See Monkey Do.......2007-03-29

"Once there was a peddler who sold caps. But he was not like an ordinary peddler carrying his wares on his back. He carried them on top of his head."

When a peddler falls asleep on the job, he finds that his caps are stolen by a bunch of cheeky monkeys. The peddler discovers a way to get his caps back in a hilarious illustration of "Monkey see monkey do".

This book, first written in the 1940's has stood the test of time.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Okay, not great.......2007-08-23

These books are fine. My son loves his Curious George's Are You Curious board book and so I bought him these, thinking he would really like them. They are okay but don't really attract his attention. He has other board books he likes much better (Dear Zoo, for example, is another of his favorites in case you are looking for a great, less common book) and so these are collecting dust on his shelf.

5 out of 5 stars A Happy Toddler.......2007-07-24

My 2 year old loves Curious George and these books are great. They are board books and can stand up to a lot of use. The convenient holder keeps the books in a good storage place.

3 out of 5 stars Board pages a bit flimsy.......2007-06-17

These stories are great. We love Curious George. However, the board books in the box set have thinner and flimsier cardboard pages than the singly-sold board books. They bend easily in my toddler boy's hands (who isn't gentle with books), so I'm saving them for later when he's older.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific!.......2007-06-09

Oh my goodness! My 2 yr old absolutely loves these colorful, kid-friendly books. He almost has the stories memorized and still wants them read to him several times a week. Crayon marks wipe right off, and the little box (with handle) is perfect to keep them together and carry them on weekend trips. I just ordered the blue set of Curious George board books, too.

Book Description

When quiet Ellen Lang enters Elvis Cole's Disney-Deco office, she's lost something very valuable - her husband and young son. The case seems simple enough, but Elvis isn't thrilled. Neither is his enigmatic partner and firepower Joe Pike. Their search down the seamy side of Hollywood's studio lots and sculptured lawns soon leads them deep into a nasty netherworld of drugs and sex - and murder. Now the case is getting interesting, but it's also turned ugly. Because everybody, from cops to starlets to crooks, has declared war on Ellen and Elvis.

3 out of 5 stars Elvis Lives!.......2007-09-20

I bought this because it came so highly recommended off of Amazon. It was ok, but not the best detective novel I have read. I would probably try more in the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series, but I won't be in a rush to buy the books.

4 out of 5 stars Think Spenser, only better.......2007-04-21

When someone mentioned Robert Crais as an author I might enjoy, I did a little homework and decided I'd start with this, his first novel, so I wasn't forced to join his characters mid-stream in their development. The two key players in all of Crais's novels are Elvis Cole, a wise-cracking L.A. private investigator cut from the same cloth as Robert B. Parker's Spenser series with a handsome, athletic, 30-something smart alec who has a strong layer of integrity beneath the cool veneer, and Cole's partner, an ex-cop named Joe Pike who reminds me of every state cop I've ever seen: mirrored aviator sunglasses and a humorlous, slate-faced demeanor. Pike isn't somebody you want to mess with. In contrast to Cole's witticisms and wise cracks, Pike has monosyllabic utterances only. For example, his answering machine has no greeting other than the word "speak."

They make an unlikely pair and Pike plays a very secondary role in terms of character development, but nevertheless adds significant interest.

I'm now on my 5th Elvis Cole novel in as many weeks (I'm reading them in order) and that ought to tell you something about whether they are worth reading. Immensely entertaining.

In this book, Cole is enlisted to help find some missing persons: a Hollywood agent named Mort and Mort's adolescent son. Ellen, Mort's wife, is frantic and scatterbrained and seemingly incapable of making decisions. The book follows Cole and Pike as they track down Mort and his son's whereabouts, his abductors, and their motive. As the book unfolds, we get more insight into Ellen as a woman of considerable resolve and backbone - not just the flighty and indecisive woman of the first few chapters.

As it turns out, there is a bit of a formula to Crais's novels, as I've noticed now that I'm on the fifth installment. But the repetition in terms of story development doesn't bother me. It's actually kind of satisfying...like a certain chord progression you come to expect in a song but with some variations on the melody each time. With each passing book, we learn a little bit more about Cole and Pike (although not too much) and Crais alludes to characters and events from previous stories, sometimes causing them to appear in multiple stories.

All in all, if you like the crime mystery genre but also like a certain light-heartedness and irreverence in your characters, you'll get a kick out of Elvis Cole. I'm not one to laugh out loud at books, but this one made me giggle numerous times and laugh out loud at least twice. Frankly, I like Crais's writing style better than Robert B. Parker and I like the character of Elvis Cole better than Spenser.

My suggestion: start with this book and see if you don't like Cole as good as - or better than - Spenser. Crais has about a dozen installments in the Cole series and one of his latest (#11 or #12 I think) called "The Watchman" actually gives Pike the lead role after 10+ books devoted to Cole. I'll get to it eventually, but am having too much fun reading the books in order to skip ahead now. Besides, the waiting list for "The Watchman" is quite long at my local library and it will probably be another 6 weeks before it is in anyway.

5 out of 5 stars What a Great Beginning.......2007-03-05

After recently reading a couple of Robert Crais novels, and enjoying them immensly, I knew it was time to get introduced to Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. What an introduction it was. The Monkey's Raincoat features some really excellent odd ball characters, and just enough sentiment to make you care for the players.

If action is your thing, there is enough of that to keep anyone interested. The body count actually stacks up pretty quickly. Joe Pike is a bizarre but greatly entertaining partner to the eccentric and equally bizarre Elvis Cole. The one liners are plentiful in this book, with several laugh out loud moments.

I have to run now... off to find the next Cole novel.

This one is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous New Entry In The Genre.......2007-01-03

It's really hard not to like wise-cracking private investigator Elvis Cole. Abandoned by his mother during his teenage years, hardened by a stint in the Special Forces in Vietnam, Elvis has developed a cynical, smartass exterior, but under it all remains committed to helping those who need to be helped. Ellen Lang and her chain-smoking best-friend Janet show up at Cole's art deco-Disney decorated office wanting him to find Ellen's missing husband Mort and their son Perry, who have inexplicably disappeared. Although Ellen proves to be a difficult client to deal with (because of her complete dependancy on others more than anything else) Elvis takes the case. Together with his enigmatic partner, a former Special Forces soldier and LAPD police officer named Joe Pike, Cole soon finds out that Mort Lang wasn't quite the guy his wife thought he was. As the situation escalates, Cole and Pike find themselves in a race against time to recover Mort and Perry before they wind up dead.

This novel works on two levels - first, it's a great mystery/crime novel full of the kinds of insider detail I've seen from Connolly and Wambaugh. The characters are varied and interesting, and at the end of the novel you'll find yourself anxiously searching for the next installment from Robert Crais to find out how the characters further develop. This book also works because of the humour. Elvis never loses sight of the goal, and while the overall context is one of suspense and mystery, the one-liners and observations that Elvis Cole delivers will have you absolutely busting a gut.

4 out of 5 stars Good Start.......2006-08-26

According to many of the other reviewers, this is one of Crais' weaker efforts and the series only gets better from here. If that's true, I'm in for a treat.

I'm a little [...] when it comes to my detective series...I try to always start out by reading the first in the series and continue on sequentially. In the days of Agatha Christie, the mystery was the thing, it was the reason to read the book. "Figuring it out" was the primary goal when reading.

Nowadays, at least for me, the characters are what keep me coming back for more. And I think that after reading the first Elvis Cole novel, I'll be back for more with the second one. Crais has done a good job of introducing us to Cole, but still has a lot of room to develop the "secondary" characters Lou Poitras and Joe Pike, who I'm assuming will be present throughout the series.

The first in the series was well written. You'll get a chuckle out of some of Cole's one liners (a la Spenser), and though the plot was somewhat formulaic, it certainly held my interest. The book was a good read and well worth your time and money.

Book Description

What should we teach our children about where we come from?

Is evolution good science? Is it a lie? Is it incompatible with faith?

Did Charles Darwin really say man came from monkeys? Have scientists really detected "intelligent design"—evidence of a creator—in nature?

What happens when a town school board decides to confront such questions head-on, thrusting its students, then an entire community, onto the front lines of America's culture wars?

From bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize- winning journalist Edward Humes comes a dramatic story of faith, science, and courage unlike any since the famous Scopes Monkey Trial. Monkey Girl takes you behind the scenes of the recent war on evolution in Dover, Pennsylvania, the epic court case on teaching "intelligent design" it spawned, and the national struggle over what Americans believe about human origins.

Told from the perspectives of all sides of the battle, Monkey Girl is about what happens when science and religion collide.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars very interesting account.......2007-09-27

This is a well-written account of the evolution-ID battle in Dover, Pennsylvania. It is more even-handed than many accounts, and attempts to describe the personalities involved. More of a sociological and journalistic treatment than a biological or education one, but the story is well-told, gripping, and complicated nuances are explained clearly.

5 out of 5 stars WHAT CONTROVERSY?.......2007-09-12

Our president was recently quoted as saying the "jury is still out" on evolution. (To which Lewis Black replied: "WHAT jury, where?")

Where, indeed?

There's no need to mince words here: evolutionary theory - Darwin's defined mechanism of change through random mutation and natural selection - has been widely confirmed by modern genetics, to say nothing of "hard" evidence in the form of transitional species in the fossil record.

Specifically, the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA as the molecular building block and instructional "codebook" of life, and human genome coding - which were unknown in Darwin's day - all tend to validate evolution.
"As the science of biochemistry has developed, as the science of cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, and other elements of science have developed, all of these have fit beautifully into the general framework described by Darwin almost 150 years ago!" says biology professor and textbook author Kenneth Miller.

Yet there are still those in our society who would have us believe that - to paraphrase Tina Fey - Adam and Eve rode dinosaurs to church! It seems that these misguided and misinformed souls, (who apparently regard The FLINTSTONES as if it were a documentary,) would presume to indoctrinate our children rather than teach them.

We can thank the Founding Fathers for their wisdom and foresight in giving us the Establishment Clause - thereby fashioning a nation in which religion and government were never to interfere with each other. Without its protection, we'd all be fighting the same Dark Age, regressive, anti-intellectual forces that the parents of Dover, Pennsylvania suddenly found themselves confronted with in 2004. (Yes, you read right - 2004. Not 1304 - or even 1804, mind you - but 2004!!)

I read Edward Humes' excellent MONKEY GIRL from cover to cover in two sittings, and I can recommend it, without reservation, to thinking adults of all walks of life. That is, people who are interested in science, reason, education, law and logic; people who care about who we really are, and how we actually came to be.
"Intelligent Design" proponents - and other children - are encouraged to wait for the comic book version.

[P.S: One amusing postscript - which isn't in the book - concerns the cretinous evangelist "Dr" Kent Hovind, a smug creationist huckster who's been spreading pseudo-scientific babble for decades, both in and out of Dover. He was sentenced in January 2007 to 10 years in Federal prison for income tax evasion. Tsk, tsk! It seems that Mr Hovind's math is just as suspect as his "science"!]

5 out of 5 stars A Riveting Account Well Worth the Read.......2007-09-07

As someone who's never had issues with religion and science, including evolution, I wanted to know what all the Intelligent Design fuss was about. So I started reading books. First I read Michael Shermer's Why Darwin Matters. This peaked my interest to know more. Then I found Monkey Girl. I almost didn't buy the book, thinking that reading about a court case would be too boring. Boy was I ever wrong!

I couldn't put this book down. The author does a masterful job of painting a vivid picture of everyone involved in the case and providing helpful background information, including history sometimes going back centuries, to show how the U.S. divide between evolution and Intelligent Design came together in one school board in one high school in one small town in Pennsylvania.

Now I understand much better.

The last chapter of the book begins:

"It is humanity's unique blessing and peculiar curse to be the only species on Earth, as far as we know, that worries so obsessively and at such great expense about where we came from and why we're here."

My journey to know these things has taken me through Protestantism, Judaism, and now Buddhism. I've felt fortunate to live in a country that protects my right and everyone else's to be able to learn about and practice my chosen spiritual path. Or to choose to follow no particular path if I want.

But some Christians in this country want to do away with this right. To them, their approach to religion is the only approach. They even say it's what this country was founded on. I've read that's not the case. So now I'm reading about the faith of our founding fathers.

What bothers me the most, if the recounting of the Dover case is true, which I think it is, is that people who call themselves religious believers will lie to try to impose their beliefs on others. This seems very unChristian to me, and unJewish, unMuslim, and unBuddhist for that matter.

Given the judge's ruling in the Dover case that Intelligent Design is religion, not science, I'm hopeful that my Constitutional rights will continue to be upheld by people who understand their vital importance to our country. I have no problem with any religion, as long as I or my children or grandchildren are not required to learn about it in school or any other public or governmental place.

4 out of 5 stars Get the monkey off Darwin's back.......2007-08-11

Monkey Girl, by Edward Humes, is the story about the ongoing conflict between the theory of evolution and Intelligent Design (ID). While Humes holds no official training in biology or theology, in this book he has been able to use his skills as an investigative writer to bring the conflicts of these two theories into a clearer picture than what other books have been able to achieve. According to Humes, the intent of this book was to "help dispel the larger myths about evolution theory, its relationship to religion, and the questions that science can and cannot answer." It is the goal of this author to clarify the facts of this dispute in order to allow his open-minded readers to decide what they believe to be true. I believe Humes has achieved this goal.

A major part of the appeal of this book is the style in which it is written. It allows the non-scientific reader to understand some complicated topics. As shown in the trial in Harrisburg, PA (Kitzmiller et al. v. Dover Area School District), it is very easy for people to get bogged down or even bored by the details of evolution. The greatest strength of this book is that it teaches the reader about these details inside a story that is not just easy to comprehend, but in a way that keeps the reader's attention from beginning to end. To do this, Humes ably portrays the ridiculous and shameful behavior of fundamentalist Christian groups of people who have played and who continue to play an active role in this controversy. One extremist that Humes points to is the fundamentalist speaker Kent Hovind. According to Hume, Hovind outlandishly preaches that the teaching of evolution is the cause of the moral decay in this country and is directly related to "increases in crime, premarital sex, adultery, and drug use." What is scary is that Humes never runs out of extremists to talk about, as he is able to tell the reader about death treats Judge Jones, a Republican appointed by George W. Bush and much approved of by the Intelligent Design people before the trial in Harrisburg, received when he dared to rule against their case. While the portrayal of these extremists is a strength for this book and is understandable, it also could be considered a weakness. I believe that Humes devotes too much print to these extremists. While he does say that there are mainstream Christian groups, including the Catholic Church, that have no problem with theory of evolution, much less time is given to this much larger group of people.

In leading up to the climax of this book, Humes gives the reader a history of evolution's disagreements with creationism and introduces the latest challenge, ID, being put forth by the Discovery Institute. A well-funded think tank of some very bright "scientists", the goal of the Discovery Institute is to introduce ID into the public school system. Once the stage has been set, Humes describes the scene in Harrisburg where, not only was the judge convinced that ID was essentially creationism, but also a scene where one by one, scientists convincingly showed that the theory of evolution is real science and ID is not. For example, proponents of ID dispute the evidence of decent from a common ancestor. Yet, evidence in the trial showed that the chromosomes of chimpanzees are remarkably similar to those of humans. Also, Dr. Michael Behe has argued that complex parts of an organism such as the blood-clotting cascade could not have come from evolution. His theory, irreducible complexity, is that "natural selection can't create such a complex machine all in one step, nor could it gradually assemble it in the conventional evolutionary model, one bit at a time, because the bits don't work on their own." But, much to Behe's embarrassment, his theory was proven wrong under cross-examination in a way that the judge described as "painful." Time and again, Humes describes scientists who were very able to convince the judge that the facts show that ID is not science and is religiously based and therefore should not be taught in a public school system.

Monkey Girl is a well-written and informative book that should play a crucial role in helping many legislators, judges, school officials, and average Americans understand the controversy between evolution and Intelligent Design and the true facts about each theory. In writing this book, Edward Humes has provided a valuable service to the world of science that will hopefully have a positive impact on the theory of evolution and how it relates to religious beliefs. For those mainstream Christians who believe that an intelligent designer has utilized evolution to mold the creation over the last 3.5 billion years, this book will provide some answers.

5 out of 5 stars Riveting.......2007-08-10

I thought I knew a lot about the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District trial: I had read Judge Jones's decision and some of the trial testimony, I've read books written by some of the witnesses, and so forth. I expected this book to fill in around the edges of my understanding.

Instead, it showed me a whole new picture of the trial and its place in the American "culture wars." To begin with, the book is very well written and exciting. (I stayed up reading it last night four hours past my usual bedtime.) Second, it shows players on all sides as intricate, three-dimensional individuals. It would be easy to ridicule Bill Buckingham as an ignorant rube, but in this book he comes across as a man of courage and conviction, as well as a man lacking an understanding of either science or religion. Humes makes his own opinions clear, but those who disagree with him are treated with respect, while those who agree with him are not given a free pass. Finally, while Humes centers his writing on the Dover trial and the science of evolution, he also puts it into context with discussions of Scopes and Kansas, as well as the role of reason in making policy.

One specific thing I learned from this book is that Dover school board members and administrators thought that the term "origin of life" meant macroevolution, speciation, and the origin of humanity. I didn't believe anyone could be so far off base, but I looked up the trial transcripts and found that he was not exaggerating.

I found three errors: (1) Humes claims that the Revolutionary Battle of Yorktown, Virginia occurred in York, Pennsylvania. (2) He describes iron molecules (not atoms) as spin aligned. (3) He twice claims that Bill O'Reilly broadcasts for the Cable News Network. (On a third occasion Humes correctly places O'Reilly at Fox News.)

Humes's love of America, while never mentioned explicitly, comes through clearly on every page. Humes worries about our country in an environment were every complex question is reduced to a simplistic two-sided barroom brawl, and were people cannot distinguish fact from opinion.

The response elicited by these stunningly emotional portraits are like nothing I have experienced in years of looking at photographs of animals.
I agree with the reviewer who suggested you ignore the captions. These are prime examples of photographs that transend the 1000 words they may be worth. Priceless.
