Book Description

The most comprehensive sourcebook of Shakespeare's monologues ever available in one volume.

A detailed guide to approaching Shakespearean text, Speak the Speech! contains everything an actor needs to select and prepare a Shakespeare monologue for classwork, auditions, or performance.

Included herein are over 150 monologues. Each one is placed in context with a brief introduction, is carefully punctuated in the manner that best illustrates its meaning, and is painstakingly and thoroughly annotated. Each is also accompanied by commentary that will spark the actor's imagination by exploring how the interrelationship of meter and the choice of words and sounds yields clues to character and performance. And throughout the book sidebars relate historical, topical, technical, and other useful and entertaining information relevant to the text. In addition, the authors include an overview of poetic and rhetorical elements, brief synopses of all the plays, and a comprehensive index along with other guidelines that will help readers locate the perfect monologue for their needs.

More than just an actor's toolkit, Speak the Speech! is also an entertaining resource that will help demystify Shakespeare's language for the student and theater lover alike.

4 out of 5 stars So much help..........2007-02-13

This book has been so helpful in my auditioning process. THANK YOU FOR PUBLISHING THIS!!

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievably useful and clear........2007-01-21

As a young actor currently studying Shakespeare in an acting conservatory, this book perfectly compliments the tools I am being taught.

It is full of information written in a clear, efficient manner and is never patronizing to the reader. The tone has a lighteness and joy that invites the actor into the world of classical text and removes any stodgy stereotypes that may surround the poet's work.

I recommend this book to any actor who is looking for some less performed Shakespeare monologues and comes equipped with an incredibley useful guide to understanding the plays themselves, as well as what is going on specifically with each monologue.

I would buy it as a gift for all of my acting friends.

Bravo to the authors.

5 out of 5 stars simply the best.......2006-07-02

Simply the best book ever to analyze Shakespeare's monologues: incisive, illuminating, deeply intelligent, always entertaining and sometimes brilliant. Experienced actors as well as those new to the craft will find this immeasurably helpful, and they will have plenty of company. Anyone who appreciates Shakespeare's words and work will find this wonderful book an oasis in a literary desert too often filled with mirages.

5 out of 5 stars Great help for even a layman to understand Shakespeare.......2003-05-11

As a nonactor I'm in the midst of reading this book. Now for the first time I'm completely grasping the prose and verse. In the past I've tried to read Shakespeare cold, with no help, and as a modern English speaker you can pick up some things yes, but this book makes it all, and I mean all clear. We get well over 100 of his greatest monologues, and every unfamiliar word is fully explained, as well as multiple interpretations of the lines.

I recommend this book to students, actors, writers, and layman for it will unleash the magic of the verse. And when it does you can read or see a performance and grasp it all...and there is so much to grasp, and a good play requires a good reader, a good performance, a good audience, and this book will make you one.

5 out of 5 stars How An Actor Prepares.......2002-11-14

Learn the Speech! Actors need tools for their acting toolkit and not a day goes by here at my Writers & Performers Garage in Los Angeles that I don't mention this great new tool. With over 150 monologues, it's an essential for actor preparation. I can't think of any recent book I've read that is more useful for actors working seriously at their craft.

4 out of 5 stars DOWN RIGHT MEAN AND NASTY QUOTES FROM THE SHADOWY SIDE OF LIFE.......2007-03-25

What a fun little read, chockablock full of delectable saturnine, sardonic and downright surly one-liners that spew from the smirks and smiles of our favorite dicks, dames and dolls. "My first wife was a second cook at a third rate joint on 4th St." -The Glass Key, is particular favorite of mine...But there are so many more to chew on...like so many mordant morsels. Some are complimentary,e.g. "You'd look good in a shower curtain" -Cody Jarrett -"White Heat" but most bite to the bone. "You've gotta study to get that stupid" -Radak "Desperate" This tiny compendium of sarcasm is complimented with an arrestingly appropriate graphic style that is both simple and effective. Have this by the bedstand and the next time your wife or hubby gives you some grief...turn to page...30 "I'll never think of our moments together without nausea". Now what can you say to that? -NDW

This book is endlessly entertaining. I've read it several times already and plan to read it several times more. It doesn't get better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing beats dark and mysterious film and pulp noir!!!.......2006-07-13

I must admit I fell in love with "It's a Bitter Little World", it's a good little reference book for some of the best late forties and fifties noir movie punch lines. Last Saturday afternoon I saw "Kiss Me Deadly" on TCM for the first time but I'm going to make it a point to see all my old favorites like "Somewhere in the Night" though not mentioned by Mr. Pappas, and "Nocturne", "High Sierra" and other Bogey noir favorites, also "Chinatown", "Farewell My Lovely" "Blade Runner" as well as some I haven't yet seen. Long live noir!

5 out of 5 stars A Piece of History.......2006-03-15

Every once in a while, and it's not often, you run across a book whose contents seem ready to bust its covers. ITS A BITTER LITTLE WORLD is one of those beauties. Charles Pappas has created a multi-media experience in book form. Not only do you get the best film-noir quotations ever uttered by the most desperate guys and dolls, but you get them surrounded by graphics and design that pull you right into the shadows. Visually, it's a striking book. And, as if that wasn't enough, you get a healthy dose of Mr. Pappas' own observations, written in a style that has all the bite and brains of the genre he obviously loves so well. ITS A BITTER LITTLE WORLD is a labor of love, and it pulls no punches. I can't imagine a worthier tribute to the film-noir genre, and I can't imagine anyone pulling it off half as well as Mr. Pappas. Film-noir has given us the greatest dialogue in the history of cinema, and ITS A BITTER LITTLE WORLD is a feast of imagery and phrases whose like we won't see again. This is a book for every library.

5 out of 5 stars A fun, revealing compilation lending to leisure browsing by any who love film noir and literature.......2006-02-09

Charles Pappas' It's A Bitter Little World: The Smartest Toughest Nastiest Quotes From Film Noir represents the author's sixty years of film noir surveys to locate quotes and dialogue which pertain to life's challenges and answers. Arranged by decade, these are scalding quotes and even fun, memorable lines and dialogue bits which reflect a love of language and an eye to fun. It's A Bitter Little World is a fun, revealing compilation lending to leisure browsing by any who love film noir and literature.

Book Description

In this thoroughly entertaining collection of acerbic put-downs, witty one-liners, blatantly honest appraisals of terrified contestants and even catty comments on his fellow judges, American Idol's controversial big mouth speaks on subjects as diverse as music, dance, show business, political correctness, romance, fashion, himself and his trousers. Whether he's telling a naïve hopeful that they sound like a kitten mewing, they look as if they've been dragged through a bush or are merely pleasant, safe and a little insipid, Cowell's trademark comebacks are collected here for the first time. Covering the early years with insults to his family and schoolteachers, the jibes to first bosses at work, then the sharp retorts to aspiring stars on television and his critiques of the rich and famous, this book gathers his most well-known lines—and plenty of long-forgotten ones, too! With quotes from his admirers and enemies, and a section on how to speak fluent vitriol like the master, this is the ultimate handbook for getting ahead.

As Simon's older brother, author and journalist Tony Cowell has had first-hand experience of Simon's cheek, sarcasm and forked tongue. Tony worked with Simon on the biography I Don't Mean to be Rude…

Book Description

Images of hearts and lovers figure prominently in his artistic vocabulary. Love collects forty of his most lovely images and combines them with You!, a love poem written by Haring as a teenager. For lovers of any age, Love expresses in pictures what cannot be said in words. Dance was a major influence on Haring, and collected here are forty of his most compelling images of dance in all its various expressions. With a simple, fluid line, Haring created energetic dancing characters ranging from hip-hopping chickens to a ballerina in full arabesque. These joyful drawings are matched with insightful entries from his journals, which reveal his thoughts on life, dance, and art.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Keith Haring's joyful dance of life.......2001-04-12

"Dance," by Keith Haring, brings together a number of illustrations by the artist (who died from AIDS-related complications in 1990), together with quotes from his own journals about dance and other arts. This is a beautiful book, full of energy and joy. Haring's images have a uniquely funky poetry to them. Whether he's creating a robot DJ, whimsical animals, or tribal/iconic looking humanoid figures, Haring imprints his distinctive style upon all.

My only problem with the book involves the following editorial note on the publication data page: "The Keith Haring artwork in this book has been reproduced faithfully; however, the colors of some works have been altered." So. . . which colors have been altered, and why? I'm of the opinion that you don't mess with the work of a master artist unless you have a very good reason, and the editors of this book fail to fully explain this matter of alteration.

But despite this matter, Haring's vision shines through. He wrote, "The freedom of the artist is symbolic of the human spirit in all mankind." Haring's appeal transcends all barriers of difference, and "Dance" truly speaks to that universal human spirit.

5 out of 5 stars You'll be dancing for joy with these cheery pictures!.......2000-04-30

"Dance" is a happy little collection ofpostcard-sized pictures. The images are arranged on pages opposite tosmall related quotations lifted from Keith Haring's journal (alsoavailable ...). The pictures are mainly contain a single-figure in 2 or 3 colours, perfect for the size of paper available and it works very well within the layout of the book. From decks to breakdancers to ballerinas - the images are as enduring as they are lurid in their fluorescent colours! It is a handsome book (in hardback with smart dust jacket) and would make a brilliant gift for a Haring fan, especially if they were into a form of dance too. We bought it for a DJ friend of ours but everyone who read it found it impossible not to find at least one favourite picture amongst them all which deserved more coverage!

5 out of 5 stars Some of the greatest actors speak out.......2007-03-23

Reviewed by William E. Cooper for Reader Views (2/07)

Do you often reflect about some the greatest actors of theatre and film, and what they brought in terms of real entertainment? Do you remember the pride they took in their work, and that you could easily watch and listen to them, and have the family do the same? Were you part of an audience, someone who wished he or she could remember some of those really good lines or quotes? Well, now you have a source for them. Now you have a book that brings these wonderful actors into your home, business, or library.

This is a book designed to read straight through, or in any part any time. The book content is arranged alphabetically and provides literally hundreds of great quotes from a myriad of actors, both current and historic. I found myself reading the book through, almost without stopping. There are so many great quotes, it is a fascinating read. The content has obviously been thoroughly researched, and considerable thought given to what should or should not go in to the book. What is there is a compilation of quotes about the business and people involved with it. The reader can not only enjoy the book for what it is, but can take so many of the statements and translate them into everyday life.

As the author of the book "Leading Beyond Tradition," I know what it takes to prepare and develop a book. The work involved is significant, but the outcomes are normally well worth the effort. This book was worth it. I am completing a book on some of the greatest leadership quotations of all time, so have a good appreciation for such works. Mr. Phillips intended to deliver a good book, and clearly has done so. "The Audience Book of Theatre Quotations" is well worth your time and resources and should be part of your library. I need to offer a sincere well done to Mr. Phillips.

Book Description

Like the companion volume for men, Alternative Shakespeare Auditions for Women brings together fifty speeches from plays frequently ignored such as Coriolanus, Pericles, and Love's Labours Lost. It also features good, but over-looked speeches from more popular plays such as Diana from All's Well That Ends Well, Perdita from The Winter's Tale and Hero from Much Ado About Nothing.

Each speech is accompanied by a character description, brief explanation of the context, and notes on obscure words, phrases and references--all written from the viewpoint of the auditioning actor. It is the perfect resource for your best audition ever.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great guide to offbeat Shakespeare--- NO BALCONY SCENES!.......2001-04-16

This book is attractive, sturdy and is formatted well. That being said, the content is equally stellar. The author knows a lot about each piece, and provides the background you need to make the character come alive at an audition, or just in your mind for reading. There are footnotes to the language that are useful, and the speeches themselves are constructed nicely and are good choices for any level of Shakespeare performer. MY only complaint, which isn't that important, is that the characters are not studied with as much depth as you would like if you were reading this book for literary pleasure. But it does give this book as an actors guide a sense of poetic freedom and freedom of creativity. Also good is the next volume "MORE Alternative Shakespeare Auditions for Women." Don't expect Juliet scenes or Beatrice monologues--- the "alternative" characters and speeches of Shakespeare get their 15 minutes! Recommended for anyone who has every wanted to be a Shakespeare "snob" at auditions and freshen up your Bard inventory. :O)

5 out of 5 stars Very usefull!.......2000-06-29

I found this book indispencable as an actress. Many auditions call for alternative shakespearian monologues and this book has many good monologues combined with essential study notes.

    Book Description

Auditioners often complain of seeing the same speeches over and over again. In Alternative Shakespeare Auditions for Men, Simon Dunmore has drawn on his experience as a director to select and edit a collection of fascinating, fresh, and unusual speeches from Shakespeare's plays.

Dunmore brings together fifty speeches for men from plays frequently ignored such as Titus Andronicus, Pericles, and Love's Labours Lost. It also includes good, but over-looked speeches from the more popular plays such as Octavius Caesar from Antony and Cleopatra, Leontes from The Winter's Tale and Buckingham from Richard III. With character descriptions, brief explanations of the context, and notes on obscure words, phrases and references, it is the perfect source for a unique audition.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for any aspiring classical actor.......1998-05-23

I thought that this book was excellent resource for a number of different reasons. First, Mr. Dunmore, a director himself, provides a list of monologues which are far too frequently used (I found this list invaluable). It not only has some of the monologues you would expect to see on a list of this type (Hamlet, Hal/Henry V, Iago etc.), but also some other characters you wouldn't think would be used that frequently: Clarence, Aaron, Launcelot Gobbo and others. Also, I think that Dunmore provides a nice introduction for actors who are new to Shakespeare with a resource guide in the beginning of the book discussing some of the inricacies of speaking Shakespeare. Lastly, I thought all of the monologues (which I thought might have been edited a little more precisely; I didn't like some of the punctuation) were well laid out and gave a nice (but brief) insight into the characters and some of them give suggested age ranges (though I would have loved to have seen this throughout the book). A terrific resource, nonetheless, for any aspiring classical actor who doesn't want to be the hundredth actor to do Puck at an audition.
