4 out of 5 stars Daily Inspiration.......2007-09-12

I bought this book along with another of Melody's. I think she is a very caring and understanding person and this book gives me daily readings to keep up my spirits and know that I am not alone and I can fix my own problems. I wasn't expecting a daily devotional type of book, but I am so glad now that I have it. They say one day at a time.. and right now that's what I'm giving.

2 out of 5 stars Ok.......2007-08-03

Not what I expected it to be. More religious than I prefer and definately works with the AA platform which wasn't what I wanted.

Letting Go is about what it feels like for parents when their kids go off to college. Karen Levin Coburn and Madge Lawrence Treeger provide a compassionate approach, practical information, and advice about the physical and emotional processes of letting go. They discuss the college-age child's search for identity, independence, and intimacy; give a succinct and accurate description of how college life has changed over the decades; and provide a year-by-year breakdown of what to expect. Plus, you can read about typical and not-so-typical problems including date rape, crime, eating disorders, drug and alcohol use, and sexual issues. Of special note is the focus on orientation and the freshman year, including the disorientation parents feel once the drop-off has been made.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Helping you through.......2007-09-14

I have not read all of "Letting Go" and (as I have been overwhelmed preparing to send my child to college myself) I have not had time to. But the book has been a source of hope and perspective during the difficult time that surrounds this process of separation. I have dipped into the book as needed-- literally reading 5-page snippets that dealt with a particular issue I was facing. Knowing, for instance, that "the goodbye" might not go as planned -- with tears and Kodak moments -- was enormously helpful when...the goodbye did not go as planned.

The book was written with compassion and frankness for parents struggling with the difficulty of watching a beloved youngling launch off into a world of complexity and hard consequences. The book counsels parents on how to deal with kids when you catch them at their worst -- hung over at noon on a Sunday. It deals honestly with the fact that kids use college as a time to develop their sexual selves -- a process that involves a discomfiting amount of trial and error. The authors do not condone illicit behavior -- with sex, drugs or anything else -- but honestly observe that many young people test the rules by breaking them. I did it, you did it, they will do it -- whether right, wrong or otherwise.

"Letting Go" helps parents to keep their heads on at a time when reverting to being rule-maker is both tempting and usually wrong. Whether read cover to cover or on an "as needed" basis between crises, this book is a quite helpful and may even make the college experience bearable and even enjoyable for everyone.

3 out of 5 stars Not my favorite.......2007-09-11

I was so trepidacious about sending my child off to college. And I work at a college! This book is great for parents that have not lived on a college campus-it explains in detail how students find things like health care and academic support, how dorm rooms are set up, and a bunch of details about what living on campus is all about and how to find support services. I did not think it was helpful in regards to dealing with the crazy stuff in my own head about how to send my child off to college with a smile on my face. Drop off day was tough-and there was not enough in the book to help me with that. From my own experience I knew how to get my kid to find an ID and her dorm, the two things she needed the most. For parents that have not lived on a college campus, you may find this helpful. For me, I am still trying to deal with the empty nest and how to be supportive from far away. If anyone can recommend a book for a single parent of a single child, I would love to check it out. The good news is my baby has been away for only 3 weeks, and we're both doing just fine (her more than me, but that's a good thing!) Getting used to the idea of this first step towards independence is hard-harder than anything else I have ever done as a parent. And I wish I knew how to prepare others for this-but it's like childbirth. No amount of reading can ever prepare you for this.

5 out of 5 stars Letting go of your college child.......2007-05-12

This book provides excellent reminders of what it is like to be young and heading off into the adult world. The stories resonate and there are so many examples you are sure to find you and your child can relate tofits your child's personality and great tips for learning to deal with your new adult child. It also provides you, as the parent, with reassurance that when your child seems to be changing it is usually normal and ok, and if not provides suggestions for ways to help your child that he/she is likely to accept. It is also a great book for the young person going off to college to read real thoughts, concerns and successes from other young people who have recently been in their shoes. Great book

4 out of 5 stars Letting Go.......2007-05-09

I found this book extremely helpful. It gave me valuable information but at the same time reinforced some of the feelings and experiences I was already going through so I didn't feel like I was all alone. I am sending my only child off to college this fall so letting go is going to be especially hard -- the only one in the "nest" is leaving! Although I have worked outside the home since my daughter was born, I foremost see myself as a Mom and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do now that my primary responsibility will no longer be needed on a daily basis. This book helped me with some of those questions, although I know it will still be extremely tough. This book also gives perspective from the student's point of view and knowing what they are feeling and going through is a vital part of dealing with the changes and stages of letting go. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars only child.......2007-05-07

Loved the book, helped me understand my only child who is 18 and leaving for college this year. Could really relate, brought me to tears several times.

This book is for anyone going through any type of recovery: codependency, addiction, divorce. Daily affirmations that tell us that yes we are important and we are not crazy!

4 out of 5 stars More Excellent Work.......2006-08-17

I don't think we as human beings actually recognize the power of daily reading, meditation, and reflecting. Practicing these powerful principles allows us to remain mindful of the moment and reflect upon the deeper question in our lives. To devote ourself to a daily meditation and to journal on these quiet times is priceless and will certainly aid in the evolution of our soul. For me this practice has allowed an awakening to take place and opens my life up to all the opportunities that are available in this universe. Please give this practice a try! This book will help you in your journey of living and cultivating an active consciousness in your daily life.

This is another fine example of the inner wisdom of Melody Beattie. Her books have helped me TREMENDOUSLY with my life, though I'm not a 12 stepper. It applies to life for all of us!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read to Follow "Language of Letting Go' - A Must!.......2004-03-28

After working a 12 step for 9 months, read Language of Letting Go. Brought me in touch w/my feelings. Then my spouse went into
AA. "More Language of Letting Go" continued me on my path to
getting in touch w/my feelings. There's no index, but you
will find it comical how you do read the book. I highly
recommend Beattie's "Journey to the Heart" as a follow-up to
this one!
By reading these 3 books, I know more what I want and can name
the things I want. Before I couldn't.
Beattie pegs it beautifully, when no one else can.

This is a WONDERFUL daily reading! I read it through last year and am starting over this year. There are some passages that just jump out and smack you in the head because they relate to what you are going throught at the exact time you read it.

Book Description

An inspirational classic since 1979, LOVE IS LETTING GO OF FEAR remains one of the seminal works in the transpersonal movement. Psychiatrist Dr. Gerald Jampolsky's timeless message may be timelier today than ever: the only thing that stands between us and the awesome energy of love is fear. To live without fear, we must stop analyzing it, stop agonizing over it, stop fighting with it, and simply . . . let it go. How? By releasing our paralyzing preoccupation with the past and our chronic apprehension over the future—which is, needless to say, easier said than done.

To help us in this difficult journey from fear to love, Dr. Jampolsky presents tools in the form of 12 daily, progressive lessons for personal transformation. These crucial lessons work through the concepts of giving, forgiveness, cause and effect, perspective, reactive behavior, victimhood, judgement, living in the present, releasing the past, visualization, freedom to choose, and taking responsibility. In the 25 years since it was first published, LOVE IS LETTING GO OF FEAR continues to change lives with its frank, thought-provoking, and powerful response to overcoming life's greatest challenges.

I think this is a great book. I'm a little better person every time I read it.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Changed My Life.......2007-05-02

I was extremely depressed and about to lose a good relationship when I encountered this book. I read it, studied it, and saved my relationship. Now, my wife and I have been married 4 years strong and have an 18-month old son!

Go for it.

5 out of 5 stars Obvious why this book has long tail!.......2007-04-26

Or I suppose the more old-fashioned way to put it is "staying power." The concept is so simple. Fear and love cannot coexist. Want to be happy? Experience love? Let go of the fear. This book is a great reminder about what we fear -- the sneaky ways we are fearful and might not even recognize it as fear -- and then shows us to let go of it. Terrific book in its forthright simplicity and directness in dealing with very deep concepts.

1 out of 5 stars love is letting go of fear.......2007-03-15

Dr. Jampolsky, as do so many others, seem to believe love is an emotion. I think it is a choice, which lends itself to many emotions. Dr. Jampolsky if love is an emotions is it a matter of choice or something that you simply feel?

5 out of 5 stars learn to create miracles with ease.......2007-01-28

Jerry Jampolsky wrote this litte action book thirty years ago, based in A Course In Miracles. He was able to put into action a practical handbook to enable a person to get into another reality by letting go of fear. There are daily affirmations, which when used actually impact on the user and allow them to understand how they can choose to repond to life and the challengers. A Course In Miracles took the world by storm, and is lengthy program which involves three volumes of student, teacher, and workbook. Love is Letting Go Of Fear is a short cut that is just as powerful today as it was when it was first published.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I thought this book was a waste of money and time.......2007-10-04

Pretty lame. All of it was just common sense except for the "blame it on your parents part" which I thought was totally off base. I thought the simplicity of the way it was written and the tone was actually a bit condescending.

5 out of 5 stars short and sweet.......2007-08-30

This book is a god send! I love how short and easy to read it is. It truly helped during those crazy times where all i wanted to do was dial his digits. Every woman can relate! I especially liked the chapter on ambivalent men. Read it during those hard times and don't call that man. Instead, go out and find a new man worth your time!

4 out of 5 stars Victory.......2007-05-09

This book gave me some valid guidelines to consider in order for me not to call that man. I ended a relationship that was not going anywhere with hopes that it would. The therapy helped me get out of my "relationship over funk" also known as hurt feelings and depression much sooner. I had a light at the end of the tunnel after completing this book. Highly recommended if your thinking about calling that man.

5 out of 5 stars But what about when he calls you...47 times???.......2007-03-23

I bought this book after a three year relationship had given me one too many roller coaster rides to hell. And,though it is tiny and a quick read, it did help. First of all, and I am not being sarcastic, while I was reading the book----I wasn't calling him. It worked as a delaying tactic and as a support of strength. I might be in denial, though, because a lot of the book seemed not to pertain to me. My father was loving and not distant, so I am still at a loss as to why I let this man torture me emotionally for so long.

But when I stopped calling, he STARTED calling, so I wish that she would write a sequel called DON"T PICK UP THAT PHONE!

3 out of 5 stars It helps but definitely get other books as well.......2007-02-26

It was horrible during my break with my boyfriend then and I felt it was like an addiction that I needed to call him all the time. It was really painful to not hear from him and at least the time you spent reading the book you don't think of picking up the phone. I don't have as much take away from this book then others but still every bit of info helps.

Book Description

These bestselling doctors walk you through their ten proven stages to recovery from codependency that results from external circustances. Humans are susceptible to codependency because of our sinful tendency to use defense mechanisms to fool ourselves. In codependent relationships, deceitful games are played, and important Christian principles are often taken out of context and abused. God wants us to have healthy relationships with a balance between being dependent and independent. The doctors describe how the most effective means of overcoming codependent relationships is to establish or deepen a relationship with Christ Himself. They describe the causes of codependency, pointing out the factors that perpetuate it, and lead readers through their ten stages of recovery.

5 out of 5 stars Rev. Fuzzy Lake.......2007-01-11

This is a must read for individuals with codependant issues. It is written from a biblical perspective by three Drs. Is uses scripture all the way through it. It is very easy reading and very simple to understand. The very best book on codependancy I have ever read. I use it to counsel people.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful without being preachy.......2005-12-28

I found the information in this book very helpful. It is easy to read and understand. It is encouraging. It provides insight into what's going on when you're trying to cast off old ways of living that hold you back.

This book is worth reading, not only for the information to help you grow personally, but to be more aware and understanding of others in your life.

Although the authors may be religious, this does not come across heavily in the book and would not complicate a non-religious person using the information and insights to change things they don't like.

5 out of 5 stars This book really is ground breaking.......2005-06-08

Having been raised in a home with an alcoholic father and abusive parents in general, I was left in a codependant stuper. At thrity-something and after the birth of a fourth child I found myself in a serious depression I couldn't shake. Having gone through years of counseling and having dealt with much of my past, I was suprised to see it creep up again. This book gave me some powerfully accurate information as well as some great tools for dealing with my situation. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to finally be rid of the old tapes in their head.

5 out of 5 stars It certainly is a choice.......2004-03-01

Don't let the title fool you. Although this is a book about dealing with failed adult relationships, the main emphasis in on the phenomena of co-dependency. Unresolved issues of childhood are the primary cause, and Drs Hemfelt, Minnerth and Meier go through many real life case studies that lead the reader to examine their own life, as well as the life of thier "significant other". Realizing how your lowly filled "love tank" is affecting your life is a powerful tool for recovery. Realizing you have a loving heavenly father is a key to recovery as well. I think this book is excellent for anybody experiencing a significant problem with a marriage or other long term relationship.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Guide to Resolving Shame.......2000-03-28

Letting Go of Shame is an excellent self help guide. Each chapter ends with practical excercises. The material is presented in an orderly fasion, working through the issues one by one. The positive role that shame plays is covered, but the focal issue is toxic shame. It is easy for the reader to identify with symptomatic consequences of shame as each source of shame is presented. It is complementary to Bradshaw's classic book on the subject and in many ways is a simpler presentation for the novice. Complex and technical language is avoided. This is a practical self help guide for anyone dealing with the self inflicting pain caused by shame.

2 out of 5 stars Clinical, not spiritual, a little tough to read.......2006-05-16

I've read a lot of break up books since my break up. This book was helpful, but not sure if it actually helped me? Anyway, I found 2 sites...one for girls and for guys that ended up helping me because of the support groups. brokenheartedgirl.com and brokenheartedguy.com. Sometimes you need to talk to people and they also recommend other books.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-02-26

The book was really helpful on overcoming my breakup. The book has really good information in it. The best information that I have found yet. In my opinion I highly recomend this book to anyone who is going through divorce or a breakup of any kind.
Thank you.

3 out of 5 stars Average.......2005-08-08

It covers most of the major themes dealing with loss. It reads a bit slow and some parts are not interesting. Rebuilding is significantly better book.

1 out of 5 stars secular vs spiritual.......2005-06-07

If you are a spiritual person this is NOT the book for you!!! Some suggestions include casual sex, smoking pot, acting as if you are someone else, wearing clevage showing clothes, putting Hustler and Playboy on the coffee table, watching Deep Throat, whispering "I feel like I'm being raped" in your lover's ear, you get the picture ! I found myself laughing out loud. They can't be serious. Get yourself a book on meditation instead !!!

2 out of 5 stars This is just terrible........2005-01-31

I suffered a break up exactly one week ago and was in the bookstore searching for some solace. I looked through this book and I am sorry to say it made me feel worse than I do right now, if that's even possible.

The book does an excellent job relating to how you feel after a terrible breakup--after the first week of course, I am pretty miserable--but besides that, the strategies offered are really awful and could possibly set you back. Among the bad ideas throughout the book:

(1) Call your ex. Excuse me?? I need to make a clean break here and get on with my life, not risk the possibility of being re-rejected or offered some false hopes.
(2) Go out and have sex. It should be self-explanatory why this one is not helpful.
(3) Have an "implosion" ceremony, where you take out ALL the remaining mementos of your ex (that you should have carefully saved, according to these authors), and surround yourself with them while you watch old home videos and/or listen to the songs you had together. Spend the entire day in mourning and don't do anything to improve your mood. Follow this day with a celebration of the ending of the relationship.
(4) An extensive checklist in the beginning of the book that labels your symptoms as "compulsive," "hysterical," "depressive" and other words that make you feel like you've really lost your mind.

Perhaps this book could be helpful, but ideas like these should best be carried out with the supervision of a therapist.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Letting Go and Becoming.......2007-09-11

This is a good mix of spirituality and one that includes a meditation. This reminds me of the daily Meditation that I use every day from Marianne Williamson. It's just that good!I'm sure that if you like the meditation CD, you would definately like her CD on Letting Go and Becoming.

5 out of 5 stars Marianne Williamson: Inspirational Speaker.......2007-02-17

I enjoy listening to the message that Marianne Williamson gives. She is inspirational, shares her insight & thoughts based on her life experiences and education. She always gives me a new perspective to think about regarding life, love, change, growth. I enjoy listening to her on the road, which is a time for reflection for many of us. Her philosophy has enriched my life and made me a better person.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual ideas in an understandable format.......2004-10-13

Bestselling author Marianne Williamson has translated and popularized A Course in Miracles and includes other ideas from Christianity, Judaism, and other religions, along with her own spiritual experiences in this live seminar. Some of the main ideas here include forgiving yourself and others, getting in touch with one's true purpose for living, achieving a balance between male and female thought and behavior patterns. Her rapid, authoritative voice adds compulsion and determination.

5 out of 5 stars Just thank you!.......2004-07-27

I think a person would have a hard time, not taking something very meaningful, practical, and possibly life altering away from what Marianne has to say. If the definition of a miracle really is a shift in perception, then her messages are real miracles. I am continually given a higher vantage point on my path. thank you, Marianne.

5 out of 5 stars A really great gem.......2003-03-15

Marrianne Williamson's work is both real and honest. Rather than couch things in a concepts that are alien or extremely religious, she talks to you about the realities of existing. Of how things will not always be easy, about how you will lose your way, and honestly how to see people clearly. Growth is messy, it's not neat, maturity is not easy, nor is spirtiuality delicate work, but with assistance from a tape like this you can see yourself clearly and how to bridge yourself from concept to human to spiritual being.
