Brennan Manning wrote The Ragamuffin Gospel "for the bedraggled, beat-up, and burnt-out," the marginalized folks to whom Jesus ministered: the children, the ill, the tax collectors, the women. In other words, the ragamuffins. Manning understands better than most that behind our facades of order and self-assurance are inadequacies that can find healing only in Jesus. While the powerful and religious elite challenged him, Jesus embraced and healed and fed the needs of the ragamuffins. Jesus delivered love, healing, and, most of all, grace.
Grace is defined as "the freely given and unmerited favor and love of God." But, as Manning points out, we have "twisted the gospel of grace into religious bondage and distorted the image of God into an eternal, small-minded bookkeeper." In reality, God offers us grace immeasurable. Brennan Manning gently encourages us to embrace that grace in the face of our greatest needs. And Manning certainly knows whereof he speaks, having taken a journey from priesthood and academic achievement through a collapse into alcoholism. Manning came face to face with his need, finally abandoning himself to grace. And he invites us now to join him in a life of grace.
Manning is without doubt one of the most eloquent writers on the subject of grace because he openly shares his own pain and struggle to help readers deal with failure and inadequacy. And he sweetly challenges them to do the same. --Patricia Klein
Book Description
A Furious Love Is Hot on Your Trail!
Many believers feel stunted in their Christian growth. We beat ourselves up over our failures and, in the process, pull away from God because we subconsciously believe He tallies our defects and hangs His head in disappointment. In this newly repackaged edition—now with full appendix, study questions, and the author’s own epilogue, “Ragamuffin Ten Years Later,” Brennan Manning reminds us that nothing could be further from the truth. The Father beckons us to Himself with a “furious love” that burns brightly and constantly. Only when we truly embrace God’s grace can we bask in the joy of a gospel that enfolds the most needy of His flock—the “ragamuffins.”
Are you bedraggled, beat-up, burnt-out?
Most of us believe in God’s grace—in theory. But somehow we can’t seem to apply it in our daily lives. We continue to see Him as a small-minded bookkeeper, tallying our failures and successes on a score sheet.
Yet God gives us His grace, willingly, no matter what we’ve done. We come to Him as ragamuffins—dirty, bedraggled, and beat-up. And when we sit at His feet, He smiles upon us, the chosen objects of His “furious love.”
Brennan Manning ’s now-classic meditation on grace and what it takes to access it—simple honesty—has changed thousands of lives. Now with a Ragamuffin’s thirty-day spiritual journey guide, it will change yours, too.

Story Behind the Book
The world assigns value to people using measurable standards. Someone is a successful student if she receives As. Someone is a strong athlete if he runs five miles a day. The Lord, however, knows nothing of standards. The Ragamuffin Gospel was inspired by Brennan Manning after he discovered firsthand what it means to live by grace instead of performance. His words bring new life and sweet refreshment to Christians who are tired of never measuring up.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing, Grace defined!.......2007-09-23
Manning simply and eloquently defines and describes the Amazing Grace of God's salavation that is available to all of humanity...
Amazing Grace.......2007-07-23
So often Christianity is viewed as judgmental and legalistic and the heart of Christianity is lost. Jesus was the friend of sinners and accepted and encouraged the downtrodden and those rejected by the religious elite. Manning so eloquently brings to life the meaning of Grace. He paints numerous word pictures to help illustrate what Grace really means.
Reading this book was like taking a fresh breath of air. I would recommend it to anyone, especially anyone struggling with believing that God truly loves them just as they are, in spite of all their terrible sins.
Always Good News.......2007-07-08
Brennan Manning does an excellent job of reaching out to those of us who feel we have so miserably failed to live up to our calling. He vividly demonstrates the good news once again that Jesus came to save sinners and reflects the incredible, unconditional love of his Father. For anyone who needs to hear the good news again, this is the book.
Re-Luthering.......2007-07-04
In the epilogue to Ragamuffin Gospel, "The Scandal of Grace," Manning informs the reader that one of his Roman Catholic critics told him that he "had out Luthered Luther." I don't know that you can "out-Luther" Luther --- but Manning is at least close here.
If you let it, this book will take you through a path that not many people go on. You'll go to Spiritual AA.
Manning, a recovering alcoholic himself, describes the faith life of a Christian as really only a recovering sinner ever could. He is upfront about his disease. He knows that he isn't God. He knows that He doesn't even deserve to sneeze in God's direction. He shows the most comfortable Christian that they are still a sinner even though they have a nice family and go to church every Sunday. He goes even farther. He makes sure that you know that if you're not actively involved in being empty, in being a ragamuffin, that you're not living the Christian life as it was intended to be lived.
In short, he tells you what a Ragamuffin is - it's a sinner-saint. It is someone who has no right, no claim, and no worth who is passionately and wildly embraced by a savior.
The book is a great choice for a devotional read. It will bring not only a new perspective on your current place before God, but it will show you that your ultimate place is with God, singing in the joy of His free grace.
It is a message of grace for anyone brave enough to consider themselves one of God's ragamuffins.
Loved it.......2007-06-30
I absolutely loved this book. It's true that he says a lot of controversial things, but it's very thought-provoking. It caused me to take a long hard look at my spirituality. For a long time I felt like I didn't measure up to God's expectations and I was constantly frustrated because I never felt like I was good enough. Now I know I'm not good enough -- and it's okay! I am loved anyway. :) Brennan Manning does a beautiful job illuminating God's love.

Book Description
Addiction and Grace offers an inspiring and hope–filled vision for those who desire to explore the mystery of who and what they really are. May examines the "processes of attachment" that lead to addiction and describes the relationship between addiction and spiritual awareness. He also details the various addictions from which we can suffer, not only to substances like alcohol and drugs, but to work, sex, performance, responsibility, and intimacy.
Drawing on his experience as a psychiatrist working with the chemically dependent, May emphasizes that addiction represents an attempt to assert complete control over our lives. Addiction and Grace is a compassionate and wise treatment of a topic of major concern in these most addictive of times, one that can provide a critical yet hopeful guide to a place of freedom based on contemplative spirituality.
Customer Reviews:
A well balanced approach to recovery.......2007-10-05
Usually, books on addiction approach the subject in one of two ways; they are either fluffy and impractical, or exclusively practical and miss something about spirituality and the human need of seeking something bigger than oneself to lean on. This is the rare that does both. May talks about brain chemistry as much as he speaks to philosophy and spirituality. This book is a must for anyone who wants to work with any level of addiction and understand both the physiological as well as the spiritual need of the addict in recovery.
Insightful and uplifting.......2007-09-20
One of the best books written on the topic, even for those without drug or alcohol addiction. Great insight into how we humans work and how we can allow grace to nourish our hearts.
Wonderful hope for recovery!.......2007-08-28
This book plainly discusses addictions, the hope for recovery and the fact that we can turn to God's power for healing.
Excellent book about addition and grace.......2007-08-21
This book by Dr. May is an excellent resource in understanding the depths of addiction and the only way to really face and deal with them - through grace. God's grace is what we all need to deal everyday with each of our own addictions. Dr. May points out that everyone has some type of addiction, it's not just food, money, sex, etc. but so many other things as well. He helps you to feel okay about yourself and that there is hope for your addiction problems and that hope is in God.
The Broken Vessel.......2007-06-12
Like the Japanese-zen-inspired vase that integrates imperfection into its very beauty, so Gerald May fashions from our addictions a way of spiritual transformation. The book itself is a mini-journey from mind to heart where we are first led to cognitively understand the physical, neurological basis of addiction, to an inner heart-recognition that the energy of addiction is the same longing for Wholeness that fills us all. Here's the thing about grace. There may be a few out there who can beat their addictions into submission by force of will - but even so the achievement will be short-changed. In Budhist terms - you may have pulled yourself out of the muck but you did not allow the lotus to bloom ike you could have. Instead, if you consecrate (May's term) the power of the addiction, if you integrate the energy of craving into a place where effort and surrender meet half way, you will see, accept, some day even give thanks for the imperfection that allowed the broken vessel that you are become an instrument of beauty and of good.

single girls guide to marry a man, his kids and his ex wife.......2007-10-01
This book gave situations that come up that can happen but not suggestions on how to deal with them. this book didnt do me much good.
Down to earth advice - too bad she copped out at end.......2007-09-06
I wasn't quite sure how to rate this book -- I enjoyed MOST of the book, but, boy, she slung a real doozy at the end, which left me with a bad taste in my mouth. First, the good stuff -- she relates with honesty, frankness, and much-needed humor, the struggles faced by stepmothers, using many examples and stories from her own life. I felt relieved, energized and heartened. I found myself taking myself less seriously and began seeing the big picture, and even laughing at some of my struggles (particularly with the ex-wife). She has a young, hip tone, which was refreshing after some of the "psych-speak" books I had previously read (although at times it seems she's trying a little too hard). BUT -- and this was a big "but" for me -- at the end she basically says the only way to be truly accepted is to have your own child with your new partner. Ugh. I felt like I had been sucker-punched. As a "childless" stepmom, I felt completely diminished, devalued and disrespected. I wanted to yell, "Sally -- not everyone chooses to or WANTS to have a child! Have a little respect!" I have to say that this last chapter and this declaration cheapened the book for me. It made her sound naive and judgmental, not to mention insensitive. I wondered how someone who seemed so "with it" for most of the book could be so "out of it" on this point. I'm just so tired of the "have children, it will solve everything and give you a purpose in life" thing. Too bad she resorted to this tired old answer, especially in this age of inclusion, and recognition of ALL types of families. And too bad her publisher didn't think twice about including it. I am rating the book 3 stars, hoping that she is just young and naive, and wouldn't have written that if she were 40.
Good for the girlfriend that is considering becoming a stepmother.......2007-09-04
I am a single gal who was looking for someone to tell me the issues that I might be inheriting if I take the next step with my boyfriend. This is an informative book of issues to be aware of and reads almost like a novel. I had picked up another stepmother book but it was way to dry and had too much homework that I was not prepared to concur just yet. This was an easy read.
This book was written for people that know they are going to marry a man, his kids and ex-wife or already have - not for people contemplating. It did lack such issues as - things to consider when moving in with each other, how to introduce kids into the relationship, etc. If you are still on the fence, you might consider another book that deals with dating issues and the step between dating and marrying.
Straight talk for new Stepmoms!.......2007-09-03
I am a new stepmom to a six year old girl. She's great, but sometimes, things bother me and I have a hard time putting them into words. This book is like reading my mind. It has helped me so much, and it also makes you realize that feelings you have sometimes are natural and ok...nothing to feel guilty about. All new stepmoms should read this book...even if your husband wasn't married before - if he just had children from a previous relationship, as mine did, a lot of the book will still apply to you as well.
Great book! Suprisingly Entertaining.......2007-08-02
This book really helped me to realize that I'm not the only person that does really stupid step-mom things and then regrets them. It's a great read if you're feeling like no one in the world can possibly understand what you're going through.

Customer Reviews:
A Must Read..........2007-07-13
...for any Christian. It doesn't matter which way you lean on the doctrines of grace (Calvinist, Arminian), this book clearly and concisely articulates the power of grace in the Christian's life. Bridges' writing style is very reader-friendly, and he can make even the most difficult concepts easy to understand. Highly recommended.
Do NOT miss this book!.......2007-06-21
This is the single greatest book I have EVER read concerning the Grace of God. Never have I seen grace explained so clearly or explored so thoroughly and accurately. My walk with Christ and my relationship with Him have been transformed by reading this book. I didn't want it to end. Buy one for yourself and then buy one for your Pastor and friends. I cannot say enough about it other than: "Absolutely do NOT miss this incredible book!!" Might I also recommend The Case for a Creator: A Journalist Investigates Scientific Evidence That Points Toward God. This book by Lee Stroebel is the best book in print regarding the evolution vs. creation debate. Don't miss this one either!!
Excellent in-depth analysis of what the Bible says about God's grace.......2006-08-24
As a believer in Christ for many years, I thought I had a fair grasp on the biblical concept of God's grace. Then I read this book and realized just how little I know. Jerry Bridges does an excellent job, born of many years of ruminating on the subject, of helping beleaguered Christians wrap their minds around this frequently misunderstood teaching. He strikes a delicate but scripturally sound balance between law and liberty, license and legalism, dependence and discipline.
We are at the same time commanded to work out our own salvation and to depend utterly on God's grace to do it for us. Whatever good we are commanded to do, we are able to do only because God is working in us both to desire and to be able to do what is pleasing to Him. The Bible teaches both our personal responsibility to pursue holiness, and our utter dependence on the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to make it happen. Jerry Bridges does a great job of reconciling the biblical tension between these two seemingly inconsistent doctrines.
Also of great value are the latter chapters on how to appropriate the grace of God to effect change in our own lives and in the lives of those around us. Bridges shows how we must move beyond "grace" as merely a religious buzzword, and actually do the things to lay hold of grace in our daily lives and difficult struggles. Finally, the book concludes with a chapter on the "garments of grace", that is, those aspects of Christian character that should be increasingly evident in our lives as we avail ourselves of God's grace. These including things like gratitude, humility, forbearance and forgiveness, all of which will characterize a person who regularly approaches God's throne of grace with boldness.
Thanks to Jerry Bridges for this insightful and helpful work. I commend it to the reading of all believers for their edification, and ultimately for their ability to revel in God's transforming, empowering grace.
The context and content of the concept of Grace.......2004-10-06
One can read a book about a topic, but it may seem all to academic unless there is something related to the content of that book that you yourself have had to wrestle through. I do not endorse Jerry Bridges' "Transforming Grace" because it tickles my academic theological fancy. I endorse this book because I've "Been there... Done that... Got the t-shirt..."
Jerry Bridges articulates conclusions and thoughts I have come to regarding the Biblical concept of grace in the life of the believer; conclusions and thoughts I came to after wrestling with the issues of law and grace in the context of a former church characterized by a sophisticated subtle legalism founded in a scholastic pseudo-Puritanism; thoughts and conclusions forged in the fire of painful experience, the study of Scripture, and prayer. Bridges has not only articulated many of the same thoughts and conclusions I had come to regarding a Biblical concept of grace, he has expanded on them.
I also saw in "Transforming Grace" some of the principles and concepts set forth by Francis Schaffer in his seminal work "True Spirituality". The advantage of Bridges work is that it articulates those things from "True Spirituality" on a more popular and understandable level.
The Apostle Paul very clearly states in Titus 2:11-12 that it is Biblical grace that teaches us how to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly and righteously and godly in the present age. It is a focus on grace that teaches these things, not a focus on the law or duty or scrupulosity. It is not that there is no place for law and duty, but that place is subordinate to grace, not equal to, above, or apart from it. This truth is a foundational principle to what Bridges is saying in "Transforming Grace".
The grace that is spoken of in this book is not some vague concept of "grace" that has no content or context. It is the grace of God as exhibited in the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is in the context of the Gospel that grace has content and meaning. Bridges clearly articulates the great cost of grace from God's perspective in the work and suffering of Jesus Christ. It's through the payment of that great cost by Christ Himself that grace becomes free, unearned, and un-conditional not just for lost and bankrupt sinners, but also for forgiven sinners living their Christian lives in response to the grace and love God has shown them. "Transforming Grace" clearly sets out that Biblical grace is "God's Riches At Christ's Expense."
Nor is Bridges pulling his view of grace out of a hat. This book looks at Scripture and expounds relevant passages.
"Transforming Grace" exposes the latent legalism that still afflicts the Evangelical church at large. But neither is antinomianism spared. Both legalism and antinomianism share the same basic fundamental flaw. Both are the result of an insufficient view of what the Gospel is, and what the grace of God in the Gospel does. It is a focus on the grace of God in the Gospel that will keep us in the way that leads to life, will keep our life in Biblical balance, and is the basis of all true Biblical spirituality.
If you are looking for a well-balanced presentation of what Biblical grace is, I highly recommend "Transforming Grace".
Now I Understand!.......2003-03-25
I never understood God's grace and what it meant until I read "Transforming grace". I have spent years trying to earn what God had already given to me freely- eternal salvation. I no longer see God as a task master ready to step on me for the smallest infraction. I now see him as the God who loved me even when I was at emnity with him. Thats grace! I see God as a holy, gracious, generous, loving, and good God.
If you've been feeling like the life of the believer is more of a burden than a blessing, then you need to read this book. I promise that you won't feel like that after reading this book. You will be walking once and for all in the light of God's wonderful grace.
I really recommend this book. It's an easy read, and Jerry Bridges keeps it real and biblical.

Book Description
Marriage is a profound and marvelous mystery established by God for his glory—and that is for our good. So many marital relationships never reach their greatest potential because they have the fatal limitation of being focused on one another. When our focus is solely on God, our marriages have the potential to
thrive and not merely
survive.
“
Love That Lasts is thoroughly biblical, very practical, and quite convicting. The Ricuccis do not write from an ivory-tower mind-set but from the experience of working through to a successful marriage in their own lives. Every Christian couple should benefit from this book.”

“If you knew Gary and Betsy like I do, if you could see them together and feel the warmth, respect, and deep romantic love that they have for one another, you would snatch up this book and read it just to learn all you could from them. I recommend that you do so! They live what they write about, and that’s what makes their book so compelling.”

This valuable book—written for married or engaged couples or those in anticipation of marriage—is a biblical exposition of how to make the truth and principles of a godly marriage not just come alive, but last. Together, husband and wife discuss what the Bible has to say about marital roles, the why and how of communication, conflict resolution, romance, intimacy, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Biblical marriage.......2007-08-14
This marriage book stands out because its focus is Biblical. Many Christian marriage books seem to come at marriage from a psychological angle first, then add verses to support that. This starts with a Biblical view of marriage and then moves towards each spouses practical responses to that view. A group of couples in our church recently went through this book and many found it to be very helpful in their marriages.
There were aspects of the writing style that bothered me a bit. The authors would change from his perspective to her perspective in a kind of haphazard way. It seems like offsetting or transitioning between these two viewpoints would make it easier to read. However, despite that I still highly recommend this book!
Very Refreshing.......2007-06-12
This is a very refreshing read. It kindled my love for Alicia and for the ordinance of marriage. They have a very high view of marriage, namely because they have a high view of God, where marriage begins. As with all of the people at Sovereign Grace, these writers are Spirit-filled, Word-centered, and gospel-saturated. They also are complementarians, doing a great job covering roles and responsibilities. Another added benefit, is their understanding of the necessity of the local church in all of life, especially marriage. The chapter on the husband's role is insightful and challenging. The chapter for wives is great too.
These writers have spent some timing learning from the guys at CCEF (Tripp, Powlison). Conflict is inevitable (if there is true intimacy), but the way in which you resolve conflict is vitally important. I was particularly challenged to be very specific and use biblical terms when confessing sin (and no 'but's'). The chapters on romance and sex were great too. Busyness is a type of selfishness, a failure of priority. I would highly recommend this little book to all, single, engaged, and married. Throughout the book, they acknowledge their indebtedness to the Mahaney's and point the reader to their books for further study.
"Nothing is more important to your marriage than your theology" 21
"Nothing is more essential to a marriage, and nothing brings more hope, than applying the gospel of Jesus Christ." 23
"So many couples spend their lives avoiding conflict. They choose a superficial 'peace at any price'--a price much higher than they realize." 113
Love that lasts, for a marriage that lasts........2006-12-02
LOVE THAT LASTS: WHEN MARRIAGE MEETS GRACE is a revised edition of a 1992 book by the same couple and with similar name. This is a magnificent volume for limited reading audiences. I say that for this reason; if you are a devoted Christian couple or seeking God's guidance in your marriage, this is a must read and you will cherish every page. If you are somewhat lackadaisical in your personal devotion to Christian living and believe you can build a strong marriage without God's grace and guidance, you probably won't finish the book, but then, if you fall in the latter category, you probably wouldn't buy it to begin with.
The book can be a bit tedious at times, but the style in which it is written prompts the reader to stop and think about what has been said. What I guess I'm trying to say is, this is not a book that you can breeze through in an afternoon, though it is limited to fewer than 200 pages. You have to really contemplate the messages and absorb the content to gain the book's full measure of benefit. This is a book that should be read with an attitude of dedication and resolve. Do that, and you will gain insightful knowledge.
One of the many things I have gleaned from its pages comes very early on in the opening pages of the first chapter where Gary likens marriage to a family vacation. That analogy set me to thinking on the subject and I worked out a counseling method that I have found most effective. When I am giving pre-marriage counseling to a young couple, they are often quite reserved at first, so I break the ice with asking about movies and the movie "Vacation" where virtually everything that could go wrong, does go wrong. Then I ask the couple to give details about their worst vacation, making notes along the way of things like, poor planning, not enough money, didn't really want to go so didn't enjoy it very much, weather conditions and a variety of other scenarios that went wrong.
In almost every case, once both bride and groom have told of their worst vacations, they have clearly outlined the exact things that I am there to counsel them about. I am able to illustrate how better planning, communication, attitudes, etc., combined with more realistic expectations on their parts would have made the vacations much more enjoyable. This opens up discussion for applying these same principles to their marriage. The fact that this all stems from their own personal experiences seems to make it all much more applicable as they are usually able to see that even that worst vacation could have been a treasure if they had been willing to except the pitfalls of life and "roll with it", working things out and altering your course as you go along.
I believe you will find similar gems in this book that will open doors to a stronger marriage. For a Christian couple, dedicated to building a strong covenant marriage, and using that marriage to serve the Lord, this is one of the best books you'll find.

An inspirational guide to the love and dedication .......2006-07-10
Love That Lasts: When Marriage Meets Grace by Gary and Betsy Ricucci is an inspirational guide to the love and dedication that are the foundations of a successful and enduring marriage. Introducing the conceptual understanding of God being a fundamental aspect of a marital relationship, Love That Lasts carries its readers through the intimate counsel on protecting sanctity of a marriage and protecting the interests of those involved in the marriage through the fulfilling path of God's commandments and blessings. Love That Lasts is very highly recommended for all Christian couples for its evocative and discerning comprehension of God, and the perception of marriage as the essence of two people and their mutual love God as a part of loving each other.
Excellent!.......2006-05-20
"A potter begins by centering his clay on the wheel. When the wheel starts turning, he can't just grab the clay. He must carefully but firmly keep the clay in the center of the wheel. He has to work it gently but deliberately, applying just enough pressure to shape it while constantly adding moisture. If he lets the clay get cold, it becomes stiff, resistant, and unworkable. If he neglects the clay and fails to add water, it will dry out and crack. If he stops the process and then starts again, he may force the clay off center, or he may mar it by putting his hands on it too quickly or aggressively. It takes time, but if the potter is patient, creative, and firm but gentle, there's no limit to what he can create."
This brief excerpt is drawn from Love That Lasts, written by Gary and Betsy Ricucci. Gary, who wrote these words, applies this metaphor to a husband learning to practice romance as an art. "I am to pursue my wife consistently, warmly, and affectionately, lavishing her with encouragement and affirmation." What caught my attention as I read this section of the book was the lesson he seeks to teach through these words. While the lesson is meant primarily for husbands as they relate to their wives, there is such a strong parallel between the marriage relationship and the relationship of Christ to His people that I could not help but see a lesson for my relationship with the Savior. "Every wife is different, and so is every season of life." We could as easily affirm that "every person is different, as is every season of life." And here is the lesson: "But like the potter, we are committed to the process as well as to the outcome." That little sentence stopped me in my tracks.
"Like the potter, we are committed to the process as well as to the outcome." You see, I know that God has great things in store for me in heaven. I believe firmly that, when I die or when Christ returns, I will be changed in the twinkling of an eye. I will be instantaneously made perfect and will be restored to the state of perfection in which I was created to live. My relationship to God will be fully restored and I will no longer desire what is sinful. I know that this is God's ultimate goal, to display His glory in transforming me fully and finally into His likeness. God's goal for me is nothing less than glorification.
While I have full confidence in God's ultimate plan, I find that I have far less confidence in His committment to the process that precedes this consumation. When I read Ricucci's words I had to pause and reflect and ask myself if I truly believe that God is as committed to the process of sanctification as He is to the final act of glorification. Is Christ pleased with the baby steps He sees in my life, or does He lament that I do not grow more--that I do not grow faster? Does He rejoice with me as I grow in my knowledge and love of Him? Is He glorified even in the smallest, halting step I take towards being further transformed into His image?
I thought about this for a while. And then I saw in myself and in my attitude towards my wife just a shadow, a fleeting glimpse, of the work of Christ. I love my wife dearly. I love Aileen so much that my heart aches for her sanctification. I love few things more than seeing my wife reading her Bible, teaching the children about God, and being with her in times of worship. I pray continually that God will continue to mold her into His image. And, if I look carefully, I can see times when I have provided the leadership to help move her (and myself, and our children) towards this goal. I can see where I have been committed to the process. And best of all, I can see the joy I have taken both in leading her through the process and in seeing the results of the process. In my relationship with Aileen I can see, as if in a dim, clouded mirror, a reflection of the work of Christ in my life.
Of course I can also see with startling, shameful clarity the inumerable times that I have failed. I can think of opportunities missed or deliberately avoided. I can see times where my own selfishness and laziness have no doubt robbed Aileen of many a blessing. Yet my faith is stirred when I think that God never misses an opportunity. God is faithful where I am faithless, committed where I am laxadasical, strong where I am weak.
And I am grateful. My marriage ought to be a near-perfect metaphor of the relationship of Christ to His church. Because of my sin, and because of Aileen's sin, it cannot be. Yet through God's grace it can still be a shadow. It can still point to a greater, more perfect reality. It can point to Christ.
It also occured to me that there is a point at which the metaphor of marriage ends, for there is no glorification in a marriage. There will never be a time in which every marriage will be made perfect. Instead, marriage will cease. Like the sacrifices of the Old Testament, marriage will cease for it will no longer be necessary. We will no longer need this shadow to point to a greater reality since, thanks be to God, we will live within the final reality. As the feasts and festivals and sacrifices of the Old Covenant were fulfilled in Christ's death, so the ultimate purpose of marriage will be fulfilled in His return.
What became clear to me as I read this book is that by studying marriage as it is presented in Scripture, we are studying Christ. When we learn about how a husband is to love and care for His wife and how a wife is to submit to and respect her husband, we are learning how Christ cares for us and how we are to respond to His love. When we, as husbands, commit ourselves to the pursuit of our wives and to shape their hearts and lives through loving leadership, we learn how Christ molds and shapes us as we learn of the loving committment it takes to do this. When wives submit to the leadership of their husbands and respond to their initiative, they display the love and faith they must also have in the Savior.
Love That Lasts is a book that is well worth reading for both a husband and a wife. It is, in the words of Jerry Bridges, "thoroughly biblical, very practical, and quite convicting." The Ricucci's are members of Covenant Life Church in Gathersburg, Maryland and one can clearly see within their writing the influence of the ministry of C.J. Mahaney. I dare say that if a person attempted to combine C.J.'s books Humility and Sex, Romance and the Glory of God along with Carolyn's Feminine Appeal, he would end up with something much like this.
My only real disappointment was that it sometimes seemed that the authors were holding back. I know that they know so much more about marriage than they were able to relay in the 160 pages of this book and I wish that I could have learned more from them. Perhaps God will provide the opportunity for them to write more thoroughly in the future. I hope He does.
This is a book about marriage, about the relationship of a husband and wife. But on a deeper level, it is a book about the church, about the relationship of Christ to His people. And this is the way it ought to be, for marriage exists primarily for His glory. Marriage is not about me, it is not about her, and it is not about us. Marriage finds its purpose primarily in God. As the Ricucci's say, "A truly Christian marriage starts with the reality that the institution of marriage does not belong to us. It belongs to God. He designed marriage, and his purposes for it are paramount." Having read this book I can truly say that never has marriage seemed so important, so worth the investment, and so great a means of sanctification. I will let this sentence stand as my endorsement for this book, for I'm quite sure that there is no higher praise I could provide.

****SCOTTISH HEAVEN****.......2007-02-10
This book is for all of us Scottish fans. They were all great and on my KEEPER shelf. Worth buying and reading.
boring, boring, and boring.......2006-09-19
This was one of the most boring collection of stories I have ever read. I have liked most of Jude Deveraux's earlier books and thought this might be a good read. It was a good snooze. None of the stories caught my attention. I kept plugging away, hoping something would catch my attention, but no. I couldn't get interested in any of the characters, the plots were lifeless, and any romance seemed pretty much nonexistent.
Maybe I read this on a bad day, but I doubt it. I think it was just a collection of stories from authors who wrote them on bad days. No zing, no pop, no life.
Jill Barnett outshines them all..........2004-03-16
This is a five story anthology by various authors all taking place in the Scottish Highlands. Some stories are much better than others. I will note a separate rating of each below, but the average of all five ended up being 3 stars, hence my overall score of the book.
In the first story, "Unfinished Business", by Jude Deveraux, Tyler Stevens agrees to fill in at work for her niece Krissy when she takes ill. Temporarily stepping into Krissy's secretarial position leads Tyler to travel to Scotland with Krissy's boss, Joel Kingsley. While in Scotland, Tyler and Joel unwittingly stumble into a ghostly murder mystery that piques their curiosity. Investigating together may lead them to find more than the answer to an old mystery. This story was pretty good, but not what I would consider excellent. It was a worthwhile read and deserves a rating of three stars.
The second story, "Fall From Grace", by Jill Barnett was the hands down winner of this lot. This was my very first Jill Barnett read, and since discovering her here, I've now read nearly all her work. The clans McNish and McNab have been at war for some time. Grace McNish and her band of merry misfits mistakenly ambush and capture the wrong man. Colin Campbell, Earl of Argyll, was on a diplomatic journey investigating the McNab/McNish clan war when Grace "captured" him. After catching a glimpse of the wild Scottish beauty, he decided to remain in her custody to be near her, and gather information for his investigation. This wonderful story is full of humor. From one clan member who is half deaf and misunderstands even simple instructions, to another who can't hit the side of a barn with the bow and arrow. I laughed out loud too many times to count. This story also contains the steamiest love scene of the entire book. After everything I've read by Ms. Barnett, this is still a favorite. Definitely a five star read.
"Cold Feet", penned by Geralyn Dawson, is the next entry. Texas cowboy, Rand Jenkins, gets lost in the snow-covered moors en route to a castle in the Highlands. Stopping off at a cottage for directions, he meets Annie Munro, a healer who is considered a witch by the locals. Rand ends up spending more time with the lovely Annie than he had planned. For some unknown reason, every cat in the surrounding area is attracted to Rand who subsequently develops an allergic reaction. Using her knowledge of herbs and potions, Annie attempts to ease his suffering. While Rand is fending off felines and trying to get rid of his itching, he begins to get an itch for Annie. This was my least favorite story. It just seemed too unrealistic and didn't hold my attention. I would give this one two stars.
"The Matchmaker" by Pam Binder is story number four. Kathleen MacKenzie owns a bakery in the Scottish town of Edinburgh. When American businessman Duncan MacGreggor leaves his wallet at her establishment, Kathleen sets out to return it. Catching up to him in the elevator of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, she hands him the wallet. Magically they are catapulted back in time to the sixteenth century where Mary, Queen of Scots still inhabited the castle. Now, together they must find their way back to their own time. I wasn't greatly impressed with this novella either. It seemed a little too far-fetched to be believable. I would rate it two stars as well.
Last, but not least, is "The Christmas Captive" by Patricia Cabot. Lady Mairi has fled her guardian's home to escape his rule, and his intent to marry her. Physician, Niall Donnegal, whose brother is the new Duke of Camden, finds Mairi who was injured during her flight. Not knowing she is related to his dreaded enemy, he takes her to his home to recuperate. Their relationship quickly grows. But they must deal with the curse she believes is real, and her guardian's wrath, in order to remain together. This story was quite enjoyable and an above average read. It earns a rating of four stars from me.
At the time I read this book, Jude Deveraux was the only author familiar to me. Her story here was better than the full-length novel I had already read. Overall, three of the stories were worth reading - Jude Deveraux, Jill Barnett, and Patricia Cabot. I would say three out of five would make this collection worth picking up. And with each entry being approximately 100 pages, no one story takes long to read.
boring.......2003-10-14
I expected a lot more out of this book, especially from Jude. I couldn't even get through half of the stories before I gave up on it and marked it off as a wasted $3. Don't bother with it, you will probably fall asleep before you can finish it.
wonderful anthology.......2002-01-19
I'll admit that as a big fan of Diana Gabaldon's OUTLANDER series I'm drawn to Scottish based romance. I bought the collection knowing nothing of anyone but Jude Deveraux, but if this is any example of their work I'll be hitting the search button after this review is finished. The book of 5 novellas was a wonderful escape from home and work.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS sneaks a ghost story into a sassy romance between 2 people who upon first glance couldn't be more wrong for each other.-- Tyler Stevens is convinced Joel Kingsley is completely wrong for her young cousin. Krissy is terribly infatuated with her older boss and despite Tyler's efforts to convince her otherwise, the girl thinks she's in love. Going to Scotland was Krissy's idea. If Tyler took her cousins place on the business trip she could keep an eye on Mr Kingsley for her while she recouperates from her terrible cold. What Tyler didn't count on was that "Old Mr. Kingsley" wouldn't be that old...in fact he was rather appealing. Having them thrown together to solve a centuries old mystery (complete with ghosts) only complicates an already tricky situation.
FALL FROM GRACE's humor really got to me. I felt so silly laughing out loud in the breakroom at work, but then that's what I needed the breakroom for....a break.---Grace McNish was fiercly protective of her clan after years of their being subjected to the McNab's theiving and raiding. When one of the McNab sons falls into her hands she and her rag-tag band of highland "merry-men" think they have it made. Ransom. One problem. He's not who they think he is.
COLD FEET who could resist a cowboy from Texas in the first place. This story had all of the things I love humor, romance and a bit of the supernatural.--Rand Jenkins is lost on the Scottish moors. He's supposed to be guiding his friends bride to the ancestral home, but as a Texan he's a fish out of water. Rand stumbles upon the cottage of a friendly local woman who takes them in out of the cold. She claims she's a witch and when strange things start happening to Rand he's convinced she has put a spell on him....and she has in more ways than one.
THE MATCHMAKER has modern business owner Kathleen MacKenzie fending off the efforts of the local matchmaker Harriet. She doesn't need a husband and even if she did she could find him all on her own. For example, the handsome American who stops by every morning for coffee and a scone. Harriet will not be thwarted. A little coaxing and (of course) a little magic will throw the hesitant couple into the past where they are not only fighting their feelings for each other they are fighting for their lives in the time of Mary, Queen of Scots.
THE CHRISTMAS CAPTIVE was read at the perfect time of the year...well Christmas of course. Mairi is on the run from her fiance. Niall is more than happy to keep her hidden after discovering the young runaway on his families lands cowering inside a hollowed out tree. She's full of secrets and a mysterious past that the logical physicain refuses to beleive. When her fiance comes looking for her, the Scottish lord has to deal with a murderous enemy when he admits that his soul mate will be staying right where she is... with him.
These 5 tales weave a pattern of magic, history and romance that really reel you in. I highly recommend them to anyone who needs to "get away". The shorter novellas let you finish one when you might not have the time to read a longer book. It's perfect for someone who really does need a vacation and a little romance but just doesn't have the time.

Book Description
Award-winning author Jill Churchill once again brings a bit of dazzle to the Great Depression, in her fourth captivating and colorful trip up New York's Hudson River for some high living -- and dying -- in hard times.
Sister and brother Lily and Robert Brewster, raised in the lap of luxury, may no longer have a penny to their names, but at least they have a roof over their heads -- which is more than many can say in this bleak November of 1932. This is thanks to their eccentric great-uncle, whose will allows them to live in his mansion on a sprawling estate in Voorburg-on-Hudson. And now there's even some cash rolling in, since the Brewsters have taken part-time teaching duties at the local grade school.
But their luck turns sour when a mysterious and badly disguised stranger comes to Grace and Favor willing to pay generously to have a secret meeting there shortly before the presidential election. Are they gangsters? Pretty Boy Floyd is rumored to be somewhere near. Or worse, are they a rabid pro-Hoover political group trying to stop Roosevelt from being elected at the last minute by making up some nasty gossip about him?
When one of the mystery guests is murdered in his bath, a little boy is kidnapped, and Chief Howard Walker can't find anywhere to house all his suspects except the local Hospital for the Criminally Insane, the pace becomes hectic. In the end a local woman, a secretary from upriver whom Lily has befriended, and one of the children at the school provide the vital clues that allow Lily to put two and two together. But only after a wild car chase with three women drivers.
Jill Churchill is the winner of the Agatha and Macavity Mystery Readers Awards and was nominated for an Anthony Award for her bestselling Jane Jeffry series. She is the author of three previous Grace & Favor mystery novels, Anything Goes, In the Still of the Night, and Someone to Watch Over Me, and lives in the Midwest.

A Grace and Favor Mystery anyone?.......2005-05-27
In order to support themselves, Lily and Robert Brewster have turned the Grace and Favor mansion that they live in (which, according to their uncle's will, they may do until they die themselves) into a bed and breakfast.
They also find themselves in the position to do a little part-time teaching after Millicent Langston, a local teacher, mysteriously disappears following a visit home due to medical reasons. In the Depression, every little bit counts, and so Robert and Lily both consider themselves fortunate to have each opportunity.
But, when a stranger requests to rent a room at the bed and breakfast for the outrageous amount of $500, Lily and Robert are reluctant to accept. The stranger obviously has a few secrets that he intends to keep to himself, and Lily suspects that it might not be such a good idea to allow him, and his mysterious cohorts, access to their home. There is no specific reason to turn down the offer, though, especially since they are lacking any solid proof of foul play.
Both Lily and Robert are shocked to discover that one of their secret guests is none other than the Brother Mark Luke Goodheart. Even more shocking is the fact that Brother Goodheart has been found murdered, in one of the bed and breakfast's bathtubs.
Brother Goodheart was a notoriously lecherous radio preacher, much hated by a variety of people, so the list of suspects is quite long. Police Chief Walker fears that he might never find out what really happen. At his request, Lily joins in the investigation. What follows is a delightful tale of twists and turns and mysterious coincidences.
Set in 1932, LOVE FOR SALE had a very authentic historical setting. One could almost feel the ambience of the great mansion and sense the strength of the lively characters residing there in the Depression. Reminiscent of the stories told by the "old timers" about this era, LOVE FOR SALE imparts a certain homey charm. Readers will get a glimpse of "the good old days" through the imagination of author Jill Churchill.
In LOVE FOR SALE, Jill Churchill has written an imaginative novel that will keep most readers guessing until the final culmination. Churchill's style of writing was refreshingly pure and sweet, her characters having morals and values that are seldom found in contemporary novels. The only disappointment that readers may find on the pages of this mystery are a few dry passages, other than that, LOVE FOR SALE delivers a mysteriously enjoyable read.

Radio Static Backdrops Tinny voice, "This Is The Operator.".......2005-04-06
Oh my. Another one of those yummy covers which makes me want to leap into its picture and soak up the art.
The luxurious color-combo is literally healing in its delicious hue-intensity with primal-contrast; the design paints an addictive, nouveau-uplift on historic mysteries; the tangy texture of raised print nudges fingers to slide over the face; the extra flap-under-cover is welcoming, exposing the publisher's commitment to the book's value. Love the way the crescent moon leads the eye to the yellow light in an upstairs window on the brick mansion, then to the flapping pink curtain. Love how these image icons are repeated from the external scenes into the upstairs bathroom as itchy fingers open the flap. Drool. Slurp.
Churchill's confidence gracefully shows itself as the plot rhythm and character development eases off to a tattoo of Lilly, John, and support cast unhurriedly discussing life and politics. The story doesn't need to surge into a mystery mode until around page 37 of the paperback, when the murder is up. The event is staged with panache, and the characters hop to; shifting effortlessly into a hot-step jazz. I didn't quite notice I had been taken for a ride; but, of course, that's what I was there for.
The mystery kicks in, a la Agatha Christie; it's easy to see why Churchill's been compared to Miss Christie, even said to have surpassed the Master.
The story hums along smoothly in a snappy beat; so much so that, once the story ends, the reader is left with the stillness of true silence. The feeling is like that of a refrigerator compressor, humming as un-noticed "white noise" in the background. Once the motor stops, however, a warm body having been resting in the soothing, active presence is abruptly transported from what he had adjusted to as an ongoing reality in a cozily buzzing cocoon, into the empty exaggeration of the chill of motionless existence.
Sometimes that cessation of refrigerator-type-buzz is felt as relief.
Other times it is felt as a loss carrying a nearly overwhelming sense of grief.
When the hum of the mystery-in-process in LOVE FOR SALE culminates at the final period on the last page, there's a feeling of "Oh no, don't end, not yet."
This is the call of the cozy mystery sub-genre, a call which is heard and answered, in this novel especially.
Maybe it's the live-in quality of this sub-genre which somehow gives it the right (or the necessity) to continue, in ongoing, addictive series. Though the act of murder is as far from cozy as a warm body can get, maybe the desire for it's resolution and ultimate cessation is nurtured within that culture of comfort.
If that desire grows strong enough, might triumph and redemption win in our species?
See what type of contemplation Churchill's "simple" cozy, LOVE FOR SALE, can elicit from the soul of a reader who loves a good mystery resolved well?
Not wanting to conclude before mentioning some of the unique pulls of this story, I'll note that Chief Walker, the investigator, does not typically fade into the background as the amateur sleuth does the real work of exposing the dirt. Walker is an unusually warm, hired servant of justice, who methodically, yet compassionately walks determinedly, unwaveringly through his job. He's like a Columbo without the build up of bungle. In a typical Churchill character draw, Chief Walker is easy to be with, non-assuming, not a tough guy, just endearingly responsible in a step-by-step sort of way. He serves people simultaneously to serving justice.
I was intrigued by the hits here and there of the historic setting, when radio knobs are tuned for updates on "what's going on," instead of Remote Controls aimed and fired; when rarely made, heavily assisted by the Operator, long-distance phone calls are required, instead of flip-open cell phones lifted from humongous purses. Then there's the political pull of presidents elected, with the plot opening and closing as characters discuss and deal with Roosevelt in process of taking the gantlet from Truman.
Jill Churchill must have a worm hole or time machine somewhere in her closet, to be able to successfully work two mystery series, which are ages and universes apart in culture and style. I hope she never allows any discouragement lurking "In The Still of The Night" to break down the reality between her creativity and its deserved manifestation.
Well done, lady!

GRACE & FAVOR.......2004-11-13
I read this book and it was okay at first but I was bored with it rather quickly. I put it down after the first two chapters. I would rate it between 1.25 and 2 stars.
Genteel fun that's a trip back in time.......2004-10-24
Ready for an escapist mystery that will take you back to a time when life was a bit more genteel? Travel back to the Depression, where in Love for Sale people actually seem to live richer lives than in the modern prosperous era. Without glamorizing the hard times of the past, this cozy mystery, starring a brother and sister team, makes us long for the days of white gloves, croquet, and milk delivered to the door.
But milk isn't all Lily and Robert Brewster find on the doorstep of the manor their late great-uncle left them. In true cozy mystery form, the unsuspecting amateur detectives discover a missing grade school teacher, uncover Road to Perdition-style mob activity as well as political conspiracy aimed at President Roosevelt's election (and you thought the President Bush-Senator Kerry grudge match was nasty), and figure out who killed Charles Pottinger (a.k.a. the radio preacher Brother Goodheart) in their very house. Seems there was more than Bible-thumping going on among the Reverend and his friends, who include the bizarre Nobby Hazard (reminiscent of Renfrew in Dracula, minus the vermin eating). Who would want to kill Brother Goodheart? How about his illegitimate son, who is tossed out as an interesting, if predictable, red herring that never goes anywhere and remains a loose end? Why do we detect the hint of a lesbian quarrel in the disappearance of the schoolteacher?
And why question any of these things? Thanks to Jill Churchill's vivid tale of a bygone era, we can enjoy genteel times again without the Depression and with the whodunit. Much grace and favor to Jill Churchill.

Didn't really like it........2007-04-03
I've read A Love So Strong, Crossing Jhordan's River, and One Prayer Away. LOVED ALL THREE. I found the first two Grace books, and FLAG and BOG were letdowns. I realized they came first, and KNB was probably fine tuning her flow, but I just could not get into these. I ended up skimming them on the train. Not terrible books, but definitely not repeats like her others for me.
Wonderful read.......2006-11-23
I loved this book it had elements of drama, humour (the two mothers were funny but I felt there as a bit of overkill with those two it started to get annoying to read) and romance. Yes there is a fairy tale aspect to the story - the hero and heroine seem too perfect to be true- they have the perfect courtship with no drama whatsoever maybe cos Grace spent most of the time in a coma- lol. Anyway this is a good start to a lovely series. However an element of realism is there in regards to Derrick's response to his mother's death. It does makee one think this is where one's faith really is tested and how most of us probably would truly behave if we were in his shoes.
Truly a Dream Come True.......2006-10-03
I really enjoyed this novel by Kendra Norman-Bellamy. She is an extrodinary writer when it comes to Christain books. It was soft and sincere. Also emotional. All I can say to sum this book up is 'You Go Girl'. Because this is truly every Christain as well as non-christian dream come true. Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The first but no the last.......2006-06-22
This book was great. I laughed, I cried, I even found myself praying. This book blessed my soul and my spirit so. Greg was definitely a man of God. He handled the situation with Derrick well. Even in the mist of all his trials and tribulation he still believed God. Mattie and Lena tripped me out. They were so funny. That's what a real friendship is all about. This book can definitely teach we as Christians a lesson. Kendra keep doing what you are doing. This was my first book that I had read that was wrote by Kendra Norman-Bellamy, but let me tell you this won't be my last.

Book Description
If God is love, why are so many Christians fearful, and why do so many church leaders sound hateful? Two controversial pastors address issues the church won't face, calling us to restore grace as the center of the Christian life.
o In If Grace Is True, Pastors Philip Gulley and James Mulholland revealed their belief that God will save every person. They now explore the implications of this belief, and its power to change every area of our lives. They attempt to answer one question: If we took God's love seriously, what would our world look like?
Gulley and Mulholland argue that what we believe is crucial and dramatically affects the way we live and interact in the world. Beliefs have power. The belief in a literal hell where people suffer eternally has often been used by the Church to justify hate and violence, which contradicts what Jesus taught about love and grace. The authors present a new vision for our personal, religious, and corporate lives, exploring what our world would be like if we based our existence on the foundational truth that God loves every person.
Gulley and Mulholland boldly address many controversial issues people in the pews have wondered about but churches have been unwilling to tackle. For too long, the Christian tradition has been steeped in negativity, exclusion, and judgment. Gulley and Mulholland usher us into a new age––an age where grace and love are allowed to reign.

Either you get it or you don't.......2007-04-16
I've already shared this book with my closest loved one, and I intend to get copies for other members of my family. With humility and humor, the authors explain their personal revelations, concerning the ultimate salvation of everyone. One of the important things that has been lost amongst all the bickering, about who's right and wrong, which ironically is covered extensively by the authors, is the fact that these are personal revelations that they decided to share with anyone who has an open mind and heart. I found many of the details of their own experiences with christianity, mirror my own. I left the 'church' long ago. I had my own personal revelations and found fellowship with others who are spiritually like minded and never looked back. I stumbled on this book at a friends' home, but I know it was a blessing that was delivered to me. What people fail to comprehend is that anytime they are in earshot of a sermon, they are listening to someone elses interpretation of scripture. So it makes no sense to berate these fellas for having an opinion. If the Christ appeared today, he would be crucified again, faster than you can say Easter. The world would sadden me beyond comprehension, except for the fact that I know everything and everybody will be alright in the end.
Wonderful........2007-03-09
While I do not agree with the authors on their "salvation for everyone," I do agree with virtually everything else in the book. I would love discuss this book with the authors one day.
Out of my Comfort Zone.......2007-03-09
This book and their other, "If Grace is True," were the basis of a spiritual breakthrough in my life. I devoured them both, I underlined and highlighted line after line. For the first time in my life, all my questions were being answered and everything I had thought/believed/questioned started to fall into place. Both challenged me beyond my comfort zone...questions about spirit, religion, politics and patriotism. It wasn't always fun but it was so so good for me.
Smorgasbord Christianity.......2007-01-05
Phillip (or the publisher) 'reels' in the reader (especially the Christian reader) with a catchy subtitle about rediscovering Grace (which I would argue is what we all need to be about - all the time). The important point that he makes early is that we all need to rediscover God's Grace so we can live graciously in an ungracious world.
So what is my beef with his book? In his great quest for spiritual answers, Phillip has decided that he is greater than God. For he states, up front, the rather bizzare claim that "all will be saved". He then goes on to take the Bible WAY out of context to "prove" his point.
He wants us to believe that all will eventually be "goodness and light" - he professes not to believe in Satan - etc, etc.
The SERIOUS problem that I have with his book is that he absolutely fails to deal with the issue of evil in this world. If we are all going to be saved, and there is no devil, or satan, or evil force - then why is there so much violence, hatred, and malice in the world today. Phillip does not have an answer for that, simply because he has decided to lift a brand of 'goodness' theology from the Bible, and has refused to acknowledge the greater truth - that salvation only comes from Jesus Christ, because man is inherrantly evil at his core, and cannot save himself, or enter a relationship with God by himself, without Christ. His refuses to believe this CORE tenat of the Christian faith, and his solution to his unbelief is to write this book to essentually say "Look, I know what the Bible said, but what you (the reader) read in the Bible is NOT the truth. I know better and I am going to tell you". In taking this approach, Phillip has taken on the very blasphemous role of deciding that he knows God better than Jesus did, and that he is a better truth-teller than Jesus. How arrogant.
This bad theological message should come accross loud and clear to the mature Christian reader. The danger of the book is that it has the potential to lull many Christians into thinking that Jesus didn't mean what he said when he said things like "heaven can only be entered through a narrow gate" and "at that day I will say ... depart from me, for your deeds were evil"
Phillip Gulley practices a brand of Smorgasbord Christianity that is akin to eating Chinese fast food - it leaves you feeling full and satified, but in only a few hours you find yourself hungering for more, and you have that dissatifying, empty feeling.
I found it an interesting, thought provoking read for a mature Christian who is very grounded in solid biblical truths. All others should stay away.
Please, come to the Scriptures with humility.......2006-10-11
My mother has been friends with Mr. Mulholland and his family for several years, and she and I will both testify that he is a kind man with good intentions. However, we are both saddened by the message he and the other writer put forward in this book and his other works. I sincerely hope that readers of this book will not embrace everything that is said without also going to the scriptures to examine his claims. I feel this issue is important enough to warrant such extended study, and I hope you do as well.
