Book Description
Experiencing the World's Religions provides a clear and compelling account of religion as a diverse, lived experience by peoples around the world. Global in its coverage, the text conveys the vitality and richness of the world's religions as a living cultural wellspring that not only concerns systems of belief but how those beliefs are expressed in ceremonies, food, clothing, art, architecture, pilgrimage, scripture, and music. The text demonstrates why an understanding of the world's religions enriches our lives. In an engaging narrative emphasizing the experience of religion, the text takes students on a personal voyage through doctrines, history, the religiously inspired arts, ceremonies, and everyday expressions of belief and combines these with powerful photographs from around the globe. The text goes beyond traditional approaches to personally connect students with the vitality of the great religions and how they reach into the lives of individuals and the culture at large. This fourth edition has been thoroughly updated in both content and illustration, to address recent world events and political changes, and provide additional insight into current theory and practice.

First Impressions Review.......2007-05-14
Thank you very much for the experience, although, being that I reside in the State of Hawaii, I was a little "foggy" once I purchased the product. I could not find anywhere on the page on how to adjust the "shipping", is it "because" I live in Hawaii that I am only allowed the "standard" media mail option? There is no such thing as 2-3 business day shipping? I would really like this clarified before purchasing again. I am willing to pay more for the shipping, as long as I can receive my product in a timely manner. If I need to allow additional time for "standard shipping", then I need to know! Because I am definitely planning on purchasing again now that I have gone back to school! Thank you very much for your time.

I Wish I Could Combine Them All.......2007-05-03
I've used several college religion texts through the years. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. EXPERIENCING THE WORLD'S RELIGIONS is no exception. I especially like the chapters on Hinduism and modern religious expressions. This book comes close to labeling post-modernity without actually going out on a limb to predict the future. The last chapters elevate this book beyond the norm for religious textbooks. The author includes a personal experience (which I like) in each chapter and a hypothetical experience for the reader (which I find distracting) opens each chapter. It doesn't put quite as much emphasis on basic (oral) religions as some texts. For instance, I wish it had a little more on Native American and Traditional African religions.
This is an excellent text for the instructor who is able to bring supplemental material into the classroom. Someone embarking on a private study of world religions should not feel as if the surface has been scratched until more than one text is read. I also reviewed RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD by Hopfe & Woodward. The two texts compliment each other nicely.
Perfect.......2007-02-19
I got my book in record time. I ordered it on a friday, and got it on Monday, when I needed it for school. I did not have any problems during the entire process. I highly recommend this seller to everyone.
good but could have gotten here sooner.......2006-02-17
i like it, got here in perfect condition, just took about 2-3 weeks
See the world in a different light........2006-01-16
I found this text book to be clear and easy to read. Very understandable in many key points of various of religions. It has clear definitions and incredible photos.
Very good intro, a little odd design..........2005-09-23
As introductions to various religions go, this book has quite a good approach. Since it's written in American English for a Western audience, it takes care to show where the original linguistic parts for all the terms come from and rough translations of what they actually mean compared to what they fully mean in order that the reader may get to understand the religion in its own terms. It also doesn't do what a lot of failures-for-intros do, which is assume the reader is Christian and speak of everything in terms of its comparison to Christianity.
It not only looks at key-terms, but history, art, effects of it on the outside world and the outside world on it, and how it exists in the modern day. All of these points are useful.
While each chapter isn't necessarily a full-blown account of every facet of the religion it deals with, it goes beyond just giving a simple outline and takes some time to try to explain things, along with giving references to resources for further study by personal interest. This is a very good thing.
However, the author, Michael Molloy, chose to do an interesting thing with this book. Sometimes he switches into a second-person mode to try to bring the reader into the subject he's talking about. Unfortunately, second-person is so difficult to write and ill-advised. I couldn't help reading, "You do this," and thinking, "Oh I do, don't I?" as a sort of natural resistance to an unnamed authority. I don't know if this is a personal response of if many people just automatically assume such resistances, but all I know is that I'm not much one for Choose-Your-Own adventure.
Second-person isn't the only odd thing he does with the structure of the book. He often ends the chapters in first person, which is just as distracting and also begs the question, "Well, if the first part was all about me, why is the last part all about you?" Simple things like that can become distracting, and I believe it would have been better to present such material in one particular case. I know this weighs down a lot of the writing and makes it difficult to care about (as it will be mostly students in introductory college courses reading this book, not people personally interested), but I'd rather be spending my time getting all the information from the book than trying to force my mind not to argue with the exposition.

Hmmmm!.......2007-03-09
Speaking for myself it didn't do much for me, I didn't realize it was so old.
A Must Read for business people.......2007-01-19
If you haven't read this book, you need to! I bought this copy for a friend. It was in very good shape, no obvious wear, and of course, it is a very good read. Highly Reccommended!
It ain't changed in the Boardroom.......2006-08-24
This book, taken with due care, is still the Bible for how to dress for success. There have been some contemporary changes in business dress. But if you are not a rock star or a computer whiz, don't bet your career that dressing like one will get you to the Executive Suite.
Look instead in business periodicals and you will see that almost all of the top dogs in power positions dress as though they were Malloy's models. Those who want to get there someday will dress as though they already are.
I say as a business consultant that this book has enhanced more careers than a lot of the Business Schools have done. A great deal of career success is all tied up in other's perception of you.
21 year old managers wearing pinstripe in a godawful blue/purple color with a shirt with a neck two sizes too small because they hear that pinstripe is 'powerful'. Older men wearing 'Cool Business' thinking it makes them seem more dynamic and 'with it'. Men allowing their wives or girlfriends to dress then for business. Guys wearing ties that make you wonder if their team lost or they're pledging a frat. Men wearing brown suits to a management meeting. All doomed to make their career progression a lot harder than it has to be.
Take the straight route. The tried and true. Do not fall for the lines about how 'things have changed'. If things have changed, why do the President and most Senators - where the projection of power and confidence are critical - still dress straight from 'Dress For Success'?
Your first impression and perception by others is fast - and permanent. Molloy's book is the inside lane on how to make a great impression and reflect a perception of executive capability.
A dandy is a flash chap.......2006-06-20
A "dandy" was in the 19th century a man who dressed in the latest styles. For example, he was careful to wear a top hat and thunder and lightning trousers in the 1840s.
Ironically, the original "dandy", "Beau" Brummell, an intimate of the Prince Regent, recommended in place of cheap flash attire dressing with utmost care, neatly and soberly. He moderated the *incroyable* fashions of the *jeunesse doree* of the 1790s, who'd adopted extreme fashion in reaction to the Puritanism of Robespierre.
John Molloy's book is completely out of date. Ask your boss what you should wear to work. But following the precepts of the original "dandy", Beau Brummell, dressing neatly and cleanly, should always work.
Don't wear board shorts to work unless you work in a beachside cafe.
dated, but the best I've found.......2006-05-22
I'm leaving the military, and read this book on the advice of a couple different headhunter firms. It is a little out of date, but still is a great book.
Here are some great quotes: "You do not want to look like Lou Costello with his pants under his armpits, and you do not want to [sag and] look like a member of the lower middle class." (pg 47). [If your cuffs are higher than 5.5 inches from your thumb], you will look like a Broadway crapshooter, a fashion model, or a dandy." (pg 52). "You can, if you are already very rich and very successful, or if you desire to have an affair with an Italian contessa, wear silk shirts." (pg 71). "You will never, ever, as long as you live, wear a short-sleeve shirt for any business purpose, no matter whether you are the office boy or the president of the company..." (pg 86). "When we showed the picture with the monogram showing, the answers were not positive; in fact seventeen percent of the respondents identified him as a hooker-booker." (pg 87) "One of the things that made the evening so memorable was that at one point all of the young men got together, put their hands on a Beatles album, and swore that they would never, ever, ever, wear a tie." (pg 92). "Do not wear [a bow tie] to business unless you are a clown, a college professor, or a social commentator." (pg 115).
I could go on and on. This guy is hilarious, intentionally or not, and gives some good general fashion advice. Sure, things have changed a little, and the "four pages of full color photos" are a little '80s looking, but reading this book will save you from many fashion mistakes. At least it has caused me to develop an agenda as I shop for suits, and I have planned my interview attire.
The best part is at the beginning, when he tells you not to listen to your wife. My wife always tells me what to wear, and it's nice to have a legit book that I can cite when I don't listen to her. It's true, the surveys and facts cited aren't particularly academically rigorous, but it's worth heeding, none the less. As a testament of the quality of this read, just look at the cover- despite being forged during the fashion nightmare of the '70s and '80s, the dark pinstripe suit, white shirt and tie are very appropriate, even today. That's his whole point- eschew fashion for the time tested, well respected look. It's a starting point, at least.
The controversial point about Afros and hair grease for Hispanics is not controversial, in my book. He's not saying they're bad- he's just saying that in his experience, ethnic looks do not sell well to people from different demographics, which is probably true, even today. He also advises Southerners not to wear cowboy hats and bolo ties to NYC, and that doesn't seem to have stirred up controversy. In my opinion, that's the exact same thing. He's not telling people they can't dress as they like- he's just pointing out that any difference from the norm does not maximize your efficacy.
This book is a definite buy, particularly as cheaply as it is offered used. And by the way, does anyone know what a "dandy" is?

Common Sense Approach to Rules.......2006-11-10
I think this book is great. I am a young (under 30), short girl. Do you know how hard it is to be taken seriously in an all-male manufacturing environment? These are classy ways to still be a woman and taken like the professional I am. I notice the difference in obeying the rules and then sometimes just wearing whatever I want. This book is valid to my career. I am a Finance Manager, the financial consultant to the business.
Overall good but, very outdated .......2006-11-04
Good overall message about dressing professional but, the clothing styles he writes about are from the 1980's.
Not very helpful for business casual.......2006-11-03
I appreciate John Molloy's research into business clothing; however, this book is only helpful if you work in a company where clothing is not too casual, or if you need to figure out what to wear for job interviews. If every day is "business casual" at your job, this book will help you figure out the best colors and quality, but it won't help you understand what to wear. John advocates always wearing a business-like skirt when possible, and always having a jacket on hand. In my job as a computer programmer, where most men where slacks and polo shirts, this would be too formal.
The book is somewhat repetitive, but it helps to drill the right attitude into your mind - clothes are important, quality is very important, and navy blue is always a good choice. There are a few black-and-white illustrations, but they seem outdated to me.

Still Relevant For Today.......2006-07-15
I was never a fan of Malloy's books when I first read them in the 1980s and 1990s. But I must admit that his basic principles hold true today. Classic attire is best for interviews and companies (such as pharmaceutical sales) that are still traditional suits-only fields. He is also correct when he says that the fashion industry works against professional attire for women, and that if you are excessively stylish in a corporate setting, you will lose credibility. Changing fashion styles are an incredible waste of money. However, you should disregard the outdated suits, rigid hairstyles and hard attache case in favor of more contemporary classic styles. A better book for that is "Dressing Smart" by Chic Simple Author Kim Johnson-Gross. Moreover, if you work in a creative field, you must not follow the navy & white starched formula of dressing--this could get you demoted. Malloy does mention this point, but doesn't really advise for creative jobs.
read it and do what it says.......2006-03-22
All women should read it and do what it says. As a manager, I know what high importance is placed on presentation. In the workplace today, people have become too casual. Why not do all you can to earn more money, gain more respect and be percieved optimally as a professional? It is very easy for women to make wardrobe mistakes at the office today because of the sexy and casual fashions we see in all the stores. This is a bible for the working woman!

Customer Reviews:
This book is RIGHT. I'm sure it works. .......2007-01-03
I bought this book, determined to follow the advice and get my own husband. As I read it though, I realized that I didn't want a husband bad enough to do the simple, normal things required to get one. I follow the recipe for staying single, almost to the letter. That's why I have been single from the time I was 18 until now and I am 53, almost 54. You get that book and then after you read it, either do what it says to do and get married, or keep on doing what you're doing now and quit griping cause you're single - just like I had to.
An old ex friend of mine followed the advice without fail. She was married within one year. Two years later, they're still sparkling with pleasure in their relationship. :))
I am AMAZED at the negative feedback. They're shooting the messenger because they don't like the message. Their feedback tells a lot more about them, than it does about the book.
Good Book.......2006-11-30
I thought this book was really good. It puts a lot into perspective for single women in their late 20's and early 30's who truly want to get married. I do NOT think this book is for the ones who want to RE-marry. I'm sure finding "another" husband is a little different the second time around because you're divorced, not "never married." The book helped me identify a string of men who I have dated in the past and helped me to understand the stringers, etc. I think the stages of a relationship is very important as well. It provides a blue print for relationships. I do believe that women who have a nice appearance and are attractive do have better luck because they have a wider pool of potentials. I also believe that you have to be committed to the idea and really put yourself in a place to meet eligible men. I also think this book provides reasons that most men do not reveal. As in "why didn't they call?" Most women wonder why and begin calling the guy and making fools of themselves as opposed to chalking it up as "you didn't live up to his expectations." And there's nothing wrong with that because women do it all of the time. It's about reaching mutual expectations.
I'm 31, successful, highly educated, beautiful (or so I'm constantly told) and have finally decided and committed to the idea that I want to get married. Based on the books advice, I have identified some potentials and discarded the rest (the ones I would have normally kept) and I will let you know how it goes.
Statistically Speaking.......2006-09-25
John Malloy teaches women how to find the right man using valid stats and information. A very good tool, not that much fun to read, however.
Catering to the Man?.......2006-07-28
I found this book a bit old-fashioned. I just turned 40, was married once, and have been in the dating scene for 5 yrs now-- still single with no long-term (more than a year) dating companion. However I'm discouraged that if one of the only ways a single over 40 woman has a chance of finding a mate is being THIN, then I probably dont want to get married ANYWAY. (I'm still attractive, but on the plumper side- 5'10, 219) I want to find a book, instead that focuses on how to help "older" women find love by loving themselves and focusing on their INNER beauty. Look at all those gorgeous BBW's and BBW dating sites out there. The movement is growing because so many more Americans are having problems. There are men who will love you for who you are-- if not, then someone needs to work on re-socializing them in the early stages to assure better partnerships for everyone in the future. Sorry, but after 40, we women start to fade a bit...its GREAT to stay as healthy as possible, but this book is unrealstic.
Read it, understand it and then judge it.......2006-06-08
It seems nobody has reviewed this book for a couple of years with a basic understanding of what it's about.
It's a guide to help get a man to marry you. It's based on research of the "market research" variety, which is good enough for selling Coke and Ford and should work for selling relationships (which most people want more than they want a car - most people seem to want cars to get a relationship). It's written in an informative but light-hearted way.
A lot of people in these reviews don't like the book (some who've only read a few pages). My contributions to the war:
Firstly, the book is for women who want to get married - if you don't want to get married (or at least not any time in the next 5 years) don't read it.
Second - it's qualitative research. That means you don't need big numbers you just need the right people - and he has both the right people and the numbers.
Third - weight takes up less than 1 of the 200 pages. Another is dedicated to why 20% of never-married women in their 40s would do it the same all over again. There's actually more space spent on how to maximise your chances with good-looking men than there is on weight. And that doesn't include looking good yourself.
Is the advice obvious? Well, a lot of it is straightforward. But some isn't. The reviewer who said they needed to be 26 before getting married missed the point - the majority of men need to be that age (or older if they've been to college) before they seriously think about marriage. Do their spouses? No - so if you're a 20-year-old-woman planning on finding a spouse not a boyfriend, check out the 25+ crew.
And to those good-looking women who thought the book had nothing to say to them - please read the other 199 pages. To the plump, sassy crowd - please read the other 199 pages. The biggest drawcard isn't looks.
In summary - it's good advice with sound research behind it. It's not for everyone 'cause not everyone wants to get married in the near future. But if that's you, you probably couldn't do better than this as a guide to hooking him.

More Austin than San Antonio.......2006-10-09
Excellent book, very descriptive but there are more Austin trails than SA trails. Some of the trails in this book have become our faves and we would never have found them without the book.
Hiking in Austin.......2005-10-19
This is a good basic book for finding the public hiking trails that are on the beaten path. It is very useful to find what is publically available. It isn't for finding those paths that are hard to find.
I do recommend it.

Native Know-how.......2000-04-04
As a native Floridian who has lived as far south as the FL Keys and as far north as the Pan Handle, I turned critical eye on Johnny Molloy's "The Best in Tenting Camping:Florida". I was delighted to see included some of my favorite destinations as well as places other locals have long prized as remnants of the "real Florida". As an experienced kayak camper I particularly appreciated Mr. Molloy's inclusion of information on paddling opportunities. He has provided new information on put-in destinations as well as coaxed me into my many new trail hiking experiences. I find this book accurate in it's assesements and helpful in it's suggestions. When in Florida, keep your sunscreen, fishing pole and copy of "The Best in Tent Camping: Florida" close at hand.
Thanks Johnny for teaching a local few new tricks!
Planning on car camping in FL? You must have this book!.......2000-03-22
Planning a trip through FL can lead you through an overwhelming amount of where to stay options. Fortunately,"The Best in Tent Camping Florida" is the perfect guide to help you sift through all your choices and narrow down your search for that perfect place to stay. He has a great rating system for each campground and it is based on beauty, site privacy, spaciousness, quiet, security and cleanliness. He even gives advice on interesting sites worth seeing while you are there. He has really picked out the best of the best Florida has to offer for us "tenters".
Firsthand knowlegde & a frank discussion on each campground........1999-06-07
The person that wrote this book would make a great campground neighbor! He gives a frank review that allow realistic expectations for the prospective camper. Also suggests site #'s that would be less likely to be placed next to a noisy RV. I use this book along with Campers Guide to Florida (2nd Edition), by Mickey Little before I take any camp trip. The Tent Camping book has all the information, but the Campers Guide has campground maps. Makes a great combination!
