5 out of 5 stars A history was kept........2007-09-15

As a chinese knowing 70's chinese farmer life, I found that the daily details the author picked to present are very real and worth to keep. Sometimes, I even doubt that the author is a local taiwaness. Though you may not believe many details if your experinces about China/Taiwan are only from recent days, you can not deny something recorded in 60's. I personally think this is a very valuable book to keep the ordinary life of Chinese/taiwaness life befor the globelization or before the invade of Westen cultures.
As an anthropology rather than a history book, the strength is details, and the attempt that the authors eadeavors to keep the details( without the prejudice). Are not those details truly the history? So, I guess that the value of this book will be truly found when Chinese/taiwaness find the book totally foreign. Let us witness.

4 out of 5 stars Quick and enjoyable read........2002-08-03

I read this book for an anthropology class. I find it very enjoyable as a novel (very lively dialogues and interesting characters, some of whom you will like and identify with), but I question its credibility as an ethnography. Half of the people in my class believed that the author is biased, and that her views towards the women are especially harsh. As someone who is familiar with Taiwan (the book is not about mainland China), I find some descriptions/observations from the book very foreign. Just don't make too much out of the book.

3 out of 5 stars The house of Lim.......2000-10-24

This book is about the farm family. Aside from the family relationship that are not terribuly different from what you have seen in other works and think of every day living in the traditional family. One of WOlf's strengths in this book is her interaction with the lim family. This book is good to know the chinese large family which was village life for those with a general interest in china. It was interesting to know the other country's family society.

5 out of 5 stars History of East Asia Review.......1999-11-05

Being a student at Johns Hopkins University, and majoring in East Asian Studies, I found this book to be very educating and interesting. The stories are fast paced, and the reader needs no prior understanding of Chinese society and tradition. This is a story of a Chinese farm family entangled in conflict, and the methods in which the father, Lim Han-Ci, and later, the second son, Lim Chieng-cua, operate to maintain the traditions and honor of the family. One of Wolf's strengths in this book is her interaction with the Lim family, and her reactions to different events. She understands the culture and traditions of a farm family in 1930's Taiwan, yet is able to put a Western perspective on all of it. Ms. Wolf is able to show that the most important thing to a Chinese man is tradition, face, filial piety, honor, and respect. In sum, Wolf's understanding of the integral relationships between parents, foster parents, children, adopted children, wives, second wives, and even the locals, enables us to gain a full perspective of why certain family issues were relevant, and how they were properly adhered to. This work is a brilliant contribution to our understanding of the Chinese family hiearchy, and why discrimination, sex biasness, and family honor was so important to so many different generations in Chinese society.

5 out of 5 stars Cat and Mouse in the Haunted House.......2007-05-20

I am in[..]and I read the Geronimo Stilton book called Cat and Mouse in the Haunted House for my final book report of the year. It was the best book ever! My favorite part about reading this Geronimo Stilton book was that it was very mysterious and had mummies, witches, and ghosts! That made the book even more exciting! I was holding my breath, waiting to see how the book would end. When I was reading, I could hardly wait to turn the page! I just couldn't read quick enough! Geronimo is a fun character, and I love reading about his adventures! Once I finished the book I was sad that it was over. I am so glad that there are many other books in the series! I definitely recommend this book and the rest of the Geronimo Stilton series to anyone reading this review. If you love great mysteries, I'm sure you will enjoy this book as much as I did! I hope my review was helpful and that you have a great time reading this book and other adventures about Geronimo!

Geronimo Stilton:
Cat and Mouse in a Haunted House

He's too fond of his fur! Cat and Mouse in a Haunted House is a spectacular book for anyone who loves fiction. The famous Geronimo Stilton, a mouse by the way, is also known for many other books such as the following: Curse of the Cheese Pyramid, Merry Christmas Geronimo and many others. On this adventure, Geronimo is off to see his great Aunt Sugarfur. On his way home, a storm blows in a Geronimo is stuck in the woods; which were deserted; or so he thought. That's when he discovers Cannycat Castle. Geronimo is a `fraidy mouse, but it's wet and cold outside and Geronimo is not liking the weather, so he decides to try out the castle. He finds the castle is haunted with past residents, including one with only one paw! He calls up his sister Thea, his cousin Trap, and his nephew Benjamin. Together they fight off ghouls, goblins and other creepy things to stay alive. If you like Harry Potter, you'll love this! This book is funny, scary, and action packed all rolled into one. It's number three in his fur-raising adventures, and another one you just don't want to miss.

5 out of 5 stars Cat and Mouse in the Haunted House.......2006-03-14

Boo! Hi,I'm the ghost of Casey Gray.I just read a book called Geronimo Stiltion, Cat and Mouse in the Haunted House. It's a furr-azing book. If you like this book, there are over 20 others!!! I give it two thumbs up.In the back of the book, there is a map of were Geronimo works, what city he lives in, and what island he lives on. Oh No!!! The books are runing away!!! Come on, they're fast.

5 out of 5 stars The mouse is just so loveable!!!.......2005-07-29

It's smart, it's humourous and it's clumpsy most of the time!

Kids of all age will love Geronimo. We have a quicker full set in Hong Kong printed in Chinese and I figure it's a great way to put the 2 language versions side by side to get kids interested in a 2nd / 3rd / 4th language! (Much easier than to get them sit down in front of TV in a foreign tongue.)

Don't I wish that I know Italian as well to apprecitate the original version.

5 out of 5 stars A Scary Adventure for Geronimo!.......2004-05-24

This book is awesome! Geronimo gets lost in the forest and has to spend the night in a haunted house! Geronimo gets really excited when he finds a library full of books, but he gets scared away by a ghost. The scariest part was when the ghost of Duke Slicepaw came out!

I like the way the book is printed with the words being different colors and styles. It has lots of pictures and maps too. It makes it easier for me to read it. I am going to read all fifty titles as they are translated from Italian to English!

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best general-purpose book about wolves.......1999-01-08

David Mech is probably the world's foremost authority on wolves. He began publishing in the early 1960s and hasn't stopped since. This is one of his best general-readership books; it contains one-of-a-kind pictures and an easy, engaging account of the team's summer stay, literally among the wolves. Reminiscent of Farley Mowatt's "Never Cry Wolf," except that Mech came prepared, and didn't need to eat mice!

Well worth tracking down, "Living with the Wolves" is out-of-print, but happily, Mech has just published a ten-year followup! Look for "The arctic wolf: ten years with the pack", ISBN 0896583538, which Amazon now has.

This guy's been at it so long that there's even a book ABOUT him: "Wolfman: exploring the world of wolves", by Laurence Pringle, ISBN 068417832X. And for an excellent accompaniement to the book, view the National Geographic video "White Wolf", where you can see many of the same wolves you met in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic subject-matter, uninspiring style........1997-03-17

L. David Mech (NOT David L.) achieved something that most biologists could only dream about: he gained the trust of a wild pack of wolves on Ellesmere Island, in the high Arctic. You may have read the National Geographic article he wrote about it.
The book is more or less a filled-out version of the NG article. It's simply laid out and nicely presented with lots of photographs.
Most of the book concerns the pack's everyday activities and behaviour - socialising, hunting, feeding pups, and so on. There's some information on wolves in general, for people who are completely new to the subject. Mech also tries to describe the almost overwhelming emotion of making contact with the pack.

Mech has a scientist's style. His first priority is to make the text totally truthful, and his second is to make it clear and readable. He does very well on both points.
This scientific approach has a drawback: it's very difficult to write a 'hard' scientific book that still has the spark of delight in it. Like most people, Mech doesn't really have the knack. The main let-down is the way Mech sometimes explains the hard facts, gives a tiny, tantalising glimpse of the wolves' nature or personalities - and then changes the subject. I got the impression that he was leaving out some of the most fascinating insights, maybe because he couldn't back them up scientifically.

Still, it's a first-class introduction to the Arctic wolf. I recommend it.
And by the way, the photography is great. And Arctic wolf pups are very, very cute.

Book Description

Acclaimed as one to the country's top one hundred interior designers by both Metropolitan Home and Architectural Digest, Vicente Wolf is the uncontested master of cool, luminous rooms that combine strength and sensuality. From a rich but disciplined palette of materials, he creates a signature minimalism that is simple, handsome, and eminently comfortable. In Learning to See, Wolf shares the secrets of his alchemy, insights into a design process that he says starts with taking his traveler's eye into every environment. If you, like he, can simply transfer the special excitement and intense sensations you feel when you are in nature or when you first encounter something exotic to the way you want to feel on entering a room for the first time, you can learn to see. With incisive text and more than one hundred sixty photographs, Wolf walks you through this process. While providing step-by-step instructions on such practical matters as how to create floor plans, treat windows, arrange furniture, hang pictures, use flowers and mirrors and other accents, he helps instill confidence to trust your own aesthetic inspiration.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very worthwhile.......2007-08-11

One of few exceptional decor books out there. Set apart from the rest because the writer gives the reader very valuable tips - information not easily picked-up by just looking at photographs which is what so many other decor books are filled with. It is by far one of the best books in my decor book collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-07-24

A beautiful book with good advice. Mr.Wolf presents his talent and vision for decorating chic rooms as well as his unique perspective on what works and what doesn't. Here's to an original!

4 out of 5 stars beautiful book.......2007-06-01

Vicente Wolf is a great designer with a clean, modern yet luxury driven aesthetic. His interiors are always chic with little surprises thrown in like gilt Louis XV chairs tossed around a modern round table. Love that. The book is a great resource for color (which he actually gives Ben Moore specs) and for spacial planning. He tends to wax poetic about design and his vision...blah, blah, blah, but the photographs speak for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Design insights.......2006-08-07

I am planning on becoming a decorator in the future and this book was an excellent inspiration as well as a great resource for ideas and thinking outside of the box.
It's a sophisticated view of the home, not just typical how to's that leave you with a stale idea of how to decorate. Rather each page is a refreshing and dynamic look at different ways to design a room.
No cheesy floral valances or typical catalog rooms. These pages are filled with thought provoking furniture and color choices to stimulate your own creativity.

5 out of 5 stars a REAL power to SEE.......2005-10-26

This book is beatiful in its layout and composition, as well as the concepts presented ... and it's helping me see and create more pleasing compositions in my world - both in my physical environment and with my photography.

    Book Description

The Tugendhat House in Brno (Czech Republic) was planned and built by Mies van der Rohe from 1928–1930, and is universally regarded not only as one of his masterpieces, but also as one of the most important buildings of European Modern architecture. What makes this monograph particularly fascinating is the fact that it presents previously unpublished photographs belonging to the Tugendhat family. These show the house as it was when it was first lived in. The facade and the roof terrace are, as the architect had envisioned, covered with climbers and creepers, thus making it clear that the architecture of the house and the landscaped garden were conceived as a whole. A representative collection of plans and drawings from Mies van der Rohe’s atelier can also be seen for the first time. Carefully produced photographs of the original furniture in the family’s possession, much of which has never been shown, are also included. Essays by Wolf Tegethoff, Franz Schulze, and Ivo Hammer give a detailed analysis of the significance of the Tugendhat House in the context of Mies van der Rohe’s architecture as a whole, as well as the living concepts of Modern architecture, to which Mies made such a decisive contribution. Daniela Hammer-Tugendhat applies herself to the key question as to how habitable the Tugendhat House was, based on her personal recollections and texts written by her parents.

      Book Description

This book examines the relationship between the White House, in the person of its press secretary, and the press corps through a linguistic analysis of the language used by both sides. A corpus was compiled of around fifty press briefings from the late Clinton years. A wide range of topics are discussed from the Kosovo crisis to the Clinton-Lewinsky affair. br This work is highly original in demonstrating how concordance technology and the detailed linguistic evidence available in corpora can be used to study discourse features of text and the communicative strategies of speakers. It will be of vital interest to all linguists interested in corpus-based linguistics and pragmatics, as well as sociolinguists and students and scholars of communications, politics and the media.

I thought for sure that my favorite RPG was dead... then this book came and my fears have been quelled! Book Description

Along the Pacific coast of North America, the fates of people and salmon have been intertwined since the end of the last Ice Age. Salmon Nation leads readers deep into the watersheds of the West Coast in the company of six knowledgeable guides to better understand the most celebrated fish of western North America. Thoughtful essays by Native American writer Elizabeth Woody, fisheries biologist Jim Lichatowich, journalist Richard Manning, former commercial fisherman Freeman House, and environmental writer Seth Zuckerman trace the relationship between people and salmon from the abundance that sustained Northwest Coast cultures to the troubled world of salmon today, and depict a future of rivers restored and fishing livelihoods revived-a future still within our reach. Geographer Dorie Roth's full-color maps of the state of Pacific salmon today offer a powerful "big-picture" perspective that lends a new urgency to efforts to heal the breach between people and salmon.

Though imperiled across much of their range, salmon populations can rebound when people mend their ways. With words, maps, and images, Salmon Nation invites its readers home to a place where people and fish can thrive together.
