Book Description
One of the true classics of American literature, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has stirred the imagination of young and old alike for over four generations. Originally published in 1900, it was the first truly American fairy tale, as Baum crafted a wonderful fantasy out of such familiar items as a cornfield scarecrow, a mechanical woodman, and a humbug wizard who used old–fashioned hokum to express that universal theme, "There's no place like home."
Follow the adventures of young Dorothy Gale and her dog, Toto, as their Kansas house is swept away by a cyclone and they find themselves in a strange land called Oz. Here she meets the Munchkins and joins the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion on an unforgettable journey to the Emerald City, where lives the all–powerful Wizard of Oz.
This lavishly produced facsimile of the rare first edition contains all 24 of W.W. Denslow's original colour plates, the colourful pictorial binding, and the 130 two–colour illustrations that help make The Wonderful Wizard of Oz so special and enduring.

Wizard of Oz.......2007-08-01
I love this book! I like it even better than the movie! I am glad I bought it to keep. It came really fast and was in good condition. The artwork in this book was a little different than another one I had read, but I still like it alot.
The wonderful wizard of oz.......2007-02-20
I must first say that I first read this book as an adult after many years of watching the movie. While I am glad that I finally read the book I have to say that for me the movie was much better.
An Ageless Classic For All Ages.......2006-08-29
As a child, I had the movie based off of this book memorized. The movie was a classic favorite of mine, this during a time when the Wizard of Oz was broadcasted yearly, when there were only 4 or 5 channels on the television (at least that we were able to get reception on) and when the battle between VHS and Beta was still abound. And at this age, during this era -- it never really occured to me that all this wonder was based off of a book even older than the movie.
Finally, many years later, I've read this book as an adult, and find myself in even more awe that I was as a child mezmorized by the movie. The characters are all much more developed, and so adorable and innocent, you can't help but love them. The differences between the movie and the book are very facinating. I found it interesting how things where switched around, reused, edited, and added.
A must read for everyone, children and adults alike. We've all seen the movie, now it's time to read the book and hear the story as it was in its orginal splendor.
"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" .......2006-04-01
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, is the first book of the Oz series by L. Frank Baum. Written in 1900, it could be considered America's first fairy tale. The book is different from the famous 1939 movie in that it is clear that Dorothy Gale falls asleep and dreams the characters and situations that teach her the home spun virtues of L. Frank Baum's America.
I felt a true kinship with Dorothy because both she and I have lived through a tornado. When I was eleven years old I was home alone during the tornado that hit Osceola. I can imagine what Dorothy felt during her tranportation by the tornado from Kansas to Oz. The book kept me wondering what marvelous adventure Dorothy and her companions would have next. The virtues of wisdom, love and courage are represented by the characters of the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion. These are the virtues we all should be striving to find within ourselves and see in others. I would recommend this book for everyone no matter what age. The Wonderful wizard of Oz is truly an American classic.
A Book Better Than the Movie.......2005-12-22
The Wizard of Oz, by L. Frank Baum, receives four out of five stars from me.
This book receives four out of five stars from me because it is a wonderful children's classic that has survived for a very long time. It broadens the imaginations and extents the mind of its readers. I take away the fourth star because in the book, the tin man chops off the animals' heads. I think this matter could be handles in a different, more mature way. This book (in all other ways) is very child friendly and does not talk about blood and gore as other books would. The child's imagination will run wild with Dorothy, the Scarecrow, Toto, and all of their friends as they venture down the Yellow Brick Road to Emerald City to see the Wizard of Oz, the greatest wizard of all time. Will the strange group of friends receive their greatest desires? Or will they be sent home disappointed?
I think this book is better than the movie because the movie leaves out some interesting but yet important parts. Like when the unfortunate group falls under the curse of the Poppy Field, the Queen of the Field Mice carries them to safety. She also helps them at many other parts of the adventure. This was a page turner for me and I would recommend it to all my friends.
I am a Middle School student and enjoy playing basketball, swimming and friends. I will also read anything fantasy.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the publication of L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz, master paper engineer Robert Sabuda has created a pop-up version of Dorothy's adventures in Oz that fans will find hard to resist. Modeling his depictions of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the rest after W. W. Denslow's original art, Sabuda adds a third dimension that would have rocked Denslow's--and Baum's--world. A rapidly spinning cyclone actually casts a breeze over the startled reader's face. Glorious red poppies wave seductively in a field. And the Emerald City positively glitters with green, especially when young readers try on the special tinted "Spectacles for You" provided in a pocket on the page. The abridged text, provided in minibooklets set onto each page, covers enough basics for the Oz novice, but we recommend a read-aloud of the original, as well, for all the glory and detail of Baum's fantastic tale. Sabuda's homage to the classic is truly spectacular; even purists will gasp in delight at the sight of the humbug wizard floating away in his shiny green, gold, and blue hot-air balloon. This great introduction to the story of Oz doubles as a fun collector's item. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

Wow!.......2007-08-23
I collect pop-up books and this is one of the best ever created. Every page is well crafted, whimsically thought out, a sheer delight! This makes a fabulous birthday present for young and old.
I adore Robert Sabuda! He makes me gush like a kid. You will be dazzled!
Captivating.......2007-08-23
This is the first pop-up book that I have seen since I was a child, and I must say, pop-ups have come a long way! I bought this for my 6-year-old neice, and she just loves it. The pop-ups are so imaginative, there are mini-books throughout, she loves showing it to people with the admonishment to "be careful!" The story is different from the movie, it conforms to the actual book, but she hasn't seemed to notice. I actually read it cover to cover before I gave it to her. It's a wonderful collector's item and keepsake (if it doesn't get destroyed by her baby brother!)
Great gift for adults and well behaved children.......2007-08-06
I gave this pop-up book as a Christmas gift to an adult and the recipient was in awe over the detail and the intricate paper explosions. The tornado is so cool! Not for young children!! It was one of the best gifts under the tree.
generally good condition.......2007-07-22
except the little bent corners of it.
but the inside, the most important part of this kind of books, was just beautiful, perfect.

Classic Stories revisited.......2007-10-10
Frank Baum is a classic writer that had a beautiful writing style that children should revisit that Grandparents enjoyed. These stories should be available in every library in our country as classic tales. My daughter is reading more and her imagination is in full bloom with this collection of books. The publisher and person responsible for puting this collection together should be applauded!
difficult to read.......2007-08-13
This book is condensed, I mean two pages printed on one page so the lettering is very small and none of the original art work is included. I did not realize when I bought it that the letters would be small. I also thought the original art work would be included. It's not bad if you want to read it with a magnifying glass.
all the books none of the pictures.......2007-06-25
I was wondering how they could fit all 15 oz books into 1 volume. the answer is by having no illustrations, two columns per page, and very small print. I felt like I was reading a text book more than a childrens set of books. it still works for a bedtime story for my son (though he really wants pictures), but for something to keep my son occupied while we ride on the bus it's a bit big to tote around. the story's are as I expected, designed for kids with no really scary parts and super simple plots; dull for a grown up but good for younger kids.
Look For Border's Edition.......2007-04-25
I give this book 5 stars because it is "OZ". I purchased something similar, but much much better from Border's , two years ago. Available from Amazon, look for 'The OZ Chronicles'. Volume 1 and Volume 2 contain all of Baum's Oz books. Green Leather Hardcovers, great size print. Volume 3 contains Baum's other books and stories. Incredible find and value.
The books of OZ.......2007-02-07
Great to have all of the stories included in one book. I don't need to worry about finding all the books to read. Great buy!

Oz is Heaven.......2007-10-04
After many years, I have reread the Wonderful Wizard of Oz and enjoyed it as much as the movie. Having just completed a story that is available on Amazon (Dreality), I find my story to be quite similar an adventure. Mine is not fantasy, but based on what might happen if dreams could propel a person to heaven without them actually dying. Not coincidentally, I often reference "Oz" in comparing it to heaven and have a similar theme of wanting to leave and return back home. So, if you enjoyed "Oz" as a child, perhaps you will give my story, a grown-up version of "Oz" a chance.
A classic .......2007-06-01
The Wizard of Oz ever been the classic read in my Library is a great read as well as viewing the DVD too. Children love to read the classics and this one is quite an imagination soaring to Emerald City. "At sunrise Dorothy and her friends resumed journey to see a beautiful gree glow in the sky when Dorothy said, "That sure be the Emerald city". Then, she rang tha bell and the big gate swung open slowing and there was a large room covered with sparkling emeralds....So goes on. Dorothy and her dog Toto reach to the Land of Oz after the cyclone hit. She along with the others, scarecrow, Munchkins, Tin woodman and the Lion explores and gets the rewards from the Oz. All are happy except Dorothy who wish to return to her home in Kansas. And there comes the winged monkeys with the charm of the Golden cap,who can fly her to her home. Later, Dorothy meets Glinda, an attractive witch who helps her out and she fly home. There is a slight different version I find in the DVD but the book is much a better read and a lot classic teaching in the classroom. Children find the book quite interesting too. L Baum's first published book Wizard of OZ later has 13 sequels of the original story. A hundred years and L Baum's works now appears in Gutenberg Project too. However, Wizard of OZ is a must pick and this book should be taught as a Literature supplement in the classroom. Enjoy.

The Wizard of Oz (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Great book with many hidden meanings.......2007-05-27
In the year 1900, a children's book was published that would forever change the public's perception of how of we examine economic, social, and even political metaphors in society. Author L. Frank Baum, using colorful characters such as a Tin Man, Scarecrow, and one timid, Cowardly Lion, decided to tell a story that would shape a modernized fairy tale inspired from the imagination of a little girl and her dreams of a better life into a mesmerizing and psychedelic spin of action, comedy, and drama.
Interestingly enough, Baum not only made light of generalized comparisons to modern day events of the era and its governing leaders, but also was believed to have hidden references of U.S. monetary currency and its policies of the time. The best example of this would be the Yellow Brick Road that lead character Dorothy finds herself using on her journey back home. The yellow symbolizing gold at a time when most laborers in the western United States were in substantial debt to banks because of deflation caused by the recession of 1880. Since America was operating under a commonly used gold standard, many political leaders at the time believed in the requisition of silver as free coinage. Thus we find another comparison to humble companion the `Tin Man'. Another fact that cannot be overlooked is the notion of Dorothy being saved by her magical slippers, notably made of silver.
Historians may argue for many years to come if Baum's references were truly intentional, or just another facade to focus on while playing Pink Floyd's `Dark Side of the Moon' along side the film (another common legend that lives on to this day). We may never know, since Baum never expanded on the symbolisms cast by this great and utterly timeless classic. Maybe we can just let our imagination decide.
Wondrous and Good!.......2007-05-18
What a wondrous and good adventure is the Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the current 100th anniversary edition is the best to own. So many people have watched the movie and never read the book. The book is truly the best ever and a lot of the fun. If you have never shown the movie to your kids, which may be impossible to have not done so, please wait and read them the book first. L Frank Baum was the first to write a modern fairy tale for children. He wrote the first American Fairy Tale which featured Scarecrows, Men of Tin, china people, and winged monkeys. I have to confess I am a big Oz fan. The Oz series began a trend which continues today as with the Harry Potter Books, the spiderwick chronicles, and many others. OZ began this trend and the Oz books still delight us. Yes the 1939 movie helped to immortalize the book but in the film they say plainly that the book gave nearly 40 years of dedicated followers. The makers of the film clearly saw the book as already a classic and it remains so today.
5th Graders from G.G.......2007-04-30
"The Wizard of Oz" is a book any person of age will love. It is a fantasy that has enjoyable characters and interesting plots. Our group had to read a fantasy book for class, and out of all the fantasy books that we could have chose, we chose The Wizard of Oz. At first it didn't grab us, but as we continued reading the book, it became more interesting. The Wizard of Oz is a great book for anyone who is interested in old style fantasy. In conclusion, the Wizard of Oz is a GREAT BOOK!!!!!!!!

The Emerald City of Oz (Books of Wonder)
ASIN: 0978891422 |
Book Description
Although most children today are introduced to the world of Oz through the classic 1939 movie, L. Frank Baum has been captivating the hearts of the young, and not so young, for over a hundred years. This delightful compilation includes all fifteen books written by L. Frank Baum: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Marvelous Land of Oz, Ozma of Oz, Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, The Road to Oz, The Emerald City of Oz, The Patchwork Girl Of Oz, Little Wizard Stories of Oz, Tik-Tok of Oz, The Scarecrow Of Oz, Rinkitink In Oz, The Lost Princess Of Oz, The Tin Woodman Of Oz, The Magic of Oz, and Glinda Of Oz. Perhaps there is no better, or fitting, introduction one could give to this compilation than the author's note that Baum himself writes in his very first book, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Here he reveals the true intention of his work. Folklore, legends, myths and fairy tales have followed childhood through the ages, for every healthy youngster has a wholesome and instinctive love for stories fantastic, marvelous and manifestly unreal. The winged fairies of Grimm and Andersen have brought more happiness to childish hearts than all other human creations. Yet the old time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as "historical" in the children's library; for the time has come for a series of newer "wonder tales" in which the stereotyped genie, dwarf and fairy are eliminated, together with all the horrible and blood-curdling incidents devised by their authors to point a fearsome moral to each tale. Modern education includes morality; therefore the modern child seeks only entertainment in its wonder tales and gladly dispenses with all disagreeable incident. Having this thought in mind, the story of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was written solely to please children of today. It aspires to being a modernized fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heartaches and nightmares are left out.

What a book!.......2007-05-07
For those who love the Wizard of Oz there's nothing quite like having the complete set of related stories. My kids and I are reading and re-reading, carry the book with us on vacations and keep it on the bedside table at home. Wonderful gift for children (and adults) of all ages!
Stories Great, Edition Not.......2007-04-13
I honestly cannot understand giving any Oz story a rating of one because of the content. These stories are classic. I AM giving this edition a one, though, because this is probably the poorest excuse for a book that I have ever seen.
My first and biggest issue with this edition is the fact that the editor/publisher chose not to have paragraph breaks. Each chapter is a paragraph. It's terrible. Next, as these pages are large (almost as big as a typical textbook), you would expect columns to be used. Not the case. It's just one long line after one long line on the pages. The publisher did not even choose to put the next chapter on a fresh page, merely spacing once and beginning anew. It's extremely frustrating.
The next thing that finally make me close the book was the abundance of errors in the text. I honestly do not think this is L. Frank Baum's fault. I feel these errors are there because the editor and publishers were so intent on putting this on the market that they overlooked important things. Mostly, I am referring to technical and mechanical errors, but a few sentences don't even make sense. And, the thing I just REALLY couldn't get over was the fact that all of the chapter titles are in capital letters, and then randomly there was a title with lowercase letters! Such inattention to a book is unacceptable to me. I AM returning this book and getting a nicer edition!
By the way, I did try to contact the publishing company about this, but its Web site is not properly functioning.
A very dated children's fantasy.......2007-04-08
Nowadays, with the popularity of Harry Potter, there has been something of a re-examination of children's literature, in particular, the idea that it can't also be enjoyable for adults to read. Even older works, such as The Chronicles of Narnia have been reappreciated. It was along these lines that I decided to read L. Frank Baum's Oz books, figuring that, if nothing else, they would be a quick read. In addition, I felt I would get a better understanding of Gregory Maguire's Oz books (Wicked and Son of a Witch), which are much more based on Baum than any movie. After reading all fifteen "books" that comprise The Complete Oz, I have to say, I'm a little disappointed.
Like most people, my exposure to Baum's works was limited to the fantastic adaptation of his first Oz book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, featuring Judy Garland. The cinematic adaptation only loosely follows the story, and there are many things that do not appear in the movie. Most importantly, while the movie pretty much explains the whole adventure as a dream, the book makes the land of Oz quite real; subsequent stories has Dorothy shifting back-and-forth from Kansas to Oz until several books in when she moves there permanently with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry (and Toto).
Although the characters change from story to story, the main characters are Dorothy and Ozma, the ruler of Oz. There are a number of other recurring characters, including the familiar Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, Wizard and Glinda the Good Witch, along with others like Tik Tok, Jack Pumpkinhead and the Shaggy Man. Each story typically has the characters exploring a new and strange land where they must solve some problem. Occasionally, the Emerald City of Oz is threatened by invaders, who are typically repulsed with great ease. Only the Nome King appears as an enemy in several books.
The problem with the Oz books is that, as imaginative as they are, they are not all that well-written. I realize I am applying an adult reader's scrutiny to stories designed for pre-teens, but I think only the youngest of readers would not see through Baum's plot holes and last-minute rescues. A standard Oz story would have certain characters in dire straits only to be rescued by Glinda or Ozma, who happen to be watching everything through a magic mirror. Everything is perfect in Oz...too perfect to create anything but the weakest form of danger. And I think even most young readers nowadays would find Baum's sugary language too cloying to be palatable. I suppose one hundred years ago, this may have fit with contemporary tastes, but there is just a lot out there that's better nowadays.
The Complete Oz is over 700 pages, but each page contains at least twice as much text as the page in a normal book. What the volume contains are only the fifteen stories: no illustrations or background material accompanies the text, which means that this massive volume is unlikely to even appeal to the only readers who might be able to enjoy it. Under some circumstances, I might even give this book two stars; I know, however, that I am not truly the target audience, so I am giving it an extra star to make up for that. Nonetheless, even if you feel that these might be good stories for children you know (and it is certainly G-rated stuff), you are better off buying these stories in a more kid-friendly format.
An Magnificient Compilation.......2007-02-14
I have been searching for a volume that contains all of the Oz stories, and this one is the "keeper". The editor did a great job with his type setting, making the stories more clear, and overall presentation of these classics. It's a great value at an honest price. I continue to recommend it to my friends and family.
I've never read anything so bad!.......2007-02-06
The stories in this book, and most everything I've been forced to read from this author, are extremely bad. They are the most shallow stories Ive ever read! There is no character depth, the landscapes are ill defined and unbelievable, the stories are so repetative there's no point in reading more than one (and why would you want to anyway!) and the story is so underdeveloped that the characters simply state what they are doing and thinking all the time! Besides that, the wonderful imagination I was lead to believe is displayed in these books is missing, as 9/10 of his characters are characters obviously based on the works of other great fiction/fantasy writers and myths/legends of various regions. The only things moderately inventive are the mechanical men, a fascination he takes too far in having at least one such character in all his books!

Made for older toddlers.......2006-02-01
I did not realize this coloring book would have as much written text in it as it did. I bought it for my nephew's 3rd birthday, and it was somewhat advanced for him.
Wonderful abridged story.......2002-12-14
Much more than a coloring book, this is a wonderfully abridged edition of The Wizard of Oz with the terrific original illustrations. Great for reading aloud to younger kids. And I enjoy coloring the picture myself. I also recommend the Alice in Wonderland coloring book by the same publisher - my three-year-old will sit and listen to all 40-plus pages! An excellent product at a great price.
HOW FUN!.......2001-06-11
I spent my whole spring break coloring the pretty pictures, and my mommy ended up throwing the book away, but its cool, because I am gonna get another one!

For many of us, the adventures of Dorothy in Oz will forever be associated not with Judy Garland singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" but with W. W. Denslow's exceedingly odd line drawings for the original editions of Baum's Oz series. The Viennese artist Lisbeth Zwerger, however, goes a long way toward providing a new and refreshed set of images for the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the humbug wizard. These illustrations are often cockeyed, with occasional realistic details thrown in, like a crow with a corncob in its beak in the first portrait of the Scarecrow. The characters have a poignance and oddity that escaped the makers of the Oz movie.
Book Description
`The road to the City of Emeralds is paved with yellow brick,' said the Witch; `so you cannot miss it. When you get to Oz do not be afraid of him, but tell your story and ask him to help you.' A cyclone hits Kansas and whirls away Dorothy and her little dog Toto to the magical Land of Oz, where wild beasts talk, silver shoes have magic powers, and good witches offer protection with a kiss. But Dorothy has made an enemy of the Wicked Witch of the West. With her new friends the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion, they brave many dangers in search of the Wonderful Wizard in his Emerald City at the heart of Oz to ask him to grant each of them what they most desire - only to find that they already possess it. Published at the dawn of the twentieth century, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) immediately captivated child and adult readers alike. This new edition includes many of W. W. Denslow's original illustrations, and the introduction considers both the famous MGM film version and recent literary theory in a fascinating discussion of this children's classic.

There's no place like home.......2007-04-12
I read this book recently after reading Maguire's Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. I was very familiar with the movie The Wizard of Oz (Two-Disc Special Edition) but had never got around to reading the book, and I have to say, I really enjoyed it.
Read it by yourself or with your child, you will be surprised how different it is from the movie we all know.

THE WIZARD OF OZ
The Wizard of Oz is about a girl, Dorothy, who's house was carried up in a cyclone with her and her dog Toto still in it. It turns out she landed in the Land of Oz. She meets some munchkins and a nice witch who tells her to go down the yellow brick road to meet the Great Oz who can get her back to Kansas where she lives. On her journey, she meets bad creatures, and friends who also need to get to Oz. They have some difficulties along the way. Will Dorothy ever get back to Kansas to meet her Aunt Em again?
This book has a clear message that you should keep trying, even if it's hard. Dorothy and her friends keep trying to get to Oz and anywhere else they need to be, even though the challenge is difficult.
This is a great fairy tale. I loved this book! So if you're looking for an exciting fairy tale, read The Wizard Of Oz!
A "not so" wonderful wizard of Oz.......2007-01-08
The reason I read this book was because of all the high praise I hear about it. Don't get me wrong the book was wonderfully written for a 5 year old. There were some parts I enjoyed but most parts left me bored and wondering when it will end. Most of you have seen the movie, some of you have seen it many many times. What i'm getting at here is that book was actully worse than the movie. The book has a bunch of different and wierd parts that the movie didn't have. After awhile dorothy get annoying when see keeps complaining that see wants to go home and she seems not to care about anyone exept for her dog toto.
To any child or,parent looking for a book for a child, this book is for you. But to the teenagers and adults that don't enjoy children's books, this book isn't for you. It may seem that i've been harsh on the book but there is some good parts too. Its also a classic so it wouldn't hurt to read this book.
