The only thing you have to lose is your weight........2007-09-23
Based on the NBC hit show "The Biggest Loser," this colorful cookbook is a plus to anybody's library that is trying to lose weight or even just eat healthy. The promise of the book is that eating healthy can be quick and delicious AND it doesn't have to mean bland, tasteless food- and the book delivers.
Readers will find a short review of the Biggest Loser's way to lose weight- which is sensible- you eat right and exercise. Then comes the heart of the book- over 100 recipes for the various meals like breakfast, snacks, etc. And unlike a lot of cookbooks, each recipe shows you exactly how many calories, fat grams, protein grams, carb grams, fiber grams, sodium, and cholesterol it contains- which is nice for a wide variety of other populations such as those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease.
A sensible and practical cookbook, a lot of people will probably get their money's worth. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if a shoulder problem keeps you from getting all the benefits of lifting weights.
Some really outstanding healthy recipes in here!.......2007-09-13
I really enjoy this cookbook. I'm not much for cooking, but there are recipes for every type of cook in here. I found some really easy ones that I love to make that even my husband enjoys! it's also very motivating to hear from others who have had struggles similar to my own. I'd definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants to live a healthy lifestyle!
A Good Buy.......2007-08-27
This book has a lot of great recipes and they're pretty basic. I use it to give me meal ideas, especially snacks and breakfast. Although a few of the recipes are very similar, it's still chalk full of delicious recipes, not to mention a little info on all the participants and some basics about the biggest loser eating plan. If you're on the fence, I say go for it.
Some good recipes in the book.......2007-07-27
You may have to acquire a taste for some of the recipes, but it worth the effort to at least try them.
Yum!.......2007-07-19
This is a great cookbook. It has pictures of most of the food, and nutrition facts for EVERYTHING. And the food is delicious. It also includes advice on exercise. The only problem I have--and it's a problem with all "healthy" cookbooks--is that it's hard to find SOME of the ingredients in your average grocery store. I have only had a problem with one or two recipes, and I am sure a trip to a health food store would prove successful, but I am just talking about convenience. Overall, though, I have to say BUY IT.

Book Description
The Biggest Loser was NBCs surprise hit of the Fall 2004 television season, drawing a passionate audience and prompting people nationwide to start their own Biggest Loser competitions. This unscripted weight-loss drama was based on overweight contestants competing to lose weight and win a quarter of a million dollars with the help of a team of doctors, dietitians, and trainers Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels. On the evening that the first seasons finale aired, legions of fans went to the NBC Web site to look for the diet and fitness plan that the contestants used. It wasnt available to the publicuntil now. With this book, people looking for change can accomplish the same type of radical makeover of their bodies, their health, and their lives that they saw on The Biggest Loser. The book features the food and fitness plans from Bob and Jillian, health advice from the shows medical experts, and motivational tips from the contestants themselves. The contestants compelling stories and reasons for losing weight, dramatic before-and-after photos, and real-life advice provide the inspiration and upbeat attitude that made this show a smash hit.
Customer Reviews:
Biggest loser book.......2007-10-10
Book was very informational and inspirering. The food plan and the exercise plan was very easy to follow. It also helped reading about the biggest losers from season 1 & 2. What helped them, their tips on eating and exercising. Also getting tips from the trainers was helpful.
As good as the TV show.......2007-09-21
"The Biggest Loser" diet suggests limiting your daily calorie intake to seven times your body weight (measured in pounds). For a 200 pound person that means 1400 calories a day. This might be OK for an average weight but I am not sure if the formula is proper for very heavy or very light people. So, from that point of view I find this book not very scientific. On the other hand the exercise plan suggested in the book is pretty reasonable. There are also a lot of other good advice that will help you take a long term control of you weight and will result in a good health: stay away from sugar (except for natural sugars contained in fruits), eat salad before each meal, exercise, and so on. For much more comprehensive advice on adopting healthy lifestyle, resulting in permanent weight loss I rather recommend "Can We Live 150 Year?" by M. Tombak. A lot of free excerpts from Tombak's book can be found at the author's website.
Great Book.......2007-09-13
I love this book because all the recipes are so easy and a lot of them are not time consuming. I like the fact that the book has a lot of simple snack and appetizer recipes.
Fantastic.......2007-09-11
I have the whole series and am giving them as Christmas presents to all my friends that watch the show. I gave one for a Birthday present and she is thrilled, we can all get motivated and loose the weight. Love It!
Great Book!.......2007-07-19
I have found this book to be great! It is a simple plan to follow and very adaptable. The first day, although I was worried I'd be hungry, I felt full and content. I am enjoying this new way of eating. I was inspired because a friend of mine was on last season's show and he lost a lot of weight and to this day looks great!

A useful resource that's packed with information on the calorie content of everyday foods and even fast food restaurant choices.
biggest loser calorie counter.......2007-03-16
This book was very disappointing. It certainly did live up to the reviews I read. I am a physician and ordered ten of these books for the patients I teach diet therapy to. The book was difficult to find items in the manner that they were subdivided. Once the subdivision was found, it was then noted to be limited, and certainly not very comprehensive.

Customer Reviews:
An enlighting book.......2007-09-25
This book gives a further mesage than "buy an index fund". It gives the reader a pragmatic view of investing. The message should be this "Investor know yourself and the scenario where your playing, then act consecuently". Investing is a serious activity and should be taken seriously. Too many traps are set for those who take it as game and too many avoidable dissapointments take place. This book is a great book and a must read for anybody, particularly for those who want to invest their money. For those who may want further reading I would encourage them to read Wealth: Grow It, Protect It, Spend It, and Share It (Paperback) (Wharton School Publishing Paperbacks) and The Little Book of Common Sense Investing: The Only Way to Guarantee Your Fair Share of Stock Market Returns (Little Book Big Profits), they're both easy to read and will give you further knowledge of how seriously investing is.
Ellis doesn't believe his own advice.......2007-05-16
Ellis manages an active fund, which completely goes against the premise of his book. If he truley believes what he wrote, he would act accordingly. However, that isn't why I gave the book 2 stars. I gave the book 2 stars because it is basically a 2-3 page paper expanded to be a full book by using fillers. There is one simple concept, and it doesn't take an entire book to get across.
A classic book on investing.......2007-02-09
Charles was not the first to blow the whistle on active investing but was the first to write a book for the average investor. His advise and counsel are outstanding. In fact he has been called by the current administration to establish criteria for self funded social security investing. The book is a basic tutorial every investor should have on his bookshelf.
Piscaqua Research in a study covering the period 1987-96 found that only 10 out of 145 major pension funds, or just seven percent, out performed a portfolio consisting of a simple 60%/40% mix of the S&P 500 index and the Lehman Bond index respectively.
Or is it logical I ask for you to believe that you can predict which actively managed funds will out perform, or are you overconfident of your skills? If you are trying to find the great fund managers who will out perform in the future ask yourself: what am I going to do differently in terms of identifying the future winning fund managers, than did the pension plans and their advisors? And if you are not going to something different what logic is there in playing a game at which others with superior resources have consistently failed?
If you a really serious in finding an investment technique that will provide you with reasonable return with less risk I suggest the following little book. This is a little book that I have written and contains the essential of how to invest. Just click on the title to find the book.
The book is titled How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 different stocks for $1000 - Pay no Commission. Easy to read packed with precise directions for success. A cookbook for the investor just follow directions. I enjoyed this book a great deal. It shows how indexing and diversification strategies work and why they are so important to investing success. Unlike many other books, this one is not only informative, but also useful. There should be no question as how to implement the author's strategy and measure your progress. He skillfully addresses asset allocation, and shows how to minimize tax consequences by assigning securities to tax deferred accounts. The author does not dwell on lengthy longwinded discussions but cuts to the quick with useful recommendation and directions for the novice and experienced investor as well. I recommend this book for all investors.Just click on the underlined title to go to the reviews of the book. The author answers all yiur questions by Email within 24 hours. How to Make Money in the Stock Market-Buy 2,500 Different Stocks-Pay no Commission
well written and sensible book on investing.......2007-01-09
The basic idea of winning the loser's game is:
* Institutional fund managers are 90% of the market volume, they *are* the market.
* institutional fund managers, as a whole, on the long term, underperform the market
* the stock market is a loser's game. it's characterized by the behavior of the losers. (ie. all those professional fund managers)
* if you can match the market, you're beating 80% of fund managers.
* Therefore winning at a loser's game involves using index funds to match the market.
The book's forward is written by Vanguard's CEO, and Vanguard is famous for its index funds. Overall, it amounts to well-written sensible advice for investors, although it would be best to take it only on face-value, with due consideration to other theories out there.
One to own.......2006-11-03
This is the most concise and on target investment book I have come across in my 35 year career in finance. As I read it, my most frequent comment to myself was "I wish I could have said that". I actually found myself getting jealous of Ellis' ability to put things so clearly and concisely.
Worth reading and worth owning so you can lend it to friends.
Book Description
The social minefields most privileged middle-school girls drive the over-the-top drama in this addictive new book, set in suburban New York City's Westchester County. Massie Block: With her glossy brunette bob and Whitestrip smile, Massie is the uncontested ruler of The Clique and the rest of the social scene at Octavian Country Day, an exclusive private school in Westchester, New York. Dylan Marvil: Massie's second in command who divides her time between sucking up to Massie and sucking down Atkins shakes to try to get rid of the extra fifteen pounds that won't seem to leave her hips alone. Alicia Rivera: As sneaky as she is beautiful, Alicia floats easily under adult radar because she seems so 'sweet.' Would love to take Massie's throne one day. Just might do it. Kristen Gregory: She's been dying to fit in ever since her parents went broke. She's smart, hardworking and will insult you to tears faster than you can say 'scholarship kid.' And then there's Claire Lyons, the new girl in two-year old GAP overalls from Florida, who is clearly not Clique material. The only problem is that Claire's family is staying in the guest house on the Blocks' massive estate while they look for a new home! Claire's future looks worse than a bad Prada knockoff. But with a little luck and a lot of scheming, Claire might just come up smelling like Chanel Mademoiselle....

Dial L for Loser.......2007-09-17
I thought the book was very interesting. It made you want to keep reading. This book was my favorite so far in the series but it left you hanging in the end I can't wait til I get to read the next one. Lisi Harrison is a great writer for teens.
Sealed with a Diss.......2007-09-10
This book was absolutley fabulous. I love how Lisi Harrison keeps you on the edge and anticipating the next word (or in Massie's case, a clever comeback!) These books are fun filled and action packed, a great read for anyone 10 or older. I recomend this series to everyone, and I cannot wait for the next book!
More More MORE!.......2007-08-17
I loved this book, but I hated the fact that it ended like it did and the next one doesn't come out til next year. That sux! But the book itself was )as most cliques are) drama filled and intense. The life of an alpha is so not as great as it seems. And the poor girls and their crushes I mean you have GOT to feel sorry for them.
This story takes you on a journey that ended quite abrubtly, and will begin again in February 2008!!! Man I can't wait!!!!!♥
Another ah-mazing Clique book!.......2007-08-06
I have really enjoyed ALL of the books in the Clique series. I am a middle school teacher, and have shared my love of reading with many girls via the Clique books. These books are perfect for a hesistant reader- they are so engaging and fun to read. They are also age-appropriate, unlike some other series that are marketed to young girls.
Massie and the Pretty Committee do not disappoint in the 8th book of this series. The dialog is snappy as always, and left me looking forward to the 9th book!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-30
this is my favorite book out of the clique series so far. i'm not going to tell you what happened but it's a real cliff hanger. anyway it's a great book and i gaurantee that you won't want to put the book down.

ASIN: 0679748253
Release Date: 1993-11-02 |
Book Description
One of the best-known experimental novels of the 1960s, Beautiful Losers is Cohen’s most defiant and uninhibited work. The novel centres upon the hapless members of a love triangle united by their sexual obsessions and by their fascination with Catherine Tekakwitha, the 17th-century Mohawk saint.
By turns vulgar, rhapsodic, and viciously witty, Beautiful Losers explores each character’s attainment of a state of self-abandonment, in which the sensualist cannot be distinguished from the saint.
From the Paperback edition.
Customer Reviews:
A Searing & Ecstatic Vision.......2006-09-15
"Beautiful Losers" merges the profane with the sacred to create an unforgettable, disturbing and wildly elated vision. Using masterful stream-of-consciousness, Leonard Cohen breaks the barriers: nothing is off-limits, nothing is too precious, nothing is too spiritual. Everything, including all forms of erotic acts, will be desecrated on these pages: but none of the writing is gratuitous. With every blasphemous thought and image, we are drawn into an ecstatic spiritual quest, such that in the midst of an insanely orgasmic scene, replete with blood, violence, debilitating pleasure, we find this treasure:
("O Father, Nameless and Free of Description, lead me from the Desert of the Possible. Too long I have dealt with Events. Too long I labored to become an Angel. I chased Miracles with a bag of Power to salt their wild Tails. I tried to dominate Insanity so I could steal its Information. I tried to program the Computers with Insanity. I tried to create Grace to prove that Grace e isted. ... We could not see Evidence stretched our Memories. Dear Father, accept this confession: we did not train ourselves to Receive because we believed there wasn't Anything to Receive and we could not endure with this Belief.")
At the center of the novel is the unforgettable "F", the great iconoclast, the sexualist searching for the divine experience, the man who betrays with joy, who gives and receives pain with bliss, who howls out his darkness in a search for light.
Readers who relate to "Beautiful Losers" may also be open to "Miss MacIntosh My Darling", "Art and Lies", and (of course) Satre's "No Exit." Still, to see such roaring poetry and prose bundled into a novel is rare, and "Beautiful Losers" is one-of-a-kind.
Cohen the Novelist .......2006-05-26
Having avoided Leonard Cohen for so long, lumping him with the "classic rock" I found annoying, I'm now in the midst of a serious Leonard Cohen Obsession by way of a Jeff Buckley cover and then this massively brilliant, inspired and dense, genuis, pornographic, and simply awesome novel. The language in this book is so alive, you would think it would grow flesh on the page. Any passage rivals Henry Miller, James Joyce, Gabriel Garcia Marquez. If you're looking for a plot-driven page turner, go elsewhere. This is the stuff of serious linguistic revelry, for people who like to read books that make you jealous that he wrote it, and you didn't.
Like: Days without work. Why did that list depress me? I should never have made the list. I've done something bad to your belly, Edith. I tried to use it. I tried to use your belly against the Plague. I tried to be a man in a padded locker room telling a beautiful smutty story to eternity. I tried to be an emcee in a tuxedo arousing a lodge of honeymooners, my bed full of golf windows. I forgot that I was desperate. I forgot that I began this research in desperation. My briefcase fooled me. My tidy notes led me astray. I thought I was doing a job.
Or: Oh God, Your Morning Is Perfect. People Are Alive In Your World. I Can Hear The Little Children In The Elevator. The Airplane Is Flying Through The Original Blue. Mouths Are Eating Breakfast. The Radio Is Filled With Electricity. The Trees Are Excellent.
[It goes on for two pages like this, beautiful, perfect.]
So, I would have to say that I give this an effusive six out of five stars.
And, I should add, Leonard Cohen is NOT dead! He is a Zen monk. Where are the novels that he was supposed to write for us? He was cheated out of his retirement fund by an ex-wife/manager. You should buy this book so he can retire comfortably, as he should, one of the great genuises of the English language that has been overshadowed by the filthy stupidity of the rock industry of America.
The end !
this is hard to write... but not as hard to read as this book.......2006-02-11
I ordered this and The Favorite Game, taking advantage of Amazons buy two and get a deal policy.
I didn't like this book at all. It doesn't feel as natural as Favorite Game, it doesn't flow like FG and doesn't delieve like FG.
I don't know what Mister Cohen was trying to accomplish... James Joyce or Henry Miller lost generation of Montreal?
The only reason I gave this two stars instead of one is solely on my adoration of the author.
Music.......2005-09-03
This book is a really long song. It's beautiful and flowing and drowning. It is the song of a siren luring you into the depths of rocks and flowers. Beautiful Losers is a great read whether in one day or a year. I recommend it and forcefully push it upon you as a must read.
Entertaining but I am not yet convinced of its greatness........2005-06-01
Beautiful Losers is impressive as a work of free association, of stark poetic imagery, of isolation and even, at moments, filth and loathing. Cohen deftly navigates the sublime as both beautiful, delicate and vauntedly tragic and as self-indulgent, filthy, desperate, despondent and ill. I admire his work for this reason, he seems able to strip his descriptions of any political or even polemical quality. And, in spite of this apparent "honesty," I never get the sense the world has lost its beauty or wonder in his eyes. It is disinterest, I suppose, that makes him delve so deeply into his subject. And what isn't his subject?
Catherine Tekawitha is a saint, an Iroquois who forsook her faith and became a Catholic. Her healing powers and capacity for suffering are well within the purview of the Catholic metaphysic. She is a mysterious creature not of the stone chapels and cloistered gradens of Europe but of the North American wilderness, a wilderness surrounding Montreal, city of the protagonist's birth and the place he calls home. This wilderness, both real and perceived, never ceases to suffuse the intellect and libido of the narrator. He chooses St. Kateri as his life's work, discoursing (in French and English) on her history and the many reasons she is both a saint and a legend. Her transcendent power is a source of desire for this young man who has married an Iroquois woman himself and appears to try and make St. Kateri a presence in his own conjugal bed.
But his wife dies. Commits suicide. She was long suffering, misunderstood and even neglected by her lover. Our protagonist remembers her in all of her potency before she took her own life. Is she his wife? Is she the reincarnation of Catherine? Who is she? And what does he want from her? From anyone? He lives in his cloistered apartment that, after his wife's suicide, becomes filled with filth. He seldom removes himself from this degradation and only a male friend/lover can bring him, moment to moment, out of himself.
He is searching for a teacher, longing for someone to show him how to forget himself. It is this search that makes you wonder whether all of this suffering and loss and wastefulness is self-imposed. The narrator is enraptured by St. Kateri's pain threshold, her self-abnegation, the way her scarred body heals itself upon her death. The mysteries of her flesh are many and this apparent detachment of body and spirit (is it detachment really? Cohen makes you wonder) leads her to sainthood, to communion. Does the narrator want the same? He lives in a world where his flesh is not entirely his ally. He has trouble admitting to himself he is bisexual and has a steady liason with his male friend from childhood. This distress, confusion and internal conflict appears to lead him toward this great suffering woman.
But is this a great work? I am not yet convinced. Like Joyce and Miller, Cohen has no trouble bringing forward a variety of stunning images. But is this style over substance? In Joyce I can grasp his intentions and am more easily led toward the development of his aesthetic. Here, I am more resistant. Is there a great story being told within these pages? The jury is still out on this question for me. However, maybe you will decide for yourself? I certainly believe this is worth your effort.
Four stars.

Book Description
The greatest cultural accomplishments in history have never been the result of the brainstorms of marketing men, corporate focus groups, or any homogenized methods; they have always happened organically. More often than not, these manifestations have been the result of a few like-minded people coming together to create something new and original for no other purpose than a common love of doing it. In the 1990s, a loose-knit group of American artists and creators, many just out of their teens, began their careers in just such a way. Influenced by the popular underground youth subcultures of the day, such as skateboarding, graffiti, street fashion, and independent music, artists like Shepard Fairey, Mark Gonzales, Spike Jonze, Margaret Kilgallen, Mike Mills, Barry McGee, Phil Frost, Chris Johanson, Harmony Korine, and Ed Templeton began to create art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Many had no formal training and almost no conception of the inner workings of the art world. They learned their crafts through practice, trial and error, and good old-fashioned innovation. Not since the Beat Generation have we seen a group of creative individuals with such a unified aesthetic sense and varied cultural facets. The world of art has been greatly affected by their accomplishments as have the worlds of fashion, music, literature, film, and, ironically, athletics. Beautiful Losers is a retrospective celebration of this spirit, with hundreds of artworks by over two dozen artists, from precursors like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Larry Clark, to more recent adherents Ryan McGinniss, KAWS, and Geoff McFetridge. Work in all conceivable mediums is included, plus reproductions of reams of ephemera. The accompanying essays are contributed by a half-dozen writers who have championed these beautiful losers from the start. This paperback reprint includes more pages, more images, an exhibition checklist, installation shots from a variety of exhibitions, and an interview with Beautiful Losers advocate, Agnes B.

THE BOOK NEVER CAME........2006-06-28
I ordered this book from Amazon as a graduation gift and it says that it will ship in 1-4 weeks. BEWARE! I placed my order in mid-May and received a third delay notice today saying that it will not ship until mid-August. BOLLOCKS!! I finally canceled my order, as my "happy graduation" note is no longer applicable and my guy will likely be in school for the fall semester by the time the book actually arrives.
A Historicly important exhibition catalog with great essays. .......2005-10-09
Beautiful Losers exhibition is a document of an epoch centered on the twenty year history of street art and culture from the walls of urban landscapes across America to the walls of the dopest west and east coast galleries. Really great essays. Read the one by McCormick, its especially good. Well printed and designed. Everything in this book is imperative to know about if you are an artist, especially young artists in their formative years.
Great pictures, great read.......2005-04-03
Its definately worth $25.17, or whatever price theyve stuck on it by now. Its includes pictures of, and interesting stories about a few of the Beautiful Losers aswell as full pages of artwork (in color). Its no picture book either, in addition to the stories, its got the histories of various subcultures that influenced the artists (skateboarding, graffiti, etc.) So it'll keep you busy for a minute.
Book Description
For Anyone Who's Ever Been a Teenager
Who's teenage years weren't terrible? Remember the scary older kids? The sadistic gym teacher? The smelly kid who sat next to you in science class? Your first fumbling kiss? That time you threw up in the cafeteria? Your first attempt at putting on a condom? The period that arrived unexpectedly? That awful fight with your parents? The first time you got drunk? That note you wrote that you shouldn't have written? The day you forgot to zip your fly? That monster zit? When, you wondered, would it all end?
In When I Was a Loser, John McNally, author of the novel America's Report Card, assembles twenty-five original essays--often hilarious, sometimes tenderhearted, always evocative--about defining moments of high school loserdom. Brad Land, Julianna Baggott, Owen King, Johanna Edwards, and many more fresh, talented writers explore their own angst, humiliation, heartache, and other staples of teen life.
These essays perfectly capture what it was like to be in high school: to experience so many things for the first time, to assert independence while desperately trying to fit in, to feel misunderstood and unable to articulate the wild swings between heartbreak, anger, and euphoria. One writer recalls how his grandmother helped him with his home perm in preparation for the Senior Class picture; another recounts her discovery, sometime after hitting puberty, of the power she held over boys and men, while at the same time she felt herself at their mercy; a third remembers the casual cruelties visited on him by the cooler kids, and the cruelties he, in turn, inflicted on kids below him on the social ladder.
Utterly candid and compulsively readable, these essays conjure up and untangle those raw and formative years. The writers cringe and laugh at the teenagers they were, but at the same time, they honor their adolescence and the way it shaped their lives. Because, in truth, beneath the layers of adult respectability, we all still carry a little bit of our teenage selves around with us.

Get in touch with your inner loser!.......2007-07-19
This is a wonderful collection of stories about the angst of our high school days, when each of us secretly believed that everyone else had mastered the art of being cool, but we alone failed to fit in. All the stories are terrific, but I especially enjoyed John McNally's funny and sensitive "Hair Today..." and Quinn Dalton's haunting "Do Not Wear Green on Wednesdays". I had not previously read anything by many of the authors whose work appears in this volume, so it will serve as a roadmap in discovering the rest of their work.
No matter what memories you carry of your teen years, you will find something in this book you can relate to, and enjoy.
Catharic release of high school idiocy........2007-04-11
This book is the type that everyone can relate to, despite the ages of the authors. That is, unless you haven't been to high school, and/or you're extremely conservative, and/or not open to the strong individual voices of each of the contributors to the collection. For an educated younger person today (and I'd like to hope that most people know who Zsa Zsa Gabor is) the cultural references work- and if they don't- that younger person needs to educate themselves further on aspects of culture apart from Lil' John and Britney Spears.
The highlights for me were "My Friend Likes You", a hilarious and sad look at how a woman develops her penchant for unrequited love, and "Hair Today..." by John McNally, dealing with going bald at a young age and how hair is a huge part of our identity (especially in high school, when hair is your identity completely, which is further evidenced by Elizabeth Crane's piece, "White Anklets and Blue Anything" and "Scoliosis and an Ogilvie Home Perm" by Timothy Schaffert. Actually, a lot of the pieces address this critical issue of hair- and admit- when you're in high school, that is a critical issue!) Tod Goldberg's piece, "The B-List Rings Twice", is also hilarious and completely absurd, in an entertaining way.
Each of the pieces brings something different to the larger tapestry of adolescent misery, and reading it made me feel better about my own lingering high school trauma, because I got to laugh and relate to that of others. Even reading some pieces with my younger tutee made her laugh, because the stories transcend the time in which any of the authors write about: they are universal stories.
If you like this book, I recommend "The Book of Ralph" by John McNally.
Maybe you had to be there........2007-04-10
I was sucked into this one from my usually reliable source, an interview with the author on NPR. What did not occur to me was that I would end up with all the cheap uses of the 'F' word from these late baby-boomer authors. So, a word of warning: If you were hoping for something closer to the early baby-boomer observations of a Sedaris, with which the Amazon marketing machine mistakenly connects this book, you won't find it here.

Book Description
Is he a Leech? Or Mr. Ego? Or The Burdened Beast? Learn the twenty-five different loser types of men and how to send them out of your life!
Sure he's gorgeous, funny, and charming--but early in any doomed relationship there are warning signals foretelling the bad news to come. Studies show that most women will try to justify these signs, excusing them so they don't interfere with their fantasy of having met the perfect man. Unfortunately, such signs are usually all too prophetic--they are the essence of what Drs. Gary Aumiller and Daniel Goldfarb call "Red Flags." The question then becomes how to detect and respond to a Red Flag before it's too late. This first-of-its-kind book will help readers determine a man's all-important "loser potential" within the first three dates.
Each chapter includes a profile of a different loser, a post-date quiz to help you determine if Mr. Right is Mr. Wrong, and important information about the best way to break up with him. Red Flags has all the fun of a magazine quiz combined with the expertise of psychologists who specialize in the techniques used by the police to profile criminals. They know how to spot the rejects--and now you will, too!
"After reading Red Flags you'll never be stuck in a bad relationship again. Thank you, Doctors Aumiller and Goldfarb, for writing the book every dating woman needs!"--Sharyn Wolf, author of Guerrilla Dating Tactics

Gotta Have it BOTH Ways..........2007-01-30
There are so many books available on Amazon & the public Library that are guides for Women avoiding "bad" Men, but how many are out there that do the opposite??? I'd like to know...
This is one of the better ones, especially with its point-checklists at the end of each description, but it is easy to get the feeling that this unilateral masterpiece is just following the river rapids of similar "Ladies avoid Mr. Wrong" books out there. I'd like to see a companion volume set up as this one was (Description, sample conversation, whys & wherefores, point-count checklist, and score interpretation). Maybe the title "Pink Flags"? (Is she a gold-digger? Is she a Nomad? Is she a Daddy's Girl? etc.)
One other criticism--many of the traits listed are superficial, not globally oriented (example--Does he look downward while conversing, or do his eyes dart around? Well, is this in reference to GENERAL behavior, or does it only apply to your (current) date, or behavior toward you specifically?) This especially would apply to behavior signifying any of the more violent or extreme categories. Then it tends to generalize.
Great Help!.......2007-01-11
This book has helped me through a lot of bad times. Would recommend to any in a relationship that you feel is at a stand still. The guidance is helpful.
i really don't wanna put a title.......2005-11-15
To the other reviewers here: I can't believe you actually needed the book to outline specifically that you're not SUPPOSED to follow all the guidelines... did you seriously not understand that all on your own? You're supposed to take what you can and cannot deal with and go with that. For example, I can deal with people being late all the time, because I am too.
Regardless, I found it rather useful. I tend to believe that 'our society' tends to normalize a lot of innapropriate dating behaviors (of men and women alike), and this book helps point them out.
Can't say I'm disappointed.
Fantastic!.......2004-11-17
Sure, you need to take some of this advice with a grain of salt, but the reason that men have gotten away with a lot of the stuff they've pulled is because women put up with it. It's eye-opening to read this book and see so many people you've known described down to the smallest detail. Women deserve to be treated well. This book helps identify the men who aren't going to do that.
Wrong idea.......2004-03-27
This book is just too simplistic in its recipes for detecting the wrong man. Basically, it assumes that all women want to marry the same type of "ideal" man. Is this really the case? not very likely. Its pretty sad if you need a book like this to tell you who to date. Plenty of people who live with their heads in the clouds are going to go through life single, giving them plenty of time to read this.

Greer Childers, age 53 and mother of three, credits her BodyFlex method with dropping her from a size 14/16 to a size 4/6 in 90 days. Childers had tried jogging, aerobics, and personal trainers; she got firmer but no smaller, and felt tired all the time. "In terms of being a couch potato, I was definitely mashed," she writes. Then she discovered what she calls "aerobic breathing" and claims she started burning off inches. Fitness and weight-loss experts would argue that aerobic exercise--not just breathing--is what burns fat, but Childers insists the method has worked for her and her clients.
Be a Loser presents Childers's own story about trying to lose weight and her theory about weight loss--that oxygen is "the non-medical miracle" and that learning how to breathe "aerobically" is her secret for weight loss. She teaches her breathing technique and a series of simple stretches and nonstrenuous calisthenic exercises that she claims "tone muscle."
Book Description
It takes only 15 minutes a day, and there's no dieting! Greer Childers shows how to lose inches from your waist, hips, and thighs in the very first week. Using the revolutionary BodyFlex program, readers can tone away flab and increase energy through accelerated aerobic deep breathing with stretching, isometric, and isotonic exercises.
A bestseller in hardcover, with over 100,000 copies shipped, Be a Loser! describes the BodyFlex program, includes specialized workouts for problem areas with clearly illustrated instructions on technique, and explains the scientific basis for the program. Bubbling over with the homespun enthusiasm, humor, and can-do optimism of its irrepressible author, Be a Loser! is an easy and fun way to get in shape and increase vitality.
Customer Reviews:
Silly.......2007-05-06
I bought this book because of all the hype in the reviews thinking it must be good. I also bought the VHS. Well the tapes are ridiculous. The book is ridiculous too. Trust me, eat healthy, get some dumbbells and exercise dvds and take the stairs instead of the elevator and you'll slowly lose weight. this is a silly marketing gimick.
Hype, Not Help.......2007-04-06
As a reviewer said below, Greer Childers is convincing. I want to lose ten pounds I gained after going from an active job to a passive job, and actually fell for her latest -- The Seven Minute Solution. The Seven Minute Solution amounts to seven minutes of isometric exercise, a sensible diet, and lots of water. (How stupid do these marketing pros think we are?) There is absolutely nothing in The Seven Minute Solution about breathing. Absolutely nothing. After doing some online research about Greer and her obviously carefully-sculpted body, I realize I fell for the fourth of her various "miracle" solutions. All of her "miracle" solutions are very different, so apparently she'll market anything she thinks will sell. I feel like an idiot.
If you're looking for a way to boost your metabolism through breathing, there are a couple of great books and tapes on the subject here at Amazon (Jumpstart Your Metabolism is a good book some of my former Yoga students use, and Oxygenate is a sensible book and/or tape which unfortunately didn't make it to DVD). I taught Yoga three nights a week for over fifteen years, and breathing really does seem to make a difference in weight loss and maintenance. But Be A Loser won't give you enough information to do much of anything. It's just another of Greer Childers' huge disappointments.
Go From Size 18 to 4?.......2007-03-01
Peggy Griffin from Sacramento says she lost 14 dress sizes on BodyFlex. Maybe she did. But she also lists a high intensity cardio DVD review on her "See All My Reviews" list. I have to think some of her weight loss has been from the cardio workout she did for 11 of those 18 months she attributes to BodyFlex. Just a heads-up to everybody.
Good exercise that you can also use with others.......2006-09-09
I have to admit I was sceptical when I read this book, and only did so because of a friend's recommendation. However, I have been doing the program for a couple of months, and while I haven't noticed that much inch loss, I have been feeling much more energetic and look toned. The secret is in the breathing exercise--it is fantastic done on its own, or even before Pilates or Callanetics exercises (especially the stomach ones).
16 months of BF DVD and down from 18+ pants to 4-6 .......2006-05-25
I use the DVD version of BF every day, and occasionally the exercises from the book. I'm a computer nut so I wanted the DVD to watch. I have to have a workout that I can see and follow step by step and this one is great! I cannot do any of the exercises that require me to place the gymbar over the back of neck, so I just skip those. I was 160 pounds and too overweight to do floor exercises. At first the breathing and toning effects were difficult, but that got easier within 2 weeks. Every morning, before I eat, I do one set of the DVD exercises and my upper abs have shrunk from 37 down to 32, my waist shrunk from a 39 to a 33, my lower abs shrunk from a 41 down to 38, and my hips are now 39" instead of 44. Before I started this workout I looked rather like a huge pear and was ashamed of my huge stomach. I wear a size 10 instead of a size 18, and in the next several months I know I will continue to lose at least an inch a month. The biggest 15 inch loss was in the first 6 weeks of starting BF. Since then the loss is slow but steady. Now I measure and weigh once a month, do my excercises, do not diet at all, and enjoy the results. I'm planning on this DVD as exercise for life. All done while sitting in a chair! Fabulous program. I tried the exercises in Greer's book after 6 months of toning up on the DVD exercises, and I actually could do them! I still prefer the DVD! Do it in the AM, like brushing your teeth, and then forget about it all and enjoy the day. First two things I noticed on BF was the fast initial loss of inches, and my "chicken neck" disappeared! I was so happy to see all parts of my tone up. Do the breathing right and it all works fine. Exhale gently, inhale through the nose fast and deeply and immediately exhale through the mouth, pulling your diaphram (and I pull in my stomach muscles at the same time, something I added) and hold those sucked in and up parts in position for 8 seconds. It's easy to hold to the count of 8 because you are not holding air in which builds pressure. Don't give up Gals and Guys. BF is working on your entire body. The gymbar adds resistance to the movements and is done towards the end of the workout. UPDATE: Been doing BF video for 16 months and can wear a size 4-6 pants. A bit of tummy left, but I look toned all over, not flabby. Surprisingly, weigh about 130, down from 160, only a 30 lb. weight loss, but all the way down from size 18-1X in pants to a size 4-6 but they have elastic waist! [...]
