You can't go wrong.......2006-12-05
You can't go wrong with any book by Vivekananda. Not only was he a great scholar, he was a saint and mystic who had personally experienced the things he taught. This book gives an extremely clear description of Raja Yoga from both a practical and philosophical standpoint. The first half explains the philosophical concepts of Hinduism regarding the relationships between mind, matter, and spirit. The second half of the book walks you through the ancient Yoga Sutras.
A must for understanding human nature!.......2006-07-25

The author Swami Vivekananda was both an enlightened soul and an elequent speaker. His words are powerfull!

GREAT EXPOSITION.......2003-10-23
THIS BOOK CLEARLY DETAILS THE THEORY OF RAJA YOGA. IT'S SURPRSING TO SEE HOW EASY TO UNDERSTAND AND RELIABLE THE BOOK IS CONSIDERING THE PERIOD IN WHICH IT WAS WRITTEN. THIS IS NOT PRACTICAL INSTRUCTIONS IN RAJA YOGA THOUGH, FOR THAT YOU NEED ANOTHER BOOK OR A QUALIFIED TEACHER. I PARTICULARLY LIKE THE SECTION ON THE PRANA AND HOW THE AUTHOR EVALUTES THE VARIOUS RELIGIONS. ALSO, HE BRIFLY MENTIONS SANKARA AND HIS PHILOSOPHY. YOU MAY DOWNLOAD A FREE PDF COPY ON LINE.
PROS: CONTAINS THE YOGA SUTRAS AND COMMENTARY ON SAME. PROVIDES EXCELLENT THEORY THAT PROVIDES A SOLID BACKGROUND IN THE SUBJECT.
CONS: THIS IS MORE OF AN EXPOSITION ON RAJA YOGA INSTEAD OF IT'S ACTUAL PRACTICE.
Clear, Concise, Practical, Enlightening.......2002-05-30
4 stars seems a little under spoken, but The quality of the book is not what is questionable when dealing with an author of such stature. He is elegant, and eloquent in his explantions and commentary on the sutras. The only area I have disagreed with the author in his steadfast disagreement with left hand practices, but he was taught the way he was taught, and raised the way he was raised and to each his own. All in all a great book.

Patanjali's yoga sutras brought to life by a modern master.......2007-08-20
The collection of concise yoga sutras, put together by Patanjali are an important read for any yoga practitioner--teacher or enthusiast. Swami Satchidananda has translated the ancient text into meaningful and practical explanations which really apply to modern living. This is not just a one time read, but rather a wonderful guide to reflect upon often. The text is organized into four books geared to inspire and teach a yogic way of life. Yoga is not a religion of any sorts but rather an eight limbed path leading us from suffering to freedom. The details of how we develop this peace are all included in the book. I highly recommend this book in particular because of its clear and thoughtful translations.
easy reading, great comprehension.......2007-05-07
I love this book! Easy to read, simple explanations from Sri Swami Satchidananda, allows you to dive deeply on the true meaning of each Sutra. Truly a book commented by an enlightened soul.
Wonderful book!.......2007-04-11
I enjoy reading this book! The author quite obviously knows what he is talking about. He gives wonderful explanations and provides insights to the Yoga Sutras. I am learning a great deal from his commentaries on Pantanjali's humanity-benefiting work.
Thank you, Swami Satchinananda!
Could it be more condescending?.......2007-02-06
I have two other versions/interpretations of the yoga sutras. I was actually quit surpised by sutra 2 of this book. He refers to the "chitta vritti" as "mind stuff." Mind stuff? Please. How about a real explanation. Definately written for an American audience whom he regards as very simple. I read a couple more sutras but really couldn't take it as it was just ridiculous.
If you are the type of person who would be happy being told that there is "mind stuff" taking place inside your brain and it is far too complicated for you to understand then by all means buy this book. Otherwise, try the Four Chapters of Freedom. It offers much more thorough explainations and it treats its audience with respect.
How to tell a good commentary on the Sutras.......2007-01-04
How to choose a useful commentary on the Sutras? A rule of thumb is to examine the author's take on the first five sutras. These are the ones in which Patanjali defines what Yoga is and in a nutshell points to what the enlightened state is. Authors who have no idea either don't get this, or are not able to explicate it well. Satchidananda is one of the happy few who are able. An illustrative comment is on P7, in reference to Sutra 3: "You are that true Seer. You are not the body or the mind." The thing that makes the Satchidananda commentary reliable is that he never loses sight of that intrinsic point of the first, definitional sutras. Beyond a certain cultural context, Satchidananda does not abandon "no-body and no-mind" for a moralistic exhortation. He keeps clear sight of the concept-free nature of universal reality.
This version is not as good as the out-of-print The Authentic Yoga Sutras of P Y Deshpande, nor does it have the clarity of Osho's limited commentary - but it is miles ahead of commentaries of some of the more famous names in contemporary Yoga.

A Modern Judas.......2007-06-28
Donald Walters (formally known as Kriyananda) is a modern Judas.
Here you have a man, who only spent 3 years with Paramahansa Yogananda.
He joined the Self-Realization Fellowship (the organization Yogananda founded) Monastic Order in 1949 (Paramhansaji went into mahasamadhi in 1952).
He attains great spiritual heights, and even became a vice president for a short period of time.
Unfortunately, he felt he was better than disciples who were with Yogananda in the early 20's.
Walters was secretly trying to take control of the organization Yogananda founded (Self-Realization Fellowship). During in India, he was having sexual relations with women (as a monk he had taken a vow of celibacy) and was getting into big trouble with the Indian government. He also sold Sri Yukteswars ashram secretly.
Why would you take spiritual instruction from such a person? Even Kamala (Yogananda's Kriya Archarye since the 20's) said Kriyananda modified Yogananda's teachings.
So Walters was kicked out of SRF, and formed his own group called Ananda in the image of Self-Realization Fellowship. Now he is claiming the only way to get to God is through him, and the only way to get to Yogananda is through him.
This guy even now is having trouble with the law. He was banned from America and went to Italy. In Italy, the police were after him so he is now in India.
Did I mention he was married 6 times?
Even now, hundreds of his followers have taken him to court for sexual assault.
If you wanted Yogananda's teachings, where better to go? Why not go to the source. Why not go to the true place where Yogananda's teaching is being taught (The Self-Realization Fellowship)?
An Essential Guidebook to the Study and Practice of Yoga.......2006-05-10
This course is jam-packed with helpful insights into every aspect of the study and practice of Hindu yoga. No matter where you are in your yoga practice-beginner, intermediate, or advanced-this book and audio set will enhance your enjoyment and understanding. The Art and Science of Raja Yoga was drafted and produced by someone who really knows his business. Mr. Walters presents the history and essential teachings of yoga, the postures themselves, and even yogic dietary information in a clear and comprehensive manner. No other yoga handbook that I have seen comes close to this one. It contains everything one needs to master the subject. This is an essential guidebook for anyone interested in yoga.
A superb guide to yoga...........2005-06-26
This book is divided into 14 steps and each step is further divided into 7 subjects. The subjects are philosophy, yoga postures, breathing, routine, healing, diet and meditation. This enables the reader to understand the philosophy and purpose of the yoga postures more deeply. The only complaint I have about this book is that it was unable to go into a deeper detail about the yoga postures! But I guess that the author was forced to keep his book "short" because of space constraints.
The author's guru, Paramhansa Yogananda(who is also my divine guru) gave little emphasis on hatha yoga and more emphasis on kriya yoga. This is understandable because Yogananda simply did not have the time to dive deeper into the practices of hatha yoga. When J. Donald Walters told his Guru that there is nothing much more to write about, our Guru told him "There is MUCH MORE to be written!" Thus kriyananda has been following his Guru's advice and has written over seventy books which compliments Yogananda's teachings.
It is a grave mistake to think that the books published by SRF is the ONLY true teachings of Yogananda. This will undoubtly lead to dogmatism. Books by Kriyananda, Norman Paulsen, Roy Eugene Davis and other diciples of Yogananda complements the books published by SRF. Yogananda never intended SRF to be an exclusive sect and Kriyananda(who is a very sincere disiple) has taken the teachings of Yogananda to a deeper level.
This book is highly recommended to those who are interested in living a more spiritual life and are not recommended to people who are filled with hatred over the author. SRF students who are open-minded, would find this book useful for their own spiritual development.
A First Rate Personal Investment w/ Big Dividends!.......2004-03-20
This is a very helpful, and enlightening manual on the art of yoga - more specifically, "Raja Yoga" which is a balanced and comprehensive approach to yoga practice. Knowing very little about yoga, but wanting to blend meditation with physical exercise on my own at home, I found an old record called "Yoga for Self Awareness" by Sri Kriyananda. It's a four sided set that includes a full hour and a half of yoga postures, meditation, and chants. It was pretty easy to follow along at first, but I realized that I desired to learn more and wanted to be sure I was doing the postures correctly. I was pleasantly surprised to find "Raja Yoga" by Kriyananda (aka Donald Walters) on Amazon, and ordered it right away.
The manual is divided into 14 chapters, each chapter into 7 subsets: Philosophy, Postures, Breathing, Routine, Healing, Diet, and Meditation - all treated with equal gravity, although meditation does figure prominantly throughout Raja Yoga. Yoga is rooted in religion, and so if meditation and religious sentiment don't appeal to you, you might just want to go find a local "hatha" yoga class at the YMCA, or gym. However, I will say that if you open yourself up to the basic philosophy presented here, and surrender skepticism towards Kriyananda's medical advice (which seems rather incredulous at times) you'll find yourself believing instead of doubting. The world is full of mystery (travel and see for yourself!), and to perpetually wrap oneself up in self-protective doubt is unproductive, and ultimately, harmful to spiritual (and physical) growth. Skepticism, okay; but yoga teaches one to trust, and open oneself up to incredible possibilities, and I think this lesson in itself makes Raja Yoga invaluable. I too didn't think I'd be able to do half of these postures when I first listened to the record (the cd that comes with the book is its one mediocre flaw, as it only contains an abbreviated version of the Yoga Postures record I found, along with a lecture by Kriyananda that you may or may not find inspiring. You don't need an audio supplement to do yoga, but it really helps to hear Kriyananda's magnetic voice. I suggest contacting the "student support" e-mail address provided in the introduction for records and cds).
Once you begin reading and practicing you'll quickly became impressed with just how comprehensive and easy to use "The Art & Science of Raja Yoga" is. I was able to jump right in and start making yoga a part of my daily routine. Ever since doing so, I've been amazed how my health and overall mind-set has strengthened to the point that I feel more balanced, positive, and in tune with nature. You will be too - enjoy!
Best Yoga Book I've Ever Read...........2003-02-14
....and I've read alot of them.
Art and Science of Raja Yoga has everything from easy beginner routines, to more advanced postures. And this book doesn't make you feel like some couch potato just because you can't do advanced pretzel poses.
I also enjoyed the pranayama breathing exercises and meditation practices. I had never 'got' meditation until I began practicing some of the simple meditation techniques in this book.
You can also contact the publishers of the book for followup support with your practices- everything from retreats, to other books, and more. I've never, ever heard of anything like this. Check it out!
Book Description
Dancing the Body of Light is the title of the book that Dona has brought out with her student and fellow yoga teacher, Orit Sen-Gupta. Together they have explored the past and present stages of yoga and offer in this ambitious manuscript a way that the art of yoga can continue to develop in the future. Perfect pose, empty mind, and wide heart are at the basis of this development, in which all the aspects of the human being are brought together into one organic whole. This was undoubtedly the aim of the ancient yogi's, but as happens to all traditions, at a certain moment in history the descriptions take the place of reality, the vehicle to arrive at life becomes more important than life itself. The book "Dancing the Body of Light: the Future of Yoga", aims at refreshing old concepts and giving them a new, modern look. Using modern terminology and modern sciences, the old yogic concepts of the annamaya kosha (the physical body) and the pranamaya kosha (the energy body) are rediscovered as the twin vehicle in which the human being travels through life. The application of NOT-DOING or WU-WEI to the physical body brings again the pranamaya kosha or energy body into focus. At the same time the application of NOT-DOING to the mind and heart bring back that peacefulness and innocence that can reflect without distortion the here and now. It is out of that reflection that we can act with clarity and efficiency. The book is brought out in a beautiful hard back cover, and a deluxe paperback which contain, apart from the philosophical part, a large section with a detailed description of all the asanas, bandhas, pranayama techniques and savasana techniques. With more than three hundred photographs it gives, in addition to the description, a visual idea of the ease and fluidity with which the postures can be performed if they are done from the point of view of the energy body through the application of WU-WEI or NOT-DOING. This book is a must for all serious yoga practitioners and teachers.

Best book on performing the asanas correctly.......2006-03-17
This is my favorite yoga book with respect to detailed descriptions of how to perform the asanas correctly. For some people, there may be even too much detail. However, where there is a possiblity of injury or not getting the full benefit from a posture, I would hope most people would prefer to err in the direction of too much information rather than not enough. In other words, this book does not have superficial descriptions. In my opinion, this makes it a must own for every yoga practitioner particularly beginners who may be more prone to injury and overdoing things.
This book also contains information on yoga philosophy, the bandhas and kriyas as well as a chapter on pranayama. These chapters are short, provide useful context and good reference material. However, it would be best to study some of these other areas along with a teacher and additional reference material.
Another good introductory yoga book is Judith Lasater's 30 Essential Yoga Poses. This is written more simply, holds the number of poses to 30 and provides a number of useful practice sequences. I don't find it describes the correct way to perform the asanas as well as this book, but it's well done and also includes good notes on fine points for yoga teachers.
If you are serious about your yoga practice, then I don't know of a better book that describes how to perform the asanas correctly. If you are easily overwhelmed by detail, then I would probably try Judith Lasater's book above and get this one when you are more advanced.
Back Care Basics is also a nice introduction to yoga written by a physician for people with back problems. While this is the target audience, it also a good general introduction to Iyengar yoga.
Beautiful yoga, insightful commentary on asanas.......2003-07-11
Ms.Holleman has written a wonderful, comprehensive book for yoga practitioners everywhere. She goes into great detail. The words she uses are inspired, and derive from her deep and long practice. She also demonstrates beautiful postures which illustrate what advanced practitioners do.
Very inspiring.......2001-03-06
Dancing the Body of Light has been an inspiration for my personal yoga practice in the last two years. The photos of the asanas are beautiful and the instructions are very clear. Dona Holleman is able to convey how we can go beyond our physical body and find the light and joy which comes from tapping into the energy body. This book is an inspiration for all practitioners of yoga.

Dancing the Body of Light.......2000-10-11
Dancing the Body of Light was the number one best seller at the fifth annual Yoga Journal Convention held at Estes Park, Colorado October 2000. This book is being received as a thorough, in depth yet easy to read manual on Yoga. Dona Holleman being present at this meeting is considered the teacher of many of the teachers who taught at the Convention. In her 40 years of Yoga experience she developed her own very unique way of practicing/ teaching Yoga. She is a master in her field. Dancing the Body of Light contains her wonderful insights and experience. As one of her students being present at the Convention I would say 'buy this unique book'and be inspired by it like myself and dance the Dance of the Body of Light in YOUR practice!
Customer Reviews:
this Ashtanga Yoga is in fact Raja Yoga.......2006-09-01
This book describes the eight limbs of the Ashtanga Yoga system, also known as Raja Yoga. For the people who look for an Ashtanga Vinyasa book, as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, I would recommend Swenson's Practice Manual or John Scott's Ashtanga Yoga. As an Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga teacher, especially if you are new to yoga, I would also recommend great caution when doing some asanas as taught in this book. The body alignment is scary. My final word: practice yoga with a qualified yoga teacher first.
Concise and Precise Guide to Kundalini Yoga.......2002-01-23
This book could well be titled "Chakras, Kundalini and How to Awaken It" as that is the information it contains. A concise guide to the systematic stages of this "open secret." I highly recommend this deceptively simple book to the seeker of spiritual yoga.
I noted one reviewer here was disappointed because this book didn't fit their idea of "power yoga." This struck me as odd since kundalini yoga is very, very powerful. I think perhaps they, like many people, have confused power with perspiration. If you just want to be physically strong, yoga can do that for you. Perhaps one day though you will discover that yoga goes far beyond that. Perhaps then you may find this book helpful in your search for true spritual union.

Ashtanga Yoga Primer.......2001-10-17
The Yoga Primer has served as an inspiration and light to my yoga practice for the past 20 years. It is a rare and precious offering from a true yoga master that goes to the pure heart of the essence of the 8 limbed path. As a shining example of karma yoga, all proceeds from the sale of this book (and all books by Baba Hari Dass) go to support an orphanage in India. This gem of a book offers teachings on many aspects of yoga practice. It has great photos and some of the best descriptions of asana benefits that I have read anywhere. It further teaches extensive practices that support asana practice such as shat karmas (internal cleansing) and mudras (exercises to raise the kundalini energy). The section on chakras clearly defines the path kundalini takes as it rises. One section is devoted to pranayamas which not only help with the ultimate aim of quieting the mind so it can rest in it's true nature of peace, but also reduce negative emotions and increase the prana (subltle air) which uplifts the mind and enrgizes the body. For the devotional types, there is a lovely description of arati and graceful hand mudras to enhance the worship aspect of your practice. All in all, a joy to have, a guide and companion on the path, and a great gift. My family and friends have enjoyed receiving it for a few generations now. Blessings on your way!om shanti om,Urmila
A wonderful book I have used in my yoga teaching for 14 year.......1999-03-22
Baba Hari Dass is a silent yogi who communicates via a chalk board. He is very straight forward and to the point and does not waste words. The book opens up flat so you can look at the wonderful pictures of the poses. It has a great introduction that includes all the limbs of Ashtanga (8 limbed) yoga. If it has a fault it is that Baba Hari Dass would hav you doing 2 to 3 hours of yoga practices a day if you followed his regimen, not very realistic for Americans.
this is not "power yoga".......1997-11-16
If you are planning to purchase this book thinking that it somehow relates to a power yoga regime (as I did) you would be mistaken. Although the book shows some very therapeutic poses, it also shows how to "purify " your nose by using dental floss and how to purge your stomach - not the book I thought it would be. For those fellow fans of power yoga I suggest Birch's Power Yoga - an excellent book.

The spiritual power of yogafrom the ten million-copy bestselling author of The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success
In recent years, yoga has exploded in popularity. Yet for most North Americans, yoga remains just another exercise routinea good option if you want to increase flexibility or relieve stress. According to Deepak Chopra and David Simon, however, this simplistic view ignores the spiritual side of yogaits profound power to unite body, mind, and spirit and bring about enlightenment. Now, in this new book, they show how everyone can explore yoga's spiritual dimensionand integrate all the layers of their lives.
Yoga means "union" in Sanskrit, and the authors begin by exploring the eight traditional yoga branchesthe entry points to this union. The branches address such things as behavior, attention, awareness, the senses, and energy, and only one of them, asana, corresponds to the "positions" or poses people typically associate with yoga. Chopra and Simon then show people how to understand the seven spiritual laws that govern naturePure Potentiality, Giving, Karma, Least Effort, Intention and Desire, Detachment, and Dharmaand how to integrate these laws into their daily lives using meditation, breathing, asana, and other yoga practices. Complete with more than 50 photographs illustrating yoga poses, this new Chopra blockbuster is essential for anyone who wants to embrace yoga's spiritual potentialand lead a happier, more abundant, more harmonious life.
Deepak Chopra, MD (San Diego, CA), is one of the bestselling authors of the last 15 years. Chopra simplifies yoga.......2007-04-12
As with each of Chopra's books that I have read, his thoughts are extremely helpful at taking things and making them seem reasonable and simple. If you are already practicing yoga or thinking of starting, you need this book. Another book he wrote-"The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" is probably the best book you could ever put to use. I'm not a "new age" or "self-help" kind of guy but this dude is cool!
A Book of Many Insights.......2007-01-20
I chose this book because I was looking for help in returning to my practice of yoga. Deepak Chopra books always provided words of guidance. He did not fail in this attempt. He begins the book with insightful questions to help you find the real "you" and then progresses to explain the different types of yoga practices. But the real value in the book is the section discussing the Seven Spirtual Laws. For me, that alone was worth buying the book.
After many years of practicing yoga I now understand the importance of not forcing the body to obey moves but it is in allowing the inner Self to assist in all of the movements. There is a wonderful section on yoga positions with excellent photos and descriptions of how to attain the pose. Chopra also discusses meditation, how to practice it and methods for success.
This is a book I keep in my workout area and read each day before I begin my sessions. It is not only physically helpful, it is a spiritual inspiration.
Change of Life Book.......2006-11-06
Dr. Chopra's book is a very uplifting yet calming way to study the spirituality side of yoga. While the poses are not difficult, the incorporation of the 7 laws gives a whole new meaning to the asanas.
This book has taught me the importance of meditation in my yoga practice.
I think it's a great book for newcomers as well as experienced yogis.
Namaste!
Great Book.......2006-09-09
This book is a indispensible daily guide that helps readers implement the spiritual benefits of yoga--both on and off the mat. Chopra and Simon's simple yet descriptive language allows for complete comprehension of the philosophy, meditation, bandhas and practices of yoga. I especially like the Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga (which fall under Philosophy) and refer to and implement them on a daily basis. As a new student of yoga, this book has greatly helped my approach to and understanding of my daily practices.
wonderful!.......2004-06-26
If you love yoga then you'll love this book! There's so much more to yoga than the physical postures that we have come to know. Yoga is a beautiful study, one that can really help deepen any spiritual practice. This book explains so much. I really enjoyed it, and will read it over and over again!
Book Description
Indian sage Patanjali wrote his famous Yoga Sutras sometime around 250 B.C. and they are still widely regarded as the ultimate text on yoga practice. However, many modern practitioners find his aphorisms too inaccessible, and analysis has tended to obscure rather than reveal their meaning. Vimala Thakar cuts through the mystique by returning to the root meaning of the Sutras' Sanskrit words and reveals, at last, their basic concepts. Glimpses of Raja Yoga provides an in-depth look into the ancient Indian culture that gave rise to the Upanishads and the Yoga Sutras, the dimension of Silence that lies beyond meditation, the yamas (restraints) and niyamas (observances) that form the basis of ethics in yoga, and much more. By demonstrating the direct relevance of the Sutras to modern yoga practice, Glimpses of Raja Yoga opens the spiritual horizons of yoga practitioners everywhere.

simply mind expanding.......2005-08-29
Rebeccasreads highly recommends GLIMPSES OF RAJA YOGA as a delightful & brief seminar into the origins of Veda, Sanskrit, the Rishis, Krsi, as well as what Sutras are, & how to think within their wisdom.
Quite simply, reading GLIMPSES OF RAJA YOGA is as if you are sitting at this wise teacher's knees, listening to her idiosyncratic take on the yogic wisdom of the ages. Just glimpses, mind you, each provocative, delectable, succinct &, dare I say it, occasionally hilarious.
A treasure for expanding your ideas about the Cosmos, & for the practice of your mind.

Raja-Yoga

Book Description
This book interpretation of Raja Yoga,a part of Patanjali's Yoga sutras,is by Swami Sivananda.
Raja Yoga is the King of all Yogas. It concerns directly with the mind. In this Yoga there is no struggling with Prana or physical body. There are no Hatha Yogic Kriyas. The Yogi sits at ease, watches his mind and silnces the bubbling thoughts. He stills the mind and restrains the thought waves, enters into the thoughtless state of Asamprajnata Samadhi. Hence the name Raja Yoga. Though Raja Yoga is a dualisitic philosophy and treats of Prakriti and Purusha,it helps the student in Advaitic realisation of openness eventually. Though there is the mention of Purusha, ultimately the Purusha becomes identical with the highest Self or Brahman of the Upabnishads. Raja Yoga pushes the student to the highest ring of the spiritualm ladder,Advaitic realisation of brahman.
Like many other books of the author this book also has run into many editions since it's first publication in the year 1937.

A Most Useful Book of Lessons!.......2007-09-20
briefly, the teachings found in this book are intended to assist you in taking back the power over your own mind. most of us are controlled by the various factors of our minds (our fears, passions, affinities, etc.) and have forgotten who is REALLY driving this vehicle that we identify as "Me." these teachings are like road signs on the road back home.
this book, Raja Yoga, is rich with value. like all things, the teachings found in this book cannot be objectively valued; the Candidate (one who would seek teachings such as these) must find the value for him/herself. for me, these teachings cannot be compared to anything else that i've been taught. i'm getting to know myself on a much larger level. i am sooo thankful for these teachings. the value is in the fruits of doing the work.
i highly recommend this book for anyone who feels drawn to read it. follow your instinct...your first inclination is often the most sincere one. also, take your time with it...Rome wasn't built in one day.
Masterful!.......2005-09-26
Well defined lessons on separating self from ego and opening up to higher levels of spiritual consciousness. Excellent!
Great tools for the development of mind.......2001-05-11
I found this book years ago by an accident, in an antiquity store in Zagreb. More than just worthy of the five stars- I found the lessons extremely useful. However, I would advise any beginner to be careful with the "trap door" and similar techniques, since they can easily lead one to putting too many things into the subconscious realm, instead of the opposite. Things like noticing the details on things, instead of the whole - for instance, counting each scale on a fish - are extremely precious and can help you build concentration and focus. Even the apparently simple things, like focusing your eyes and mind on a dot on the wall, or visualizing your pen, or matching footsteps with imagined music, will strengthen the mind enormously, even with very little practice. Seeing it as a manual for strengthening the mind, it is an excellent book and I recommend it to everybody. However, I would advise a beginner to start with something more general, such as Yogananda's 'Autobiography' or my 'Approach' - even if it means advertising myself :), before getting into specific exercises, because it's important to have a wide spiritual perspective before starting to bother with details.
