Choose Your Own Adventure.......2007-09-10
These books are fantastic - I have fond memories of them from my childhood. As a school teacher, they are a wonderful read aloud. I let the children vote everytime there is a choice. They think they're great!
Great reading for people of all ages.......2007-09-03
We have read Choose Your Own Adventure 1-6, and our 7 year old son, my husband & I were glued to every book. The books are well written, interesting & intriguing. Not too scary but gripping. We highly reccomend these books to everyone. They can be read & reread, a real plus.
NOT the original books.......2007-04-20
My children have been enjoying some of my old Choose Your Own Adventure books from the 80's, so when I saw this rerelease of several classic books for such a reasonable price, I bought it for them. Well, apparently R.A. Montgomery wasn't able to get the rights on the original illustrations, so he had a bunch of freelance designers from Thailand draw replacement pictures for each of them, and they are AWFUL. Not just 'different,' but shockingly, unignorably BAD -- they look like cartoons drawn carelessly by teenagers, with no sense of proportion, anatomy, lighting, or anything else. The drawings in "Mystery of the Maya" are not bad but most of the others are so terrible they render the books unreadable. Leaving them unillustrated would have been better than this. Find used copies of the originals (most of which are for sale cheap on Amazon) or just pick something else to read.
Paths Too Short.......2007-03-30
You make one or two choices and the book is over. They should only have a few endings and make each path longer.
My 9-year-old LOVES these.......2007-01-10
We bought these books for our son because we remembered how much we loved them at his age. They are much quicker reads than I remember, but he loves them, so they get 5 stars. One book takes him less than 45 minutes to get through. He hasn't gotten to the stage where he goes back and makes different choices yet, but I'm sure he'll become even more fond of them then.

No melting allowed! Jaclyn used to live with her aunt Greta in Chicago. But not anymore. They've moved to a place called Sherpia. It's a tiny village on the edge of the Arctic Circle. Jaclyn can't believe she's stuck out in Nowheresville. No movie theaters. No malls. No nothing. Plus, there's something really odd about the village. At night there are strange howling noises. And in front of every house there's a snowman. A creepy snowman with a red scarf. A deep scar on his face. And a really evil smile. . . .

Jaclyn used to live in chigo with her aunt Greeta (her mother died and her father disappeared when she was two.) Not any more! Now she lives in a wierd mountain village called Sherpia. In Sherpia Jaclyn met two friends Rolonda and Eli. They belive in this wierd story. Two sorceerers used magic to bring it to life. But they lost control of it.The sorceerers tried to put speels on it to put it back to sleep. their magic wasn't powerful enough. Somehow they forced the snowman into an ice ave at the top of the mountain. And he;s still there today.
It sounds good but it's really boring! DO NOT READ!!!!

Tim's review.......2005-09-14
I really liked the book Beware the Snowman. I like fictional books and it had a happy ending. I have read a lot of other Goosebumps books but they were better than this one. This one was not as scary.
The book was about Jaclyn. She moved from Chicago to Sherpia, a town that has a strange history about an evil snowman. Jaclyn wanted to disprove the story of the snowman. Jaclyn climbed to the place the snowman lives, it turns out the snowman is real.
I think someone who likes fake stories would like this book because none of this stuff could ever happen.
Beware!.......2005-04-23
Jacklyn used to live with her Aunt Greta in Chicago. But not anymore. Because they are going to move to a scary town with a big, mean alive snowman!
An interesting book.......2005-01-05
A interesting story about a girl who moves to a town next to the artic circle. Every house in town has a snowman with a scar. The girl goes on the most exciting adventure of the girl's life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Snow Day Afternoon.......2002-01-24
This book features kid-friendly (bright and not too cluttered) illustrations and softly humorous text. Each of the 40 pages (divided into three short chapters) has pictures and just a few sentences, making this a great beginning reader's book or a fun story for adults to read out loud.
There is a nice message about variety: Mudge meets and enjoys other dogs; the snowman contest features many different snowman ideas and decorations... Light and simple, but done very well.

Along with Mickey Mouse and Asterix, Tintin is one of the world's most recognizable cartoon characters. If you haven't read any of his adventures, you are missing a real pleasure. The clean, crisp art style that defines modern European comics is almost entirely the influence of Hergé. Considered to be one of Hergé's masterworks, Tintin in Tibet is a great book for both old and new fans of Tintin. It is compelling, exciting, and spiritually rewarding in the way that the best comics stories can be.
Customer Reviews:
Ahead of its time.......2007-05-16
This is essentially Herge's spiritual soul searching 'hippie' book. If it had been done in the late 60s it would probably have been seen as being quite in tune with the popular culture of its time. Yet this was actually done ten years earlier in 1958, which makes it an almost visionary work. It was even orignally supposed to have had an all white cover, much like the beatles white album. All in all, one of the most enjoyable Tintin books, and also a timeless classic of 20th century popular culture.
Possibly the best of the Tintin adventures........2007-04-13
Herge, Tintin in Tibet (Methuen, 1960)
Tintin in Tibet is a complete anomaly in the Tintin series, a diversion from Tintin's usual world of intrigue to follow a dream. Tintin finds out his old friend Chang (from The Blue Lotus) has been involved in a plane crash in Tibet, he and Haddock rush off to the crash site. Tintin is convinced Chang is still alive; everyone around him, including Haddock, tell him it's not possible. Tintin's quest to find out the truth of Chang's fate leads him into a monastery full of mystics and, ultimately, a search for the legendary yeti.
This is an amazing piece of work. It is, perhaps, the most universally lauded Tintin comic (Lofficier, in The Pocket Essential Tintin, says it's been voted the greatest French-language graphic novel of all time), and it is without doubt one of the best. ****
Great Tintin book.......2007-02-02
This was reportedly author Herge's own favorite book in the Tintin series. It's slower, less oriented toward children, and fascinated (to the point of naivete, perhaps) with Eastern mysticism. The plot: Tintin, vacationing in the Alps with Haddock and Calculus, suddenly has a dream in which his friend Tchang (from The Blue Lotus, an early Tintin album) is in serious danger. As they soon learn, Tchang was on a plane that crashed on the Himalayas, apparently without survivors. But Tintin is convinced Tchang is alive, so there they go to try to rescue him. In Tibet they met a number of people, including none other than the Yeti (who is a central character in the book) and flying lamas(!). A very good album, though I wouldn't rate it among the very best. Also of interest is that it shows an independent Tibet, the book being written just before China's invasion of that land.
Tintin in Tibet.......2006-12-25
Tintin has a dream of his Chinese friend Chang (from "The Blue Lotus") after hiking on a mountain holiday, and wakes to find that a plane Chang was on has crashed in the Himalayas. There were no survivors reported, but Tintin is convinced that Chang is still alive up there, so off he goes to the Nepalese/Tibetan border, along with Captain Haddock and some shirpas, looking for clues. There's a few surprises to be found up there, and Tintin hopes with all his heart that a healthy, happy Chang is one of them.
It's the last Tintin adventure, I reckon, that has Tintin as the main character. The last three completed ones ("The Castafiore Emerald", "Flight 714" and "Tintin and the Picaros") focus more on Captain Haddock. It's also probably the most emotional Tintin's character gets as well. The mountain scenery and Nepalese towns are drawn really nicely, and the adventure is simple and enjoyable. Worth a look for fans of Tintin.
A very personal story.......2005-09-27
This adventure of the beloved reporter Tintin and his dog Snowy is one of the most personal story that creator Hergé has ever told.
Tintin dreams of his friend Tchang -- only to learn that his dream has become reality: his friend is supposed to have died in a plane crash in Tibet. He leaves immediatly to start a search...
When Hergé started to work on this adventure, he found himself in a personal crisis. A psychiatrist even recommended him to stop working on "Les aventures de Tintin"...
With "Tintin in Tibet", he broke free from his established way of drawing. As the story evolves, we often see snow covered flats or snow storms with little detail -- in contrast to what Hergés style is usually composed of. The cast is also greatly reduced in number. Only a few of the established characters take center stage and not too many new ones are intoduced.
This is an excellent comic book -- maybe one of the greatest ever created. It is fun to read and the drawings are just gorgeous.

My Husband Bob.......2007-01-02
My 46 year old husband, Bob, died suddenly the day after Thanksgiving, 2006. I had purchased this "Bob" book several years ago for him and he got misty-eyed when he read it. At the funeral home, I displayed the book with the last page showing that "Bob is always near." Both family and friends loved it so much, many of them have purchased the same book. I am buying 3 more books for our grandkids and will write a little note in it so they know how much Grandpa loved them and will always be around for them.
Excellent message!.......2003-06-20
What a wonderfully written, beautiful story! I love it more and more each time I read it!
Beutifully written story for all ages........2003-06-20
I was given "A Snowman Named Just Bob" as a present last Thanksgiving and was so touched by the beautiful message of how simple friendship is to start that I bought 15 more for Christmas presents for family and friends! The story is heartwarming and the illustrations are beautiful. I have since purchased 4 more of author Moulton's titles and each is as delightful as the other. I intend to buy every book Mark Kimball Moulton writes!
short on story, long on sentimentality -- in the BAD sense.......2002-12-30
I am VERY confused by the multiple great reviews and 5-star ratings. The text is horrid, and I was surprised to see that the author has written a number of books. This is like an early Hallmark card, the poetry is not good -- "Friendship is a simple thing, The clue is just to start, As long as it is built on trust, And love from in your heart". Nice idea, but do you want to read 30+ pages of this? There is no story and apparently the only reason to own and enjoy this book is if you know someone named Bob. But the thing is, I know some Bobs, and they deserve a better book than this! Who is Bob? What makes him tick? What does Bob the magical snowman ever do in this book besides tell you to remember him?
The art, on the other hand, is charming -- nostalgic folk and traditional themes in blue, rose and gold tones. The font is large and lovely, and the book is physically nice, right down to the tone and weight of the paper and the cover-art box. The artist wisely, else we should miss it, puts a scroll around the book's intellectual circum locus, the only actual words that issue forth from Bob, including "I hope it snows a'plenty so I might stay and share, in all your loving friendship, your thoughtful, tender care". Ouch.
In looking at the author's works, I notice he has worked with a number of illustrators, and I notice that Ms. Crouch has lived in Pennsylvania, Illinois and Wisconsin. THAT is more of a story than is contained in this badly-written poem. I intend to look for more books by illustrator Crouch and steer clear of author Moulton. There are much better children's winter books out there. I bet a few even have a character named Bob.
A Snowman Named Just BOB.......2002-12-05
I was recently given one of these books in memory of my boyfriend BOB. I have since purchased 8 of these books to give to our close friends and neighbors as Christmas gifts in his memory. It is a very touching book and brought tears to my eyes. Bob was also a special person in my life just as the snowman Bob was to his friends in the book. It will be a book that can be read for many years during the holiday season in memory of our friend BOB.

Who needs words to tell a story? In Raymond Briggs's charming tale, told with 175 softly hued, artfully composed frames, a little boy makes friends with a snowman. He wakes up on a snowy day, tells his mother he's going outside, then begins a flurry of snowman-building. That night, he can't sleep, so he opens the front door and lo! the snowman has come to life. The amiable yet frosty fellow enjoys his tour of the boy's cozy home; he admires the cat, but is disturbed by the fire. The boy shows him other wonders--the TV and a lamp and running water. Predictably perhaps, he is disturbed by the stove, but likes ice cubes quite a bit. Soon it is the snowman's turn to introduce the boy to his wintry world. They join hands, rise up into the blizzardy air--presumably over Russia and into the Middle East--and then safely back to home sweet home. The boy pops into bed before his parents get up... but when he wakes up the next morning he races outside only to find his new buddy's melted remains, scattered with a few forlorn lumps of coal. Since the book is wordless, you can make up any ending you want... like "Then, in a puff of pink smoke, the snowman recomposed himself and went to live in the boy's garage freezer." Or you could just resign yourself to a peaceful "And that was that." Raymond Briggs's The Snowman won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award, and this wintertime classic continues to win the hearts of kids every year. (Preschool and older) --Karin Snelson
Book Description

The Snowman.......2007-06-14
A delightful children's movie that I bought for my granddaughter and we have probably watched it over 100 times, as she is in love with it! Great for pre-school children!
An Adventure Worth While.......2007-05-07
Briggs, R. (1978). The snowman. New York: Random House.
Synopsis: What happens when the snowman you built comes to life? Raymond Briggs draws readers into this winter wonderland as a snowman comes to life. The snowman's builder, a young boy, is delighted by the playful and entertaining demeanor of this "cool" friend. In this wordless book, children of all ages are enchanted by the amazing adventures of the boy and snowman. Each picture frame draws young minds into this magical journey through the boy's home and around the world. This tale leaves readers wondering what will happen the next time they make a snowman. Never has a wordless book created such a thrilling story in your mind!
Evaluation: Raymond Briggs draws readers into this beautiful story. Children of all ages love its humor and comical illustrations. Briggs' unique format and illustrations enchant the minds of readers. Readers follow the story board frames with great anticipation of what is coming. Written in 1978, this story is a timeless classic that continues to amaze children of all ages. Some aspects of the story date itself. For example, the boy gets coal for the snowman's buttons from the house's coal bin, as well as the boy's clothes date this book to the 1970's or earlier. This tale is written for children and the adults in their lives. This story takes place in a young boy's home and across the world. Briggs uses brightly colored frames in addition to soft pale shades that balance the warmth of the boy's world with the cold of the snowman's world. The use of colored pencils and story board format, leads the reader frame by frame through the enchanting story. Curiosity leads this snowman through some hilarious antics in the boy's home. For example, the snowman is shocked and frightened by the heat of the fireplace. However, he basks in the comfort of the deep freezer. Other authors like David Wiesner have written and illustrated other amusing wordless books such as Tuesday and Sector 7. These tales along with Briggs' story capture the minds of young readers. Allowing children to make up their own words as they follow the frames engages young readers to reread these books again and again. Educators can use this delightful tale to encourage and assist students in the writing of a story using Briggs' detailed illustrations. The Snowman will thrill your senses and leave you wondering about building your own snowman during the next substantial snowfall.

Simply the best. .......2007-02-04
This classic video is the single best, most dependable product for calming a toddler's tantrums--it's better than anything else I know of for stopping the tears and ending the screaming. My kids watched and loved the video for a couple of years before I got them the book. And now they love to sit by themselves and leaf through the book, too--with the same calming effect. The gorgeous pencil drawings are so different from any other children's book out there--and his use of multi-panelled pages is unique and therefore visually quite interesting to small children. The "sad" ending doesn't seem sad to my kids--it's the only way it the story could end and still have integrity. Do yourself and your kids a favor and buy them both the book and the DVD.
great book.......2007-01-21
i actually bought this book for my husband as his previous copy got ruined. he loves this book. he likes the fact that there are no words so that it is up to the child to use their imagination and their words to tell the story. raymond briggs' artwork is great. we really like this book.
The Snowman.......2007-01-20
"The Snowman" both book & video is a classic, wonderful story without words, but beautiful music & annimation. It engages the child (who is too young to read) & allows them to TELL the story as it progresses. I highly recomend it! It has been around for a while & it remains one of my favorite Christmas stories.
Customer Reviews:
Start here!.......2007-09-29
If you are new to choose your own adventure, I recommend starting with
these 4. They are the first in the new series, and are all individual
books. I am pretty sure they are all reprints, and the art is definitely
new, but they are a great place to start as they cover a wide range of
topics. The bottom line is kids will eat these books up, not just because
they are about great topics, with fun art and very well written but
because they get to choose. They get to pick where they go, what they do,
and all they while they are reading. A warning though, buy this box set
and you might have to by the next.
A classic collection returned.......2007-07-10
Choose Your Own Adventure collections have always been a part of the series, and carrying on that tradition is this collection of the first four books in the newly republished series.
If this is your first trip into CYOA, or are a long time fan coming back, this is collection has a lot to offer. The first four are a nice mix of adventure, mystery, and sci-fi and you get a good feel for the writing of author R.A. Montgomery. The stories have been updated for the times, which is to say the "You" character now has cell phones, GPS and the like. The art has also been redone, but continues to be of excellent quality and pertinent to the choices. Those choices, however, are still the same. They are yours.
There are also collection of 5-8 and 8-12. Six book collections are available as well, but if you are looking to get a started in choosing your own adventure, this collection is a great way to start.
Finally, on a personal note, its great to see the series back!
Warning: These are NOT the original books.......2007-04-21
Don't buy this set expecting a reprinting of the original 1978-1982 Choose Your Own Adventure books. The text has been revised, though the revisions are serviceable enough; but what's worse is that all of the illustrations have been replaced with hideously bad cartoons. Words cannot even express how amateurish and badly drawn these cartoons are, with no sense of proportion, anatomy, lighting, or composition; some appear smudged or to have eraser marks on them, and others have no relevance to the text they are accompanying. And since they're on nearly every page, it's impossible to ignore them.
The exception is The Abominable Snowman, where the pictures are of much better quality (though still not exactly compelling--it seems that the illustrators only read the first two sentences of each page before illustrating it, so that an ending in which the protagonist is killed by a tiger is illustrated by a picture of him slapping mosquitos, for example, because that's what he was doing in the first sentence of the passage.)
Buy used copies of the original books, or choose something else to read. "The Abominable Snowman" is the only one of the set I intend to keep.

Choosing your own adventure= so fun!.......2007-01-04
Wow! This book is great. I remember the Choose Your Own Adventure series were some of the only books I would actually borrow from our elementery school library. It's awesome that they have kept the same stories while giving them new updated covers and artwork. I would definitely reccomend this book for any kid 7 and up, or any adult who read the series as a child. These books really made me want to read as a kid because they let you choose your own story. The Abominable Snowman is probably one of the best ones, the endings are really creative.
RL 4 - 11, Excellent Book- Self Motivation for Reading .......2006-03-29
The Choose Your Own Adventure series is excellent to motivate your children and students to read. The book lets you make your own choices and find out what happens to your character. Kind of like a video game in a book. This particular one The Abominable Snowman is one of RA Montgomery's best and will be lauched on DVD in August of 2006. Imagine being able to make your own choices on DVD and in a Book that effect the outcome of you as the main character.
If you choose to lauch you adventure in reading, go to page 5.
If you choose to miss the biggest thing since Harry Potter, go to page 36.
Good idea, bad execution.......1999-07-08
Back in its heyday, the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series was one of the best, most exciting series for kids there was. Especially good were the ones by Edward Packard. His colleague R.A. Montgomery wrote less successful efforts. This one displays his fondness for negative and often arbitrary endings, as well as for a sort of new agey bizarreness. Ace illustrator Grainger is always good, though I wonder to think that anyone would ever pay for a hardcover of this light text, when a paperback would do.
Will you find the Abominable Snowman?.......1999-03-25
The Abominable Snowman is a great book. You have to find a yeti to proove that he really exists. On your way you'll find a friend to come along. But you never know what will happen next. You have to choose your own advenure. You could find the yeti and become rich and famous, or you find a city you will live in.Or you get scared before you even find the yeti and return back home.
Book Description
One small snowflake fluttering down--
That's all you need for a snowman.
Or is it? In these pages, an exuberant crew is summoned to create a snowman of heroic proportions. Starting with the very first flake, Alice Schertle's clever and energetic rhyming text details the steps these little sculptors take to create a chilly chum. Barbara Lavallee's bold and lively illustrations overflow with brisk winter energy.
Snow, colorful clothes, and a dash of the miraculous combine to shape a winter experience that is both familiar and fantastic.

A Reading-Aloud book.......2006-03-22
This is a good story to read to a group of children. The illustrations are clear and colorful and there is a nice rhythm and rhyme to the text. As the snowman is being built, and his accoutrements added, there is a teasing "except" or "but" before you turn the page, inviting participation and anticipation from the audience. I was surprised and delighted that when a new snowfall invited the construction of a second snowman it turned out to be, not a pet or a snow-wife, but another snowman. Since this is a clear departure from traditional snow-being groups I suspect the author is making a point, but a point so subtle that is only going to be noticeable if someone chooses it to be. If there is an objection to the implied message, there is no problem interpreting the story as a snowman having a snowguy buddy. The book is well worth reading regardless of how you interpret it.
A great snow day story, nothing more than that.......2005-01-28
My 3 yr old son absolutely loves this book and I was pleasantly surprised with the simple rhyming story and how nice it reads aloud. I couldn't disagree more with a previous reviewer's insinuation that this book is depicting a hidden sexual message simply because the two snowmen are male at the end. Last time I checked two men ("snow" or of any other type) can be friends without it meaning anything else. Ridiculous. Like I said, a great inexpensive read - words flow beautifully and the pictures are sweet and great for kids.
All You Need for a Snowman.......2004-12-15
PreS-K. "One small snowflake fluttering down- that's all you need for a snowman. EXCEPT." Alice Schertle uses rhyming, catchy text in describing how to make a snowman. The use of the word "EXCEPT" encourages children to listen closely as they wait for the page to turn. The watercolor paintings help tell the story of neighborhood children working together to build a larger than life snowman. The children, dressed in colorful clothing "pat them and pack them and roll them around," and then, that "one big ball," seems to be larger than a house. The finished snowman is so large the book needs to be turned sideways to see it. These beautiful paintings along with the fun text keep the energy alive in this book. A great book for a snow or snowman themed storytime!
A New Classic!.......2003-01-09
This book, with its inviting watercolors and wonderful use of words is a new favorite of mine. A snowman, built very simply yet lovingly by a neighborhood full of children is perfect for a warm cuddle with your favorite toddler.
A perfect picture book.
