Still love Calvin and Hobbes; read it every day for years when it came out.
A perfect melange of adult and kid perspective, this strip will remind you of how you were as a kid. I was definitely Calvin, minus Hobbes. I've got the report cards to prove it.
This edition is worth getting for adults, for the quality of the printing and care in the binding. For kids I'd say get used copies of the big paperbacks; cheaper and less worrisome when your little devils inevitably tear it apart from reading it over and over.
Right up there with Doonesbury and Bloome County as a modern comic strip classic.

A Great Discovery.......2007-09-23

As a foreigner, living in England, I was introduced to Calvin and Hobbes by a friend, Rod Patten of Austin TX.
Firstly I trawled the websites, but now I have this three volume combined edition. Anytime I'm a little low or bored, out come C&H.
The humor and draftsmanship are both superb.
I can thoroly recommend this book to anyone with a g.s. of h.

After seeing the movie, I was blown away. It was truly a unique experience and so I decided to read the graphic novels from whence it was spawned.

What a treat! Frank Miller is a rare talent and the books are difficult to put down once you pick them up. Of course these books are for adults but you will not be disappointed when you read them.

The best comics i've read!!.......2007-03-27

Ok, i'm assuming you know a bit about sin city, so i'll simply say, these books are awesome. I just love the way it's written from the main character's point of view, and how they narrate the story. The drawings are excellent too. Very stylish, almost completely black and white, with the most amazing silouhette pictures. The set is amazing. Decent size books, each is around 200 pages. 7 books all up. The only thing lacking is a box to put them in. But great value for the complete set of the most captivating comics i've ever read.

Also, if you like Max Payne, these comics are very similar in style.
Final note: these comics are not for children, contains violence, sex, and drugs/alcohol abuse.

I was a fan of the movie and wanted to get a flavor of the source material. I'm glad I did. Very entertaining and thought provoking. And the more I read, the more impressed I am at how faithfully the movie translated the story and feel into the movie. Can't wait for the next one!

Not quite "leather" bound -- but a great collection!.......2007-10-09

This is a nicely bound, leatherette covered book. Great to have the series together for easy access. Unlike another reviewer, I really liked the little ribbon marker! Beware though -- it looks a little like a Bible when you carry it around -- ! But I got a kick out of that. I felt the typesetting could have been a little nicer than what looked like just a photocopy of the pages of the original printing. All in all though, I am very happy with the purchase. A really great value.

Most of us who have read and enjoyed the Hitchhikers books (I won't say trilogy) have reached a point in life where getting by on 30 Altarian dollars a day and reading paperbacks has lost some of its charm. I'm in the process of cleaning up my bookshelves by replacing all the battered paperbacks of my youth with real books. I saw this omnibus edition and thought it was the perfect thing. One book with a pleasant appearance to displace a large number of ratty paperbacks. I almost didn't buy it because the price seemed to low. I thought it would sit pleasantly on my bookshelf until I was in the right mood, but I found myself diving right in and enjoying things I remembered and remembering things I forgot. The quality is much higher than I expected. The binding is very solid and the pages supple. I consider this one of my best book purchases of the year.

This book was introduced to me by one of the craziest persons I will ever meet in my life: My good canadian friend Amber. Once I read the first page, I was hooked. It's so incoherent, it makes you see your life in another perspective, plus the new vocabulary it uses makes you want to review your dictionary! If you have an open mind, read this whole book. Only one isn't enough (this book has 4 stories and one novel). Amazing, just amazing

I've always been meaning to read the Hitchhiker series, and now I have it all in one book, and get to look suave and sophisticated reading it with the impressive binding and annoying little ribbon bookmark!

Plus, it came in good condition and time, so I needed waste no time both diving into the amusing stories and flaunting about it's shiney cover n' pages.

I read Maus I and II back in junior high and thought it was really cool that I was reading a book while also reading a comic. I purchased and re-read the boxed set recently when I stumbled upon it on Amazon. It's excellent. Truly a one-of-a-kind story, told in a way that gets the reader engaged in the details of what went on back in World War II. I love the cleverness of the Jews being portrayed as mice and the Nazi soldiers as cats. The only qualm I have with this series is that Maus II (the second and last book) ends rather abruptly, which is sort of understandable if you read the books. Honestly, I wanted more from the author and the storyline. Either way, it was a good read back when I was age 12 and still a good read at age 25.

DEMEAMING, INSENSITIVE, STEREOTYPING, TOO GRAPHIC - JUST NOT CORRECT.......2007-09-01

I just don't understand, how any type of stereotyping, as maus is loaded with it, can be acceptable. Stereotyping like bigotry, can "never" be justified! The graphic nature of this book is also "disturbing." With so many other books out there, I personally am unable to understand why anyone would use this book that offends "other" (3 million Catholic Poles for starters)holocaust victims. Many, many books out there get the job done, without such dark graphics and offending peoples, who were also victims. There are three books that I feel are truly objective, factual and just not as offensive, as Maus is: "Auschwitz," by Sybile Steinbacher, Richard Lukas' "The Forgotten Holocaust," which "objectively" talks about "everyone's" suffering in the holocaust; and finally, Michael R. Marrus' "The Holocaust in History." On Marrus' book: "An ideal introduction to the subject for any student of the Holocaust, and an authoritative summary for the expert." Yehuda Bauer, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem(back cover). With all the suffering and sensitivity on the Holocaust, "all" victims' feelings should be considered - maus does "not" accomplish this.

Sometimes truth is better than fiction........2007-08-21

I stumbled across this a few days ago in a book shop in Cambodia, of all places. I sat transfixed reading the book until 4 a.m., when my eyes could no longer focus. When I awoke the next day, I finished the book.

We are provided with a narrative by the father, a Holocaust survivor, and a more recent portrayal of the author (the son, who happens to be the artist, also). We see the trials and tribulations of his father and his mother as a young Jewish couple in World War 2 era Poland during the Nazi invasion and subsequent occupation.

We also get to share the experience of being the guilty son of Holocaust survivors. He worries about seeing his father as the stereotypical "miserly old Jew." Can he have judgment about people who have suffered through so much? Can he have a bit of animosity towards his parents, as most people tend to do? The author has to question how his mother could have survived the Nazi regime, but committed suicide when he was 20. He has to question the relationship with his father. Is he annoying or pitiful or admirable?

All these muddled emotions and the true story of a man who lived through the most brutal crime of the 20th century all come into play.

The drawings are great. The format is great. The idea to show different races as different animals is also great. Because, as silly as that sounds- isn't even sillier that people see our own races as different creatures?

As a Polish/american/alsacian I need to say this book is amazing. It captures all cultures together and produces the most authentic representation of WW2 I have ever read.

More than a graphic novel. Rather a powerful moving tale of a son's recovery of a father's experience of the years of the holocaust and how this trickled down into contemporary family life. Reflective and immense in scope. I would recommend this book genuinely to anyone interested in what makes life worth living. The vignettes of Spiegelman's father are harrowing and inspiring, accentuated by a matter of fact story telling style. Spiegelman's insertion of his own family into the narrative serves to contrast the relatively normal travails of a modern family with those of families on the edge of survival and extinction.

The fifth volume in Fantagraphics Books' Complete Peanuts series welcomes a new character: Sally, Charlie Brown's baby sister. It's interesting to see how the perpetually beleaguered CB--criticized for having a "face" face or a "failure face--now takes on the responsibility of worrying about the world his sister will grow up in. His role as manager of the baseball team continues to bring him woe, losing 600-0, losing all 20 games of the season, making a daring attempt to steal home, and having to miss a game to push his sister's stroller. Linus, at first wondering if Sally will someday go out with him, gets his answer in spades: "Isn't he the cutest thing?" But he'd much rather lavish his attention on the new teacher, Miss Othmar ("I'm very fond of the ground on which she walks"), even if his eggshell project doesn't work out as planned. Snoopy, though threatened by a hanging icicle and a possible freeway through his home, still finds joy in being a gopher, the Big Man on Campus, or the Mad Punter. By 1961-62, "Peanuts" was truly the comic strip that we all still know and love, with situations and sayings that would cement its place as one of the most memorable literary creations of all time. Linus is firmly center stage, and if not for baseball would probably eclipse Charlie Brown in status. His efforts to defend his blanket are legendary (Lucy buries it and turns it into a kite), he gets glasses, and his favorite teacher, Miss Othmar (now known as Mrs. Hagemeyer) returns, which leads to some consternation when he (1) learns that she's accepting money to teach and (2) tells her he'll give up his blanket if she gives up biting her fingernails. There's a new character, Frieda with the naturally curly hair, and her floppy cat strikes terror throughout the neighborhood. Oh, about that baseball team. Everyone quits when Schroeder gives up baseball for Beethoven (leading CB to take out a personal ad to manage another team), they decide their pep talk is making them hypocrites, and Linus is assigned to scout the opposing team. As much as "Peanuts" is a reflection of its era ("Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher?"), it also had a self-awareness as a comic strip (Linus: "The most recent criticism is that there is too little action and far too much talking in the modern-day comic strip. A Must for Peanuts Fans.......2007-05-23

Like many others I grew up with Charlie Brown & gang. I bought some of Peanuts comic books when I was a kid. But with my meager allowance I missed out many of them. Now, even though I'm a mom with 2 kids, I was so excited when the box sets were released. I've bought the 1st 3 box sets and can't wait for the next. My son loves it too. It's wonderful going through the strips with my son on Sunday afternoons.

Lucy buries Linus' blanket. Will he find it again? Who is the "Mad Punter"? Who is Miss Othmar? Will the gang every win a baseball game? Will Schroeder finally succumb to Lucy's affections, Why is Violet so damn mean? Well some of these questions will be answered and some not in the next installment of "The Complete Peanuts".

These "lost" strips include Linus making a near-successful run for class president that is ultimately derailed by his religious beliefs (two words: "great" and "pumpkin"), and Snoopy getting involved with a group of politically fanatical birds. One wonders: Was it the political edge in these stories that got them consigned to oblivion for so long? Also worthy of note is an extended, never-reprinted sequence in which Snoopy gets ill and heads to the veterinarian hospital...

Also in this volume: Lucy's attempts at improving her friends branches out from her increasingly well-visited nickel psychiatry booth to an educational slideshow of Charlie Brown's faults (it's so long there's an intermission!). Also, Snoopy's doghouse begins its conceptual expansion, as Schulz reveals that the dog owns a Van Gogh, and that the ceiling is so huge that Linus can paint a vast (and as it turns out unappreciated) "history of civilization" mural on it.

And baseball continues to be a mainstay: Charlie Brown suffers from pitcher's elbow and is replaced by Linus, who turns out to be a vast improvement; he also blows several more crucial matches through various screw-ups (one with the little red haired girl in attendance); and adding insult to injury, his favorite baseball player is demoted to the minor league.

The Complete Peanuts 1963-64 features a new introduction by animator Bill Melendez, producer of over 75 Peanuts animated specials and movies, including the classic A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Peanuts is the most successful comic strip in the history of the medium. A United Media poll in 2002 found Peanuts to be the second most recognizable cartoon property in the world, recognized by 94 percent of the total U.S. consumer market and a close second only to Mickey Mouse (96 percent).

More of the same, however excellent that same was.......2007-09-09

Much of this was more of the same, the continued development of the characters. There is a set of new characters (Five, with Four and Three coming later) but they turn out to be little more than props, good for a week or two and afterwards for when Schulz needed a generic male for Charlie Brown (Shermy now only shows up for group strips). Three and Four look like little Peppermint Patties, and since Peppermint Patty ends up coming from a single-parent family (father only) one wonders if this is sort of backstory for that.

Foreshadowing some of the changes coming up on the next volume are a couple of developments. The baseball mound has become a scene itself, where the characters come up to chat on various things. As for this volume (1963-64), it's just a couple of characters coming up with things to talk about.

As for the red-headed girl, she has changed from a merely distant figure (distant implying "out of Charlie Brown's League) to a seemingly active source of shame and humiliation. Not that Charlie Brown needs her to humiliate him (as some of the baseball groups show, he could do that all by himself), but it definitely adds an accent point to what's going on around him with those he talks to.

One of the most interesting comics has Charlie Brown actually coming on top, although it's more his father than him. Violet spends a few panels bragging about her Father, which Charlie Brown doesn't so much parry but amplifies by explanation. However, CB stops Violet short and explains that his father makes an honorable living and always has a minute for him no matter what he's doing. The last panel has Violet walking with a slight downward tilt of her head and a seeming sadness in her eyes, as if she had finally been devastatingly bested.

In the end, this is worth getting, although I'd get the 1959-1960 and 1961-1962 before this one.

the complete peanuts 1961/62.......2007-08-22

I came to peanuts cartoons late in my life, but for the past five years I have bought every book available. Luckily for me as I have been a customer of amazon both in america and england and bringing out yearly books has been marvelous. Whenever I feel down I just read a few pages and I'm fine. The trouble is Im' going to be around 80 years old before this complete series is printed!!!! Is there anyway we can move this along? Doreen uk

A 2007 summer reading list mini review.

Peanuts has been a lifelong obsession with me. Their first t.v. special came out when I was a toddler. One of the first record albums, I recall listening to was "Your'e a good man Charlie Brown" which contains acted out scenes of many of the strips in this volume. I also grew up across the street from a public library and spent countless hours reading every book of Peanuts reprints I could get my hand on.

I especially like the 1963 to 1964 strips because they initiate two of my favorite Peanuts storylines: the one please line, and Joe Shlabotnik. By the one please line, I refer to the strips where the peanuts gang are lined up to buy movie tickets. Sequences like these afforded Schulz the opportunity to put most of his characters in one strip. Joe Shlabotnik is the name of Charlie Brown's favorite ball player who gets sent down to the low minors in this tome. When Patty asks in the 5-9-64 strip if he had feet of clay, Charlie browns reply is "No, he had a low batting average."

One of the best indicators of the staying power of Peanuts is that I am seldom able to read mine as my seven year old daughter is constantly borrowing them. Apparently, she is beginning the same lifelong obsession with peanuts that I have. Good grief!

Excellent quality but strip size a tad small.......2007-06-25

This is the first of "The Complete Peanuts" series I purchase. Having been a Peanuts aficionado as a child and teenager, I am happy that Fantagraphic gives me the chance to revisit the gang in these beautifully designed books. I chose this volume for the sentimental reason I was born in 1963 and wanted to see the strips that were running as I came into the world. Although I was more than happy with the paper quality and design, I want to mention my disappointment at the reduced size of the strip panels, compared to the Holt, Rinehart and Winston editions of the 1960s-70s I was accustomed to. The Peanuts Parade books published in the 80s are even larger in size. One can only speculate as to why Fantagraphic choose to print smaller-sized panels (perhaps to save in costs?), and it's the only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars to this otherwise extraordinary volume.

Good work, Charles Schulz.......2007-05-31

I would definitely give this latest volume 5 stars just for the opportunity of reading the strips. But I'm really happy that the printing quality is much better than the last volume. The Sunday strips particularly are as clean and crisp as the 1960s paperback books from Holt.

Highlights for me were the Sunday strips that weren't printed before, along with the greater explanation of newest character 5 and sisters 3 and 4. Although the school election had been printed in Peanuts Classics (out of print large volume from the 1970s), the run of cartoons wasn't released in its entirety. I noticed that a week's worth of cartoons which took place after Charlie Brown's Little Leaguer Elbow incident wasn't originally included in the 1960s books, which made me wonder if Mr. Schulz had decided it was less than his usual steller (something I never could understand because I love them all).

Any Peanut fan will tell you that this volume, along with the others, is well worth buying. I cannot recommend it enough.

Among my very early memories is as one of several children sitting on the sloped lawn between two of my neighbour's houses, each of us reading a different story - and so, in no particular order - from "Les Aventures de Tintin." This was my introduction to the most extraordinary comics world ever created, a part of my French-language heritage, though the series has been translated into many languages including English. My goal with these reviews (one for each volume) is to explain to an American audience why Tintin is such a phenomenon in the rest of the world.

I'll be skimpy as to plot details so as not to give any spoilers. I won't even give the gist of the adventures. For those who don't mind spoilers, further details are abundantly available in other reviews or by simply Googling "Tintin." Any value judgements I give are, of course, subjective.

Volume 1: Tintin in America (1932), The Cigars of the Pharaoh (1934), The Blue Lotus (1936). This is the first instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.

The seven-volume series contains 21 of the 24 adventures, omitting the first two -Tintin in the Land of the Soviets and Tintin in the Congo - and the last, incomplete one - Tintin and Alph-Art.

There is a leap forward from the Congo adventure with Tintin in America, further maturity with Cigars, and the series is in full bloom with The Blue Lotus. The first of the three is still amateurish and quite childish, but fun nonetheless; we see Chicago, Al Capone (the only appearance of a real-life character in the entire series, though Hergé does draw himself and some real-world people into the occasional panel, without giving them any identities), the plight of the Indians, and a ticker tape parade.

The Cigars of the Pharaoh introduces the recurring characters Rastapopoulos and the buffoonish Thom(p)son twins, gives us the first of the many mind-bending dream sequences in the series, and takes us to Egypt and to the India under the Raj (the story predates Indian independence) with a mystery that segues into the superb The Blue Lotus, which takes place in China under Japanese occupation. Already, after three adventures, children are enthralled by the exotic locations and adults are amazed by author Hergé's painstaking research and attention to detail.

After reading classic novels on and off in school until I got out of college and in my own free time, I have to say Charlotte Bronte's writing style is the most intricately and splendidly crafted masterpiece. Her sister is quite talented as well. It's a great deal to have this collection that you can pick up and just start reading one of the shorter stories, or go over some of the most powerfully written sentences in Jane Eyre.

What a beautiful book! This is a hardbound book with gold leaf and a red ribbon bookmark. Beautifully put together. It contains ALL of the works of the two Bronte sisters, so if you love 19th century "trashy" romance novels, (which I do!) this is the collection for you! Would definitly recommend this edition over any of the paperback bound editions. Cost more, but it's worth it.

If you are a Bronte sisters fan, definitely get this book. The novel I like the most of course is "Jane Eyre". I read some of the dialogues between Jane and Rochester several times, and every time I read, I got something new out of it. I love Gothic romance, and the Byronic hero of the English literature.

The Genius of the Bronte Sisters.......2006-10-17

This one book collection of Charlotte and Emily Bronte's five novels seems quite a deal indeed - and in hardcover! Anne Bronte's novels are must reads alongside this book of works to complete the genius circle of the Bronte sisters. As an ardent fan of all the Bronte sisters, not only for their storytelling brilliance but their high literature skills, I often find myself reading a sentence over and over again in order to absorb something profound or so perfectly worded. Even if you do not prefer the melodrama of Wuthering Heights or dramatic romance of Jane Eyre; as with all Bronte sisters' novels, they are worth the read just for the amazing literary food to be found therein. The bulk of the Bronte sisters' books also illustrate pages from their own interesting and challenging lives of 150 years ago. Whenever I read the novels of either of the Bronte sisters, as with the works of Jane Austen, my own aspiration to write fiction is strongly rekindled.

Good series.......2007-09-05

This came out when i went to college and stopped collecting comic books for monetary reasons. I was always a huge X-Fan, and am glad I picked up the whole series. The first book is pretty cool as a retelling of X-Men #1, with Magneto in place of Professor X and Apocalypse filling in for Magneto as the Big Bad.

Read back to back the whole series seems a bit disjointed, but you'll have that with a cross title series. If you are an X-Men lover, and are in for a long story, this is a good series to have.

What can I say Ensabuh Nur is simply amazing as the anti-christ of this book he actually feels that he is God in this Story alot of shocking suff goes on in this story guys who are usually bad are good and the ones who are usually good are bad plus this story arc gave birth to many characters that are around to this day.

Book 1 for fans... Book 2 in comparison.......2006-01-21

Most fans would rather they made this book vol. 2 and the second vol. sould have been first. But this is because everyone likes the other issues (and for good reason) more.

However, If you are a true fan of the AOA series then you should have no problem accepting this as the first vol.

Yes, some of the issues in vol. 1 really art exactly the most important for readers to start with... but like I said if you are a fan then you will appreacate their attempt to lay down some backstory to the characters before you get to the meaty AOA issues.

The most obviously unnecessary series is the 4 part mini Blink seris... however, since she is a more recently added character it is, i feel, important to lay down her character before moving on.

And other back points are important too. Like the death of the scarlet witch, or the examples of the gambit-rogue-magneto love triangle.

To wrap it up... if you are a casual reader... then buy Vol.2. But if your a true AOA fan... this is a Must!

First Half is great, but Vol. 2 should be read first..........2005-11-17

The Age of Apocalypse was the high mark for the X-Men (and company) in the 1990s, and can in many ways be considered the climax of the X-Men saga.

Professor X's mentally unbalanced (yet frightfully powerful) son, Legion, had gone back in time to slay Magneto. Xavier thwarts Legion's efforts and sacrifices himself to save his friend, thus birthing a chain of events that would bring about an age of darkness and genocide. Magnus attempts to fill the void left by Xavier but must face a threat in the form of Apocalypse, an ancient mutant demigod who champions the rule of mutants over humans with the most powerful mutants gathered about his throne of skulls (oddly enough filling the role Magneto would play if not for Legion's manipulation of the time stream). [Note- this back story is not presented in this volume, although it would make much more sense than the inclusion of the Blink series at the end]

In this first volume the Age of Apocalypse unfolds in (mostly) chronological order. The first chapter (and in my humble opinion the one reason that this collection is worth buying) shows us Apocalypse's first (modern) declaration of war against the "genetically inferior", and a time when Magneto's X-Men were at peace in the sanctuary of Mt. Wundagore. The Four Horsemen, along with Sabertooth, strike at Cape Citadel (where Magneto strikes in Uncanny X-Men #1), but the X-Men intervene and save the day, but at a high cost: Magneto suffers a diminishment in power and the loss of a child.

Other items included are the meeting between Cyclops (a high ranking officer in Apocalypse's régime) and (his father) Corsair; the beginning of the romance between Rogue and Magnus; a battle between the X-Men and what has become of the Inhumans on the Blue Area of the Moon; the origin of the X-Man (the AOA's version of Cable); and the Blink mini-series (possibly the greatest flaw in this volume due to its relevance to the Exiles over the AOA overall).

Overall Vol. 1 of the AOA is good but I recommend that new readers to purchase the later volumes and only pick this one up if you can't get enough of the AOA (but even then the New Age of Apocalypse is a better outlet for such a craving).
