Book Description
Published in chronological order, with extensive story and bibliographic notes, this series not only provides access to stories that have been out of print for years, but gives them a historical and social context. Series editors Scott Conners and Ronald S. Hilger excavated the still-existing manuscripts, letters and various published versions of the stories, creating a definitive "preferred text" for Smith's entire body of work. This first volume of the series, brings together 25 of his fantasy stories, written between 1925 and 1930, including such classics as "The Abominations of Yondo," "The Monster of the Prophecy," "The Last Incantation" and the title story.

A Literary Treasure.......2007-09-12
This first volume in what promises to be the definitive collection of short fiction by Clark Ashton Smith is nothing short of a literary treasure. For those who have previously had to satisfy their craving for Klarkashtonia by seeking it out in scattered and hard-to-obtain tomes, The Collected Fantasies of Clark Ashton Smith is a blessing nonpareil. Do yourself a favor and get it while it lasts.
Indispensable: Smith's fantasies restored to their full splendor.......2007-08-15
As established here and reinforced by the second volume, all five books in this series are essential to anyone interested in Smith's work and literate fantasy as a whole. Connors and Hilger have followed earlier textual studies by Donald Sidney-Fryer, Steve Behrends, and others with extensive studies of their own to restore as much of the glory to Smith's texts as is currently possible - and what glory! Smith is one of the few fantasists capable not only of creating multiple fantasy cultures, but with investing each of those worlds with its own distinct atmosphere, tone, and use of language. Many earlier versions of these texts toned down the richness, eroticism, and grotesquerie of these stories in order to appeal to what Smith's editors deemed was acceptable to the lowest-common-denominator among its readership. Scores of deletions, simplifications, bowdlerizations, and other alterations which have served to remove the sheen from these works have here been corrected through painstaking attention to all available manuscripts and correpondence. Here, at long last, is Smith in all his mordant, coruscating splendor. If one considers all of this, along with intelligent introductory material; alternate endings; unpedantic notes to each story detailing its composition, publication history, and its place within the larger context of Smith's work; as well as Jason Van Hollander's inspired integration of Smith and his sculptures into the macabre and affectionate cover art; Night Shade and these editors have presented to all lovers of fantasy an edition of the master's prose fiction which will serve as the benchmark for many years to come.
Smith at last.......2007-04-19
What happened to Lovecraft with S.T. Joshi and David E. Schultz, or to Robert E. Howard with Patrice Louinet, has just happened to Clark Ashton Smith. Two long devoted scholars, Scott Connors and Ron Hilger, have spent years editing this definitive edition of the collected tales and short stories (some of them being in fact extended prose poems of an incredibly bewitching quality as the CAS scholar Donald Sidney-Fryer has often pointed out) of Clark Ashton Smith. This is what any serious CAS fan has been waiting for.
First Volume of the Ultimate Smith Collection.......2007-04-08
One cannot imagine a better representation of the fantastic fiction of the late Clark Ashton Smith than that to be found in this and the forthcoming volumes in this collection. Connors and Hilger have tirelessly restored Smith's stories to their original form after comparing the texts of holographic manuscripts, published versions, and even bits and pieces from Smith's personal correspondence. The stories are being published herein in chronological order with notes for each tale and more (including an alternate ending for one tale that was deemed too "racy" at the time it was written).
The sturdy and handsome library binding, excellent typesetting, and beautiful dustcover top off this first of what cannot help but be the definitive Smith collection.
Fans of Smith's fantasmagorical tales, this collection tops all others.
Literary Justice at last.......2007-04-01
Superbly printed and bound the words of CAS here receive literary justice. This first volume of a planned set of five looks to be the definitive edition. Highly recommended.

Good enough to purchase twice!.......2006-05-04
I came across this book in a used bookstore on a college campus. I purchased it without more than a few quick page flips to see the type of content. It didn't really matter, though as Twain is my favorite author. The "student" who owned this book previously underlined several passages extensively, and sloppily at that. If they had spent time reading Twain instead of trying to underline every phrase, it might have made a difference. On the other hand, perhaps they were blind, and wanted to underling the important phrases. It makes half of the book virtually illegible. So I purchased it new from amazon.com, along with the first volume, which I am sure will be as delightful.
This is a wonderful book (reading the legible half), and is now one of my favorites. Twain's essays and humorous bits are hilarious, and provide an excellent view into his opinions and life. His piece on cigars is hilarious, and the Adam's Diary selection is a must read.
What a Character!.......2005-06-19
I've haven't even read one of Twain's novels, which no doubt makes me a heathen in the literary world, but I really enjoyed this collection of essays. Gosh, I would have loved to meet this guy. He seems as obnoxious as a professional wrestler, but has an uncanny talent for being right.
My favorite essay is, "A Cure For the Blues," where Twain endlessly rags on a popular author of the time. The guy may still be popular, I don't know, but Twain had plenty of reason to rag on him, and I really do consider Twain's critique to be a cure for the blues. It's hilarious.
Mark Twain means "Deep Enough".......2001-07-18
This book is a joy to read. Though not all the short works contained within are "classics", you will find satire, history, editorials, mischief, slices-of-life, without knowing by the title of any given work what you'll really be getting in the pages that follow (all part of Twain's desire to "stir the pot" and "zing" his readers)... As you will see from this book, Twain is not just a writer of the Mississippi River, but of Washington D.C., the Western U.S., Saloons, Trains, Parades, and much more. You won't be sorry with this high quality book.
Mark Twain at his best.......2000-07-15
Mark Twain is well known for his Mississippi Novels and Historical Romances but it's on his Tales and Sketches where you can find the commical genious in him. It's in my opinion that it's an age span wich makes you like the most Tom Sawyer (8-12), The Prince and the Pauper (13-16) or The Diary of Adam and Eve (18-) and yet, in his complete tales you may find contents of interest for all kinds of readers. And you will never find a better edition than the one that Library of America has to offer. Hardcover, cloth wrapping and alk. paper makes the reading an extra pleasure over the one Mark Teain already gives you. Love Twain and love the edition.
Book Description
Written over a period of more than half a century, these stories reflect every aspect of Tolstoy's art and personality. They cover his experiences as a soldier in the Caucasus, his married life, his passionate interest in the peasantry, his cult of truth adn simplicity, and, above all, his growing preoccupation with religion. Ranging in scope from novellas like The Kreutzer Sonata and Hadji Murad to folk-tales only a few pages long, they provide a marvelous opportunity to become closely acquainted with Russia's great novelist. Aylmer and Louise Maude's classic translations are supplemented by new translations by Nigel J. Cooper of six stories, including two that have never before appeared in English.
Customer Reviews:
Tolstoy's Collected Shorter Fiction-Vol. 2.......2006-02-23
This is an excellent translation of some of Tolstoy's shorter fiction. The binding is also excellent, which makes this particular collection a wonderful gift to someone who enjoys Tolstoy, or a delicious treasure to savor for oneself. For those who can be intimidated by the longer (much longer) works, this is a fine introduction to Tolstoy's voice and worldview. I recommend this edition unreservedly.
TOLSTOY, THE IMMORTAL STORYTELLER!!!!!.......2005-09-05
What a beautiful set of volumes!! All of Leo Tolstoy's great, great shorter works all in one two volume set! Leo Tolstoy was a perfect storyteller. When you look at a photo or portrait of Tolstoy in his later years, you see that lovable, wise old man who, when he is not helping others, sits on an old chair in the corner of the tavern, attracting all that pass by with his beautiful tales. He has touched many with his two great novels, War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1878), he has touched even more with his wonderful short stories. When you start reading these lovely short stories, you can just see that lovable image of the wise old Tolstoy telling a story, with his shaggy, long white beard, and his friendly eyes with a laughing fire in them burning out from beneath the bushy eyebrows smiling down at you, a small child, laughing on his knee.
He was the perfect novelist, reveared by many, equally great and legendary. In his time, Dostoyevsky called him, "The greatest living novelist." Virginia Woolf referred to Tolstoy as follows, "There remains the greatest of all novelists, for what else can we call the author of War and Peace?!"
Tolstoy's short stories usually have a moral in it such as the lovely short story, "Where Love is, God is." In that, there is a lonely old cobbler named Martin who finds God in the good deeds he does and is reminded of God's love for man.
This two volume set is not perfect as it does not have Tolstoy's early 1862 masterpiece, The Cossacks. I guess that was just too big to fit into the Collected SHORTER Fiction.
That is only a minor quibble. The beauty and marvel frothing and bubbling from the other stories in this precious set dwarf that complaint and make this reviewer forget of having even thought about mentioning it at all.
Buy this set. You will treasure it for the rest of your days and will always look forward to pulling out one of these two volumes off your shelf, blowing off the dust and partaking in the magic of Tolstoy, the wise old storyteller.
A NICE ACCESSIBLE EDITION OF TOLSTOY'S SHORT FICTION.......2001-10-03
This is a really handsome book and with it's companion (vol. 2) makes a great addition to world lit. on your bookshelf. Some stories are novellas and some are only a page or two long but they're all artfully written and come from old established translations from late 19th century/early 20th. For anyone who wants to tackle WAR AND PEACE or ANNA KARENINA they should read a little of Tolstoy's more accessible short works and they can't go wrong here. My only complaint (and this goes for all Everyman series books) is that the text printed on the other side is annoyingly visible making reading a bit of a chore. This is a major blunder for any series of books purporting to capture the world's best literature but if you can ignore this (or at least get used to it) this would be a smart purchase because the price is right (if you buy it here).

Take a Trip to Another Time.......2006-03-27
I got this book as a gift, and my first thought was "how good can a set of sci-fi stories from 1928 be?" Needless to say, I thought this would be a boring book. But I was wrong. It's a trip to another time. One one hand, it's a trip into a past that was still filled with the art of imagination where there were no boundaries. It's also a trip into the future, some of has transpired and some that never will (at least not like as described in some of these stories).
Nonetheless, there is a quality of writing in these stories that makes them worthy of preserving. Mr. Williamson excels at the short story. He is able to quickly make the reader care about his characters, and the plot lines enage the reader. Even though many of the stories are "dated" and come out the old pulps, they remain entertaining, engaging, and fun. I enjoyed this book so much that I ended up buying the other books from this series.
If this is what you are looking for, you found it.......2002-09-15
These are definitely stories of more historical than literary interest. Jack Williamson is an amazing writer, but also an amazingly prolific writer, and let's face it, they can't all be gems. These were stories produced by the word for the pulps, and it shows. I will buy and read the other volumes in this beautifully produced series, but this one at least would make slow going for anyone not a dedicated fan of the author and/or the era.
Sci-Fi they way they used to write it........2000-12-03
These stories are from 1928-1931 and appeared mostly in Amazing Stories magazine, an early "pulp" rag of which the only survivor is the still-available Weird Tales (Quarterly). Jack Williamson was in his early 20s when he wrote these, and the tales are full of the passion, excitement, wonder and naivete of a young man. These are "space operas" in the truest sense -- fantastic landscapes, shakey science, high adventure, and beautiful girls (who seem to always appear out of nowhere, for no reason other than to titilate; they often don't speak English, but they're eager to learn!). Not literature, but who cares. I found this book so entertaining, I bought the other two currently available.
I wish the original illustrations could have been included -- the covers of the original magazines are cleverly used to decorate the endpapers though. Also, the typesetting is not up to standard. ITC Garamond is not ideal for text setting (there are no true small caps, text figures or ligitures available, and the X-height is HUGE), and there are double spaces between sentences. I can forgive these shortcomings because they are not a serious impediment to the enjoyment of the material, and the stories are a real joy to read.
The titles of the stories on offer are: The Metal Man, The Girl from Mars, The Alien Intelligence, The Second Shell, The Green Girl, The Cosmic Express, The Birth of a New Republic, The Prince of Space, and The Meteor Girl.
The publisher, who is doing a real service by preserving these gems, says the series will total about seven volumes. I'm the first in line.
Book Description
This final classic collection reveals Somerset Maugham’s unique talent for exposing and exploring the bitter realities of human relationships in tales of love, infidelity, passion and prejudice. The stories range from “The Lotus Eater” where a man envisions a life of bliss in the Mediterranean, to the astringent tales of “The Outstation” and “The Back of Beyond” in Malaya and South East Asia.
Customer Reviews:
Great.......2006-03-15
Somerset is an amazing writer whose words flowed so freely and expressively it makes you want to cry. This book of shorts is classic Maugham and un-put-downable. You'll love it.
Fall or accomplishment ?.......2005-08-24
The story" Fall of Edward Barnard" is a confrontation between what is called'the Civilized World' and the indigenous, the savage, the primitive world. Edward, thankful to a relative already fascinated by the beauties of the islands around tahiti, had a one life opportunity to have a very introspective reflexion about the meaning of his life. Sent from Chicago for two years, he will delay his return and the promise he made to his bride Isabelle. Why ? Because facing the natural beauty, almost thunderstruck by such simplicity, he wonders what the use of all this hustle and constant striving in our cities which are all but stones with ceasless turmoil. After a unsuccessful beginning in working, he chose a simple life based on beauty, truth and goodness. His thoughts reach the universal when asking himself ( throughout the author's philosophy ) why do we come into the world for to hurry to an office and work hour after hour
Collected Short Stories Volume One W Somerset Maugham.......2005-03-16
Thirty short stories by W. Somerset Maugham including "Rain" which is about a prudish missionary and a prostitute and "The Three Fat Women of Antibes" which is an ironic story about self-denial and greed.
Essential for the Maugham reader.......2004-10-05
I came to know Maugham through his novels, especially The Razor's Edge, Of Human Bondage, and Cakes and Ale. I purchased this collection not knowing what to expect. The stories are character focused, at times incredibly witty and amusing, at times melancholy and near heart-breaking. As in his novels, Maugham has the ability to make the reader see what is not written. Highlights include The Rain, a commentary on the work of missionaries, and The Pool, one of the saddest shorts ever written. Others, such as The Three Fat Women of Antibbes, will probably make you laugh out loud. A first rate collection.
The Writer's Writer.......2002-12-22
I've only just discovered the wonders of W. Somerset Maugham. This was the first of his works that I have ever read, and it was an absolute pleasure. There are other reviewers on these pages who are more knowledgeable and better critics than I, so I am just going to tell you how much I enjoyed this particular compilation. Every story was a treasure. Every single character was so well drawn, that for the first time in a long time I found myself empathising with these people, loving them, hating them, lamenting for them and genuinely caring about what happened to them.
Every story started off in a fairly prosaic, nondescript fashion. But every story had me hooked by at least the first page. Sometimes they unfolded as funny stories, other were tales about how an individual's world had changed catastrophically. I never got bored, and the writing was never predictable, Maugham always had a surprisingly poetical observation to make that would send me into raptures. This is truly a writer of sensitivity and talent. I can honestly say that I have been searching for a writer of this calibre for a long time. If you care anything at all about the amazing stories that ordinary, little people have, then read this book and Maugham's other works. He truly is a master.

Customer Reviews:
Great later shorts by Robert Silverberg.......2000-07-24
Robert Silverberg is one of the best writers of SF -- ever. From 1968 or so to the mid-70's Silverberg probably had the best five year run of any SF writer in producing great work. Novels like Nightwings, Dying Inside, The Book of Skulls, and A Time of Changes, along with shorts from that period like "Good News from the Vatican"... Even Heinlein never had a straight run of great work in one five of six year period. Heck, the only similar run of great work in SF was happening almost at the same time in U.K. Le Guin's work. And this is not to leave folks like Ellison and Niven and resurent Fred Pohl's, Isaac Asimov's and Aurthur Clarke's out either. The late 60's and early 70's should really be considered the Golden Age of SF when we look back now. And it was Silverberg was was leading the pack then.
This book contains much of his good short story work from the 1980's and early 1990's. There is some good to almost great work still coming from the Typewriter/Word Processor of Silveberg. His shorts and novellas like "Mulipules", "Sailing to Byzantuim", "House of Bones" and "Enter a Soldier. Later:Enter another" are all of high caliber.
I orginally found this book in the library when I was going thru what I was catching up on SF. As soon as I have read it I wanted to own it. But I found it was out of print. We'll... It took a while, but I finally found it. And I have taken great care of it ever since.
I highly recommend this book, as well as anything else by Robert Silverberg.
Great collection of stories commented by the author.......1997-03-08
Some stories featured show a very strong writting fiber in Mr. silverberg, some are really among the best short science fiction stories I have read, the author also shares briefly his view on each story

Customer Reviews:
The Sniper Strikes Again . . . and Again.......2001-09-27
O'Flaherty is one of the more gifted short story writers in contemporary fiction, regardless of geography. The life he bring to Irish fiction, though, is incredible. O'Flaherty is a master of sparse writing, using as few words as possible to carry out the events of the story. He lets the reader fill in any blanks he or she wishes and does not mind letting readers draw conclusions and imagine "the rest of the story." His classic story "The Sniper" is a perfect example of this tactic. O'Flaherty provides no background information, aside from a very brief mention of the Irish conflict and the IRA (the sniper is a Republican). The action is quick and concise, allowing for an abrupt, ambiguous, and unsettling ending. He can and does write about more than just snipers, and the previously unpublished stories provide a nice glimpse into O'Flaherty's entire scope of knowledge, experience, and insights. This collection may lift O'Flaherty into the elite company of short story writers who have overshadowed him in the past. There aren't many, but this volume will lessen that number.

A Great Deal, for James lovers and newbies.......2000-05-29
This is a tremendous book - some of the greatest stories ever written, attractively packaged and reasonably priced. These are not really "short stories", as most of them are longer than 50 pages, and they all require careful attention, but the effort is well worth it. While some are better than others, there is not a weak story in the book.

My kids love this!.......2007-02-05
This audio has really kept my 3- and 6-year-old entertained! They love to listen to it - especially in the car! The narrator is really good, using slightly different voices for each character. It's especially nice that my older child can follow along with the books while listening. I wish there were more books on tapes for kids. It really lets them use their imagination.
