Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

"Whatever the reason, I find that with each passing Christmas the story of the Christmas box is told less and needed more. So I record it now for all future generations to accept or dismiss as seems to them good. As for me, I believe." So begins the sentimental tale of romance and family that Richard Paul Evans went to a copy shop and self-published a few years back. Readers decidedly accepted the saga, spending millions of dollars and clamoring for more, so Evans wrote two more heart-rending episodes, Timepiece and The Letter. (The original's megasuccess sparked a TV movie and inspired a parody, Revenge of the Christmas Box.)

At last, all three are collected in one of the most popular holiday-themed tearjerkers since Dickens. Can David Parkin, a hard-working man, learn from a cache of old love letters that there's more to life than work--such as his relationship with his wife, MaryAnne? What becomes of the Parkins' angelic daughter, Andrea? When a bent and bereft old lady is spotted crouching over a snowy grave, and the night watchman tells her the cemetery is closed, what can it mean that she mysteriously disappears, leaving behind one red rose and a letter? Could it have something to do with calamitous family tragedy, with David's mother and the key to healing his hardened heart?

It sure could. Scrooge-like critics did not swoon over Evans's trilogy, but they are quite outnumbered by fans. Evans made millions of readers feel touched, as if by an angel.

Book Description

Every December, an envelope from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R. Tolkien's children. Inside would be a letter in strange, spidery handwriting and a beautiful color drawing. The letters told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how all the reindeer scattered presents all over the place; how the accident-prone Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas's house; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with a troublesome horde of goblins. Sometimes the Polar Bear would scrawl a note, adding yet more humor to the stories. No reader, young or old, can fail to be charmed by the inventiveness of Tolkien's Father Christmas Letters.

A sweet, very clever idea that the John Ronald Reuel Tolkien fellow
came up with to amuse his daughter. Definitely an interesting book for
little kids, old funny looking spidery handwriting, and all. I suppose
they probably rerelease this every year, with how popular he became
recently.

I am a big Tolkien fan but this book was new to me. It was a thrill to find and a thrill to read. I started over 20 years ago giving a Christmas book to my mother in November. I search for something special every year and the names on my Christmas book list keep growing. (I like to think it's because of my inspired choices.) LETTERS FROM FATHER CHRISTMAS has zoomed to the top of the list. The title doesn't do it justice. It is a marvelous story about Father Christmas, elves, polar bears, goblins and adventure. It also combines a family story and reflects a marvelous and moving sense of place and time. Pure genius. Get it for everyone on your list.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Stories; Did Not Work in my Classroom.......2005-02-06

While I completely agree with the other reviewers about the beauty and complexity and subtlety of J.R.R. Tolkien's writing in this wonderful collection of his letters and drawings to his children, I tried using this with my middle school 6th graders. They didn't "get" it. Mostly, they thought the story was boring although they found the illustrations "interesting." I ended up buying several different editions of the book, including the one with the letters in envelopes, so that my students could have several different experiences with the text. They never enjoyed it, ever. Perhaps they are at too much of an in-between age and it just wouldn't have been "cool" to like it? As a lover of literature, I was disappointed. As a teacher, I have to wonder if I did something wrong in my presentation of the piece or if another group of students would have reacted differently...

5 out of 5 stars This is based on the original edition........2005-01-12

Most children write letters TO Santa; few get letters FROM Santa (or Father Christmas, as British children call him.) The Tolkein children were lucky; their father was one of the top writers of the 20th C. and a fine--if totally untrained--artist.

These letters are little gems. As the years go on and the Tolkein children got older and more able to follow a complicated story, the letters get more 'literary.' Also, if you will look at the dates, as the situation in Europe heated up, so did Father Christmas' troubles with the Goblins. Children listen to the radio, too, and none of the Tolkein children could have been accused of stupidity; they knew, at some level, that something Very Bad was brewing, and I am sure that seeing that Father Christmas could deal with almost any crisis was comforting to them.

As for the illustrations, JRRT had a wonderful sense of color and line. He was very good at drawing stylized landscapes and interiors. Who wouldn't want someplace like Cliff House? He was less successful at drawing people and animals, probably because he knew very little about anatomy. Still, the portrait of Father Christmas wrapping a package is very fine; his features look somewhat Asiatic. I don't know if it is because JRRT had trouble drawing European round eyes, or if the Tolkein children were old enough to have seen pictures of Lapps and Eskimos and would have felt that such features would be appropriate to a man who lived at the North Pole. Also, the picture of the Polar Bear battling the Goblins to save the Good Children's presents was full of movement and spirit enough that one didn't mind the questionable anatomy; the same could be said of the illustration of the accidental flooding of the English Deliveries room.

If you have children in your life, get a copy. Younger children will love to have these read to them, while older ones will love reading them themselves.

Book Description

Katherine O'Connor often spends her days at a cozy café on Blossom Street in Seattle--where she writes Christmas letters for other people. She's good at making their everyday lives sound more interesting. More humorous. More dramatic.

But for Dr. Wynn Jeffries, who also frequents the café, Christmas means lies and deception. In fact, the renowned child psychologist recommends that parents "bury Santa under the sleigh." Katherine, however, feels that his parenting philosophy is one big mistake--at least, based on her five-year-old twin nieces, who are being raised according to his "Free Child" methods.

She argues with Wynn about his theories, while he argues that her letters are nothing but lies. They disagree about practically everything--and yet, somehow, they don't really want to stop arguing.

As the days--and nights--move closer to Christmas, Katherine and Wynn both discover that love means accepting your differences. And Christmas is about the things you share….

5 out of 5 stars A very moving story.......2007-02-06

CHRISTMAS LETTERS was a very moving story. Katherine O'Connor bumps into Dr. Wynn Jeffries, who doesn't approve that Christmas be famed by giving presents to children. Is he being a Scrooge? Or did his parents prescribe the same thing for him when he was a child?
Despite Dr. Jeffries philosophy on Christmas, Katherine is drawn to him. Even though she doesn't understand his feelings on the Christmas subject, she confronts him about it. This leads to more arguing, which they both love.
Katherine's sister loved Dr. Jeffries new book "Free Child" and, begins to raise her twins by using his methods. Once she found out that Katherine knew Dr. Jeffries, she asked Katherine if she could get her copy of his new book autographed for her? Katherine agreed, even though she thought Dr. Jeffries wouldn't even talk to her after their discrepancy, let alone sign the book. Will Katherine and Wynn fall madly in love with each other? Or will the two, upon seeing each other, turn and walk away?
Debbie Macomber, a New York Times Bestselling Author, will make you laugh and maybe cry a little too, when you read CHRISTMAS LETTERS. Her ability to bring a smile, and maybe a few tears, to her many fans is something to be shared during the holidays.

5 out of 5 stars Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas Book.......2007-01-04

Debbie Macomber captures the mood of Christmas, its sights, sounds, and tasty treats, in her annual holiday gift to her readers. Her likeable heroine even writes Christmas letters for other people as a "second job." Between her at-home work as a medical transcriber and hunting for the perfect job in public relations, she has found the way to make even mundane or depressing lives cheerful for the annual Christmas message to friends and families.

Heroine Katherine O'Connor (K.O. to her friends) is outspoken and brutally honest, especially when she crosses paths with renowned child psychologist Wynn Jeffries. She has been predisposed to dislike the attractive doctor's philosophy of raising free children since her own two nieces have started to run amuck once K.O.'s sister adopted his child-rearing techniques. When they do meet, there are fireworks and harsh words, but an attraction that is undeniable. They disagree on many things, but somehow they agree that they have something special. There is the inevitable break-up until both discover that love means accepting your differences and Christmas is about sharing. No great surprises in this one, but a totally enjoyable tale to add to your happy holiday mood. If you leave out cookies for Santa and visions of sugarplums dance in your head, this is a perfect addition to your holiday reading.

Book Description

Fifteen years ago, long before anyone else thought of tucking actual letters and notes inside a book, Little, Brown published The Jolly Postman by Allan and Janet Ahlberg. This wonderful book gave children a chance to read letters sent from one fairy tale or Mother Goose character to another. Among the funny notes was one from Jack, who lolled on a sun-drenched island, thanking the Giant for the gold that let him afford such a nifty vacation. 5 out of 5 stars Jolly Christmas Postman great.......2006-12-12

I bought this for Christmas to read to my seven year old, I had no idea that it was full of cards and letters. She loves to get mail and she devoured this book! The cards and letters are addressed to different storybook/fairytale characters and is great! I purchased the original book, The Jolly Postman, at the same time and she can't wait to look at it.

While doing some Christmas shopping for holiday books for my grand daughters, I came across this book. I bought it not really knowing what it was. I am so glad that it was one of the books I chose. Great illustrations, wonderful little greeting cards and other novel things to open that the postman delivers to Red Riding Hood, Gingerbread Boy and others, tucked in pocket pages. The postman finally ends up with a visit to Santa. This book will be a repeat purchase by me as gifts for many children and "big kids" I know for years to come. It's different, clever and fun - A book that will become a tradition to read.

Being a Reading Specialist working with at risk readers from first grade through fourth grade, any book that makes them want to read is a winner with me. My fourth graders wanted the information on how to find the book! The book also gave us a reason to review nursery rhymes without feeling that it is a "baby" thing for fourth graders to do.

5 out of 5 stars 'Angelina's Christmas' is a charming addition to the mouseling library, and a wonderful holiday classic for all!.......2006-11-30

Young Angelina Ballerina couldn't be more upset when she spots old Mr. Bell sitting all by his lonesome at Christmastime, looking like a sad puppy. Mr. Bell used to be the jovial postman in town, who brought gifts and cards to everyone during the holidays, and played the town Santa Claus for all of the little mouselings. Angelina, full of Christmas spirit, decides that it is up to her to make Mr. Bell's season bright. So, with the help of her young cousin Henry, as well as her father, Angelina bundles up some cookies and cakes to bring to Mr. Bell. But when they arrive, Henry is too concerned about Christmas Eve, and whether or not he will have the chance to see Santa Claus in the flesh, to notice the joy that twinkles in Mr. Bell's eyes at the prospect of visitors and good, old-fashioned holiday cheer. When Henry learns that Santa Claus comes in the middle of the night, and that he won't get to speak to the illustrious Saint Nick, he bursts out in tears. That is, until he learns that there's a live Santa Claus living amongst them all, right here in town, and that his presence will not only bring a smile to young Henry's face, but fill old Mr. Bell with the joy of the holiday, as well.

ANGELINA BALLERINA can be called nothing less than a children's icon. Her presence in numerous glorious children's books, and now in her own TV show make her more and more well-known, while her lovable, kind heart grows bigger by the day. Katharine Holabird works wonders with a pen, as she tells the tales of the young, ballet-loving mouseling who has big dreams, accompanied by an even bigger heart; while the gorgeous, full-color illustrations by Helen Craig bring each and every Angelina "tail" to life. ANGELINA'S CHRISTMAS is a charming addition to the mouseling library, and a wonderful holiday classic for all!

This beautifully illustrated tale gives the reader a warm feeling when a retired postal worker, who is alone in the world, is visited by Angelina and invited to appear as Father Christmas at the school Christmas show. The community appreciates his contribution and he is invited to the school show every year. This is a wonderful reminder to us all that the elderly should not only be cherished, but that they still have much to offer to the community.

I really loved this book. It was my very first book I got. Of course I got it because my name is Angelina. When I was little I used to think the book was actually about me! I own the first publication of this book and noticed that in the original one I've got it says "Santa Clause" and in the new one that my little cousin has it says "Father Christmas". I don't understand the change. Although I still recommend this book for any little girl who loves to dance, or who's name is Angelina!

Book Description

Last year's bestselling anthology of outstanding stories and original watercolors A Very Southern Christmas was an instant hit. This year we are pleased to present another stellar collection of short fiction that encourages us to celebrate and meditate on the meaning of the holiday season.

Christmas in the South reminds us of the multitude of emotions that arise as December approaches and the shopping days decrease, as anticipations and hopes rise about reunions, renewed vows, charity, and the perfect present. This year's anthology includes some of the South's finest contemporary fiction writers: Doris Betts, Larry Brown, Ellen Douglas, Michael Knight, Clyde Edgerton, Gail Godwin, Jill McCorkle, Carolyn Haines, Silas House, and Donald Harington. Accompanied by Wyatt Waters's vibrant watercolors commissioned specifically for this collection, this beautiful volume, like its predecessor, promises to be a treasured keepsake.

5 out of 5 stars Real Life at Christmas.......2005-01-26

Sure, Christmas is eggnog, gifts, desserts galore, choirs singing carols, and families coming together to bask in each other's company. Christmas is my favorite season, and I appreciate it for all of these reasons and more...however, often the eggnog is spiked without prior notification, the unstylish shirts from your grandmother don't fit and have to be returned, the desserts pack on an unwanted five pounds, the choirs sing off key, and the out-of-town guests who have stayed at your house for three days too long already show no sign of budging. This, too, is Christmas, real life at Christmas. The particular strength of McCord and Tucker's collection, as with their past collections, is that they do not overly romanticize a holiday which is simultaneously the best and the worst of times for so many of us each year. With humor, pathos, joy, reverence, irreverence, spontaneity, and some of the finest creative writing ever done on this particular theme, the editors render a balanced account of Christmas with its ups and downs, laughter and tears, to which most any real person can and will easily relate. This book is a must have for those who appreciate the holiday for all that it is, for all that it really is.

1 out of 5 stars Christmas in the South.......2005-01-21

I am sorry to report that Christmas in the South did not live up to my expectations. I was looking forward to some cozy Christmas stories but unfortunately, most of the stories left me wondering what the point or message was. Perhaps if read in a classroom or discussion setting, more could be gained from reading this collection, but for the reader looking for some feel-good, cozy Christmas stories, this might not be the book for you.

1 out of 5 stars Buy something else.......2005-01-16

I love a good collection of Christmas stories. I usually get a book of this type every year around mid December to read. It doesn't always have to be one of those "make you feel good" books or "Its a Wonderful Life" type of story. I loved Skipping Christmas, the Time Piece, the Christmas Box (I think that was the name of it). Christmas in the South is a wonderful collection of short stories from Southern writers, but they have little or nothing to do with Christmas or even winter for that matter. Many of the short stories, like those you read in High School and College, leave you confused at the end and are worthy of group discussions to figure out exactly what (if anything) the writer was wanting to tell us. I will not be buying or even borrowing its sequel. I wish I had used the money I had spent on it to buy some other Christmas story.

Book Description

In The Christmas Letters, three generations of women reveal their stories of love and marriage in the letters they write to family and friends during the holidays. It's a down-home Christmas story about tradition, family, and the shared experiences of women.

Here, in a letter of her own, Lee Smith explains how she was inspired to write this celebrated epistolary novel:

Dear Friends,

Like me, you probably get Christmas letters every year. I read every word and save every letter. Because every Christmas letter is the story of a life, and what story can be more interesting than the story of our lives? Often, it is the story of an entire family. But you also have to read between the lines with Christmas letters. Sometimes, what is not said is even more important than what is on the page.

In The Christmas Letters, I have used this familiar format to illumine the lives, hopes, dreams, and disappointments of three generations of American women. Much of the story of The Christmas Letters is also told through shared recipes. As Mary, my favorite character, says, "I feel as if I have written out my life story in recipes! The Cool Whip and mushroom soup years, the hibachi and fondue period, then the quiche and crOpes phase, and now it's these salsa years."

I wrote this little book for the same reason I write to my friends and relatives every holiday--Christmas letters give us a chance to remember and celebrate who we are.

With warmest greetings, Lee Smith

4 out of 5 stars What a great book for Christmas Reading.......2005-12-24

I received this book as a pre-Christmas book many years ago and have just finished reading it for maybe the fifth time just before Christmas. It is a very quick and engaging read.

The Christmas Letters recounts all of the bittersweet memories that surround Christmas. It is not necessarily all happy, but it is all very real. Maybe as I get older, the pathos of Christmas becomes more real - both the sadness associated with memories of the past which can no longer be recreated and the realization that we can only celebrate from that place where we currently live in our lives. When we are in good places, then Christmas is magical. When not, Christmas can be very difficult. Smith touches on both of these points.

I am a great fan of Lee Smith's books. I gave this one only 4 stars, but that is in relation to her other books. To me, her best is Fair and Tender Ladies, also written in letter form.

Christmas blessings to all.

3 out of 5 stars The Christmas Letters..........2004-12-01

For the most part I liked this book. It's the story of one family told through three generations of Christmas Letters (well, two really, the third generation only writes one letter). Now, it was very difficult for me to get past the feeling of...'why is all this stuff being written in x-mas letters, shouldn't the family have already known about all this stuff? Wouldn't you tell your family these things as they happen?'.

I know it was necessary to include these things in order for the reader to understand everything that's gone on in the family over the years, but it was very distracting. This said, I think this book would have been much better if it were formatted as a regular novel, not in Christmas letters. I believe it would have been a very interesting read.

But regardless, the story itself was good. It kept me turning the pages. I really enjoyed the second to last letter, where Mary (the second generation) sends out the REAL Christmas letter, not the superficial one that everyone gets saying all is peachy-keen and life couldn't be more perfect, blah, blah, blah. This letter tells us the 'good stuff'. I recommend this book as a very quick little Christmas read. It'll help you get into the Christmas spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Cute!.......2004-02-29

A quick, interesting, wonderful read! You won't be sorry to pick this one up and you won't want to put it down until you are done! I look forward to reading more of Lee Smith's books!

5 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this book.......2003-12-22

The Christmas Letters is a short novella by Lee Smith; my Mamaw gave me a copy for Christmas and i read it in one sitting. I'd recommend it to anyone, but particularly to anyone who writes her/his own Christmas letters).

It's an epistolary novel told through the yearly Christmas letters of three generations of rural women, and spans the geography of West Virginia and North Carolina. The letters are somewhat typical of that sort of structure, recounting births and deaths and achievements, yet tell the story of the women's lives, their relationships, their struggles to cope with the hardships each generation is given--a husband off in WWII, a brother brokenly and miserably surviving Viet Nam, divorce, loss of a parent, a child leaving home and choosing a lifestyle you can't understand but try to accept. By the end, one of the letter-writers has come to a point where she addresses her letter frankly, and reveals the subtext behind all of her cheery soldier-on previous letters, and you can go back and see exactly how those emotions were definitely present beneath the surface of the writing of the earlier letters (some you'll pick up as you read them the first time around, others will be a surprise).

The book is a lovely quiet holiday read, and one that for me will take its place beside A Christmas Carol as a book to read every Christmas season, to remind me of what I hold dear about the holidays, an embracing of family, heritage, goodwill, charity...in short, the Christmas Spirit.

4 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!.......2002-11-21

I read this book in one sitting! Not your traditional "feel good" Christmas story, nonetheless, it still grabs your interest and simply will not let go. The recipes are interesting in that they make no attempt at being detailed, fancy or gourmet. Rather they evoke a very accurate image of each generation, from the simple custard representative of long-past generation's idea of what people who are ill should eat through the quick, easy, processed, food of the sixties and finally a back-to-mother-earth ethnic vegetarian recipe that reflects the character's new life(style). What I really liked was that the recipes set the tone without overpowering the story. So many books written in this style are all recipe and no story but that is not the case here. My only complaint is that the story ended with a mystery clouding it. What is up with the twin-thing? And what happend to "Rachel" mentioned in the first few letters from Birdie? She just disappears. Is she the twin to Margaret Hodges Long mentioned in the final chapter by Melanie? If not, then what is the story with the disappearing twin and where, exactly, did Rachel go? Mary tells us something about her sister Ruthie and we get a sense of loose ends tied up, but Birdie leaves us hanging. I sense another story. I hope so! I want to know about the twins from Birdie's generation!

5 out of 5 stars Great After Christmas Book.......2000-12-29

This book is fabulous for before, during, and especially after Christmas. I always use it with my 2nd & 3rd graders in January every year. The children and I love it! Samantha, a young Australian girl writes Santa a Thank You letter for all her Christmas gifts, and Santa writes back. This starts a whole year of correspondence back and forth. Santa writes about the animals and climate in the Arctic Circle. Samantha writes about life in Australia. The lush, detailed art work by Kerry Argent lets you know that this fictional book has a lot of "real" information in it. The children love comparing and contrasting Australia, the Arctic, and their home town. This book is great for teaching letter writing too. This book is a great gift for Winter birthdays.
