Book Description
While walking on the beach with his Labrador, poet and literature professor Scott Cairns ran headlong into his midlife crisis. A fairly common experience among men nearing the age of fifty, midlife crises are usually manifested in the form of sports cars and younger women; not so for this Baptist turned Eastern Orthodox. Cairns had a realization that as the advancement of his spiritual life was moving at a snail's pace, time was running out, and his crisis emerged in the form of a desperate need to seek out prayer.
Told with wit and exquisite prose, Slow Pilgrim is the story of Scott's spiritual journey to the mystical island of Mt. Athos. With twenty monasteries and thirteen sketes scattered across its sloping terrain, the Holy Mountain was the perfect place for Scott to seek out a prayer father and to discover the stillness of the true prayer life. His narrative takes the reader from a beach in Virginia to the most holy Orthodox monasteries in the world to a monastery in Arizona and back again as Scott struggles to find his prayer path. His story includes accounts of the relationships he forges with several different monks and priests along the way, as well as life–long friendships he makes with other pilgrims.

A Spiritual and Physical Travelogue.......2007-10-08
In his book, A Short Trip to the Edge, Scott Cairns takes the reader through a series of journeys to the Orthodox holy site and monastic sanctuary Mt. Athos (with a brief side trip to a monastary in Arizona also detailed). The book is a record of Dr. Cairns' journey on two levels. One aspect of the book describes his travels on a purely physical level; the places he goes, the people he encounters, the things he sees and the obstacles he overcomes. Intertwined within this narrative is also the spiritual journey he takes in order to discover how to live a life of prayer and how this is different than having a prayer life. In both attempts the author sets out to record his authentic journey and his honesty and candor are refreshing as is the simplicity with which he tells his story. Unlike many works on Athonite spiritual life or prayer life in the Orthodox tradition, this book tries to keep things on a level that is accessable to someone who is not a monastic.
The first aspect of the book is relatively successful in conveying the author's experience of gong to a place as different from the rest of the world as Mt. Athos while dealing with the intrusions the world inevitably makes on a place it deems has having something it values, even if it keeps that thing at arm's distance. I found the simply humanity of this part of the narrative refreshing enjoyed Cairn's stories of meeting with other pilgrams on the roads and with sharing coffee and tea with the monks of the mountains. Both brought home the theme that this is a place where heaven and earth intersect in very real and powerful ways.
In weaving in the second aspect, Dr. Cairns attempts to introduce us to the traditions and ideas of Eastern prayer and spirituality. It is here that I found that Cairns' ran into difficulty. The author tries very hard to bring out the important ideas and practices of the Eastern Orthodox church in a way that someone who isn't Orthodox might understand. Unfortunately, he is trying to do it in writing about a culture that is anything but understandable in modern North American terms (especially if one is used to the hyper-rationalistic tendancies found in many expressions of the Christian faith today). He does an admirable job explaining the ideas of nous and hesychia but without some background in Orthodoxy, these explanations are likely confusing and imcomplete. Additionally, there is much assumed of the reader regarding an understanding and acceptance of Orthodox worship and monastic practice. Finally, I hate to say it as I expect it will make me sound too parochial, but there's a point where there is just a bit too much Greek. Perhaps those who are used to worshipping in a Greek Orthodox context will not find the language a bit overwhelming.
With these issues in mind, I still found the book to be lively, engaging and challenging. The prose is lovely and wry and it carries the story lightly when it needs to while never trivializing the struggles the author is undergoing on his journeys both spiritually and logistically. The subject matter asked me to examine my own thoughts about prayer, spiritual mentorship and living my faith in powerful ways. Additionally, I found the authenticity of this travelogue, especially where Cairns' shares his last journey to Mt. Athos with his son, truly moving. I would recommend this book without reservation to those with some background in or understanding of Orthodox spirituality. For those who lack such a background, much of the book will seem strange and unfamiliar and the material may require a good bit more work to access. That having been said , the ideas regarding prayer being something we live are well worth the effort should the reader be willing to undertake the journey.
Journey to the End!.......2007-10-05
Reading this book is a pilgrimage in itself. After l listened to an interview with the author, I was intrigued and excited about reading the book's novel approach to Mt. Athos. The majority of the books published on the topic are either for academic study or seminal interest. The book is basically, a regular Joe's travel journal about his experiences on the Holy Mountain.
After reading the first 80 pages or so, I thought what a waste of my time and money. Pages and pages were full of numerous details about rustic roads, and gripes about waiting for free hospitality at overcrowded monasteries. The book is missing a full account of details about these unique places, I found this disappointing. I seriously thought about recycling the book before I finished it.
Cairns' struggles with the book parallels his search for a spiritual father. There appears to be many dead ends on different levels with the text itself and his journeys. Surprisingly, the last 50 pages or so made the initial time spent, worthwhile. I have never been moved to tears on different occasions by a book before, his self revealing insights after numerous frustrations are very enlightening. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like a challenge. In the book, Cairns transports the reader along with his own ups and downs to arrive to the beauty that is beyond the landscapes, and the treasures of the Holy Mountain.
Long trip to nowhere .......2007-04-12
Ever since reading "The Holy Mountain" by Kyriacos Markides, I've been fascinated by the monks who live in the ancient monasteries of Greece, so I bought this book with great anticipation, and finished the first chapter before I ever left the bookstore.
But I'm sorry to say that Short Trip To The Edge quickly stalled. Cairnes is by many accounts a fine Christian poet, but his writing here is surprisingly unpoetic and at times redundant as we're told in almost every chapter that an experience is "palpable" or "sweet." We don't need to be told every time he stopped to "venerate the icons."
But most annoying is Cairnes' neurotic, self-absorbed quest to find a spiritual father who can help him develop a life of prayer. He makes three trips to Greece, and one visit to a monastery in Arizona to find the elusive father, but comes up empty.
Most Christians struggle in their prayer life and I do appreciate Cairne's honesty, but I couldn't help but wonder what would happen if he took the focus off himself. Never once does he ponder Jesus' command to serve others.
Is journeying to Mt. Athos three times to find a spiritual father what Jesus had in mind when he said "take up your cross and follow me"? Cairnes seems to think that the goal of a Christian life is to "find peace." I almost felt sorry for him as he describes waiting hours for a meeting with a potential spiritual father, only to be given some flippant advice.
Short Trip To The Edge is a case study in the dangers of idolotry. Despite the subtitle of the book, Cairne's story makes clear that no place on earth will ever resemble Heaven.
A glimpse of heaven with earth mixed in.......2007-03-04
Since I am a woman, I cannot personally reap the spiritual benefits of a pilgrimage to Mt. Athos. However, Scott Cairns' account of his visits to the Holy Mountain during his sabbatical year as a professor at the Univ. of Missouri allowed me to vicariously experience what it must be like for an Orthodox convert to go there. He describes the good, the bad, and the ineffably divine of what it is like for a modern-day pilgrim to pay a visit to the heart of Orthodox monasticism. The focus of his pilgrimage is his endeavor to find a spiritual father who can guide him in how to grow closer to God, specifically through the Jesus Prayer.
Cairns deftly interweaves the physical realities and legalities ("Let that be a lesson for somebody") of getting there and getting around while, at the same time, describing his impressions and feelings about finally arriving at The Mountain. His gifts as a poet allow him to find the perfect word to capture his experience or the description of his environment.
There are humorous but instructive moments, such as when he and his friend Nick decide to walk to a monastery rather than ride in a vehicle, or when he describes a pilgrim he calls "the sheriff" who demands that everyone follow the rules while eating. There are also glimpses of the meeting of Heaven and Earth on Mt. Athos as Cairns describes kissing the warm left hand of St. Mary Magdalene, the spice-scented foot of St. Anne (accompanied by "a curious sweetness, a warming of the heart") and the fragrant brow of the skull of St. Andrew.
I was helped in my own spiritual journey by Cairns' complete honesty. He describes the time when he was finally able to have a moment with an elder and feels like he made a mistake by asking the wrong question. He also writes of other situations that an Orthodox convert might find embarrassing when centuries-old protocol has been breached. I could relate.
Cairns finds much guidance towards what he is seeking, and his journey is instructive for anyone who is also trying to draw closer to God. (A similar account is "The Mountain of Silence" by Kyriacos C. Markides," another contemporary writer.) My only disappointment is that this book was not twice as long. Maybe more visits by Cairns to the Holy Mountain will produce a sequel?

Book Description
This classic guide to hiking in the Adirondacks has been extensively revised and updated and now includes 5 new hikes.
Barbara McMartin has been hiking in the Adirondacks for decades; her family, for generations. She has distilled her vast experience into the 50 hikes offered here, representing a cross-section of the wilderness and wild forest: rugged peak climbs, gentle trips to distant waterfalls, bushwhacks to wild rivers. In all she describes 360 miles of trails to caves, uninhabited lakes, wetlands, cliffs, and fire towers across the Park's 6 million acres.
The hikes range in length from 1.5 to 13.5 miles. Each hike description includes a topographic map, mile-by-mile directions, and information on distance, difficulty, terrain, and hiking time. An overview chart makes it easy to pick a hike for every ability. Throughout, McMartin provides commentary on the natural history of the region, along with colorful incidents from Adirondack history. 50 black and white photographs, 51 maps, index.
Customer Reviews:
great book.......2007-09-06
we only had 3 days to hike and we did 4 of the hike from this book - great choices, very clear and exact details. A MUST
good guide.......2003-06-27
This guide has easy trails and hard trails all in one for a pretty low price
One Of The Experts On Lesser Known Gems!.......2002-08-10
Barbara McMartin is one of those few resident Adirondackers that has supplied the world with great information, anecdotes and history about lesser known trails in the Adirondacks. Keeping to the less over-run trails, the reader is treated to beautiful trails to remote mountaintops, caves, fire-towers, unique wetlands and historic sites.
This newer edition is only slightly different (three more hikes), but it includes great topo maps, directions, trail and destination descriptions and just a ton of interesting local folklore to keep you going. A great find.
Disappointed!.......2002-07-29
My boyfriend and I just returned from a day hike in the Adirondacks yesterday and we were so disappointed with this book for numerous reasons. First, the directions given to the actual hike were very vague and I had to spend almost two hours on the internet beforehand trying to get specific directions to the trail. Basically, what should have been a one hour drive ended up being two. Second, once we were on the hike we found this book hard to follow and distances were off. Trails that the book claimed were present were not and specifics of landmarks, bridges, streams, etc. were also absent, leaving my boyfriend and I to "guesstimate" what location the author was actually referring to. About 4 miles into the hike, we put the book in our backpack and there it stayed. Despite this we still had an enjoyable hike, however, if you are thinking of purchasing this book...take the author's advice and BRING A COMPASS since a lot of the trail directions in the book rely on N, S, E, and W. Also, be prepared to spend some time hunting for specific directions and try to hook up with someone who knows the trails since we missed the "climax" of the hike due to the book's poor directions and out of date landmarks. An updated edition of this book should be published.
You can practically feel the Adirondacks..........2000-04-29
Just browsing through the book and reading about the hikes took me right there. The details of the hikes are just amazing and although I haven't been there yet, my husband and I have dog-eared several pages of "must-hikes". Our 2 day trip to the Adirondacks has just turned into a week and a half long trip!

Book Description
The Heechee were perhaps the greatest and most tantalizing mystery the human race had ever known. The first Heechee artifacts were uncovered on Venus, and in the beginning they were treated as nothing more than costly souvenirs and curiosities for tourists from Earth and Mars. But when an asteroid stocked with autonavigating spacecraft was discovered, suddenly the Heechee universe was thrown wide open, giving birth to the Gateway Corporation and bringing untold riches to the adventurers who risked the unknown to see where those Heechee spacecraft would take them.
Many of those brave souls never returned. The ones who did brought back technological wonders that transformed life on Earth -- but of the Heechee themselves there was no sign...
The Gateway Trip, lavishly illustrated by artist Frank Kelly Freas, presents the tales of those perilous journeys and marvelous discoveries, as those intrepid pioneers followed the trail of the elusive Heechee and changed the course of human history forever!
Customer Reviews:
Just to kill time.......2003-07-02
The first part of this book is really good, the story of Audee Walthers will keep you reading and maybe you will learn something about Venus, the rest of the book is going down and down as you read, it doesn't have any punch to keep it reading, I can tell you that when you finish the story of Audee Walthers close the book and you will be very happy, if you decide to finish it don't expect to much from it.
A Gift To Diehard Heechee Fans.......2002-11-12
This book is not a continuation of the Heechee saga. However, it does provide a wealth of background material. Much of the book will already be familiar to readers of the Saga. Two bonuses are noteworthy. There is a long short story (around 100 pages) detailing the life of Audie Walthers when he was an airbody pilot on Venus. This story is pretty engrossing, and gives further insight into the goings on on Venus in the world of Gateway. Also, for those curious after reading Gateway as to the adventures of the other prospectors, there is a section that deals with the successes and disasters encountered by these people. If you are a [big] fan of Gateway, this book should be obtained. Otherwise, the short story about Audie and some additional background material might still convince you to get the book.
Not his best work.......1998-07-08
Mostly dry and repetitive narrative, but does fill in some detail in the history of man's investigation of the Heechee, and does include at least one good short story. A fairly light and quick read.
Marginal at best - only for die-hard Heechee lovers.......1997-02-26
This book is an overview of how the discovery of Heechee artifacts affected human history. If you've already read the Heechee novels, the only part of interest is a single short story; the rest is mere repetition. If you haven't read the Heechee novels, pass this over and start with Gateway

Customer Reviews:
Excellent practical tips.......2006-08-03
Covers all the basic with very practical tips. Every leader of a short term missions trip should read this book. I highly recommend it for new leaders as well as seasoned leaders.
AWESOME BOOK.......2005-09-27
This is a must read for any first time short term missionary. It prepares you for trips from 1 week to 1 year.
For Missions Team Leaders.......2003-07-21
Maybe you are a missions pastor teaching a class on short-term missions and are looking for a textbook, or you are leading a team overseas. You might be going on your first trip and want to know how to approach the whole matter.
"The Essential Guide to the Short Term Mission Trip" by David C. Forward explains with examples the sorts of things which those in missions leadership at a church should be thinking about.
The points made in this book could avert disasters. What good is spending a lot of money to go overseas only to find you've no idea what you've got yourself into? While it is true that having a flexible personality is key to any missions effort, it is also a good idea to prepare when possible.
Some readers may cringe at the strategic sensibility of David Forward. "The Essential Guide to the Short Term Mission Trip" is all about practical thinking. St. Paul prepared practically for his trips. He knew where he was going, how long it would take, and how much food to being along. Forward helps think like Paul.
Noting that many going on the trip may be first time short-termers, or first time airplane riders, he discusses travel tips. For example, bring a spare pair of glasses, remember to bring a list of people you intend to write (Like your supporters), and how to deal with lost luggage. He even outlines how to run a team meeting, with suggestions for topics.
He spends time on the complex matter of money, and how support should be raised, and what a church's financial involvement should be. He is not dogmatic, but points out the pro's and con's of the various positions.
Forward's missions experience has taken him primarily from Britain to Romania, with stopovers in Budapest. He cites from this experiences fluently, and helps the reader see how the essentials in this guide can be applied. He gives anecdotes about cultural sensitivity, like how in Romania, the real Dracula is considered a national hero for reasons other than what Bram Stoker's novel talks about. Jokes, Forward writes, about the morbid side of Dracula are unappreciated by locals.
The appendices are useful, helping the reader think through the incidentals. Some things, like having calling card codes and travel insurance numbers with you, should not be overlooked.
I fully recommend this excellent tool for preparing a team for short-term missions. For a solid text helping the sender church, see "Serving as Senders" by Neal Pirolo.

A FABULOUS Resource!.......2000-06-16
This is the best book ever written on short term missions. It helped me organize our teams and we gave one copy to each team member for their own planning. It covers the spiritual basis and logistical requirements, it tells us about mistakes others have made so we can focus in being true missionaries.
This book is a valuable tool for first-time trip planners!.......1999-06-04
In writting "The Essential Guide to the Short Term Mission Trip," David C. Forward has generously provided first-time trip planners with a comprehensive and detail-filled resource. I would recommend it to any congregation that is looking for a "manual" that will get them started and see them through their first trip.

Book Description
The beloved characters--mortal and immortal--of Topper return in this uproarious romp through the south of France. One of Thorne Smith's best-loved comedies, it proves once again that he is the undisputed master of urbane wit and sophisticated repartee.
Cosmo Topper, the mild-mannered bank manager who was persuaded to take a walk on the wild side by the ghosts of George and Marion Kerby in Topper, finds himself reunited with his dyspeptic wife for an extended vacation on the Riviera. But he doesn't have long to enjoy the peace and quiet before the irrepressible Kerbys materialize once again and start causing fracases, confusing the citizenry, alarming the gendarmes, getting naked, and turning every occasion into revelry or melee. Soon Marion decides that Topper as a ghost would be even more laughs than Topper in the flesh. And all she needs to arrange is one simple little murder.
Born in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1892, educated at Dartmouth, THORNE SMITH was an early cohort of Dorothy Parker's. He achieved literary success in 1926 with the publication of Topper and went on to publish nine novels in the next eight years. He earned a passionate following among both critics and readers before his death, at the age of forty-two, in 1934.
CAROLYN SEE is the author of nine books. Her latest novel is The Handyman. She lives in Pacific Palisades, California.
Customer Reviews:
George (Cary Grant) replaced with a dog.......2007-01-13
We find Mr. Topper (Billie Burke) is going to get a divorce due to catching her hubby with a woman that is not a woman, Marion Kerby (Constance Bennett.) or at least she is being pushed in to thinking she wants a divorce bay a so called friend of whom has a nefarious purpose of her own. Toppy must go after her and woo her back.
The story line is week and the acting trite. There is a defiant lack of comedy or even credulity. There is a countless count and an unbelievable scheme. Oh yes, Cary grant is replaced by Skippy.
On the plus side Cosmo Topper (Roland Young) does a great job of being pushed around by the invisible. And Alan Mowbray the bad guy in "Charlie Chan in London" made a believable butler. "Now you are holding the door open for me."
The weak link in the trilogy.......2005-06-08
There are three classic Topper films from the golden age of movies. The first, with Cary Grant, is a winner. The third, with Joan Blondell, is even better. But Topper Takes A Trip, the second in the series, is a complete dud. The script is simply embarrassing and wholly unfunny. The scenes (e.g. the bartender and the dog)are often pathetic. It took some doing to make a flop with the likes of the stars in this film. Even Franklin Pangborn is awful. But reading lines like that, how could he be otherwise? Best forgotten.
DELIGHTFUL SEQUEL........2002-08-28
This follow-up to the highly successful TOPPER - which was made earlier that year (1939) - picks up where the last film left off. After reestablishing the auto accident which killed the drunken Bennett and Grant in the first film and turned them into ghosts, we are treated (sans Cary Grant) to a hilarious 85 minutes. Clara Topper (Burke) spots Marion Kirby (Bennett) in her husband Cosmo's room. Clara goes to Paris - with Cosmo following - in order to get a divorce because she believes her hen-pecked husband has been seeing another "woman". Unable to explain to Clara that Marion is only a ghost, Cosmo tries to fast-talk Burke into a reconciliaton. Several floating martinis later, Bennett manages to reconcile the couple, and is now able to join her husband in their celestial home. The trick photography by Roy Seawright is astonishing for its day. Cushions which deflate when invisible figures sit on them, cigarettes being smoked in mid-air and pencils writing notes by themselves are all executed with great skill. The sight of the Kirby's dog Skippy - also a ghost - is hilarious when only his tail fails to become invisible or when he bites the ankles of totally flabbergasted men! A third film, TOPPER RETURNS is a surprisingly pleasant diversion from 1941: it stars Joan Blondell as Marion Kirby.
Comedy at its best.......2000-01-03
Topper movies have been some of the best clean cut comedy ever. These are the types of movies you can watch over and over and still continue to laugh. More comedy movies of today should be made this way. I know there are "Topper" lovers as myself and would enjoy being able to see them on the American Movie Classic channel or just on regular tv from time to time. The only move I own is Topper Returns and would love to have these others. I grew up watching these movies and will continue to watch them. Please bring them back.

it would do all of us good if more movies were being made today that can make us laugh just by it being funny not by it being an effort to hurt or humiliate a person place or thing. maybe someone someday will look again at these old classics and see how refreshing it was to be entertained not by seeing people or places blowing up or being destroyd but just being allowed to sit back relax and enjoy the fact that what your watching can entertain you your grandmother and your kids all at the same time.
