5 out of 5 stars Someone needs to get an afterlife.......2007-06-08

This is the first book you will need to get out of a powerless Christian rut. The churches that are emptying out in the 21st century are due in part to this type of powerless review mentioned by Mr. Ingle. Myles Munroe is spot on in this writing. Read then do. You can't evaluate this book by reading and judging if it was entertaining or inspirational without taking on the challenge of dominon on this earth. If you do not take dominion you will be dominated by sickness, poverty, lack, and death. Tell your brain to shut up and read and do. Then decide if the results are worth the read. (RED) "Everything belongs to me now I give it to you."

We have to thank Mr. Roy Ingle's review for starting out with a review of some other book than what is listed then preaching his doctrine for the rest of the review. Since preaching is an open for this book review I will mention the following to counter. It is miracles, healings and the power of the believer that is the dinner bell to the world's salvation. Jesus and Paul both preached with sign and wonders following and Jesus said we would do more and be at least, like Him.

Two small examples of your Authority are John 15:7 (RED) If you abide in me and my Words abide in you, ask what you want of me and I will give it to you.

And Exodus 14:15 (God) Why are you praying to me to do something? Reach out your staff and part the waters.

I will preach this however, those who have never taken authority can't say you can't take authority. The optimist believes this is true and the pessimist fears the optimist is correct. In doubt? Read this:

This is the first of Miles Monroe's books I've read (and most likely the last). He is an awesome speaker and teacher, but I found his written work to be unnecessarily wordy as a result of it being overly repetitive (and not necessarily in a clarifying way)--a format that works when teaching, but not when writing as the reader can easily go back and re-read a missed point. So needless to say, I never made it through the book--though I did give it a few good shots!

Book Description

In this masterful, stylish, and authoritative book, Michael Burleigh gives us an epic history of the battles over religion in modern Europe, examining the complex and often lethal ways in which politics and religion have interacted and influenced each other over the last two centuries. From the French Revolution to the totalitarian movements of the twentieth century, Earthly Powers is a uniquely powerful portrait of one of the great tensions of modern history—one that continues to be played out on the world stage today.

5 out of 5 stars deep insight into how people are motivated in politics as well as religion.......2007-07-28

This is a broad look into what may appear today to be minor movements and personalities. these characters created the necessary structures for the better known historical figures to emerge. The 'religious' character of these utopean merchants is remarkable even when the solutions they envisioned were brutally inhuman. This book provides us with a deeper understanding of the conflicts of the current age between secularism and religion in its organised form.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant read.......2007-04-16

This is one of the most brilliant explications of the contrast and conflict between religion and politics in Europe from 1800 to the early 20th century. The authro delves deep into the underlying values of Europe in the 19th century as secularism swept the continent and unleashed terrible things. This is groundbreaking research that explains, finally, the interplay between Darwining, biblical criticism and the way in which religion and secularism lead to both violence and peace. The French revolution was the ultimate secular crusade the war of 1914 marked the end of that period of secularization and the advent of the communist and fascist period that would arrive after 1922.

A very interesting and grounbbreaking study. Easily readable, and brilliantly laid out, the argument is only half developed for this is part of a larger study, but this portion is the strongest.

4 out of 5 stars What One Expects From Burleigh: Excellence.......2007-04-13

Michael Burleigh is one of the best historians around, as he's amply demonstrated in book after book. "Earthly Powers" is no exception to the rule. His theme in this book (which he continues to explore, even more successfully, in "Sacred Causes") is the clash between political and religious powers-that-be from the French Revolution to World War I, and the consequences of this clash for Europe and its citizenry. And it's impossible, as intended, not to gain and improve understanding of the West's calamitous current state as a result of religion (Catholicism in particular) being ultimately on the losing side of "disagreements" with secularism.

A couple of criticisms: Mr. Burleigh's linear approach (which, overall, I approve of) is a bit flat. He's highly descriptive, to be sure, but somewhat at the cost of analysis. Let the reader infer and extrapolate on his own, by all means, but a little more analysis from a top-drawer historian (Mr. Burleigh in this case) is always welcome. Also, while Mr. Burleigh is an excellent and elegant writer, he sometimes gets carried away by his own unquestionably rich vocabulary -- e.g., "We need not tarry over [Bertrand] Russell's historically jejune ratiocinations." No doubt. I mean, huh? And that's only on the third page! This is not to imply that Mr. Burleigh's writing is inaccessible. It is indeed accessible -- though perhaps not quite as accessible as one would like.

Still, "Earthly Powers" is a very good read -- it will hold your interest and provoke thought -- and I heartily recommend it (and its lack of ratiocinations).

4 out of 5 stars A Fine History of Europe's 19th Century Religious-Political Relationships Of Relevance To Today.......2006-12-31

Distinguished British historian Michael Burleigh began thinking of the history of Europe's relations between its religious and political components of civil society and the governments of emerging nation-states such as Italy and Germany while writing his classic histories on Nazi Germany. Seen via this light, his latest book, "Earthly Powers: The Clash of Religion and Politics in Europe from the French Revolution to the Great War", demonstrates how European society developed such evil 20th Century state religions of Communism, Fascism, and Nazism. He makes a most persuasive case in demonstrating that Revolutionary France, especially during the period of the Directory, was the precursor to such banal, evil state-sponsored faiths, replacing traditional Catholic doctrine and rituals with those proposed by the radical ruling elite of the first French republic. And he demonstrates how the clash of Protestant and Catholic religious traditions in Central Europe spurred efforts to create not only a modern unified German state, but also encouraged the successful unification of the Italian peninsula by revolutionaries like Giuseppe Garibaldi, with substantial assistance from the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia's astute ministers such as Camille Benso, conte Cavour, and its ruling family (This dynasty would eventually become the rulers of a unified Italian kingdom.), inspite of substantial opposition from the Catholic Church and its Popes ruling from Rome. Paradoxically, Burleigh notes how the ascendancy of strong religious traditions in German politics also fueled both Imperial Germany's global imperial ambitions, and the militarism which led directly to World War I. Although his prose is often uneven, Burleigh has made many useful observations about the relationships between 19th Century European religions and politics that have much relevance to today's current clash against Islamofascist terror.

4 out of 5 stars Relevant to today.......2006-11-04

This book gives some insight into how we got to today's political and religious scene. You can even make some parallels showing that we really are not much diffenent that we were 150 to 200 years ago.

I do wish that Mr. Burleigh had a more journalist style rather than a scholarly style or writing. His long sentences and paragraphs make for slow reading.

My Bible study group picked this book in order to learn more about prayer. After a few chapters it bacame obvious that Mr. Monroe is NOT an authority on the subject. His basic premise is that God is unable to directly influence events on earth without being asked to intervene by a human. If you know God's word, you know that's not truth.

Thank you so much Myles Munroe for writing this book. It has opened my eyes to so much about prayer that I didn't realize but when you study the Bible it really is true! Since I read your book a few months ago I have put what I've learned into practice and I have already experienced many answers to prayer!!! Knowing and believing God's promises and putting them into action is so much more understandable and easier for me now. You have really been used by the Lord to bless everyone who reads this wonderful book. Thank you ever so much again.

    Book Description

First published in 1999, this celebrated history of San Francisco traces the exploitation of both local and distant regions by prominent families--the Hearsts, de Youngs, Spreckelses, and others--who gained power through mining, ranching, water and energy, transportation, real estate, weapons, and the mass media. The story uncovered by Gray Brechin is one of greed and ambition on an epic scale. Brechin arrives at a new way of understanding urban history as he traces the connections between environment, economy, and technology and discovers links that led, ultimately, to the creation of the atomic bomb and the nuclear arms race. In a new preface, Brechin considers the vulnerability of cities in the post-9/11 twenty-first century.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mining interests and San Francisco.......2007-03-26

Brechin begins with an overview of the social and political environment that evolves around historic mining operations, then applies the historic pattern to San Francisco's gold rush. This very readable volumn highlights the interactions between San Francisco's movers and shakers, explaining in the process why these individuals had buildings, parks and streets named after them. Imperial San Francisco paints a good picture of the opportunities the city's founders embraced and some of the consequences of their actions.

4 out of 5 stars Imperial San Francisco.......2007-01-28

    Perfect in fact.
My general remark is that the cost of sending the item is very high in relation to the original price of the book. I realise that this could be difficult to change, but this makes that I will only consider an order to Amazon whem I see no otrer way to buy a book othertwise.

4 out of 5 stars Timely reminder of war's cost.......2005-10-24

Gray Brechin tells us about the short Spanish-American War and the long, bloody Philippine-American War that followed. When Gulf War II went fast and well, and the occupation went awry, and comparisons were made to the Vietnam War, I thought Brechin's observations to be much closer to the mark. Too bad its lessons were missed by almost everyone.

5 out of 5 stars POWERFUL, ENTERTAINING HISTORICAL NARRATIVE.......2005-07-03

I am long overdue in giving praise, and thanks, to Gray Brechin for writing one of the definitive and most unique historical treatises on the incomparable and often barbaric history of California, San Francisco, and the American West. He opens with an examination of urban-centric empires, particularly Rome and London, and shows how the process repeated and accelerated in California, due to the unprecedented economic boom triggered by Gold Rush, Silver Boom, the "green gold" agricultural explosion, real estate, ship building and military hardware. His portraits of the ruthless visionaries/profiteers like California's Big Four and Comstock Load barons gives a historical and cultural understanding of how the West became a major economic and political engine that helped transform America into the lumbering financial juggernaut it is today. Brechin dissects the phenomenon of faux wealth perfectly: explaining how hundreds of millions of dollars invested in Gold Mining stocks fueled the Western boom and expansion, investments that were several times greater than the actual amount of gold taken from the land. He dissects the financial "pyramid" that he attributes to mining: how elevator shafts that went down into the grown soon becamse elevator shafts that moved people up into the heavens in high rise buildings, transforming the brief gold mining bonanza into the real estate phenomenon that continues in California to this day. It a truly fresh, original, eye-opening and flawlessly documented observation. And Brechin is not shy about showing the human and environmental costs: the deforestation of the entire Lake Tahoe Basin, the astonishing wastelands created by high pressure water mining for silver in the High Sierra. This is mesmerizing, wonderfully written, a reflective and predictive tale, told as deftly and poignantly as any California history I have ever read, and I have read many. This book should take its place alongside Walter Bean's "Abe Ruef's San Francisco", Marc Reisner's "Dangerous California" and Gladys Hansen's "Denial of Disaster" as a pivotal tome on where we started and where we are headed in America and particularly the American West. James Dalessandro, author, 1906.

3 out of 5 stars Shrill and Often Obvious,,, But Interesting Anyways.......2003-08-28

OK, OK, I get the point: elites manipulate the physical world for their own enrichment and then disguise their machinations by comprimising the media. So what else is new?

One complaint that has already been voiced about this book is that it is not reall "about" San Francisco at all, but rather makes a point about all cities. That complaint is true in that author's theoretical underpinings for his argument extend to examples outside of San Francisco. Really though, what else would the author do?

Personally, I found authors attempt to relate San Francisco to Rome and other cities to be interesting and relevant.

Another complaint voiced in these reviews is authors tone. That tone has been described as "shrill". I would have to concur with that complaint. I found the tone of this book to be distracting. I would venture to guess that anyone, ANYONE who reads this book is likely amenable to his "Cities suck" thesis. To belabor the point in the manner that author does is just beating a dead horse.

In defense of author, he doesn't present himself as a true "academic" but as a sort of journalist/academic cross-trainer. I found that perspective refreshing. Author is impassioned about the subject of book in a way that makes you put up with the occasional hectoring and shrillness.

One fundamental problem I had with the substance, rather then the style of the book: Author repeatedly discusses various civic improvement schemes as plots to "increase real estate values". Query: Is that really such a nefarious scheme? If you look at California today, property ownership is hardly the exclusive province of the elite. In this way, I think the book unwittingly lends supports to an alternative, and contradictory hypotheses: That the actions that economic elites take in their own self interest ultimately benefit those outside their own social class.

So, that's something to think about.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-09-08

The only knowledge I'd had of Burgess was through his novel "A Clockwork Orange," which I loved, so when I saw "Earthly Powers" at the bookstore over twenty years ago, I bought it, hoping that it would have the same flavor. Wrong! I couldn't get into it at that time, a story of an aged homosexual and his relationship with a priest who becomes the pope, it seemed boring to me so I set it aside until 2007. I'm glad I did, because now I feel mature enough to absorb and understand a lot of what Mr. Burgess had to say in this novel and thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is an epic of a novel, chronicling the dual lives of the protagonist, the writer Kenneth Toomey, and his brother-in-law's brother, Carlo Campanati, an Italian priest who eventually becomes pope. The book spans several decades and touches on deep philosophical issues of religion, homosexuality, fascism, and more. I thought the characters were richly drawn, and the way Burgess weaves the character's family together over the decades is masterful. I love the way Burgess uses a repetition of symbols or themes throughout the book: greedy eating, being victimized, the loutishness of youth, etc. It created an extra element of depth that kept me enthralled throughout the whole novel. It's very readable and Burgess's portrayal of homosexuality seemed very accurate to me.

I was a little bit put off by a lot of the philosophizing over religion, but I think it all tied together at the remarkable ending. To me, this book was about non-belief and how living without a "belief system" can be me more moral and loving than tying oneself to a dogmatic faith that can ultimately lead to corruption.

4 out of 5 stars The 20th century as seen by Burgess.......2007-03-01

I chose Earthly Powers as my introduction to Anthony Burgess only because I found this novel on my parent's bookshelf. Little did I know that this book was considered by many to be Burgess' pinnacle novel in the form of fiction. Published in 1980, Earthly Powers is a novel which basically outlines the historical situation of western society in the early half of the 20th century and although most of the characters in the novel are fictitious, a lot are based upon real-life people.

Earthly Powers heavily discusses the impact and reaction of homosexuality in society during these years. There is serious discussion upon the development and political stances of the Catholic Church and also how these positions affected people. This religious theme was contrasted with further contemplation upon the development of atheism in the heavily catholic families of France and Italy. Burgess also slips in a lot of his own opinions on some of the 20th century's greatest literary figures such as James Joyce, Rudyard Kipling and H.G. Wells and how and why these men were raised into sublimity.

The only quality this novel displays which many people might find a hindrance is the heavy use of pretentious vocabulary. There was extensive use of words of which I had no understanding of and had never seen used and although this is good in moderation, when used excessively it becomes quite a disturbance for some people. I would definitely recommend those who decide to read this novel to have a good quality dictionary nearby.

To finalize I would state that this book portrays a very original and educational approach to societal development during these seminal years of modern culture and I would recommend this novel to most people who have an open mind about such matters.

    3 out of 5 stars enjoyable overeach.......2006-06-02

Ijust finished EARTHLY POWERS and I enjoyed it.It's intelligent and very readible.Burgess displays a sophistication coupled with eruidition that is a pleasure to encounter.I suspect he must have been a great conversationalist. However, one should not let the pleasure one might derive from the sound of Burgess' voice obscure the fact that for all it's size this is not a very substantive novel.Burgess creates a panorama of the 20th century with a particular focus on the Catholic Church.Surprisingly he has little to say of interest about the century or the church .He's also ,at best,a little muddled at points.Even more striking is the weakness of most of the characters. The main character and narrator, ken toomey is carefully drawn and compelling. The same can not be said for the other characters. They are contrivances of the author.Burgess trots them out so they can say or do something he wants said or done. They don't live off the page. Also Burgess has little feel for the U.S.His Americans don't"work".One minor character ann(toomeys niece)is completly botched.Unfotunately Burgess decides he has something to tell us about jim jones. He should have left this topic to Shiva Naipul.I'm being quite hard on a book I liked and would recomend but I think I'm right to do so.Burgess shows admirable ambition here.He simply doesn't pull off the assignment he gave himself.

    5 out of 5 stars Serious comedy.......2006-03-03

Burgess's best novel. Food for the gods: watch as Toomey's memory exfoliates in hideous comedy through the demented twentieth century. Love, music, movies, linguistics, James Joyce, Nazis, Dante, & Shakespeare. An incredible cast.

5 out of 5 stars Mexico, Winter 1984-85 - Burgess or Garcia Marquez?.......2005-12-12

Just after graduating with my degree in English, I traveled to southern Baja with 16 cents in my pocket. I camped for three months on an isolated beach with a few friends. The nearest store sold only graphic novels en Espanol, or what we then called comic books. I had been reading "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and was getting fed up with it, every character having the same name (okay a bit of an exagerration, but not much), when a friend gave Earthly Powers to me. I felt as if I had been stranded in the desert and was handed a glass of ice-cold water. I loved the book. It is one of my all time favorites. I read it again about 10 years later and was just as absorbed by it.

    Book Description

Songs in the Night book 3, the sequel to the award-winning His Watchful Eye. Following World War II, little has changed in Berlin. The Swastika has been replaced by the Hammer and Sickle, the soldiers by secret police, but a life of daily oppression and fear remains. Inspired by the memory of Joseph Schumacher, his widow forms a contentious coalition to sneak six disabled young people over the Berlin Wall, out of Communist East Germany, and on to either freedom or capture.

    5 out of 5 stars A Heart Wrenching Story!.......2004-09-07

Even though World War II has come to an end, little has changed in Berlin. While the Swastika has been replaced by the Hammer and Sickle, and soldiers by secret police, life of oppression and fear remains.

When Mady Schumacher learns of the location of the six disabled orphans her now deceased husband, Josef, had cared for, Mady and a long-time friend, Konlon, dream up an elaborate plan to break the kids out of the mental institution they have been placed in. After they rescue the children, they hope to smuggle them over the Berlin Wall and eventually take them to America. Unfortunately, before they can even get the kids out the institution, things start to go wrong. Will what follows be a blessing or a curse?

ABOVE ALL EARTHLY POWERS is a heart wrenching story about the struggles which residents of East Berlin faced behind the Berlin Wall. The characters in the story are very well developed, instantly drawing the reader in. You become acquainted and fall in love with blind `Tomcat' and follow him around as he is able to escape the mental institution and find his friends, tell them where he and the other five have been hidden, and then his return back to the institution to wait for `the rescue'.

Even though ABOVE ALL EARTHLY POWERS is book three in the Songs of the Night series, it easily stands alone. Readers might want to pick up the first two books While Mortals Sleep and His Watchful Eye just to find out what happened prior to this story though. While the Berlin Wall was in existence since before I was born, I do remember the day it came down. In Grand Rapids, Michigan, they have a portion of the wall on display, and it was awesome to be able to touch a huge piece of history like that. Having experienced the sheer magnitude of the `small piece' of the wall that the museum had, it had to be a daunting job to dream up escape attempts and then try to carry them out with armed guards ready to shoot without warning.

1 out of 5 stars It is a fantastic book, written in an action-packed way........1998-07-15

Dick Sutphen is an excellent author, and this book is another one of his successes. Throghout the years I have read all his books, and have followed his career and teachings. He truly knows how to fulfill his mission in this lifetime. Earthly Purposes is a book written in such a way that the reader does not want to stop reading it. It relives perfectly well the historical era of the time, and the reader feels like part of the action. I recommend it wholeheartedly, as well as his other books.
