A must read for the Corgi owner and the soon to be.......2007-08-13
Okay, I'm biased. I'm proud to have been a contributer and some small way to making this book possible. And it's a great book. If you have a Corgi (Pem or Cardi) or a Corgi mix, there are tips in here from some really experienced people. And stories, recipes (people and dog oriented) and pictures. A real delight for those of us who love the breeds. And if you're thinking about getting one, there's advice on how to pick one out, where to find one (hint, not at the pet store) and how to raise a well behaved dog. Not everybody's cut out to be a Corgi owner, but this book can hopefully help you decide.
And it benefits CorgiAid. I can't think of a better way to contribute to a great cause and get something useful in return.
Corgi Wit and Wisdom.......2007-05-13
This is a wonderful book for any Corgi lover, it has great stories, advice and, lots of fun things to read. What a great way to help Corgi aid. Highly recommended! Every Corgi owner should have this.
Great for Corgi lover.......2006-10-26
If you are adopting a corgi or thinking about getting one, this is the book for you. It contains all information you will need to know to raise such a wonderful creature. Love the book so much that I'm almost mad at myself for getting it so late that now mine is almost 3 years old. :)
It IS Everything Corgi.......2006-08-24
My wife and I have owned two cardigan welsh corgi's and they are the only breed for us. Bright, loving, beautiful, stubborn, loyal and hilarious, our two dogs have given us years of joy.
When our oldest died just three weeks short of his 17th birthday, we bought this book based on other reader's reviews in hopes of learning some information about breeders and how to deal with some behavioral issues exhibited by our now seven year-old, Morton. The book provided valuable knowledge and insights about these and other topics. If you're going to buy a book to learn about how to get your own corgi and raise him or her, this is the best volume I've read on the subject.
Corgis - "Let us entertain you".......2005-11-30
Everything you want to know or need to know about the two breeds. An excellent book on how to raise, train and care for any dog.
One thing I do not understand though, is why more people don't own corgis. They're not huge dogs, but they think they are and are one of the most trainable of dogs, plus they are a laugh a minute because no one can convince them they aren't "people". You just need to let them know who is the alpha and who isn't. It doesn't take them long to figure this out, either. It is because, as I said, they are one of the most trainable of dogs.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi "Cliff Notes".......2004-04-25
This book has great photographs. The information it provides is simple and easy to understand/read. I would recommend it for someone who does not know the breed and is interested in an easy place to start. The book provides an overview on the breed, breed characteristics, care and basic training. The book does not go into depth on any one aspect. Not neccesarily for the more experienced Corgi person.
Book Description
Pembrokes and cadigans are related breeds of Welsh Corgi, and are described together here. This volume is filled with handsome, full-color photos, instructive line art, and easy-to-read tables and charts. It provides information on all aspects of pet care for new and prospective pet owners.

Great book about Corgis.......2007-03-09
I bought this book while I was still puppy-hunting, and it was great. It has lots of tips and breed-specific info about both Cardigan and Pembroke Welsh Corgis, and was invaluable in helping me locate a good breeder and find the best puppy for us. It also has great tips for when you first bring your puppy home, and is full of gorgeous color pictures. A+.
A great introduction to a wonderful breed of dogs.......2003-07-04
If you already are familiar with the corgi breed, you'll love this book because it's filled with marvelously appealing photos of corgi puppies! There's an unusual number of great photos, unusual even for a book about the breed.
The book also is right on the money with advice on how to raise your corgi to avoid behavior problems. These are working dogs, and if they are trained properly (and it's easy) they are a delight, but without that training they can dominate the household and be a real nuisanced. It's clear that the author knows a lot about the breed.
Most dog books are about dogs in general, with little about the particular breed. You get the impression that there's a general dog book on the word processor that's customized slightly for each breed. This is a book about corgis, written to be just about corgis, and full of great information that's useful for every corgi owner.
Lots of corgi-specific Info.......2001-10-30
The problem with many dog-related books is that they contain a few dozen pages related to the breed & the rest is filled with generic information that pertains to all breeds. This book in particular deals with corgis the whole way through. A great deal of helpful information concerning corgis appears within.
A great book for people narrowing down their breed selection.......2001-10-17
We purchased this book to help us learn more about Corgis, as we were pretty sure we wanted to add a Corgi to our family. This is a concise book, with much Corgi-specific info (though the requisite all-dog info sneaks in, too). Great photos. Showed it to a breeder, and she liked it a lot, too.
Not Everything I Was Hoping For.......2000-10-08
This book was informative on generally on how to care for, train and breed a dog. It explained the history and physical traits of the two Corgis, and had many great photos. My main problem with the book is that it did not go into details of the behavior and personality of Corgis. Already being the owner of a Pembroke, my hope for this kind of information was my main motive for buying this book. Overall, this seemed more like a book about dog care with some Corgi topics included rather than a book devoted to Corgi specifics. Still, the price is reasonable, and the book easy to read and reference. If you are a new owner of a Corgi, or looking to get one, without any dog info book yet, you should be satisfied with this. But, if you are looking to get a more detailed account of Corgi personality and ability, you may not be. I have not read any of the other Corgi books, so can not compare.
Book Description
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is an internationally popular and sweet-natured dog. If you are a first time Corgi owner, or are thinking of making one of these intelligent dogs a part of your family, then this beginner's guide is just for you!

CORGIS RULE!.......2002-07-18
I DID NOT READ THIS BOOK, BUT CORGIS, ESPESCIALLY THE PEMBORKE WELSH VARIATION ROCK!
One of the weakest corgi books out there.......2001-10-30
The New Complete Pembroke Welsh Corgi by the same author (D. Harper) is vastly superior to this book. That book contains information about corgis & no other breed. Half of the information in this book is on corgis, but the rest of this book contains generic information that pertains to all breeds. For example; the "Happy Healthy Pet" book for westies shares some identical chapters with this one.
great book for corgi lovers.......2001-07-16
the book was great with lots of pictures and info. it was definatly worth the money. this dog is soo cute!
Good Information on Corgis...and overall dogs.......2001-03-21
I have just bought and read this book on Corgis for a corgi research project I am doing. It lists a brief myth of corgis with faeries and how they came to be, plus their regular history, who owns them, etc... I thought it was very good description wise, also. It did an overall description of a corgi, their parts, then gave some interesting facts about each part. The only thing I was disappointed in is when I got to Part 3 and 4 ("Enjoying your Dog" and "Beyond the Basics") of the book. It was mainly focusing on all breeds, not mentioning any specific corgi facts to watch out for. Further more, the book was showing pictures in those sections of mostly any dog but corgi. But that's me...I thought it was only going to be about corgis.
The cutest dog you'll ever get.......1999-04-24
A perfect book! It teaches you what to do when you bring it home, training, feeding, walking etc. Shows alot of many different pictures. It taught me all I need to know and much more!

Definitive Corgi Book.......2002-02-11
There are a number of "breed" books out there on the Pembroke, but this is the official one. Mostly geared toward people who are interested in conformation showing and breeding, it is the only book with extensive photographs and discussions of bloodlines which have influenced the breed. Like all books by breed fanciers, it does not say anything critical about anything. If you want to find out about problems in the breed or in certain lines, you won't find it here (for example, temperament, genetic health, over-popularity). It does have short but informative sections on other topics besides showing and breeding. It is an excellent example of its kind. Certainly all Pembroke breeders should have a copy (but they probably do).
The best corgi book out there.......2001-10-30
This is the most complete corgi book I've found. There's so much information I can't begin to do it justice - from history of the breed to prime examples of corgis, this book blows away every other dog book I've ever had my hands on (for any breed). Though this book might cost more, it is well worth it - I bought 5 or 6 Corgi books and this one makes the rest look like cheap info pamphlets.
a very informative text on the pembroke corgi.......1998-02-06
The new complete pembroke welsh corgi offers quite a bit of information for fanciers of the breed. The history of the breed is well documented and includes rare photos of champion corgis. The text is written so as to interest both those who breed and show corgis, as well as those who are just interested in owning one as a pet. The health care information is informative and provides pet owners with important insight into corgi care. This is definitely one of the best references for the breed that I have seen.

A full-color insert, several appendices, and an extensive index are just part of what makes this title appealing for those who love the diligent and dedicated Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

entertaining more than helpful.......2007-06-17
I enjoyed the book, but as a rule unless you plan to breed or show your corgi this book will be of limited use.Found few helpful hints as I plan to keep my corgi as a pet.
just good.......2007-05-13
Good mix of photos, history and temperment of a Corgi in the book. It helped us to understand and relate to our Corgi and work with her personality - it's easy to expect all dogs to be the same. We learned such is not the case with a Corgi and because of understanding a Corgi's temperment [through this book] we have a wonderful time with our dog.
Good "All Around" Information on a Great Little Dog.......2002-03-19
This book isn't meant to be an all inclusive guide to owning a corgi, as the writers admit to early on in the book. I've already read those types of books, but I was looking for something different to give a friend who is considering getting a corgi. It is charming and nailed dead on what living with a corgi is like. I've "been owned" by a pembroke for 10 years now and I recognized a lot of behaviours and characteristics familiar to this breed. It's a fun read with lots of great photos for anyone contemplating the purchase of a corgi. It discusses their health issues, personality traits, physicality, along with their intriguing history and myth. It's honest about both the good and bad points of the breed. I think this book makes an excellent complement to other more detailed sources on corgis and addresses what they never could = just how wonderful these little dogs are. A must for anyone seriously considering sharing their lives with a corgi.
Coffee table book.......2001-07-16
I was looking for info on training my corgi in the various categories mentioned in the review - obedience, agility, herding. No methods were discussed, only that the corgi can be trained to do these things. The book did give addresses of clubs that might help with these tasks. Not the reference book I was looking forward to, more of a coffee table book. The little story, poem?, about how corgis came from the wee folk was excellent and somewhat redeemed the book. All in all, I was a little disappointed.
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Family Friend and Farmhand.......2001-05-24
This is the best book on the Pembroke Welsh Corgi that I have found. The author covers everything from the history, buying, health, grooming, versatility of the breed (obedience, agility, herding and therapy dog). Every picture and every bit of information are all breed specific. That is what I like about this book. It has a wealth of information and I learned what sets the Pembroke Welsh Corgi apart from other breeds.
Book Description
It is long overdue that someone took a closer look at the brilliant Mary Sidney. I have a suspicion that Mary Sidney’s life, and especially her dedication to the English language after her brother’s death, may throw important light on the mysterious authorship of the Shakespeare plays and poems.

Mark Rylance
Actor; Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, 1996–2006; Chairman of the Shakespearean Authorship Trust
For more than two hundred years, a growing number of researchers have questioned whether the man named William Shakespeare actually wrote the works attributed to him. There is no paper trail for William Shakespeare—no record that he was ever paid for writing, nothing in his handwriting but a few signatures on legal documents, no evidence of his presence in the royal court except as an actor in his later years, no confirmation of his involvement in the literary circles of the time. With so little information about this man—and even less evidence connecting him to the plays and sonnets—what can and what can’t we assume about the author of the greatest works of the English language?
For the first time,
Robin P. Williams presents an in-depth inquiry into the possibility that Mary Sidney Herbert, the Countess of Pembroke, wrote the works attributed to the man named William Shakespeare. As well educated as Queen Elizabeth I, this woman was at the forefront of the literary movement in England, yet not allowed to write for the public stage. But that’s just the beginning . . .
The first question I am asked by curious freshmen in my Shakespeare course is always, “Who wrote these plays anyway?” Now, because of Robin Williams’ rigorous scholarship and artful sleuthing, Mary Sidney Herbert will forever have to be mentioned as a possible author of the Shakespeare canon. Sweet Swan of Avon doesn’t pretend to put the matter to rest, but simply shows how completely reasonable the authorship controversy is, and how the idea of a female playwright surprisingly answers more Shakespearean conundrums than it creates...

Customer Reviews:
A name by any other name is... the WRONG name!.......2006-12-28
While I neither profess to be a scholar on the subject of the Shakespeare authorship question, nor am I particularly well versed on the goings-on of the Elizabethan era, I have been fascinated for decades with the ongoing debate of who wrote Shakespeare.
When I earned my degree in English literature, university professors young and old tenaciously voiced their opinions concerning the credibility someone other than the man William Shakespeare actually wrote the plays and sonnets that we so carelessly attribute to WS today. (I say carelessly because of the widespread disagreement that exists regarding his life and what we've been taught). In short, it was a fascinating classroom debate. Students and instructors alike would argue for and against the possibility that WS was anything more than what we can prove today: an actor and litigious property owner with illiterate daughters who divorced his wife and left her his second-best bed in his will.
Robin P. Williams avoids pontificating that William Shakespeare is not the author of the works (despite the fact that no one can prove WS had a higher education, including an ability to read or write in French, Latin, and Italian--quite necessary because all but three plays are based on original literary works written in these three languages; nor does the name William Shakespeare appear in any of the extensive royal court registries, including the omission of even a single piece of handwritten manuscript!). On the contrary, in Sweet Swan of Avon: Did a Woman Write Shakespeare?, Williams provides one of the most exciting and socially volatile books ever on this subject by NOT debunking William Shakespeare, per se, but rather by EDUCATING readers about a woman who I suspect most have never heard of before, and who deserves recognition of her spectacular literary accomplishments.
It is the unfolding of such historical information Williams provides regarding Mary Herbert Sidney, the Countess of Pembroke, that one must recognize that for all the missing pieces of information, including the outrageously generous speculation that WS somehow learned his wealth of knowledge embedded in the works by "meeting people who shared their stories" (which of course cannot be proven), isn't it worth merely ASKING the question: Couldn't someone else have written these works?
Of course someone else could have written the works. Anyone documented in history as having spent a single day among the aristocracy... or who spoke more than one language... or who had an education that extended beyond public grade school is, in fact, more capable of having contributed the greatest works in the English language than our beloved William Shakespeare. The point is that once we examine the life of Mary Herbert Sidney, not only is her well-documented life vastly more in tune to the subject matter of the plays and sonnets than is William Shakespeare's, but also hers is a life that once copious significant facts are unveiled, one discovers enough historical overlap between Mary and William that behooves a closer investigation.
Sweet Swan of Avon is this investigation; it is not a trial, nor is it meant to be. For all the hundreds of years we've been told stories about the man William Shakespeare--from downright lies to conjecture to poorly stated facts--there is a woman named Mary Sidney who has been grossly overlooked by historians as a profound contributor to the literary annals, and now thanks to Robin P. Williams, her story is finally being told. Whether Mary's story is the story behind the Shakespearean cannon remains to be seen, but her story inarguably deserves to be told and celebrated because of her undeniable accomplishments--known, unknown, and just unfolding.
Interesting and well researched .......2006-12-17
Robin Williams (the writer, not the movie star) does a fine job of showing why it is very possible that Mary Sydney actually authored many of the best Shakespearean works. I was a skeptic, but the more I read, the more I began to think it quite feasible. We probably will never really know who wrote which works, but this book is very thought-provoking and interesting. Also, it is beautifully constructed, as befits a book on such a beloved topic.
Totally convinced by the 3rd Page.......2006-10-06
I heard Robin P. Williams discuss her book on a radio show and was very intrigued. I read it and was completely convinced before the end of the first chapter. What nailed it for me? William Shakespeare's mother, father, wife and 2 of his 3 children were illiterate. There is no way that the author of Shakespeare would allow his children to sign their name with an X. The other thing that sold me was the simple fact that writers write best about what they know. The plays and sonnets are basically the life and times of Mary Herbert Sidney-- she's related to 2/3 of the characters in the history plays. But that is only the beginning. If nothing else, this book introduces you to an amazing figure in English history and literature. To think that the greatest writer of the English language is (or could be) a woman-- a mother, a sister, a daughter, a wife-- just blows me away. And as a woman reading the sonnets, for the first time they made complete sense. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Response to reviewer, Crumulus.......2006-09-14
Reviews on this page are meant to come from people who have read the book. It's obvious from Crumulus's "review" that he has not.
Having actually read the book, I can attest that author Robin Williams NEVER CLAIMS that William Shakespeare was a woman. And her clear review of the documented evidence makes an incredibly strong case for Mary Sidney Herbert as the author of the plays and sonnets. Apparently, based on the reviews below, other readers have come to this same conclusion.
Readers depend on this venue to help understand something about a book. An ignorant diatribe based on one's own fantasy is a disservice to others.
Complete nonsense.......2006-09-06
This book should contain exactly one page with the word "NO!" spelled out in very large letters and 300 blank pages following it.
I don't care how much the author knows about Mary Sidney Herbert, a.k.a. the Countess of Pembroke, the fact is that we know a lot more about Shakespeare than we know about Mary Sidney. Come to think of it, we know more about William Shakespeare than any of his contemporaries, yet no one questions the authorship of Marlowe or Ben Johnson or Robert Greene or Bacon.
I have some ideas about why some academicians WANT to raise questions about the authorship of Shakespeare's works but none of them are savory.
I don't care how much Robin P. Williams or Jeremy Irons want to believe that Shakespeare was a woman, the fact is that HE was not and we're quite sure of it.
Anyone who cares to find out about Shakespeare needs to be steered in the direction of Stephen Greenblatt and for criticism in the direction of Stanley Cavell, A.C. Bradley, and McGinn's new book on Shakespeare's Philosophy.
Three stars for historical digging into the life of someone who matters entirely too little (M.S.H.), zero stars for producing nonsense.
Also, zero stars to anyone who thinks this is the kind of work that should be taken seriously.
