5 out of 5 stars Just The Light That I Needed.......2007-09-13

This book was a lifesaver for me. It put light into my dark, dim world. When I found this book, I was in a severe depression, going through a most difficult time in my life. I credit it with saving me. And I give glory to God for putting it in my hands.

No matter where you are in your life, this book will benefit you. You don't have to be as low as I was for this book to bless you. It is a must read for everyone!!

It is worth every dime that it cost and then some. Once you read it, you will want to put it next to your bible and keep it forever.

It means so much to me that I purchase it for everyone that I cross paths with, who seems to be in need of faith, love, comfort, and/or support. I use it as a way to minister to those in need.

You will LOVE it!

I have this book and have read it. I took notes on it, and I plan to read it again!

5 out of 5 stars His light shines brightly, even thru the Celebrate Recovery 12-Steps.......2006-04-21

This is a MUST-HAVE companion book especially if you are going through or contemplating on going through a Celebrate Recovery 12-step group. Although it is not all about the 12-steps, it is applicable to wherever you're at in life and whatever you're faced with.

I can remember the 1st day I walked slowly into a women's 12-step group @ Saddleback, it was the scariest thing but I did it anyway with faith in God, knowing there are VICTORIES awaiting.

As I cleared out my schedule, including relationships, to stay focused w/ minimal distractions and to allow myself to lean more on God rather than others, I found that going thru the Celebrate Recovery participant guides were emotionally exhausting as I've had to dig up hurts, habits and hang-ups from the past and present. I eventually found myself searching for a book that I could read that was applicable to where I was at - preparing to dive into my 4th step (moral inventory). And so when I came across this profound book title 'Just Enough Light for the Step I'm on' by Stormie Omartian, I thought - "WOW, how applicable!"

One of the cool things about this book, aside from that it points me to God in each page and that there are enlightening prayers throughout, is that this book applies to every experience we face in this life, not just while going through a 12-step. You'll identify with much in this book.

I am definitely A WORK IN PROGRESS!

Although I'm not quite close to finishing the most difficult step (4th) yet, I am walking step by step on this journey and path with God and with JUST ENOUGH LIGHT FOR THE STEP I'M ON thru every layer of hurt, habit & hang-up to full transformation, restoration, healing, and countless VICTORIES!

This book, already highly recommended to the women in my step group, will continue to be a constant reference in my bedroom library, along with 2 other books by Stormie, 'Power of a Praying Woman' and 'The Prayer That Changes Everything.'

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

If you are ready to go to the 'next level' to coin the phrase, with God this is the book for you.
It helps to refocus our view of a deep spiritual walk with God. Some of it may seem like a 'how-to' book but gratefully most of it is not.

5 out of 5 stars Secrets of the Secret Place- No Longer A Secret.......2007-07-20

This book is great. It gives the reader first hand information on "jump starting" a wonderful relationship with God. This book tells us HOW to start, rekindle, continue and maintain that ever important relationship with God. It is a must read (over and over again) for anyone interested in obtaining what so many have thought for so long was out of our reach. We have the ability and the right to have a personal relationship with God and we should take advantage of it. I recommend this book highly! You'll find yourself wanting to practice the principles in the book as well as extend the infomation to others.
Don't wait any longer

Bob Sorge is a man in these "last days" whom God is using to proclaim insight to Who God truly is. He is a writer, man, a saint of God, who has been crushed by a personal tragedy, but in the process, pure, oil has been expressed through this crushing. This book is so powerful, especially if you are needing a jolt to gain intimacy with God.

Excellent devotional for personal or group study. I highly recommend it and will read and reread it many times.

Book Description

It's the edgy gift book for every unmarried woman who's fending off her nudgy mother and overly concerned (over-bearing?) friend, who can't go to a holiday dinner, class reunion, shower or wedding without hearing the usual round of questions. Something like So, why aren't you married yet? Or sometimes, Still not found that special someone? Or any variation thereof.

Delightful, irreverent, and witty, Even God is Single, So Stop Giving Me a Hard Time is an affirmation for every girl who's single and loving it. Even God is Single is strong, sexy, smart, and edgy. And joyous-it celebrates singlehood, just as it pays homage to the self-assured and savvy woman who knows that you're not half a person just because you're not half a couple.

Even God is Single asks is it "monogamy" or "monotony?" Shows that given the 50% divorce rate, you haven't missed out on marriage, you just skipped a few divorces. And fearlessly examines the role models. Married? Frankenstein, Linda Tripp, and 20,000 Moonies. Single? Catwoman, Superwoman--and, of course, God.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-05-09

This is not so much a book as a hard bound pamphlet. No substance to speak of and zero depth. Disappointing in that yet another book takes a flippant approach to singleness and Christianity.

3 out of 5 stars Great Pick Me Up.......2005-11-04

Even God is Single is a wonderfully irreverent look at all the reasons why being single is not the end of the world and may even be a plus. Not only is it well written but the illustrations are fabulous. Never let anyone dare question your single status again. Buy the book if you or a friend needs a good laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Let Me Be ..........2003-01-26

Let me be single. I do not want to get married. Thank you for this fun and interesting book.

5 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet.......2003-01-17

This one is shorter than most of Karen Salmansohn's books, but it certainly is sweet. Marriage is not the be-all and end-all of life in the 21st Century !! Of course, if you do want to change your status, check out her new book for 2003 -- "How To Change Your Entire Life By Doing Absolutely Nothing" -- which I also enjoyed very much. Perceptive humor can be good for you.

1 out of 5 stars A silly,unamusing book.......2002-04-24

I dont understand why any man would want to do the illustrations for Karen Salmansohns books.I personally am so repulsed by this woman I would want nothing to do with any of her projects. This book isnt any better than her other books, theyre all worthy of only one star reviews.

Book Description

Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu has long been admired throughout the world for the heroism and grace he exhibited while encouraging countless South Africans in their struggle for human rights. In God Has a Dream, his most soul-searching book, he shares the spiritual message that guided him through those troubled times. Drawing on personal and historical examples, Archbishop Tutu reaches out to readers of all religious backgrounds, showing how individual and global suffering can be transformed into joy and redemption. With his characteristic humor, Tutu offers an extremely personal and liberating message. He helps us to “see with the eyes of the heart” and to cultivate the qualities of love, forgiveness, humility, generosity, and courage that we need to change ourselves and our world.

Echoing the words of Martin Luther King, Jr., he writes, “God says to you, ‘I have a dream. Please help me to realize it. It is a dream of a world whose ugliness and squalor and poverty, its war and hostility, its greed and harsh competitiveness, its alienation and disharmony are changed into their glorious counterparts. When there will be more laughter, joy, and peace, where there will be justice and goodness and compassion and love and caring and sharing. I have a dream that my children will know that they are members of one family, the human family, God’s family, my family.’”

Addressing the timeless and universal concerns all people share, God Has a Dream envisions a world transformed through hope and compassion, humility and kindness, understanding and forgiveness.

"Like Desmond Tutu's life, this book is a testament to the power of faith and optimism in human affairs."

5 out of 5 stars Love, Charity and Devotion to Jesus Christ.......2007-09-14

What an eloquent writer! Bishop Tutu writes so beautifully, especially when he describes the Love of God. The concept of transfiguration is explained in a passage about the cross which truly brought me closer to my Lord. Dear Christian brothers and sisters: read this book and be prepared to have your prejudices and fears about other people shattered by the Love of God.

Desmond Tutu is a man of morals and conscience with the courage of his convictions. This book should be required reading for every school student. Better yet, invite him to talk -- he is outstanding!

A wonderful book that has so many good points. This book is full of love, compassion, and sharing attributes. Gentleness and forgiveness for all seems to be the theme throughout the book.

Book Description

In the Company, youre either a God or a Pawn, but sometimes you have to be both. These eight stories, reprinted for the first time, delve further into the history and exploits of the Company and its operatives, including Mendoza, Lewis, and Alec. The book opens with the novella, To the Land Beyond the Sunset, starring Lewis and Mendoza, and involving a strange tribe in Bolivia whose members claim to be gods. Their ability to grow a small tropical paradise in the middle of the desert certainly seems godlike, and its Mendozas job to figure out their secret. Standing in His Light features Van Drouten and her role in the career of the artist Jan Vermeer. The story illustrates how, with a little help from the Company, lost masterpieces can be found (or created) easily. Other stories include the original novelette, Hellfire at Twilight, that concludes the volume and tells of Lewis infiltrating the famous Hellfire Club in the England of the eighteenth century. This book is a compelling read for every Baker fan, and essential for Company addicts.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff, though you need some background.......2007-08-18

The most recent couple of novels in the "Company" universe have been a little bit disappointing to me - in fact, in my review of one of them, I stated that it would have been a better book had it been short stories. Well, in this book, Baker proves she is still really good at the stories! I was much happier with these than I had been with the "Machine" books.

The stories in this one mostly involve Lewis. There are references in the stories to things that have happened in the earlier novels; the stories are best enjoyed if you've already read "In the Garden of Iden" although you don't have to have read the rest of the novels - that one will provide enough background. That's not to say you shouldn't read the rest of the earlier novels - all four of the first four Company novels are great!

The first story, "To the Land Beyond the Sunset," contains allusions to a particular disaster that happened to Lewis in another book. The indigenes in this story are very funny. (The dust jacket illustration is probably supposed to refer to this story, but it's not accurate.)

The third story, "Angel in the Darkness," is the one that will provide you with some background about how the Company universe works and who are these cyborgs, anyway?, if you haven't read the novels.

The last story, "Hellfire at Twilight," may particularly appeal to readers of Georgian and Regency romances, who will be familiar with the idea of Hellfire clubs.

Several of the stories have already appeared in magazines, particularly Asimov's, but I didn't mind; I enjoyed re-reading them.

All in all, her best in a while!

5 out of 5 stars Being an immortal cyborg is not a fulltime party.......2007-05-15

The beauty of the universe created by Baker is that the characters may appear in any place and any time (after their own birth). In these seven stories we see Literary Preservationist Lewis, Botanist Mendoza, Facilitator Joseph and others in a range of times and locales. A recurring theme is that they carry out the will of the Company without always knowing the reasons for the assignments and often with any particular joy. Such is the life of these immortal cyborgs, serving the entity that created them.

Personally, I think the short form is Kage's strongest area and this is some of her best.

To The Land Beyond The Sunset.
Mendoza and Lewis in the New World of the seventeenth century

The Catch
Concerning the Company's early and imperfect efforts to create an immortal

The Angel In The Darkness
Set in 1990s Los Angeles - a cyborg watches over family members

Standing In His Light
The life of the painter Vermeer - and the desires of a cyborg for something different

A Night On The Barbary Coast
Set in early San Francisco Joseph and Mendoza on an errand for the company

Welcome To Olympus, Mr. Hearst
Set in 1933 at Hearst Castle. Joseph and Lewis on an errand for the company

Hellfire At Twilight
Lewis on an errand for the company

Does it sound like the cyborgs spend a lot of time running errands for the Company? You are correct.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, as always!.......2007-05-09

For those of you who read "The Company" novels, but avoid "The Company" short story collections because you dislike short stories, I highly recommend that you read ALL of the books. The short stories have many important clues that flesh out the many sub-plots, characters, their backstories and motivations in the novels. Without the short stories, you are missing out on a much richer experience.

For instance, in this last collection, I wonder about Mr. Hearst! (Intriguing, isn't it?)

As always, I can't wait for the next installment!

5 out of 5 stars great!.......2007-05-07

While it didn't further the main plot of Mendoza and Alec, I still enjoyed this book, and it fits in well. I loved reading it. :)

5 out of 5 stars Every one of these stories is a winner.......2007-04-15

I dare say that you found this collection of stories (mostly novellas and long short stories) because you -- like me -- discovered Kage Baker's marvelous universe of The Company, in which cyborgs serve a huge corporation of the future. If you haven't yet read the series, I strenuously recommend that you begin with In The Garden of Iden. You can probably follow each of the stories if you start with this collection (the author does a brief arm-wave in each one to tell you the basics), but your experience will be vastly enhanced if you read these in a larger context. (You don't have to read EVERY one of the full novels, but I think you need the character understanding from the first one or two.)

I tend to be uncomfortable reading most short story collections, because there are predictably a few really excellent tales, a couple that are pretty good, and the rest... ho-hum or worse. I'm happy to say that Gods & Pawns is a remarkable exception. Every one of these stories is excellent, shows an aspect of history (through the eyes of Dr Zeus Inc.), and lets us vicarously enjoy the experiences of characters we've grown to love (Mendoza, Lewis, and Joseph). They're funny, thoughtful, surprising... everything I want from short fiction.

If you like Kage Baker's "Company" universe, this is definitely worth your time and money. If you haven't yet discovered this marvelous author, then you should read her stuff... but please don't cheat yourself. Read In the Garden of Iden first, so you can appreciate the depth she brings to even a short story.

Book Description

After the publication of her best-selling book To Begin Again, Naomi Levy received a flood of feedback from readers telling her how much the prayers in it had helped and moved them. Many urged her to publish a collection of her prayers—and now she has.

In a time when we all need inspiration, comfort, and connection, Talking to God will help us reclaim prayer as an integral part of our lives, making it as natural and uninhibited as talking to our loved ones. Prayer is essential to the lives of millions, but many of us are searching for ways to supplement traditional prayers with ones that are less formal and more intimate.

Written in a simple and direct style, the prayers in this book—and the wonderful stories that accompany them—are for people of all faiths, and for all occasions large and small. Naomi Levy’s personal prayers address the anxieties and roadblocks we all face in contemporary life. There are prayers for facing a new day, realizing one’s potential at work, celebrating an anniversary or birthday, and going to sleep at night. And there are prayers for the more profound occurrences in life—love and marriage, pregnancy and childbirth, illness, loss, and death.

Rabbi Levy’s words, imbued with grace and empathy, touch on the entire range of human experience. Many of us will recognize ourselves in her prayers and stories and will be comforted by them, as well as challenged and uplifted. Perhaps most important, they are stepping-stones for us to go on and create our own prayers, to find meaning in our own lives, and to begin or renew our own relationships with God.

I bought this book during one of the most trying times of my life, after reading some of Rabbi Levy's prayers online. It is wonderful reading and great to have in your home for all life events.

5 out of 5 stars a very modern psalmist...........2007-03-15

Unquestionably one of my favorite books of prayer poetry. contemporary. contemplative. resonates with all ages. excellent readings when doing pastoral care with others or when just spending quiet time alone.

2 out of 5 stars Not very helpful.......2005-07-15

I did like the author's "organization"-use of categories, so one could access the "appropriate" prayer--However, the prayers themselves were for the most part uninspired and often repetitive. I was hoping to use this book as a source for opening prayers to start meetings at our synagogue, but only a few are "usable." I think I could write better prayers myself.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book........2003-08-21

I am a Chaplain at a Children's Hospital, and I have found this book to be an extremely useful resource for working with parents.

5 out of 5 stars A woman who speaks from her heart.......2003-07-14

Rabbi Naomi Levy encourages the expression of personal prayers to God. This book is filled with her own prayer offerings on general subjects like birth, marriage, sexuality, divorce as well as specific subjects like "A Prayer for rekindling passion" and "A prayer during labor." The most fascinating parts of this book for me were Rabbi Levy's anecdotes--stories about her congregants faith issues and her own family life. Rabbi Levy talks about her own faltering faith in God when her father was murdered and when her daughter was diagnosed with disabilities. She writes with a deep sense of openness and compassion.

Rabbi Levy encourages us to write personal prayers that not only ask for help but also thank God. This practice furthers appreciation for the gifts in our life and in the world.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but flawed...........2006-05-12

Stott gives us a level-headed, comprehensive exposition of what it means to be a present-day Christian, with some chapters that are dedicated to pulpit ministers. It would be difficult to find a book that had less faults, but the faults of this book are pretty big.

There's nothing wrong with the doctrine of the book--unless you, like me, have no sympathy for Calvinism (which makes a couple of brief appearances in the form of assertions of human depravity)--it's the writing. While Stott writes with extraordinary clarity, he also is so careful in this book to make his case with calmness and generosity that the finished product is bland. The language he uses is uninspired, uninspiring, and unimaginative.

So Stott makes a good case; it's just that the book is uninviting.

5 out of 5 stars A Book of Profound Importance.......2003-05-23

John Stott has made a most profound statement in this book - calling God's Church to the act of "Double Listening", or continuing to listen to the Bible as well as the culture, to apply Biblical principles to living in the present age, and to reach out with integrity to the world in God's name.

This book should be second only to the Bible on the reading list of every Christian!

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2001-04-30

This book is the first book by John Stott I have read and I found it very readable and profound at the same time. It challenged a lot of my attitudes about Christians and the world and really made me think about how I can live in the world without compromising my faith in Jesus. I did not agree with everything in the book, but it was definitely well-thought out and well-argued. I am looking forward to reading other books by Stott.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2000-03-30

I highly recommend this book for two reasons. First, this book underscores the important of the Christian world view in contemporary times. Stott is very methodical at outlining the relevancy and importance of theological and historical issues (such as the resurrection) to our contemporary world. He does this without diluting historic Christianity. Secondly, this book reaffirmed my faith in Jesus Christ.

5 out of 5 stars Stott is readable and clear yet deep and challenging.......1998-09-29

I have used this book as the centerpeiece of a small group discussion that I do each year for the past 5 years. It is a great book for covering the basics of the Christian life. Stott does a superb job of speaking to the issues that face Christians in the modern context by showing the relevance of scripture without losing substance. The book not only gives you plenty to think about, but also opens up doors of discussion in many areas.

Book Description

David was to be the future king of Israel. And yet, as you’ll see firsthand in this compelling Bible study, the journey to that goal was filled with dangers, delays, and difficulties.

Just like David, every man has a dream of who he wants to become. But getting there is a different story. Hardships and losses can destroy the faith–and even the life–of a lesser man.

Many men fail to realize their dreams because they choose comfort over character, image over substance, and escape over endurance. But a man who knows how to embrace hardship and learn to mine it for God’s purposes will see his godly dreams come true.

Hardships are inevitable. Embracing them is a choice. God’s dream for you is at stake. And Being God’s Man…in Tough Times will equip you to overcome life’s difficulties in the power and wisdom of God.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-04-24

As a Catholic, I have enjoyed reading Marva J. Dawn's book "Reaching out without Dumbing Down" as well as this book. Her theology is close to ours in so many ways.

2 out of 5 stars Great for Corporate Worship. Bad for True Worship.......2005-01-04

A Royal Waste of Time is another character sketch on "how to do" Worship. Although, highly insightful on Corporate Worship, Dawn misses the mark on true Biblical Worship. She is blur of many authors today who are trying to "fix" Worship instead of doing Worship - just another slant on how to create a corporate worship environment.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Singing.......2003-11-11

Those who have read anything by Marva Dawn will love "A Royal 'Waste' of Time." Those who aren't familiar with her work are in for a book that is very compelling and challenging. This book isn't merely about worship singing; it is about being a church community centered on the worship of an Infinite God. The book articulates a missional ecclesiology focused on biblical worship that engages the world.

5 out of 5 stars "A Royal Waste" is a great investment of your time.......2001-07-31

This book is very helpful in understanding and interpreting our postmodern culture as it impacts worship. The author describes God as our "Infinite Center", and worship as "immersed participation in all the fullness of God's splendor." She emphasizes the need to "be Church" to our culture. The author also deals candidly with many of the music issues affecting worship today, especially the "traditional" versus "contemporary" struggles, and worship and evangelism issues. While many authors offer practical suggestions for "what works," she gets to deeper levels, reminding us that worship is not a matter of taste, that evangelism itself should not "drive" what happens in worship, that we cannot sacrifice substance for style. Throughout the book, she reminds the reader that she is not seeking to provide answers for "being church" in our culture, but she invites us to ask better questions about the meaning and purposes of worship in postmodern times, and how our worship practices form us to be God's people. Reading this book is definitely not a waste of time!
