Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

The Penguin Classics debut that inspired a classic film and a current Broadway revival

Reginald Rose's landmark American drama was a critically acclaimed teleplay, and went on to become a cinematic masterpiece in 1957 starring Henry Fonda, for which Rose wrote the adaptation. A blistering character study and an examination of the American melting pot and the judicial system that keeps it in check, Twelve Angry Men holds at its core a deeply patriotic belief in the U.S. legal system. The story's focal point, known only as Juror Eight, is at first the sole holdout in an 11-1 guilty vote. Eight sets his sights not on proving the other jurors wrong but rather on getting them to look at the situation in a clear-eyed way not affected by their personal biases. Rose deliberately and carefully peels away the layers of artifice from the men and allows a fuller picture of America, at its best and worst, to form.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars an amazing dramatic experience.......2006-10-03

Based on Reginald rose's teleplay, which then became an Academy Award nominated film, TWELVE ANGRY MEN is dynamite listening. The cast is stellar, including Dan Castellaneta (remembered for the voice of Homer Simpson); Jeffrey Donovan (to be seen in Sundance's Come Early Morning); Hector Elizondo (Pretty Woman and the Princess Diaries); Robert Foxworth (who played juror #3 on Broadway); James Gleason (The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd); Kevin Kilner (Shopgirl); Richard Kind (Spin City, Curb Your Enthusiasm); Armin Shimerman (Star Voyager); and Joe Spano (Hill Street Blues).

As they've shown in the past, LA Theatre works presents the best in audio drama, always offering award worthy performances by gifted actors before a live audience. Twelve Angry Men is one more amazing dramatic experience.

As most know, the Twelve Angry Men comprise a jury that is charged with determining the fate of a 19-year-old boy who stands accused of murdering his father. The action takes place during one afternoon as their deliberations reveal the biases and character of each man. This is a drama that has stood the test of time, speaking to us as eloquently today as it did some 50 years ago.

Riveting listening!

- Gail Cooke

4 out of 5 stars "The burden of proof is on the prosecution... that's in the Constitution.".......2006-09-23

Twelve Angry Men is one of those American classics that has grown more memorable over the years, an examination of a judicial system that allows each man his day in court with a jury of his peers. Although written in 1954, the play remains relevant in its intent. Juror Eight is pivotal, the one man who refuses to take the easy way out, requesting a logical examination of the facts before jumping to conclusions. The result of this one man's stand is significant, a gradual shifting of opinions as the other jurors speak their personal concerns, assumptions and general willingness to participate in the process in a meaningful way.

Each of the jurors, like Americans in general, brings his own mind set into the jury room. The evidence as presented acceptable to the majority, the first inclination of the majority is to vote the accused guilty. To further complicate the drama, the room is unbearably hot, some of the jurors anxious to escape the sweltering crucible of the small space, unwilling to put in the time or energy necessary to reach common agreement. Yet Juror Eight holds out, refusing to give in to the pressure of the more verbal jurors, calmly arguing the facts of the case and asking his fellow members to reconsider their opinions. Over time, the more thoughtful members become willing to discuss the troublesome aspects of the case before them, although those who have no patience chafe at the changing of opinion.

The beauty of this play lies in its simplicity, democracy in its purest and most practical form, when a single voice speaks to reasoned consideration. Despite the complexities of the various personalities and their views on crime, law and order and life in general, reason prevails, each character opening to the extraordinary experience of sharing opinions, calmly discussing the pertinent details of the case and reaching a decision based on more than impulse. While the play is dated by the composition of a twelve-man jury, commonplace at the time, the message is unchanged by the intervening years. As simple as its premise, Twelve Angry Men is a civics lesson in play form, a reminder of the legal tenets of a Democratic society. Luan Gaines/2006.

5 out of 5 stars Twelve Angry Men.......2006-02-22

We have just finished this reading this play in my Lit. Class( 7th grade) and I actually really enjoyed it! It mostly centers around the theme of the courage to be different and standing up for one's own beliefs. What surprised me the most was at the end, Juror #3 gives up because he is afraid to stand alone in contrast to Juror #8 who was the only one in the beg. of the play who believed that maybe the boy wasn't really guilty and that he deserved a fair decision made by the jury members. This is also written by the same author who wrote the play "Thunder on Sycamore Street" which also deals with basically the same themes.

4 out of 5 stars Good service.......2005-10-25

Book was in good condition. Shipment arrived in the specified time frame.

4 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Get Much Better.......2005-09-07

Twelve Angry Men is undoubtedly one of the best dialogue-driven stories of modern times. I would recommend that everyone be exposed to this story in either book, play or movie format sometime in their life. However, for anyone who has difficulty with reading or concentration, this particular format may prove somewhat difficult. The characters do not have names but only go by "Juror #1," "Juror #2," etc. It can be difficult to keep up with which character is which. Otherwise, one of the best stories around.

Book Description

Games Babies Play is a collection of activities that keep pace with baby’s changing abilities. Each section includes developmental information, fun routines, songs, and rhymes.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great little book .......2007-04-22

I originally had this book on loan from the library when my baby was 7 weeks- about the time you start to wonder how you are supposed to fill the hours with your curious little bundle. Anyway, after having used the book so much I went ahead and purchased a copy. Love how it's a small book and the ideas (games/rhymes, etc) are sectioned out by age. Some of the rhymes or activities seem a little odd and ancient, and I wonder about their origin, but I've used enough of the material to make it a worthwhile and recommended purchase for new parents.

4 out of 5 stars Good ideas for new parents.......2006-02-09

When our baby was born I was of the mind set that I didn't want to rely on everyone else for child raising ideas. This put me in a difficult position because I've never been around babies before. So, I put away my pride but kept searching for ideas on my own too. That's how I found this book. Lansky has included a lot of great ideas for helping you interact with your baby in creative ways. I agree that it is not perfect (and am not sure that any book really is), but this can be easily overlooked due to the other very redeeming qualities.

1 out of 5 stars Games we'd play anyway and some NEVER.......2005-02-26

So I'm flipping through the book and thinking "Did I actually pay money for this?". So many of the activities were things that I (and many other parents) are already doing with our babies. Like playing with rattles, talking to your baby while looking in the mirror, kicking at toys, pointing to objects and saying the sounds they make, peek-a-boo, waving bye-bye... you get the idea. But the moment I knew I wanted to get my refund was when in the 0-3 months section, the author suggested going to the hardware store to buy a blank set of keys to put on a strong ring to "make great noise and be cool teethers". The thought of my infant's delicate gums knawing away at the sharp edges of metal keys--YIKES!!

4 out of 5 stars Informative, but not colorful enough.......2004-07-08

It's a good little book that can definitely help people who had no prior experience in baby handling. As a first time parent, I really appreciate the help!

Vicky Lansky offers a book that is organized by appropriateness for each quarter of baby's first year, and includes wide variety of play activities. Each sector of the book (0-3 mo., 3-6 mo., etc.) is preceded by the summary of developmental milestones.

However, in comparison to Baby Play (Gymboree) by Wendy S., Dr. Masi, Roni Cohen, Dr. Leiderman, this book lacks pictorial support. I have encountered a couple of activities that are not easy to follow just by reading the instructions. A simple picture or a photograph would eliminate this problem.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet & Simple.......2004-01-31

Tiny little book, broken up into birth to 3 months, 3-6 mo, 6-9 mo & 9-12 mo (95 pages) Quick and easy ideas for having fun with your little one.. this would make a nice gift for a baby sitter too! Sweet little book.

Beyond Joseph Campbell and the much ballyhooed hero's journey, Michael Chase Walker takes the aspiring screenwriter into the rarely discusses alternative structures of outlaw stories, inverted myths and Messiah tales.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Earned a Spot Next to McKee's "Story" on my Favorites Shelf.......2005-03-07

This book serves up what I believe every good book on writing technique should: a smorgasbord of useful recipes and theories to experiment with and blend into your own writing.

I found Mr. Walker's buffet to include 12 delicious dishes, some more delectable than others.

Choice number one (he calls them stages) is Theme. Yes, he calls it "Theme". That word seems out of vogue these days with other writers refering to this concept as "the controlling idea", "subjective story argument", "premise" or "story's promise". We are talking here about what you are trying to "say" or better yet "prove" in your story. This is the steak behind the sizzle.

Mr. Walker does a fine job of helping us organize this concept using a sentence structure like "blank - leads to - blank". A simple and straight-forward way of looking at the idea behind your story, much akin to McKee's "controlling idea".

Next is the three act structure. Not much new here except his recommendation that you use the subjective story theme sentence (blank - leads to - blank) as an overlay on the three-act template in order to get an idea what each act in your story will primarily be about.

Third he discusses "premise", and it is the concept of premise I most agree with. The premise as "external" story-line. Using the word "when" to preface the inciting incident then an active verb and the result of that action you can develop what some call a "logline" for your story; the story in a sentence. I found this to be a quite helpful chapter.

Fourth Walker delves into the "heroes journey" ala Vogler/Campbell with several original and inciteful twists. This section on the story's structure is brilliant and worth the price of the book by itself. It was my absolute favorite part of the book.

The fifth stage is internal structure, covered in depth with many details regarding the character's inner flaw, desires, motivations, background (he calls this shadow), and growth through conflict.

Sixth we have a short chapter on character relationships, not as tasty as the preceding chapters.

Next is writing a working treatment; ditto to the above.

Eighth is a long and useful chapter on choosing and developing the world of your story, the setting. I really enjoyed this one and got many new ideas for my own work from Mr. Walkers incites and suggestions of how certain settings better reflect and compliment certain themes.

Next is a fairly lengthy and somewhat interesting discussion of genre. I didn't find this as useful to my own work or inciteful/new as the previous chapter.

Tenth is a short chapter on research ... hohum.

Next a short chapter on image systems.

And finally a couple pages about breaking the story down scene by scene. This is a very important stage, and I have read much more detailed advice in other books. I wish this one was longer.

Walker wraps up with a short troubleshooting section.

To sum up the sections on theme, premise, the hero's journey (a fresh look) and setting are wonderful, and worth the price of the book alone. I recommend "Power Screenwriting" and think every screenwriter (or fiction writer) could benefit from at least one new concept in this book.

And as I said in the beginning, this is what I feel is the mark of a truely great and "useful" book on writing craft.

Thumbs up to Michael Chase Walker - "Power Screenwriting" is definitely a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Power Screenwriting is Required Reading.......2005-01-03

I have literally read thirteen books on screenwriting technique and story development and this one easily trumps every single one of them. I have used his guide on every screenplay I've ever completed, one of which is already in development.

If you are looking for a book which can expand your ideas into full-length screenplays without having to write to Hollywood's block-buster market, "Twelve Steps" will arm you with the perspective, creativity, courage and form to do so.

Among other things, Walker engages his readers in the creative process, developing one's own voice, and structuring that voice around ancient story-telling techniques (like the warrior myth). In twelve steps, you can easily expand a phrase like "tampering with nature | leads to | nature getting out of control" into an entire film like Jurassic Park. Piece by piece, bit by bit.

Don't get me wrong, the writing process is still long and does require substantial effort, but if you are committed and looking for a guide to take you to the next level, Twelve Steps is the only choice. Everyone has an idea, but unless you know how to cultivate it, it will never see the light of day.

3 out of 5 stars Stodgy and uninsightful.......2004-10-06

Judging from the subtitle (The 12 *Stages* of Story Development) and the back-cover blurb, with its claim to answer such questions as "I've written thirty pages of my script - where do I go from there?", one could expect this book to be about method, namely how to build a scenario, flesh it out, edit it, and present it for submission. In fact, only the last 15 out of 265 pages are really devoted to method, and the methodological contents of the book can be summarized in a small number of guidelines:
. write a 3-part plot outline (opening/body/ending),
. the number of pages in each part of the finished script should be 30-60-30,
. don't start writing until you can use your outline as a blueprint that you can develop without getting stuck,
. use dedicated software to find out exactly what should go into a script before submitting it.
I'm still kicking myself for wasting time reading the book back to back. Skipping to the last chapter after reading the first 3 "steps" (theme, 3-act template, premise) would have saved me considerable time and avoided exposure to sickening repetitiousness and bombast about the Hollywood script writer as a prophet of our time. What is referred to as a "step" is in the best of cases a form of summary or outline (e.g. theme, 3-act template) and in most cases a simple set of staple ingredients of dubious value (the hero as an orphan, the fairy tale as a myth taking place in a provincial world, etc.).

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Bunch!.......2004-03-08

This is simply the best screenwriting book I've read, and I've read them all. I am not a professional. I am a graduate student studying history, but I have always aspired to writing for the screen. If you want to read about style and format, this book is not what you are looking for. However, if you want to read about theme, premise, structure, character development and other important facets of screenwriting this book is right up your ally. After reading this book my passion for screenwriting was reinvigorated and am now finishing up my first script. I hope everyone finds this book as helpful as I did.

5 out of 5 stars The Screenwriter's Philosopher's Stone, Par Excellence.......2004-02-19

It's about being subversive! This famous quote from Quentin Tarantino in the movie, Sleep with Me , drives the central theme for Power Screenwriting: The 12 Stages of Story Development and makes it a classic, must own, guide for every aspiring story-teller. While so-many manuals exploit the 'get-rich' quick titillation of the big buck spec sale, Walker lends his formidable erudition and experience to guiding the writer inwardly to a more profound understanding of his craft, the power of archetypal structure, and the challenges every writer faces in casting off his own artifice, and striving for an original, creative mind. I found this book to be nothing less than a modern day philosopher's stone. It is quite simply, pure excellence. The best I've ever read on the subject and I've read them all.

Crockett Johnson, creator of the 1955 classic Harold and the Purple Crayon, also wrote a lovely, nonsensically philosophical collection of 12 stories about a little girl named Ellen and her conversations with her stuffed lion. Originally published in 1959, Ellen's Lion has an old-fashioned feel, but its explorations of child logic and imagination are universal and fresh, the perspective authentically childlike. In one story, Ellen pretends she is terrified of her pet lion and calls the police. The lion becomes impatient and annoyed. Ellen feels guilty: "I should have asked you if you ate people before I called a policeman," she says. The lion tells her she didn't use a real telephone. "'But I called a real policeman,' said Ellen." In another story, "Sad Interlude," Ellen displays sympathy for her "poor sad old lion." The lion is indignant:
"I'm never sad and never happy, never hungry or never full, never foolish or clever, or good or bad, or this or that, or anything else you imagine me to be—-"
"You poor thing," Ellen said, slowly, shaking her head. "You haven't any mother, either, have you?"
"Now you are being ridiculous," the lion said.
Children will have no trouble keeping up as the story slips from the real to the imaginary and back again. Out of print for two decades, this winning chapter book, complete with orange-hued, Harold-style illustrations, is sure to charm readers young and old. (Ages 5 to 8) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

Originally published in 1959 and out of print for two decades, this collection of very short stories chronicles Ellen’s relationship– complete with two-way conversations–with her floppy stuffed lion. Ellen’s temperament is a bit like Christopher Robin’s (though her appearance is a clone of Harold, from Harold and the Purple Crayon fame), but her lion is a no-nonsense, tougher-minded Pooh, with the voice of reason and reality to counter Ellen’s high-flying imagination. The stories range from fear of the dark and being sad to playing doctor, being a fairy princess, and dealing with a new toy that almost replaces lion.
Parents will find the subtly droll stories as entertaining as children, and a child who reads chapter books will find especially rewarding.

This book has been a favorite of our family's since we discovered it after our first child was born in 1986. Eighteen years later, we still read and quote from this book. Every child should have a lion like Ellen's. We are so glad it is out in a new edition. Our copy is getting a little ragged.

This boxed set contains 12 separate paperback books (Dover Thrift Editions). They're fairly compact and as such, will fit into my summer travel plans. The box itself is really nice (very solid); it looks pretty good on my shelf and I could see giving this set as a gift. At $15 for 12 books the price is pretty hard to beat.
