First serialized in Newtype USA, Angelic Days takes the angst-ridden Eva pilots and sets them in the lighter, brighter world of high school. With comedy, action and romance (plus a fair share of fan service), Angelic Days is the manga NGE fans have been waiting for!
Customer Reviews:
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days, Volume 4.......2007-06-14
It's very good I think they could make a new anime of this manga
As interesting as the 3rd volume compared to the 1st..........2007-03-16
First off, I've enjoyed this manga since day one. Mainly cause I'm a huge Evangelion fan but partly because of how the characters are more driven by there feelings for other people than themselves. Second, the art is pretty well drawn, I admit it's lighter than the original manga but it's that way to set the mood. Lastly, if your not into teen love drama's then don't bother with this, ain't enough action to hide all the "love love".
SO! Even though I gave this 4 stars, I highly recommend this series. Not just if your into Evagelion or if you played the game but simply cause its a good read.
Oh and only reason why I gave this volume 4 stars was for how it ended. Don't wanna spoil anything but you'll get what I mean when you finish it.

Book Description
Japan's most controversial anime series is over...but not the manga version of Neon Genesis Evangelion! Series co-creator Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's personal interpretation of the Evangelion characters and story is sure to intrigue new and old fans alike.
In 2015, the "Angels" have returned, and Shinji Ikari, a fourteen year-old child of the new Earth, is forced by his father Gendo--commander of the secret organization NERV--to pilot the monstrous biomechanical weapon called "Evangelion" to match the Angels' fearsome power...
Customer Reviews:
Engaging.......2007-05-25
The short and simple review. If youve read the other volumes this will not disapoint. Continues the manga story and introduces some new insights into the story you dont get from the anime along with some new scenes and information to shed light on ALOT of unanswered questions from the anime. Overall I wish they would fit more on one volume but they all are pretty much standard so cant complain too much. Also a good section on the sound effects and a great article on the New EVA movies coming out from Gainax with alot of information.
Worth The Wait.......2007-05-15
I'd been waiting forever for this latest volume to come out, and it did not disappoint! Shinji experiences more creepy, (to him, at least) yaoi-ish encounters with the mysterious boy, Kaworu, Ryoko remembers her dark past and decides to go against Gendo's will, and Misato and Shinji learn the terrible and horrifying secret behind the first child's identity. Will Shinji ever be able to think of Rei the same way again...?
A great book! Yes wonderful indeed.......2007-05-14
This Manga was great. As it nears the ending of the series it just gets better and better. For those of you who have seen the anime it is very nice to be able to read/see the difference between the manga and the anime. I liked the manga a lot better. It keeps your attention and in the end leaves you wanting more. It was a very enjoyable book!
At Long Last!.......2007-04-12
We who have followed this series have waited a long time for this installment of the manga version of the Evangelion saga. Similarities to the anime are still there, but differences make themselves felt. In some ways, we get a greater view into the psyches of the characters -- what they are thinking and feeling at points in the story. The focus on the relationships between Shinji, Rei, Asuka, and even Kaworu, even as they battle the latest Angel, underplays the action. Oh, yes, and deep secrets of Nerv and the Evangelions are revealed.
The artwork continues to be outstanding, and my anticipation for the next volume grows. To fans of the anime and manga, I hardly need recommend it - to the curious, please give it a reading... but start at the beginning to enjoy it all. Having torn through this volume to see what happened, I will probably reread from the start to enjoy it all again.

Excellent.......2006-03-18
Sadamoto-sensei has produced yet another great volume in this amazing story. It seems to have finally delved into the Psychological aspects of the original storyline, and is beginning to become more deep. I now realize that the 10th volume is finally being developed, and will be released soon. I can't wait!
eva vol.9 rock on!!!!!.......2005-08-14
The evangelion story makes a turn.As Kaworu Nagisa[Tabris]greets Shinji in the ruins of buildings.Kaworu is the 5th child, chosen by SEELE who knows him as Tabris the angel of free will.I reccommend this book to all ANIME fans!!!
Where the differences sock you in the face.......2005-01-31
This is a review for the evangelion manga, vol 9. Because it appears as if Borders is being a little lax about including pictures or information, I'm going to add a little extra information before getting on with the review.
The cover features Kaworu in the foreground, and Asuka in the background. For you who don't know whose those characters are or what they look like, Kaworu is a pretty boy with albino-like features (like Rei.) Asuka is a redheaded teeange girl with blue eyes. In the picture, Asuka appears to be floating upside down with the head of Evanglion unit 02 behind her. She has somewhat of a dazed/hypnotized expression, and is in her plugsuit. Kaworu in sitting with his elbow propped up on his knee, wearing the school uniform, and smiling out at the viewer For those familiar with the anime, he looks somewhat thinner and larger eyed. The main color is red.
This is the blurb that was on the back:
Pride in being an Evangelion pilot-that is the essence of the second Child, Soryu Asuka Langley. But the day she was chosen to be so was the most horrible of her life-and as that truth rises to consume her, Shinji finds a new comrade in the strange, beautiful, and distrubing Kaworu Nagisa. Born on the day of the Second Impact, he has been sent directly for SEELE, which alone knows him by his real name-Tabris, the Angel of Free Will.
This is the volume of Evangelion where the differences between the manga and animation really shines through. Saying too much would ruin the plot, but expect major differences in events- mostly due to the differences in personality that everyone already underwent in earlier books. which is better relies entirely on individual preference- I was displeased, but only because Kaworu is my favorite character and I feel he is no longer anything like the character in the anime. The alternate scenarios used, however, are surprising and enjoyable, and for those who are jadedly anticipating a simple repeat of the anime story, prepare to be stunned. Some huge key changes lie in Kowaru and Shinji's meeting, Asuka's past, and the level of devastation after a certain Angel Attack. An afterword by Carl Gustav Horn does a good job of summarizing and analyzing the what and why of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto changing what he did, as well as drawing connections to a mark twain novella, "The Mysterious stranger.
There is one major annoyance that has nothing to do with the quality of book, but with the author and publisher; reaching deadlines. I bought my manga from another seller because Viz, for some reason, had problems with reliable distribution until more than a month after the initial release date. Borders sold out quickly and could not restock for the longest time. At the same time, the next volume of a manga usually takes around a month to 3 months to be released. I think the time between 8 and 9 was about 5 months. And now according to the book itself, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto hasn't worked on the manga in japan for 8 months. That means it may take as long as a year to two years for the next book to be translated into english. But I guess most diehard Evangelion fans will endure the wait...
Book Description
(Book Jacket Status: Jacketed)
This remarkable new translation of the Nobel Prize-winner’s great masterpiece is a major literary event.
Thomas Mann regarded his monumental retelling of the biblical story of Joseph as his magnum opus. He conceived of the four parts–The Stories of Jacob, Young Joseph, Joseph in Egypt, and Joseph the Provider–as a unified narrative, a “mythological novel” of Joseph’s fall into slavery and his rise to be lord over Egypt. Deploying lavish, persuasive detail, Mann conjures for us the world of patriarchs and pharaohs, the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Palestine, and the universal force of human love in all its beauty, desperation, absurdity, and pain. The result is a brilliant amalgam of humor, emotion, psychological insight, and epic grandeur.
Now the award-winning translator John E. Woods gives us a definitive new English version of Joseph and His Brothers that is worthy of Mann’s achievement, revealing the novel’s exuberant polyphony of ancient and modern voices, a rich music that is by turns elegant, coarse, and sublime.
Customer Reviews:
AN OUTSTANDING BOOK.......2007-07-26
One of the greatest books ever written.
Also the kind of service / support rendered by Amazon, when the first copy did not reach me, was truly touching and amazing. Within a fortnight of not having received the original book sent to me, I had the book finally in my hands ! Great customer service.
Beautiful!.......2007-02-19
The new translation of Joseph and His Brothers is beautiful, as is the novel. Yes, it's long--about 1500 pages--but it's worth all the time it takes to read. Perhaps this isn't the place to start, if you haven't read Mann before, but if you already admire his work, you're going to love this book.
Unsurpassed fiction, in any century!.......2007-01-09
Anyone who has read my Listmania "Escape Mass Market Fiction" knows that I touted this novel (tertrology actually) as having ".... the most exquisite language since Shakespeare". But it is truly beyond that. After 30 years and over 3,000 books read I can affirm that there simply has been no greater work of fiction produced in any century by man or woman. One of the reviewers for the Lowe-Porter translation was dead-on saying you keep wanting to go back and reread the last 20 pages you managed to finish just to savor the experience. Original editions are a little rare and expensive, but, like any treasure, it's rewards are transcendental, and once read, you can consider yourself part of the most esoteric world of the true literati. NOTE-- Beginners who are easily scared off and prefer to sample before committing might want to skip the Preludes and go straight to the main chapters.
Challenging and Sublime.......2006-02-04
For all the great technological magic of our age we suffer the misfortune of living in a time where the depth of hyperbole rends the edge from language leaving us bereft when the time comes to describe something truly remarkable. Thus to say that John Woods' translation of Thomas Mann's Joseph and His Brothers offers readers a gift of almost indescribable value may leave one wondering if I am making a literally true statement or simply wallowing in the common puff of our day. In this case the latter is the case for Mr. Woods' translation of Mann's great opus offers the reader an experience both challenging and sublime.
Readers unfamiliar with Mann's work may feel a sense of vertigo beginning this even more than his other works. Much of the style of narration, unique with its perspective shifting through time, seems almost purposely designed to leave one doubting their footing. Increasing the sense of dread is the books sheer heft, with over 1500 pages of small type and weighing in at almost two and half pounds. Yet those brave souls who resist the temptation to lay down this load in favor of a more easily digested work will come to in the end appreciate the feast to come. Mann's work rests on its own unique rhythm, and once the reader grows acclimated they will surely appreciate both the work and the great skill of Mr. Wood as translator. This series of four novels expounding on the biblical tale of Jacob, his son of Joseph of the famous robe, as well as his brothers, often comes when people engage in the entertaining and fruitless parlor game of determining the greatest literary work of the 20th century. While no single work can claim such a title, the complexity of the work and the Herculean task of translation should be evident that this is only the second instance of its translation into English in the more than 60 years since it first appeared.
Beyond simply outlining the work's subject matter, in many ways it seems written with the express intent of defying further description. With a complex web of interrelated stories, occasionally taking subjects that the bible reflects on for only a sentence and expanded on them for a hundred pages and at the same time seeking to place this seminal tale in its religious, historic, and cultural context, the work often leaves the reader gasping at the audacity of Man's enterprise. Yet almost every one of his efforts comes as a remarkable success, leaving one much to ponder. Indeed, any expectation that one can rush through this work will surely leave you with only a headache and little to show for the effort. Instead, one must take their time and slowly chew on Joseph and His Brother's digesting each piece in turn. Like many great works this one takes effort and diligence, but the reward comes as more than just bragging rights for having read it. Far more, it will offer an often eye opening new perspective and beckon from the book shelf to be taken down again so that you may reread this section or that.
One last point: to end where I began, Mann's attention to detail and word choice often gives pause, making each of us consider the harm done when we rain down words on a subject when a mere drop would do.
no title - first volume of series.......2006-01-23
This isn't really about Joseph and his brothers, but about his father, Jacob. An amazing achievement, taking the bare bones of the biblical story and adding research from Judaism and Egyptian and Near East mythologies and oral histories. Plus Mann went to the land covered in these histories to see it for himself. There is an ironic, slightly satirical tone which surprised me - I thought it would be so religious - not at all. He made everything matter-of-fact and plausible and made the biblical characters come alive as real people, always adding the small details of their way of life then. Jacob seems such a sympathetic man, as Rachel does a woman, but Joseph comes off as a tattle tale, and there is the one line in the bible to support this as in everything of which Mann writes. Such a sad and touching ending to this first book.

Book Description
Imagine a Neon Genesis Evangeliion where choosing the right girl is more important than saving the world! That's the gist of Angelic Days, the hit manga that fans have been waiting for!
Customer Reviews:
Nice series, but..........2006-11-14
The only reason "Angelic Days" has any cachet at all is because of the original anime series that it's based on, "Neon Genesis Evangelion". If you're looking for a manga series to read, start with either the "Eva" manga, or better still, the original anime.
The characters of "Angelic Days" are all from "Eva", but this is an alternate-universe where certain key events haven't happened yet. So the characters have grown-up in nearly a normal setting, except for the existence of NERV and the technology to create the giant robots known as Evangelion. It's hard to say more without divulging spoilers.
Point of fact, the characters of "Days" are taken from a Japan-only video game, which in turn was based on a dream-sequence from an episode of "Eva". Most of the storyline so far read like a stereotypical high school romance manga, which is to say there's nothing really to distinguish it from any other anime story set in a high school... unless you can compare it to the original anime.
I give "Days" as high a rating as I did because I appreciate the fanboy fantasy-premise where the characters are normal boys and girls ("Gee, wouldn't it be neat if Rei were, like, sociable and you could talk to her..."). I'm not sure a random reader would see more in the story than a tangled-tale of high-school hormones set in a sci-fi japanese high school.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Angelic Days, Vol. 2.......2006-10-18
The first volume blew me away, this one just keeps getting better. I am more into the relationship development than the fighting, and this volume keeps giving you more information on the characters. Rei, with a personal side is one thing that I missed in the series and manga that I wanted more of. I am waiting for volume three, so I can reread up to the new volume. They did an outstanding job on this series and if you are an evangelion fan you will not want to miss it.
A good alternative to the anime........2006-08-16
First of all, let me just say I'm completely obsessed with Evangelion. I loved the series, read the manga, and am now waiting impatiently for Angelic Days Vol. 3.
At first, I approached Angelic Days with caution. The artwork doesn't seem that good at first and the mood was a sharp contradiction to that of the original series. However, I soon began enjoying it much more than I expected. The humor is pretty good, the original charaters are present and pretty much unchanged(except for Rei, who has become the exact opposite of the quiet, introspective Rei of the series), and at long last the relationship between Shinji and Asuka has been brought to the forefront.
Not much Eva action has been seen yet- only one battle has been fought- but the story thus far signals much chaos ahead. However, most of the story will probably stay centered on the numerous love triangles that exist between the characters, and I personally have no problem with that.
To all Eva-fans: Read this NOW.
To all critics: Accept it and love it.
Average customer rating:
- Yay! Love Triangles!
- An enjoyable alternative to the mind-numbing series

Yay! Love Triangles!.......2007-01-22
Yeah, this evangelion was a blast to start off, can't wait to finish it. Come on, didn't you wanna know what would it have been like if Asuka didn't come from such a bad background, or if Shinji still had his mom, Yui around? Or if Gendo was more....humane? Or Rei being such a cheery and bright girl, unlike the cold clones that were so loyal to Gendo in the original canon. Or if Asuka and Rei acted like sisterly yet strong rivals for the love of the naive Shinji?
Yeah, you know Shinji becomes the usual guy in such a stereotypical timid/nice guy. The only real thing keeping this story alive is the newly "renovated" relationships. Asuka and Rei interactions really drive this home, Rei is just so cute trying get with Shinji, and Asuka at the same time jealously keeping her off him because she wants Shinji to herself. Everybody has been reintroduced....except for Pen-pen, poor pen-pen.
Well I gave it 5 stars because it's EVANGELION after all. And I've always wanted to see everyone in a happier-normal setting.
An enjoyable alternative to the mind-numbing series.......2006-11-26
As a fan of the original anime, I really enjoy this new take on the story. But a big part of it is how very different it is from the original. Having viewed the deep, depressing series, as well as the movie conclusion, End of Evangelion, it is fun to see the familiar characters thrown into hilarious situations, which usually involve Asuka and Rei fighting over Shinji. The characters are for the most part unchanged, except for Rei, whose giddy personality is the polar opposite of her sad, disinterested appearance in the original.
I'm sure any manga fan will enjoy this, but being familiar with Hideaki Anno's original masterpiece can only help.

A Kinder, Gentler Evangelion.......2007-04-26
Have you ever viewed Gainax's classic anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and wondered "What would it be like if Shinji wasn't such a wimp?" or "What would Rei be like if she were more normal?" If these questions have every crossed your mind or you are an eager fan looking for a zany and somewhat unorthodox take on the landmark series, then unquestionably Fumino Hayashi's Angelic Days will be for you.
As a manga, Angelic Days presents an alternate retelling of the Evangelion story, making use of the same characters, settings, and scenarios that fans of the series would be familiar with, but placing them in a much lighter context. There won't be any long pauses of soul searching and introspection to be found here. Life in Tokyo 3 is about as normal as if can be for young Shinji Ikari. His home life is quiet and uneventful, in part due to the fact that his parents, Gendo and Yui, work for a lab located in the city and are therefore largely unavailable. He has plenty of friends to keep him in and out of trouble, though, including geeky Kensuke, jock-with-a-soft-side Toji, the cool, quiet Kaworu (who fans of the series will recall is the 17th Angel...), and of course, Asuka, Shinji's friend since childhood who takes it upon herself to keep him in line and on time. The routine of eating, sleeping, learning, and having fun goes unbroken until strange dreams of a `giant of light' begin to impact young Shinji in the sleeping hours. While these visions are troubling enough, things get even more complicated when he and Asuka run into (quite literally) a mysterious new transfer student to the class. The arrival of this student, a vibrant, bubbly, and somewhat socially challenged Rei Ayanami, instantly causes ripples in the fabric of routine life that threatens to turn Shinji's world upside down and inside out, and back again. It does not take long before Shinji catches Rei's curious fancy, a reality that draws nothing but surprisingly jealous ire from Asuka, igniting a tense and comical rivalry between to the two girls over our reluctant and somewhat oblivious hero. But Rei's arrival is doing more than just make waves among the children who know her. Her presence marks the beginning of a new `phase' in an experiment perpetrated by the city's scientific community, and Shinji's visions of the giant might be more premonition than adolescent fantasy.
The first volume sets the tone nicely for what is to follow, though admittedly there is very little back-story for readers unfamiliar with the source material. Characters are introduced swiftly and under the assumption that readers know them by heart, which might leave some scratching their heads. But familiarity with the anime will also bring about a few shocks of its own when fans plunge into the volume. While some characters retain much of what made their personalities memorable (like Asuka, minus her apparent hatred for Shinji), others are completely revised. Shinji is no longer the quiet, sullen loner focused only on himself but rather he is happy and smiling, apparently enjoying life as it comes. Perhaps the most surprising change comes with Rei. The silent, crimson-eyed enigma of the series is portrayed now with boisterous energy, so much that any relation to the original character exists in name and look only. The change is not a bad one by any means, and in fact fits will with the overall tone of the story. Angelic Days plays out more like a high school drama/comedy than a sci-fi tale. In fact, aside from a few obvious details like the plug suits and references to NERV, one might be convinced that this has nothing to do with Evangelion at all, save for a few names and faces. Future volumes do, however, appear to promise more direct connections to the source material, including appearances by the Angels and the Evangelion units.
Hayashi's art style is more kinetic and, at times, more chaotic than the iconic artwork of original character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, but in a good way. Hayashi retains the basic feel of the characters while injecting them with personal interpretation and whimsy. This fits the nature of the story well, seeing as Angelic Days serves as a breezy, light-hearted alternative to the grim tale that is its cousin. There is a certain charm in the simplicity here, whether it is the rendering or writing, or just the overall feel that Hayashi invokes in each frame. While Shinji and friends might have induced moments of outrage and anger among viewers of the anime, they come across as much more likable and sympathetic here, helped in part by the softer lines and tones of the artwork.
While the story might lack some details and, at the moment, momentum, there is enough to be found in this first volume of Angelic Days to at the very least pique curiosity. It will be interesting to see where Fumino Hayashi takes it from here and how much of the original story finds its way into the proceedings. Hardcore fans of the original series may find the changes off-setting, and would be better off sticking with the other version of Evangelion in manga form, that being the reinterpretation from Yoshiyuki Sadamoto himself. However, that being said, Angelic Days is also the perfect compliment to Sadamoto's work. Readers eagerly waiting for Sadamoto to release his next volume of the Evangelion manga might want to consider giving this fun romp a look.
The Way It Should Have Been!.......2007-02-19
YESSS! No more whining Shinji or emo Rei! I, along with all other Evangelion fans, are probably jumping for joy. *jump*. In the anime series, a small protion of the final episode relates to a parallel universe where this manga series begins.
The manga Evangelion Angelic Days takes place in New Tokyo 3, where young Shinji Ikari wakes up in a place where the main story of Evangelion starts just with a different atmosphere. On the way to school with his lifelong friend, Ausaka, they bump into a young girl named Rei. Though they get off to a rocky start, what awaits them in the future will test their friendships and their destinies.
Compared to the anime series and manga series that came before it, this is the greatest thing they have released! However the characters have changed a small bit and some of the original storyline was altered just a few times, this series still is unbelievable!!!
Evangelion: Angelic Days Volume 1 gets 5 stars out of 5.
My name is Amone! Adios!
Evangelion Fanbois Only.......2007-01-01
Angelic Days is a spinoff of Neon Genesis Evangelion, using the same characters but placing them in a school-romance setting instead of a post-apocalypic giant robots setting. Several changes include: 2nd Impact never happened, Rei is cheerful instead of emotionless, Misato is their teacher, Shinji's mom's not dead, etc.
This all sounds good in theory but it's not executed very well. Fumino Hayashi's art isn't NEARLY as precise or clean as Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's (original Eva character designer and author of the Evangelion manga) and the story feels rather cliche. Standard romance stuff that you'll see in tons of manga, all with better art and storytelling. The only thing that sets this apart is the use of characters from Eva. This honestly feels more like a watered down doujinshi (japanese amateur fan comic) than an official Gainax work.
For people who just want MOAR EVA, this IS more, it's just not very good. Grab it if you need your fix, but don't be surprised when you're left feeling a little dirty.
For those who haven't seen the original series, I'd say stay away from this.
A must read for Evangelion fans.......2006-07-14
This is a wonderful alternate take on Evangelion. My only regret is I wish the volumes were a little quicker on release, but you can't have everything. ;)
Alterverse Eva.......2006-06-29
I was looking forward to this book as soon as i heard about it. sure Eva is mainly about giant robots and almost nill romance since it wasn't that kind of anime. its nice seeing a contiuation though of the alternate universe pictured in episode 26 even if it doesn't look like it'll have as much humor.
but my review is as followed if you loved eva you're more then likely starving for more eva related material and this does a fairly good job.

The red tent is the place where women gathered during their cycles of birthing, menses, and even illness. Like the conversations and mysteries held within this feminine tent, this sweeping piece of fiction offers an insider's look at the daily life of a biblical sorority of mothers and wives and their one and only daughter, Dinah. Told in the voice of Jacob's daughter Dinah (who only received a glimpse of recognition in the Book of Genesis), we are privy to the fascinating feminine characters who bled within the red tent. In a confiding and poetic voice, Dinah whispers stories of her four mothers, Rachel, Leah, Zilpah, and Bilhah--all wives to Jacob, and each one embodying unique feminine traits. As she reveals these sensual and emotionally charged stories we learn of birthing miracles, slaves, artisans, household gods, and sisterhood secrets. Eventually Dinah delves into her own saga of betrayals, grief, and a call to midwifery.
"Like any sisters who live together and share a husband, my mother and aunties spun a sticky web of loyalties and grudges," Anita Diamant writes in the voice of Dinah. "They traded secrets like bracelets, and these were handed down to me the only surviving girl. They told me things I was too young to hear. They held my face between their hands and made me swear to remember." Remembering women's earthy stories and passionate history is indeed the theme of this magnificent book. In fact, it's been said that The Red Tent is what the Bible might have been had it been written by God's daughters, instead of her sons. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that are about her father, Jacob, and his dozen sons.Told in Dinah's voice, this novel reveals the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood-the world of the red tent. It begins with the story of her mothers-Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah-the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that are to sustain her through a damaged youth, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah's story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate, immediate connection.Deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling with a valuable achievement in modern fiction: a new view of Biblical women's society.

The Red Tent.......2007-10-10
I highly recommend this book to those who are fasinated with Bible stories. It brings to life, a little known person of Biblical times. Along with all of the rest of the persons that we have heard about and read about.
A story for women of all ages!.......2007-10-09
I have a hard time getting into a lot of contemporary literature, but I just LOVED book! I've read it twice -- first in my twenties before I had children and then later in my thirties after having my first child. In my twenties I was enchanted by the first part of Dinah's story -- her childhood and relationships with her various "mothers". Then, later, as a mother I was moved by Dinah's story after giving birth and her bittersweet relationship with her own child. Maybe I'll read it again in another 10 years...
So much more than expected!.......2007-10-07
I donated my first copy of The Red Tent to the Goodwill without having read a single page. Because I'm not one to give to much thought to the bond I share with other women just because we're women, and because I don't have sisters or share a deep connection with many women in my family, I assumed this book was not for me. Years later, however, I decided to give the The Red Tent a shot; and it turned out to be a page-turner.
The Red Tent offers a thought-provoking emotional read . . . An amazing story of strength, love, survival, loyalty, and betrayal. I cared about the characters from beginning to end (regardless of whether I could relate my own experiences to theirs) and found myself so full of sorrow at one point I actually put the book aside and sobbed. Colorful images, beautiful descriptive language, realistic fiction . . . a inarguably well-written novel with immense depth. Highly recommended!
The Red Tent.......2007-10-05
It was an excellent book. I really enjoyed it. It did follow the Bible somewhat but then it is fiction, based on some facts.
Riveting Red Tent!.......2007-10-05
I could not put it down....It gave me the desire to go back and read my bible in a new light, from a woman's point of view! The characters in the bible came to life with their own unique personalities, although I know that the book is a novel and the author is not claiming historical accuracy. This book is a must-read!

New look, a hard cover version for Der Mond!
Stylish, delicate, and consistently edgy, Der Mond collects the color illustrations of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, perhaps the most acclaimed manga and anime artist of all time. The book includes 74 pages of paintings and designs devoted to Neon Genesis Evangelion, plus another 50 pages from The Wings of Honneamise, Nadia--The Secret of Blue Water, Blue Uru, and other works--including Sadamoto's cover to Eric Clapton's 1998 album, Pilgrim.

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's Kaleidoscopic Universe: Der Mond.......2007-01-07
Neon Genesis Evangelion has justly gained its reputation as both the most cherished and the most controversial animé of all time. Audaciously redefining the mecha genre, the saga interweaves its intriguing sci-fi premise and adrenaline-pumping action sequences with a darkly thoughtful exploration of the human condition featuring some of the most contorted personalities ever committed to film (animated or otherwise). In the process, Evangelion yields a formally daring avant-garde achievement, oozing with esoteric symbolism, psychoanalytical allusions, intrepid cinematography and open-ended plot threads.
Although both the original TV series (1995-1996) and the feature-length sequels (1997) have spawned a vast array of peripheral merchandise in the form of countless tie-ins and spin-offs, it is practically impossible to imagine a more inspiring companion to the animations than Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's Der Mond. Sleek, lustrous and often unsettling, this art book exquisitely captures the entire saga's aesthetic. One of Studio Gainax's founders, Sadamoto (b. 1962) is unanimously regarded as one of the most accomplished manga artists and animé character designers ever. Der Mond eloquently confirms these credentials by showcasing over 70 pages of paintings and designs created for Evangelion, as well as a generous selection of works devoted to Gainax's debut production Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Blue Uru and Sadamoto's memorable cover for Eric Clapton's album Pilgrim (1998).
As far as Evangelion is specifically concerned, the book offers a rich gallery of captivating and convincing characters. Their settings, both natural and architectural, are meticulously rendered, with unremitting attention to minute details and subtle nuances. The structural complexity and both textural and chromatic sumptuousness of the Eva biomechanoids is likewise conveyed with passionate care. Der Mond also demonstrates Sadamoto's knack of imagining the characters in roles and contexts external to the logic of the original animé and of placing them in a variety of alternate realities (in much the same way as a "Method" actor would handle his or her role). The images are, at times, so starkly in contrast with the nature of the characters as one has come to know them through the animé that they may well bring a smile of amusement to the viewer's face. Visions of Misato playfully climbing a Honda bike or of Rei and Asuka affectionately interacting with each other, for instance, appear so gloriously "out of character" as to verge on the hilarious. However, such images are perfectly consonant with the existential message conveyed by both the closing portion of of the TV show and by the movie End of Evangelion, where it is proposed that the world is what we make of it and that parallel visions of reality might therefore coexist. The variety of moods conveyed by Der Mond's pictures results from its inclusion not only of character sketches and model sheets explicitly created for the animé but also of ancillary drawings and paintings executed for the Evangelion manga and graphic novel, doujinshi publications, trading cards, telephone cards, calendars, illustrations for laserdisc releases and CDs, and movie programmes (amongst other categories). The sheer range of sources from which the visuals contained in Der Mond derive makes the book a priceless addition to the shelves of any committed animation, comic-book and ultimately art lover.

Book Description
Japan's most controversial anime series is over...but not the manga version of Neon Genesis Evangelion! Series co-creator Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's personal interpretation of the Evangelion characters and story is sure to intrigue new and old fans alike. In 2015, the "Angels" have returned, and Shinji Ikari, a fourteen year-old child of the new Earth, is forced by his father Gendo-commander of the secret organization NERV-to pilot the monstrous biomechanical weapon called "Evangelion" to match the Angels' fearsome power. As a disembodied Shinji drifts in visions, merged with the esoteric fluids of the Evangelion, his father's long-serving lieutenant, Fuyutsuki, is kidnapped for interrogation by SEELE-in German, the "Soul"-the council of superiors whom NERV has been double-crossing for some time now...One of the founding members of Gainax, Japan's most progressive anime studio, Evangelion's Yoshiyuki Sadamoto was also the character designer for their recent Adult Swim smash FLCL. EVA Vol. 8 contains a Japanese sound FX glossary plus a special bonus guide to help U.S. fans discover the best of the many import books available on Evangelion!
Customer Reviews:
simply excellent.......2007-01-04
In my opinion the Evangelion mangas are even better than the Anime. If you loved the series, you should definately buy the mangas.
Evangelion at its best!.......2004-05-15
Sadamoto's version of Evangelion is really understandable. The first time I watched Evangelion, the anime, I feel it was a breakthrough in animation and story, but somewhere in the middle, it is very confusing and sometimes dissapointing because of all the psychological twists and turns, but I respect Hideaki Anno's vision. With the Manga, it is becoming clear where the story is heading. In volume eight, Shinji and Rei are changing a lot and they are becoming more mature and aware of all the events surrounding them, We see the beginning of NERV and the consequences of being a double agent for Kaji...and the plot is gettin very good. You can check the similarities between the anime and manga here, but with Sadamoto's point of view, you will see the story as never before, just like an extended version of the anime. I dont want to spoil things for you. Just check volume 8 of Neon Genesis Evangelion and you will find a lot of surprises, lucky for us, very enjoyable ones. I just cant wait for the rest of the volumes.
A moving chapter in the Evangelion story........2004-04-24
This volume was worth the long wait. Sadamoto's artwork and writing, already impressive, have matured. The characters are drawn in a wonderfully expressive style. Summary: In volume 8, Shinji floats in an disembodied form within EVA-01, where he encounters his own thoughts, fears, and visions of his late mother. On the outside, the story of the grown-ups & NERV are told in flashbacks. And the Kaji's activities finally catch up with him. There are no giant mecha battles; the conflicts occur on a human level in this volume. Shinji and Rei grow up. While it may slightly offend some EVA fans, the manga has diverged significantly from Anno's anime. It leaves aside much of the esoteric aspects of the the series; instead it focuses on the characters' interactions with one another. In particular Shinji and Rei. In the manga, Shinji is a sympathetic and tragic character who matures as a young man. His anguish at the lost of his mother and his courage is quite moving. The biggest change though probably takes place in Rei. Ayanami is not the same girl that she was in the beginning of the series. She is a fully realized person with her own hopes and fears in Sadamoto's version of Evangelion. Recommended to anyone who can appreciate a great story.
