Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars More swashbuckling action, adventure and romance .......2007-09-13

In book 2 in "The Legacy of the King's Pirates" series, Charlisse and Edmund are enjoying married life, and they are expecting their first child. Unfortunate circumstances separate the young lovers, and lead Edmund to believe that his bride is dead. To drown his sorrows, he turns his back on God and the painful memories of his wife, takes up his bottle of rum and seeks to pillage and plunder like he did prior to meeting Christ. Meanwhile, the captured Charlisse tirelessly strives to be reunited with her husband. But by the time Edmund and Charlisse meet again, will Edmund have gone too far to be reconciled to his lady love.

This is a wonderful adventure story. The action is nearly non-stop. I was completely impressed with how the author brought to light the craftiness of the enemy to use self-doubt to keep us from being all that we can be through Jesus. M.L. Tyndall's characters model traits that I would like to possess - tenacity, a capacity for forgiveness, humility, grace and faith under pressure. You cannot put this book down, so start it very early on a Saturday morning and clear your schedule for the day!

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait fo the next one!.......2007-07-06

I read ML Tyndall's first book, The Redemption, as soon as it came out. I could not put it down. I didn't think the author could write a second book as wonderful, but I was so wrong! The Reliance was even better than the first one...if that was even possible. ML Tyndall has carried on the characters qualities and personalities to the point where I feel I have known Charlesse and Merrick like old friends. This author's writing is such high quality that I have tried to read 2 other books since finishing The Reliance, and I have put then away. After reading her books, nothing else compares. I simply cannot wait till the Restitution comes out. Thank you ML Tyndal for giving us readers something different and unique....its about time someone comes up with something out of the ordinary!

5 out of 5 stars Piracy Is Alive and Well and Romance Too.......2007-05-30

MaryLu Tyndall has outdone herself with book 2 of the Legacy of the King's Pirates series. This Caribbean adventure will have you longing to ride the waves with them.
Captain Edmund Merrick and his lovely wife, Charlisse, arrive in Porto Bello, Panama for a much needed time of vacation alone with each other. The solace of their retreat ends when the town is attacked by Captain Morgan and his pirates. As they try to escape, they come upon an orphanage under siege and Charlisse's kind heart will not let her leave without helping the children. She insists upon staying with them while Edmund gets help. As he rides away the orphanage explodes into flames. No one survives.
Captain Merrick, believing his wife and unborn child are lost forever has one thing left to him, revenge upon the pirate who took his future away. He turns away from his God and back to his rum and his old pirate ways.
Charlisse was not killed in the blast. Captain Kent, a long time rival, staged the event so that he could capture her in revenge for what he believes Edmund did to him. Charlisse finds herself, once again, imprisoned by Kent Carlton. On his ship she meets Lady Isabel Ashton, whom he has captured and ravaged. The women become friends and comrades.
Storms and attacks, fears and doubts, faith and despair, all form tempests that threaten to destroy both Charlisse and Edmund. Will Edmund find his way back to faith and trust in God before he destroys himself? Will Charlisse be able to ho0ld onto her love for Edmund when she loses everything else? Will she allow her faith to grow stronger through trials?
If you want a slow read, move on. This book is non-stop action, intrigue and frustration as the readers wants to yell at Charlisse to hang on and smack Edmund back to himself. MaryLu definitely understands the fascination we have with pirates and has the gift of bringing faith and hope into the stories too.

4 out of 5 stars Another action packed, thought provoking adventure on the high seas.......2007-05-28

MaryLu Tyndall's sequel to The Redemption is another action packed, thought provoking adventure on the high seas. Not only do you find the thrills of sword fights and pirate raids, but you experience the fears, hopes, doubts and faith of the characters. As with the first book in this series, MaryLu expertly weaves a spiritual thread through this story this time asking the question "When all else that you have is stripped away, do you have the faith to trust in God?" As various characters grapple with this question you may be surprised at their answers. If you enjoyed The Redemption then batten down the hatches and prepare to set sail on another adventure on the high seas with The Reliance.

3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars.......2007-05-21

Having just finished reading The Redemption, The Reliance reads as only an okay sequel. There is plenty of action, adventure, intrigue, and drama but I felt aggravated throughout pretty much the whole book. Why? Well, in the Redemption you get to know Charlisse and Merrick. Sigh. You fall in love with Merrick right along with Charlisse. But in the Reliance I found Merrick's character to be cowardly, capricious, hypocritical, weak, and stupid. One of the main attractions to his character in the Redemption was his strong faith in the face of evil and his hopeful optimism even facing death. Here, he doesn't even check the site where Charlisse is believed to have been found dead. He pretty much immediately falls back into his old, before-Christ pirating. Both Merrick and Charlisse hear voices of good and of evil- which initially is an interesting twist but it's used too much, making this story preachier than the first.

My main complaint is that I really didn't like Merrick. He returns too quickly and easily to his old habits- joining up with an evil pirate to avenge Charlisse's "death". He practically starts falling in love with another woman and when he finds that Charlisse is still alive, he has the audacity and gall to think that she has no right to not welcome him with open arms?!? Argh. Charlisse, on the other hand, is much more likeable. She shows such strength, courage, faith, and bravery. She captains a ship of bloody pirates! Pretty amazing compared to how she was in the Redemption. But her change is believable; she had to fight to survive and her faith/reliance on God gave her strength in the face of any adversity.

Even though the plot is action packed, the storyline offers nothing really new or original. Husband thinks wife is dead, goes on revenge kick, wife is really alive, and there are many instances where they pass each other by. That idea is nothing new. The plot points were predictable; you know that they can't find each other right away- the story would be over too soon.

Maybe if you spread out the reading of the two stories you wouldn't notice or be bothered by the change in Merrick's character. Reading one after the other, they don't really match up. The Redemption reads as much more exciting, riveting story. Even though the Restitution focuses on Kent and Isabel, I hope the story line is better than the Reliance. (Though Kent is another character who seems different/changed- in the Redemption, he comes off as a heartless, cunning rogue bent on revenge and in the Reliance he still is evil but we see some good in him. He comes to love Isabel. Maybe his change will be believable...)

    Book Description

Towards the end of the sixteenth century, King Philip, ruler of the conjoint global empires of Spain and Portugal, received advice from many quarters, not least with regard to the attacks on the empires by other west European nations. Manoel de Andrada Castel Blanco, an obscure cleric who had worked in Brazil and Africa and who lamented the marine disasters and enemy incursions of the previous half-century, wrote c.1590 a tract of advice which has remained unpublished until the present annotated edition. His proposals for the defense of the imperial sea routes, which include references to localities as far apart as Bahia, Aden, Siam and Magellan Strait, make him one of the earliest global strategists. The tract, despite its patent defects of thought and presentation, gives the reader something of the "feel" of the period as it was experienced by those Iberians who, although outside the imperial administration, were capable of grasping the intense excitement of novel global venture and the inevitable accompanying anxieties and alarms.

    Book Description

In a page-turning tale brimming with adventure, author Richard Sanders tells of the remarkable exploits of Bartholomew Roberts (better known as Black Bart), the greatest of the Caribbean pirates.

He drank tea instead of rum. He banned women and gambling on his ships. He never made his prisoners walk the plank, instead inviting them into his cabin for a friendly chat. And during the course of his extraordinary two-and-a-half-year career as a pirate captain, he captured four hundred prizes and brought trade in the eastern Caribbean to a standstill. In If a Pirate I Must Be..., Richard Sanders tells the larger-than-life story of Bartholomew Roberts, aka Black Bart. Born in a rural town, Roberts rose from third mate on a slave ship to pirate captain in a matter of months. Before long, his combination of audaciousness and cunning won him fame and fortune from the fisheries of Newfoundland to the slave ports of West Africa. Sanders brings to life a fascinating world of theater and ritual, where men (a third of whom were black) lived a close-knit, egalitarian life, democratically electing their officers and sharing their spoils. They were highly (if surreptitiously) popular with many merchants, with whom they struck incredibly lucrative deals. Yet with a fierce team of Royal Navy pirate hunters tracking his every move, Roberts’ heyday would prove a brief one, and with his capture, the Golden Age of pirates would pass into the lore and legend of books and movies. Based on historical records, journals and letters from pirates under Roberts’ command, and on writings by Roberts himself, If a Pirate I Must Be... is the true story of the greatest pirate ever to sail the Caribbean.

    5 out of 5 stars A brilliant tale.......2007-08-12

In this well written and brilliantly told tale the exploits of `Black Bart' Bartholomew Roberts are told amidst the history of the early 18th century. This is much more than a pirate story. This is stories a vast array of characters and places from Newfoundland to the coast of Africa and Devil's islands. In his time Black Bart was one of the most feared pirates, but not as famous as Blackbeard. He was born in Wales in 1682 and began his career as a pirate in 1719 after having worked as a third mate on a merchant vessel. In the fall and winter of 1719 he made his way as a pirate captain to Brazil and then to the Caribbean, suffering a mutiny and losing a ship in the process. By 1720 he had regained his power and moved to Newfoundland, raiding shipping along the way. From September 1720 to April 1721 he became the scourge of the British and French Caribbean. 1722 found him and a much enlarged crew off the coast of Africa, where he had originally become a pirate.
In truth his career only spanned three years, but it is a story that is far richer than those mere three years. This book is a short history of so many things, from sickness in Britain's slave-colonies of Africa, to Devil's island, to the emergence of white settlement in the Caribbean. Many astounding stories and mini-histories can be found in this volume, from stories of utopias among brigands, to the vanishing Caribs of the Caribbean, the use of slaves aboard Pirate vessels, and the rampant homosexuality and promiscuity among men and pirates in the period. One small oversight is the lack of a map.

A brilliantly told story, if most history were written like this than it would all rival fiction in the stories that would be told.

5 out of 5 stars Breaks the Hollywood Stereotypes of Pirates.......2007-08-10

Throw out everything you think you know about pirates. What did a real pirate captain look like? Certainly not Jack Sparrow. Captain Hook is probably a closer visual.

This is not a novelization, but a historical account of Bartholomew Roberts, the most successful pirate in history. Don't expect some dry history book here, this is fascinating! Sanders includes excerpts of actual accounts, stories and letters from the era.

He paints the full picture of why men turned to piracy - the ship captains' authority was total, and many were very cruel, but none so much as the slave ship captains. These men treated people with such brutality that human life was worthless to them, and they treated their sailors almost as poorly as the slaves. There are accounts of sailors begging food from the slaves - when food and water ran short, the sailors were deprived before the slaves. After all, the captains made no money on the sailors.

It's no wonder when a pirate ship showed up and the captain said, "who wants to be a pirate?" that men eagerly joined the crew.

What struck me as most amazing was the democracy of piracy. The captain and all the officers were elected. The crew voted on destinations. The quartermaster balanced the captain's power.

This book is excellent, a must read for anyone who is not only interested in pirates, but the history of colonies in the Caribbean in that era.

    5 out of 5 stars Spellbinding!.......2007-06-17

Sanders brings to life one of the world's most intriguing pirates, with his vivid prose and groundbreaking research. This original portrait challenges every cliche we have about pirate culture. For anyone who is interested in what life was really like aboard a pirate ship, this book is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Thumping good read.......2007-05-28

If you're looking for pictures of pirates, try Pirates: Predators of the seas, which has great illustrations. If you're looking for an incredible read about what it was like in pirate times, this is the book for you. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great Writer Great Historical Figure.......2007-04-05

I've always been fascinated by the story of Grace O'Malley (sp) the Pirate Queen. Or Granuille. (The book actually covers the different names and spellings but I have forgotten them already). I love anything by Morgan Llewelyn. I wasn't disappointed. It's a well-written and intriguing tale of a fascinating life. It's entertaining, interesting, and seems historically accurate. Llywelyn's writing brings her to life. If you like historical novels, if you are fascinated by Irish history, you will like this book.

5 out of 5 stars What a woman she was!.......2006-06-10

Grania-She-King of the Irish Seas. What a wonderful experience it was to read of this remarkable woman's life. She is a contemporary of Elizabeth I of England, and she lived life on her own terms. Not for her was a life of sitting by the fire spinning and sewing. No, she needed to be out on the open seas dealing with all the natural and human elements that she met out there. We see her living life on her terms, and with the men that she was involved with. Ms. Llywelen knows how to write a story, especially when she is delving back in history in her beloved Ireland. This was a page-turner and I couldn't put it down. I read a lot of books, and most recently have been reading a lot of mysteries, but when I started this book, I realized how much I have missed my favourite genre - historical fiction.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2003-12-14

I really like Moragan Llywelyn, and I was glad to find a book about a female legend--Grania. "Grace O'Malley"--the name given to her by the English--is portrayed in this book as strong, fierce, intelligent, a lover, and entirely human. Grania, in her adventures, learns to outwit many people, humble herself when necessary, and manages to keep her sense of humor throughout her life. This story is for anyone who likes to have a great time reading.

    2 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-08-12

Alas, it seems that every legendary writer must have his low point. After an amazing streak of masterpieces Morgan Llwellyn has proved she is only human after all with the muddled, confusing, and boring "Grania". I skimmed over the past previous and I must say I am surprised by the amount of credit and praise this book received. It truly deserves neither. It was pointless and trivial, Ms. Llwellyn never made me care whether Grania lived or die, and frankly after about 100 pages of her stupidity I almost wish she had. A waste of paper and time. Save yourself the trouble and read "Lion of Ireland" again.

    5 out of 5 stars A Christian Pirate? YUP!!!!!.......2007-08-30

This is a fabulous story!!! I couldn't put it down... It is everything a pirate adventure should be.

The characters are wonderful and realistic. Merrick, the pirate captain, is young in faith and has very realistic struggles. He is perfectly flawed and trying to overcome. Charlisse is strong and vulnerable battling her own past.

The adventures are exciting. This book was non-stop excitement, extremely believable (as far as a pirate story can be!), and made my heart flutter!

Tyndall's writing is so descriptive that I felt like I was IN the story... I could smell every smell, feel every wave, taste every flavor-- what a disappointment that it had to end. Fortunately, Amazon should be shipping the next installment soon!

If you enjoy Christian romance novels with suspense and adventure weaving it together, you will enjoy this book. It is more than just a love story-- it's a PIRATE STORY!

5 out of 5 stars Set sail for adventure and romance.......2007-08-27

This is a well-written tale of adventure on the high seas. Edmund Merrick is a reformed man. He's become a Christian and a privateer. He still struggles with his old fleshly desires, but truly wants to be the man that God created him to be. Will he succeed as a Christian and be able to keep his career as a pirate captain? Charlisse Bristol has escaped her tyrannical uncle's clutches, and is off in search of the father she has never known. She is rescued by Captain Merrick after being stranded on an island. He agrees to take her to Port Royal in search of her father. But when he learns that the man she seeks is none other than Edward the Terror, a ferocious pirate and Merrick's former captain, how will Edmund protect the lady he has grown to love from the pirate he has vowed to bring to justice?

M.L. Tyndall has crafted a very difficult to put down book. The chapters are short and easy to read. The chapter titles offer teases as to the contents. The characters and settings are so real they almost pop off the page! The Christian theme is woven creatively throughout the story. I can't wait to read book 2 in the series!

    5 out of 5 stars Swashbuckling adventure.......2007-05-21

Redemption is truly in a class of its own. Never before have I seen a pirate adventure/romance in the Christian fiction section. It's a fast-paced, fun read. Charlisse has escaped an abusive uncle and is traveling to Port Royal to find her long-lost father. On her way, she is shipwrecked and who should come to her "rescue" but a band of bloody pirates, captained by the dreamy, newly-saved-Christian Merrick. Merrick is a great hero- you fall in love with him right along with Charlisse- he's sweet and sensitive but always has a mischievious twinkle in his eye... There are also some fun secondary characters, one that reminds me of Smee from Disney's Peter Pan (at least that's the image that comes to mind).

A great adventure story with a sweet romance thrown in. Just enough Christian overtones to be a pleasant read not too preachy. Overall a great find; I've already read it twice! I'm an avid reader of Christian fiction and romance, so I was absolutely delighted to see a different sort of story. Pirate stories are usually good, action-packed reads and the Redemption is no exception. Plus it doesn't have the smut of mainstream pirate romances to ruin the story.

**Check out www dot piratequiz dot com for a quiz to determine your pirate name.** Some silly questions but fun nonetheless. My name came out as Dirty Charity Flint (apparently in pirate-speak showering daily makes you dirty...)

    4 out of 5 stars A Swashbuckling Romance!.......2007-05-12

A swashbuckling romance complete with a born again pirate! Go figure. But Mary Lu Tyndall has managed to pull it off.

As far as historical romance novels go, because secular novels had become entirely too torrid for me to tolerate, I stopped reading them years ago. So it was quite a treat to read "The Redemption." The book was great entertainment, and I can't do anything but recommend it to the historical romance fan.

Tahlula Bell (my poodle) and I enjoyed every minute we were curled up together cruising the Caribbean with Captain Merrick and Charlisse. Tahlula Bell doesn't have a thumb, but if she did, it would definitely be up. Woman Submit! Christians & Domestic Violence

3 out of 5 stars Gotta love pirates..........2007-04-27

I was really looking forward to this because of the numerous high ratings and the fact that it was a pirate book (gotta love pirates!). I have to admit I was a little bit disappointed in the character development (I didn't feel like I cared enough about them, but that could have just been me), but the plot was awesome. This book is full of tension and excitement, worth the read. Not gonna be on my keeper shelf but I did enjoy it. :-)"

      Book Description

Now, the real-life adventures and the myths of the 18th century Pirate King Edward Teach have inspired a thrilling collection of biographical poems by J. Patrick Lewis—collected in a picture-book format that will quicken the pulses and fire the imaginations of young adventurers everywhere.

This dramatically illustrated book combines history, adventure, geography, and poetry in a treasure trove of rhymes about Blackbeard and his bloodthirsty seadogs. While Lewis's swashbuckling verse celebrates Blackbeard's mystique, the author's extensive historical note recovers the facts of Edward Teach's life from time-encrusted layers of legend.

The spine-tingling poetry also explores many lesser-examined realities amid the mass of mythology inspired by Blackbeard. Each of these 14 poems is written in a distinctive style as Lewis explores different aspects of the pirate's life.

Blackbeard's seaborne reign of terror also roars to life in carefully selected historical prints, dating back to the earliest known images of the Pirate King.

Blackbeard: The Pirate King is a rich chronicle of the most notorious pirate to ever scour the oceans. It's a book to be plundered and treasured by young dreamers with imagination in their blood, poetry in their bones, and a thirst for adventure on the high seas.

4 out of 5 stars And it is, it is a glorious thing to be a pirate king.......2006-07-28

National Geographic publishers have turned their sights to the world of poetry, it seems. But not your namby-pamby flowers and sunshine type poems. No, sir. Poems with blood. Poems with gunfire. Poems with pirates! And what better way to celebrate all things piratical than with a little Blackbeard action, eh? With all things pirate hotter now than ever, the time is ripe for a book that can be part biography and part illustrated history. Throw in a couple pirate poems and the concept is a touch confusing, but no less amusing. Author J. Patrick Lewis culls together what little we know about Blackbeard's life and sets it ah-rhyming. Though a bit awkward and difficult to follow, I can think of no better work of poetry to hand to those boys forced to do poetry book reports against their will. Or, for that matter, pirate loving lasses.

The book is twelve poems, each of which documents a significant moment in Blackbeard's life. From his early days as Edward Teach to his eventual piratical apprenticeship under Benjamin Hornigold, Lewis weaves together fact and myth to bring us the a book that appreciates Blackbeard at his best. With lush color illustrations from such artists as Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, and some contemporary works as well, the book is a bright brassy alluring look at a most notorious and mysterious historical figure.

The poetry itself is rather good. It scans beautifully and even tries for different poetic forms here and there. I can't tell my stanza from my ode, but I know enough about the art to know that Lewis is comfortable in escaping the standard a,b,a,b rhyme schemes so favored by lesser children's poets. I, for one, would have enjoyed a couple more sea shanties, of course. I mean, when you think of rhyming pirates you have one of two images leap to mind. Either "The Pirates of Penzance" or sea shanties. And if you're an original author, definitely go with the shanties every time.

One of the essential problems with this book is how the information is presented to the reader. If you happen to know Blackbeard's biography by heart then you should have no trouble reading the poems and figuring out what they refer to. For each section Lewis presents a picture, a poem, and, in tiny type, an explanation of the aforementioned at the bottom of the page. Sometimes these explanations clear up the poetry. Sometimes they don't. For the full story you have to flip to the back of the book and read through the Blackbeard Time Line. In terms of history and interest, this information should really be at the front of the book. I suppose the publisher figured the poem "The Brethren of the Coast" with its image of one man sword fighting with another made for a better opener. Still, for clarity's sake, I'd prefer a little history before my poetry. Or at least facts first, artistic license second. Though, of course, sometimes even the explanations leave one out in the cold. When we learn that Blackbeard would hold contests of some sort where he would, "light several ... pots of sulfur, close the hatches, and challenge his men to see who could stay below deck the longest", we're not entirely certain why this would be hard. An adult can probably figure out that sulfur stinks terribly and to stay would be near to intolerable. Child readers, on the other hand, are going to have to read a lot into the Frank Earle Schoonover painting that accompanies this info (an image which is more than a little oblique). That said, the facts that are here are fascinating. Blackbeard may have been born in Philadelphia... or maybe Bristol, England... or perhaps London, Jamaica. He eventually was pardoned by the English king in Bath, North Carolina and even settled down with a wife. Then he was off pirating again. That time period would make an excellent bit of historical fiction speculation, don't you think? I also loved the idea that someone could be apprenticed to a pirate. Not to bring it up again, but how much more "Pirates of Penzance" can you get?

Good rhyming pirate books are few and far between. Should you have a kid who would like to pair this with a slightly goofier outing, might I suggest grabbing a copy of Lisa Wheeler's, "Seadogs" as well. The timing of the publication of this book couldn't be better. Pirates are hot hot hot stuff. So when the next Talk Like a Pirate Day rolls around (September 19th) I hope you remember to pluck this pirate-laden book of Blackbeard fun off of your shelves for a look-see. It's flawed but still a lot of fun. Arrrghh!

1 out of 5 stars Terrible waste of paper...neo-dadaist crap........2004-05-07

Kathy Acker has struck a new low for novels. This was singuatly the worst example of slaughtering trees needlessly. The plot is not worth discussing(I couldn't really follow it anyway), the book is mainly a screed against men and its readers. Inane dialogue and no feeling of setting. Calling this anything but a waste of paper would be a travesty

By the way, the neo-Dadaist reference is to an art movement in the '20s to "destroy" art by flouting conventions, and that is an apt analogy for this book.

5 out of 5 stars the best Acker.......2002-10-18

Kathy Acker is, in my opinion, the best avant-garde author who ever existed, and "Pussy King of Pirates" is her greatest work--topping even "Empire of the Senseless"--which is too bad that it was her last.
following the exploits of girls seeking treasure, Pirate girls, and surreal avatars of writers like Antonin Artaud, "Pussy King of Pirates" goes farther than Acker has ever gone with the conventions of literature. ...the book is like a jazz riff, replayed and improvised at numerous times.
      i cannot rave enough.
furthermore, "Pussy King of Pirates" has a soundtrack, that Acker recorded with the Mekons, which is also phenomenal.

2 out of 5 stars I did want to like it though.......2002-06-30

Using a style a bit like that of William Burroughs, Acker weaves a tale of various girls struggling against (society, men, each other, etc.). There are moments of crisp clarity where Acker conveys aspects of the story she's telling with the potent voices she uses, but these are not often enough to bring the story together except for the dedicated transgressive reader. This is the type of book that relies more on voice and atmosphere than on linear storylines, and Acker does succeed in giving us fascinating characters, but I was still left bewildered and numb by the end, as well as left wondering what this book was meant to convey.

      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2001-03-06

Kathy Acker is probably one of the most talented authors of the latter half of the 20th century. This album is an excellent expose for her book of the same title.

Acker and the Mekons do an excellent job of finding different styles of music to fit with the different moods of the book. Acker's literature is reknowned for its avant-garde method of "plagiarism" (she blatantly steals from other authors and restructures their ideas to fit her own); this album is no different. Many songs sound like other songs--of various genres--that you might have heard before.

Songs on this album range from industrial to trance-esque electronica to disco to reggae-ish folk to post-modern sea shanty. Interspersed between every song is Acker's spoken word.

A must have for anyone who loves Acker's works.

      4 out of 5 stars Right ho!.......1999-04-13

Huh? I don't get it. Pirate girls are cool though. Maybe if I were a woman I could swallow this book whole then spit it back out, transform myself, die, turn into a rat and all kinds of groovy stuff. I guess liked it anyway.

Living in NYC, it was a unique experience to be able to read a book, and then take my son to the place where the action occurs. We pretended to also be pirates, and this made the book a wonderful facillitator for imaginative play. But the book is for more than Manhattanites - I bought it for friends living in the Midwest, and am purchasing it again to send to a friend in Philly. I highly recommend it.
