Matthew's review.......2006-02-13
I liked Andrew Lost Under Water. I learned that giant squids are rarely ever seen. It was funny when the steering wheel popped out and the waterbug went on auto-pilot. It was also funny when the waterbug got lava boogers from an under water volcano in its supper sniffer. The water bug is a car that has a few adjustments to make it go under water. I would recommend this book.

Interesting read ....... Highly Recommended ........... 5 stars
The Review
Far below the surface of the sea, Thudd the robot, ten year old inventor Drewd, and his thirteen year old cousin Judy have an eye-popping run in with Soggy Bob Sloggins. Drewd and Judy's top secret scientist Uncle Al just cannot stop inventing. Uncle Al's latest invention is the Water Bug.
Writer Greenburg has produced an engaging view into the underwater panorama world of the ocean. By combining humor, plain good writing, fast paced adventure and solid scientific fact `Andrew Lost' is a book sure to appeal to middle grade boys and girls alike. Without sounding like he is teaching; Thudd brings kids much information relating to the fascinating world teeming below the surface of the sea.
Fast paced, entertaining read. Happy to recommend.

great summer reading.......2006-06-17
"Henry Reed, Inc." is the first of a series of books about a fourteen-year-old boy who is the son of a diplomat. The book was written in the late fifties and is Henry's journal about what happens when he is sent to New Jersey to spend the summer with his relatives. His teacher gave him an assignment to report on the free enterprise system in the United States, so Henry starts a business. Soon he has acquired a dog and a business partner in the form of the girl next door, Midge. Their adventures are hilarious and innocent. All of the Henry Reed books are really entertaining and to me epitomize what a summer vacation should be about. They would be perfect for readers over ten.
Great for kids who are too old for kids books.......2005-03-18
Henry Reed is an unforgettable character, a strange mix of can-do entrepreneurialism and good-hearted goofiness who would make any parent proud.
This is the first book in a terrific series, and is a perfect transitional novel from children's reading to more adult fare. At 239 pages, it weighs in as a longer book than most readers will have tackled to date, and the writing is slightly more sophisticated than you would see in a Hardy Boys or early Judy Blume book, for example. I would compare it to the series "The Mad Scientists Club," which has the same type of humor and level of sophistication.
As for the story, it is presented as Henry's journal entries over the course of a summer that he spends with his uncle and aunt. He comes up with schemes that young teens will find exhilarating, because they are just wild enough to be exciting, and yet just realistic enough to be believed and emulated. Some of the plans are purely to make money-such as his attempts to find valuable truffles in the neighborhood. Some of them are research, as when he sends a large balloon up into the air bearing a pigeon to measure weather conditions. All of them are humorous and fun to read about, as he often bites off more than he can chew.
This is a terrific series that will not only entertain, but also inspire children to think about their own start-up businesses and scientific research. I highly recommend it.
britt from richview middle school.......2004-03-11
The main characters of the story are Henry and Midge. Henry moved here from Naples,Italy. They tried to start a research business out of a old barn. To find out more you will have to read this book.
An Adventure Book.......2004-01-03
(Review by a nine-year-old third-grader, who read this book for a home school assignment)
Henry Reed's story starts out when, for vacation, Henry goes to the USA. He has all kinds of adventures. Henry starts a research business. Then he meets a girl named Midge who wants to be part of his business. She says that she will give him two rabbits if he lets her join, but she only has one.
One adventure happens when Midge and Henry make a balloon and their dog and the neighbor's cat and a dead pigeon go up in the balloon. The cat jumps on his owner's roof and stays there for about a day.
I liked this book because their adventures are very exciting.
Henry Reed, Inc........2002-02-25
This is the first book in the Henry Reed series.
Henry Reed is a young teen living overseas because his father is an American diplomat. His parents decide to send him to rural New Jersey to spend the summer with his aunt and uncle. Henry fears boredom, but within the space of the first few days, he adopts a stray beagle and meets Midge Glass, who becomes his friend and business partner during this and subsequent summers.
Henry and Midge attempt to start a research company using his uncle's old barn and stray animals acquired along the way, but in what is to become a recurrent theme across the series, roadblocks, most of them humorous, result in anything but a routine venture.
This book, and the subsequent books in the series, are well-written, vivid in their imagery, and brimming with facts hidden in the context of a well-told story. The subject matter is appropriate for pre-teens and teens and there is no objectionable material for parents to be concerned about.
This and subsequent books suffer from an unavoidable culture clash between the period the books were written (this first one was in 1959), and today's faced-paced, electronic environment. Pre-teens and teens will have no trouble with the themes and concepts in the story, but may need to look up some antiquated things (presumably not many teens in today's Princeton, New Jersey know what a sickle bar is).
Highly recommended, but with a caution on the cultural relevance to today's children.

3rd garde readers love thiss!.......2007-07-09
I was introduced to this series by one of my new students. He raved, so I decided to give it a try. I now use it in my guided reading program. Along with some of the others of the series. It seems to have almost anything a student might want to read about. Great series to get boys to read!
Matthew's review.......2006-02-22
This book was about Andrew and Judy and Thudd in a whale. They got swallowed in a whale, they went through its three stomachs and got pooped out. They learned that a blue whale's intestines are 500 feet long and a person's intestines are only 13 feet long. I liked this book because I leaned stuff. I would recommend this book
Another fast Adventure.......2004-04-05
Wow! I did'nt think Andrew's and Judy's adventures could get muct better than 1-5 of the Andrew's books. But, here it is: Andrew lost in the Whale is my favorite! When Andrew shows Judy The Water Bug...it was no big deal. That changes really fast when he accidently pushes the Search for the Giant Sqiud button. It is at this point that Andrew, Judy, and Thud begin
an adventure that takes them to helping Whales and riding out terrible storms in the ocean near Hawaii. I loved this book and found every chapter holding my attention and keeping me on the edge of my seat.
2nd in a Andrew Underwater story.......2003-11-03
Andrew Lost: In The Whale is a continuation to Andrew Lost: Underwater. The 1st-4th are all a continued story. But in Andrew Lost: Underwater, is a all new story. Andrew Lost: In the whale is a good story. Andrew, Judy, & Thudd get swollowed by a Blue Whale. They can brethe through their bubble duds, but the bubble duds will come apart after 2 hours. Will Andrew, Judy, & Thudd escape in time? Find out in Andrew Lost: In the whale.

Roger Fry: A Biography
ASIN: 0226266427 |
Book Description
In the first decades of the twentieth century, the art critic Roger Fry introduced English-speaking audiences to modern French art and formalist aesthetic theory. A Roger Fry Reader, edited by Christopher Reed, brings together for the first time a comprehensive selection of Fry's essays. Most appear here for the first time since their original publication in scholarly journals and art magazines, while some have never been published before. Representing 40 years of engagement with the arts, the essays cover a broad spectrum of topics, from Fry's influential promotion of Post-Impressionism to art education, museums, architecture, decorative art, and the implications of literature and dance for the visual arts. Reed also provides valuable historical background and considers Fry's legacy for the present. A Roger Fry Reader affords an opportunity to examine both the foundations of modern art criticism from the point of view of one of its foremost practitioners and current debates about the nature ofart and aesthetic experience.

On The Road with Down Girl and Sit.......2007-06-26
Any dog lover can identify with this book. It is written from the dog's point of view. She thinks her name is Down Girl, and her best friend is Sit. They really don't like Here Kitty, Kitty, who lives behind them. I found it to be hilarious, and I've read it over and over, just for the laughs.
Another great "Down Girl & Sit" book.......2007-03-31
This is the 2nd book Lucy Nolan has written from the viewpoint of a dog "Down Girl". It is just as funny & clever as the first. A very enjoyable read-aloud for all ages. You will laugh.
Book Description
This reader for advanced students of Chinese presents ten post-1990 short stories by prominent writers such as Su Tong and Yu Hua, whose novels Raise the Red Lantern and To Live served as the basis for internationally acclaimed films. With its captivating content dealing with current social issues, it fills a gap in the literature for advanced language students who are eager to read extensively in "real" literature. Vocabulary lists free the student from the chore of constantly consulting a dictionary while reading, grammar and usage examples highlight new patterns, and questions for discussion explore the literary content. This all-fiction collection of contemporary works can be used as a text in language or literature courses or can be read independently.
Customer Reviews:
A great book but..........2006-01-12
I don't like some of the stories being "tampered with": the authors have abridged some of the longer stories and made changes in wording. This may be OK for the target audience (students) but I would still prefer to enjoy these stories in their original form...
In incredible source for advanced students of Chinese.......2004-04-10
This is a worthwhile book for any student of Chinese because if fills several important gaps in the materials currently available for Chinese students.
Of these gaps, the greatest is that no single source provides a good sampling of truly modern Chinese writers. Most Chinse Readers are composed of fiction pieces drawn from the Grandfathers of Chinese fiction, like Lao She, Lu Xun, Xu Zhimo, and Zhu Ziqing. These are all great writers, but most of them were dead before I was born, and wrote most prolificaly in the 1930s.
On the other hand, for those who are interested in currently poplular authors, and contemporary Chinese culture and language, it can be hard to find materials.
This book provides these materials in several key ways:
1. There are 10 different authors in this book, who are all current (all the stories are post-1990) and who write in very different styles. This way, with one book, you can get to know a number of writers, and learn what you like and what you don't in modern Chinese literature. (This is an important step in finding more books to read in Chinese)
2. The book is in Jianti Zi. If you are like me, and live on the west coast, Chinese books aren't hard to find, but they are almost universaly from Taiwan or Xiang Gang, and as a result are all published in Fanti Zi. Nothing against that, but American students should realize that you don't pick one or the other. Most college educated Chinese (or Taiwanese) can read both, and I think it realy is important to be familiar with both ways of writting. Thus, this can help balance the distribution of Traditional to Simplified texts.
3. This book is largely uncensored and casual. Thus, it provides a usefull context for understanding many of the verbal mannerisms and coarse language in Chinese that you would never come to know if you just studied textbook Chinese (even in China, where foreign students are all to often isolated from the rougher edges of the Chinese population). Even if you aren't interested in Chinese literature, this book has a lot of Chinese slang and all in the appropriate context of it's use, so even if you just want to talk rough & dirty these authors are worth a look (especialy Mian Mian... I still don't understand why that girl isn't banned by the government!)
4. This book represents mainland authors. Most of the time, when Chinese literature is addressed in a class, there are three main areas of focus: Classics & Classical Poetry, the Civil-War/Republic era "Grandfathers," and modern Expatriates. The popular contemporary Authors of both the Mainland and Taiwan are generaly overlooked. For Taiwanese authors, their work is readily available in most Chinatowns, but Mainland Literary authors are harder to find. This book will set you on the right track. Literature in both Taiwan and the Mainland is worth looking at, but they are two highly distinct voices, one cannot substitute for the other.
If these are problems that you were encountering as an advanced student of modern Chinese, then this book should definately be on your short list of materials to buy.

Customer Reviews:
Clever but Punctuated with Racial Stereotypes.......2007-08-28
I must come to the aid of poor Sheila who has been unfairly attacked for having an unpopular opinion (and for her spelling--now, that's just rude!).
I bought this book based on the many positive reviews and actually assumed that the perceived racism was probably blown out of proportion. But, as a middle school teacher, when I got to the page where Mr. Rongo appeared, I was a bit taken aback. Yes, Mr. Rongo is African-American while Mr. Wright is Caucasion, and yes he is called Mr. RONGo. That is probably bad enough, but his outfit is also somewhat clownish, and the poor guy really seems to have no control over his class (or at least over his punctuation). I'm white, and it bothered me. I actually checked the copyright date and thought there was some mistake!
No, the color of the two teachers' skin is not the focus of this book. But, if I read it to my sixth-graders, I would feel compelled to discuss this issue with them. I certainly don't want to propagate a stereotype, especially in a school system that is already quite "diversity challenged."
That said, I enjoyed the book, especially the postcards from the punctuation marks. It could be fun to have the kids figure out which ones sent which postcards. Of course, we would have to take time out to give colons some respect. Timekeepers? Honestly! If I were a colon, I'd be insulted.
cute.......2007-07-26
Good book to emphasize that punctuation is important. It didn't easily lend itself to punctuation activities for the classroom, which is what I was hoping for...
Fun grammar lesson!.......2007-06-12
I like to use literature whenever I can to teach lessons. This book is a fun way to show the importance of punctuation. It is a cute book but not exactly what I expected. I thought the main focus would be what would happen if punctuation took a vacation and have more examples of what confusion it could start. Instead it was based on a class borrowing the punctuation from the class next door...
Pictures great! Fun idea.
Punctuation Takes a Vacation.......2007-05-15
I loved this book and am going to use it to teach punctuation. This is a great story that allows student to examine different postcards and figure out which punctuation mark wrote it. Lastly, I like the punctuation rules at the end of the book!
Punctuation Takes A Vacation By: Robin Pulver.......2006-09-16
One hot day Mr. Wright told the punctuation to take a vacation. The punctuation said, " Is this the thanks we get for all we have done?" Then the punctuation took a vacation to Take-A-Break Lake. The students wrote a letter to the punctuation using Mr. Rongo's punctuation.
We like the pages that show no punctuation or wrong punctuation. The pictures are very, VERY colorful. Each time the punctuation talk, they use themselves.
Little children in the first through third grade would love this book. Teachers and daycare workers would also admire this book. Buy it before it's too late! Quick!!!!!
