A Shy Man With Inner Strength of Iron.......2005-06-26
I have seen Chuck Norris interviewed on several TV shows and he comes across as a very soft spoken shy man, yet you can tell he has a very powerful inner strength. In his career he has helped countless young people who doubted themselves to pick themselves up from despair and a feeling of uselessness and to believe in themselves and to do something great with their lives. He cares for his fellow man and has given of himself when he didn't have to. This book allows you to see inside his heart and to see and feel the struggles he has gone through and conquered. Chuck Norris is a Winner and so is this book. It is definitely a must read. Someone should do a movie on his life! He started at the bottom (he failed his first black belt test) and came out on top.
I came away with More Respect for the man..........2004-08-05
I like action movies, and TV. Chuck Norris is reliable and delivers in his films. But this book reveals a depth of character that seems to be depressiongly rare in the entertainment business.
In the end, Mr. Norris is an optimist.
He thinks that things will eventually work out OK.
He thinks that people can overcome adversity.
H thinks that people can succeed if they really apply thmeselves.
But he notes that success is rarely easy. Persistence and attitude are everything, and that strong character is essential. What are the elements of a strong character? According to Chuck Norris, they include the same qualities that The Boy Scouts and other institutions which claim to build character stress: Honesty, bravery, humility, humor, loyalty, commitment to truth, learning, duty, assissting others, etc.
If this book has a cental falw, it is the long (and often tedious) sections detailing some of Mr. Norris' films. But woven in wiht the narratives are some excellent insights into the value of strong character.
In the value free world of entertainment and media, Chuck Norris is not afraid or ashamed to state that "right" and "wrong" are valid and applicable concepts. He gives several concreate examples to express his life philosophy and the validity thereof. Being didactic and judgemental are often frowned upon in media, entertainment, and publishing. But Norris makes a case 9with anecdotes and examples) that sound judgements premised or rooted upon well-formed values, are a positive thing.
In the end, a portrait emerges of a man shaped by his values, not his past. And Chuck Norris had a very hard start in life. But he decided that he would not fall into despair; instead, he would rise above expectations, and succeed.
I can recommend this book for many reasons. THe two main reasons I do so are that it dispels the cyncial belief that honesty and good values are no longer worth anything. And in the end, Chuck Norris' life story serves as an inspirational motivator; to go out and make something of oneself.
This is a very positive book, and one I highly recommend.
A "Not-So-Common" Common Man's Journey!.......2003-08-30
Martial arts and film buffs will enjoy this book, which is a straightforward autobiography (written with the assistance of Joe Hyams). Be forwarned that this book was published in 1988 (at least my hardcover version), so the filmography doesn't cover his more recent works.
Norris describes his experiences from childhood, to the time spent in the armed forces, where he originally took up the matrial art of Tang Soo Do under Jae-chul Shin (who today runs the World Tang Soo Do Association).
This volume describes Norris's tournament days, including quite a bit about his competition experiences. There is also information about his family life, his entry into film making during his time as a karate (Tang Soo Do) instructor, and his experiences as a self-made actor in Hollywood. Throughout, he is honest as he describes his triumphs and mistakes.
Chuck Norris is the quintessential all-American guy who worked his tail off, took a big gamble, and came out on top. This book describes his journey from average joe, to martial arts instructor, to professional film star. This book includes two sections of photographs which show Norris from childhood, with family, in the services, in karate competition, and during the filming of his movies.
The Secret of Inner Strength.......2002-11-28
I thought I knew Chuck Norris before buying this book. But what I found was nothing that I ever expected. Chuck had a hard life and had health problems that he had to over come, talk about bad luck, nothing came easy for him, not even being born! If you are into self improvement or want a really inspiring story, buy this book and read it over and over again, the knowledge contained is great. It has a whole system of self development contained within, I have so much to say on this book, but read it for yourself, it's worth every penny!
Inner look at a remarkable human being.......2001-08-21
This book is a must for all people of all ages. Whether your a Chuck Norris fan or not. As one review put it, he lays his emotions and home life on the table. I found it so intriguing that I couldn't put the book down for long periods of time, because I wanted to know more. This book has begun to open my eyes to look inside myself. I'm so motivated that I am going to get his second inner strength book about ZEN! This book is easy to read and he is an inspiring teacher. It's so good that I don't want to give the book up!

When doctor and author Rachel Naomi Remen (Kitchen Table Wisdom) was young, she was caught between two different views of life: that of her rabbi grandfather and that of her highly academic, research-oriented parents, who believed religion was the opiate of the masses. As Remen gravitated toward academics and serving the world as a medical doctor, her grandfather became an "island of mysticism in a vast sea of science." But over time, Remen discovered that two seemingly divergent paths could lead to the same destination, especially as she learned to blend her spiritual beliefs with her medical treatment.
Remen uses the heart-rending stories of her patients to teach readers how to follow in her example, that is, combining a life of service with a life of receiving and giving blessings (a combination that avoids common problems such as burnout, self-sacrifice, and navel gazing). Remen also includes personal stories of her grandfather, who showered the world with his mystical beliefs and wizened blessings. While this story-by-story structure is similar to the bestselling Kitchen Table Wisdom, it is still a tearful and satisfying formula. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
As a small child, Rachel Remen sat at the feet of her grandfather, an orthodox rabbi and scholar of the kabbalah, and learned the secret of life: that love and blessings given to others heals our loneliness, unhappiness, and in fact all our wounds. Remen uses her power as a master storyteller to bring to life the extraordinary blessings of ordinary existence. These exquisite pieces show us how we bless and serve each other most often without knowing it, how much life gives to us, and how many of our own blessings we have still yet to receive.
There is nothing more comforting than hearing Rachel's grandfather speak of love, life, and God to a small, lonely, and very spiritual child who was trying to find her way in an unspiritual world. These are stories for keeping at the bedside, for those dark nights when we go out in search of our souls.
Rachel's grandfather has blessed not only his beloved granddaughter but, through her, has blessed us all.

Beautiful.......2007-09-24
I love this book - it's absolutely beautiful. The stories can help you grow. I would recommend this treasure to anyone.
A Blessing to Read.......2007-09-14
Easy to Read, Much food for thought.....Life lessons for all of us to learn and use. Short chapters with a new theme in each. Can read short snippets at a time.
A Blessing In Itself.......2007-07-22
I feel bad. Apparently, I'm only the 6th person out of 47 people to give this book anything less than a 5-star rating. And there's only one reason I did that. As a writer myself, I feel that there are too many stories in this book. Some of these little narratives just aren't as powerful or focused as others. And I would have left them out. But please don't let that get in the way of your enjoyment of this wonderful work. It is every bit as inspiring, uplifting, and profound as most of the other reviewers say it is. I especially like the common theme I see running through most of the pieces presented here. And that's the idea that the wholeness of an individual not only includes his or her health, talents and accomplishments, but his or her pain, suffering, shortcomings, and illnesses, too. In life we are called to embrace it all, and resist nothing. And that is the key to a life that is truly fulfilling and rewarding.
Steven Lane Taylor, author of Row, Row, Row Your Boat: A Guide For Living Life In The Divine Flow
One not to be missed.......2007-05-19
I have found My Grandfather's Blessings to be among the most moving books I have ever read. Each brief story can stand on its own. The author relates a simple incident, as many of us have lived, but then goes on in a simple and succinct manner to reveal a deeper meaning within the experience. Ms. Remen does not talk down to the reader, but rather sweeps us up into the experience with her. Upon finishing this book, I immediately ordered five more and sent them out to friends.
A wonderful surprise!.......2007-05-10
A friend recommended this book to me, but I wasn't that interested in reading it because the title sounded too sentimental. I took a chance on it anyway and found it to be one of the best books I've read in a long time. It's not sentimental at all. It's a series of true accounts from the author about what it really means to be connected to one another and what it really means to be a human being--open, vulnerable, and accessible. Death too is included in our human experience, meeting it with trust and intelligence. It's a book you can take your time with, savor, and pass along to a true friend.

Book Description
The women of the Bible have a strong, relevant message for women today that has been lost underneath layers of traditional interpretations and the expectation that God does his most important work through men. Crucial dimensions of their lives have been muted, forgotten, or passed over. Their strong voices are silent at a time when women are searching for answers that will hold up under the pressures and challenges confronting them today. This book brings the women of the Bible into the twenty-first century by recovering their powerful message for contemporary women.

Lost Women of the Bible.......2007-09-26
I lead a women's bible study for 20 women. Lost Women of the Bible is a wonderful study filled with thought provoking ideas and questions for reflection. After every chapter we enjoy vibrant discussions of the study and the women in it. It has given us a new perspective on the role God has set forth for us.

A Thoughtful Look at Many Biblical Women.......2007-01-22
Having been a feminist Evangelical Christian for many years (yes, such creatures do exist!), I've read plenty of books on women and the Bible, women in the Bible, and what the Bible says about women. Having had a long break on this subject, I decided to jump back in with this book.
One of the greatest strengths of this book is the author's look at a variety of women and attempting to flesh out their lives. I appreciate her perspective as someone who truly longed to have her life fit the traditional wife and mother role, yet found herself disappointed and confused when that didn't happen. Although my personal path has been different -- I'm ambivalent on the idea of perhaps someday having a husband and kids (and having worked with kids for a few years I find myself even more convinced that they're great for awhile, but then I'm ready to send them home); this was in fact one of the reasons I became a feminist (I got so frustrated with people telling me that I must LONG to be married and have kids when I did not in fact have this desire, and felt God calling me in other directions, at least for the time being) -- I could appreciate the hard questions she asked herself. Furthermore, I appreciated some of her responses. Throughout history, countless women have ended up living their whole lives without ever becoming a wife or mother. Some longed to but never received that joy; others felt no particular interest or knew they were called in other directions. Many of those women were genuine Christians trying to follow God. Logically, if these two paths were God's only calling for women, why did some never get that chance? And why were many of the women who never did get the chance still considered holy followers of God?
I also enjoyed the women she looked at. Some of the women -- Sarah, Esther, and the two Marys, among others -- are frequently written about or discussed. Others get more scant mention. I think my favorite chapter was about Hagar. I have long loved her, and loved the way that God turned His gaze towards a lowly slave considered just property by her owners. The chapter on Tamar was also good, although a part of me was a bit surprised. I hadn't heard many comments about her, and although at one point in time I had thought she hadn't acted well I eventually came to the conclusion that she was acting in the most righteous way she could see (note that she doesn't pretend to be a prostitute until years of waiting have shown her she has no other option, and she doesn't linger to find a few more customers just in case she didn't get pregnant from Judah; she very deliberately enticed one of two men -- the other being Judah's third son -- that was legally required to provide what she had to get by tricking him). It surprised me to hear that Tamar had such a bad reputation in many Christian circles. Be that as it may, I felt like the author did a good job of drawing out the specific circumstances in her life and pointing out that although her exact methods might no longer be appropriate, her desires and ultimate motives do provide a positive example.
I only had one major criticism of the book (well, two, but the second is merely a matter of personal taste). Much of her fleshing out of the biblical characters came from logical consideration of both the text and of the way that humans usually act. None of her conclusions and guesses were far-fetched. Sometimes, however, she forgot that they were guesses and called them facts. For example, she wrote that "Hannah always felt the enormity of her sacrifice, as any mother would." Or about Mary Magdalene that, "Mary wasn't seeking Jesus.... Mary was a demoniac... [who] wanted Jesus to go away." Or that, "No matter what happened afterward [i.e., after the Crucifixion], Mary never erased those horrifying images from her memory." Now, none of these surmises are false; in fact, I'm guessing they're true. Hannah undoubtedly felt Samuel's loss all her life. As the author points out, demoniacs in the Bible never sought Jesus out, and Mary probably didn't either. And I can't imagine being able to forget seeing one of your dearest friends tortured as Jesus was. None of these are bad assumptions. Assumptions, however, is the correct name for them. Had the author been more careful about this I would have been happier with the book (this is the reason for the 4 stars).
The other detail that I wished were changed was the women she dealt with. I had no problems with the ones she picked; I just wish she would have picked more! (this is probably a good sign about the quality of the book) As I read it, I kept making a list of other women I would like to have her include in "Lost Women of the Bible II". Some of them included: Rebeckah (sp?), Leah, Rachel, Dinah, the two Hebrew midwives, Miriam, Rahab, the murdered concumbine from Judges (along with Lot's daughters, actually; they could have their own chapter), Deborah (how could she have left out DEBORAH???), Abigail, Bathsheba, Priscilla, Tabitha/Dorcas, the woman at the well, and so on. I would even have liked a look at some of the REAL "bad girls" such as Delilah, Jezebel, or Israel's one reigning queen (Athaliah, I think); a look at their lives, their strengths, and how they used those strengths in sinful ways not intended by God (plus a look at the ways they've been used throughout the ages against women, and any positive lessons we can learn from them) would be interesting reading.
In general, I would highly recommend this book (I was spending most of my reading trying to figure out which friend I was going to loan it to first). It gives cause for thoughtful contemplation of women in the Bible, and what it means to be both a woman following her true God-given calling (which may include marriage and children, both good things given as gifts by God, but may not) and a man encouraging and being encouraged by women doing these things.
When a woman's place is not only in the home..........2007-01-14
Carolyn Custis James' book offers hope to women who don't fit the traditional Christian woman mould (wife and mother and support to husband's ministry). She herself found that marriage and motherhood came very late and consequently she wrestled with her position and value within the church as a single woman; but these are not modern problems, she found many examples in the Bible of women who couldn't fit into those roles and yet had great value.
The author features women from both Old and New Testaments - Eve, Mrs Noah, Sarah, Hagar, Tamar, Hannah, Esther, Mary of Nazareth, Mary Magdalene and the women of Philippi - who have different stories of their contribution to God's plans. These stories also show the failures of the women as well as their successes and some, such as Tamar, are partially rehabilitated through a fresh look at the story. Many of these women struggled against cultural situations that are no longer relevant to our Western society and yet the underlying themes were all valid.
The book is well-written in a light and readable style with good scholarship underlying the historical settings. Each chapter has a study guide at the end so I imagine this book might work well for a women's group. The overall conclusion of so many of these stories is that women don't have to just be meek, mild, pure homemakers but can be strong warriors for God alongside their husbands, if they have them, or on their own. Definitely an encouraging read for any women who want to make a difference for God.
Awesome Job!.......2006-12-10
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I found it amazing how you were able to write down all the thoughts I could never verbalize. Thank you for showing me that I am in charge of defining my life and not allowing others define it for me.

These Stories Will Make You Laugh, and Make You Cry.......2002-09-02
This was my first CUP OF COMFORT experience. I bought it because my friend Dera Williams has a story in it, and I wanted to read her story about quilting as a legacy. Well, I thoroughly enjoyed Dera's story, and then I started reading the book from the beginning and was quickly pulled in by the beautifully told stories by women who, although just like me, each had her own story to tell. Stories that uplifted me, and made me think of life's possibilities. I highly recommend this book to any woman who needs a little inspiration to kick-start her day, or week, or year!

Book Description
“They also serve who only stand and wait.”
—John Milton, “On His Blindness”
Their husbands went to war in Iraq; they went to war in their living rooms. Shared Courage is the story of one woman’s experience as the wife of a Marine officer serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom. A colorful, sometimes heartbreaking, always inspiring account of how military life affected one family, it is also the story of an entire community of Marine wives--the family of the American forces.
Michelle Keener describes the trials and triumphs of keeping a military family together--from her wedding to her husband’s assignment to 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines (the famous “McCoy’s Marines”) and the birth of a daughter in the base hospital. She brings to poignant life the uncertainty she and other Marine wives experienced; their fear in the face of media reports of the advance on Fallujah, one of the war’s most harrowing battles; the gut-wrenching knock on the door, with a Marine in dress blues standing on the front step; the coming together in shared grief over the loss of a friend’s husband; and eventually, the elation of having one’s own husband return home safely.
With this book, Keener gives a voice to all military wives--those who receive little notice and no medals, and yet sacrifice in countless ways. Even as they stood and waited, these wives also served.
Customer Reviews:
A Truly Enlightening Story.......2007-09-08
As a Marine mom, I thought I knew all the ups and downs of a deployment. This book helped me realize that, although we are close to our children, they do not tell us everything. They need to be brave. Using your own experiences as a microcosm in a world of heartache and fear can be risky and daring. It is not easy to be a learning experience for others. Thank you, Michelle, for your bravery. Your husband, colleagues, and all military families should be proud that someone spoke for those left behind. I learned a great deal from Michelle's writing and am sure others will also. I highly recommend this book. You will laugh, you will cry, you will come to understand the humanity and emotions of the "war" at home and the courage it takes to support, to wait and to hope.
My Learning through Her Sharing.......2007-08-21
I love reading a book in which I get to know the characters. In this case, the "characters" are genuine, real people. Michelle opens herself in order to show others the difficult situation of the deployment of a spouse. I had no idea it was so complex. I have a new understanding and empathy toward those families who have loved ones in combat zones. I truly appreciate their sacrifice.
What I learned from this book was how to approach this spouse: With a sincere "Thank you." They truly did sacrifice so that I could live in peace.
Thank you, Michelle. Thank you to all who served by going or staying home. I'm deeply indebted to you all.
This book is fun to read, and helpful as well.
Saved me.......2007-07-21
My husband of a year and a half left for his third tour...second to Iraq. This has been so difficult and I really feel like I have no where to turn. My husband's grandparents bought me this book and sent it to me from Virginia; where they saw the newspaper article about Mrs. Keener. I couldn't put the book down. I'd read it at night with a flash light while our baby was asleep. I cried through an entire chapter and finished in just a few weeks. I really wish there were more books like this because I've got 4 more months and I need something good to read!
great help.......2007-07-19
For any military wife going through a deployment, or entering their life in the service through teher spouse, this book is perfect. The author gave me some great laughs and tears but helped me to better understand what I was going through. She also gave me great ideas for my husband who is about to go on his first deployment and how to cope while he's away. I recommend this book whole heartedly.
A Courageous Write, An Honest Story.......2007-06-22
Courage takes many forms and this is one of them! Michelle illustrates and highlights the daily acts of courage demonstrated by those "left behind" as they face everyday challenges armed with only love and hope. Each story is an example of courage in the face of fear; fortitude in the face of trepidation. These women act despite their fears and show strength when they feel weak. They face alone what most couples face together while supporting each other at home and loved ones half-a-world away. Michelle's courage and skill in writing this book, openly and honestly, is to be applauded and commended.

Book Description
From The Breast Cancer Book of Strength & Courage:
This was a special night, a night when I would share with the public one of the most private parts of my battle against breast cancer. This was the night I would share my story of hair loss. . . . Steve turned to me, the camera took a two shot, and there I was, for the first time in my life, anchoring a newscast without a strand of hair on my head.
It was quite a moment, for many reasons. Mainly, for me, it represented how far I'd come, and how much I'd grown! Cancer has become a journey of self-discovery that has helped me develop self-confidence and learn to love myself for myself.
— Anchorwoman Leslie Mouton, who reported the news in Texas one night while bald due to chemotherapy treatments
Perhaps you or a loved one has recently heard the words, "You have breast cancer." Now what? How can you turn these fearful words into the first step on a journey of strength and healing? You'll discover that these words are more powerful than you think. So powerful that they can help you uncover a level of bravery and fortitude you might not feel is possible right now—one that lies deep within you, ready to emerge, ready to fight. You can transform your feelings of dread and despair into triumph.
Inside, you'll discover intimate first-person accounts of breast cancer survivors, women who confronted their diagnosis, clutched the thoughts, hopes, and encouragement already present in their daily lives, and embraced new ideas and old passions that helped sustain them during their struggle to restore their health.
These touching personal stories are told by special women who dug a little deeper to climb the biggest mountain of all. Their reassuring words are like having a welcome friend come to you in a moment of need—an invaluable source of strength, wisdom, love, and laughter. Page after page, you'll learn not only how to survive, but also how to forge a powerful and positive mental attitude.
An official book tie-in with Cure Breast Cancer, Inc. A portion of the royalties from this book will benefit breast cancer research, education, and outreach.

Inspiring yes, helpful info - no.......2006-04-25
This book is inspiring and entertaining with uplifting stories of women affected by cancer. The only thing I found discouraging is that so many people facing cancer don't question some of the treatments they receive and do more digging into what is available, rather than just giving into the status quo and taking whatever their doctor gives them without question. I am an alternative medicine fan, so of course, I was hoping to see more accounts of women taking the initiative in this book and opting for more alternative treatments, which wasn't there. One reviewer mentioned breast cancer as possibly a "gift of higher understanding," which I just don't see. As a matter of fact, I can't see any cancer as being a "gift" of any sort.
Surprisingly, not what you think!.......2002-11-22
A sensitive, well edited and written series of vignettes by, for, and about women and cancer. Forty six women share their stories, addressing depression, reflection, inspiration, information, and retrospection of facing cancer. But it is more than another breast cancer book; it is a celebration of women and their wealth of responses to adversity. This is a must-read for any woman facing her own or a friend's cancer, or for any man who loves or cares for a woman facing a medical challenge.
Review of The Breast Cancer Book of Strength and Courage.......2002-11-21
"The Breast Cancer Book of Strength and Courage" was a wonderful source of comfort and encouragement. Having been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, I could truly relate to the feelings other women in the book experienced. I too had to make so many decisions in a short period of time. As I read the book, I realized how many other women had been in that same terrifying place, and how many women met the challenge of healing head on. Every woman's cancer is different, but the feelings that accompany the daignosis are the same. I truly appreciate the honesty and the willingness of all of the survivors who shared their stories. I would highly recommend the book to all women with breast cancer and to their families.

Book Description
Your digital camera is more than new incarnation of your old film camera. Yes, it still produces photos, but it also offers new outlets for creativity, including instant gratification of seeing your photos now, the ability to experiment without worrying about expense, the technology to fine-tune your photos with advanced professional techniques, and the means to share your work instantaneously with anyone, anyplace in the world. It's no wonder that digital cameras are outselling traditional cameras for the first time ever. But the question most digital camera users ask is this, "How do I get from taking 'decent' photos to doing the things I'd really like to do? How do I tap into that potential?" Digital Photography Hacks is your passport to taking the kind of digital photos you've always aspired to. Written by Derrick Story, photographer and author of Digital Photography Pocket Guide and other books, it goes beyond the standard fare of most digital photography books--such as camera basics, understanding memory cards, and when to use a flash--to the things that professional photographers have learned through thousands of shots' worth of experience, years of experimentation, and fiddling and hacking. The book includes a foreword by photographer Rick Smolan, author of America 24/7. With exquisite, full-color photos throughout, the book presents a collection of tips, tricks, and techniques for photographers ready to move beyond the basics. And if you don't have the latest in digital camera photography, this book will show you how to extend the life and functionality of your existing camera. All the hacks in the book are platform-agnostic, designed for use on both Mac on Windows-based computers. You'll find 100 proven techniques in the areas of:
- Daytime and nighttime photo secrets
- Flash magic
- Digital camera attachments
- The computer connection
- Photoshop magic
- Fun photo projects
- Camera phone tricks
This book is for the photographer you are now, and the one you want to be. Digital Photography Hacks is for the creative adventurer who resides in each of us.
Customer Reviews:
Be prepared to spend money to take advantage of hacks.......2007-08-19
Weaknesses: A surprisingly large percentage of the hacks require you to spend money on devices or software. To take best advantage of this book you should own an SLR camera, Photoshop, and a camera phone. Some of the advice, such as fill flash, is drawn from standard photographic techniques that you could get from any book.
Strengths: Here and there one can find useful techniques. For example, he has good ideas on eliminating red eye. Some of the recommended items are inexpensive and worth looking into. The book also does a good job of telling the advantages and disadvantages of the devices and software he recommends.
Excellent Book, Very Clever Ideas.......2007-03-26
I was very pleasantly surprised to finally get a book on digital photography that was page after page, completely full of all new ideas! The title says it all. In this book you will find various work arounds, short cuts and generally smarter way of doing things. Lots of insiders tips that the pros know, but the rest of us plebs don't.
This is one book you will come back to again and again. Extremely useful!
Enjoy
Useful Hacks for you digital camera.......2006-01-14
Digital Photography Hacks is a part of O'reilly's hacks series, which provide tricks and solutions for different fields. This book gives you tips and tricks when dealing with your digital camera.
I read this book after reading Digital Photography Guide for the same writer, Direck. So, I found myself comparing between the two books and found the Digital Photography Hacks is an extension for the Digital Photography Guide. These tips and tricks complete your knowledge with some useful methods to create professional photos using tools and things around you.
If you know your camera well, you will find this book very useful and open your mind for new tricks to produce professional photos. However, if you were a beginner in digital photography I would prefer to start with Direck's Digital Photography Guide.
Useful Tips, But Lots of Tips are Neither Hacks nor Industrial-Strength.......2006-01-14
I am an amateur photographer and I did learn a number of useful things from this book. However, I am rating it a 3, primarily because it contains few information on what I really bought this book for: to take better photos using my digital camera. I got the Digital Photography Pocket Guide, 2nd Edition by the same author at the same time as this book, and that one taught me more about how to take better digital photos.
There are really cool and useful stuff written in this book like eliminating bars from animal cages and using pantyhose to get some special effects; good suggestions on using tripods and flashes. These are what makes this book worthwhile.
But then, this book also contains lots of "tips" that I do not find very useful. Perhaps it is because it lacks focus and it doesn't consider what most readers already have. Whether this book is geared towards the novice photographer or someone who has a point-and-shoot or an SLR is unclear. Most "hacks" suggested by computer books will assume you only have the main software and may suggest you download few additional ones that are mostly free. This book has a number of tips that need additional equipment costing more than $100. I wanted to try out taking portraits using two external flashes as this book suggested, only to find out that the two external flashes can cost me $500!
Furthermore, there are a few suggestions that although useful, I find to be inappropriately labeled as an industrial-strength hack. Yes, an iPod can be used to store your photos. Even if there may be iPod owners who may have missed that, I don't own an iPod and I surely know it can store photos already even before this book told me so. It is cool that you can take photos and use your camera phone to communicate in a foreign country, but again, this info did nothing to make me a better photographer
Neat Little Photo Book.......2005-11-08
Be prepared, this book has no real theme. It is a hodgepodge of interesting stuff. The photoshop section is very good, which is surprising, as that is not the focus of the book. However, I learned a good deal from that section. Some of this stuff most people will never use, but it definately gets you thinking. My favorite was using the camera as a scanner, when you don't have one handy.

Stories from real people.......2007-09-03
Real people telling real stories of their lung cancer experience. True stories of survival and hope. Very good read and very informative.
A different sort of book on cancer.......2007-05-29
The personal stories included in "Voices of Lung Cancer" are poignant and true. These stories put a different face on lung cancer, and, amazingly, they're filled with hope and humor. Stories like Susan Long's "Rediscovering Daddy" and Barbara Terrell's "Now I Understand" give the disease a face and help others who are dealing with similar situations. The fact that Law & Order's S. Epatha Merkerson and Dr. Deborah Morosini, sister of Dana Reeve, have stories in the book only add to its interest. I highly recommend it. Shane Alexander.

Find out that you are not alone!.......2001-06-14
I am the webowner of the Mental Health Sanctuary and added a story to this book. When the book came out and I was able to read other's stories, not only was the book very interesting to read, but it helped to comfort me, realizing that what I endured in my life was shared by many people. I felt so much less alone as I read other people's stories - their hardships, their pain and how they worked through it - what gave them strength, etc.
If you are hurting and you are feeling alone and perhaps that there is no way out in your life, this book is for you. If you are a family member and you are having a difficult time understanding your loved one, this book is for you
A "must read" for anyone who is a human being.......2001-04-11
I could not put this book down. Each person's poignant story gave me a new understanding and compassion for mental illness of all kinds. I believe it will go a long way in healing the fear and stigma surrounding those who suffer from this kind of illness. As John Brown states in his introduction, "No one feels more lost, alone, misunderstood, confused, and hopeless than someone experiencing a depressive episode. This book will not only benefit the patient; it will also aid their family members, who are just as confused and bewildered."

ASIN: 1401901743 |
Book Description
One look at him and it seems like a sculptor created this sort of perfection. Champion bodybuilder Flex Wheeler has biceps of molded steel and a back that is so cut and sculpted that it looks like a mountain range. Fellow athlete and movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger has called him "one of the best bodybuilders of all time" and also insists that "Flex Wheeler is a fantastic champion. He has won the Arnold Classic many times and I've found him to be an extraordinary athlete. He is a winner."
"It's not just about building your body," Flex says. "It's about building the love in your heart for God and your family."
Flex Ability is a story of overcoming odds so awesome that most people would have just given up and called it a day. Flex Wheeler is a champion when it comes to bodybuilding. . . . Kenny Wheeler has proven that he's a champion when it comes to life. In this, his first book, Kenny takes you around the globe and into the winner's circle as he describes his two-decade journey through the tough sport of bodybuilding. He also brings you backstage at competitions, where personalities of 300-pound men clash, and into the private gyms of Los Angeles, where the puddles of sweat tell the story of what it takes to push your body to the max.
While telling the extremely personal story of his private struggles, Kenny shares how the abuse he suffered as a boy taught him how life isn't fair, but sometimes you just have to cope and rise above the ultimate challenges by finding your own inner strength. He shares never-before-told secrets about his current struggles, and how with the right mind-set, anyone can face trouble head-on and come out on the other side as a winner.
Customer Reviews:
Would the real Wheeler please stand up?.......2006-05-10
I enjoyed reading this book, but as time has passed and I have reflected upon it further, I have become more and more disappointed with it. Flex now writes for Muscular Development, and his pieces in there vary a great deal in the persona he projects. In FlexAbility he portrays himself as the quasi-innocent, long-suffering victim. The suspicious "ninja attack" which supposedly occurred right before an Olympia, thus forcing him to withdraw, is not even mentioned here, though surely it ought to be discussed--if it were real, because that would be a major event in his career; if it were invented, because only by 'fessing up would he really be honest. I think that in this book Wheeler is working really hard to convince the reader that he, Flex, is a good guy. He might be, but methinks this book doth protest too much.
must have for Flex fans.......2005-09-29
A must have for all bodybuilding fans. However it might be boring for someone who is not a fan.
Shameful, inaccurate, from an alleged "Christrian".......2005-05-23
I would give this book 0 stars if I could. Where do I start? First, I love bodybuilding. I read all of the muscle magazines every month, and have followed the "sport" for almost 20 years. Mr. Wheeler, who never misses a chance to remind everyone that he is a Christian, must not be 100% converted yet, because he lies throughout this book and wastes valuable paper with this gutless tome. For those who don't know, Mr. Wheeler has been one of the top ranked bodybuilders for over a decade. He recently had a kidney transplant because of a rare kidney disease that has tragically stricken NBA superstar Alonzo Mourning and Sean Elliot. The fact checkers, or is that liar enablers, that allowed Mr. Wheeler to say that these athletes did not disclose their disease when they retired (Mourning twice) should be fired and never be allowed in the industry again because they both spoke about it when they retired. Wheeler's past steroid use did not cause this problem, allegedly. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Mr. Wheeler regales us, or is that bores us to death, with stories about his numerous sexual conquests, of course while he was in relationships.
Wheeler details his troubling health problems because of his use of diuretics (taken to eliminate all water fromt the body to make someone look leaner). Amazingly, he collapsed at a show with the judges knowledge, and yet this supposed-truth-telling Christian, does not name those who knew about this and chose to ignore and enable this plague on our sport. Instead, Wheeler attempts to have his cake and eat it, too: put out a book to entice the legions of fans of bodybuilding, but because he is now competing again (drug-free???), he refuses to point fingers at a sport that has been ruined by bloated, drugged up freaks weighing 300 lbs. at 5-8-6-0. Wheeler had a unique opportunity to out the sycophants in the bodybuilding media, the pimp empire of Joe Weider, and the psycotic bodybuilders who have ruined this sport.
Wheeler refuses to even name the bodybuilder who famously accused him of having calf implants. This from a guy who claimed to be afraid of noone and brags of beating people senseless, but oh, that is because he was sexually abused, so it's ok, right.
One of his most notable lies is that bodybuilding magazines had annointed him the best bodybuilder...ever. Not one magazine has ever said that about Wheeler, simply because it is not true. That isn't a subjective analysis, it's a fact. He never even won the Mr. Olympia, the most important bodybuilding show. Also, he plays "the media was out to get me card." In fact, just the opposite is true. The press in bodybuilding don't really call anyone out because of their abusive, steroid-rage-induced attitudes; if they did, they would only be writing about the personalities of so many of these guys.
His training section is stupid as well. He was being trained by world class trainers (Charles Glass for one), yet he supposedly did three hours of cardio a day (yes, THREE hours a day). Any person with even the most rudimentary knowledge of bodybuilding knows that this is training suicide!!
His "bling-bling" descriptions would make P Diddy proud. By my count he had 11 cars at one point and 48,000 sq. ft. home.
Another great "Wheelerism": he says there is a dearth of research on his kidney disease because it primarily effects African-Americans. That's great Flex: play the race card, too.
He glosses over his steroid use/abuse, again because he was afraid of offending others in the "community." Pick up any bodybuilding magazine today and the descriptions of the current "stacks" of roids these freaks are taking will blow your mind. Bear in mind, these drugs are ILLEGAL. The reigning Mr. Olympia, Ronnie Coleman, was a police officer until two years ago. How do you reconcile ingesting massive amount of illegal drugs while serving as a police officer. Many of the athletes purchase steroids that are prescribed to horses.
What a shame that honorable, decent men such as Lee Haney, Sergio Olivia, and many others don't get a chance to write books. Instead, a bible abusing, philandering, ostentatious, drug addict does, and yet doesn't have the courage to address the many issues ruining the sport.
In light of the tragedy that has befallen juiceball, er, baseball, Mr. Wheeler's irresponsibility is even more apparent.
Thank you to Amazon.com

Honest and Thought Provoking.......2005-03-23
Once I started reading this book I could not put it down. Flex is very honest with painful stories from his childhood all the way to the present. When you read this book you understand exactly the pressures he was under during his bodybuilding career and in his personal life. In fact he was so honest, that at times I hated him, and at times I loved him, and you can tell that he's learned lessons from his life and is now a completely changed person.
I don't understand why some of the readers gave him such negative reviews. First, this is not a "training manual," it is a biography. Second, how can a reader really question Flex's extremes that he wrote about? Do you think he was lying about the size of his house or the number of cars he had? He states that now he realizes how foolish he was to blow all his money and not save anything. And how can a reader question the amount of work he put in when training for a show? I must say that 3 hours of cardio in a 24 hour period is extreme but it is certainly not uncommon for the few weeks leading up to a big show; how do you think the guys get to the level that he was on -- everything they do is extreme, from the amount of drugs they use to the amount of exercise they do to prepare for a show.
All in all a great in-depth story about an interesting guy living in the interesting world of pro bodybuilding.
