Book Description
"Sacred duty, yadda yadda."
-- Buffy Summers
Buffy the Vampire Slayer has always held an irreverent attitude toward her calling, but ultimately she understands the ramifications of her destiny and is prepared to die to protect the world from Evil. In fact, she has died. Twice.
"I remember the drill. One Slayer dies, another is called."
-- Buffy Summers
It's an ancient tradition, steeped in lore, mythology, and fateful prophecies. Slayerdom consists of a Council of Watchers, a continuum of slayers, an archive of journals, and even a handbook.
"Handbook? What handbook? How come I didn't have a handbook?"
-- Buffy Summers
But first and foremost, it begins with a girl. One girl in all the world. A Chosen One. Now, catch up on other Slayers past and present, in the second short-story collection, Tales of the Slayer, Vol. 2!
"[Another] Slayer? I knew this, 'I'm the only one, I'm the only one,' thing was just an attention getter."
-- Xander Harris
With contributions from Scott Allie, Laura J. Burns and Melinda Metz, Max Allan Collins and Matthew V. Clemens, Greg Cox, Kara Dalkey, Jane Espenson, Rebecca Rand Kirshner, Todd McIntosh, Michael Reaves, and Kristine Kathryn Rusch.

Super Reader.......2007-08-02
An improvement on the last book, this set of stories is bookended by two Buffy tales. Here we have a pirate slayer, a samurai slayer, a slayer that encounters both Springheeled Jack and Dracula, and works with a group of friends.
A little bit more of the fun here, as some of the slayers are more successful, especially one that is a union soldier with the support of a general and his armaments.

Another good book.......2004-09-03
This is the type of book I get a little sad when I get near the end. Must read!
1 of the best Buffy books.......2003-12-12
This is 1 of my favorite books ever, 1 f my favorite story lines was Blood and Brine I loved the pirate slayer. My favorite story in this book was the last 1 where Buffy, Willow, and Xander go back in time I loved the fact that Buffy got to see her mom again and that she wasn't stuck with Dawn for once. I think that when the show brought Dawn on the show and killed Buffy's mom is when they ruint Buffy, from the 5th season on the show slowly went downhill. I HIGHLY recommend this book it is definitely the best Buffy book in the series.
I loved this Book.................2003-09-08
I've always love BTVS because of the Mythology of the Slayer line and how she's Chosen and all of that, I also love the characters and how they're written so well.....But i've often wondered about Past Slayers, what they were like, and what their life was like because as we've always known, Buffy is just one of many Slayers throughout the Years. I loved this Book and how it told about Different Slayers from Different Era's and how that particular Era effected their Duty as the Slayer.
I've seen other Reviews where people ask what good a 'Pirate' Slayer would be and if you really think about it, all of the Vampires that Migrate from country too country more than likely use Ships too Travel in because of the Dark Rooms beneath the Surface, she could stop that from happening.
My Favorite story in this book was probably "Stake out on Rush Street", among a few other's....I also liked the one about the Civil War Slayer and the one about the Slayer who fought Dracula........
I thought it was a very good book and I recommend it to other fans of Buffy and especially Fans of the Buffy Books.
Not as good as the first.......2003-06-25
It felt like it took me forever to finish this book. The stories were not as well written as the first book and it wasn't as interesting. The only highslight stories were Again written by Jane Espenson and Abonmination by Laura J. Burns and Melinda Mertz.
Book Description
For over twenty years The Years Best Science Fiction has been recognized as the best collection of short science fiction writing in the universe and an essential resource for every science fiction fan. In 2005, the original Best of the Best collected the finest short stories from that series and became a benchmark in the SF field. Now, for the first time ever, Hugo Award-winning editor Gardner Dozois sifts through hundreds of stories and dozens of authors who have gone on to become some of the most esteemed practitioners of the form to bring readers the ultimate anthology of short science fiction novels from his legendary series.
Customer Reviews:
superb collection.......2007-03-11
Following up on the first edition of the Best of the Best (short story oriented), Gardner Dozois fills the second collection with classic novellas, starting with the fantastic "Sailing to Byzantium" by Silverberg. The entries speak for themselves as sci fi fans will recognize most if not all the contributions and many will have been read previously. The entries are Walter Jon Williams' "Surfacing", Joe Haldeman's "The Hemingway Hoax", James Patrick Kelly's "Mr. Boy", Nancy Kress's "Beggars in Spain", Michael Swanwick's "Griffin's Egg", Frederik Pohl's "Outnumbering the Dead", Ursula K. Le Guin's "Forgiveness Day", Maureen F. McHugh's "The Cost to Be Wise", Greg Egan's "Oceanic", Ian McDonald's "Tendeleo's Story", Ian R. MacLeod's "New Light on the Drake Equation", and Alastair Reynolds's "Turquoise Days",. The stories run the gamut of the genre with a few crossing into fantasy, but what they share are strong story lines with believable characters bringing to life questions of humanity's place in the universe. The only question for readers is to pay or not to pay in light of having read most before as this compilation is top rate.

Everyone should have the whole set.......2007-08-30
Okay - Where else are you going to be able to read The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand in 5 minutes? Granted, you lose some of the nuances, and finer details which often times make a book a novel, but if you haven't read these classics, don't really have the time to read the whole novel, and you feel you've missed out as a result -- then this lexicon of classics is for you.
GABB has listings for everything from religions to quotations to one-sitting readings of classic summaries.
Highly recommended.
The BEST book.......2007-02-04
Quite possibly the best kept secret on shelves of bookstores today!
I absolutely agree 100% with the reviewer who wrote, A Wall Of Books In The Palms Of Your Hands" . I couldn't have said it better. A joy to read. Especially when I'm not feeling well or traveling, I put this book in my messenger bag and get lost in its engaging summaries of all manner of famous books.
I also love the quotes sections. LOVE IT.
Too good to be true.......2005-09-12
Wow, Being a Python fan since I first saw it in 1976 I have followed and seen every thing done. So, when reading the account of Eric's "Greedy Bastard Tour" I came to the end where he describes how he brought this idea for a musical on Broadway to life, I instantly had to know all I could. Then it happened. I was blessed to watch the Tony Awards live, and he did it;, This little guy brought the heart and soul of Monty Python's Flying Circus to life and won the Tony for Best Musical. This soundtrack is one of the best I have heard. Fantastically mastered, and, well, Monty Python through and through. Classic scenes from "The Grail" come to life as music. "I'm not Dead yet" and "Camelot" are just plain great. But, the new additions are the shining light. "Our song That Goes Like This", I think, is the best number in a musical I have ever heard...challenging Tommy and JCS. All I can say....BUY THIS!
A Wall Of Books In The Palms Of Your Hands.......2003-12-12
I read a rather snooty review of Book One and wondered why an individual like that would bother to read such a book as this? Well, I am not like that person. For me, this series of books is wonderful. Most of all, it satisfies my need for a wide span of general knowledge and also of trivia. There is a personal satisfaction in knowing a little something about a whole lot of things. If you are reading this review, you are the type of person that has heard of most of these summary titles but never read most of them. Maybe you skimmed it in high school or college and wrote a book report on it. Or, the title was on your college "reading list." Maybe your dad read that book when he was a little boy. Read it now! Or, at least the summary. Besides book summaries, there are lots of other little bits of data. I read incessantly and I have used these book summaries to decide on which books I want to read in toto. Perfect for people that expect to wait in an airport or a doctor's office, or outside the mall for your spouse. I even bought a book cover that conceals that it is a "Bathroom Book".
Even Better Than The Original.......1998-08-01
It's just brimming with humor and drama, hundreds more of the world's best books trimmed down to easy-to-read two-page summaries. Read "War and Peace" "The Stand," even The Bible in twelve minutes! Dozens of literary classics, as well as classic plays, operas, world religions, amusing quotes, anecdotes, philosophy, trivia galore, Shakespeare, Salinger, Confucious, and every other important author around can be found here. Wonderful for leisure reading, brushing up on your cultural literacy, preparing for a movie, or refreshing your memory about a book you read a long time ago. This book is for any occasion.

Book Description
This second volume continues the publishing program to collect the stories of Science Fiction Grand Master Jack Williamson.
Drawn from such classic pulp magazines as Astounding Stories, Wonder Stories, and Amazing Stories, this volume features ten tales, four never published in book form, including novel-length adventure, The Stone from the Green Star. Also included are Williamson's letters and contest entries to the editors of the SF magainzes of the early 30's.
The book is smythe-sewn, bound in full cloth, and printed on acid-neutral paper, with full-color endpapers reproducing the original pulp magazine cover art.
With a foreword by noted writer Harlan Ellison, Wolves of Darkness imparts the sense of wonder from the early years of American Science Fiction and continues the documentation of Williamson's unparalleled career.
Customer Reviews:
Great tales from the Golden Age of pulps!.......2001-06-05
Jack Williamson has the skill to capture one's interest right from the first sentence of a story and hold it, drawing one in to read on and discover the mystery and wonder that follow. He has a very visual style and in the title story Wolves of Darkness he provides a scientific explanation for lycanthropy instead of the usual supernatural rationale. He also describes a process that sounds very similar to the way that micro-processors are made today! And this was in 1932, some 20 years before even the transistor was developed, let alone micro-chips! When this story was written even the vacuum tube was still a rather new thing.
Williamson writes in the pulp fiction style of the day, which is somewhat repetitive and tiresome at times, but since the going rate for a pulp magazine story back then was a half cent a word or less, it's understandable why an author would "flesh out" a tale as much as possible! Even so, these stories still hold up well.
This is a handsome volume, well-made, with colorful reproductions on the endpapers of the covers of the old pulp magazines in which the stories originally appeared. This book is a must-have for all Jack Williamson fans and all science-fiction/horror fans in general!
Wolves among us and other great tales!.......2001-05-31
This is a handsome book, well-made, with colorful reproductions on the endpapers of the covers of the old pulp magazines in which the stories originally appeared. Some of these grand old pulps can still be found on auction sites and in second-hand book stores, and they're worth collecting, not only for the stories but also for the wonderful illustrations. The quality of this book and the early Jack Williamson tales make this volume worth its rather high price.
I wanted particularly to read the short novelette Wolves of Darkness, because I'd heard it was the precursor werewolf tale to his later classic Darker Than You Think, and I was not disappointed! Williamson has the skill to capture one's interest right from the first sentence of a story and hold it, drawing one in to read on and discover the mystery and wonder that follow. This book is a must-have for all Jack Williamson fans and all science-fiction/horror fans in general!
Customer Reviews:
Great Short Stories.......2000-04-04
I had to read several stories from this book for school, and the ones which I read were innovative and entertaining. Originally published in the 50's, this anthology of classic short stories is definatley worth the money!
Book Description
The second of a planned 10 volumes that will reprint all Sturgeon's short fiction covers his prolific output during 1940 and 1941, after which he suffered five years of writer's block. Showcasing Sturgeon's early penchant for fantasy, the first six selections include whimsical ghost stories, such as "Cargo," in which a World War II munitions freighter is commandeered by invisible, peace-loving fairies. With the publication of his enduring SF classic, "Microcosmic God," Sturgeon finally found his voice, combining literate, sharp-edged prose with fascinating speculative science while recounting the power struggle between a brilliant scientist, who creates his own miniature race of gadget makers, and his greedy banker. Voice found or not, every one of the stories here is readable and entertaining today because of Sturgeon's singular gifts for clever turns of phrase and compelling narrative. As Samuel R. Delaney emphasizes in an insightful introduction, Sturgeon was the single most influential SF writer from the 1940s through the 1960s.
Customer Reviews:
Now he's hit his stride.......2000-03-24
In this volume Sturgeon is beginning to hit his stride. Some of these are among the best short stories in SF (e.g. Microcosmic God, Shottle Bop).
In the earlier stories, Sturgeon was still trying to find his ideal voice. Much of the prose was forced, and some rather simple plot devices (especially irony) were common. In this volume, though, he is coming into his own.
Brilliant!.......1999-06-07
The best part of this collection is that he only got better later . . . this is only the second volume and just about every story here is a keeper and the really great ones will stick in your head forever. "The Microcosmic God", "Cargo", "Jumper" and all that type are nothing less than entertaining and at the same time showing you Sturgeon's highly sensative glimpses into the human heart. This guy cared about everyone and understood what made people tick, while some of his stuff might be considered formulaic still at this point, he can't be a genius everytime out and seeing everything in the proper order and context allows you to see his evolution. This entire ten volume series is a blessing, there aren't many writers who we get the chance to see them develop and there aren't that many who deserve this chance, all in all Sturgeon is at the top of the list. Cheers to whoever thought of this idea. Make sure these always stay in print!
One of the all-time best short stories!.......1998-11-28
Okay, I have never read this book, but I would like to comment on the short story, Microcosmic God as it has always been one of my favorites. My dad told it as a bed time story when I was younger and I've actually read it several times since then. The story involves a brilliant scientist named Kidder, who has absorbed the sum total of man's knowledge and is frustrated by the fact that he will not live long enough to witness future breakthroughs in technology. The logical solution of course, is for him to create his own race of beings (called Neoterics), with a faster metabolism and shorter lifespan (about 12 days, I think), so that he can observe their evolution and eventually learn from their discoveries. It is truly amazing that Sturgeon is able to pull off this level of scientific arrogance in a realitively succinct and believable manner (after all it is a SHORT story). Can the creation of intelligent life possibly be so simple? Hardly, but I was willing to swallow the premise, because the idea is fascinating and I truly wanted to know how it would turn out. I can easily understand why Kidder would go to such lengths in order to glimpse the future of mankind. Of course, the story also includes an evil banker, Conant, who wants to exploit Kidder's inventions (such as a pill that cures the common cold) for profit, but by far the most absorbing aspect of the plot is the Neoterics themselves. Kidder keeps them in a large covered atrium (they are extremely small) and observes them through a magnifier. While human rights activists would obviously protest Kidder's treatment of the Neoterics (in one instance he lowers the roof of the atrium steadily over a period of time, causing widespead distruction and panic, and waits for them to create a support system out of tinfoil) one can't help being impressed by their resourcefulness and the collective way they respond to every threat. Kidder creates a written language for the Neoterics and begins communicating w/them. It is soon apparent that they believe him to be God. I don't want to ruin the outcome of the story, but I would definitely recommend this as a quick read for anyone, not just science fiction lovers. It explores the themes of faith and mortality in very original way.

Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Alfred Bester, and Ray Bradbury.
Customer Reviews:
Good for exposure..........2003-09-07
...to older authors. If you read Gardner Dozois' anthology, you get a lot of the new writers, but this is where I first read some of Bester's work--great stuff.
Nice sampler for a beginning SF reader........2003-03-25
I'm the first to review this book. Hope this will be helpful to would be buyers.
This book is not very interesting for an advanced SF reader. Why?
Writers featured in this book are Asimov, Bester, Bradbury, Clarke and Norton. Good and popular writers, but their work is still very easy to come by. Want stories of Asimov? Buy his two-volume collection. Same for Bradbury, who has a very nice one-volume collection, and for Clarke and Bester. The stories in this anthology will tell you that these writers deserve to have a single-author collection on your bookshelves. Why buy stories you already own?
For starters then. Buy this book. Some stories in here are classics, others are mere filler. They point out to you their writers' vision. Still, it's your decision. The truth: There are better anthologies out there.
Whatever your decision, do check out the first item in this series. It's somewhat better.
I appreciate this series. A good Idea. You won't throw your money away.
