4 out of 5 stars stretching for pregnancy.......2007-10-10

An Ok book, but I believe there needs be more information and excercise on the pelvic floor, and its importance during pregnancy, labour and afterwards

3 out of 5 stars a so-so resource.......2007-09-25

I teach yoga, and had a 6month pregnant woman join my 2ndlevel class.
I wanted to be sure to treat her tenderly.
This book does have suggested postures to use for prenatal, dividing them up into trimesters, but it was weak in theory.
I was hoping to understand the theory behind why she should not lay on her right side, or why she should not lower her head below her heart.
Overall, as long as you follow the photos, it appears to be safe.

5 out of 5 stars Safe and effective.......2007-03-19

This teacher is of Iyengar background. The photos are dated, but content is excellent.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was looking for..........2006-11-03

This is a pretty good book if you are going to be doing yoga at home...I was hoping more for a book that would give me suggestions on alternate positions for poses that I shouldn't be doing in group classes. All in all though, not a bad book, just not quite what I was looking for.

3 out of 5 stars Not for teachers.......2006-09-29

This is a handbook designed for students. I bought it to build my prenatal teaching library and am disappointed. The pictures are dated but the poses are classic. There are also poses for postnatal.

"If you want to maintain independence in the era of large institutions, you are going to need good tools." So begins Rheingold's introduction to The Millenium Whole Earth Catalog, a compendium of reviews of books, magazines, tools, software, video- and audiotapes, organizations, and services plus ideas on whole systems, sustainability, community, health, sex, household, family, technology, politics, communications, travel, livelihood, and learning. 3 out of 5 stars Neat To Read But Probably Not That Useful In Real Life.......2005-12-16

I don't know how useful this book actually is to anyone, but it makes for interesting reading, if for no other reason than because it shows that an organized grass roots countercultural "underground" is as alive and well in America today as it was when the first of these books came out back in the days of hippiedom's original flowering two generations ago.

1 out of 5 stars if possible, I'd get this book less than one star.......2003-02-03

In comparison to "Whole Earth Catalog:Access to Tools" the Millenium Edition was - at least to my tastes - horrifyingly bad. "Access to Tools" presented information to solve problems. The Millenium Edition seemed to be more about winning arguments, and how to repair your local

Reading about how aging yuppies want to fix a neighborhood block to their tastes isn't worth 1 dime of my money. I feel disappointed and deeply cheated that I bought this tawdry book.

5 out of 5 stars great resource for to be teachers!.......2005-10-10

Being a 2nd year early childhood education student at Miami University (in Ohio!) this book is very helpful in many ways. My first time reading it bored me to tears because it all seemed like common sense but reading the DAP section for 3-5 year olds was very interesting. I had done 2 weeks field expereince at a preschool and could compare what was developmentally approraite in the classroom I was in. Plus it was an excellent tool when going to do my assignments!
My professor claims that this is an excellent tool in helping us prepare to be teachers and I agree...we can relate what is in the book to our classrooms in the future. Plus for anyone out there wanting to be a mom it is a great resource as well!

5 out of 5 stars Needed by all childcare professionals.......2005-01-23

5 out of 5 stars Most Influential Piece of Early Childhood Writing Since '60s.......2004-05-10

Every single book that I have read on early childhood education cites this book in some way for some reason. By thumbing through it, anyone can probably understand why. Dr. Bredekamp and Dr. Copple present the most transprent how-to manual ever for distinguising between proper and improper teaching methods in an early childhood classroom. EVERY early childhood teacher should have this book. It is affectionately known as "The Bredekamp book", "Developmentally Appropriate Practice", and "DAP".

Book Description

This book brings together the best information available on developing an integrated, holistic approach to curriculum and instruction for children age three to eight in such formal group settings as childcare, pre-school, and the early elementary grades. Concentrating as much on the “how” of curriculum development as on the “what and why,” the authors present numerous examples and practical, research-based guidelines—organized by developmental domain—for translating theory into best practice that accommodates age-appropriateness, individual differences, and social and cultural diversity. For childcare, pre-school, and early elementary grades instructors.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Trumps Peterson's Book By An Edge Due To Balanced Presentation.......2006-02-21

Once again, Prentice Hall displays why it remains a superforce in creating textbooks: its balanced and accessible research-based comprehensiveness. As with my first Chemistry book in high school, I believe this book possesses everything you will need to know about early childhood curriculum.

The former champion, in my opinion,--Evelyn Peterson's A PRACTICAL GUIDE OT EARLY CHILDHOOD CURRICULUM--gets bested here because this text presents, in a well-understood way, what Peterson's book also did well: present pratical explanations. This texts gets the slight edge because the authors ably worked in all the research and citations relevant to the concepts without overloading a teacher's mind with scholarship. It's a difficult feat that I have only seen one other time in an ECE text (J.A. Brewer's INTRODUCTION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION).

Here's where you really get a smashing deal: this book will give you all you need to grasp the curriculum topics on the PRAXIS II: Education of the Young Child test.

The New Champion of Early Childhood Curriculum college textbooks. Take a bow and a victory lap.

    Book Description

Developmentally Appropriate Practice: Curriculum and Development in Early Education, 3e is a thoughtful and comprehensive reference that is now even more effective with the addition of several new features and enhanced content. The book takes a topical approach and assumes some basic child development knowledge/experience, and is intended as a guide for thoughtful consideration of classroom and caregiver practices. In the first section, developmentally appropriate practice is discussed and explored, including an in-depth, extended section on the theory and research of play. Subsequent sections address environments such as physical, social/emotional, and cognitive/language. The coverage of these important environments is comprehensive and individually addresses appropriate practice for all early childhood age groups. The fifth section moves into a discussion of making changes for the teachers and caregivers and how to gain support for those changes. Well-known curriculum approaches are also explored in-depth, allowing the reader to understand how these approaches fit into the principles of developmentally appropriate practice. Some new features include ?What Would You Do?? and ?Think About It? sections that encourage further thought and discussion, as well as current reference and reading suggestions to allow the reader to continue the learning process on their own.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Handbook for Reaching Employees.......2003-10-12

Today's employees want to be informed, included, and even consulted regarding corporate decisions, directions, activities, and issues. If they are not connected with their employer, people will leave the organization to seek employment opportunities where they can be more engaged. Anything and everything a company can do to relate more closely with the people who matter will make a difference.

An experienced corporate communicator, Holtz emphasizes that internal communication in a company is much more than just publishing a newsletter or magazine for employees. The behaviors communicators influence are "the ones that would support the company bottom-line business efforts." There's more to this process than reporting birthdays, babies, brides, and bowling scores. Employees must be reached with compelling, understandable, and credible messages that are easy to access, grasp, and absorb.

This easy-to-read handbook explores a number of facets of employee communications. Readers will learn about the types of communications, planning, and traditional communication tools. More modern approaches of online communication are discussed, along with insights into the sustainability of the communication process. Holtz devotes chapters to special situations such as communicating bad news, and change. Chapters on organizing and budgeting, as well as measuring the value of communication, provide some professional tools that will be useful to the reader.

The value of the book is enhanced by appendices on messaging policies and resources, as well as a good index. The text, written in a relatively conversational style, is seasoned with case studies from two fictitious companies-one that does communication right, and one that misses the mark. The book is current and is designed with enough white space to make it comfortable to read and benefit from.

While I might have organized the chapters a bit differently, that's an easy task for a wise reader to accomplish. The content is here-valuable for the newcomer to the field, the seasoned professional who could benefit from a refresher, and the manager or executive who just needs to learn and appreciate a little more about how to communicate more effectively with a workforce that's hungry for information and interaction.

This concept keeps kids interested. They want to figure out the little words and the big words created by the letters, so it's an excellent one for phonics. If you already use Open Court, it would be a good supplement. There is some prep time involved in writing and cutting the letters, unless you're smarter than me and use die-cut letters from a bulletin board!!

5 out of 5 stars This book belongs in the effective advocate's briefcase........2002-04-06

Free and Appropriate Public Education (5th Edition), by Rud and Ann Turnbull, is the defining legal resource for all special education advocates.

The Turnbull's, who co-founded and co-direct the Beach Center on Families with Disability at the University of Kansas, take the cumbersome legal process that is special education and turn it into a powerful reader friendly guide to understanding special education advocacy. The book has three parts, Introduction to the Law, the six principles of IDEA, and enforcing the law. The 5th edition is updated to include the 1997 IDEA amendments.

The first part of the book places the special education struggle into an historical context, preparing the reader for the principles at the heart of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act [IDEA]. The Turnbull's tell the reader where the law comes from, why it is needed and explains its power in the special education process. The reader learns what law is and how to make it work for individual students. A reader who understands why IDEA was needed in the first place will be better armed to advocate for a free appropriate public education for all students. This historical framework alone makes the book invaluable.

The second part of the Turnbull's book focuses on the six principles of the IDEA: zero reject (including discipline); nondiscriminatory evaluation; appropriate education (including positive behavior support); least restrictive environment (access to general education); due process (including mediation); and parent participation. The Turnbull's leave no stone unturned in detailing what families of children with disabilities have a right to expect from school administrators and teachers. The first time reader is thoroughly educated to the law and children with disabilty. The return reader and practicing advocate is given sophisticated information directly applicable to specific issues. The Turnbulls color each prinicple with the ink of history and the script of practical reality.

Rud and Ann Turnbull's final section tells parents how to use the law to obtain a truly free appropriate education for children with special needs. They give the reader a straightforward, no nonsense discussion of how IDEA is enforced. The authors give equal emphasis to hardball legal mechanisms and emerging alternative dispute resolution practices. A parent or advocate who understands how the law really works is better able to weigh specific choices for specific children.

Free Appropriate Public Education includes comprehensive resources. This 400-page hard cover book includes the 1997 IDEA amendments; glossary; a table of important cases; and extensive excerpts from the three landmark educational rights cases.

This book is ideal for the parent who for whatever reason cannot take advantage of opportunities to attend or participate in special education trainings or conferences. It also is an invaluable resource to those parents and advocates who present training opportunities or direct advocacy to other parents and families. The book is easy to use to refresh one's understanding of specific concepts or procedures. Finally, Free and Appropriate Public Education constantly reminds its readers and users that IDEA belongs to the families and not to the schools. It is not unreasonable for families to ask that IDEA be followed. The Turnbull's have given families a brief case resource which lets them put reason into practice. We heartily recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Every Parent and Educator Should Read This Book.......2001-04-26

This book is a must have for regular education teachers, special education teachers and especially parents of children with any disability or who suspect their child has a disability. It is written with the wisdom, compassion, and insight that only a parent of a child with disabilities could muster.

This book is the LAW for special education and it clearly defines what should be happening in America's schools. I highly recommend it.
