Book Description

HOPE FOR MANY "HOPELESS" DISEASES, FROM ONE OF THE FOREMOST RESEARCHERS IN THE FIELD

When Randy McCloy, Jr., the sole survivor of the Sago Mine disaster, finally walked out of the hospital to rejoin his family, it was in part due to the miracle of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is based on an almost laughably simple idea: Oxygen can be used therapeutically for a wide range of conditions where tissues have been damaged by oxygen deprivation. Restore that oxygen, goes the logical thinking, and you can restore much of the lost function. It seems too good to be true, but Dr. Paul G. Harch’s research and clinical practice has shown that this noninvasive and painless treatment can help the tens of millions of Americans who suffer from a brain injury or disease, such as:

• Stroke
• Autism and other learning disabilities
• Cerebral palsy and other birth injuries
• Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, and other degenerative neurological diseases
• Emergency situations requiring resuscitation, such as cardiac arrest, carbon monoxide poisoning, or near drowning

It can also improve conditions in which inflammation is the culprit, such as arthritis and asthma; promote healing in infections, burns, and skin grafts, such as diabetic foot wounds; and slow the aging process.

For the millions of Americans suffering from these seemingly “hopeless” diseases, here finally is the handbook of hope. Inspiring and informative,
The Oxygen Revolution is the definitive guide to the miracle of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, from a pioneer in the field.

This book is a must read for everyone. Many people could improve their quality of life with a few treatments of oxygen.

Dr. Harch is truly the strongest advocate for people to recieve help who have had brain injury. Including individuals who have had brain injury in Iraq.

A must, must , must ready. For EVERYONE.

I have personal knowledge of individuals who have been treated and have had great sucess. I whole heartedly support everything Dr. Harch has written about.

5 out of 5 stars Great book - must read!!.......2007-08-03

Finally a book on hyperbaric oxygen therapy that is written in terms that are understandable for someone without advanced medical training! Really explains how oxygen helps heal, very informative and truly well written! Thanks to the authors!

3 out of 5 stars A Book Lacking in Practical Information.......2007-07-14

My reason for becoming interested in HBOT? A child with severe cystic acne. After trying many treatments, there was little improvement. I thought, "If HBOT can heal wounds, why not the ones on this child's face?"

I pre-ordered this book on Amazon. The book jacket draws you in. It says, "HPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY: The Groundbreaking New Treatment for..." Well, then there is a long list. The problem? The book only very briefly touches on the majority of those conditions. A lot of pages are spent covering brain injuries, either by accident, illness or birth. A good amount of pages talk about cardiac issues and diabetes.

When my child started HBOT, I wanted to be sure the staff knew what they were doing. I was hoping that the book would give me detailed, technical info. It was light on that. The doctor spent a good amount of time trying to prove the the science behind HBOT, almost desperate to prove that it is not kooky. He also devoted many pages to the political aspects of HBOT. Very boring and not helpful to one currently doing HBOT. I read the book (twice) and still had many unanswered questions.

The book is worth reading if interested in HBOT, but won't give you many specifics about the nuts and bolts of administering HBOT.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know in a clear and understandable book!! .......2007-07-10

The Oxygen Revolution ---- what a wonderful book! This is what has been needed for the general public for so long! There are many books on hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the medical profession but this is the first one I know of that speaks to the layperson.

I've seen what hyperbaric oxygen therapy can do for people who felt hopeless before giving hyperbaric therapy a try. The results have ranged from subtle to dramatic - what some call miracles and, having seen the changes, I can understand why.

The Oxygen Revolution is set up in a way that you can choose what you want to learn about. You may want to read it all or you may only be interested (at this time) in certain conditions. Dr. Harch makes it easy to do just that by the way he has set it up. Part III of The Oxygen Revolution is of extreme value to all of us. Once you've familiarized yourself with the conditions that hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help, Part III tells us what we REALLY need to know: how to get HBOT when we need it, what obstacles to expect, and how to get involved to change healthcare policy. For me, this was of incredible value! I don't need to understand how hyperbaric oxygen therapy works but I do need to know how to get it when I need it.

It amazes me that so many know so little about this treatment when it has been around for quite some time. But then again, when the medical community itself has not taken the time to educate itself fully regarding hyperbaric therapy, how can we expect to know about it? Most of the time, it is through our doctors that we become familiar with therapies, treatments, procedures, etc.

I urge everyone to read the book; educate YOURSELF. If you wait until you or someone you love has an actual need for hyperbaric therapy, you will be fighting the clock to become informed. Even worse, you may never know it is an option to help with or achieve recovery.

Dr. Harch is truly an expert and leader in this field of medicine. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting him or hearing him speak, you know he is passionate about hyperbaric oxygen therapy, in particular, for neurological conditions and has spent his career fighting to make it available for everyone, everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars nearly impossible to overstate the value of either this book or properly dosed HBOT.......2007-06-27

Dr. Harch has presented us with such a wealth of information about the benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and its importance in reclaiming good neurological and physical health after illness or injury that it's nearly impossible to overstate the value of either this book or properly dosed HBOT. I found the book to be so valuable, in fact, that I purchased a dozen copies to give to family and friends because I want them to be armed with the FACTS about HBOT as presented by a true expert and leader in this field of medicine before they or someone they care about needs it. Do yourself and your family a favor and educate yourself with the facts about HBOT; don't cheat yourself by letting someone who knows little to nothing about this very important therapy (even your own doctor) dissuade you from learning the truth about this legitimate medical treatment; read the book and then give the naysayer a copy or loan them yours. Yes, it's that important.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting & well-edited intro to Linguistics.......1999-07-09

This collection of essays touches on all the major points of Linguistics (very briefly) and is a great introduction to the field. The different authors all have a slightly different style, but it is not jarring and does not interfere with the ability to pull information out of the text. I have read other intro to linguistics books and none have been as interesting or informative as this one. I highly recommend this book to anyone who plans to take a college 'english language' or linguistics class, and to anyone interested in linguistice but deosn't know where to start.

4 out of 5 stars A "Con"-Text Book for Writing Students and Teachers.......2000-08-26

I have used previous editions of this book in my college freshman composition courses. It does what very few composition texts or readers have ever done: the editors recognize that writing (and reading, of course) does not occur in isolation, but within the context of our own and our students' lives. Particularly, it aids students to think about their own writing in light of the cultural, psychological, and political issues of language, literacy, argumentation, and mass media. They include much about minority and non-Western cultures, plus articles and essays from both the present and the past. If you want to enhance your own or your students' understanding of the complex and exciting world of language, this is the book for you.

Book Description

When brothers and sisters in Christ fall into sin, how should the church respond? Very often, Christians stumble in their attempt to address this issue. Either they ignore the wrongdoing or they banish the wrongdoer. The authors of this groundbreaking book advocate another way: the spiritual care team.A spiritual care team is a small group of mature Christians who voluntarily commit themselves to support and guide another through the process of repentance and restoration. This community-based and community-oriented approach emphasizes the importance of acknowledging sin, making repentance complete and reestablishing personal spiritual discipline. Restoring the Fallen offers practical guidance on how to form a spiritual care team, as well as how to support the spouse and family of the one working through the process of restoration, how professional helpers and the whole church body might contribute to restoration, and how to provide ongoing care after the main work of the spiritual care team is complete. It is an essential book for pastors, counselors and church leaders.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and helpful read.......2007-05-07

This book will be very helpful for any one planning to be involved in a restoration group for someone who has fallen sexually. It reads like a case study from the perspective of the person being helped, Earl Wilson in this case. Although it has many authors listed, all but two chapters are written by Earl Wilson.

The book is not very well written, but the story is compelling and some of the insights are like gold nuggets. The second appendix is an interview with Wilson's counselor, who is not a Christian, and is painful to read, but also insightful.

Any church looking to use restoration groups to help those wrapped up in sexual immorality should definitely read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Helped save our marriage.......2004-10-06

This is a very practical book for those supporting a recovering person. I should make clear that it is only for supporting those truly committed to their own recovery. The authors have experience in this area first hand as both recovering addicts & as their support team. As far as I am aware, this is the only book of it's kind. I highly recommend this book for after the initial shock of the addiction is out in the open when those involved are ready to take those next difficult steps toward getting better. My husband & I were able to share this book with our committed support team as a guideline for how best to help us reconcile. Though it was only a part of our recovery plan, this book was invaluable. Almost 4 years later, we are still in active recovery & still meeting with our recovery team on a regular basis. Huge thanks to the Wilsons for sharing their story!

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Biblical Comprehensive Plan.......2003-09-08

All of the authors were directly involved in shepharding a christian counselor/speaker/writer/teacher back to full reconciliation - which by the way was a several year process. Sexual sins thrives in darkness and secrecy. They tend to make people uncomfortable so most are happy to just brush them under the rug, move on, and never bring these temptations and acting out tendencies up again. WRONG!!It is not 'only' the sexual sins, but the sins of selfishness, long histories of bad choices, lying, deciet, twisting the truth. Just getting the acting out to stop is actually only scraping the surface. He needed to get to the point of humility in admitting what a mess his way made of life. He needed to willingly submit to God's direction as laid out for him through his psychiatrist, Spiritual Care Team (two other couples) and his wife. They recognized how important it is to include the wife in the process. Involving the wife help short circuit any twisting or hiding of the truth of what is or is not happening. He stated that the abuser may never be the one to declare himself healed. This showed a wholistic approach of not only dealing with acting out, but the deeper individual levels and marraige habits that needed retraining with follow-up. They deal with the objections such as who am I to judge someone else, or thinking that by not bringing up bold love questions such as how is your spiritual walk going this week? Have you watched anything that might bring comprimises? Are you lying to me? We ARE our brothers keepers. Not in a pharisaical or judgemental way but in an encouraging way to keep on the right track. This is a must read for church leaders in a church such as mine that doesn't practice discipline much. It helps to lay out a great healing process. I needed this book two years ago. Now that my husband's accountability group wanted to hold him accountable for very specific things each week, he declared that the group had finished serving its original purpose and he didn't need them anymore. His unwillingness to submit is heartbreaking. At least read the book to understand how many relationships are hurt with these sins and for a broader view on the depth of deciet that must be rooted out.

2 out of 5 stars The Best in Help, Hope, and Healing!.......2000-12-13

As a former fallen pastor, I wish this book would have been available a decade ago. After doing years of research and helping other religious "restorees," I believe "Restoring the Fallen" is the most comprehensive and insightful book on the market. The writers (multiple authors) convey workable truths obtained from practical experience. Every "nook and cranny" of restoration is dealt with in an easy-to-read and understandable style. These authors believe that there is life after a fall - and for religious leaders hurt by sin, it is needed help, hope and healing.

This is a good book, but an updated edition is supposed to come out December 2006 so wait until then if you want this book.

    5 out of 5 stars completely essential.......2006-01-26

this is the most useful and necessary guidebook not only for indonesia but for any destination you may have!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but Could Be Better.......2004-04-07

This is currently the best overall guide to Indonesia for independent travellers. It covers enough attractions to keep people occupied for months, and is more than enough for those with an average interest in the country.
As usual with this series, it is strong on practical details like prices, public transport and city maps, though one should never forget that prices in particular will have changed by the time one gets there - this 7th edition was researched in 2002, and reflects the situation as it was then.
There is also more than enough background information about culture and history for most readers.
Note however that coverage of remoter, less-visited regions is poorer - the chapter on Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) is nearly useless, and the one on Papua (Indonesian New Guinea) is little better.
Those with a deeper interest in Indonesia, or with an interest in a particular region, might want more detailed guides to those areas - Lonely Planet has great guides to Java and Nusa Tenggara, while Periplus has eight separate ones to all parts of the country, though the Periplus ones are best backed up with this book for practical details.

4 out of 5 stars Good Starting Point, Reference Material.......2003-12-07

This is a good guidebook and fairly accurate. In a country like Indonesia, however, things change quickly so use this book as a reference not as a bible. Do you own research and talk to other travellers. Since LP Indo is the default travellers' guide to this region, most of the restaurants and hotels are not the best values. Many get a steady stream of customers just because of a good review and never bother to maintain the facilities. The best deals require a lot of footwork and bargaining! Also, bus/boat schedules always change. So don't plan a rigid itinerary based on the data in this book. I know a couple that lost a week because they planned a trip around a ferry described in this book but didn't actually exist! Be prepared to wait if you're going off the beaten path. Some boat services are infrequent between the islands.

Learning some bahasa indonesia always helps bargaining. The language section is adequate but the phrasebook is much better.

3 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet Indonesia.......2003-09-27

This book is great for giving you ideas as to which places to visit. But seeing now that it's 3 years out of date it has a lot of errors. I just used it in august of 2003 and all the prices are way off. Expect to pay about 2-3 times (sometimes 5-6 times) what the guide says because Indonesia's economy has picked up since the book has been released. For example: Borobudur is listed as 10,000Rp (~$1.80CDN) for entrance in the guidebook, now it's 58,000Rp (~$10CDN). They should be putting out a new one soon so if you can, wait for the next one to come out.

    Book Description

Pharsalia, a plantation located in piedmont Virginia at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is one of the best-documented sites of its kind. Drawing on the exceptionally rich trove of papers left behind by the Massie family, Pharsalia's owners, this case study demonstrates how white southern planters paradoxically relied on capitalistic methods even as they pursued an ideal of agrarian independence. Lynn A. Nelson also shows how the contradictions between these ends and means would later manifest themselves in the southern conservation movement.

Nelson follows the fortunes of Pharsalia's owners, telling how Virginia's traditional extensive agriculture contributed to the soil's erosion and exhaustion. Subsequent attempts to balance independence and sustainability through a complex system of crop rotation and resource recycling ultimately gave way to an intensive, slave-based form of agricultural capitalism.

Pharsalia could not support the Massies' aristocratic ambitions, and it was eventually parceled up and sold off by family members. The farm's story embodies several fundamentals of modern U.S. environmental thought. Southerners' nineteenth-century quest for financial and ecological independence provided the background for conservationists' attempts to save family farming. At the same time, farmers' failure to achieve independence while maximizing profits and crop yields drove them to seek government aid and regulation. These became some of the hallmarks of conservation efforts in the New Deal and beyond.

Pharsalia is a plantation located in piedmont Virginia - one of the best-documented sites of its kind thanks to papers and records left by the Massie family owners. These enable PHARSALIA to be presented here as a case study of how white southern plantation owners employed capitalistic methods to cement their ideas of independence. Any college-level holding strong in Southern history or regional environmental history will find PHARSALIA key to understanding the southern conservation movement as it follows its owners' agricultural pursuits and environmental assessments.

    Book Description

Do, Die, or Get Along weaves together voices of twenty-six people who have intimate connections to two neighboring towns in the southwestern Virginia coal country. Filled with evidence of a new kind of local outlook on the widespread challenge of small community survival, the book tells how a confrontational "do-or-die" past has given way to a "get-along" present built on coalition and guarded hope. St. Paul and Dante are six miles apart; measured in other ways, the distance can be greater. Dante, for decades a company town controlled at all levels by the mine owners, has only a recent history of civic initiative. In St. Paul, which arose at a railroad junction, public debate, entrepreneurship, and education found a more receptive home.

The speakers are men and women, wealthy and poor, black and white, old-timers and newcomers. Their concerns and interests range widely, including the battle over strip mining, efforts to control flooding, the 1989-90 Pittston strike, the nationally acclaimed Wetlands Estonoa Project, and the grassroots revitalization of both towns led by the St. Paul Tomorrow and Dante Lives On organizations. Their talk of the past often invokes an ethos, rooted in the hand-to-mouth pioneer era, of short-term gain. Just as frequently, however, talk turns to more recent times, when community leaders, corporations, unions, the federal government, and environmental groups have begun to seek accord based on what will be best, in the long run, for the towns.

The story of Dante and St. Paul, Crow writes, "gives twenty-first-century meaning to the idea of the good fight." This is an absorbing account of persistence, resourcefulness, and eclectic redefinition of success and community revival, with ramifications well beyond Appalachia.

5 out of 5 stars Life in modern Appalachia.......2007-03-07

Peter Crow's finely crafted, deftly written narrative recounts, in thier own words, the lives of people in Dante and St. Paul, two small southwest Virginia communities caught in the backwash of history and struggling to maintain an economic and cultural foothold in the post-industrial world. A must-read for anyone interested in modern Appalachia.

      Book Description

Born to a petty thief in London's notorious Newgate prison and determined to make her way in a rapacious and materialistic society, Moll Flanders recounts the "fortunes and misfortunes" of her turbulent life in this 1722 novel. Though Moll Flanders was shaped by the conventions of criminal biography, Defoe also drew on other literary traditions and his own rich background to create a remarkably original—and still controversial—work.

In addition to a critical introduction and substantial footnotes, this Broadview edition provides a wide range of writings by Defoe as well as contemporary responses to Moll Flanders. Other appendices include a selection of eighteenth-century writings on crime, prisons, and the Virginia colony.

4 out of 5 stars A Man Who Crossed Disciplines and Abetted Creativity.......2005-07-05

Virginia Spencer Carr is not only a fine biographer in this recounting of the life of the ubiquitous Paul Bowles, she also was a friend of a fascinating man who touched many aspects of the arts and made his mark in multiple areas of creation. Some of those areas were in his friendships and interpersonal critiquing of famous artists such as WH Auden, Benjamin Britten, Ned Rorem, Aaron Copland, Tennessee Williams, Virgil Thompson, Carson McCullers, and Gertrude Stein. His life began as a poet, progressed through years as a composer of music that never quite found its place, and ended as a novelist of such impressive books as 'The Sheltering Sky', 'Let It Com Down', 'The Spider's House' etc.

Carr takes all this into account and serves it up with a thorough amount of information about Bowles' carefully guarded private life. Married to lesbian author Jane Bowles, Paul Bowles was one of those sub rosa gay artists who managed to bond with many other great gay artists in a time when such interplay was hardly condoned. Carr manages to give insight as to how these people learned form each other (for instance the infamous February House in New York where many of them lived communally for a while); she does this without resorting to gossip or sensationalism, respecting the fact that writing biography includes an obligation to yield a viable picture of the subject.

Bowles spent much of his life in Tangiers (this is where Carr first met him) and most of his successful novels and writings were influenced by his observations of the clashes between the 'tourists' who visit Morocco yet never connects with the realites and idiosyncrasies of that mysteriously magical place. Much the same could be said about the ambiguous persona of Paul Bowles. How much of his life was due to his inherent talents and how much was due to his integral interplay with the artists of his entourage? Carr poses some fine explanations in this very readable biography of a man who remains an enigma. Grady Harp. July 05

      3 out of 5 stars what happened?.......2005-01-31

this book, we are told, was originally a manuscript of 1,308 pages. i mention this because one comes upon paragraphs here and there that seem part of a longer work. the first chapters are by far the best with the narrative smooth and the early years "fleshed out". however, when bowles' artistic carreer begins so do the problems, which may have to do with the tremendous job of cutting out 3/4 of the original manuscript.
the book contains no new important information or point of view but there are some new details here and there ( mainly about press runs, money matters and sexual partners).
ms. carr travelled 13 times to tangier for her research, arranged for bowles' medical operations in the u.s.a. and had her subject as a house guest for 3 months. however, bowles' literary executor refused to authorize this biography. we are not told why.
