Wonderful, but be aware: It's without tabs...........2007-10-09
I grew up with this dictionary- it was the only one my father (who has a Master's in English) reached for. I was excited to see it in Wal-Mart and promptly purchased one, as my family didn't have a dictionary. My husband came home and said, "Why didn't you buy it from Amazon-it would've been a lot cheaper!" I returned the first one to Wal-Mart and bought this from Amazon. It's the same thing, except it doesn't have tabs at the side like the one at Wal-Mart does. I REALLY find them useful so that I don't have to open it and go leafing through it just to get to the letter section that I would like to search through. Keep this in mind when you order. I think I would return this if it wasn't a hassle and pay the extra $ to have the tabs....
IRC Section 529.......2007-09-16
Since I am an international student studying in the United States, my perspective is slightly different from those of other reviewers. If you are studying for standardized tests such as SAT or GRE, this is the ultimate authority you should refer to whenever you feel unsure on the exact meaning of vocabularies you encounter in past administrated tests. If you practice on questions on analogy for awhile, for example, you would discover that the ETS (Educational Testing Services), the maker of GRE and SAT, also relies intensively, although not thoroughly, on Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary definitions to design their questions. Only by referring to the MW can you truly understand why certain answer choice is correct, while others are not.
As a bonus, you also have exclusive rights to send inquires on difficult words to MW resourceful editors, a service I find extremely helpful. Although responses are slow (because of, surprisingly, numerous projects in Merriam-Webster Corporation), you will generally receive the most authoritative answers from the brightest people on the planet. As an ESL learner, I am deeply obsessed with the flexibility, inherent logic, and beauty of English language; all introduced by this enlightening tome.
This book does NOT contain a CD-ROM........2007-09-08
After two unsuccessful attempts to get a CD-ROM with this book, I found the correct dictionary to order. It is Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition thumb-notched with Win/Mac CD-ROM and Online Subscription. If you search for Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, this book does not display. Amazon was very cooperative in returning both versions of this book they sent me (without any charges to return them).
Since there is another version of this book that indicates "Book Only," I made an incorrect assumption that this version had the CD-ROM. I am not really sure what the difference is between the "Book Only" version and this version.
A favourable lexicon for the parsimonius consumer.......2007-08-12
A compendium of 225,000 definitions advances itself as an uncommonly intimidating treatise but, lo, I garnered the tenacity to venture forth on an arduous quest of nigh incomprehensible magnitude. My pursuit of rhetorical erudition was both prolonged and tortuous. Indeed, I must yield that the whimsy of surrender infrequently manifested itself as an alluring courtesan of nectareous temptation. Nevertheless, my resolve was but consolidated when I observed a distention in the radius of my parlance. Indeed, I can affirm without recourse to fallacy that the juncture of my undertakings expeditiously culminated prior to the desistance of the tertiary synodic month.
This exhaustive scholastic glossary of the English idiom was most appeasing to my propensity for the conglomerative acquisition of wisdom (although Doreen has experienced sufficient discombublation as to articulate the apprehension that my manner of discourse is presently akin to that of a bovine sphincter).
A helpful refrence book that contains more than defintions.......2007-08-04
I have been using this dictionary for many years. I have gone through a few editions. There are features that this dictionary that The New Oxford American Dictionary, Second Edition does not contain. First of all, the thumb tabs are quite helpful and time saving. Next, would be the word origins, country and languages when applicable, and year that it actually became a word. Followed by the pronunciation keys and parts of speech. In some cases, they also have word variations.
The only reason that I had bought the Oxford one was because this dictionary has words missing that I feel should be included. If a larger more updated version of this becomes available, I will be happy to purchase it.

After wrongly accusing a boy--an African American boyof stealing his brother's jacket, Phil--a white boy--has some hard thinking to do. And a tough question for his mom: "How come you never told me I was prejudiced?" This seemingly small school incident turns into a painful, but ultimately satisfying, learning opportunity for the sixth grader, as he explores the myriad influences in his life and the way his thought patterns have formed... and finds a new friend in the process. The intellectual evolution Phil goes through may be somewhat facile for a child his age, but Andrew Clements's message will undoubtedly hit home for many readers. This is exactly the kind of situation that arises every day in schools (and offices and buses) all over the world. Clements is the author of many highly acclaimed children's books, including The Janitor's Boy and Frindle. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Thief!
When Phil sees another kid wearing his brother's jacket, he assumes the jacket was stolen. It turns out he was wrong, and Phil has to ask himself the question: Would he have made the same assumption if the boy wearing the jacket hadn't been African American? And that question leads to others that reveal some unsettling truths about Phil's neighborhood, his family, and even himself.
Download Description
"Phil is on a mission. His absentminded little brother forgot his lunch money. All kinds of thoughts are running through Phil's mind as he searches for Jimmy in the throngs of fourth and fifth graders crowding the school hallway:...if I'm late for math today, then I might not be allowed to take the test -- and then I could flunk math! I might even flunk sixth grade and get left back! Then Phil spots Jimmy's one-of-a-kind jacket and rushes to the corner of the hallway. Except the person wearing it isn't his brother; it's some black kid Phil's never seen before -- wearing Jimmy's jacket! Phil makes an accusation, tempers flare, and both kids wind up in the principal's office. How will Phil react when he finds out how Daniel came to be the owner of this unique jacket? Will Daniel be able to forgive Phil for an accusation that was based on racial prejudice? What will each boy learn about the other, and most important, about himself? "

Unintentional Racism.......2007-05-31
Phil, a sixth-grader, is running late. He is trying to find his little brother, who forgot his lunch money, before class starts. When he runs down the hall, he sees the back of his brother's jacket, but when he grabs it, it is not his brother wearing it. It is a black kid who Phil accuses of stealing his brother's unique jacket.
The two boys are sent to the principal's office to sort out their argument, and there they find out that the jacket the black boy, Daniel, is wearing is the one that used to belong to Phil's brother. Phil's mother gave the jacket to her cleaning lady and she gave the jacket to her grandson, Daniel. When Daniel finds out that the jacket was given to his grandmother by Phil's mother, he is angry and throws it on the ground.
This incident starts a journey of self-discovery for Phil, who is suddenly very conscious of white and black. He wonders if he would have reacted the same way if Daniel had been white, and he worries that he might be prejudiced without even realizing it. He journey takes him to Daniel's house where he goes to return the jacket and apologize, and he is surprised by what he finds out about black neighborhoods and about himself.
I liked how Phil was so distraught about the thought that he might be prejudiced, even though his parents kept telling him that it was no big deal. It was sad, though, to read about a kid going through a kind of crisis like Phil and not having anyone to help him out.
Underwhelming.......2007-04-12
Phil sees a kid with his brother's jacket on and accuses the younger boy of stealing it. It turns out that Phil's mother gave it to her cleaning lady who gave it to her grandson (the kid).
Phil then freaks out and thinks he thought the jacket was stolen because the kid was African-American (even though it was weird, because it was a fairly distinctive Italian jacket, so the race card seems a bit forced in this case).
It deals with the issues well for the intended age range, but I wanted a little more character development-- for Clements, it left me a bit underwhelmed.
The Jacket is a cool book.......2006-12-07
it was a pretty good book. But, I think the story could have used some action in it.
This review was provided by 10 year old my son.
Missing Jacket?.......2006-06-05
One of the main reasons I picked this book is because Andrew Clements is a good author. I thought this book would be like his other books, but it wasn't. I never knew someone could write an 86 page book about a jacket. Phil accuses a kid that he stole his jacket. After a series of events the misunderstanding is revealed. I would recommend this book if you like to collect jackets and think their cool. Otherwise I would not recommend this book.
Derek's Review.......2005-10-28
This story is about a boy named Phil. Phil is white and when he sees a black boy, Daniel wearing his brother's jacket, he assumes that it has been stolen. This causes a fight between Phil and Daniel, and a lot of hard feelings, because Daniel did not steal the jacket. Both of the boys end up in the principal's office and Daniel threw the jacket down and said, "Fine, you can have it." Phil left the jacket there, and the Principal hung the jacket up on a hook. The jacket was given to Daniel by his grandma, who is the cleaning lady at Phil's house. Phil feels very crappy after this. He didn't know that his mom gave the jacket to Daniel's grandma. But what he feels really bad about is getting mad at Daniel. He realizes that he is prejudiced and that bothers him. He solves the problem by sneaking into the Principal's office and takes the jacket. On the weekend, he runs over to Daniel's house in the poor part of town, with the jacket. He felt a little scared there, so he ran to Daniel's house to return the jacket and apologize. Over time, the two boys become friends.
Phil realized he was prejudiced in this book. I think some people are prejudiced and they don't even realize it. Where I live, there are prejudiced people who call each other bad names because of their race or skin color.
I would recommend this book to other kids who want to learn about how not to judge people by their color or where they live.

Customer Reviews:
Why are you reading this itstead of buying the book?.......2006-03-23
This book is bound with a split hardback/softback cover, so if you appreciate design -- which I assume you do since you're considering a compilation of book designs -- the book is worth buying for this odd cover arrangement alone.
FUN COVERS.......2006-01-26
This an excellent ,colorful book with very useful and informative comments, they are also humorous.Kidd mentions that he shows failed designs when he lectures to show that even a successful designer has failures.Unfortunately,in my opinion, the jacket for this volume falls in this category, its clever but not practical.because the cover is split in two parts its an irritation to hold and eventually the cover will be bent when laying down or storing in shelf.Still a must have in this genre. Now how about a Susan Mitchell collection?
ps.i followed my advice and bought the hardcover .Amazing its even more unwieldy, the cover is half hard and half soft, yikes!I ended up buying the soft cover to keep and treat it very carefully ,was that the point of this nutty design?I guess this cover will enter the hall of fame and certainly will be a collectors item if its never opened.Argghh!!!
Excellent book on the process of graphic design........2006-01-16
I highly recommend this book to any graphic designer. He details nearly every cover design, and its great to hear the back story, and see preliminary designs and alternate final designs. Ironically, my only complaint about the book is its cover. I have the paperback edition, the cover only covers half of the book, and this makes flipping through the pages kind of unwieldy. The cuteness of this cover design wears off quickly. It will be interesting to see how he rates this cover in the sequel to this book in 20 years.
Inspirational.......2006-01-11
Chip Kidd is one of those people who makes me think about the work that I do, and inspires me to try to be more creative. Some design lends itself to stealing and there is a tendency to try to emulate styles, but you can't do that with Kidd's work because it is the idea itself which is so fantastic. He manages to find a perfect way to complement the work of the author and create an ideal package. While his work doesn't conform to any particular style, I find that I can easily spot Kidd's covers on a crowded bookstore shelf. (Sometimes his colleague Carol Devine Carson can fake me out with a well designed spine, but I can pretty reliably pick out a "Kidd" 90% of the time. I find that I sometimes buy books on the strengths of his covers alone.)
Kidd makes me try to expand the way I think about what I'm trying to say, and for that reason, this book will be a frequent reference.
Stunning.......2005-11-21
Wow. This book - much like Chip Kidd's design work - is simply stunning. Every page is engaging.
Fortunately, Chip Kidd happens to be a very good writer. There is no ego here, Kidd keeps a sense of humor throughout.
This is a beautiful book for every designer to add to their library. My one suggestion would be to spend a few extra bucks for the hardcover edition...

Jackets-For Work & Play.......2007-05-15
Don't get discouraged by the unattractive yarns used in the pictures. Look at the design and construction. I have plans to knit a couple of the patterns, which I'm sure will be quite satisfactory when using more pleasing yarns.
great styles.......2007-05-04
I love this book. It is hard to know which jacket to try first. The styles should appeal to a broad range of ages.
a nice jacket mix.......2007-01-10
I've purchased quite a few of the xrx 'best of' or 'knitter's dozen' books. It's so much easier than sorting through all my back issues of Knitter's. I love the mix of styles and techniques, and the fact that they've 're-knit' some of the older patterns with new [available]yarns. I do wish they would include the original publication info. And it would be nice if the index included thumbnail pix of the projects.
Another Hit by Knitter's.......2006-11-22
If you're a pattern fanatic like I am, this book is a must. Knitter's always has some of the greatest designs and they do not disappoint with this book. While most of the patterns are above beginner level, they shouldn't be considered to be off limits for beginners. It's a perfect inspiration and starting point for new knitters who would like to take the plunge into something other than scarves. Basic jacket structures helps new knitters understand how they are put together and removes some of the scary mystery. Intermediate knitters will enjoy it because of the intriguing designs and advanced knitters will find it enjoyable because the patterns are adaptable to personal creativity. The pattern/color combinations and designs add zing for everyone.
My Review.......2006-11-05
Patterns in this book should appeal to a variety of tastes. Jackets are attractive, patterns well written and easy to follow. A good addition to a knitter's library.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Tailoring Reference.......2007-09-29
I agree with everyone's opinions here and confirm that this book has the same content in the Singer Tailoring book that is part of the useful Singer Sewing Reference Lirary series published in 1988 by Cy DeCosse Inc. The table of content are a spot-on-match to the Singer original as are the clear photos using contrasting thread for clarity.
The explantions of using fusible interfacing (which tailoring purist in the past would turn their nose up at as being low class and cheap) and machine stitching instead of pad-stitiching, both of which are found in today's expensive Armani clothes, are very helpful.
I have just about every tailoring book published, including the Adele Margolis, Roberto Cabrera and Stanley Hostek classics, but this is the book I reach for often.
Learned a lot from this one!.......2007-08-10
This book is great, as long as you are an experienced seamstress [sorry for the possible sexist misunderstanding]. Really great tips and hints for someone who has significant experience with sewing and/or tailoring. Wonderful photos!
comprehensive illustrated tailoring guide.......2007-05-16
This is a fully illustrated guide to the three main methods of tailoring: custom tailoring done by hand, machine tailoring, and tailoring using fusible interfacing. The book is quite comprehensive, covering the entire process of making a tailored jacket from selecting the materials, including a detailed section on different types of interfacings, through fitting the pattern, cutting and marking, and all steps of construction for the three methods. There is an illustrated guide to the tools used in tailoring, detailed instructions for several kinds of pockets including patch pockets, lined patch pockets, welt pockets, single welt pockets and welt pockets with flaps, and a section on bound buttonholes. Linings are also covered, including hand installation of linings, machine installation of linings, partial linings, and how to make partial or full linings for an unlined jacket pattern. The book focuses on jackets with notched collars, explaining that these require the most tailoring, but shawl collars are also covered. Other types of collars are not specifically addressed.
The book is clear and comprehensive, and a great choice for anyone wishing to learn tailoring. I do have a few criticisms. Some things are explained in great detail, such as the pockets and a section on threads, equipment and techniques for hand sewing. Some others are not and omit a few details that would have been helpful. For instance, the book explains that taping the front is done in custom tailoring but not necessary in machine or fusible tailoring, and it clearly explains how to tape the front step by step and with full color photo illustration. It doesn't explain why taping the front is important or what it does. I found out courtesy of one of Claire Schaeffer's couture patterns for Vogue that taping the front weights it so that the fronts of the jacket hang perpendicular to the floor even when the jacket is open instead of slanting. The book mentions jump pleats in the lining section but doesn't explain how to form one. There is a section comparing the three methods and examples of how one might use a combination of methods, but it doesn't really explain the pros and cons of each method. The author also seems to have a few personal biases, such as recommending against silk as a lining material because it can get water stains under the arms.
Overall it is a very good guide but I would recommend supplementing it with other books if you really want to get into the subject.
Good for jackets.......2007-04-05
The book is well written and has good illustrations. It offers machine stitching alternatives to the hand pad stitching, which may be of use to women who are tailoring their own jackets but do not have the time to sit and do the stitching by hand. This machine stitched version is the only part that I might consider using as an alternative to the hand stitching. I am not a fan of iron-on interfacing and would not use it in a tailored jacket, but I know someone might and the book shows how it can be used to give a decent look to a tailored jacket.
I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to tailor a jacket. I still prefer Adele Margolis and Ethel Wyllie as my references for tailoring, but this is a good updated version with easy to follow instructions, especially for someone who has never tailored a jacket.
Lots of pictures.......2007-03-17
This is a really good book on tailoring jackets. I'm a person who needs to see it, and this book has "400 how-to photographs" that do a good job of giving close up photos of exactly what is being described. This book is certianlly worth adding to a sewing library.

Customer Reviews:
Classic, not Cheesy.......2006-11-22
I love this book. The jackets are updated classics, tailored and elegant without being cheap and cheesy looking. Super for the knitter wanting to create chic garments.
Classic patterns are refreshing but be cautious of errors.......2003-12-03
It's tough to find knitting patterns for sweaters with classic "jacket-like" lines. Vintage knitting patterns come close (e.g. the recent "Vintage Knits" book), but many vintage patterns were designed for much smaller sizes, say up to a size 34. The sweaters in the book are really beautiful, and the directions are for the most part clear, although not really meant for the beginning knitter. Most of the patterns are worked on small needles, so each sweater will take considerable time for the average busy person. There is a reference section at the back of the book which summarizes the various stitch patterns, which is helpful. However, there are numerous errors in the book that can result in disaster (I learned this the hard and painful way). XRX books is happy to send or email corrections (almost every sweater contains errors), and hopefully the changes will appear in subsequent editions to the book. I would recommend this book if you love the patterns, but would make sure that you call the company for corrections before starting a project.
Female lawyer plans to wear these to the office!.......2003-03-21
I'm thrilled with this book! I'm so sick of bulky sweaters I can only wear on the weekend. I can't wait to make several of these jackets, which with a shell and a skirt or pair of pants, will look terrific in the office. I have just taken up knitting again after 30 years, and I don't want to waste my time with mittens. I have already ordered the yarn for several jackets, and my daughter is complaining because her stuff was put on hold! Don't be intimidated by the ratings - like I said, I have taken up knitting again after 30 years, and the first jacket I am making is rated advanced. But there are no complicated charts to follow, everything is pretty straightforward. I am confident I can make any of these jackets - and I would rate my skills at intermediate. Although I found the colors used for the jackets in the photographs kind of boring (I'm a lawyer, I'm not dead!) you can easily jazz up some of the colors.
Basically, I was looking for a book that would allow me to recreate St. John's knits for the office. Putting a simple pull-up skirt with these jackets does it, I think. And I can get the colors I really want, and the price will be 1/10 the price of St. John!
Classy collection of sweaters for meetings or the office.......2003-03-15
While much of the fun of knitting is making colorful, comfortable clothing for relaxation, there are times when a knitter needs to look "presentable." "Jackets" is a terrific resource for any knitter who wants to look professional while enjoying the sense of accomplishment and individuality that a handknit garment can bring.
This book provides 21 patterns of office suitable cardigans and Channel style jackets, all of which would look as polished as a blazer or a suit jacket. The looks are sharp but traditional enough not to go out of style quickly. Each pattern runs 4 to 6 pages with several photo angles and detailed instructions. The end of the book features a section on finishing tips which is most appropriate given the tailored tone of most of the sweaters.
For those of you who can thumb through the book before ordering, here are some details that may be helpful:
1. Colorwise, there are 14 solid color jackets and 7 multicolor slip stitch patterns. The multi-colors are mostly tweedy looks. Most of the solid color sweaters are knit is stitches other that stockingnette - twills, nubby textures and such. There is only one lace project.
2. The writer/editors rate one sweater as easy; two as "easy plus"; fifteen as intermediate; and three as advanced.
3. The yarn weights are on the light side - one in sport weight; nine in DK weight; nine in worsted weight and two in bulky. Also, this book employees Knitter's Magazine's new generic yarn requirements system (with only small print notations of the specific yarn used in the model jacket).
4. The needles involved are also on the small side - four sweaters on US size 3; four on US size 4; two on US size 5; four on US size 6; six on US size 7; and one on US size 10. As one knitter who is getting pretty tired of the bulky look, this is one of the best part of the book IMHO.
In summary; a great book for professionals who've had to keep their knitting in the closet or the knitters who never know what to make to the young woman lawyer in the family.
I love it!.......2003-03-14
If you like classic styling with attention to detail, you'll like the designs in this book. These jackets can go to the office, to meetings, and out to dinner -- you'll look good anywhere.
The knitted fabrics that Jean creates in her designs are stunning. More importantly, the avid knitter will want to use her own creativity with texture and color to bring to these designs to make her own one-of-a-kind jacket.
These designs are not for anyone looking for a quick project on large needles. However, the stitches used lend themselves to the mesmerizing rhythm that soothes so many of us as we knit. And the time is well worth the effort.
My only problem is deciding which one to make first!

Nice, but a bit toooo simple for an advance knitter..........2007-04-26
I liked only two or three designs but not enough to serious considering making any. The reason is the designs are indeed too simple for me and didn't appeal to me. However, the jackets are modern and flatering and also femenine. The book title is a perfect description for its contents. If you are a begginer or simply don't like to bother with complex designs, this book is for you. There are a couple of dusters that knit in US 17 and US 35 size needle, so this are great night coats that won't take forever to knit and people will turn around when you walk into a place.
There is only one pattern with cables in it, but like I said, it didn't appeal to me, as I like more complex designs. NOt for me, but I can see how this will be a perfect fit for most knitters.
Knitting Simple Jackets.......2007-02-16
I was impressed, and plan on making one or two of the patterns. I was particularly thrilled with the fact that it doesn't specify a particular yarn, but simply gives you the weight and the gauge. This is good for knitters whose cupboards are overflowing with a yarn stash. I wish all patterns did this.
Another Winning Knitting Book by Marilyn Saitz Cohen.......2007-02-13
I just love Ms. Cohen's newest knitting book, "Knitting Simple Jackets". The easy to understand directions, beautiful selection of jackets, and suggested yarns that compliment the designs makes this book perfect not only for the experienced knitter but simple enough for the beginner. I have also started knitting the "Cofy Car Coat". In addition, I highly recommend Ms.Cohen's 1st book, "Knitting Simple Sweaters from Luxurious Yarns".
Elegant Designs Made Simple.......2007-02-12
I love this book because the instructions and diagrams are so clear and easy to follow. The photographs are so close up that you can see the details front and back and see how the jacket will look when finished. The styles are basic and timeless and quite a few of the jackets can be knit very quickly with large needles. I especially love the classic Chanel style, the hooded jackets and the cape. I would also recommend Ms. Cohen's previous book, "Knitting Simple Sweaters From Luxurious Yarns."

Easy projects and nicely pictured. I was looking for something a little more challenging.

Book Description
This new comprehensive look at the evolution of the American flight jacket from World War I to Desert Storm addresses not only the types worn, but focuses primarily on the art and adornment applied to the jackets. The most colorful and creative period for flight jacket art was World War II, and it is this era that comprises a major portion of this book. Additionally, many of the pieces are attributed to the original owner with biographical information, contemporary photographs of the individual, and the aircraft on which he served. Personal combat accounts are also included. Also covered are other military jackets used by flyers. American Flight Jackets** was compiled over a number of years by Jon Maguire and John Conway. The authors became friends through a mutual passion for aviation history and collecting. This book provides a valuable reference for historians and collectors alike, and includes over 1,000 photographs.

Excellent pictorial monograph.......2003-03-13
If you are interested in flight jackets, their design, styles and art work, then this book is for you. There are literally hundreds of colour and black and white photographs of aviator leather jackets. World War Two jackets are covered in detail as are Korean and Vietnam period flight jackets. The book is well set out, has large high resolution photographs and is a well constructed hardcover. The only fault I could find with the book is that in many of the photographs it fails to identify the jacket type and specification. It also does not deal with jacket construction or design. As with many of Maguire's books it has excellent reference photographs and information on who used or wore the artical in question, but fails to provide detailed information on the item other than the basics. Still, it is worthwhile addition to a library, although the book is expensive.
WWWWWWW OOOOOOOO WWWWWWW !.......2000-09-26
Perhaps I enjoyed this book so much because of the fact that it's main focus is the WWII era of flight jackets and that is my favorite area as well. If you want historical jackets (KOREA AND WWII), get this book, but if you want just modern jackets then shop elsewhere.
If I had to be picky about the book, I would have to say that there were too many blood chits on jackets pictured and not enough pin-up work, but that's only if I had to be picky. The authors did their homework for this book as they don't just give you tons of photographs (BY THE WAY, THERE ARE TONS OF PHOTOGRAPHS) but also chronicle the jacket's history and when possible, the owner's history as well.
Fantastic layouts as the information is presented in a very professional and orderly way. They break down the jackets by theater as there's a section on the CBI theater, the European Theater, Korean theater, etc. Good paper and a nice sized book.
A bit on the pricey side but I still got it and I would still recommend it to the hardcore fan of the subject. May be too much cash for the casual fan.

Animals in Winter (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1)
ASIN: 0688045871 |
Book Description
Rhyme follows rhyme as layer after layer of winter clothing ("bunchy and hot, wrinkled a lot, stiff in the knee, and too big for me!") is first put on and then taken off to the relief of the child bundled inside. Clever rebuses and jaunty illustrations make The Jacket I Wear in the Snow especially fun for prereaders and new readers.
Customer Reviews:
Great Rebus Book.......2007-02-22
I use this as part of my Winter preschool curriculum, but the rebus format is a little tedious to read aloud. Kids like it though.
Bundling Up in Snowy Weather.......2007-01-14
I had the pleasure of reading this in a big book to my 1st graders in Oxnard this Friday. The week started at 95 in my room, plummeting to 45 by Friday.Recovering from flu and catching another horrible cold I feel train wrecked with our strange CA coastal mix of seasons daily.
So as it is January it seemed perfect to pull out this book and pretend the season of winter. After all we were drawing snowmen. Our heater had never worked and the District was fixing it so we were able to chill a little to set the scene. I've used this wonderful book and Reading Rainbow show of the book for years in my literacy instruction. It is an old friend I recall it in 1989. The book is a gem slowly using a rather dear pattern format to layer by layer describe the clothing put on to go out to play in the snow. Once out Mom comes to the rescue and returns the little girl home to remove the layers after a sled fall. Typical winter day.
For my 2nd language learners who need support with distinctions like mittens and gloves, scarf and stocking cap..it really is nice reinforcing these constructs as well as introducing "these are " and "this is" something they are sorting in their English acquisition. What I like is the tone. It has the tone of a winter experience. "This is the sweater all itchy and warm..." It has a lovely way of using choice adjectives, another 2nd language "right on". In the place of key words are pictures too so as an audience they love recalling the clothing words to say....and I make our own little class made book version of this a center recreation of the story where they draw each concept the following week as a part of what they do while I reading group. It's quite a nice story for this, a kind of re-tell. I have a friend who reads the story and dresses the kids in each layer taking their pictures as she goes and using digital printouts creates a superb book as they pull on the layers and see themselves become snow ready because she feels these children live in such a warm place here they'll never know rubber boots and long underwear. You know what, my daughter is 17 almost 18, and has never had a pair of boots or seen snow. So she is right. This book reminds me of how fast her childhood went by as this was really a book I got for my Sylvia to celebrate winter when years ago we watched Reading Rainbow together and celebrated good stories together at 3 she adored this. Snuggle up with a hot chocolate and a great pattern book with your little one. yum.
Little Kids in the Snow.......2003-03-27
Shirley Neitzel wrote a book called The Jacket I Wear In The Snow. The main character of the story is a little boy who tells a story. This story takes place at the little boy's house and it is in the winter. The book talks about the little boy and all the clothes that he has to wear outside. This book is different because it talks about clothes and replaces words with pictures of clothes, and it is in poem form. I think that the story is funny because it rhymes a lot. The illustrations are just like normal clothes, with a very nice tint drawn in with colored pencils. Overall, I really liked this story because it represents little kids and how they have to wear a lot of clothes outside, and that they cry sometimes when they get cold.
book fan from oklahoma.......2001-01-26
This book is excellent for children. Through all of the articles of clothing that he puts on, they can begin to count, a good math lesson. They can also participate while you read the story aloud through the pictures of the clothes instead of the word. I loved this book and am adding it to my collection.
